Knowledge of oxygen diffusion in garnet is crucial for a correct interpretation of oxygen isotope signatures in natural samples. A series of experiments was undertaken to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in garnet, which remains poorly constrained. The first suite included high-pressure (HP), nominally dry experiments performed in piston-cylinder apparatus at: (1) T = 1050-1600 degrees C and P = 1.5 GPa and (2) T = 1500 degrees C and P = 2.5 GPa using yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG; Y3Al5O12) cubes. Second, HP H2O-saturated experiments were conducted at T = 900 degrees C and P = 1.0-1.5 GPa, wherein YAG crystals were packed into a YAG + Corundum powder, along with O-18-enriched H2O. Third, 1 atm experiments with YAG cubes were performed in a gas-mixing furnace at T = 1500-1600 degrees C under Ar flux. Finally, an experiment at T = 900 degrees C and P = 1.0 GPa was done using a pyrope cube embedded into pyrope powder and O-18-enriched H2O. Experiments using grossular were not successful., Profiles of O-18/(O-18+O-16) in the experimental charges were analyzed with three different secondary ion mass spectrometers (SIMS): sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP II and SI), CAMECA IMS-1280, and NanoSIMS. Considering only the measured length of O-18 diffusion profiles, similar results were obtained for YAG and pyrope annealed at 900 degrees C, suggesting limited effects of chemical composition on oxygen diffusivity. However, in both garnet types, several profiles deviate from the error function geometry, suggesting that the behavior of O in garnet cannot be fully described as simple concentration-independent diffusion, certainly in YAG and likely in natural pyrope as well. The experimental results are better described by invoking O diffusion via two distinct pathways with an inter-site reaction allowing O to move between these pathways. Modeling this process yields two diffusion coefficients (D values) for O, one of which is approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the other. Taken together, Arrhenius relationships are, logDm(2)s(-1) = -7.2(+/- 1.3)+(-321(+/- 32)kJ mol(-1))/2.303RT), for the slow pathway, and, logDm(2)s(-1) = -5.4(+/- 0.7)+(-312(+/- 20)kJ mol(-1)/2.303RT), for the fast pathway. We interpret the two pathways as representing diffusion following vacancy and interstitial mechanisms, respectively. Regardless, our new data suggest that the slow mechanism is prevalent in garnet with natural compositions, and thus is likely to control the retentivity of oxygen isotopic signatures in natural samples., The diffusivity of oxygen is similar to Fe-Mn diffusivity in garnet at 1000-1100 degrees C and Ca diffusivity at 850 degrees C. However, the activation energy for 0 diffusion is larger, leading to lower diffusivities at P-T conditions characterizing crustal metamorphism. Therefore, original O isotopic signatures can be retained in garnets showing major element zoning partially re-equilibrated by diffusion, with the uncertainty caveat of extrapolating the experimental data to lower temperature conditions.

This paper puts forward a perspective or opinion that we can demonstrate Darcy’s law is valid at any scale where fluid can be modelled/analyzed as a continuum. Darcy’s law describes the flow of a fluid through a porous medium by a linear relationship between the flow rate and the pore pressure gradient through the permeability tensor. We show that such a linear relationship can be established at any scale, so long as the permeability tensor is expressed as a function of adequate parameters that describe the pore space geometry, fluid properties and physical phenomena. Analytical models at pore scale provide essential information on the key variables that permeability depends on under different flow regimes. Upscaling techniques based on the Lippman-Schwinger equation, pore network models orEshelby’s homogenization theory make it possible to predict fluid flow beyond the pore scale. One of the key challenges to validate these techniques is to characterize microstructure and measure transport properties at multiple scales. Recent developments in imaging, multi-scale modeling and advanced computing offer new possibilities to address some of these challenges.

Studies on the involvement of intrusive magmatism in hydrocarbon generation within sedimentary basins have gained momentum owing to increasing appraisal of the role that such processes may play in controlling global carbon cycle perturbations, and the exploration potential of the volcanic sedimentary basins. Nevertheless, for many areas the causal link between the intrusions and surrounding hydrocarbon systems remains disputed, encouraging a search for methods that could aid in identifying different hydrocarbon sources. Here, we have performed a multi-proxy geochemical study of the middle Cretaceous methane-seep deposits of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin, an early-stage, peri-cratonic rift marking the Mesozoic opening of the Bay of Biscay. Infilled by a thick sedimentary succession intruded by shallow-level igneous bodies, the basin shares analogies with modern young, sedimented rifts that sustain hydrocarbon seepage. We have applied a novel approach that uses the Nd isotope composition of the seep deposits to constrain the relationship between hydrocarbon seepage and igneous activity, and to explore the general potential of Nd isotopes to trace magmatic-influenced fluids in volcanic sedimentary basins. The Nd isotope data have been combined with rare earth element analyses and carbon and oxygen isotope measurements, providing broad insight into the former composition of the seeping fluids. For three out of four investigated seeps, the Nd isotope ratios observed in authigenic seep carbonates include signatures markedly more radiogenic than that reconstructed for background seawater-derived pore waters. The level of this Nd-143-enrichment varies both between and within individual deposits, reflecting spatial and temporal differences in fluid composition typical of seep-related environments. The radiogenic Nd isotope signals provide evidence of subseafloor interactions between the seeping fluids and mafic igneous materials, supporting the model of an igneous control on the mid-Cretaceous methane expulsion in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin. The thermogenic origin of the methane is in accord with the moderately negative delta C-13 values and paragenetic successions observed in the studied seep carbonates. For a single deposit, its relatively unradiogenic Nd isotope composition can be attributed to the smallest size and shallowest emplacement depth of the underlying intrusion, likely resulting in a short-lived character and limited hydrocarbon-generation potential of the associated contact metamorphism. The study demonstrates that Nd isotope analyses of seep carbonates offer a tool in disentangling methane fluxes from different organic matter alteration pathways for the numerous, both fossil and modern sedimented rifts for which the involvement of various methane sources remains insufficiently understood. An overview of previous researches related to the problem of flow around a bluff-body, using experimental and numerical methods, is presented in the paper. Experimental investigation was performed by a laser doppler anemometer, measuring velocity components of the water flow around a smooth sphere, and a sphere with dimples in square channels. Measurement results in subcritical velocity flow field, velocity fluctuation components, lift, drag and pressure coefficients, and 2-D Reynolds stress at quasi-stationary flow are conducted using 1-D laser doppler anemometer probe. The obtained experimental results are compared with numerical simulations, which are performed using the ANSYS-CFX software. For the numerical simulations of quasi-steady-state flow, k-? turbulent model was used, while for numerical simulation of unsteady fluid-flow and for the comparison of results related to the eddy structures, vortex shedding and Reynolds stresses, detached eddy simulation were used. Since the obtained results of experimental and numerical investigation of flow around smooth sphere and sphere with dimples showed good agreement, the considered flow problem was expanded by introducing the influence of a transverse magnetic field with a slight modification of the electrical conductivity of the working fluid. The other physical properties of the fluid remained the same, which also corresponds to realistically possible physical conditions. Numerical simulations were performed for three different values of Hartmann number and very small values of Reynolds magnetic number (inductionless approximation). Comparisons and analyzes of the results were made for the cases containing a magnetic field and those with an absence of a magnetic field.

Mixing is a basic but challenging step to achieve in high throughput microfluidic applications such as organic synthesis or production of particles. A common approach to improve micromixer performance is to devise a single component that enhances mixing through optimal convection, and then sequence multiple such units back-to-back to enhance overall mixing at the end of the sequence. However, the mixing units are often optimized only for the initial non-mixed fluid composition, which is no longer the input condition for each subsequent unit. Thus, there is no guarantee that simply repeating a single mixing unit will achieve optimally mixed fluid flow at the end of the sequence. In this work, we analyzed sequences of 20 cylindrical obstacles, or pillars, to optimize the mixing in the inertial regime (where mixing is more difficult due to higher Peclet number) by managing their interdependent convection operations on the composition of the fluid. Exploiting a software for microfluidic design optimization called FlowSculpt, we predicted and optimized the interfacial stretching of two co-flowing fluids, neglecting diffusive effects. We were able to quickly design three different optimal pillar sequences through a space of 3220 possible combinations of pillars. As proof of concept, we tested the new passive mixer designs using confocal microscopy and full 3D CFD simulations for high Peclet numbers (Pe ≈ O(105–6)), observing fluid flow shape and mixing index at several cross-sections, reaching mixing efficiencies around 80%. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of the inter-pillar spacing on the most optimal design, quantifying the tradeoff between mixing performance and hydraulic resistance. These micromixer designs and the framework for the design in inertial regimes can be used for various applications, such as lipid nanoparticle fabrication which has been of great importance in vaccine scale up during the pandemic.

Numerical solutions of acoustic wave scattering are often used to describe sound propagation through complex geometries. For cases with flow, various forms of the convected equation have been used. A better alternative that includes vortex-sound interaction is instead to use the linearized and harmonic forms of the unsteady fluid flow governing equations. In this paper, a formulation of the linearized equations that include rotational effects, in an acoustic computation using a rotating frame of reference in a stationary geometry, is presented. We demonstrate that rotational effects can be important, e.g., when computing the transmission loss through high-speed compressors. The implementation of the proposed addition to the existing schemes is both simple and numerically inexpensive. The results are expected to have an impact on the research and development related to noise control of high-performance turbo-machinery, e.g., used in automotive or aviation applications at operating conditions that can be represented by steady background flows.

Solid particulate additives are sometimes used to promote the uniform growth of multiple hydraulic fractures in horizontal oil and gas wells. The principle is that solid particulates block, accumulate, and form larger porous plugging zones preferentially at entrances of fracture taking in the most fluid volume. These porous zones create fluid flow resistance or additional pressure loss; thereby, inhibiting the growth of these dominant fractures and diverting fluid to suppressed fractures. While this technology is promising, governing design parameters and ramifications of placing solids diverters inside the fracture remain unclear. This paper models the propagation of multi-fractures with diverter pressure losses induced by the porous plugging zones. The resulting non-linear hydraulic fracturing problem is solved numerically with an Implicit Level Set Algorithm (ILSA) for each time step and the mechanisms of diversion are illustrated by comparing and contrasting cases with and without particle diverter. In both cases, during the fluid ramp-up period (pumping rate gradually increases from 0 to fracturing rate (QT)), the injection can be equally distributed among fractures before the stress interference affects the fluid allocation (Phase I). Then, stress interference starts to partition more fluid into outer fractures and suppress the growth of the middle fracture (Phase II). Once the perforation friction loss is sufficient to counteract the stress interaction, injection begins to shift to the middle fracture, but still gives a significantly nonuniform fracture growth (Phase III). At this point, solid diverter particles are introduced, leading to three additional phases of growth. Phase IV introduces solid diverters to the treatment at a reduced pumping rate. Particles bridge, accumulate and create porous plugging zones at the flow entrance. A higher pressure drop in outer fractures diverts injection fluids to the middle fracture. Phase V resumes the treatment rate to QT without diverter. The increased pump rate in turn increases the pressure drop in outer fractures and diverts more fluids to the middle fracture. This results in a rapid extension velocity for the middle fracture, enabling it to have the chance to catch up with the longer outer fractures (in Phase VI). This process is controlled by the interplay among stress interference, perforation friction loss, and diverting pressure drop. These simulations demonstrate that a model-based optimization could improve the effectiveness of the diverter technology and promote a uniform multi-fracture growth.

Alignment of arterial endothelial cells with the mean wall shear stress (WSS) vector is the prototypical example of their responsiveness to flow. However, evidence for this behaviour rests on experiments where many WSS metrics had the same orientation or where they were incompletely characterised. In the present study, we tested the phenomenon more rigorously. Aortic endothelial cells were cultured in cylindrical wells on the platform of an orbital shaker. In this system, orientation would differ depending on the WSS metric to which the cells aligned. Variation in flow features and hence in possible orientations was further enhanced by altering the viscosity of the medium. Orientation of endothelial nuclei was compared to WSS characteristics obtained by computational fluid dynamics. At low mean WSS magnitudes, endothelial cells aligned with the modal WSS vector whilst at high mean WSS magnitudes they aligned so as to minimise the shear acting across their long axis (“transverse WSS”). Their failure to align with the mean WSS vector implies that other aspects of endothelial behaviour attributed to this metric require re-examination. The evolution of a mechanism for minimising transverse WSS is consistent with it having detrimental effects on the cells and with its putative role in atherogenesis.

Tectonic faults typically break in a single rupture mode within the range of styles from slow slip to dynamic earthquake failure. However, in increasingly well‐documented instances, the same fault segment fails in both slow and fast modes within a short period, as in the sequences that culminated in the 2011 Mw = 9.0 Tohoku‐Oki, Japan, and 2014 Mw = 8.2 Iquique, Chile, earthquakes. Why slow slip alternates with dynamic rupture in certain regions but not in others is not well understood. Here, we integrate laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the physical conditions leading to cycles where the two rupture styles alternate. We show that a bifurcation takes place near the stability transition with sequences encompassing various rupture modes under constant loading rate. The range of frictional instabilities and slip cycles identified in this study represents important end‐members to understand the interaction of slow and fast slip on the same fault segment. This paper presents image velocimetry measurements on turbulent flows adjacent to a permeable bed made of randomly packed glass particles. For measuring flow velocities inside the bed, the refractive index of the glass particles was matched with that of the fluid. By continuously scanning in the transverse direction, we measured the streamwise and vertical velocity components within a three-dimensional domain (3D2C-PIV), including first- and second-order turbulent statistics. We established how the scanning travel speed is associated with the laser sheet thickness and the space-time velocity fluctuations for collecting reliable measurements. The methodology was applied to free-surface flows over a sloping bed under low relative submergence and supercritical conditions. Space- and time-averaged profiles were obtained in a representative elementary volume as defined by thedouble-averagingprocedure (Nikora et al. in J Hydraulic Eng.127(2):123–133, 2001). A turbulent boundary layer over the rough bed was observed when experiments were run at intermediate Reynolds numbers Re =$$O(1000)$$O(1000). Apart from measuring subsurface velocities, this method shed light on the part played by the rough bed in the overall flow dynamics: the roughness layer was a buffer region within which porosity varied sharply and turbulent stress was rapidly dampened.Graphic abstract

Heat transfer in a partially-filled, rotating inclined pipe with water flowing through it is experimentally investigated. The test section is a 1000 mm long stainless steel pipe with 32.8 mm inner diameter and 1.1 mm wall thickness. The outer wall is painted black to improve its emissivity. The outer wall temperature distribution is captured using a thermal camera. Uniform wall heat flux (1405-10784 W/m(2)), water volumetric flow rate (100-830 ml/min), rotation rate (10-300 RPM) and pipe inclination angle (3 degrees and 6 degrees) are varied to study their influence on the heat transfer coefficient. Local heat transfer coefficient along the length of the partially filled rotating test section is reported. While heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase in wall heat flux, liquid volume flow rate and rotation rate, it decreases with increase in inclination angle. A generalised correlation to predict the average Nusselt number is developed in terms of four dimensionless numbers, viz., the flow Reynolds number to capture the effect of the axial fluid flow, rotation Reynolds number to account for the effect of pipe rotation, flow Froude number to take care of the effect of pipe inclination and dimensionless heat flux to incorporate the effect of wall heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient. This paper is based on a multidisciplinary field and laboratory study of carbonate concretions developed in poorly lithified Quaternary, syn-kinematic sediments along the Quattro Castella Anticline, Northern Apennines, Italy. The studied concretions consist of both tabular (parallel to bedding) and elongate single to coalescent concretionary bodies oriented at different angles to the bedding throughout the exposed stratigraphic succession. The dimensions of the concretions range from a few centimetres for single elongate concretions up to several metres for tabular to coalescent concretions. Field observations and petrophysical data indicate that the concretions developed preferentially in sediments characterized by mean grain sizes of 90–290 μm and a permeability ranging from 7 × 102 to 7 × 104 mD. Carbon and oxygen stable isotope analyses in conjunction with the petrographic investigations indicate that the precipitation of concretionary calcite occurred in a meteoric vadose realm during early eogenesis and subsequently in a meteoric phreatic environment. Diagenetic data and concretion patterns in syn-tectonic sediments suggest they formed during the lateral propagation of the anticline, which, in turn, promoted a change in the local topographic–hydraulic gradient from fold axial parallel to fold orthogonal. The integrated analysis of carbonate concretions provides a useful tool with which to unravel the palaeo-fluid flow history and therefore to predict fluid circulation patterns in folded siliciclastic rocks. In this study, delta winglet-type vortex generators, widely used in conventional macro channels and proven to be effective, are used in microchannels to increase their heat transfer capacities. The effects of vortex generators on heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics are studied numerically for different angles of attack, vortex generator arrangement type, the transverse and longitudinal distance between vortex generators, vortex generator length and height, and different Reynolds numbers. The thermal and hydraulic characteristics are presented as the Nusselt number, the friction factor, and the performance evaluation criteria number (PEC) that takes into account the heat transfer enhancement and the corresponding increase in pressure loss. The variation of Nu/Nu0, f/f0, and PEC are found to be in the range of 1.03–1.87, 1.04–1.8, and 0.92–1.62, respectively. A multi-objective optimization study are performed with the response surface methodology analysis to see how different parameters affect heat transfer and pressure loss and to determine the most optimum design. Besides, local sensitivity analysis study is carried out through the RSM, and water inlet velocity for heat transfer enhancement is found to be the most effective parameter. Among the geometric parameters, vortex generator height is determined as the most effective factor. Finally, practical Nusselt number and friction factor correlations taking many parameters into account are proposed to be able to compare the results of other researchers, and for engineers designing microchannel cooling systems.

WOS: 000454670400024, In the present work, the effect of the dfferent geometric moist objects with straight and reverse semi-circular on the heat and mass transfer enhancement of the jet drying was conducted with a numerical analysis. The drying jet was a laminar 2-D jet stationed at a constant jet distance from the moist object. The diameter of the object, jet distance from the moist object and initial jet height were fixed in all cases. Temperature and mass distributions were obtained inside the object for dfferent jet velocities. A finite volume method was used to solve the governing equations for momentum and energy by using ANSYS Fluent 17.0 software program. Calculations were performed for four dfferent Reynolds numbers, namely, Re = 100, 200, 300, and 400. It was found good agreement with the experimental data available in the literature. The results showed that the geometry of straight semi-circular moist object had better performance of heat and mass transfer than that of the reverse moist object geometry. In addition, increasing Reynolds number showed a positive effect on heat and mass transfer. Locally, jet drying was found to be most effective near the stagnation point on the leading side of the objects.

International audience; In this paper, an enthalpic lattice Boltzmann method formulation for 3D unsteady convection-diffusion heat transfer problems is used to overcome discontinuity issues in heterogeneous media. The new formulation is based on the appearance of a source term added to the collision step. The major achievement of the proposed enthalpic LB formulation is avoiding any interface treatments or geometry considerations even when dealing with complex geometries. The performance of the present method is tested for several three-dimensional convection-diffusion problems. Comparisons are made with the control volume method, and numerical results show excellent agreements.

A fully coupled three-dimensional finite-element model for hydraulic fractures in permeable rocks is presented, and used to investigate the ranges of applicability of the classical analytical solutions that are known to be valid in limiting cases. This model simultaneously accounts for fluid flow within the fracture and rock matrix, poroelastic deformation, propagation of the fractures, and fluid leakage into the rock formation. The model is validated against available asymptotic analytical solutions for penny-shaped fractures, in the viscosity-dominated, toughness-dominated, storage-dominated, and leakoff-dominated regimes. However, for intermediate regimes, these analytical solutions cannot be used to predict the key hydraulic fracturing variables, i.e. injection pressure, fracture aperture, and length. For leakoff-dominated cases in permeable rocks, the asymptotic solutions fail to accurately predict the lower-bound for fracture radius and apertures, and the upper-bound for fracture pressure. This is due to the poroelastic effects in the dilated rock matrix, as well as due to the multi-dimensional flow within matrix, which in many simulation codes is idealised as being one-dimensional, normal to the fracture plane.

Solidification morphology directly impacts the mechanical properties of materials; hence many models of the morphological evolution of dendritic structures have been formulated. However, there is a paucity of validation data for directional solidification models, especially the direct observations of metallic alloys, both for cellular and dendritic structures. In this study, we performed 4D synchrotron X-ray tomographic imaging (three spatial directions plus time), to study the transition from cellular to a columnar dendritic morphology and the subsequent growth of columnar dendrite in a temperature gradient stage. The cellular morphology was found to be highly complex, with frequent lateral bridging. Protrusions growing out of the cellular front with the onset of morphological instabilities were captured, together with the subsequent development of these protrusions into established dendrites. Other mechanisms affecting the solidification microstructure, including dendrite fragmentation/pinch-off were also captured and the quantitative results were compared to proposed mechanisms. The results demonstrate that 4D imaging can provide new data to both inform and validate solidification models.

Tidal heterolithic sandstone reservoirs are heterogeneous at the submeter scale because of the ubiquitous presence of intercalated sandstone and mudstone laminae. Core-plug permeability measurements fail to sample a representative volume of this heterogeneity. Here, we investigate the impact of mudstone drape distribution on the effective permeability of heterolithic, cross-bedded tidal sandstones using three-dimensional, surface-based “minimodels” that capture the geometry of cross beds at an appropriate scale. The impact of seven geometric parameters has been determined: (1) mudstone fraction, (2) sandstone laminae thickness, (3) mudstone drape continuity, (4) toeset dip, (5) climb angle of foreset–toeset surfaces, (6) proportion of foresets to toesets, and (7) trough or tabular geometry of the cross beds. We begin by identifying a representative elementary volume of 1 m3 (∼35 ft3), confirming that the model volume of 9 m3 (∼318 ft3) yields representative permeability values. Effective permeability decreases as the mudstone fraction increases, and it is highly anisotropic: vertical permeability falls to approximately 0.5% of the sandstone permeability at a mudstone fraction of 25%, whereas the horizontal permeability falls to approximately 5% and approximately 50% of the sandstone value in the dip (across mudstone drapes) and strike (parallel to mudstone drapes) directions, respectively. Considerable spread exists around these values, because each parameter investigated can significantly impact effective permeability, with the impact depending upon the flow direction and mudstone fraction. The results yield improved estimates of effective permeability in heterolithic, cross-bedded sandstones, which can be used to populate reservoir-scale model grid blocks using estimates of mudstone fraction and geometrical parameters obtained from core and outcrop-analog data.

Building geometrically realistic representations of geological heterogeneity in reservoir models is a challenging task that is limited by the inflexibility of pre-defined pillar or cornerpoint grids. The surface-based modelling workflow uses grid-free surfaces that allows efficient creation of geological models without the limitations of pre-defined grids. Surface-based reservoir modelling uses a boundary representation approach in which all heterogeneity of interest (structural, stratigraphic, sedimentological, diagenetic) is modelled by its bounding surfaces, independent of any grid. Volumes bounded by these surfaces are internally homogeneous and, thus, no additional facies or petrophysical modelling is performed within these geological domains and no grid or mesh discretisation is needed during modelling. Any heterogeneity to be modelled within such volumes is incorporated by adding surfaces. Surfaces and curves are modelled using a parametric non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) description. These surfaces are efficient to generate and manipulate, and allow fast creation of multiple realisations of geometrically realistic reservoir models. Multiple levels of surface hierarchy are introduced to allow modelling of all features of interest at the required level of detail; surfaces at one hierarchical level are constructed so as to truncate or conform to surfaces of a higher hierarchical level. This procedure requires the joining, terminating and stacking of surfaces to ensure that models contain “watertight” surface-bounded volumes. NURBS curves are used to represent well trajectories accurately, including multi-laterals or side-tracks. Once all surfaces and wells have been generated, they are combined into a reservoir model that takes into account geological relationships between surfaces and preserves realistic geometries.

This study presents the stochastic Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) to assess the uncertainty of flow and conservative transport in 3-D discrete fracture networks (DFNs). The MCS modeling workflow involves a number of developed modules, including a DFN generator, a DFN mesh generator, and a finite element model for solving steady-state flow and conservative transport in 3-D DFN realizations. The verification of the transport model relies on the comparison of transport solutions obtained from HYDROGEOCHEM model and an analytical model. Based on 500 DFN realizations in the MCS, the study assesses the effects of fracture intensities on the variation of equivalent hydraulic conductivity and the exhibited behaviors of concentration breakthrough curves (BTCs) in fractured networks. Results of the MCS show high variations in head and Darcy velocity near the specified head boundaries. There is no clear stationary region obtained for the head variance. However, the transition zones of nonstationarity for x-direction Darcy velocity is obvious, and the length of the transition zone is found to be close to the value of the mean fracture diameter for the DFN realizations. The MCS for DFN transport indicates that a small sampling volume in DFNs can lead to relatively high values of mean BTCs and BTC variations.

A microvalve-based bioprinting system for the manufacturing of high-resolution, multimaterial 3D-structures is reported. Applying a straightforward fluid-dynamics model, the shear stress at the nozzle site can precisely be controlled. Using this system, a broad study on how cell viability and proliferation potential are affected by different levels of shear stress is conducted. Complex, multimaterial 3D structures are printed with high resolution. This work pioneers the investigation of shear stress-induced cell damage in 3D bioprinting and might help to comprehend and improve the outcome of cell-printing studies in the future.

Numerical study is done at various Reynolds numbers (100-2000), for periodically fully developed flow and heat transfer in five geometrically different wavy channels. Time signal analysis is done to distinguish various unsteady flow regimes and a flow regime map is proposed; demarcating steady, two types of periodic as well as quasi-periodic, and chaotic flow regimes. Temporal variation of flow structure and Nusselt number as well as friction factor are presented - in the various unsteady regimes - and discussed for a unified cause-and-effect study. Effect of different flow regimes on the thermal-hydraulic performance of wavy as compared to plane channel is presented. Effect of Prandtl numbers (0.01-100) is also studied.

The early history of polymetamorphic basement gneiss complexes is often difficult to decipher due to overprinting by later deformation and metamorphic events. In this paper we integrate field, petrographic and mineral chemistry data from an Archaean tonalitic gneiss xenolith, hosted within a Palaeoproterozoic mafic dyke in the Lewisian Gneiss Complex of NW Scotland to show how xenoliths in dykes may preserve signatures of early tectonothermal events. The Archaean tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) gneisses of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex are cut by a suite of Palaeoproterozoic ( c . 2400 Ma) mafic dykes, the Scourie Dyke Swarm, and both are deformed by later shear zones developed during the upper greenschist- to lower amphibolite-facies Laxfordian event (1740 – 1670 Ma). Detailed field mapping, petrographic analysis and mineral chemistry reveal that a xenolith of TTG gneiss entrained within a Scourie dyke has been protected from amphibolite-facies recrystallization in a Laxfordian shear zone. Whereas the surrounding TTG gneiss displays pervasive amphibolite-facies retrogression, the xenolith retains a pre-Scourie dyke, clinopyroxene-bearing metamorphic assemblage and gneissic layering. We suggest that retrogressive reaction softening and pre-existing planes of weakness, such as the c . 2490 Ma Inverian fabric and gneiss–dyke contacts, localized strain around but not within the xenolith. Such strain localization could generate preferential flow pathways for fluids, principally along the shear zone, bypassing the xenolith and protecting it from amphibolite-facies retrogression. In basement gneiss complexes where early metamorphic assemblages and fabrics have been fully overprinted by tectonothermal events, our results suggest that country rock xenoliths in mafic dykes could preserve windows into the early evolution of these complex polymetamorphic areas. Unlike forced circulation systems, natural circulation systems need to be started from the state of zero flow. Literature study shows that under low flow conditions, the velocity field near the wall is significantly modified by secondary convection currents particularly during diabatic conditions. In view of this, the applicability of conventional forced convection wall constitutive laws to these systems has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. First the applicability of conventional wall constitutive laws derived from steady state forced convection experiments is examined. Next, the results of experimental investigations carried out in a rectangular natural circulation loop are presented. Velocity, turbulent intensity, static pressure and temperature measurements over the flat plate and blocked surfaces were investigated in a low speed wind tunnel in the presence of free stream velocity and block height. The experiments were carried out for free stream velocities of 5, 7 and 10 m/s encompassing the transitional region and for block heights of 10, 15 and 20 mm forming the different flow samples. A constant-temperature anemometer, a micro-manometer and copper-constant thermocouples were used for measurements of velocity and turbulent intensity, static pressure and temperature, respectively. The results showed that the flow separations and reattachments occurred on the blocked surfaces which enhanced the average heat transfer up to 1.54, 1.71 and 1.84 fold of the flat plate value at 5 m/s for the rising block height, 1.49, 1.68 and 1.80 at 7 m/s, and 1.44, 1.63 and 1.78 at 10 m/s, respectively.

A numerical scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations in an irregular shaped domain using the nodal integral method (NIM) is developed. A mapping similar to the convection-diffusion article (Part 1) is used for the Navier-Stokes equations using the NIM in an arbitrary-shaped domain. Use of a recently developed pressure correction-based iterative scheme for the NIM ensures that the final solution satisfies the continuity condition. Lid-driven and buoyancy-driven flows in a skewed cavity are used as two test cases for comparison and verification. From the detailed comparative study of the results obtained by the NIM and very-fine-grid results (using finite-volume or similar approaches) of previous studies, it is established that this NIM-based scheme for the Navier-Stokes equation retains its capability to produce accurate results in comparatively much coarser grids, even with nonorthogonal grids

High peak temperature and continuous deposition of electrode droplets in the weld puddle inhibit real-time monitoring of thermal cycles and bead dimensions in gas metal arc welding. A three-dimensional numerical heat transfer model is presented here to compute temperature field and bead dimensions considering a volumetric heat source to account for the transfer of arc energy into the weld pool. The heat source dimensions are analytically estimated as function of welding conditions and original joint geometry. The deposition of electrode material is modeled using deactivation and activation of discrete elements in a presumed V-groove joint geometry. The computed values of bead dimensions and thermal cycles are validated with the corresponding measured results. A comparison of the analytically estimated heat source dimensions and the corresponding numerically computed bead dimensions indicate that the former could rightly serve as the basis for conduction heat transfer based models of gas metal arc welding process.

The normal stiffness of a fracture is a key parameter that controls, for example, rock mass deformability, the change in hydraulic transmissivity due to stress changes, and the speed and attenuation of seismic waves that travel across the fracture. Non-linearity of normal stiffness as a function of stress is often attributed to plastic yield at discrete contacts. Similar surface-altering mechanisms occur due to pressure solution and precipitation over larger timescales. These processes partition the fracture surfaces into a flattened contact region, and a rough free surface that bounds the void space. Under low loads, contact occurs exclusively over the flattened part, leading to rapid, exponential stiffening. At higher loads, contact occurs over the rough surface fraction, leading to the conventional linear increase of stiffness with stress. It follows that a relationship exists between the history of in situ temperature and stress state of a rock fracture, and its subsequent deformation behavior.

A novel numerical scheme is developed for steady-state, 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the nodal integral method (NIM). The NIM-based schemes have been used to solve partial differential equations in different areas of physics and are known to have very high accuracy compared to conventional numerical schemes. The scheme is implemented using a SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations)-like algorithm for pressure and velocity correction instead of solving the exact pressure Poisson equation. To verify the results, two well-known test problems, the lid-driven cavity and natural convection of air in a square cavity, are chosen. For both cases, results are in good agreement with the benchmark solutions even for quite coarse grids.

A pseudospectral matrix-element (PSME) numerical model is described for the simulation of rotating flows in a three-dimensional annular cavity. Temporal discretisation is implemented using a second-order semi-implicit scheme. Modified compressibility is invoked to handle the coupling between velocity and pressure while maintaining the incompressibility constraint. The governing continuity and Navier-Stokes momentum equations and boundary conditions are discretised using Chebyshev and Fourier collocation formulae. The model is validated against numerical results from alternative schemes and experimental data on rotating flows in an annular cavity. A base flow regime and instability patterns are observed, in accordance with other previously published investigations. It is demonstrated that the PSME model provides an accurate representation of rotating flows in an annular cavity.

The present work focuses on the effect of reservoir stratification (reservoir with layers of different permeability) on a water flood (immiscible displacement) process. Two-dimensional experiments have been performed on a visualization cell packed with sand particles of different sizes to form layers of different permeabilities. A total of four sets of experiments have been performed with alternate layers of high and low permeability and with combinations of horizontal and vertical wells. Also, the perforation length of the vertical injection well and its location has been varied in this work. The study shows that during the oil saturation process, the oil phase preferentially flows through the high permeability regions irrespective of its location in the cell, which causes difficulty in establishing uniform oil saturation in the sandpack. However, during the water flooding process, the water phase preferentially flows through the low permeability regions leaving significant regions of high permeability layers unswept due to capillary pressure. It is also found that the perforation length of the 11 vertical injection wells and its position has a negligible effect on the flow pattern.

Biomechanics may be considered as central in the development of bone tissue engineering. The initial mechanical aspects are essential to the outcome of a functional tissue engineering approach; so are aspects of interface micromotion, bone ingrowths inside the scaffold and finally, the mechanical integrity of the scaffold during its degradation. A proposed view is presented herein on how biomechanical aspects can be synthesised and where future developments are needed. In particular, a distinction is made between the mechanical and the mechanotransductional aspects of bone tissue engineering: the former could be related to osteoconduction, while the latter may be correlated to the osteoinductive properties of the scaffold. This distinction allows biomechanicians to follow a strategy in the development of a scaffold having not only mechanical targets but also incorporating some mechanotransduction principles.

The effects of blockage on the hydrodynamic, thermal and mass transfer characteristics of a circular cylinder (CC) and their association with each other are investigated numerically, by considering the influence of blockage (beta=0.333-0.800) on the flow and heat transfer mechanisms in conjunction with moisture diffusivity (D=1 x 10(-8)-1 x 10(-5) m(2)/s) to show how much mass transfer behavior and phenomena are affected. As some comprehensive ANSYS-CFX runs are performed in the hydrodynamic and thermal fields around the CC, the moisture distributions within the CC are evaluated by Alternating Direction implicit method. It is determined that blockage causes thinner hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers, rises the frictional and thermal activities, and shifts the separation locations (theta(s)) downstream to theta(s)=50.20 degrees, 41.98 degrees and 37.30 degrees for beta=0.333, 0.571 and 0.800. In the complete blockage scenario set, stagnation point heat transfer values are evaluated to be above those of the back-face, signifying the superior heat transfer enhancing capability of the stagnation point momentum activity when compared with the impact of downstream vortex system. The influence of moisture diffusivity on the overall drying times is determined to advance with stronger blockage. As the back face mass transfer coefficients (h(m-bf)) rise with a high beta, the contrary is valid for front face values (h(m-ff)), with the interpreting ratios of (h) over bar (m-bf)/(h) over bar (m)=0.51 and 0.57 and (h) over bar (m-ff)/(h) over bar (m)=1.49 and 1.43 for beta=0.333 and 0.800.

International audience; The present contribution documents NW-SE oriented fault and fracture related dolomites in Aptian-Albian carbonates (Karrantza area; northern Spain). Field observations revealed two main dolomite types, namely massive and zebra dolomite. Texturally, these dolomite types are mostly planar and nonplanar and variably reworked by subsequent alterations, which resulted in neomorphism and recrystallization, cataclastic deformation and calcite filling of dolostones. Petrographic and geochemical studies demonstrate the superposition of different diagenetic events, which were involved in multiphase dolomitization. Several phases of hydrothermal calcite cement pre- and post-date the dolomitisation events. Massive dolomites show overlapping stable isotopic ratios ranging from -16.9 to -8.9 parts per thousand (delta(18)O V-PDB), and -2.6 to +3.1 parts per thousand (delta(13)C V-PDB). Zebra dolomite shows more depleted values of delta(18)O and delta(13)C as compared to massive dolomites (delta(18)O: -18.1 to -15.2 parts per thousand V-PDB and delta(13)C: -8.1 to +1.6 parts per thousand V-PDB). Fluid inclusion analyses show homogenization temperature (Th) values from 120 to 200 degrees C and estimated salinities range between 10 and 24 eq. wt.% NaCl. Both dolomite types are nearly stoichiometric, with CaCO(3) values between 50 and 52 mole% Limestones close to the dolomites show depleted delta(18)O values (similar to those of the dolomites), implying isotopic resetting during dolomitization. Recrystallization appears to have decreased the bulk porosity values in the interlocking nonplanar dolomite (with negligible porosity), while late-stage calcite cements occlude most of the remaining porosity, and make petrophysical measurements difficult to interpret. The possible source of dolomitizing fluids can be deeply buried Triassic evaporitic strata in the intra-platform basin, Keuper salt diapirs and/or Mg-bearing igneous rocks.

A truly meshless method based on the weighted least-squares (WLS) approximation and the method of point collocation is proposed to solve heat conduction problems in heterogeneous media. It is shown that, in the case of strong heterogeneity, accurate and smooth solutions for temperature and heat flux can be obtained by applying the WLS approximation in each homogeneous domain and using a double-stage WLS approximation technique together with a proper neighbor selection criterion at each interface.

An accurate estimation of the temperature field in weld pool and its surrounding area is important for a priori determination of the weld-pool dimensions and the weld thermal cycles. A finite element-based three-dimensional (3-D) quasi-steady heat-transfer model is developed in the present work to compute temperature field in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The numerical model considers temperature-dependent material properties and latent heat of melting and solidification. A novelty of the numerical model is that the welding heat source is considered in the form of an adaptive volumetric heat source that confirms to the size and the shape of the weld pool. The need to predefine the dimensions of the volumetric heat source is thus overcome. The numerical model is further integrated with a parent-centric recombination (PCX)-operated generalized generation gap (G3) model-based genetic algorithm to identify the magnitudes of process efficiency and arc radius that are usually unknown but required for the accurate estimation of the net heat input into the workpiece. The complete numerical model and the genetic algorithm-based optimization code are developed indigenously using an Intel Fortran Compiler. The integrated model is validated further with a number of experimentally measured weld dimensions in GTA-welded samples in stainless steels.

During fusion welding, the presence of sulfur in steel often affects heat and fluid flow in the weld pool and its geometry. While the role of sulfur during welding of stainless steel plates with the same sulfur content is well understood, welding of stainless steel plates containing different concentrations of sulfur has not yet received proper attention. Here we report an experimental and modeling investigation of gas tungsten arc butt welding of stainless steel plates containing different sulfur concentrations. The main variables studied were sulfur concentrations in the two plates, welding current and welding speed. The results show significant shift of the fusion zone toward the low sulfur steel. The asymmetric fusion zone profile with respect to the original joint interface could be quantitatively explained through numerical modeling of heat transfer and fluid flow considering a bead shift observed experimentally. Recent field observations have identified the widespread occurrence of fluid seepage through the eastern Mediterranean Sea floor in association with mud volcanism or along deep faults. Gas hydrates and methane seeps are frequently found in cold seep areas and were anticipated targets of the MEDINAUT/MEDINETH initiatives. The study presented herein has utilized a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating observations and sampling of visually selected sites by the manned submersible Nautile and by ship-based sediment coring and geophysical surveys. The study focuses on the biogeochemical and ecological processes and conditions related to methane seepage, especially the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), associated with ascending fluids on Kazan mud volcano in the eastern Mediterranean. Sampling of adjacent box cores for studies on the microbiology, biomarkers, pore water and solid phase geochemistry allowed us to integrate different biogeochemical data within a spatially highly heterogeneous system. Geophysical results clearly indicate the spatial heterogeneity of mud volcano environments. Results from pore water geochemistry and modeling efforts indicate that the rate of AOM is similar to 6 mol m(-2) year(-1), which is lower than at active seep sites associated with conditions of focused flow, but greater than diffusion-dominated sites. Furthermore, under the non-focused flow conditions at Kazan mud volcano advective flow velocities are of the order of a few centimeters per year and gas hydrate formation is predicted to occur at a sediment depth of about 2 m and below. The methane flux through these sediments supports a large and diverse community of micro- and macrobiota, as demonstrated by carbon isotopic measurements on bulk organic matter, authigenic carbonates, specific biomarker compounds, and macrofaunal tissues. Because the AOM community appears to be able to completely oxidize methane at the rate it is seeping through the sediments, ultimate sinks for methane in this environment are authigenic carbonates and biomass. Significant differences in organic geochemical data between this site and those of other cold seep environments, even within the eastern Mediterranean mud volcanoes, indicate that the microbiological communities carrying out AOM varies depending on specific conditions such as methane flux and salinity. A non-intrusive model reduction computational method using hypersurfaces representation has been developed for reservoir simulation and further applied to 3D fluvial channel problems in this work. This is achieved by a combination of a radial basis function (RBF) interpolation and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. The advantage of the method is that it is generic and non-intrusive, that is, it does not require modifications to the original complex source code, for example, a 3D unstructured mesh control volume finite element (CVFEM) reservoir model used here. The capability of this non-intrusive reduced order model (NIROM) based on hypersurfaces representation has been numerically illustrated in a horizontally layered porous media case, and then further applied to a 3D complex fluvial channel case. By comparing the results of the NIROM against the solutions obtained from the high fidelity full model, it is shown that this NIROM results in a large reduction in the CPU computation cost while much of the details are captured. The reduction from three‐ to two‐dimensional analysis of the permeability of a fractured rock mass introduces errors in both the magnitude and direction of principal permeabilities. This error is numerically quantified for porous rock by comparing the equivalent permeability of three‐dimensional fracture networks with the values computed on arbitrarily extracted planar trace maps. A method to compute the full permeability tensor of three‐dimensional discrete fracture and matrix models is described. The method is based on the element‐wise averaging of pressure and flux, obtained from a finite element solution to the Laplace problem, and is validated against analytical expressions for periodic anisotropic porous media. For isotropic networks of power law size‐distributed fractures with length‐correlated aperture, two‐dimensional cut planes are shown to underestimate the magnitude of permeability by up to 3 orders of magnitude near the percolation threshold, approaching an average factor of deviation of 3 with increasing fracture density. At low‐fracture densities, percolation may occur in three dimensions but not in any of the two‐dimensional cut planes. Anisotropy of the equivalent permeability tensor varies accordingly and is more pronounced in two‐dimensional extractions. These results confirm that two‐dimensional analysis cannot be directly used as an approximation of three‐dimensional equivalent permeability. However, an alternative expression of the excluded area relates trace map fracture density to an equivalent three‐dimensional fracture density, yielding comparable minimum and maximum permeability. This formulation can be used to approximate three‐dimensional flow properties in cases where only two‐dimensional analysis is available.

In this work, various three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds were produced via micro-stereolithography (µ-SLA) and 3D printing (3DP) techniques. This work demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of these two different rapid prototyping methods for production of bone scaffolds. Compared to 3DP, SLA provides for smaller feature production with better dimensional resolution and accuracy. The permeability of these structures was evaluated experimentally and via numerical simulation utilizing a newly derived Kozeny–Carman based equation for intrinsic permeability. Both experimental and simulation studies took account of porosity percentage, pore size, and pore geometry. Porosity content was varied from 30% to 70%, pore size from 0.34 mm to 3 mm, and pore geometries of cubic and hexagonal closed packed were examined. Two different fluid viscosity levels of 1 mPa·s and 3.6 mPa·s were used. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that permeability increased when larger pore size, increased fluid viscosity, and higher percentage porosity were utilized, with highest to lowest degree of significance following the same order. Higher viscosity was found to result in permeabilities 2.2 to 3.3 times higher than for water. This latter result was found to be independent of pore morphology type. As well as demonstrating method for determining design parameters most beneficial for scaffold structure design, the results also illustrate how the variations in patient's blood viscosity can be extremely important in allowing for permeability through the bone and scaffold structures.

A magnetohydrodynamic model of internal convection of a molten Co-Cu droplet processed by the ground-based electromagnetic levitation (EML) was developed. For the calculation of the electromagnetic field generated by the copper coils, the simplified Maxwell’s equations were solved. The calculated Lorentz force per volume was used as a momentum source in the Navier–Stokes equations, which were solved by using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package. The RNG k-e model was adopted for the prediction of turbulent flow. For the validation of the developed model, a Co16Cu84 sample was tested using the EML facility in the German Aerospace Center, Cologne, Germany. The sample was subjected to a full melt cycle, during which the surface of the sample was captured by a high-speed camera. With a sufficient undercooling, the liquid phase separation occurred and the Co-rich liquid phase particles could be observed as they were floating on the surface along streamlines. The convection velocity was estimated by the combination of the displacement of the Co-rich particles and the temporal resolution of the high-speed camera. Both the numerical and experimental results showed an excellent agreement in the convection velocity on the surface.

We investigate nanoflows through dilute disordered media by means of joint lattice Boltzmann (LB) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations -- when the size of the obstacles is comparable to the size of the flowing particles -- for randomly located spheres and for a correlated particle-gel. In both cases at sufficiently low solid fraction, $�� 0.01$, MD shows that molecular size effects lead to a decrease of the permeability, as compared to the Navier-Stokes predictions. In this paper, the measurement of the heat transfer coefficient in rarefied gases is presented; these are among the first heat transfer measurements in the slip flow regime. The experimental setup is validated by comparing friction factor in the slip regime and heat transfer coefficient in the continuum regime. Experimental results suggest that the Nusselt number is a function of Reynolds and Knudsen numbers in the slip flow regime. The measured values for Nusselt numbers are smaller than that predicted by theoretical or simulation results, and can become a few orders of magnitude smaller than the theoretical values in the continuum regime. The results are repeatable and expected to be useful for further experimentation and modeling of flow in the slip and transition regimes.

The distribution of vestured pits in angiosperms is briefly reviewed. In some major clades, the character is of constant occurrence and thus very conservative; in others, it is more variable and apparently subject to both parallel origins and reversible losses. There is a striking correlation between the type of vessel perforation plate and vestured pits. Virtually all taxa with vestured pits have simple perforation plates. This correlation, together with contrasting ecological trends for scalariform perforation plates and vestured pits, has inspired functional hypotheses that vestured pits contribute to hydraulic safety. Whereas scalariform perforations may be instrumental in reducing the effects of freezing-induced embolisms in temperate to boreal and alpine regions, vestured pits seem to be a good candidate to facilitate embolism reversal in xeric and warmer regions with high transpiration rates. The presence of highly lignified structures within the pit chamber may influence hydraulic resistance, decrease vulnerability to cavitation, or help to repair embolism by compartmentalizing or affecting the contact angle of the convex air-water interface within intervessel pits. ispartof: International journal of plant sciences vol:164 issue:3 pages:405-413 status: published

We demonstrate a rapid generation of twin opposing microvortices (TOMVs) induced by non-uniform alternating current (AC) electric fields together with a laser beam on a patterned pair of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. A fast and strong jet flow region between twin microvortices is also generated. Its pattern and direction, such as whether it is symmetric or asymmetric, are controlled mainly by the location of a single laser spot relative to the ITO electrodes. With two laser beams, two separate flows are superposed to give a new one. In situ generation and control of the TOMV flow are tested in suspensions of fluorescent polystyrene particles, as well as in milk emulsions. This technique has great potential for dynamically manipulating micro-fluid flows, functioning as a micro-pump or mixer.
