Museology is undergoing a sea change in the digital era. Studying new technologies or pioneering experiments on digital art alone is far from enough for us to fully grasp such a revolutionary change. As a matter of fact, the influence of digital technology is so pervasive that it is extended over almost all aspects of the society and even leads to cultural reorientation. To the extend, we can see an accelerating trend towards creating works of art with digital media technology, an innovative tool that also occupies a crucial role in the maintenance, preservation, and display of art institutions’ collections. Against this background, this paper attempts not only to identify the latest development of this trend by case studies, but also to investigate how digital technology helps preserve and perpetuate traditional arts and crafts, so as to provide suggestions on reducing the preservation costs and increasing the perpetuation efficiency. In addition, by reference to the results of the case studies and the analysis of professionals’ experiences, this paper seeks to explore the possibilities of facilitating cultural exchange and interactive communication with digitalized display and innovative transformation. This paper concludes with reflections on some cultural issues concerning the application of digital media technology to museum collection display.

Type I interferons (IFN-α/β) have broad and potent immunoregulatory and antiproliferative activities, which are negatively regulated by Src homology domain 2 containing tyrosine phosphatase-2 (SHP-2). Inhibition of SHP2 by small molecules may be a new strategy to enhance the effcacy of type I IFNs. Using an in vitro screening assay for new inhibitors of SHP2 phosphatase, we found that quercetin was a potent inhibitor of SHP2. Computational modeling showed that quercetin exhibited an orientation favorable to nucleophilic attack in the phosphatase domain of SHP2. Quercetin enhanced the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription proteins 1 (STAT1) and promoted endogenous IFN-α-regulated gene expression. Furthermore, quercetin also sensitized the antiproliferative effect of IFN-α on hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and Huh7 cells. The overexpression of SHP2 attenuated the effect of quercetin on IFN-α-stimulated STAT1 phosphorylation and antiproliferative effect, whereas the inhibition of SHP2 promoted the effect of quercetin on IFN-α-induced STAT1 phosphorylation and antiproliferative effect. The results suggested that quercetin potentiated the inhibitory effect of IFN-α on cancer cell proliferation through activation of JAK/STAT pathway signaling by inhibiting SHP2. Quercetin warrants further investigation as a novel therapeutic method to enhance the efficacy of IFN-α/β.

The vergence-accommodation conflict is a fundamental cause of discomfort in today's Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR). We present a novel software platform and hardware for varifocal head-mounted displays (HMDs) to generate consistent accommodation cues and account for the user's prescription. We investigate multiple varifocal optical systems and propose the world's first varifocal mobile HMD based on Alvarez lenses. We also introduce a varifocal rendering pipeline, which corrects for distortion introduced by the optical focus adjustment, approximates retinal blur, incorporates eye tracking and leverages on rendered content to correct noisy eye tracking results. We demonstrate the platform running in compact VR headsets and present initial results in video pass-through AR.

In this paper, we used the dynamic strain measurement method to measure the top-cutter machine of cotton’s stress under its working state. With sorting out data and analyzing it, we obtained the stress condition of the framing and the working parts. And the measurement result could be used to analyze the axle’s fatigue strength and check whether it was safe or not. It provided integrant basis for the further design of the machine.

Silica aerogel/epoxy composite, a kind of efficient thermal insulation material, was prepared by doping silica aerogel of different sizes into epoxy resin through thermocuring process. The results of thermal experiments showed that silica aerogel/epoxy composite had a lower thermal conductivity (0.105W/(m·k) at 60 wt% silica aerogel) and higher serviceability temperature (Martens heat distortion temperature: 160°C at 20 wt% silica aerogel). In addition, the composite doping larger size (0.2-2mm) of silica aerogel particle had lower thermal conductivity and higher Martens heat distortion temperature. Based on the results of SEM and FT-IR, the thermal transfer model was established. Thermal transfer mechanism and the reasons of higher Martens heat distortion temperature have been discussed respectively.

In this paper, we use huge amount of AIS data collected along the west coast of the Taiwan Island in 2012 to investigate ship domains with more than three different methods/models in three different sea areas. Besides comparing the ways to build distance distribution and to delineate ship domains, a new ship domain model with geospatial context and direct application in marine traffic engineering is proposed.

Multiview reconstruction aims at computing the geometry of a scene observed by a set of cameras. Accurate 3D reconstruction of dynamic scenes is a key component in a large variety of applications ranging from special effects to telepresence and medical imaging. In this paper we propose a method based on Moving Least Squares surfaces which robustly and efficiently reconstructs dynamic scenes captured by a set of hybrid color+depth cameras. Our reconstruction provides spatio temporal consistency and seamlessly fuses color and geometric information. We illustrate our formulation on a variety of real sequences and demonstrate that it favorably compares to state of the art methods.
