We report experimental findings on distribution decisions by Germans and Egyptians. We explore their sensitivity along three different dimensions: we study (i) the impact of the price of giving, (ii) how giving responds to the cultural and gender identity of the recipient, and (iii) how a threat of rejection in a bargaining situation affects the distribution choice. We show substantial differences in generosity between participants in Egypt vs. Germany, the former showing substantial equality-seeking behavior. Correspondingly, both genders in Egypt increase giving when it becomes more costly as do German females, in contrast to German males who give particularly when it is cheap. While Egyptian participants choose according to an equality norm independently of the recipient’s identity, we detect substantial discrimination by German females when giving to Egyptian males. This discrimination is in line with prejudice as males in Egypt give significantly more than what Germans expect from them. Conversely, males in Egypt overestimate the generosity of Germans towards them. We finally show that, relative to giving in the dictator game, the ultimatum game offers increase among German participants, but not among participants in Egypt. Females in Egypt even decrease giving in UG relative to DG when allocating to males in Egypt. This finding is in line with highly favorable offers being rejected by a substantial fraction of participants in Egypt.

Seit 2014 ist in der Ukraine deutlich ein Wechsel vom Russischen hin zum Ukrainischen zu bemerken, der mit der großangelegten Invasion Russlands von 2022 intensiviert hat. Der russische Einmarsch mag zwar der offensichtlichste Grund sein, dass nun vermehrt Ukrainisch gesprochen wird, doch ist er nicht der einzige. Bei diesem Wandel spielen auch ganz praktische Gründe eine Rolle.

Anders als von Putin erwartet haben die meisten Ukrainer auf die großflächige Invasion Russlands in die Ukraine mit einer stärkeren Verbundenheit mit ihrem Land und ihrer Nation reagiert. Ein Element dieser Verbundenheit ist die Zuwendung zu ihrer Nationalsprache, symbolisch wie auf Kommunikationsebene. Dabei haben die Ukrainer nicht nur eine stärkere Verbundenheit mit zu ihrer Sprache entwickelt, sondern auch begonnen, sie im Alltag mehr zu sprechen. Zumindest sagen sie das neuen Umfragen zufolge.

Examinamos las transformaciones o conflictos que se presentan en la cultura jurídica chilena, en relación con el derecho a la identidad cultural de pueblos indígenas y otros grupos. Al efecto, la investigación: (i) formula una metodología especializada, interdisciplinaria que comprende el estudio del campo jurídico en su conjunto: contexto, normas constitucionales, las prácticas de los operadores, sus comprensiones y cómo se reflejan en la jurisprudencia; (ii) aplicando dicha metodología, estudia las transformaciones o tensiones que se pueden identificar en la cultura jurídica chilena en relación con el derecho a la identidad cultural.

The use of multicultural principles to enhance cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for individuals of marginalized backgrounds has received increased attention in light of the heightened national awareness of systemic oppression and racialized violence directed towards Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. However, there has been less of a focus on applying such principles to consultation for skill development. If ethical guidelines are expected to influence the behavior of clinicians in session, guidance is needed to indicate how and where and when clinicians should receive training in implementing culturally responsive CBT. Individual reading and reflection are necessary but are not sufficient in acquiring new clinical skills. Consultation is recommended and strongly suggested when clinicians are working with new populations or delivering a new treatment, or even using a new modality. Consultation can also be useful when adopting a new approach or stance to therapy. For practicing clinicians who have not developed these skills, additional consultation can and should be used to address this gap. Moving forward, integration of cultural responsiveness into standard consultation will ensure that these skills are seen as a core competency, rather than an optional additional skill that may be (or not be) elected. This paper presents core experiences that may be integral to a CBT consultation model that aims to enhance providers’ ability to provide CBT in a way that is culturally responsive to their clients. These recommendations attend to both content and process within CBT consultation and reflect guiding assumptions for helping clinicians to develop the ability to practice CBT in a culturally responsive manner, including (a) normalizing discussions of cultural identity and oppression, (b) an emphasis on cultural self-awareness, (c) emphasizing culturally informed CBT case conceptualization, and (d) skill development in applying cultural elements to CBT interventions.

While studies on the relationship between social determinants and mental health among transgender people in Asia are increasing, there is a paucity of research on Asian transgender people living in Western countries. This study aimed to examine how social positions (gender, ethnicity, and migrant status) and social determinants of mental health were inter-related for Asian transgender people in Aotearoa/New Zealand.We analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data from Asian participants (Overall, 35% reported a very high psychological distress level. There were high levels of unmet needs for gender-affirming care, and participants reported a range of negative experiences at health care settings. About two-fifths had been discriminated because of their transgender (42%) or Asian (39%) identities. Fewer than half of participants felt that their family members were supportive of them being transgender (44%), and most reported they had supportive friends (73%). More than two-thirds of participants (68%) had a strong sense of belongingness to the transgender community and 35% reported this for the Asian community. Qualitative findings revealed specific challenges that participants experienced; these included barriers to accessing health care due to their migrant status and language barriers, influences of Asian cultures on mental health experiences, and rejection by family and people in Asian communities.Our study provides evidence for health care providers, researchers, and policy makers to employ a culturally appropriate lens to improve knowledge about the intersectional experiences of being Asian and transgender.

Dentro de nuestra experiencia sociocultural, estamos implicados/as en continuos procesos de identificación en los que nos preguntamos sobre quiénes somos, de dónde venimos, quiénes son nuestras familias, qué es eso que tanto contenemos para decir o aportar a la sociedad. En fin. Son una multiplicidad de cuestionamientos que cada vez más nos invitan a reflexionar acerca de nuestros encuentros y diálogos con otros y otras de distintas procedencias y contextos sociales, culturales, políticos, económicos y simbólicos, porque a partir de estas relaciones damos algo de forma a nuestro inacabado proceso de identificación. De este modo, para este texto me he pensado estas reflexiones, procesos y encuentros a través de la manera en cómo los murales del estallido social del 2021 se formaron, a partir de discursos que me han permitido pensarme lo que soy en cuanto a la raza y la etnicidad, y a partir de la autoetnografía, como el enfoque que permitió aproximarme al encuentro conmigo misma.

Climate change poses a threat not only to the environmental and physical aspects of the places where people live, but also to their identities and ways of living, as well as those of the communities around them. Conducted as part of the requirements of the Master of Advanced Studies in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), this capstone project consists of a climate vulnerability assessment of the La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site World Heritage Site in Puerto Rico, based on a literature review of existing scientific data. Its purpose is to inform a broader effort led by SIO’s Human Ecology Lab, which will complement this top-down approach with a bottom-up assessment of climate change threats to the area based on the perspectives of local stakeholders. This project includes two products: the full climate vulnerability assessment presented below and an online summary of its main findings with interactive maps, which can be found athttps://arcg.is/1quumK. Ultimately, this project contributes to the ongoing development of a climate vulnerability assessment tool for cultural heritage that can be used independently by stakeholders to meaningfully assess the vulnerability of their own cultural heritage to climate change through a decentralized process that can inspire local climate action, inform decision-making at different levels, and be repeated consistently as the components of vulnerability change over time. Bangladesh’s ages old Bengali culture and heritage started from its language. Bangladesh has appeared as an independent country not long ago. It had to pay millions of lives within short period of time for its independence from Pakistan. This study will try to focus on the root cause which had affected the public perceptions and mobilise them towards war and defined their cultural identity. This article also discusses culture, cultural and political identity and their relationship in changing political thought and lastly the development of Bengali cultural identity into a political one in Muslim majority Bangladesh.

The State of Qatar has witnessed rapid urban activity and development in the decades since the discovery of oil, which has led to a large-scale change in the local cultural heritage and behavior of its residents. This uncontrolled rapid urbanization, along with the acceleration of globalization and modernity that has encompassed all areas, especially the city of Doha, has led to the deterioration and destruction of the downtown area of Msheireb. These transformations threaten the identity and local culture of Qatari society, affecting the place’s sense of identity. The country’s authorities have rushed to implement strategies and development plans aimed at redeveloping the old city center and improving the environment by creating innovative and inspiring living spaces that enable both locals and foreigners to communicate and integrate with one another to restore a sense of community. This study addresses the “Msheireb Downton Doha” project and the consequences of globalization. The study examines the concept of “deterritorialization” as a cultural condition that has pushed Msheireb Downtown Doha from modernity to postmodernism as an element of globalization. In this study, I will analyze the reconstruction of Msheireb, which helped to move the city toward cultural universality while simultaneously reducing regional borders. The study will analyze the extent to which this process succeeded or failed in preserving the spirit of the area’s traditional architectural heritage and cultural identity in a manner that reflects the genuine sentiments and values of Qatari society. Attempts at reinvigorating mythical sensations of shared values and cultural identities happen particularly at times of dislocatory events in a community’s history, when ‘the national Self’ is perceived to be threatened by external forces. Such a critical moment for China was the collision between a US surveillance plane and a Chinese F-8 jet fighter on April 1, 2001, and the ensuing diplomatic standoff between the US and China. As the Chinese authorities and the state media viewed this incident in a series of ambiguous incidents involving the US, it was concluded that the collision had been the inevitable outcome of US hegemonism intended to provoke China. It is this concurrence of events, triggering feelings of disempowerment of the Self that causes recurrent flurries of heated anti-Other rhetoric. Boundaries of exclusion/inclusion along cultural, historical and political lines set up the Other as the negative mirror of the Self, which as a consequence is positively reasserted. Informed by insights from Language Pragmatics and Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper sets out to examine linguistic tools of alienation and empowerment in the Chinese official press narratives about the collision, comprising the Chinese-language Renmin Ribao, its English equivalent The People’s Daily and the English-language China Daily. It aims to trace processes of meaning generation, in particular discursive practices of an ideological nature, such as antagonistic portrayals of in- and outgroups, hegemonic exercise of power, as well as naturalized conceptualizations of contingent processes, structures and relations.

The creation, diffusion and success of television programs generally known as talk shows have made of this type of broadcasts a true speech genre characteristic of societies and cultures where it is produced and/or consumed. These programs may be interpreted as anthropological showcases, firstly, in terms of the topics and participants in the debate, and, secondly, as an example of democratic exchange of ideas. Identities are presented and negotiated through interlocutive behavior as well as through the discourse strategies used by different contributors. The general purpose of this article is to analyze the relationship between socio-cultural identities and communicative strategies in one particular case: One of the programs of La vida en un xip (a top rating talk show produced by the Catalan television network, TV3), where the topic was 'neighborhood watch against drug traffic'. In this analysis, special attention is paid to the discourse behavior of each participant. This behavior is (a pioi) related to socio-cultural identity (role, status, communicative contract), and also contributes to (re)creating and reinforcing identity. Discourse behavior is shown both in the interlocutive dimension (type and number of turns, interruptions and time occupied) and the enwtciative dimension (the presentation and argumentation of each particular verbal product). These two dimensions enable us to (i) build a discursive picture of each participant in the debate which has a very close connection with his/her specific socio-cultural identity, and (ii) compare these pictures in the context of a particular program.

This paper examines how orientation to cultural identities in an Irish language class in the United States is used to negotiate issues of authenticity and linguistic and cultural authority. The data were recorded in a beginning level Irish language class in Southern California, in which the teacher and all but one student were American. The Irish identity of the remaining student was highly salient to the other students and to the teacher, conferring authenticity and linguistic authority on him. The teacher's evaluations of the students ascribe authenticity and linguistic authority to the Irish student based on perceptions about his identity, in spite of his rejection of such authority. Thus, even when participants do not claim identity based Statuses, they may be imposed by others in a way that is consequential for interaction. This paper analyzes service encounters between African American customers and Korean immigrant shopkeepers. It is based on ethnographic data of tape-recorded interactions, interviews, and observations made at a Korean immigrant-owned store. The study focuses on analyzing the ways in which the participants constructed various social as well as cultural identities within the situational frames evoked. A close analysis of the talk reveals that the participants’ differing cultural backgrounds was not the most dominant interactional factor governing participants’ talk in their routinized service encounters. Instead, the majority of service encounters revolved around the various types of situated identities of participants (e.g. shopkeepers and customers) rather than their cultural/ethnic identities as African American or Korean. Based on the view of interculturality as a locally managed and situationally bound entity, this study describes the intricate ways in which the participants’ cultural (ethnic) identities were made relevant or irrelevant in the course of their interactions. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates the ways that the participants came to achieve practical ends in their interactions. It specifically shows how interculturality was not a debilitating factor that hindered the communication between the participants, but rather, that it played a positive role in helping participants to achieve multiple interactional goals.

This article discusses the musical characteristics of the concept developed since 2001 by UNESCO of specific cultural traditions worthy of international recognition. The influence of Irish music goes far beyond the Irish diaspora and deserves our attention, despite its relative discretion and the intangible nature of music and of its study outside musicological circles: one of the consequences of its progressive deterritorialisation over the last few decades is now apparent in the Irish desire to repatriate it, notably through the inclusion on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of two emblematic instruments, the uilleann pipes and the harp. Cet article aborde les caractéristiques musicales du concept développé depuis 2001 par l’UNESCO de traditions culturelles spécifiques dignes de reconnaissance internationale. Dépassant largement la diaspora irlandaise, l’influence de la musique irlandaise mérite notre attention, malgré sa relative discrétion et le caractère intangible de la musique et de son étude en dehors des cercles musicologiques : l’une des conséquences de sa déterritorialisation progressive depuis plusieurs décennies s’affiche désormais dans la volonté irlandaise de la rapatrier, notamment par l’inclusion sur la Liste du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’UNESCO de deux instruments emblématiques, le uilleann pipes et la harpe.

Since the civilizations began, humans have travelled. Food, water, safety or acquisition of resources, through trade, was the early travel goals; but the idea of travel for pleasure or exploration rapidly emerged. Today, tourism has become a collection of activities, services, and industries that deliver a travel experience for individuals or groups that are travelling away from home. Cultural Tourism has been defined as 'the movement of persons to cultural attractions away from their normal places of residence, with the intention to gather new information and experiences to satisfy their cultural needs'. These cultural needs can include the solidification of one's own cultural identity, with respect to cultural diversity. Currently, Cultural Tourism is growing in importance on the national and international levels. It has become an important instrument of knowledge; a tool for accelerating integration and a vehicle of culture. It is considered a factor of economic development on one hand; while on the other hand it’s a reflection of a society’s needs and circumstances represented through its architectural heritage. In Egypt, Heritage Identity has been affected by different eras through many factors – including political, religious and economic ones - which led to the diversity in the architecture of each period of time over the ages. Therefore, we can say that Egypt enjoys a distinguished cultural heritage, accumulated over thousands of years.

Hybridisation refers to the fusion of diverse cultural elements which generates new cultural forms that are distinct yet interconnected with one another. Previous studies affirmed that hybridisation has become part of an ongoing trend in transnational culture, emerging from a Third Space where diverse cultural elements enmesh. This study aims to explore how Mulan's cultural identity is hybridised when the folklore flows from China to America, becoming entangled within a conflict of Chinese-Western transcultural clashes. Using Jameson's cultural identity model, the paper analyses Mulan's cultural identity in three texts which are the original The Ballad of Mulan, Disney's animated movie Mulan (1998) and its subsequent life-action installment Mulan (2020). Components measuring the protagonist's cultural identity comprising vocation, class, geography, philosophy, language, biological traits with cultural aspects are compared. The findings show that the movies have particularly hybridise the protagonist's cultural identity from the aspects of geography, philosophy, and language. This results in a hybrid cultural identity with transnational markers in Mulan. The significance of the research thus lies in its contribution towards highlighting how Chinese figures are increasingly hybridised by Western influences as the Chinese culture continues to transcend transnational borders.

The present research study sought to analyze if the daily and systematic teaching of a foreign culture within the context of a bilingual school in Barranquilla constituted a risk factor for mainstream cultural identity. Research objectives aimed at determining to what degree learners used foreign cultural markers and at characterizing how school community perceived status of foreign culture. Primary data collected came from a group of fifth grade students. The research study used a qualitative approach with an ethnographic case study design. Concepts explored in theoretical framework are culture, language, identity, and intercultural competences. Research results indicate that learners have not adopted a foreign cultural identity and that mainstream culture prevails in school ground. It is inferred based on results that the teaching of a foreign culture does not necessarily compromise mainstream cultural identity. However, further research is necessary to specify which factors safeguarded community’s cultural identity from foreign one.

Resumen Este artículo recoge los resultados de una investigación que propone comprender la relación entre los colectivos sociales en los territorios y las manifestaciones de arte urbano, como agentes de construcción identitaria en Medellín, Colombia. La metodología implementada fue cualitativa, de corte fenomenológico, cuyo alcance fue descriptivo. Se realizó un análisis de contenido a partir de las manifestaciones de arte urbano identificadas y su relación con la construcción de identidad a partir de la convivencia estética. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a miembros de diversos colectivos de arte urbano en el centro, occidente y sur de la ciudad, rastreados a partir de la etnografía visual. Dichos territorios comprenden la Comuna 13, el Corredor Vial del Tranvía de Ayacucho y la zona centro y sur como una unidad estética. A partir de ello, se propuso una reconstrucción histórica del arte urbano en Medellín y el análisis comparativo de dos tipos de intervención artística en la ciudad: la que surge de las organizaciones sociales locales e independientes, y la que se implementa desde la institucionalidad. Como resultado, se encontró que el arte urbano de la ciudad cuenta sus orígenes en las dinámicas socioculturales independientes, que serían institucionalizadas posteriormente, dinamizando transformaciones históricas, sociales, estéticas y económicas, en los entornos intervenidos. De este proceso surgen identidades colectivas que se derivan de habitar el espacio estético, urbano y público, sea como habitante y/o como protagonista de la intervención artística. Abstract This article collects the partial results of an investigation that proposes to understand the relationship between social groups in the territories and the manifestation of urban art as agents of identity construction, in Medellin, Colombia. The methodology implemented was qualitative, phenomenological, whose scope was descriptive. A content analysis was carried out based on the manifestations of urban art identified and their relationship with the construction of identity based on aesthetic coexistence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with members of various urban art collectives in the center, west and south of the city, traced from visual ethnography. These territories comprise Comuna 13, the Ayacucho Tramway Corridor and the central and southern zones as an aesthetic unit. Based on this, a historical reconstruction of urban art in Medellín was proposed and the comparative analysis of two types of artistic intervention in the city: the one that arise from local and independent social organizations and the one that is implemented from the institutional framework. As a result, it was found that the urban art of the city has its origins in the independent sociocultural dynamics, which would later be institutionalized, dynamizing historical, social, aesthetic and economic transformation in the intervened environments. Collective identities arise from this process, which are derived from inhabiting the aesthetic, urban and public space, either as an inhabitant and/or as the protagonist of artistic intervention. Resumo Este artigo coleta os resultados parciais de uma pesquisa que se propõe compreender a relação entre grupos sociais nos territórios e as manifestações da arte urbana, como agentes de construção identitária em Medellín, Colômbia. A metodologia utilizada foi qualitativa, de natureza fenomenológica, de âmbito descritivo. Realizou-se uma análise de conteúdo a partir das manifestações da arte urbana identificadas e sua relação com a construção da identidade a partir da convivência estética. Entrevistas semiestruturadas foram conduzidas com membros de vários coletivos de arte urbana no centro, oeste e sul da cidade, traçados a partir da etnografia visual. Esses territórios compreendem a Comuna 13, o Corredor do Bonde de Ayacucho e as zonas centro e sul como unidade estética. A partir disso, foi proposta uma reconstrução histórica da arte urbana em Medellín e a análise comparativa de dois tipos de intervenção artística na cidade: a que surge como a partir de organizações sociais locais e independentes e a que se realiza a partir do quadro institucional. Como resultado, constatou-se que a arte urbana da cidade tem suas origens nas dinâmicas socioculturais independentes, as quais seriam posteriormente institucionalizadas, dinamizando transformações históricas, sociais, estéticas e económicas nos ambientes intervencionados. Desse processo surgem identidades coletivas, que decorrem do habitar o espaço estético, urbano e público, seja como habitante e/ou como protagonista da intervenção artística.

This research unveiled the local wisdom values of wawar tradition that have been passed down from generation to generation among indigenous people in Kei islands that can be the driving force and conclusion to various social phenomena such as conflict, violence, and radicalism. This is a qualitative study with a descriptive analytical approach to 35 informants as the respondents. The results show that Wawar’s local wisdom values, such as Tet Yaa, can manifest respect for and respect for attitudes, actions, words, and actions concretely in everyday life. Ain Ni Ain can manifest belonging to each other, brotherhood, loving others despite different religions, ethnicities and social statuses. Ha Maren, Yel Lim can embody the attitude of helping, giving and receiving in all aspects of life. On the other hand, the findings indicated that wawar tradition was a local wisdom capable of fostering an atmosphere of civilization and social order since this tradition contained social and moral values, which were able to gather and organize the social integrity of the community from all walks of life inhabiting Kei islands. Mutual respect and sharing, spirit of brotherhood and harmony were maintained amidst the ever growing onslaught of modern culture. Hence, wawar local culture as the identity of indigenous peoples among the school and students can be developed into learning sources so that education is able to prepare future generations who have cultural identity and self-integrity based on the values of local cultures and traditions.

Identity exploration and formation is a core rumination for young people. This is heightened in youth where flux and transition are characteristic of this liminal state and intensified further in contexts where identity is disputed and opposed, such as in Northern Ireland. In this post‐colonial setting, the indigenous Irish language and community recently gained some statutory protections, but the status and place of the Irish‐speaking population continue to be strongly opposed. Drawing on focus group data with 40 young people involved in the emerging field of Irish‐medium youth work, this article explores how informal education offers an approach and setting for the development of identities in contested societies. Principles of emancipation, autonomy, and identity formation underpin the field of youth work and informal education. This dialogical approach to learning and welfare focuses on the personal and social development of young people and troubles those systems that marginalise and diminish their place in society. This article identifies how this youth work approach builds on language development to bring to life a new social world and space for Irish‐speaking young people. It identifies political activism and kinship development as key components in strengthening individual and collective identity. This article proposes a shift in emphasis from the language‐based formal education sector to exploit the under‐recognised role of informal education in the development of youth identity, cultural belonging, and language revitalisation.

This study tackled the influence of the Korean wave on the lives and cultural identities of UM Tagum College social studies students. The qualitative method was used in this study and participants were chosen via purposive sampling. Participants ranging in age from 19 to 32 years old were chosen for in-depth interviews and focus-group discussions. The results revealed that participants learn Korean culture by watching television, navigating various media, visiting Korean restaurants, listening to K-pop, and watching K-drama. The participants also discussed how the Korean wave has affected their lives as UM Tagum College Social Studies students. Participants stated how they began to imitate Korean clothes and behaviors, how they began to pull other people towards Korean culture, and how they confessed to having a broader knowledge of Korean culture and personally experiencing assimilation of Korean culture in school. The participants discussed how the Korean wave has influenced their perception regarding their identity as Filipinos; they revealed how eager they are to learn Korean and adopt Korean values. However, participants also expressed concerns about the tendency for transculturation and even compared the Filipino Film Industry to Koreans. Several participants stressed the cultural distinctions between Filipino and Korean cultures, and that both cultures were unique. In conclusion, there is no harm in admiring other cultures as long they understand one's limitations and priorities and continues to study, patronize, and love one's own culture first and foremost among others.

The recently resurfaced rumors propped up by certain Israeli circles that the Pashtuns are the lost tribe of Israel has given academic circles a lingering pause. Its biblical claims are anecdotal, its historical documentation is inconsistent, its geographic claims are incoherent, and its linguistic assertions are implausible. The claim doesn’t stand a chance of DNA verification. Politically, the claim has hit a raw nerve in Afghanistan where the legitimacy of Pashtun power as an ethnic majority is challenged while in Pakistan the Pashtun cultural identity is threatened. Amidst this hyped ethnolinguistic strife that threatens regional stability, the ‘why now’ of the resurfaced controversy is as unnerving as the ‘why then’ of its origins is disconcerting. This article examines the claim from historical, cultural, linguistic, and genetic perspectives as it explores the root causes of how the rumors may have started in the first place and the reasons for its persistence.

Native Americans are the least represented population in science fields. In recent years, undergraduate and graduate level summer research programs that aimed to increase the number of Native Americans in science have made some progress. As new programs are designed, key characteristics that address science self-efficacy and science identity and provide supports for Native American students’ commitment to a scientific career should be considered. In this study, we used sequential mixed methods to investigate the potential of culturally tailored internship programs on Native American persistence in science. We analyzed surveys (n = 47) and interviews (n = 4) with Native American students to understand their perceptions of themselves in relation to science research and how summer research experiences might develop science identities. Based on regression modeling, science identity, but not science self-efficacy, predicted intent to persist in science. In turn, science self-efficacy and Native American identity predicted science identity, and this suggests cultural identity is central to Native American persistence in science. In interviews, students’ comments reinforced these findings and shed light on students’ reasoning about the kinds of science experiences they sought; specifically, they chose to participate in culturally tailored internships because these programs provided a sense of belonging to the scientific community that did not conflict with their cultural identities. Based on our analysis, we propose an Indigenous science internship model and recommend that agencies target funding for culturally tailored programs from high school through early-investigator levels as well as provide inclusive programmatic and mentoring guidelines.

Este artículo pretende reflexionar en torno a la relevancia de la traducción en cuanto a la construcción de la identidad en el mundo contemporáneo. Con este objetivo, nos centramos, de forma sucinta, en novelas que resultan ser propuestas narrativas excepcionales a este respecto: The Translator (1999), de la sudanesa Leila Aboulela, The Interpreter (2003), de la coreano-norteamericana Suki Kim, y The Mission Song (2006), del británico John Le Carré. Todos estos textos promueven, desde diversas perspectivas y matices, un profundo punto de vista traductológico de naturaleza posestructuralista, en el que la traducción y la interpretación son formas de vida y alegorías de la identidad transcultural.

This article examines two cases of folklorization led by teachers in Peru between 1939 and 1971, and characterized by the participation of the indigenous and mestizo subjects whose local cultures were transformed into folklore. These cases show teachers as active agents of cultural change in Andean schools, who were responding to de-Indianization by promoting a serrano (pertaining to the Sierra) regional identity among their students. In this fashion, teachers were reinventing “local traditions” to produce a new popular identity based on a common regional bond, through which indigenous and mestizo populations could negotiate new waves of cultural interaction with modernity and national society. The first case analyzes the projects of Jose Maria Arguedas and Emilio Barrantes to bring local folklore to the school curriculum and to promote an Andean popular culture. The second case explores school folklore competitions organized autonomously by provincial teachers, in which traditional dances were folklorized and turned into a popular spectacle. While framing both folklorization cases within the study of teachers as local intellectuals, the article also highlights the importance of a magisterial culture in Peru that, drawing from the progressive education movement, viewed teachers as agents of sociocultural change and nationalism. Resumen Este articulo estudia dos casos de folklorizacion realizados por maestros peruanos entre 1939 y 1971, y caracterizados por la participacion de los individuos indigenas y mestizos cuyas culturas estaban siendo transformadas en folklor. Estos casos muestran a los maestros como agentes activos de cambio cultural en las escuelas andinas, respondiendo a la desindianizacion al promover una identidad regional serrana entre los estudiantes. De tal manera, los maestros estaban reinventando las tradiciones locales con el fin de producir una nueva identidad popular basada en un vinculo regional comun, y a traves de la cual las poblaciones indigenas y mestizas pudieran negociar nuevas maneras de interaccion cultural con la modernidad y la sociedad nacional. El primer caso analiza los proyectos de Jose Maria Arguedas y Emilio Barrantes para integrar el folklor local en el curriculo escolar. El segundo explora los concursos folkloricos escolares organizados por maestros provinciales, en los cuales las danzas tradicionales eran folklorizadas y convertidas en espectaculo popular. Aunque ambos casos de folklorizacion se enmarcan en el estudio de los maestros como intelectuales locales, este articulo tambien subraya la importancia de una cultura magisterial en el Peru que, influenciada por el movimiento de la Escuela Nueva, concibio a los maestros como agentes de cambio sociocultural y de nacionalismo.

The undertaken discussion addresses the issues of national identifications manifested by university students. In the pedagogical analysis of this subject matter, some theoretical and methodological conceptualizations have been applied, which refer to: Paweł Boski’s theory of the cultural identity based on values and practices in the conditions of bi – and multicultural socialization, Tadeusz Lewowicki’s theory of identity behaviours, and the theory of intergroup contact and mutual intergroup differentiation, which originate from the hypothesis of contact. What has become the basis for outlining the identification processes taking place in the times of current social changes are the comparative studies conducted in 2018–2019 in the Polish-Czech borderland. The analysis and interpretation of the collected empirical material indicate the occurring changes in the field of criterial and correlative identity attributes of Polish and Czech students. They are determined by other factors than family culturalization and socialization, as well as by the assimilation processes that have taken place (in various extents and scopes) in the Polish-Czech borderland.

Recently, Europe is witnessing a transformation in the political system, concerning right-wing populist movements, around the claim that a massive influx of migrants within its territorial borders undermines the sovereignty of the nation-state. This transformation has led to issues of economic inequalities, loss of cultural identity, and influence in voting patterns. Considering the unfolding situations, we ask: What is the effect of educational migration on economic growth and social development before, during, and after the Covid-19 pandemic? How will the current political transformation processes affect educational migrants in the post-Covid-19 pandemic in Europe? Using the systematic review methodology, the authors sort to perform a comprehensive literature search; complete a critical appraisal of the individual studies gathered; and combine the valid studies using appropriate statistical techniques. The research affirmed a case that Education could not ignore politics. We perceive it will shape populist motives on educational migrants in post-pandemic Europe. The authors expectation of future research pays attention to the political transformation process and how anti-immigration discourse will exercise control over educational institutions.

The focus of this paper is the destruction of the University Library in Leuven by the German occupation army in First World War, as well as its restoration in the post-war period.

The article aims to present the cultural potential of Spycimierz and to indicate the possibilities of using it for the development of tourism. Taking into account the resources of the village related to the natural and historical heritage, preserved and cultivated traditions and the involvement of the community of residents, the authors make an attempt to create a tourist product „Spycimierz ‒ a flower village”, complementing and making the current offer of Uniejów and the surrounding area more attractive. The preparation of a tourist product, which is part of this offer, should not only bring the local community certain economic benefits, but also integrate the community additionally, also around activities other than just joint preparation of religious celebrations. One such attempt under the umbrella is the Karuna Doll, made by women using local textiles as a medium of expression of regional craft identities, focusing on creating individual Karuna Dolls as representatives of the craft language of every state. The Karuna Doll is an embodiment of the cultural identity, and an expression of the idea of “going places.” This article focuses on creating a dialogue with the help of interviews and follows a descriptive method to assess the kind of cultural expression this doll is aimed to become, and its impact on the artisan community as a means of storytelling of a cultural identity. The study is an examination of the conversion challenges confronting Akan Christian Royals in Ghana. The Western missionaries and missionary established churches demand that as part of their conversion requirements, Akan Royals must reject and disassociate themselves from the Black Stool, ancestors and all ancestral related activities. The Royals who claim that their families have become Christian royal families insist that authority symbols like the Black Stools and ancestral ceremonies like the Adae do not take the place of the sovereignty of God and the Lordship of Christ in their belief system. Moreover, participation in Palace services prepares them for traditional leadership and does not take them away from their faith in Christ. The traditional leadership institutions and the Royals that welcomed the Western missionaries, provided them with hospitality, security and resources for the missionary work have come to be considered as unchristian and an anathema to the Christian faith. The position of the church has created tensions within Akan Christian Royal and put the genuineness of their conversion in doubt. The study which is qualitative in nature uses both primary and secondary methods in its information gathering. Its findings provide responses to some contemporary tensions in gospel and culture studies in African Christianity. Digital fandom appears as a part of the development of popular culture in today’s digital era. One of the interesting digital fandom activities to be studied is a series of campaign activities, fundraising, and charity projects of the ”ARMY Indonesia Peduli Bencana” by BTS Army Indonesia. This study used qualitative descriptive research and observation, interviews, documentation, and literature study data collection method. Researchers interviewed BTS Army Indonesia fanbase admins and Instagram account followers of @btsarmyina.project involved in the ”ARMY Indonesia Peduli Bencana” project. This study showed that fans reflect the idol and the cultural identity of fan groups in today’s digital era can be seen from digital fandom activities in online media. Fanbase and influencers have the power in moving their followers to be actively involved in social activities carried out on online media: they act as social agents who actively campaign a humanity project as a cultural identity of a fandom adopted from the idol groups’ values. In addition, the convenience of technology is one of the considerations for fans in participating as volunteers and donors in these humanitarian activities. The success of fundraising, charity and the ”ARMY Indonesia Peduli Bencana” campaign manifests online social movement conducted by fandom in the digital era.

Th challenges of the postmodern era also concern the educational system, which in the article is treated in the light of Krzysztof Brozi’s theory – as an element of the cultural system of the rank of cultural imperative. The analysis concerns the relationship between culture and tradition, where tradition is defined as the grammar of culture. The challenges concern above all the revaluations in the tradition, while the tradition itself as a system giving meaning and building meanings is inviolable. The postulates of revaluations concern the appreciation of cultural pluralism and basing the processes of creating cultural identity of individuals on creativity and freedom in the scope of inheritance acts. Central to this arrangement, for socialization processes, is competence in reading cultural artifacts, refelxivity, responsibility and imagination as virtues.

Esh is an emblematic word and sound in global beatboxing culture. It may have developed from the vocal mimicry of a sound of a snare drum or it may have derived from multicultural youth slang in France. What is clear is that esh is now widely recognized and used as a lexicalized sound to humorously index cultural identity alignments, for example taking a stance of affirmative evaluation, greeting and identifying other beatboxers. We show in this article how beatboxers perform, narrativize and mediatize the interactive functions and cultural indexicalities of esh. This enregisterment, we argue, is schizophonic, i.e. esh is indexically anchored in a mimetic shapeshifting between humans and machines.

In this qualitative study, we ask how 40 rural educators of English learners (ELs) culturally position themselves and their students. We obtained data through a cultural autobiography assignment that prompted teachers to describe their interactions and relationships with others. Drawing on both rural and non-rural experiences, teachers established their ability to exercise agency, mediated by individual histories and beliefs and the context of their rural settings. Teachers developed their capacity to reflect on the ways they position themselves toward their ELs, a crucial first step in creating culturally sustaining pedagogy. Implications point to the potential of cultural autobiography as a means to heighten rural teachers’ awareness of how their experiences and interactions nuance their cultural identity. Such reflections can expand notions of culture beyond common social identifiers and enable teachers to forge links with their students that would otherwise not be apparent. We suggest this autobiographical process is particularly important for rural teachers who are new to teaching ELs in their classrooms.

The author analyses the problems of visualisation and marginalisation of female corporeality in developments of Iranian political and cultural identity from the early modernisation project of the 19th century and the radical modernisation of the 1920s – 1970s to the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which changed significantly the vectors and trajectories of the visualisation of the female body in public spaces and the discourse of Iranian culture. The author believes that Iran / Persia in the 19th century belonged to the number of Muslim countries that were under stable European influences. Russia and Great Britain became the main sources of cultural changes. Cultural exchange with these countries stimulated changes in Persian identity. The author analyses the features of corporeality in the visual art of Iran from the Qajars to the Islamic revolution and its mutations during the process of radical Islamisation of the social life inspired by it. The author believes that the early modern project of the Qajars was the first attempt to visualise female corporeality and map in the centre of cultural coordinates which in fact simulated European discourse. The identity project of the Pahlavi period became an attempt to transform and adopt Western concepts to the Iranian national canon. The Islamic Revolution of 1979 marginalised the visual and visible forms of female corporeality, presented earlier in public and cultural spaces. The project of Islamisation inspired subordination of the female body, marginalising attempts to visualise in ways Western intellectuals did it. Modern feminine corporeality in Iranian culture develops as a dichotomy of official religious identity and its secular alternative, represented by the “high” cultural segments of the consumer society. The author analyses how and why Western strategies of visualisation of female corporeality coexist with its religious rejection. It is assumed that the Iranian mass culture assimilated Western practices of visualising femininity, although the official cultural discourse continues to reproduce the canon of the body imagined as predominantly religious construct.

PurposeThis study aims to present the uniqueness of the mountain oasis at the High Atlas (Morocco) and is part of a more extensive study about the landscape, the architecture and the tourist development in the Mgoun Valley. Several natural and anthropogenic factors, such as new environmental conditions and socio-cultural realities, are testing the balance of the system and its adaptive capacity. A sustainable use of water, a key element of the oasis and source of life in the region, and an optimal management of farmland will allow this culture to be perpetuated. The study of the values of this territory and its transformation vectors constitute a first step for valuing this ecosystem and being able to establish management and conservation policies.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on the fieldwork carried out over six campaigns, between September 2011 and January 2020, when interviews to the local population and graphic and photographic records of the Aït Mrau oasis were carried out. The work started from the literature review and the study of the origin of the settlement, analyzing the transformation processes, both in the cultivated plots and in the built habitat, where the urban evolution of the settlements and the characteristics of the architecture have been analyzed.FindingsThe study has revealed the existence of social, environmental and economic imbalances that affect the status of the oasis, the landscape and the architecture of the study area. The research has characterized the habitat and has identified those elements that must be preserved to guarantee the permanence of the heritage values in a way that the future development of the region was not conditioned.Originality/valueThe research delves into the study of a case that is paradigmatic in the context of the Moroccan High Atlas, since it shows the dynamics of transformation of a region directly affected by the climate change and by the abandonment of the traditional habitats.

The purpose of this study was to begin to define pedagogical theory and practice in the field of dance/movement therapy (DMT). Fourteen DMT educators from American dance therapy association approved programs participated in the study, taking part in individual semi-structured interviews through a phenomenological lens. The participants had taught in the DMT field for at least five years and at most 44 years. Utilizing grounded theory methods, two focus groups were also conducted in which six DMT educators discussed initial qualitative themes from the individual interviews. Through an engaged process, participants were able to participate in the further defining of the study’s themes. Data were analyzed using grounded theory methods of initial and focused coding. The researcher also used member checking, peer review, and a personal research journal to name her own reflexive position within the emerging data. The researcher’s findings centered around six qualitative themes. These themes named the importance of the DMT student’s development of self-awareness including body identity, cultural identity, and professional identity all housed within the experience of embodied learning. Findings also named the importance of educator transparency and modeling in the classroom to create space for student exploration. Recommendations from the study aimed towards creating more opportunities for educators to collaborate and communicate across the field with the goal of creating best practices for DMT education. Also recommendation for DMT educators centered around clarity of expectations in the embodied self-reflective learning process.

Metaphor is not only a linguistic and rhetorical phenomenon, but also an important cognitive and thinking mode, which plays an important role in the formation of human conceptual system. Conceptual metaphor theory holds that metaphor is the foundation of human conceptual system and the essence of metaphor is the mental mapping from source domain to target domain on the basis of similarities. In recent years, more and more metaphorical expressions can be found in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speeches, which have attracted wide attention of the researchers. This paper aims at exploring the effectiveness of Xi Jinping’s metaphorical discourse from the perspective of cross-cultural communication. The study shows that the use of metaphor in political discourse helps to bring about novelty, break cultural barriers, enhance cultural identity, so as to enhance cross-cultural understanding and promote the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication. Conceptual metaphor provides an effective perspective for the study of political discourse, and also provides a new perspective for constructing China’s communication discourse system to the foreign countries in the world.

Ethiopia since 1991 G.C has been adopting democracy and federalism as constitutional frameworks of the state. The core objective to maintain the two political cultures is the presence of multiple cultural identities within the state and the actual need for an intersubjective discussion on the public sphere. As per the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia citizens of Ethiopia have the democratic rights of Thoughts, Opinion and Expression (Art. 29), so in social media it is natural to expect that individuals talk on the different affairs of the state ‘freely’. Basically the social media is serving as an instrument in maintaining discursive talk among individuals. However, it has been also producing considerable social turmoil across the world. The same is what is encountering in Ethiopia today; on the one hand, social media as a communication platform allows people to communicate effectively with sharing alternative views, attitudes and forming democratic consensus on the social anomalies and responses, and on the other hand, the media is the sphere of communicative maladjustment where misunderstanding, extremism and miscommunication is producing. The idea of the research has emerged, and it focuses on designing modern and innovative textiles inspired by Saudi traditional symbols with the aim of attracting adolescents and linking them to their cultures, as well as reviving these symbols in a way that can cope with the fast developments in cultures and trends. This is attributed to the cognitive awareness of the importance of traditional symbols for continuous communication between various generations. In addition, we are now living in the heyday and revival of the fashion world under fast developments in this world and the run for coping with it. Therefore, the research seeks to present a contemporary formulation of Saudi traditional symbols appropriate to the category of adolescents by using the technology of digital design as researchers attempt to design textile fabrics by using decorative units inspired by the symbols of traditional architecture designed with innovative ways that offer a contemporary formulation of Saudi traditional symbols with the use of the technologies of digital design. The aim is to develop awareness of the importance of traditional symbols and employ them in a creative manner that attracts the adolescents' category and boosts their affiliation to their cultural identity in order to confirm the continuity of communication and affiliation in society across generations. Objectives: This study has been carried out to: explore the youths’ knowledge of traditional symbols and identify their link to the national identity, form decorative units inspired by the symbols of traditional architecture, design textiles by using decorative units based on the sample's trends, and measure the sample's acceptance of suggested designs. Method: The research adopted the analytical method with application. It included the analysis and formation of Saudi traditional symbols, in addition to studying the sample's opinions in respect to the designs of textiles inspired by Saudi traditional symbols. sample: The research was applied to a sample of adolescents - males and females – of 15-18 years of age. Tools: Two questionnaires were designed: the first is exploratory to measure the extent of the sample's acceptance of the idea of designing fashion and textiles stimulated by Saudi traditional symbols. The sample was distributed to 250 people of the category of adolescents. The second questionnaire was for measuring the sample's satisfaction of the designs of textiles stimulated by traditional symbols. Final designs of textiles were shown and distributed to 250 adolescents. Results: In this research, the practical experiment is based on the analysis, structure and repetition of Saudi traditional symbols, inspired by Saudi architecture with all its details of doors, windows and archaeological drawings on walls and the symbols of "Al-Qatt Al-Assiri"( a national costume) to use them in the "digital design program: Illustrator" to attempt formulating, treating and producing them in different designs, taking into consideration the design's basics and elements with textile designs. Two strategics of design structure were used. They were: overlapping and repetition. Following the distribution of measurement survey of satisfaction of the target category concerning modern textile designs, the questionnaire results were analyzed based on 3 main axes: the general look of the design, creative ideas, and the appropriateness of the design to the target category. These results are summed up as follows: The possibility of creating numerous decorative designs that are characterized by modernity and originality through the analysis of traditional symbols. This is in conformity with the study of (Al-Eissa, 2019) which emphasizes the richness of Saudi art with the values of linear rhythm that allows the artist or designer to derive inspiration from it in order to realize the aesthetic dimension. This also agrees with the study of (Zalatt, 2013) who asserts that Saudi and Egyptian popular art is rich with various popular decorations that enrich the design of fashion. There is also an agreement with the study of (Khessaifan, 2012) who emphasizes the polishing up of the popular heritage values to introduce its symbols to the front of creative imagination to make options at hand for creative people that represent their artistic heritage with the colors of art and literature. Here comes the role of fashion and textile design in rooting the national identity and maintaining it through making designs of symbols and traditional decorations. The study results of (Nabawi, 2018) and (Abdul Azeem, 2015) agree together, who confirm the need to contribute to the rooting process witnessed in the Arab world, and to protect popular symbols from disappearance and extinction since the Arab popular heritage has a positive effective role in consolidating our national identity. This is in conformity with the main target of this research: to depart from the familiar design systems in textile designs through overlapping and repetition. This agrees with the study of (Al-Shaimi and Taha, 2011), which asserts that preparing decorative designs by depending on repetition types and design basics leads to obtaining several unprecedented artistic and aesthetic values of these designs which enrich the field of designing.

Смена исторических эпох вносят ряд значительных изменений во все сферы жизни страны, что приводит к трансформационным процессам во всех аспектах жизни японцев, оказывая абсолютно противоположные по значимости эффекты на самоидентичность нации. Исторические изменения Японии четко отразились в сфере традиционной культуры, т.к. сопровождались глобальными сдвигами в сознании японского общества. Однако вопрос сосуществования традиционной и современной идентичности Японии остается фундаментальной проблемой самой Японии. Объективность изложения материала на занятиях, посвященных формированию особенностей японской идентичности, дает возможность начинающим историкам, культурологам, регионоведам, переводчикам и др. изучить особенности национального менталитета современного японского народа., The article highlights a relevant topic of forming Japanese identity from the point of view of the cultural and historical approach in classes on linguo-culturology, history, regional studies, intercultural communication, translation studies. Changes of historical eras introduces a number of significant changes in all spheres of the country’s life, which leads to transformational processes in all aspects of the life of the Japanese, having absolutely opposite effects on the nation’s self-identity. Historical changes in Japan are clearly reflected in the sphere of traditional culture, as they are accompanied by global shifts in the consciousness of the Japanese society. However, the question of the coexistence of Japan’s traditional and modern identity remains a fundamental problem for Japan itself. The objectivity of the presentation of the material in the classes concerning the formation of features of Japanese identity makes it possible for historians, culturologists, regional studies, translators, etc. to study features of the national mentality of the modern Japanese people.

"Surschyk" ist eine in der Ukraine weit verbreitete Mischsprache aus Ukrainisch und Russisch, die sowohl im internationalen wissenschaftlichen Bereich als auch in der ukrainischen Öffentlichkeit seit jeher für Diskussionen sorgt. Dabei erzeugt Surschyk ein breites, teils kontroverses Spektrum von Meinungen und Gefühlen. Die Bedeutung und die Rolle des Surschyk können vor dem Hintergrund der ukrainischen Sprachpolitik der letzten Jahre und vor dem Hintergrund der drastischen soziopolitischen Veränderungen durch Russlands Angriffskrieg eine Neubewertung erfahren. Im Zusammenhang mit der gegenwärtigen ukrainischen Sprachensituation und der sprachlichen Identität der ukrainischen Bevölkerung könnte Surschyk, insbesondere der sog. Neo-Surschyk, den gesellschaftlichen Übergang zum Ukrainischen beschleunigen.

The practices of intangible cultural heritage are central to the cultural heritage of humanity, which comprises practices from a plethora of different cultures as well as monuments listed as world cultural heritage. These oeuvres and practices play an important role in the cultural identity of human beings. They are an expression of cultural diversity; they can promote inter-human processes of mediation and initiate educational development on many levels that conveys cultural heritage to the next generation. Engaging with these practices under the conditions of globalisation permits us to make important experiences of heterogeneity and otherness. The importance of the monuments listed by UNESCO as world cultural heritage for the cultural self-understanding of man is undisputed. By contrast, the role of the practices of intangible cultural heritage is subject to more controversial debate. This is all the more surprising given that the monuments have arisen out of man’s intangible cultural practices. In the context of the growing influence in modern societies of individualisation and personal autonomy, we are at times confronted with the view that many practices of intangible cultural heritage have become superfluous and could be replaced by other practices. Just like in the old days, however, communal life is impossible without the practices of intangible cultural heritage. They are historical and cultural products, and in studying them, the cultural determination of the phenomena themselves and the culturally determined character of the research perspectives brought to them come to be superimposed upon one another. This article in turn discusses seven aspects highlighting the specific character and relevance of practices of intangible cultural heritage: the human body as medium, practices of communication and interaction, mimetic learning and practical knowledge, the performativity of cultural practices, central structural and functional elements, difference and otherness, and inter-cultural learning.
