The authors have examined the alterations in the coagulation pathway of plasma filtered through a polyester filter coated by a hydrophilic polymer. The activation of the coagulation pathway was evaluated by measuring prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, coagulation factors and fibrinopeptide A. The results obtained demonstrate that the examined filter does not induce significative activation of the coagulation pathway.

Among natural hazards, mud volcanoes can damage property and infrastructures and affect hillslope evolution at different spatial and temporal scales. The results of 10-year-long multidisciplinary investigations performed on a Roman-age archaeological site, La Rovina di Montegibbio, are presented, showing a peculiar example of mutual interplay between human settlement and geological forcing in the mud-volcanic environment. The site (350 m a.s.l.) lies at the termination of the upper Secchia River catchment, near the town of Sassuolo (Modena Province). Here, a 4-km-long mud volcano belt borders the Apennines chain front, comprising one of the most prominent mud volcanoes of Italy ( Salsa di Montegibbio), and the still-active chain hinge tectonics gives origin to gas and oil seeps. Based on geological, geoarchaeological, palaeobotanical, geochemical, geophysical records and analytical data, we unravel the onset, the evolution and the abandonment of the settlement in relation to the existence of a previously unknown mud volcano, belonging to the larger Montegibbio mud volcano system. The damages affecting the Roman-age buildings record the ground deformations in the context of mud volcano tectonics. In particular, the pattern of faults set buried under the archaeological site is shown and compared with that of the main mud volcano conduit. At least two Roman-age eruptive episodes have been recorded, whose ejected muds are geochemically characterized. The first recorded eruption must be regarded as the reason for the initial location and function of the sacred ancient settlement. The final site abandonment was because of subsequent severe ground deformations affecting the hillslope as a consequence of mud volcano activity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the in situ characterization of organic matter (OM) within soil macroaggregates, and to assess the relationships between OM characteristics and macroaggregate size indicating different OM stabilization mechanisms. Optical micro-morphological investigations, coupled to SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscopy and energy X-ray spectroscopy) technique, were carried out on thin sections of 1–4 and 0.25–1 mm soil aggregates (coarse and fine macroaggregates, respectively) from 0 to 20 cm soil layer corresponding to A horizon of four different sites in which soil structure were not disturbed by tillage. The intraggregate porosity, measured by image analysis of four different size classes (200 µm), showed that fine macroaggregates were significantly less porous (3.70–6.71% of total porosity) and had higher presence of the finest pore class (

Chestnut plantations are worldwide distributed and they are often subjected to intensive management practices such as the removal of the organic residues from the soil surface. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of such practices on soil properties at different depths and on nutrient contents in chestnut leaves. To reach our goal, 6 pits down to 30 cm soil depth were dug in European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) stands where the organic residues such as burrs, leaves and pruned materials are yearly removed (REM), and 9 pits in stands where the organic residues are chopped and left on soil surface (CONS). Both practices began about 30 years ago. The nutrient contents in leaves were assessed on chestnut trees close to each pit. Our findings showed a more intense soil development in CONS than in REM. At soil surface, CONS had thicker mineral horizon than in REM probably due to the protection acted by the organic residues against erosion. In subsoil, organic residues conservation promoted the organic C (soil organic C, water–extractable organic C, fulvic–like C and soil organic C stock) accumulation which further promoted horizon development. Since the role of soil organic matter (SOM) as source of nutrients, the subsoil of CONS study sites had a greater stock of Ca, P and S and a higher exchangeable Ca content than REM. Furthermore, the higher SOM and nutrient contents in CONS subsoil compared to REM promoted the microbial respiration. The organic residues conservation effects on the surface soil horizon properties were, instead, negligible. Despite the generally better soil conditions in CONS than in REM, no differences were observed for the leaf nutrient contents likely due to the chestnut trees adaptability also to the scarcely fertile soils. Overall, our findings highlighted the importance of organic residues conservation for the improvement in deeper soil horizons of the chemical and biological fertility in chestnut plantations. Furthermore, this research pointed out to pay more attention on subsoil since it is a good indicator of the changes caused by external factors.

Technosols are soils developed on non-traditional substrates and containing large quantities of materials mostly due to intensive human industrial activity, such as artefacts. The increasing number of sites affected by Technosols and their impact on the environment as growing media for plants or as source of pollutants require an understanding of their functioning and evolution, above all the knowledge on the transport of toxic substances from contaminated technogenic soils to groundwater. A case study on properties, remediation and evaluation of Technosols made up by vitrified fly ash and glass–ceramics in Italy was carried out. Original technogenic soils, classified as Spolic Technosols (ecotoxic), were pedotechnically in situ remediated by adding smectitic marlstone and Ca(OH)2. Chemical analysis on samples from piezometers showed the presence of harmful heavy metals in groundwater. By means of boreholes and soil profiles the new soils generated, after remediation, were physically and chemically characterized and classified as Spolic Technosols (calcaric). Analysis on soil toxicity and leaching tests showed the effectiveness of the remediation and the mobility reduction of some potentially harmful elements according to the environmental Italian regulation.

Fragipan is a widely distributed subsoil horizon that induces severe limitations to plant growth and land use, mainly because of its high bulk density. In this work, we evaluated the pore-size distribution through the analysis of the cumulative curve of intruded mercury volume in some soils with fragipan horizons. This approach provides information also about the arrangement of particles, thus we compared the results obtained for fragipan and nonfragipan horizons to relate porosity and particle arrangement with the specific physical properties of fragipans. The total volume of intruded mercury did not allow to discriminate between fragipan and nonfragipan horizons. However, from the variation of the pore volume as a function of the radius, two modal classes of pores were found, coarse and fine, respectively. The fine-pore class arose from the arrangement of clay particles, and its volume was correlated to clay contents (r = 0.787) and to clay packing density (r = –0.621). The clay fractions in fragipans were less densely packed than in the other B horizons, even if they had similar clay contents. The coarser-pore modal class is known to arise from the interactions between clay, silt, and sand particles, and its volume was different among horizons. Fragipan had a low volume of this modal pore class. In addition, a packing density for the coarser phase of 0.74, corresponding to a rhombohedral packing, was found only in fragipans. Thus, the low permeability and high bulk density of fragipans are linked to specific arrangements of the particles: an open packing of the clay phase is associated to an extremely dense packing of silt and sand. This combination is not present in any other soil horizon.

In bisequal soils a complex combination of pedogenic processes has occurred and the minerals that arise from a specific soil forming process may have been modified by other processes. In this work we investigated the mineralogical composition of the clay fraction and related it to pedogenic processes in three soils of the Russian Taiga. The soils showed evidences of clay translocation, podzolisation, and gleying with different intensities and combinations. Clay translocation was present in all profiles, but better expressed in Profile 2. Evidences of podzolisation were found in Profiles 2 and 3, but in this latter hydromorphic processes have also occurred. In Profile 1 almost permanent water stagnation has lead to the development of a thick sphagnum cover. In all profiles, during the formation of the Alfisol sequa, the transformation of illite into vermiculite or smectite has occurred through the formation of mixed-layered minerals while the pH favoured Al intercalation in the interlayer. When podzolisation started, the presence of HIV/HIS in the E horizon was no longer favoured, because of Al complexation by organic acids, but in the Bs horizons Al-intercalation in the interlayers continued, thus prolonging a mineralogical process that has started during the previous pedogenic phase. The formation of swelling minerals was moderate and related to the cheluviation phase of podzolisation. We found swelling mixed layer minerals only in the surface horizons of Profile 1 and 3, where the vegetation cover was favourable to the production of aggressive organic acids and thus Al may be removed also from the structural sites of phyllosilicates. The reducing conditions acted upon soil minerals, but affected directly only Fe oxi(hydr)oxides. The dissolution of the protective Fe-films from mineral surfaces has, however, favoured the physical disintegration of feldspar grains where the waterlogging conditions were almost permanent.

Variations in soil-water and mineralogical composition of clay particles are important factors governing the formation and stabilization of soil aggregates. We evaluated the effects of these factors on aggregate genesis in two soils with different mineralogical compositions. One developed from chlorite-rich schists and the other from serpentinite, but they have similar organic matter and Fe oxides contents. The

Several mechanisms are responsible of the destabilization of soil aggregates in water: slaking, swelling, and dispersion of the clay and mechanical breakdown by abrasion. The aggregate resistance differs in relation to the dominant disruptive phenomenon, and by applying different methods to assess aggregate stability, a specific physical susceptibility of different horizons may be evidenced. Therefore, we evaluated the relative importance of the mechanisms of breakdown in some Typic Fragiudalfs, taking into account the specific horizon characteristics, to understand if the fragipan brittleness is related to a specific mechanism, and how the soil properties affect the resistance to fast wetting. The standard wet sieving test, which evaluates all destabilization mechanisms together, indicated a clear role of soil organic matter in protecting the aggregates, with greater losses in the deeper horizons (about 70%), but did not allow us to discriminate between fragipans and other horizons. When the losses caused by water abrasion were separated from the breakdown due to wetting phase using a kinetic approach, a high breakdown caused by fast wetting was found in deep horizons, but still no difference between fragipan and non-fragipans were visible, even though fragipan clods are known to be particularly sensitive to fast wetting. By excluding the effect of organic matter and prewetting the samples with ethanol, differences between these horizons appeared within the water saturation phase and fragipans and non-fragipans were found to be sensitive to different mechanisms. In fragipans, the relative percentage of slaking was higher, always above 30%, whereas for non-fragipans clay dispersion and swelling weighted more heavily. The complexity of the clay fraction did not allow us to relate the mineralogy to swelling or dispersion, but slaking was instead clearly related to clay arrangement and the consequent porosity characteristics (r 2 = 0.62), and not to clay content only.

A parametric study, regarding the influence of the quadratic pressure term, which is often neglected in the literature, on the stochastic alongwind response of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure subjected to wind action, is presented. The results are reported in terms of percentages of difference in the evaluation of the response, by considering and neglecting the quadratic pressure term. The changing parameters considered are: the terrain drag coefficient, the structure height, the structure natural radian frequency, the structure damping coefficient and the wind reference mean velocity. The response stochastic analysis has been carried out in the time domain, by means of the moments equations method, once a filter equation approximating the fluctuating wind velocity has been introduced. An approach that is able to obtain the stochastic characteristics in terms of, stochastic momen.ts of a SDOF system excited by loads due to a fluid-structure mteraction is presented. In This approach the fluid horizontal velocity is considered as a filtered white noise, and the actual load expression is replaced by a Thirddegree polynomial of this velocity. The tools needed to p.romptly obtain the filters parameters and the equations governing the response moments are also presented; in particular, if the structure is sufficiently stiff, It is shown that these equations do not need any closure scheme III order to be solved. © ASCE.

Preliminary studies of in vitro cytostatic activity on less polar fraction of the MeOH extract of the plant Euphorbia nicaeensis All., carried out on KB cells, have evinced a relatively low ability of extract to inhibit cell growth. Successive, five glucocerebrosides were isolated from the cerebroside molecular species obtained from this extract using normal and reversed phase column 'flash-chromatography'. The structures of these cerebrosides were determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences. Mass spectrometry of dimethyl disulfide derivatives was useful for the determination of the double-bond positions in the long-chain bases.

This work presents a complete set of corollaries derived from the classical reciprocal theorems in the linear theory of elasticity. It is shown that the strain energy required to produce a given effect (reactive generalised force or displacement) at a certain position A of a linearly elastic body or structure by means of the application of the corresponding dual action (imposed generalised displacement or force, respectively) at another position B, attains its minimum when A coincides with B. This fact turns out to be a simple and general property of any linearly elastic model and from a qualitative point of view it can be related to the well-known local perturbation principle of Boussinesq. The assertions made can prove themselves useful in the interpretation of terms arising in several engineering problems, like boundary elements analyses or structural monitoring procedures.
