Fluorescent lights are typically used as light source in indoor horticultural production, including micropropagation. However, light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been recently used for plant growth under controlled environment. Major advantage of LEDs is wavelength specificity, that allows to adequately adjust the spectra according to plant needs. The possibility of using LED as primary light source for the micropropagation of Pyrus communis L. has been investigated in this work. It was proceeded to the optimization of a protocol of micropropagation using a LED lamp as the primary light source inside of the growth chamber with specific wavelengths, to reduce energy consumption and increase the quality of the micro propagated plants. Explants were maintained in a growth chamber and exposed to three different continuous spectrum LED lamps (AP67, NS1, G2) as a primary light source and fluorescent lamps (control) for 4 weeks. At the end of four weeks period, it was proceeded to the morphometric and biochemical analysis. Shoot and leaf growths were more influenced by LED lamps as compared to fluorescent lamps (control) in both cultivars. The results showed that the shoots of William and San Giovanni cultivars showed significant differences in morphological and physiological traits, as well as in chlorophyll, carotenoid, and MDA contents. Highest number of neo-formed shoots and nodes were observed in the plantlets of cv William under AP67 LED followed by NS1 and G2 LED lights respectively as compared to the white light (control), whereas same trend was observed in cv San Giovanni under AP67 LED, but it showed higher shoots and node numbers under control LED lamps as compared to both NS1 and G2. The photosynthetic pigments were significantly decreased in leaves of both cultivars when grown under LEDs as compared to the control fluorescent lamps. Moreover, the AP67 LED light had also significant effects on the protein and MDA contents in the leaves of both cultivars in comparison to all other treatments. This work underlines the importance of the modulation of light sources in relation with different species and varieties, allowing optimizing the proliferation phase and the efficiency of Pyrus communis L. micropropagation protocol. Moreover, this protocol can be improved with further studies to examine the response of the plantlets to the ex-vitro acclimatization because the possibility of using LED light for the micropropagation of pear can be considered as a valuable alternative for its ecologically sustainable production.

In the new introducing almond areas, it is necessary to test the more promising almond cultivar and rootstock combinations able to guarantee the best agronomic performances according to the specific pedoclimatic conditions. With this aim, two almond trials have been established in an experimental farm located in the Latium region (Italy). The first trial (A) focused on the phenological, and agronomical influences induced by the clonal rootstock ‘GF677’ on the grafted cultivars ‘Tuono’, ‘Supernova’ and ‘Genco’, in comparison to those induced by peach seedling rootstocks, in order to identify the best grafting combination for developing “high density” plantings in this new growing area. The second trial (B) tested the phenological and agronomical influences induced by three different clonal rootstocks (‘GF677’, ‘Rootpac® 20’ and ‘Rootpac® R’), on the Spanish cultivar ‘Guara’ to identify suitable dwarfing rootstocks for “super high density” plantings in the same environment. Flowering and ripening calendars of the trial A highlighted as the medium-late flowering cultivars ‘Genco’, ‘Supernova’ and ‘Tuono’ could be subject to moderate risk of cold damages. The clonal rootstock ‘GF677’ seems to anticipate flowering and vegetative bud break by a few days in ‘Tuono’ when compared to the same cultivar grafted on peach seedling rootstocks. Furthermore, the yield per plant was always higher in plants grafted on ‘GF677’. The observations carried out in trial B highlighted as the flowering of cultivar ‘Guara’ were affected by the rootstock, with ‘Rootpac® 20’, which postponed its full bloom of about one week when compared to other rootstocks, whereas ‘GF677’ imposed more vigor to the cultivar than ‘Rootpac® 20’ and ‘Rootpac® R’.

Background: The symptomatology in Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is complex and it should be considered in accordance with a biopsychosocial model. Objectives: To evaluate the multidimensional aspects of pain with a complete battery of tests and to analyse its relationship with potential predictors such as mood disorders, sleep and quality of life. BackgroundThe relationship between hypertension (HTN) and chronic pain is still a matter of debate, and its prevalence in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) has never been evaluated. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of HTN in women with BMS and to evaluate its relationship with potential predictors such as risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, pain, and mental health status analyzing differences with healthy women.MethodsIn total, 250 women with BMS (WBMS) were prospectively recruited and compared with an equal number of healthy women (HW) matched for age. Education, body mass index, smoke and alcohol consumption, intensity and quality of pain, and psychological profile were further investigated to identify the potential predictors of HTN. Specifically, pain assessment [the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ)] and psychological assessment [Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and Anxiety (HAM-D and HAM-A), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)] was carried out for the participants.ResultsHTN was found in 128 (51.2%) WBMS and 76 (30.4%) HW (p < 0.001**). The scores of the NRS, SF-MPQ, HAM-D, HAM-A, and PSQI were statistically significantly higher in the WBMS than in the HW (p < 0.001**). A strongly linear correlation between HTN and employment status, systemic diseases, and education level (p < 0.001**) was found in WBMS, while a strong correlation between HTN and employment status, hypercholesterolemia, systemic diseases, and drug consumption was found in HW (p < 0.001**). No statistically significant correlation was found between HTN and pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances.ConclusionThese results suggest that WBMS showed a higher prevalence of HTN compared with controls. Unemployed WBMS with lower education and other systemic comorbidities are at an increased risk of developing HTN. HTN is associated with alteration in the vascular structure and function of the brain, and these processes accelerate brain aging, which contributes to a reduction in intracortical connectivity, thus affecting the modulatory system of control of pain in patients with BMS, independently of their mental health assessment. Predictors that may underlie this association remain unclear, taking into account the differences found in HW, and should be further elucidated.

Academic Health Centers (AHCs) have an enormous impact on health, society, and national competitiveness. They have a threefold strategic mission and heterogeneous models of governance. Our aim is to investigate how different AHC configurations are associated with research performance. The method we adopted follows two steps. First, we identify organizational configurations through cluster analysis of nine variables. Second, we correlate these configurations to bibliometric measures of research outputs. Findings show that AHCs, that are specialty-focused and not mainly involved in educational activities are more productive and have more research impact than fully integrated and affiliated AHCs. Those AHCs also share secondary contextual features.

The Random Forest (RF) model consists of an ensemble classifier that produces many decision trees through the use of a randomly selected subset of samples and training variables. The RF model has assumed importance within the scientific community thanks to its performance. The accuracy of its classifications and prediction has allowed the use of RF in several research domains, which have benefited from it. The present study aims to provide a preliminary review of the whole sci- entific production characterized by all the publications citing the article ”Random Forest” by Breiman, 2001, in the last 20 years (2001-2021).

BackgroundWhite matter hyperintensities (WMHs) of the brain are observed in normal aging, in various subtypes of dementia and in chronic pain, playing a crucial role in pain processing. The aim of the study has been to assess the WMHs in Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) patients by means of the Age-Related White Matter Changes scale (ARWMCs) and to analyze their predictors.MethodsOne hundred BMS patients were prospectively recruited and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Their ARWMCs scores were compared with those of an equal number of healthy subjects matched for age and sex. Intensity and quality of pain, psychological profile, and blood biomarkers of BMS patients were further investigated to find potential predictors of WMHs. Specifically, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Hamilton rating scale for Depression and Anxiety (HAM-D and HAM-A), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were administered.ResultsThe BMS patients presented statistically significant higher scores on the ARWMCs compared to the controls, especially in the right frontal, left frontal, right parietal-occipital, left parietal-occipital, right temporal and left temporal lobes (p-values: p-values: ConclusionPatients with BMS showed a higher frequency of WMHs of the brain as suggested by the higher ARWCs scores compared with the normal aging of the healthy subjects. These findings could have a role in the pathophysiology of the disease and potentially affect and enhance pain perception.
