Search

Professor Govind Swarup was a distinguished radio astronomer who drove the development of the field in India. Over a long career he built the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), which are world-class facilities. Swarup was born in North India, had his undergraduate and post-graduate education at the University of Allahabad and then joined the National Physical Laboratory at New Delhi. He then travelled on a fellowship to Australia, to work on radio astronomy under J. L. Pawsey (FRS 1954). Later, in the USA, he completed his PhD with Ronald N. Bracewell at Stanford. Govind then accepted an offer made by Homi Bhabha FRS to begin radio astronomy work at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TFIR). At TIFR, Govind conceived and built a novel, low cost, equatorially mounted cylindrical radio telescope, the ORT. The ORT was a versatile instrument and fuelled the growth of radio astronomy in India. In the late 1980s he conceived and led the construction of the GMRT, which again was based on a pioneering design. The GMRT is a remarkably successful instrument used by radio astronomers across the world. Govind Swarup has left behind a large group of radio astronomers who have continued his work and are finding new directions.

The atomic hydrogen (HI) properties of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe are known to correlate with other galaxy properties via the ``HI scaling relations''. The redshift evolution of these relations serves as an important constraint on models of galaxy evolution. However, until recently, there were no estimates of the HI scaling relations at cosmological distances. Using data from a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope HI 21 cm survey of the Extended Groth Strip, and the technique of spectral line stacking, we determine the scaling relation between the HI mass and the stellar mass for star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.35$. We use this measurement, along with the main-sequence relation in galaxies, to infer the dependence of the HI depletion timescale of these galaxies on their stellar mass. We find that massive star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.35$, with stellar mass $\rm M_* \gtrsim10^{9.5}\:M_{\odot}$, are HI-poor compared to local star-forming galaxies of a similar stellar mass. However, their characteristic HI depletion time is lower by a factor of $\approx 5$ than that of their local analogues, indicating a higher star-formation efficiency at intermediate redshifts (similar to that at $z \approx 1$). While our results are based on a relatively small cosmic volume and could thus be affected by cosmic variance, the short characteristic HI depletion timescales ($\lesssim 3$ Gyr) of massive star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0.35$ indicate that they must have acquired a significant amount of neutral gas through accretion from the circumgalactic medium over the past four Gyr, to avoid quenching of their star-formation activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We describe the design, data analysis, and basic results of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Cold-HI AT $z\approx1$ (GMRT-CAT$z$1) survey, a 510-hour upgraded GMRT HI 21 cm emission survey of galaxies at $z=0.74-1.45$ in the DEEP2 survey fields. The GMRT-CAT$z$1 survey is aimed at characterising HI in galaxies during and just after the epoch of peak star-formation activity in the Universe, a key epoch in galaxy evolution. We obtained high-quality HI 21 cm spectra for 11,419 blue star-forming galaxies at $z=0.74-1.45$, in seven pointings on the DEEP2 subfields. We detect the stacked HI 21 cm emission signal of the 11,419 star-forming galaxies, which have an average stellar mass of $M_* \approx 10^{10} M_\odot$, at $7.1\sigma$ statistical significance, obtaining an average HI mass of $\langle M_{HI}\rangle=(13.7\pm1.9)\times10^{9} M_\odot$. This is significantly higher than the average HI mass of $\langle M_{HI} \rangle=(3.96 \pm 0.17)\times10^{9} M_\odot$ in star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0$ with an identical stellar-mass distribution. We stack the rest-frame 1.4 GHz continuum emission of our 11,419 galaxies to infer an average star-formation rate (SFR) of $8.07\pm0.82 M_\odot yr^{-1}$. Combining our average HI mass and average SFR estimates yields an HI depletion timescale of $1.70\pm0.29$ Gyr, for star-forming galaxies at $z\approx1$, $\approx3$ times lower than that of local galaxies. We thus find that, although main-sequence galaxies at $z\approx1$ have a high HI mass, their short HI depletion timescale is likely to cause quenching of their star-formation activity in the absence of rapid gas accretion from the circumgalactic medium., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures; The Astrophysical Journal, 937, 103; updated to match published version

We report a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for Galactic H{\sc i} 21cm absorption towards the quasar B0438$-$436, yielding the detection of wide, weak H{\sc i} 21cm absorption, with a velocity-integrated H{\sc i} 21cm optical depth of $0.0188 \pm 0.0036$~km~s$^{-1}$. Comparing this with the H{\sc i} column density measured in the Parkes Galactic All-Sky Survey gives a column density-weighted harmonic mean spin temperature of $3760 \pm 365$~K, one of the highest measured in the Galaxy. This is consistent with most of the H{\sc i} along the sightline arising in the stable warm neutral medium (WNM). The low peak H{\sc i} 21cm optical depth towards B0438$-$436 implies negligible self-absorption, allowing a multi-Gaussian joint decomposition of the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption and emission spectra. This yields a gas kinetic temperature of $\rm T_k \leq (4910 \pm 1900)$~K, and a spin temperature of $\rm T_s = (1000 \pm 345)$~K for the gas that gives rise to the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption. Our data are consistent with the H{\sc i} 21cm absorption arising from either the stable WNM, with $\rm T_s \ll T_k$, $\rm T_k \approx 5000$~K, and little penetration of the background Lyman-$\alpha$ radiation field into the neutral hydrogen, or from the unstable neutral medium, with $\rm T_s \approx T_k \approx 1000\;K$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS-Letters

We use observations made with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to probe the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas content of field galaxies in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) 14h field at $z \approx 0.32$. Because the HI emission from individual galaxies is too faint to detect at this redshift, we use an HI spectral stacking technique using the known optical positions and redshifts of the 165 galaxies in our sample to co-add their HI spectra and thus obtain the average HI mass of the galaxies. Stacked HI measurements of 165 galaxies show that 95 per cent of the neutral gas is found in blue, star-forming galaxies. Among these galaxies, those having lower stellar mass are more gas-rich than more massive ones. We apply a volume correction to our HI measurement to evaluate the HI gas density at $z \approx 0.32$ as $\Omega_{HI}=(0.50\pm0.18) \times 10^{-3}$ in units of the cosmic critical density. This value is in good agreement with previous results at z < 0.4, suggesting no evolution in the neutral hydrogen gas density over the last $\sim 4$ Gyr. However the $z \approx 0.32$ gas density is lower than that at $z \sim 5$ by at least a factor of two., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of HI spectral stacking analysis of Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations targeting the COSMOS field. The GMRT data cube contains 474 field galaxies with redshifts known from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k catalogue. Spectra for the galaxies are co-added and the stacked spectrum allows us to make a $\sim 3\sigma$ measurement of the average HI mass. Using this average HI mass along with the integral optical $B$-band luminosity of the galaxies and the luminosity density of the COSMOS field, a volume normalisation is applied to obtain the cosmic HI mass density ($\Omega_{\rm HI}$). We find a cosmic HI mass density of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ = (0.42 $\pm$ 0.16) $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ at $z \sim 0.37$, which is the highest-redshift measurement of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ ever made using HI spectral stacking. The value we obtained for $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ at $z \sim 0.37$ is consistent with that measured from large blind 21-cm surveys at $z = 0$ as well as measurements from other HI stacking experiments at lower redshifts. Our measurement in conjunction with earlier measurements indicates that there has been no significant evolution of HI gas abundance over the last 4 Gyr. A weighted mean of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ from all 21-cm measurements at redshifts $z \lesssim 0.4$ gives $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ = (0.35 $\pm$ 0.01) $\times$ 10$^{-3}$. The $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ measured (from HI 21-cm emission measurements) at $z \lesssim 0.4$ is however approximately half that measured from Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ Absorption (DLA) systems at $z \gtrsim 2$. Deeper surveys with existing and upcoming instruments will be critical to understand the evolution of $\Omega_{\rm HI}$ in the redshift range intermediate between $z \sim 0.4$ and the range probed by DLA observations., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Foreground removal is a challenge for 21-cm tomography of the high redshift Universe. We use archival GMRT data (obtained for completely different astronomical goals) to estimate the foregrounds at a redshift ~ 1. The statistic we use is the cross power spectrum between two frequencies separated by \Delta{\nu} at the angular multipole l, or equivalently the multi-frequency angular power spectrum C_l(\Delta{\nu}). An earlier measurement of C_l(\Delta{\nu}) using this data had revealed the presence of oscillatory patterns along \Delta{\nu}, which turned out to be a severe impediment for foreground removal (Ghosh et al. 2011). Using the same data, in this paper we show that it is possible to considerably reduce these oscillations by suppressing the sidelobe response of the primary antenna elements. The suppression works best at the angular multipoles l for which there is a dense sampling of the u-v plane. For three angular multipoles l = 1405, 1602 and 1876, this sidelobe suppression along with a low order polynomial fitting completely results in residuals of (\leq 0.02 mK^2), consistent with the noise at the 3{\sigma} level. Since the polynomial fitting is done after estimation of the power spectrum it can be ensured that the estimation of the HI signal is not biased. The OH molecule, found abundantly in the Milky Way, has four transitions at the ground state rotational level(J = 3/2) at cm wavelengths. These are E1 transitions between the F+ and F- hyperfine levels of the Lambda doublet of the J=3/2 state. There are also forbidden M1 transitions between the hyperfine levels within each of the doublet states occuring at frequencies 53.171 MHz and 55.128 MHz. These are extremely weak and hence difficult to detect. However there is a possibility that the level populations giving rise to these lines are inverted under special conditions, in which case it may be possible to detect them through their maser emission. We describe the observational diagnostics for determining when the hyperfine levels are inverted, and identify a region near W44 where these conditions are satisfied. A high-velocity-resolution search for these hyperfine OH lines using the low frequency feeds on four antennas of the GMRT and the new GMRT Software Backend(GSB) was performed on this target near W44. We place a 3-sigma upper limit of ~17.3 Jy (at 1 km/s velocity resolution) for the 55 MHz line from this region. This corresponds to an upper limit of 3 X 10^8 for the amplification of the Galactic synchrotron emission providing the background., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Extremely metal-deficient (XMD) galaxies, by definition, have oxygen abundances \le 1/10 solar, and form a very small fraction of the local gas-rich, star-forming dwarf galaxy population. We examine their positions in the luminousity-metallicity (L-Z) and mass-metallicity (M-Z) planes, with respect to the L-Z and M-Z relations of other gas-rich, star-forming dwarf galaxies, viz., blue compact galaxies (BCGs) and dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies. We find that while the metallicities of some low-luminousity XMD galaxies are consistent with those expected from the L-Z relation, other XMD galaxies are deviant. We determine the 95 per cent confidence interval around the L-Z relation for BCGs, and find that its lower boundary is given by 12 + log(O/H) = -0.177 M_{B} + 4.87. We suggest that a galaxy should be regarded as XMD, in a statistically significant manner, only if it lies below this boundary in the L-Z plane. Of our sample of XMD galaxies, we find that more than half are XMD by this criterion. We also determine the gas mass fractions and chemical yields of galaxies in all three samples. We find that the effective chemical yield increases with increasing baryonic mass, consistent with what is expected if outflows of metal-enriched gas are important in determining the effective yield. XMD galaxies have lower effective yield than BCG/dI galaxies of similar baryonic mass. Motivated by the fact that interactions are common in XMD galaxies, we suggest that improved (tidally-driven) mixing of the interstellar media (ISM) in XMD galaxies leads to a lowering of both, the measured metallicity and the calculated effective yield. We suggest that XMD galaxies are deviant from the L-Z relation because of a combination of being gas-rich (i.e., having processed less gas into stars) and having more uniform mixing of metals in their ISM., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We estimate the power spectrum of HI intensity fluctuations for a sample of 8 galaxies (7 dwarf and one spiral). The power spectrum can be fitted to a power law P_HI(U) = A U^\alpha for 6 of these galaxies, indicating turbulence is operational. The estimated best fit value for the slope ranges from ~ -1.5 (AND IV, NGC 628, UGC 4459 and GR 8) to ~ -2.6 (DDO 210 and NGC 3741). We interpret this bi-modality as being due to having effectively 2D turbulence on length scales much larger than the scale height of the galaxy disk and 3D otherwise. This allows us to use the estimated slope to set bounds on the scale heights of the face-on galaxies in our sample. We also find that the power law slope remains constant as we increase the channel thickness for all these galaxies, suggesting that the fluctuations in HI intensity are due to density fluctuations and not velocity fluctuations, or that the slope of the velocity structure function is ~ 0. Finally, for the four galaxies with "2D turbulence" we find that the slope \alpha correlates with the star formation rate per unit area, with larger star formation rates leading to steeper power laws. We report evidence for an anti-correlation between spin temperature $T_s$ and metallicity [Z/H], detected at $3.6 ��$ significance in a sample of 26 damped Lyman-$��$ absorbers (DLAs) at redshifts $0.09 < z < 3.45$. The anti-correlation is detected at $3 ��$ significance in a sub-sample of 20 DLAs with measured covering factors, implying that it does not stem from low covering factors. We obtain $T_s = (-0.68 \pm 0.17) \times {\rm [Z/H]} + (2.13 \pm 0.21)$ from a linear regression analysis. Our results indicate that the high $T_s$ values found in DLAs do not arise from differences between the optical and radio sightlines, but are likely to reflect the underlying gas temperature distribution. The trend between $T_s$ and [Z/H] can be explained by the larger number of radiation pathways for gas cooling in galaxies with high metal abundances, resulting in a high cold gas fraction, and hence, a low spin temperature. Conversely, low-metallicity galaxies have fewer cooling routes, yielding a larger warm gas fraction and a high $T_s$. Most DLAs at $z>1.7$ have low metallicities, [Z/H] $< -1$, implying that the HI in high-$z$ DLAs is predominantly warm. The anti-correlation between $T_s$ and [Z/H] is consistent with the presence of a mass-metallicity relation in DLAs, suggested by the tight correlation between DLA metallicity and the kinematic widths of metal lines. Most high-$z$ DLAs are likely to arise in galaxies with low masses ($M_{\rm vir} < 10^{10.5} M_\odot$), low metallicities ([Z/H]$< -1$, and low cold gas fractions., 5 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present an analysis of HI, H-alpha, and oxygen abundance data for NGC 3741. This galaxy has a very extended gas disk (~8.8 times the Holmberg radius), and a dark to luminous (i.e. stellar) mass ratio of ~149, which makes it one of the ``darkest'' dwarf irregular galaxies known. However its ratio of baryons (i.e. gas + stellar) mass to dark mass is typical of that in galaxies. Our new high-resolution HI images of the galaxy show evidence for a large scale (purely gaseous) spiral arm and central bar. Despite the gaseous spiral feature and the on-going star formation, we find that the global gas density in NGC 3741 is significantly lower than the Toomre instability criterion. We also find that the star formation rate is consistent with that expected from the observed correlations between HI mass and SFR and the global Kennicutt-Schmidt law respectively. We measure the oxygen abundance to be 12+ log(O/H)=7.66$\pm$0.10, which is consistent with that expected from the metallicity-luminosity relation, despite its extreme gas mass ratio. We also examine the issue of chemical evolution of NGC 3741 in the context of closed-box model of chemical evolution. The effective oxygen yield of NGC 3741 is consistent with recent model estimates of closed-box yields, provided one assumes that the gas has been efficiently mixed all the way to edge of the HI disk (i.e. >8 times the optical radius). This seems a priori unlikely. On the other hand, using a sample of galaxies with both interferometric HI maps and chemical abundance measurements, we find that the effective yield is anti-correlated with the total dynamical mass, as expected in leaky box models (slightly abridged)., 9 pages, 10 Figures. We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21-cm line data for the smallest known eXtremely Metal Deficient (XMD) blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS0822+3542. From HST imaging it has been suggested that HS0822+3542 actually consists of two still smaller (~ 100pc sized) ultra-compact dwarfs that are in the process of merging. The brighter of these two putative ultra compact dwarfs has an ocular appearance, similar to that seen in galaxies that have suffered a penetrating encounter with a smaller companion. From our HI imaging we find that the gas distribution and kinematics in this object are similar to that of other low mass galaxies, albeit with some evidence for tidal disturbance. On the other hand, the HI emission has an angular size ~25 times larger than that of the putative ultra-compact dwarfs. The optical emission is also offset from the centre of the HI emission. HS0822+3542 is located in the Lynx-Cancer void, but has a nearby companion LSB dwarf galaxy SAO0822+3545. In light of all this we also consider a scenario where the optical emission from HS0822+3542 comes not from two merging ultra-compact dwarfs but from multiple star forming regions in a tidally disturbed galaxy. We present results of deep, high velocity resolution ($\sim$1.6 kms$^{-1}$) Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21 cm-line observations of a sample of extremely faint (M$_B>-$12.5) dwarf irregular galaxies. Unlike previous studies, we find large scale velocity gradients in even the faintest galaxies of our sample i.e. their velocity fields are not "chaotic". For some of our sample galaxies, where the velocity fields are in fact completely consistent with ordered rotation, we derive rotation curves and determine the structure of the dark matter halos of the galaxies from mass modeling, using the "asymmetric drift" corrected rotation velocities. Finally, we compile from literature a sample of galaxies with known dark matter distribution, estimated from HI synthesis observations, and discuss the results and their implications for hierarchical galaxy formation models., 8 Pages, 5 figures. We report high spectral resolution Australia Telescope Compact Array HI 21 cm observations resulting in the detection of the warm neutral medium (WNM) of the Galaxy in absorption against two extragalactic radio sources, PKS 1814-637 and PKS 0407-658. The two lines of sight were selected on the basis of the simplicity of their absorption profiles and the strength of the background sources; the high velocity resolution of the spectra then enabled us to estimate the kinetic temperatures of the absorbing gas by fitting multiple Gaussians to the absorption profiles. Four separate WNM components were detected toward the two sources, with peak optical depths $��_{max} = (1.0 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-2}$, $(1.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-3}$, $(2.2 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-3}$ and $(3.4 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-3}$ and kinetic temperatures $T_{k} = 3127 \pm 300$ K, $3694 \pm 1595$ K, $3500 \pm 1354$ K and $2165 \pm 608$ K respectively. All four components were thus found to have temperatures in the thermally unstable range $500 < T_{k} < 5000$ K; this suggests that thermal equilibrium has not been reached throughout the WNM., 5 pages, 6 figures. We present deep GMRT 21cm absorption spectra of 10 damped Lyman-$��$ systems (DLAs), of which 8 are at redshifts $z \ga 1.3$. HI absorption was detected in only one DLA, the $z = 0.5318$ absorber toward PKS 1629+12, which has been identified with a luminous spiral galaxy; the spin temperature limit ($T_s \le 310$ K) derived from our observations continues the trend of DLAs associated with bright spirals having low spin temperatures. In 7 of the remaining 9 systems, the observations place strong lower limits on the spin temperature of the HI gas. The sample of DLAs searched for 21cm absorption now consists of 31 systems, with $T_s$ estimates available in 24 cases; of these, 16 are at $z < 2$ and 8 at $z > 2$, with 11 (all at $z < 1$) having optical IDs. For the latter 11 systems, we find that all low $T_s$ DLAs have been identified with luminous galaxies, while all high $T_s$ ($T_s \ga 1000$ K) DLAs have been identified with either LSBs or dwarfs. DLA spin temperatures thus appear to correlate with galaxy type, with no correlation seen between $T_s$ and impact parameter. The trend that low $z$ DLAs exhibit both high and low $T_s$ values while high redshift ($z \ga 3$) DLAs only show high spin temperatures is present in this expanded data set. Based on this difference in spin temperatures, the Gehan test rules out the hypothesis that DLAs at $z > 2$ and DLAs at $z < 2$ are drawn from the same parent population at ~ 99 % confidence level. Finally, we estimate upper limits on the fraction of cold HI, $f_{CNM}$, in the $z \ga 3$ DLAs. In local spirals, $f_{CNM} \sim 0.5$; in contrast, we find that $f_{CNM} < 0.3$ in all 7 high $z$ DLAs, with $f_{CNM} < 0.1$ in 5 of the 7 cases. (abridged), 13 pages, 5 figures. We report Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) 21cm observations of two confirmed and one candidate low redshift damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAS). HI absorption was detected in the two confirmed systems, at z=0.2378 and z=0.5247, with spin temperatures (Ts) of 2050 +- 200 K and 330 +- 70 K respectively. The non-detection of absorption in the third (candidate) system places an upper limit on its optical depth, which in turn implies a 3sigma lower limit of 850 K on its spin temperature. Ground based K-band imaging observations (Turnshek et al. 2000) have identified the low Ts absorber with a spiral galaxy while the high Ts system appears to be an LSB galaxy. This continues the trend noted earlier by Chengalur and Kanekar (2000) of low spin temperatures for DLAS associated with spiral galaxies and high spin temperatures for those with no such association. Combining these new results with 21cm observations from the published literature, we find that (1)The 21 cm equivalent width (EW21) of DLAS increases with increasing column density (NHI). Further, absorbers associated with spiral galaxies have systematically higher EW21 at the same NHI than DLAS with no such association, (2)DLAS at high redshift (z > 2) have small velocity spreads (DeltaV), while, at low redshift (z < 2), both large and small DeltaV are observed. We discuss Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) HI 21cm data for the galaxy cluster A3128. Our observations are intentionally relatively shallow, and a blind search through our data cube yields (tentative) detections of only two galaxies, of which one is probably spurious. A3128 is part of the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS); redshifts are available for 193 galaxies in the A3128 region. For 148 of these galaxies the redshifts are such that the HI emission (if any) would lie within our data cube. We use the known redshifts of these galaxies to coadd their spectra and thus improve our sensitivity to HI emission. The technique is fairly successful -- the coadded spectra allow detection of an average mass content of ~ 9x10^8 Msun, almost an order of magnitude lower than for direct detection of individual objects. By dividing the total galaxy sample into subsamples we find that the gas content of late type galaxies that lie outside the X-ray emitting core of the cluster is substantially higher than that of those within the core. Even outside the X-ray emitting region the distribution of gas-rich galaxies in the cluster is not uniform, we find that gas-rich galaxies are concentrated in the east of the cluster. This is consistent with earlier analyses of the kinematics of the galaxies in A3128 which indicate the presence of subclustering. In summary we find that coadding spectra is a powerful tool for the study of HI in cluster galaxies, and suggest that this technique could be applied to substantially increase the redshift range over which such observations could be carried out., 8pages, 7 figures accepted for publication in A&A

We report a deep search for 21 cm emission/absorption from the $z \sim 0.101$ candidate damped Lyman-$��$ system towards PKS 0439-433, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The spectrum shows a weak absorption feature --- at the $3.3 ��$ level --- which yields a lower limit of 730 K on the spin temperature of the system. No HI emission was detected: the $3��$ upper limit on the HI mass of the absorber is $2.25 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$, for a velocity spread of $\sim 70$ km s$^{-1}$. The low HI mass and the high spin temperature seem to rule out the possibility that the absorber is a large gas-rich spiral galaxy., 5 pages, 4 figures. Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report on WSRT observations of HI and OH absorption at z=0.885 towards the radio lens PKS 1830-21, mm wave transitions of several molecular species have already been observed at this redshift. At mm wavelengths the source structure is dominated by two extremely compact components, the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) components. At lower frequencies the continuum emission is much more extended and there is also a broad Einstein ring connecting the NE and SW components. This means that the HI and OH spectra sample a much larger region of the absorber than the mm wave spectra. The HI spectrum that we obtain is asymmetric, with a peak at -147 km/s with respect to the main molecular line redshift of z=0.88582. Weak mm wave molecular absorption has also been detected towards the NE component at this same velocity. The HI absorption, however, covers a total velocity width of 300 km/sec, i.e. including velocities well to the red of molecular features suggesting that it is spatially widespread. In OH we detect both the 1667 and the 1665 MHz transitions. The OH spectrum has a velocity width comparable to that of the HI spectrum, suggesting that it too is widespread in the absorber. The lack of a prominent HI peak in the spectrum at the velocity corresponding to the SW component, suggests that the galaxy responsible for the absorption at z=0.885 has a central molecular disk many kpc in size, and that HI is deficient in this central region. Our observations are sensitive to the large scale kinematics of the absorber, and to first order the implied dynamical mass is consistent with the lens models of Nair et. al. We report on a deep search with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope towards the galactic anticenter for the 327 MHz hyperfine transition of DI. This is a favorable direction for a search because: (i) the HI optical depth is high due to velocity crowding; (ii) the observed molecular column density is low (implying that most of the deuterium would probably be in atomic form, rather than in HD); and (iii) the stellar reprocessing should be minimal. Our observations are about a factor of two more sensitive than previous searches for DI in this direction. We detect a low significance (about 4 sigma) feature, consistent in both amplitude and center frequency with an emission feature reported previously (Blitz & Heiles 1987). If this is the DI line, then the implied N_D/N_H of 3.9+/-1.0 x 10^-5 is comparable to the inferred pre-solar deuterium abundance. Our observation is consistent with the recent low measurements of D/H towards high-redshift Lyman-limit systems. On the other hand, if the reports of high DI abundance (about 24 x 10^-5) in such systems are confirmed, then our observations imply that even in regions of reduced star formation within the outer Galaxy, the DI abundance has been reduced by a factor of about 6 from the primordial abundance., 4 page LaTeX requires l-aa.sty and psfig.sty, 1 ps figure. Ground based optical observations have yielded considerable information on the statistics of damped-lyman alpha systems. In particular these systems are known to be the dominant repository of the observed neutral gas at high redshift. However, particularly at high redshift, there is the possibility that optical observations could be biased due to the exclusion of damped-lyman alpha systems that contain moderate to significant amounts of dust. Independent observational constraints on the neutral hydrogen content at high redshifts and the amount of dust in high redshift systems can be obtained from a radio search against the bright lobes of distant radio galaxies (which is less affected by the presence of dust in foreground damped-lyman alpha systems). We describe here a pilot radio survey along the line of sight to a small sample of high redshift radio galaxies, and also present some preliminary results.
