This paper shows the results of the archeometallurgical study of 31 iron pieces, 23 bronze pieces, 1 silver, and 1 gold piece found in the archeological site of La Ulaña, which is located in the north of Spain in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, and that lived its period of greatest splendor coinciding with the Second Iron Age. The basic chemical and microstructural analyses of the iron- and copper-based objects provide an overview of the use of these metals in the site. The results obtained are compared with those published from other archeological sites nearby. In addition, the most unique pieces are set in their archeological context to facilitate the understanding of their chronological ascription. Through a systematic review and a series of meta-analyses, we evaluated the general responsiveness of putative transcriptional biomarkers of general toxicity and chemical stress. We targeted metal exposures performed on bivalves under controlled laboratory conditions, and selected six transcripts associated with general toxicity for evaluation: catalase (cat), glutathione-S-transferase (gst), heat shock proteins 70 and 90 (hsp70, hsp90), metallothionein (mt) and superoxide dismutase (sod). Transcriptional responses (n = 396) were extracted from published scientific articles (k = 22) and converted to log response ratios (lnRRs). By estimating toxic units (TUs), we normalized different metal exposures to a common scale, as a proxy of concentration. Using Bayesian hierarchical random effect models, we then tested the effects of metal exposure on lnRR, both for metal exposure in general and in meta-regressions using TU and exposure time as independent variables. Corresponding analyses were also repeated with transcript and tissue as additional moderators. Observed patterns were similar for general as for transcript- and tissue-specific responses. The expected overall response to arbitrary metal exposure was a lnRR of 0.50, corresponding to a 65 % increase relative a non-exposed control. However, when accounting for publication bias, the estimated ‘true’ response showed no such effect. Furthermore, expected response magnitude increased slightly with exposure time, but there was little support for general monotonic concentration-dependence with regards to TU. Altogether, this work reveals potential limitations that need consideration prior to applying the selected transcripts as biomarkers in environmental risk assessment. Electrodeposition from an environmentally friendly iron sulfate electrolyte with citric acid as carbon source has gained attention recently, because of excellent mechanical properties of the resulting Fe–C coatings with intentionally codeposited high-carbon concentrations. While being very attractive as protective coatings and sustainable alternatives for hard chrome coatings, comprehensive understanding of the coatings' chemical constitution including the type and location of carbon-containing phases is still lacking. The amount of codeposited carbon of up to about 0.8 wt.% significantly exceeds the solubility of carbon in ferrite, although carbon-free ferrite is the only unambiguously reported phase in as-deposited Fe–C coatings so far. In the present work, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and soft X-ray emission spectroscopy have been applied to identify the carbon-containing phases, which are present as minor secondary phases in the coatings but are known to have an important influence on the coatings' properties. Three carbon-containing phases could be distinguished, homogeneously distributed in the nanocrystalline ferrite base material. Iron acetates, amorphous carbon, and carbides were found in both as-deposited and annealed Fe–C coatings up to 300°C, but their fraction changes during postdeposition annealing.

Multiphase boride layers consisting of (CoFe)2B, (Fe0.4Mn0.6)B, Cr2Ni3B6 and (Cr0.4Mn0.6)B were formed on the surface of Co1.21Cr1.82Fe1.44Mn1.32Ni1.12Al0.08B0.01 high entropy alloy by powder-pack boronizing at 900 °C, 950 °C and 1000 °C for 4 h. The nanohardness (H), modulus of elasticity (E) and fracture toughness (KC) of the multiphase boride layers were determined based on the load–displacement (P-h) curves obtained in the nanoindentation tests. Three distinct regions were identified on the cross-sections of the produced layers: an outer layer consisting of MeB-type borides, an inner layer consisting of Me2B-type borides and the transition zone. The microstructural aspects of the layers were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Detailed analysis of the influence of the chemical composition on hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness in the three regions indicated that the most critical factor influencing the mechanical properties was the presence of chromium, iron and cobalt borides in the microstructure. Especially the formation of chromium borides reduced the fracture toughness of the transition zone.

Conservation and restoration of heat-damaged papers are particularly challenging due to the complexity and severity of the damage. Since valuable originals obviously cannot be used for the development of treatment methods and only to a limited extent for the analysis of the damage, it is necessary to produce model paper materials that have a high degree of similarity to fire-damaged papers, which was addressed in the present study. Three different heating methods were tested to produce model papers of different heating levels. Their altered optical, structural, and chemical properties were analyzed and compared with the results of original fire-damaged samples. The study points out pathways to enable the production of comparable sample materials. Heating between hot plates or in an oven produces papers that have properties quite similar to the originals in terms of surface area, paper structure, cellulose integrity, and interactions with water. Stack heating in the oven has proven to be a particularly effective manufacturing method for larger quantities of model papers.

The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of eight Palestinian indigenous plant essential oils (EOs) under in vitro and in vivo conditions against Botrytis cinerea Pers.: Fr., Penicillium italicum Wehmer, and Penicillium digitatum (Pers.) Sacc., three common post- harvest pathogens of tomato and strawberry fruits. In vivo tests showed that thyme, sesame and sage EOs exhibited high antifungal activity against B. cinerea on strawberry and toma- to fruits, compared with rosemary, mint and eucalyptus. In vitro agar, disk-diffusion tests showed that B. cinerea, P. digitatum and P. italicum mycelium growth was completely inhi- bited when treated with clove and sage EOs caused 50% inhibition of B. cinerea and P. itali- cum mycelium growth. Fruit decay and fruit quality index values measured in total soluble solids and fruit flesh firmness showed that EO coated strawberries had significantly less fruit decaying and ripping compared to control, while EO coated tomatoes showed no sig- nificant difference compared to control. EO constituents fall into different chemical classes, including sterols, caffeoylquinic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, coumarins, and acetylenes. Chemical analysis of the EO preparations using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determined that the main components in sesame oil were octadecenoic acid-(56%) and hexadecanoic acid (26%), while clove oil consisted of eugenol (53%). In the other EOs, the principal compounds were: menthol (44% in mint oil), eucalyptol (37% in sage oil), while bornanone (18% in rosemary oil) and γ-terpinene (21% in thyme oil) were present at lower concentrations. The EO of sage plants could potentially be a useful alternative to synthetic pesticides to control post-harvest diseases and prolong the shelf life of fruit products.

This study was initiated and conducted by several laboratories, 3 of the main cosmetic ingredient suppliers and 4 brands of cosmetics in France. Its objective is to show the interest and robustness of coupling chemical and genetic analyses in the identification of plant species. In this study, the Lavandula genus was used.In this study, we used two analytical methods. Chemical analysis from UHPLC (ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography) and genetic analysis from barcoding with genetic markers.Eleven lavender species were selected (botanically authenticated) and analysed. The results show that three chemical compounds (coumaric acid hexoside, ferulic acid hexoside and rosmarinic acid) and three genetic markers (RbcL, trnH-psbA and ITS) are of interest for the differentiation of species of the genus lavandula.The results show that the combination of complementary analytical methods is a relevant system to prove the botanical identification of lavender species. This first study, carried out on a plant of interest for cosmetics, demonstrates the need for authentication using a tool combining genetic and chemical analysis as an advance over traditional investigation methods used alone, in terms of identification and authentication reliability.Cette étude a été lancée et menée par plusieurs laboratoires, trois des principaux fournisseurs d’ingrédients cosmétiques et quatre marques de cosmétiques en France. Dans cette étude, c’est le genre Lavandula qui a été utilisé. MÉTHODES: Dans cette étude, nous avons fait appel à deux méthodes analytiques. L’analyse chimique, à partir de la chromatographie en phase liquide à haute performance (ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, UHPLC), et l’analyse génétique en procédant à un codage à barres avec des marqueurs génétiques. RÉSULTATS: Onze espèces de lavande ont été sélectionnées (authentifiées du point de vue botanique) et analysées. Les résultats montrent que trois composés chimiques (acide coumarique hexoside, acide ferulique hexoside et acide rosmarinique) et trois marqueurs génétiques (RbcL, trnH-psbA et ITS) présentent un intérêt pour la différenciation des espèces du genre lavandula.Les résultats montrent que la combinaison de méthodes analytiques complémentaires est un système pertinent pour prouver l’identification végétale des espèces de lavande. Cette première étude, réalisée sur une plante qui offre un intérêt pour les cosmétiques, démontre la nécessité de procéder à une authentification à l’aide d’un outil qui conjugue analyse génétique et chimique ; elle représente une avancée par rapport aux méthodes d’investigation traditionnelles utilisées seules, en termes d’identification et de fiabilité de l’authentification.

High quality of purchased resources plays a critical role under the conditions of severe international competition. Raw materials, materials and components are purchase for product production and their quality is an essential part in the production of steel at OJSC “BSW – Management Company of the Holding “BMC” holding». The problem of excessively high level of dynamic loads is especially acute for roughing stands. The main reasons for dynamic overloads are intense transient processes occurring in the rolling cycle, the presence of elastic constraints and gaps in the system, imperfection of electric drive system and errors made during development. Therefore, there is a need for selection of material and manufacturing technology for mill rolls capable to withstand such loads for a sufficiently long period. Investigations of destruction causes of experimental mill roll of stand roughing group of mill 150 of section rolling shop at OJSC “BSW – Management Company of the Holding “BMC” holding were carried out. Main classification features are established based on the analysis of the fracture. The results of metallographic studies of microstructure and chemical composition of central and subsurface zone roll fragments are presented. The reason of destruction of experimental mill roll was discovered – nonconformance of roll material grade with the requirements of technological instructions and normative documentation for rough group of stands No. 1–3

Abstract Solid solution $${\text{G}}{{{\text{d}}}_{{2 - x}}}{\text{L}}{{{\text{i}}}_{x}}{\text{Z}}{{{\text{r}}}_{2}}{{{\text{O}}}_{{7 - x}}}$$ with a pyrochlore structure is synthesized for the first time. The cationic composition is confirmed via chemical analysis and nuclear reactions. It is found that the stoichiometry with respect to lithium is retained up to 1100°C. The lattice parameter diminishes in the homogeneity range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.30, while the free volume of migration grows. Introducing lithium into the Gd sublattice raises oxygen–ion conductivity, due to the emergence of oxygen vacancies and enhancement of their mobility. Maximum conductivity is reached for composition with х = 0.10 (~1 × 10−3 Ω−1 cm−1, 650°C). An assumption is made about the formation of associates of the type $${{\{ {\text{Li}}_{{{\text{Gd}}}}^{{''}} \cdot {\text{V}}_{{\text{o}}}^{{ \bullet \bullet }}\} }^{ \times }}$$ at high contents of the dopant (x = 0.30), accompanied by an increase in the activation energy of conductivity.

Santa Maria in Vado is a monument in the rich artistic heritage of the city of Ferrara (north of Italy). In this paper we want to investigate the state of conservation of tombstones, cloister and the entrance to the basilica, in order to keep them in the best possible state for the future generations. From the chemical characterization, the state of conservation was determined focusing on the biodeteriogenic and non-biodeteriogenic factors, which determine a series of unwanted changes in the physical, mechanical and above all aesthetic properties of the material, often closely connected with the environment and conservation conditions. On the macroscopic observation, the state of conservation of the tombstones appeared to be very deteriorated through aesthetic and structural damage. In detail, the stereo microscope observation of samples collected from the tombstones show the presence of efflorescence probably caused by the abundant of water that bring the salts present inside the rock into solution. Relating the columns, μ-XRF analysis confirm the carbonate composition of samples and presence of iron and sulfur. Finally, SEM observation highlighted the presence of black crust on arch samples and the presence of pollen on the black crust and spheroidal particles probably related to atmospheric pollution.

This study revealed that the synthesis of effective flow modifiers using diamine monomers and fatty acid reduces the melt viscosity of polyamide 66 (PA66) composites. Moreover, the study provided insights into the rheological and mechanical properties of these reinforced polymers. In particular, the oligomers hexamethylenediamide, dodecamethylene diamide, 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexylamide) (i.e., HMDA, DMDA, MCHA) to modify the PA66 were prepared from hexamethylenediamine, dodecamethylene diamine, 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexylamine). The synthesized modifiers showed thermal stability in the PA66 processing temperature. Further, the chemical similarity increased due to amide bonds in the backbone of the flow modifiers, showing good compatibility with PA66. Additionally, PA66/glass fiber (GF) composites containing the flow modifier showed enhanced rheological and mechanical properties. The flow modifiers significantly improved the tensile strength and flexural modulus of the PA66/GF composites. The proposed synthetic method is straightforward, opening up a new strategy for reducing the melt viscosity of PA66 without degradation of the mechanical properties. The method improves the compatibility of the PA66/GF composites even in high amounts of GF, achieving effective polymer processing for practical applications.

The seafloor is the major sink for microplastic (MP) pollutants. However, there is a lack of robust data on the historical evolution of MP pollution in the sediment compartment, particularly the sequestration and burial rate of small MPs. By combining a palaeoceanographic approach and state-of-the-art analytical methods for MP identification down to 11 μm in size, we present the first high-resolution reconstruction of MP pollution from an undisturbed sediment core collected in the NW Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, we investigate the fate of MPs once buried in the sediments by evaluating the changes in the size distribution of the MPs and the weathering status of the polyolefins, polyethylene, and polypropylene. Our results indicate that the MP mass sequestered in the sediment compartment mimics the global plastic production from 1965 to 2016. We observed an increase in the weathering status of the polyolefins as the size decreased. However, the variability in the size and weathering status of the MPs throughout the sedimentary record indicated that these pollutants, once incorporated into sediments, remain preserved with no further degradation under conditions lacking remobilization.

Este trabajo compara dos libros publicados por estudiantes de Química con el tratado publicado por el profesor de la asignatura. Las tres obras trataban sobre las lecciones impartidas en el aula y se dirigían a los estudiantes de análisis químico que cursaban el doctorado en Medicina en la Universidad de Madrid a mediados de la década de 1920. Sus autores se esforzaron por cautivar a un público con intereses diversos, con la colaboración de editores y libreros. Los apuntes y explicaciones estudiados muestran el activo y creativo trabajo de creación científica de los dos estudiantes que los publicaron y ofrecen interesantes detalles sobre la construcción del conocimiento en el ámbito académico. This work compares two books published by chemistry students with the treatise published by the professor of the subject. All three works were based on the lessons taught in the classroom and were aimed at students of chemical analysis taking the doctoral program in medicine at the University of Madrid in the 1920s. Their authors tried to captivate an audience with diverse interests, in collaboration with publishers and booksellers. Thus, the notebooks and explanations studied in this paper show how both students developed an active and creative scientific work and provide relevant details on the construction of knowledge in the academic sphere.

Studies have been carried out on bovine bone due to its abundance and large quantity of hydroxyapatite (HAP) in it while caprine bone has been understudied. In this study, locally sourced bovine and caprine bones were washed in distilled water, defatted at 120°C for 1.5 hr in a pressure pot, ball-milled, sieved to 150 µm particle size and characterised. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Energy dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis revealed calcium, phosphorus and carbon as the main components. Both bones contained carbon and oxygen due to the presence of organic collagen but the quantity in caprine bone was a bit higher as revealed by the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and EDS spectra. A slight difference in thermal decomposition patterns was recorded while X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD) revealed the presence of identical functional phases. The microstructures showed needle-like and pebble-like shapes for bovine and caprine respectively, also on visual examination of the Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM), the bovine samples tended to have particle surface roughness more than caprine. Consequently, the chemical properties of both bone raw samples were insignificantly different from each other except for collagen composition and morphology.

La determinación segura de la presencia de serpentinitas en los cortes estratigráficos de los pozos de petróleo del yacimiento CANTEL es muy importante por ser las serpentinitas las principales colectoras de petróleo en esa zona en Cárdenas, Matanzas, Cuba.Para identificarlos, el geólogo cuenta como principal y casi única ayuda las muestras de canal, las cuales no son siempre fáciles de identificar visualmente.En el presente trabajo se ofrece una secuencia de análisis químicos que permiten la identificación de los tres componentes primarios de las serpentinitas (sílice, magnesio e hidroxilo), así como de los principales elementos acompañantes de la misma (níquel, cromo, aluminio, y hierro).Tanto la marcha analítica como los equipos y reactivos necesarios son suficientemente sencillos para que la misma pueda hacerse directamente en el pozo por los geólogos que atienden el mismo, permitiendo de esta forma la identificación inmediata de la presencia de serpentinitas con mayor seguridad.

Burrata is a fresh pasta filata cheese manufactured in Italy. Its demand on the worldwide market is constantly growing, and prolonging its shelf-life is an important challenge for the Italian dairy industry. In the present study, combining a commercial bio-protective starter and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was evaluated as a strategy to delay the spoilage of product quality. Three experimental samples of burrata were produced by experimental trials at the industrial level and stored for 28 days under refrigerated conditions. Two samples contained the protective starter but were packaged differently (under MAP and immersed in water), and one did not contain the starter and was packaged under MAP. A sample of burrata without a starter and immersed in water was also prepared and used as a control. The combination of MAP and bio-protective starter delayed the degradation of lactose and citric acid, used as indices of microbial activity. In fact, lower counts of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas were observed in this sample. In contrast, control burrata had the highest level of total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) at the end of the storage period, because of higher microbial activity. Even though all samples were judged to be unacceptable after 28 days from the sensory point of view, the sample with bio-protective starter under MAP had the best score after 21 days, obtaining a shelf-life extension of about 7 days with respect to control. In conclusion, the combination of MAP and protective starter culture could be an easy way to extend the shelf-life of burrata stored under correct refrigerated conditions.

The combination of multiple quantum dots (QDs) in a multi-emitter nanoprobe can be envisaged as a promising sensing scheme, as it enables obtaining a collective response of individual emitters towards a given analyte and allows for achieving specific analyte-response profiles. The processing of these profiles using adequate chemometric methods empowers a more sensitive, reliable and selective determination of the target analyte. In this work, we developed a kinetic fluorometric method consisting of a dual CdTe/AgInS2 quantum dots photoluminescence probe for the determination of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The fluorometric response was acquired as second-order time-based excitation/emission matrices that were subsequently processed using chemometric methods seeking to assure the second-order advantage. The data obtained in this work are considered second-order data as they have a three-dimensional size, I × J × K (where I represents the samples’ number, J the fluorescence emission wavelength while K represents the time). In order to select the most adequate chemometric method regarding the obtained data structure, different chemometric models were tested, namely unfolded partial least squares (U-PLS), N-way partial least squares (N-PLS), multilayer feed-forward neural networks (MLF-NNs) and radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NNs).

The main purpose of this research was to determine the chemical composition of deposits in gas engines fuelled by coal mine methane (CMM), as well as its dependence on the place of collection. This composition was compared with that for deposits formed in biogas-powered engines. It was also found that the chemical composition of deposits varies depending on the place of their formation in the engine and on the gaseous fuel used. The dominant mineral deposits found in gas engines fuelled by CMM contained Ca, Zn, P, and S, which originate from oil additives. The Al, Cr, Cu, Ti, and Fe elements present in the tested samples are related to the wear of the engine under normal operation. The remaining trace elements can originate as impurities from the air.

The unique properties of microwaves make them useful in many diverse applications across a wide range of fields, spanning much of engineering and science. In the chemical sciences, microwaves provide a toolkit of electric and magnetic effects with which, at high power, unconventional heating modes can be used to produce new materials not obtainable by conventional heating. At low power, unique microwave properties can be used to make revealing spectroscopic measurements. In this review, we consider the current outlook for microwaves in chemistry beginning with the theoretical framework for our understanding of microwaves interactions and the causes of results observed. We then survey major application areas including in synthesis and emerging areas in catalysis, energy, and environmental applications. Finally, we review new concepts in dielectric and magnetic spectroscopy at microwave frequencies with a focus upon dielectric property measurement and electron paramagnetic resonance. This nonexhaustive review seeks to highlight important and emerging areas in the chemical sciences and put into context recent developments and advances in our understanding of microwave applications in this diverse area of science and engineering.

Skin lipids are essential in every compartment of the skin where they play a key role in various biological functions. Interestingly, their role is central in the maintenance of hydration which is related to skin barrier function and in the skin structure through adipose tissue. It is well described today that skin lipids are affected by ageing giving skin sagging, wrinkles and dryness. Thereby, developing cosmetic actives able to reactivate skin lipids would be an efficient ant-ageing strategy. Due to the strong commitment of our scientists to innovate responsibly and create value, they designed a high value active ingredient named here as Vetiver extract, using a ground-breaking upcycling approach. We evidenced that this unique extract was able to reactivate globally the skin lipids production, bringing skin hydration and plumping effect for mature skin.In order to demonstrate the global renewal of lipids, we evaluated the lipids synthesis on cutaneous cells that produce lipids such as keratinocytes, sebocytes and adipocytes then on Reconstructed Human Epidermis and skin explants. We evaluated the expression of proteins involved in ceramides transport and barrier cornification. We then evaluated hydration and sebaceous parameters on a panel of mature volunteers.We firstly demonstrated that Vetiver extract induced sebum production from human sebocytes cells lines but also improved its quality as observed by the production of specific antimicrobial lipids. Secondly, we demonstrated that Vetiver extract was able to restore skin barrier with the increase of skin lipids neosynthesis on Reconstructed Human Epidermis and skin explants. We also evidenced that Vetiver extract stimulated the lipids transport and epidermal cornification. Finally, Vetiver extract showed a significant effect on adipogenesis and maturation of adipocytes at in vitro and ex vivo models. We confirmed all these activities by showing that Vetiver extract improved sebum production and brought hydration through an increase of lipids content and their conformation. Vetiver extract induced an improvement of skin fatigue and a plumping effect by acting deeply on adipose tissue.In conclusion, we developed an active ingredient able to bring anti-ageing effect for mature skin by a global increase of skin lipids.Les lipides de la peau sont essentiels dans chaque compartiment de la peau où ils jouent un rôle clé dans diverses fonctions biologiques. Il est intéressant de noter que leur rôle est central dans le maintien de l'hydratation, liée à la fonction de barrière cutanée, mais aussi dans la structure même de la peau, par le biais du tissu adipeux. Il est bien décrit aujourd'hui que les lipides de la peau sont affectés par le vieillissement, ce qui entraîne un relâchement de la peau, des rides et une sécheresse. Ainsi, le développement d'actifs cosmétiques capables de réactiver les lipides de la peau serait une stratégie efficace de lutte contre le vieillissement. En raison de l'engagement fort de nos scientifiques à innover de manière responsable et à créer de la valeur, ils ont conçus un ingrédient actif à forte valeur ajoutée, appelé ici extrait de Vétiver, en utilisant une approche révolutionnaire de « up-cycling ». Nous avons démontré que cet extrait unique était capable de réactiver globalement la production de lipides de la peau, apportant une hydratation de la peau et un effet repulpant pour les peaux matures. MÉTHODES: Afin de démontrer le renouvellement global des lipides, nous avons évalué la synthèse des lipides sur les cellules cutanées qui produisent des lipides tels que les kératinocytes, les sébocytes et les adipocytes, puis sur un modèle d’Epiderme Humain Reconstruit et les explants de peau. Nous avons évalué l'expression des protéines impliquées dans le transport des céramides et la kératinisation de la barrière cutanée. Nous avons ensuite évalué l'hydratation et les paramètres sébacés sur un panel de volontaires matures. RÉSULTATS: Nous avons tout d'abord démontré que l'extrait de Vétiver induit la production de sébum à partir de lignées cellulaires de sébocytes humains mais améliore également sa qualité comme l'indique la production de lipides antimicrobiens spécifiques. Ensuite, nous avons démontré que l'extrait de Vétiver était capable de restaurer la barrière cutanée grâce à l'augmentation de la néosynthèse lipidique sur un modèle d’Epiderme Humain Reconstruit et sur des explants de peau. Nous avons également démontré que l'extrait de Vétiver stimulait le transport des lipides et la kératinisation de l'épiderme. Enfin, l'extrait de Vétiver a montré un effet significatif sur l'adipogenèse et la maturation des adipocytes dans des modèles in vitro et ex vivo. Nous avons confirmé à l’échelle clinique toutes ces activités en montrant que l'extrait de Vétiver améliorait la production de sébum et apportait une hydratation grâce à une augmentation de la teneur en lipides ainsi qu’une modification de leur conformation. L'extrait de Vétiver a induit une amélioration de la fatigue cutanée et un effet repulpant en agissant en profondeur sur le tissu adipeux.En conclusion, nous avons développé un ingrédient actif capable d'apporter un effet anti-âge aux peaux matures par une augmentation globale des lipides de la peau.

Besides, an extraction method of caffeine from coffee oil and from creams, which contains both lipophilic and hydrophilic components, has been developed. The method to analyze caffeine was developed using an isocratic pump, Waters 1515 and an automatic injector Perkin-Elmer Series 200 and an UV detector Perkin-Elmer. As stationary phase, Kromasil C-18 (150 × 4.6 mm ID with particle size of 5 µm) column was used and a mixture of water (pH 4.00)/acetonitrile (80:20, V/V) with a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min as a mobile phase. To extract the caffeine from the formulations and coffee oil, different agitation methods, solvents, and number of treatments were evaluated. The relationship between chromatographic areas and concentration of caffeine presents a linear correlation within the range 0.05–5.00 µg/mL. The precision of this method was very high, as the coefficients of variation were always lower than 6%. The DL of this technique was 3.71 ηg/mL and the QL was 11.23 ηg/mL. Three replicates of the samples obtained by the extraction method were processed obtaining a concentration of caffeine in creams between the experimental and theoretical average value of 7.48%. The literature report methodologies only in aqueous medium, different from this methodology that is fast, economical and can be used in Quality Control in the cosmetic industry. The extraction method of caffeine from matrices has also been successfully developed with absence of interferences. In this study, it was aimed to provide multifunctional performance characteristics like ultraviolet protection, antibacterial activity and antiwrinkle effect on linen fabrics in one process by sol–gel coatings doped with different zinc chemicals.In addition, the effects of nano-sized zinc oxide nanopowders and micro-sized zinc salts were also discussed and compared. As control samples, both unfinished and pure silica coated (undoped) linen samples were used and as sol–gel coatings, ten sol–gel coatings were prepared with zinc salts (zinc acetate, zinc nitrate and zinc sulphate) and zinc oxide nanopowders. The coatings were applied to linen fabrics by pad-dry-cure method. Then, add on % values, ultraviolet protection factors, antibacterial properties, wrinkle recovery angles, tensile strength and elongation at break values, bending length and bending rigidity values and whiteness–yellowness values were determined according to the standard test methods. The coating film layer on the fiber surfaces and elemental content of the coatings were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) analysis was used to determine the changes in chemical structures of the linen fabric samples after finishing processes and X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to characterize the zinc oxide nanopowders. As a result of the study, antiwrinkle effect, antibacterial activity and ultraviolet protection effect could be improved in one process and in terms of physical properties no considerable changes were observed. From the point of functional efficiency, nano-sized zinc oxide nanopowders were more favorable than micro-sized zinc salts. Objectives The most pronounced occupational exposure routes for lead (Pb) are inhalation and gastrointestinal uptake mainly through hand-to-mouth behaviour. Skin absorption has been demonstrated for organic Pb compounds, but less is known about inorganic Pb species. Several legislative bodies in Europe are currently proposing lowering biological exposure limit values and air exposure limits due to new evidence on cardiovascular effects at very low blood Pb levels. In light of this, all exposure routes in occupational settings should be revisited to evaluate how to lower the overall exposure to Pb. Methods The aim of the study was to investigate the possible exposure routes in workers operating computer numerical control-machines in a brass foundry and specifically to understand if metal cutting fluids (MCFs) used by the workers could lead to skin absorption of Pb. The different bronze alloys at the facility may contain up to 20% Pb. After obtaining written informed consent from the workers (n = 7), blood, skin wipes, and personal air samples were collected. In addition, MCFs used on the day of exposure measurements were collected for in vitro skin absorption studies using stillborn piglet skin mounted in static Franz diffusion cells (n = 48). All samples were analysed for Pb content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results Pb air concentration ( Conclusions This case study shows that MCF may lead to skin absorption of inorganic Pb and contribute to a systemic dose (quasi-steady state). Furthermore, even though good hand hygienic measures were in place, the workers’ skin exposure to Pb is in all likelihood an important contributor in elevating blood Pb levels. Skin exposure should thus be monitored routinely in workers at facilities handling Pb, to help reducing unnecessary occupational exposure.

El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar los metabolitos emeticos en diferentes partes de P. ipecacuanha , una planta con propiedades emeticas. Se realizo un analisis fitoquimico parcial, donde se determino la presencia de emetina y cefalina en hojas, tallos y raices. Ambos alcaloides se detectaron en las tres partes de la planta analizadas. El mayor contenido de alcaloides se encontro en las raices (8.55 mg/g), seguido de los tallos (4.05 mg /g), y el mas bajo se encontro en las hojas (2.4 mg/g). El contenido de cefalina (8,35 mg/g) fue mayor que el de emetina (6,65 mg/g) en los tres organos analizados. El analisis de toxicidad del extracto crudo mostro una DL 50 de 500 mg/kg.

WOS:000540457600158 The aim of this study was to investigate degraded birch trees (Betula pendula Roth) that suffered from a harmful fungus called Piptoporus betulinus. The main chemical analysis of B. pendula degraded by the fungus, included the holocellulose, alpha-cellulose, and lignin contents and was determined in cold and hot water and alcohol-benzene solubility in 1% NaOH mixtures. This fungus caused B. pendula to lose mass and chemical properties. The declining amount of holocellulose mass loss was 6.7% according to the holocellulose test. This decrement caused the quality of the birch holocellulose to decline. The total loss difference was 9.8% according to the alkaline solubility analysis of the 1% NaOH test and 14.3% according to the density analysis of the test. The loss difference was 4.2% according to the alcohol-benzene analysis of the test. The article presents the experience of development and application of enterprise standard samples (ESS) of monolithic and dispersed materials for spectral and chemical methods of steel analysis. The procedure for the development of ESS is described in detail: development of technical specifications for ESS in accordance with the requirements of GOST 8.315, preparation of ESS material, study of the uniformity of ESS material, establishment of metrological characteristics of ESS, preparation of a report on the development of ESS, verification of technical documentation for ESS and metrological examination of documentation, approval of ESS and its registration.

In this study, hazelnut, pistachio, and apricot kernel shells were ground size of 0–300 µm, 300–600 µm, and 600–850 µm. The cellulose, ash, humidity, and metal contents of these powder particles were chemically analyzed and structural properties were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR) analysis. Their composites were fabricated by adding 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of these powder particles to the polyester matrix material. The effect of chemical and structural properties of the powder particles on the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites was analyzed. The XRD analysis revealed that cellulose structure observed in powder particles. The peaks observed in their surface functional structures with FT-IR were mainly caused by cellulose and hemicellulose structures. These structures effected humidity and ash ratios. Nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen elements were seen in the structure. In addition, heavy metals such as Sn, Ca, K, Na, Mg, Fe, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Si were found. Powder particles added to the polyester material adversely affected the tensile strength of the matrix material. However, powder particles added to the matrix material at low rates had a positive effect on bending and compressive strength.

Background The aim of this study is to characterize and detect the possible differences among the hair of three different ethnicities: African, Asiatic and Caucasian. Materials and Methods The differences in water adsorption/desorption behaviour of hairs were studied using a thermogravimetric balance and compared with the analysis of the lipid distribution and order using synchrotron‐based Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy. Besides, the thermal thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses on human hair were executed. Results Differences in the diffusion coefficients were evidenced. African hair exhibited increased permeability. Caucasian hair displayed a higher water absorption capability with increasing humidity but with a slow diffusion rate. The Asian fibre appeared to be more resistant to hydration changes. The spectroscopic analysis showed notable differences in the cuticle lipids. The African cuticle exhibited more lipids with a lower order bilayer. The outmost layer of Caucasian fibres contained more ordered lipids, and the Asian fibres show a very low level of lipids on the cuticle region. The DSC results indicate no difference in the thermal stability and TG showed higher water content in the Caucasian fibre and a possible lower cysteine disulphide bond content in the African hair matrix. Conclusion The triple approach demonstrated the permeability differences among the ethnic fibres and their correlation with the properties of their cuticle lipids. Spices and aromatic herbs have always had great historical importance in human nutrition. Their use has been documented for centuries as a rich source of bioactive compounds; they have been used for their health benefits and also for flavoring or coloring food. However, despite the many health properties linked to the use of spices and aromatic herbs, these can represent biological hazards and can contain chemical substances of concern. Certainly, monitoring potential health hazards in spices and aromatic herbs includes microbiological safety and also the content of inorganic substances: both represent a key step. This research aims at monitoring the compliance of various spices and aromatic herbs from a non-European country market (namely: black cumin seeds, Iranian Tokhme Sharbati, clove buds, Shahjeera, Abbaszadeh saffron, organic fenugreek, whole black pepper, cinnamon, Abthul Ahmar (Asario), Ajwan seeds, whole coriander seeds, black sesame seeds, Sabja seeds) with the current European Union (EU) and WHO regulations, when available, regarding mineral and microbiological parameters. In particular, microbiological assays using rapid and conventional methods, and trace mineral determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were performed. Results show the safety of the tested spices, given that the microbiological parameters were within the legal microbiological criteria set by the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2073/2005 and its amendment Regulation (EC) No. 1441/2007. With reference to potentially toxic Cd, Pb, As, Hg, these were within the limits set by the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 and its amendments, Regulation (EU) No. 1317/2021 and Regulation (EU) No. 1323/2021, and WHO. According to EU regulations, for Pb content, 2 samples out of 16 showed values different from the set limits.

В настоящей статье приведены результаты исследования аналитических показателей проб почв с территорий штанговых скважинных насосных установок Бирского района Республики Башкортостан. Эксперимент направлен на определение степени антропогенного воздействия на эксплуатируемые почвы. Для сравнения, были изучены пробы почвы прилежащих территорий, не подверженных данному воздействию. В работе приведены результаты сравнения показателей основных загрязнителей почв с их ПДК и ОДК с учетом фонового содержания, характерного для данной территории. Результаты исследований свидетельствуют, что все показатели находятся в пределах значений ПДК и ОДК, однако результаты проб с территорий штанговых скважинных насосных установок отличаются от фоновых показателей, что говорит об отрицательном воздействии станков-нефтекачалок на грунт. Полученные результаты могут быть использованы при прогнозировании ореолов рассеяния нефтяного загрязнения на участках добычи ископаемого., The article presents the results of the study of the analytical indicators of soil samples from the territories of sucker-rod pumping units in the Birsk District of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The study is aimed at determining the degree of anthropogenic impact on the exploited soils. For comparison, the soil samples were studied from adjacent territories which were not affected by it. The paper presents the results of comparison of indicators of the main soil pollutants with their maximum allowable concentration (MAC) and approximate allowable concentration (AAC), taking into account the background content which is characteristic of the given territory. The results of the research show that all the indicators are within the limits of MAC and AAC, however, the results of the samples from the territories of sucker-rod pumping units differ from the background indicators, which shows a negative impact of oil pumps on the soil. The obtained results can be used to predict the halo dispersion of oil pollution in mining sites.

В данной работе рассмотрены экологические проблемы глиноземного производства, обусловленные образованием большого количества пыли газоочистных установок. Исследован фазовый и химический состав и микроструктура пыли теплоэнергетических установок. Показано, что пыль электрофильтров печей каустификации АО «РУСАЛ Ачинск» содержит в своем составе большое количество известняковых компонентов: кальцита (34 %) и оксида кальция (31 %), а пыль электрофильтров котлов ТЭЦ в большей степени содержит оксид кремния (56 %). Предложено использовать кальцийсодержащие отходы газоочистных сооружений в качестве мелиорантов для нейтрализации кислых почв и повышения их плодородия., This paper considers the environmental problems of alumina production, caused by the formation of large amounts of dust from gas-cleaning plants. The phase and chemical composition and microstructure of dust from thermal power plants have been studied. It is shown that the dust of the electric precipitators of caustic furnaces of JSC “RUSAL Achinsk” contains a large amount of calcite (34 %) and calcium oxide (31 %), and the dust of electric precipitators of thermal power plants contains silicon oxide (56 %). It is proposed to use calcium-containing wastes of gas treatment facilities as ameliorants to neutralize acidic soils and increase their fertility.

In this study, the effects of stem canker disease caused by Chrysoporthe deuterocubensis on the chemical properties and durability of a Eucalyptus hybrid (E. urophylla x E. grandis) were investigated. Eleven-year-old healthy and infected trees were collected. The samples were grouped into four different classes based on the infection severity: healthy (class 1), moderately infected (class 2), severely infected (class 3), and very severely infected (class 4). The changes in chemical properties were evaluated via chemical analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. A resistance test against fungal decay (Pcynoporus sanguineus and Caniophora puteana) and termite (Coptotermes curvignathus) was also performed. The results showed that reductions in cellulose and hemicellulose content from 53.2% to 45.4% and 14.1% to 13.9%, respectively, were observed in the infected samples. Meanwhile, the percentages of lignin and extractives increased from 18.1% to 20.5% and 14.6% to 20.2%, respectively. The resistance against fungi and termites varied between severity classes. Generally, infected wood behaved better than healthy wood in terms of durability against fungi and termites. The durability classes for both tests were significantly improved, from resistant to highly resistant and poor to moderately resistant, respectively. These results suggest that E. urograndis that is infected by C. deuterocubensis might have a better potential use in lumber production with regard to its durability and processing cost compared to pulp and paper products.

“Pirot ‘ironed’ sausage“ (Pis) is a traditional, fermented sausage, made from different types of meat (beef and chevon), without additives or starter cultures. The physical–chemical properties (pH, water activity, fats, moisture, and protein contents) were examined in the initial meat batter stuffing and during ripening. Total bacterial diversity was examined at different time points using both culturable (traditional) and non-culturable (NGS sequencing) approaches. During the ripening, a decrease in pH value, aw, and moisture content was observed, as well as an increase in protein and fat content. At least a two-fold significant decrease was noted for colorimetric values during the ripening period. The dominance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes was observed in the non-culturable approach in all studied samples. During the ripening process, an increase in Firmicutes (from 33.5% to 63.5%) with a decrease in Proteobacteria (from 65.4% to 22.3%) was observed. The bacterial genera that were dominant throughout the ripening process were Lactobacillus, Photobacterium, Leuconostoc, Weissella, and Lactococcus, while Carnobacterium, Brochothrix, and Acinetobacter were found also, but in negligible abundance. Among the culturable bacteria, Latilactobacillus sakei (Lactobacillus sakei) and Leuconostoc mesenteoides were present in all stages of ripening. © 2023 by the authors.

It has been known for many years that dyes and pigments are subject to light-induced degradation, or photodegradation, when exposed to light. It is the very reason why some beverages or medicines are wrapped in light-tight packaging materials, and why museums cover their windows with UV-blocking filters. The exact chemistry of light-induced degradation can be quite complex. Why and how are these dyes and colorants affected by light? How fast do these processes occur? Are there ways to prevent this from happening in a straight-forward and durable way? These were and still are questions that are relevant to the many fields where colorants are applied. In order to support these questions, we have tried to provide a broad overview of the research that has already been conducted on photodegradation of dyes and pigments and the analysis of photodegradation products. In those papers, the most important parameters that were discussed are the influence of the irradiation source, intensity and time, the presence or absence of oxygen, temperature, the effects that catalysts have, as well as the dye or pigment concentration. Additionally, we have investigated the differences found for photodegradation in solution and on substrates and specific parameters that may affect the processes in these media.

Defining analytical chemistry as the measurement of isolated compositional features in a selected study object ignores the unique perspective that analytical chemists bring to twenty-first century science and society. In this feature article, we will discuss some of the existing preconceptions and misinterpretations of analytical chemistry that occur at present and will tackle them from the more up-to-date perspective of science in the Big Data Era. This will place their influence in context while simultaneously enlarging the scope of the discipline analytical chemistry to its well-deserved prevalent position in present-day science and technology.

Papers that have been severely damaged by fire, heat, and extinguishing water, are a particularly challenging case, because of the complexity and severity of damage patterns. In-depth analysis of fire-damaged papers, by means of examples from the catastrophic fire in a 17th-century German library, shows the changes, which proceeded from the margin to the center, to go beyond surface charring and formation of hydrophobic carbon-rich layers. The charred paper exhibits structural changes in the nano- and micro-range, with increased porosity and water sorption. In less charred areas, cellulose is affected by both chain cleavage and cross-linking. Based on these results and conclusions with regard to adhesion of auxiliaries, a stabilization method is developed, which coats the damaged paper with a thin layer of cellulose nanofibers. It enables the reliable preservation of the paper and—most importantly—retrieval ofthe contained historical information: the nanofibers form a flexible, transparent film on the surface and adhere strongly to the damaged matrix, greatly reducing its fragility, giving it stability, and enabling digitization and further handling.

The reserves of heavy oil are enormous. However, its high viscosity and other characteristics make heavy oil extraction and transportation extremely difficult. Power ultrasonic (US) reforming technology on heavy oil has the advantages of environmental protection and fast results, so it is important to understand the mechanism of ultrasonic reforming. We examine the influence law of the electric power input of the US transducer on the viscosity of heavy oil. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography (GC) are applied to explain the changes in different functional groups, heavy components, and carbon chains before and after US irradiation. The cavitation noise method is also used to study the influences of variance in the intensity of cavitation on the viscosity of heavy oil. The results indicate that the viscosity of heavy oil first decreases, and next increases with an increase in electric power. The functional groups and chromatographic distillation also change in different forms, and with an increase in electric power, the cavitation effect is gradually enhanced. These findings suggest that it is not that the stronger the cavitation, the greater the influence on the viscosity of heavy oil.

Convolvulus arvensis is a medicinal plant in the family Convolvulaceae, which is used in traditional phytotherapy. The objective of this work was conducted to valorize essential oils of Convolvulus arvensis (EOCA) in terms of chemical composition, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. To achieve this objective, the chemical composition was performed by the use of GC-SM. Antioxidant power was effectuated by the use of DPPH, FRAP, and TAC assays. Evaluation of the antimicrobial power was conducted against clinically important pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. pneumoniae, and S. aureus) and fungi (A. niger, C. albicans, and A. flavus) by the use of disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) assays. The results showed that the yield of recovered EOs from Convolvulus arvensis was 0.34% of the total mass of leaves and mainly was rich in cuprenne (34%), thymol (20%), himachalene (16%), and longifolene (10%). Notably, EOCA exhibited important antioxidant effects, wherein IC50 (DPPH) and EC50 (FRAP) were determined to be 30 µg/mL and 120 µg/mL, respectively, while the total antioxidant power was determined to be 508.0 ± 6.0 µg EAA/mg. An important antibacterial effect was noted for EOCA as an excellent inhibition zone was recorded against all bacterial strains, particularly K. pneumoniae and S. aureus with 14.27 ± 0.42 and 21.35 ± 0.76 mm, respectively. Similarly, MICs of K. pneumoniae and S. aureus were 21.35 ± 0.76 mm and 28.62 ± 1.65 µg/mL, respectively. Noticeably, important antifungal activity was shown by EOCA against all fungal strains wherein the inhibition zone diameters against all fungal species ranged from 19.44 ± 1.10 to 20.41 ± 1.81 mm. Notably, MICs of EOCA against F. oxysporum and C. albicans were 18.65 ± 0.94 and 19.38 ± 0.58 g/mL, respectively. The outcome of the present work showed that EOs from Convolvulus arvensis can be used to conceptualize drugs to manage diseases relative to free radicals and infections.

Meat production has a higher economic and ecological impact than other commodities. The reduction in meat loss and waste throughout the whole supply chain is a demanding challenge. In recent years, the interest in the food-grade polysaccharide chitosan (CH) and essential oils (EOs) employed as allies in meat protection has increased. In this work, we selected five EOs obtained from plants traditionally used as spices, and after their chemical characterisation, a trained panel of expert sensorial analysts determined that, among them, Laurus nobilis (Lauraceae) and Piper nigrum (Piperaceae) EOs were the most suitable to season meat. Therefore, the effect of CH, the L. nobilis and P. nigrum EOs, and EOs-enriched CH solutions on meat was tested to assess how they deter the oviposition behaviour of the blowfly Calliphora vomitoria (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and against water loss, lipid peroxidation, and colour changes. All the applied treatments, compared to the control, did not accelerate meat dehydration but increased colour lightness, an attractive feature for consumers, and discouraged the blowfly’s oviposition. In particular, the P. nigrum EO-enriched CH was the most active in repelling C. vomitoria without negatively affecting the organoleptic qualities and shelf-life of meat.

Currently, emphasis is placed on using environmentally friendly materials both from a structural point of view and the application of protective means. For this reason, it is advisable to deal with the thermal modification of wood, which does not require the application of protective substances, to increase its service life. The main reason for the thermal modification of black locust is that although black locust grows abundantly in our country, it has no industrial use. It is mainly used outdoors, where thermal modification could increase its resistance. This article deals with the thermal modification of black locust wood (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) and the impact of this modification on the chemical components of the wood with an overlap in the change in mechanical properties compared to untreated wood. Static (LOP, MOR, and MOE) and dynamic (IBS) bending properties were evaluated as representative mechanical properties. At the same time, the impact of thermal modification on the representation of chemical components of wood (cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose) was also tested. As a result of the heat treatment, the mechanical properties gradually decreased as the temperature increased. The highest decrease in mechanical values found at 210 °C was 43.7% for LOP and 45.1% for MOR. Thermal modification caused a decrease in the content of wood polysaccharides (the decrease in hemicelluloses content was 33.2% and the drop in cellulose was about 29.9% in samples treated at 210 °C), but the relative amount of lignin in the wood subjected to increased temperature was higher due to autocondensation, and mainly because of polysaccharide loss. Based on the correlations between chemical and mechanical changes caused by thermal modification, it is possible to observe the effects of reducing the proportions of chemical components and changes in their characteristic properties (DP, TCI) on the reduction in mechanical properties. The results of this research serve to better understand the behavior of black locust wood during thermal modification, which can primarily be used to increase its application use.

Although many biological properties of Houttuynia cordata have been found, its anti-aging and anti-acne effects have not yet been investigated. This study was aimed to evaluate the in vitro anti-aging and anti-acne activities of H. cordata extracts and their cytotoxic activities and phytochemicals analyzed with liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Dried aerial parts of H. cordata were given different extractions. The aqueous and ethanolic extracts obtained were named HCA and HCE, respectively, and used to screen total phenolic and flavonoid contents. In vitro anti-aging, skin-related antimicrobial, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in vitro cytotoxic, and LC-MS/MS analyses were performed. The total phenolic contents of the HCA and HCE were 5.11 ± 0.25 and 27.02 ± 1.07 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry extract while their total flavonoid contents were 104.94 ± 5.16 and 571.86 ± 2.86 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g dry extract, respectively. The HCA and HCE inhibited the activities of collagenase (28.33–46.00%), elastase (30.00–34.33%), and hyaluronidase (93.87–98.72%). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the HCA against Cutibacterium acnes DMST14916 were 5.77 and 5.77 mg/mL while those of the HCE were 2.47 and 2.47 mg/mL, respectively. Cell collapses of C. acnes after treatment with the extracts were observed with SEM. The HCE was not toxic to macrophages, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts up to 400 mg/mL. The HCA showed toxicity against macrophages at 62.5 mg/mL and both skin cells at 250 mg/mL. The main phytochemicals in the extracts were identified with LC-MS/MS. Phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and flavonoid derivatives in H. cordata extracts could be major phytochemicals to possess a broad spectrum of biological activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-aging activities. The findings from this study showed that the HCE has potential anti-aging and anti-acne properties while having non-cytotoxic activities on the immune and skin cells. These results indicate that the extract is probably advantageous in the development of skincare cosmeceutics and beauty treatments.

The oppida at Alarcos and El Cerro de las Cabezas (Ciudad Real, Spain) were two of the most important Iberian sites in the Proto-history (8th-3th centuries BC.) the Northern Oretania. Archaeological studies have been published since the 80s; however this paper is the first that provides archaeometric results from the chemical and mineralogical analysis of 107 ceramic fragments of Iberian common pottery. They have been analysed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). From the chemical results, a statistical study has been carried out, which has allowed us to create reference groups (RG) and to determine the economic relationships between the two sites studied and their areas of influence. At a technological level, the results from the mineralogical analysis have allowed us to estimate the firing temperatures (EFT) and to classify the ceramic fragments into 3 fabrics with their respective temperature ranges.

Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyl, family Lamiaceae, is an important and popular anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). However, there are limited scientific studies on its anatomy and pharmacological activities. Moreover, the information of chemical constituents in relation to its non-volatile constituents are still missing. The current study aimed to evaluate the anatomic, pharmacological and phytochemical profile of Elsholtzia ciliata, providing means for the quality control of this herbal drug. The methodology designed for this study included the preparation of anatomic sections and their description, extraction, chromatography, structural elucidation of isolated compounds by NMR techniques and their quantification by HPLC using pharmacological assays (Formalin, hot plate, DPPH, antimicrobial-Gram positive, Gram Negative and fungus, and MTT assays) to confirm the activities described for this species. Results of the anatomic study are aligned with the pattern expected for plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family; Ursolic acid and Oroxylin were isolated from this plant species. The findings observed in this study indicate that Elsholtzia ciliata possess anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activities. The chemical compounds isolated from its leaves and the anatomy profile of its parts provide the basis for further quality control for this plant.

To understand how such submarine fluid conduit and venting systems form and grow, we develop a detailed mathematical model for this reaction-advection system and we quantify the evolution of an ensemble of similar filaments. We show that this growth can be described by a superposition of advection and dispersion. We analyze analog laboratory experiments of chemical-garden type to study the growth of a single filament undergoing a precipitation reaction with the surrounding environment. We apply these findings to geological fluid conduit and venting systems, showing that their irregular trajectories can lead to very effective spreading within the surrounding seabed, thus enhancing contact and exchanges of chemicals between the conduit and external fluids. We discuss how this methane venting leads to the formation of marine authigenic carbonate rocks, and for confirmation, we analyze two field samples from the Gulf of Cadiz for composition and mineralogy of the precipitates.
