En esta investigación, se aborda la desintegración familiar, problema que siempre ha estado presente y en la actualidad va en aumento dentro de los hogares ecuatorianos. El principal objetivo de este estudio es analizar los factores que conllevan a desintegrar una familia y cómo esto repercute durante el desarrollo integral de los niños en la primera infancia. Este trabajo es de diseño no experimental, cuali-cuantitativo, de corte transversal y de tipo explicativo. Como método empírico se aplicó el test APGAR familiar a padres de familia de la Unidad Educativa Fiscal en la ciudad de Portoviejo, para detectar la funcionalidad e integración familiar dentro de estos sistemas. En los resultados, se encuentra que las familias funcionales e integradas predominan en este estudio, lo cual refleja que existe buena comunicación entre sus integrantes, apoyo emocional y fortaleza ante un problema. En conclusión, la familia es la base fundamental para el crecimiento y desarrollo de los niños en todos sus aspectos. Objetivos: Determinar el riesgo y dinámica familiar en familias con menores de 5 años de una zona vulnerable de Comas. Materiales y métodos: Este estudio fue de enfoque cuantitativo, con diseño metodológico descriptivo-transversal. La población estuvo conformada por 112 familias. Se empleó los instrumentos de Riesgo Familiar Total (RFT 5:33) conformado por 33 ítems y 5 dimensiones, y el APGAR familiar representado por 5 elementos. Resultados: En cuanto al riesgo familiar, predomino familias amenazadas con 58% (n=65). En cuanto a las dimensiones, en condiciones psicoactivas predomino familias amenazadas en un 100% (n=112), en servicios y prácticas de salud familias amenazadas en un 83% (n=93), en condiciones de vivienda y vecindario familias amenazadas en un 75% (n=84), en situación socioeconómica familias amenazadas en un 89,3% (n=100), en manejo de menores familias amenazadas en un 72,3% (n=81). En relación a la funcionalidad familiar, predomino disfunción familiar moderada en un 50,9% (n=57). En sus dimensiones, en adaptación predominio disfunción familiar severa en un 58,9% (n=66), en participación disfunción familiar severa en un 35,7% (n=40), en ganancia disfunción familiar severa en un 54,5% (n=61), en afecto leve con 64,3% (n=72), en recursos buena función familiar y disfunción familiar moderada con 36,6%. En ambas variables existieron buena correlación. Conclusiones: En cuanto al riesgo familiar, predomino familias amenazadas y en sus dimensiones en todas tuvo mayor predominio familias amenazadas. En relación a funcionalidad familiar, predomino moderada y en las dimensiones tuvo mayor frecuencia disfunción familiar severa.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre resiliencia y funcionalidad familiar en estudiantes de secundaria de una Institución Educativa Publica de Lima – Perú.Métodos: Se trató de un estudio de diseño no experimental, tipo descriptivocorrelacional y de corte transversal. La población total fue de 300 estudiantes de cuarto y quinto de secundaria. La técnica fue la encuesta y los instrumentos el test de resiliencia creado por Wagnild & Young y el Apgar Familiar elaborado en 1978por el Dr. Gabriel Smilkstein (Universidad de Washington).Resultados: El 51% de adolescentes presenta resiliencia media alta, el 17% resiliencia media y 2.5% baja. El 39% presenta disfuncionalidad familiar leve, 16.6% disfuncionalidad moderada y15.8% disfuncionalidad severa. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la interacción social de niños y niñas con el Trastorno del Espectro Autista, la “Fundación un lugar para tus sueños” de la ciudad de Portoviejo-Manabí, Ecuador. El enfoque de esta investigación es cualitativo, a través del método deductivo inductivo establece una relación entre ambas variables, apoyado en el método bibliográfico y estadístico, se aplicó el instrumento del APGAR familiar y un cuestionario para evaluar la interacción social de los/las niños/as participantes. Como resultado se obtuvo que la mayor parte de las familias tienen una función familiar normal y la interacción social de sus hijos oscila entre Buena y Regular, indicando que los niveles de funcionalidad familiar y la interacción social de los/las niños/as con TEA está íntimamente relacionado, pues el rol que cumplen los miembros de la familia es indispensables para la adaptación social del niño/a.

Background: Family instability and partner conflicts are reportedly common in serodiscordant relationships. To date, the family adaptability, partnership, growth, affection and resolve (Family APGAR), a standardised tool for assessing family function, has not been used in any published literature involving this peculiar group. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of family functionality and its association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serodiscordance. Setting: The study was undertaken at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. Method: This was a cross-sectional study. A systematic sampling method was used to select HIV-positive clients whose partners were seropositive (concordant) or seronegative (discordant). A standardised format was used to extract relevant data. All data were analysed using STATA ® (version 14). Results were reported as odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for study and outcome variables. Results: The study recruited 374 respondents, of which 52% (195) were in HIV-discordant relationships. Approximately 68% (254) of the respondents rated their families as functional, 15% (57) rated as moderately dysfunctional and 17% (63) rated as severely dysfunctional. A statistically significant relationship was found between family functionality and gender, as well as between family functionality and HIV status disclosure to the partner. No association was found between the Family APGAR and HIV serodiscordance. Conclusion: Amongst HIV couples, the strongest predictors of family functionality are gender and status disclosure. Healthcare providers should invest efforts into addressing gender-based challenges, utilise the Family APGAR and support disclosure of HIV status, especially amongst discordant couples.

Aim This study aimed to investigate the current situation of the spiritual health of maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients in China and analyse the influencing factors. Methods A total of 418 patients who underwent maintenance haemodialysis in three grade A tertiary hospitals were selected. The influencing factors were evaluated with demographic questionnaire, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Spiritual Well‐Being (FACIT‐Sp‐12), Family APGAR Index, Herth Hope Index (HHI) and Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS). Results Spiritual health was positively correlated with the HHI, Family APGAR and AIS scores. Nationality, HHI score, Family APGAR score and AIS score were independent influencing factors of spiritual health. MHD patients had a moderate level of spiritual health. Nationality, hope, family function and acceptance of illness were significant predictors of spiritual health. Patients who have higher hope levels, better family functioning and better illness acceptance may maintain better spiritual health.

This study aimed to investigate whether children with atopic diseases exhibited different neurodevelopment function from healthy controls and whether their caregivers had differential parental stress. In total, we recruited 109 patients with atopic diseases (mean age 6.8 years, 54.1% male) and 82 healthy children (mean age 6.3 years, 54.9% male). Based on the children’s age, they underwent developmental, cognitive evaluations and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. The parenting stress of children’s caregivers was evaluated using the Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ-12) and Family APGAR. Of the children with atopic diseases, 87.2%, 74.3%, 29.4%, and 8.3% of them had allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria, respectively. None of these conditions were associated with children’s cognitive profiles or ADHD symptoms. However, the caregivers of patients who had asthma suffered from higher CHQ-12 scores than those of patients without asthma. Furthermore, the number of atopic diseases had a dose–response effect on caregivers’ CHQ-12 scores. In conclusion, allergic diseases did not impair the cognitive development of children. However, caregivers of patients with asthma or multiple atopic diseases may suffer a greater mental health burden with regard to caring for their children. Such caregivers may require support to effectively fulfill their parenting roles.

The family is the smallest unit in society consisting of father, mother and child. In a family, there are five functions to be performed, such as affective function and coping, socialization function, reproductive function, the function of the economy, and health care function. There are several factors that can affect the function of the family, including employment, education, and economics. An agitated state of the mother and occurs after delivery characterized by feelings of sadness, crying, fear of taking care of the baby is called postpartum blues. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between family function with postpartum blues in the sub-district Puskesmas Tladan Kawedanan Magetan. The study design used is cross sectional analytic study, which means that the data collection is done in the period. The population in this study are pregnant women primigravida birth day forecast in April. These samples included 30 maternal postpartum with simple random sampling technique. The research instrument used to measure the Family APGAR questionnaire family function and EPDS questionnaire to measure postpartum blues. The measurement results were tested using the chi-square and p values obtained 0,024. P value less than 0.05 so it can be concluded that there is a correlation between family function with postpartum blues in the sub-district Puskesmas Tladan Kawedanan Magetan.

Enquadramento: o Investimento na Vida Pessoal (IVP) pode indicar-nos a valorização e atribuição de objetivos de vida do idoso, em todos os seus atributos e caraterísticas. Objetivo: avaliar o nível e determinantes de IVP percecionado pelos idosos institucionalizados. Metodologia: estudo não experimental, descritivo-correlacionai e quantitativo, realizado numa amostra de 90 idosos institucionalizados da região Centro do País. Foi utilizado um questionário, o índice de Barthel, escala de Apgar Familiar, escala da Espiritualidade, escala de Satisfação com a Vida e escala de Avaliação de Investimento na Vida Pessoal. Resultados: a perceção dos idosos sobre o IVP é para 37,8% elevado, moderado para 30,0% e baixo para 32,2%. Os homens avaliam o investimento de uma forma mais positiva que as mulheres (p =0,047), assim como os idosos com habilitações académicas superiores (p = 0,041) e com maior nível de independência funcional (p = 0,037) Também a família tem um efeito positivo e significativo (p = 0,020) no IVP do idoso, à semelhança da existência de mais esperança (p = 0,002) e maior satisfação com a vida (p = 0,013). Conclusão: os níveis de IVP dos idosos é diferenciados mas maioritariamente positivo e correlaciona-se de forma significativa com diversas variáveis que trabalhadas contribuem para um envelhecimento ativo e com qualidade.

OBJETIVO: identificar os atributos de qualidade de vida no trabalho (QVT), os niveis de satisfacao e a relacao desses indicadores com a funcionalidade familiar de trabalhadores administrativos em uma universidade publica do Estado de Sao Paulo, Brasil. METODO: Pesquisa transversal, de abordagem quantitativa. Os dados foram coletados utilizando formulario de informacoes sociodemograficas, diagnostico de QVT e APGAR familiar. RESULTADOS: Os atributos de QVT mais apontados foram o bom relacionamento com colegas e superior hierarquico, jornada de trabalho, acoes de treinamento e aperfeicoamento e condicoes adequadas do ambiente fisico. Foram relatados altos niveis de satisfacao de QVT e disfuncao familiar moderada em 8% dos entrevistados. Nao observamos associacao entre os niveis de QVT e a funcionalidade familiar. A qualidade do tempo passado com a familia e mais importante que a quantidade de tempo no convivio familiar. CONCLUSOES: Observamos necessidades distintas entre trabalhadores mais novos e mais velhos na instituicao. E necessaria a busca por metodologias e formas de gestao que diminuam os conflitos entre geracoes tao distintas e que valorizem as habilidades de cada uma.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To identify quality of life characteristics at work (QWL), levels of satisfaction and the relationship of these indicators with the family functionality of administrative workers at a public university in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. METHOD: This is a transversal research, with a quantitative approach. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, diagnosis of QWL and family APGAR. RESULTS: Good relationship with peer colleagues and chief of staff, work day, training and professional development and adequate physical environment conditions were among the characteristics of QWL most highly valued. High levels of QWL satisfaction and moderate family dysfunction were reported in 8% among informants. Therefore, there does not seem to be an association between QWL levels and family functionality. The quality of time spent with the family is more important than the amount of time spent in the family. Different needs among younger and older workers in the institution are perceived. It is necessary to find methodologies to reduce conflict between generations and management methods to help them value each other’s abilities.

espanolEl embarazo conlleva cambios fisiologicos y emocionales que pueden afectar a la dinamica familiar. Algunos aspectos psicosociales no favorecen la adaptacion al embarazo, pueden causar cambios emocionales y generar manifestaciones ansiosas y depresivas. Objetivo general. Conocer la relacion del embarazo de alto riesgo con la dinamica familiar y el subsistema conyugal. Material y metodo. Estudio observacional en 30 pacientes embarazadas con riesgo obstetrico alto que se encontraban viviendo con su pareja. Se evaluaron por medio del test APGAR familiar y el subsistema conyugal. Se utilizo estadistica descriptiva para variables demograficas y chi2 para asociacion. Resultados. De acuerdo con la tipologia familiar, 73,3 % nucleares, 66,7 % modernas, 83,3 % integradas, 100 % urbanas y 50 % son empleadas. El 93,3 % de las familias son funcionales (APGAR) y segun el subsistema familiar, 90 % fueron funcionales. No se encontro asociacion estadisticamente significativa entre riesgo obstetrico y APGAR familiar (p=0,121, IC 95 % 0,106-0,118). Tampoco se encontro asociacion estadisticamente significativa entre el riesgo obstetrico y el subsistema conyugal (p=0,475, IC 95 % 0,694-0,712). Conclusion. No se encontro relacion del embarazo de alto riesgo con la dinamica familiar ni con el subsistema conyugal. EnglishPregnancy leads to physiological and emotional changes that can affect family dynamics. Some psychosocial aspects do not favor the adaptation to pregnancy and can cause emotional changes, generating anxious and depressive manifestations. Course objective. To know the relation of the high risk pregnancy with the family dynamics and the marital subsystem. Material and method. Observational study in 30 pregnant patients with high obstetric risk who were living with their partner. They were evaluated by the family APGAR test and the marital subsystem. Descriptive statistics were used for demographic variables and chi2 for association. Results. According to the family typology, 73.3% nuclear, 66.7% modern, 83.3% integrated, 100% urban and 50% are employed. 93.3% of the families are functional (APGAR) and according to the family subsystem, 90% were functional. No significance was found between obstetric risk and family APGAR (p = 0.1.21, 95% CI 0.106-0.118). As between the obstetric risk and the marital subsystem, no significance was found, finding p = 0.475, 95% CI 0.694-0.712. Conclusion. No high-risk pregnancy relationship was found with family dynamics or with the marital subsystem

Objetivo: estimar asociación entre salud familiar, características sociodemográficas y condiciones especiales en pacientes atendidos en una clínica en Cartagena (Colombia). Materiales y métodos: estudio analítico de corte transversal, en 150 pacientes de la Clínica del Adulto Especial, Facultad de Odontología, Universidad de Cartagena, 2011-2015. Se diseñó y aplicó cuestionario para indagar variables sociodemográficas (edad, sexo, escolaridad), prevalencia de condiciones especiales y salud familiar (tipo de familia, presencia de recursos extra familiares [ecomapa] y funcionalidad familiar [APGAR Familiar]). Se realizó estadística descriptiva (frecuencias y porcentajes), estimación de asociaciones a través de OR y regresión logística nominal con intervalos de confianza del 95 %. Resultados: El modelo multivariado que mejor explica la salud familiar en pacientes con condiciones especiales corresponde a: 1) el Vivir en familias no nucleares: Muerte de menor de 5 años en el último año (OR=10,97, IC 95%= 3,34-36,01), consumo de alcohol/drogas (OR= 7,95; IC 95%= 2,54-24,87), cirugías y tratamientos médicos sin resolver (OR= 3,31; IC 95%= 1,01-10,89), 2) Familias sin recursos extrafamiliar: tener más de 60 años (OR= 0,20; IC 95 %:0,090-0,45), cabeza de Familia Desempleado (OR= 7,81; IC 95%= 2,87-21,24) y contar con servicios de salud públicos (OR: 0,18; IC 95 %: 0,06-0,52) y 3) Disfuncionalidad familiar: hospitalización en el último año (OR= 6,28; IC 95%= 1,76-22,38). Conclusiones: Vivir en familia no nuclear, ausencia de recursos extra familiares y disfuncionalidad familiar en personas con condiciones especiales pueden comprometer el pronóstico y manejo de sus enfermedades.

Background We assessed the association of personal factors with Family APGAR not only among the subjects in nonsingle households, but also in single households. Methods We randomly chose 1 000 persons aged from 50 to 89 years in Rumoi City of the west area of Hokkaido as study candidates, and 493 subjects responded to the survey. We compared the group of high Family APGAR (FA) score of more than or equal to seven with the group of low FA score of less than or equal to 6 with regard to health‐related QOL (HRQOL), measured with SF‐8, Index of Social interaction (ISI), and other personal characteristics. Being in the low FA group indicates living with a status of poor family function. Results As a result of the multivariate logistic regression model, living in single households, currently smoking, a low score of mental component summary (MCS) in HRQOL, and a low score of lSI were all significantly associated with being in the low FA group. A low score of MCS was significantly associated with being in the low FA group both in the stratum of nonsingle households, and in the stratum of single households. Conclusions There were three risk factors of low FA. The first is a single household, second is currently smoking in a nonsingle household, and the third is low ISI. Worse mental status is found to be associated with low FA among the subjects not only in nonsingle households, but also in single households.

Family function, which improves individual resilience and strongly link to quality of life (QOL) among the elderly, increases the risk of depression. Because of these demonstrated relationships, it can be hypothesized that both depression and resilience are mediators of the association between family function and QOL.To test this hypothesis, the structural equation model (SEM) constructed by Amos 21.0 was employed to assess the indirect effect of depression (Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS) and resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, CD-RISC) on the relationship between family function (Family APGAR Score, APGAR) and QOL (12-item Short Form health survey, SF-12) in 474 elderly adults from three communities in Guangzhou, China.Correlation matrix showed that depression is significantly negatively correlated with family functioning (r=-0.54, P0.01), resilience (r=-0.46, P0.01) and QOL (r=-0.63, P0.01), while resilience is significantly positively correlated with family functioning (r=0.35, P0.01) and QOL (r=0.40, P0.01). SEM indicated that Family functioning appeared to have significant indirect effects through resilience (β=0.089) and depression (β=0.307; combined β=0.056) on QOL (RThe finding supports the assumption that depression and resilience are consistent intermediary factors of the relationship between family function and QOL among the elderly.

El APGAR Familiar, instrumento utilizado para la evaluación familiar, elaborado con el objetivo de que el médico de familia obtenga información de sus pacientes en relación con la situación funcional de sus familiares. Consta de cinco preguntas, aplicables a los diferentes miembros de la familia y en momentos distintos para mejor percepción de la satisfacción del entrevistado con su vida familiar, además es de utilidad para conocer si la familia representa una respuesta positiva para el paciente o por el contrario, afecta a su enfermedad. Introduction In Colombia, the family APGAR questionnaire is often used to evaluate family function. However, there is no confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to corroborate the proposed one-dimensional structure in Colombian adolescent students. Objective To perform CFA on the APGAR family questionnaire in high-school students of Santa Marta, Colombia. Method A total of 1462 students of tenth and eleventh grade of official and private schools completed the family APGAR questionnaire. Students between 13 and 17 years old (M = 16.0, SD = 0.8) were included, of which 60.3% were female, and 55.3% were tenth grade students. The χ2, RMSEA, CFI, TLI and SMSR were estimated in the CFA. The internal consistency of the dimension was calculated with Cronbach alpha and McDonald omega coefficients. Results In the CFA the indexes were χ2 = 9.11, df = 5, P = 0.105; RMSEA = 0.024 (CI90%, 0.000–0.048), CFI = 0.998, TLI = 0.996, and SMSR = 0.009. Cronbach alpha coefficient was 0.819 and McDonald omega, 0.820. Conclusions The one-dimensional structure of the APGAR family scale is confirmed in high-school students of Santa Marta, Colombia. This questionnaire is reliable and valid for the measurement of family function in school-aged adolescents.

The purpose of the present study was to learn the relationship among satisfaction with life, family care degree, psychological dependency and subjective bias of senior high school student. We are using the Life Satisfaction Scale (LSIB), Family Care Scale (APGAR), Dependent Scale (Dy), Prejudice Scale (Pr), for 300 high school students in the school randomly sampling survey. Life satisfaction was investigated with the APGAR test, psychological dependence, prejudice relationship personality. Through this study, we have drawn the following results: 1) Life satisfaction was significantly positively correlated with the degree of care to the family (r = 0.311, p < 0.01), and psychological dependence (r = -0.399, p < 0.01), subjective bias negative correlation (r = -0.328, p < 0.01). APGAR and dependence (r = -0.147, p < 0.05), biased were negatively correlated (r = -0.134, p < 0.05). Dependence and prejudice were positive correlation (r= 0.661, p < 0.01); 2) as for high school students of different gender within life satisfaction, family care degree, dependency and prejudice score comparison, APGAR t test was significantly (t = -2.38, p < 0.05); 3) by comparison of the scores of different professions, science students life satisfaction was higher than liberal arts students (t = 2.12, p < 0.05); 4) family APGAR and dependence predict life satisfaction (p < 0.01) were greater than the subjective bias (p = 0.177) of forecasts. The role of the family APGAR return was greater than the return action dependent. Based on these results, we have come to the conclusion that the degree of family care and psychological dependence performance effectively predicts life satisfaction. APGAR on life satisfaction was positively predicted. Psychological dependency on life satisfaction was negative prediction.

espanolEl enfoque familiar es la base de la medicina familiar y comunitaria, es la unidad basica, el estudio de la familia puede realizarse partiendo de distintos enfoques, pudiendo seguir criterios biomedica y sociologicos. Se cuenta con tecnicas e instrumentos para el estudio de acontecimientos de situaciones estresantes en la familia. La atencion con enfoque de salud familiar es flexible, dinamica, interactiva, capaz de prever y brindar respuesta oportuna. La familia se enfoca como un sistema, en donde existe subsistemas que interrelacionan entre si. Para el estudio de la familia se usan genograma, APGAR familiar y otros cuestionarios como el GHQ-28, el abordaje de cada familia depende de sus caracteristicas. EnglishThe family approach is the basis of family and community medicine, it is the basic unit, the study of the family can be carried out based on different approaches, being able to follow biomedical and sociological criteria. There are techniques and instruments for studying events of stressful situations in the family. Family health-focused care is flexible, dynamic, interactive, capable of anticipating and providing a timely response. The family is focused as a system, where there are subsystems that interrelate with each other. For the study of the family, a genogram, a family apgar and other questionnaires such as the GHQ-28 are used, the approach of each family depends on its characteristics.

Objective: to check the existence of an association between personality traits of the caregiver of elderly people with dementia and family functionality. Method: cross-sectional study with the participation of 118 caregivers of elderly people with dementia in two geriatric services. The following variables were investigated: family functionality (family APGAR scale); sociodemographic; cognitive impairment of the elderly person (GDS scale); personality traits of the caregiver (NEO-FFI-R inventory); overload (Zarit overload inventory); depressive symptoms (CES-D scale). Beta regression and path modeling were used to check the hypothesis of the influence of these variables on family functionality. Results: Beta regression pointed to a predictive model in which the variables “do not share care”, “cognitive impairment of the elderly person”, “depressive symptoms of the caregiver” and “conscientiousness” have influence on family functionality. Path modeling showed that personality traits of caregivers have a strong influence on overload and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The study contributed to highlighting the importance of enhancing the assistance to the caregiver of the elderly person with dementia. The results point to the need for intervention studies that consider the personality of the caregiver, the family support and the psychological health of the caregiver, aiming at the preparation of specific and more effective protocols.

The aim of the study was to measure whether people at increased risk for eating disorders (EDs) and people without an increased risk of EDs differ from each other in the assessment of family functioning (FF) and self-esteem (SE) dimensions. Moreover, the correlations between FF, EDs, and SE were verified, looking for the mediating role of SE in the context of the FF and EDs. The research was conducted on the group of 160 people aged from 18 to 47 years, including 74 people at increased risk for EDs. We used: The Family APGAR (Adaptability, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve); The SCOFF Questionnaire; The Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory, MSEI. Analyses indicate that the compared groups differ significantly in terms of EDs, assessment of FF, and all components of SE, in such a way that people without an increased risk of EDs are characterized by a more positive assessment of FF and higher SE in all its dimensions. All SE dimensions, except defensive high SE, are mediators in the relationship of FF with EDs. In therapeutic interactions, it is worth focusing on the SE dimensions, as they are one of the mediation elements in the relationship between the assessment of FF and EDs.

Aim Family function is an essential factor affecting older adults' health. However, there has been no appropriate method to assess the family function of most older adults with fragility or poor health status. The present study aimed to explore the differences and relevance of family function estimated by home care nurses and the older adults, and to determine if nurses could represent older adults to provide the estimation. Methods Study participants were 50 older adults who were aged older 65 years and were taken care of at home by well-trained nurses. The present study used the Family APGAR as the questionnaire. We compared the results evaluated by the older adults and their home care nurses. The results included the level of dysfunction and the total scores of the questionnaire. The paired t-test and McNemar–Bowker test were used for the analysis. Results Family function could be leveled as “good,” “moderate dysfunction” and “severe dysfunction” according to the scores. The family function levels estimated by nurses showed no significant differences to the patients' condition (P = 0.123 > 0.05). Comparing the total scores of the older adults with those of their own home care nurses, the results showed a moderate to nearly high correlation (R = 0.689/P

Antecedente: Pese a que la OMS recomienda que “Si se empezase a amamantar a cada nino en la primera hora tras su nacimiento, dandole solo leche materna durante los primeros seis meses de vida y siguiendo dandole el pecho hasta los dos anos, cada ano se salvarian unas 800 000 vidas infantiles”, en la Reunion Mundial de Consenso de la Organizacion Mundial de la Salud sobre los Indicadores de Alimentacion del Lactante y del Nino Pequeno de 2007, se demostro que en la realidad es cada vez menor el porcentaje de ninos que reciben pecho exclusivo y reconoce que “El apoyo a la madre es esencial”. Objetivo: Determinar los factores que favorecen la lactancia materna exclusiva en madres adolescentes. Metodo: Estudio observacional analitico de corte transversal; la poblacion de estudio fueron 158 madres adolescentes en etapa de lactancia que asistieron a los servicios de la Empresa Social del Estado Instituto de Salud de Bucaramanga, (ESE ISABU) durante el segundo semestre de 2011 y primer semestre del 2012. Objective Family and caregiver distress can impair optimal care and support of the patients, particularly those suffering from stigmatizing diseases requiring life-long treatment such as HIV/AIDS. This study aimed at determining the relationship between family dysfunction and depression among HIV/AIDS patients. Methods This was a hospital based, cross sectional, descriptive study, of 300 adult HIV/AIDS patients attending the HIV clinic. Depression was assessed using the PHQ-9 scale. A family APGAR questionnaire was then used to determine, the prevalence of self-reported family dysfunction, among the depressed patients. Results The prevalence of depression among the HIV/AID patient was 56.7% with the following level of depression viz., minimal 109 (64%), mild 44 (25.9%), moderate 10 (5.9%), moderately severe 3 (1.8%), and 4 (2.4%), severely depressed. Moreover, there was severe family dysfunction in 75 (44.1%) and moderate dysfunction in 48 (28.2%) of the respondents. Only 47 (27.6%) had highly functional family. Conclusion Depression is very prevalent among HIV/AID patient. They have low family APGAR score, because family dysfunction is a common problem among them. There was a significant association between depression and family dysfunction. This may partly be responsible for non-disclosure of their HIV/AID status to their family members.

This study presents an analysis of a potential association between family functionality and the variables of gender, length of institutionalization, family composition, depressive symptoms, and cognitive disorders in elderly individuals living in Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCF) in a city in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study with a descriptive-correlational design. A total of 107 institutionalized elderly individuals were interviewed. Data were analyzed through raw and adjusted Logistic Regression. The results indicate that most elderly individuals experience family dysfunction, 57% present a high level of family dysfunction, 21% present moderate family dysfunction and 22% present good family functionality. There was a statistical association between the Family APGAR and the variables of length of institutionalization, depressive symptoms, family composition and cognitive disorders.

Relocation stress could occur in relocated older adults. The signs and symptoms often manifest as non-specific complaints. This study aimed to elicit the lived experience of relocated older adults in a residential home in Surabaya. Individual interviews were conducted following consent being given, in addition to MMSE, GDS and Family APGAR score tests. Seven residents aged between 60 to 80 years old voluntarily participated in this study. A phenomenological approach was used to develop the narrative findings following verbatim transcription and the work by Colaizzi (1976). Five themes emerged from the study: moving was a hard decision, feeling lonely in the first months, trying to accept changes and the feeling of being health-supported. These themes reflected that moving to a residential home was hard despite the voluntary decision. Eventually, they adapt by virtue of support from the other residents, their visiting families and the health staff. The study examined the protectors of post-disaster adaption in indigenous adolescent survivors of a devastating typhoon in Taiwan. In total, 152 adolescent participants were recruited from two mountainous districts that were the most severely destroyed by Typhoon Morakot (August 7, 2009). A self-reported questionnaire with five major sections including: (1) sociodemographic information and previous traumatic experience; (2) the adolescent-family inventory of life events and changes; (3) the Family APGAR Index; (4) the Family Satisfaction Scale; and (5) the WHO Quality of Life Scale was administered to the adolescents. Multiple regression was performed to analyze the collected data. Gender, religion, and perceptions of overall life changes, family functioning, and satisfaction with family were found to significantly affected post-disaster life adaptation in indigenous adolescents. The findings suggest that clinicians should be more sensitive to gender differences, strengthen adolescents’ beliefs and family systems, and minimize transitional post-disaster experience in order to assist indigenous survivors with coping with disasters.

Objetivos: Este trabalho pretende avaliar determinantes sociodemográficos, laborais e patológicos de ausência laboral prolongada. Tipo de estudo: Caso-controlo prospetivo Local: Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos População: Foram considerados casos indivíduos entre os 18 e os 65 anos que se encontravam com Certificado de Incapacidade Temporária (CIT) há pelo menos 30 dias por doença natural. Os controlos foram selecionados aleatoriamente, emparelhados por médico de família. Métodos: Recolheu-se informação relativa a variáveis sociodemográficas e patológicas (cirurgia recente, patologia psiquiátrica, patologia osteoarticular e doença oncológica) e aplicaram-se duas escalas (APGAR Familiar e a Escala de Satisfação no Trabalho). Calcularam-se Odds Ratio (OR) ajustados para género, idade e escolaridade e respetivos Intervalos de Confiança (IC) a 95% para estimar a associação entre estes determinantes e possibilidade de estar com CIT prolongado. Resultados: Durante o período de estudo foi emitido CIT prolongado a 76 indivíduos, para os quais foram aleatoriamente selecionados 76 controlos. Cerca de 56% dos casos e 62% dos controlos eram homens, sem diferenças significativas entre géneros. A idade média dos casos foi superior à dos controlos (50,0 versus 42,5; p < 0,001) e os casos eram em geral menos escolarizados (p < 0,001). Constatou-se que mais casos exerciam profissões de colarinho azul (p = 0,001) e obtiveram pontuações mais baixas no APGAR Familiar (p = 0,008). Verificou-se ainda um aumento da possibilidade de CIT prolongado na presença de patologia osteoarticular (OR 6,14; IC 95% 2,79 - 13,48), oncológica (OR 4,62; IC 95% 1,18 - 18,08) e psiquiátrica (OR 5,21; IC 95% 2,14 - 12,70) e cirurgia recente (OR 14,49; IC 95% 3,83 - 54,80). Conclusões: Este trabalho poderá auxiliar os médicos de família a identificar os indivíduos mais vulneráveis ao absentismo laboral prolongado, para permitir implementação de medidas preventivas custo-efetivas que permitam reduzir o impacto pessoal, familiar e social e os custos que lhe estão associados. Goal: The aim of this study was to evaluate the determinants of long-term absenteeism from work including socio-demographic, work-related and disease-related characteristics. Study design: Prospective case-control study Setting: Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos Study population: Individuals between 18 and 65 years of age were considered cases if they were absent from work for a period longer than 30 consecutive days. For each case, a control was selected randomly from the list of the same family physician. Material and methods: Information was gathered regarding socio-demographic and disease-related characteristics (recent surgery, psychiatric, musculoskeletal and neoplastic disease) of cases and controls. The Family APGAR and the Work Satisfaction Scale were used to evaluate family function and work satisfaction. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for gender, age and education, were computed to estimate the association between these variables and long-term work absenteeism. Results: During the study period, 76 cases were identified and 76 controls were selected. About 56% of cases and 62% of controls were men. This difference was not significant. Mean age was higher among the cases (50.0 versus 42.5; p < 0.001) and cases were less educated (p < 0.001). A higher proportion of cases had blue-collar occupations (p = 0.001) and cases had lower family APGAR scores (p = 0.008). There was higher risk of long-term absenteeism for individuals with musculoskeletal disease (OR 6.14; 95% CI 2.79 - 13.48), neoplastic disease (OR 4.62; 95% CI 1.18 - 18.08), psychiatric disease (OR 5.21; 95% CI 2.14 - 12.70) and recent surgery (OR 14.49; 95% CI 3.83 - 54.80). Conclusion: This study may help clinicians to recognize individuals at higher risk of long-term work absenteeism and enable them to apply cost-effective preventive measures to decrease the health, family and social burdens of this problem.

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el bullying y la relación entre redes de apoyo social y funcionamiento familiar percibido por los adolescentes de una institución educativa. Se propuso un diseño no experimental de tipo descriptivo-correlacional con el que se recogieron datos exclusivamente de Floridablanca, Santander. La población estuvo conformada por 304 estudiantes de los grados sextos, novenos y undécimos de una institución educativa pública; las edades oscilaron entre los 10 a 18 años. Como instrumentos se utilizaron tres cuestionarios: el Cuestionario Paredes Lega y Vernon, (2006) para detección del bullying, el APGAR Familiar para medir el funcionamiento familiar, y el Cuestionario MOS de apoyo social. El análisis de la información se trabajó con el programa estadístico SPSS 17.0. Los resultados evidencian que en la institución educativa se presentan conductas asociadas al fenómeno de bullying (agresión, exclusión, intimidación), el 30,5 % de todos los estudiantes admitió que alguna vez ha agredido de diferentes formas a un compañero o compañera ridiculizándolo, golpeándolo, excluyéndolo o por medio de la amenaza, siendo la más repetitiva la ridiculización con un 44,5 %, los resultados demostraron la presencia de bullying en el 22,8% de los estudiantes evaluados. Finalmente, se concluye en la investigación, la importancia de fortalecer las redes de apoyo dentro del contexto escolar, ya que no está cumpliendo la función de brindar apoyo hacia los jóvenes que presentan estos comportamientos, específicamente los que son agredidos, lo que demuestra la necesidad de hacer más partícipes a los docentes, familiares y pares, en las dinámicas que se gestan al interior de la institución educativa que apunten a la construcción de redes de apoyo sólidas en los estudiantes.

El presente trabajo investigativo tuvo como objetivo describir la asociación entre la funcionalidad familiar, las conductas externalizadas y el rendimiento académico en un grupo de adolescentes de un colegio distrital de la localidad de Usaquén de la ciudad de Bogotá. El estudio fue de corte empírico-analítico de tipo descriptivo y un método de asociación, empleando como instrumentos la lista de chequeo de la conducta infantil de Achenbach y Edelbrock, los tres cuestionarios, el de autorreporte (YSR), el cuestionario de padres (CBCL) y el cuestionario de profesores (TRF), el APGAR familiar y el boletín académico. Los participantes fueron adolescentes entre 12 y 16 años de edad, sus respectivos padres y profesores. Dentro de los resultados encontrados se estableció que la mayoría de los adolescentes reportan una disfunción familiar moderada y un rendimiento académico medio. Igualmente se encontró que la mayoría de ellos no presenta conductas externalizadas aunque hay un porcentaje de ellos que sí las presenta, especialmente según lo reportado por los profesores

Introducción: Bogotá DC. como capital de Colombia es el receptor del mayor flujo migratorio de población desplazada por causa de la violencia, son individuos o grupos familiares con crisis no esperadas, que requieren una atención integral para restituir su bienestar biopsicosocial. Objetivo: caracterizar la funcionalidad, ciclo vital familiar e identificar las redes sociales existentes, por medio de instrumentos de medicina familiar, de una población desplazada por la violencia, en algunas localidades de Bogotá DC. durante el año 2007. Métodos: con la información de las carpetas familiares del convenio de la Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud (FUCS) y ASCOFAME, se realizó un subanálisis de la información en un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, en el cual se describen las características demográficas y la funcionalidad familiar medida por instrumentos debidamente validados (APGAR familiar), así como la valoración de las redes sociales ezistentes en familias desplazadas por la violencia, certificadas por el gobierno de Colombia, en tres localidades de Bogotá DC.: Engativá, Mártires y San Cristóbal. Resultados: se describen las características de 797 familias con 3.817 individuos. La edad promedio fue 22 años (de 17), la mayor proporción de la población proviene de la zona Andina (49,9%) y Caribe (18,9%). El 73,7% de las familias tenían hijos adolescentes y escolares. Con el puntaje de APGAR se encontraron 40,7% familias funcionales, 27% con disfunción familiar leve, 20,8% moderada y 11,7% con disfunción severa. Conclusiones: la mayoría de las familias desplazadas mostraron por medio del APGAR familiar aplicado a un miembro, ser disfuncionales en cualquier grado predominando la disfunción leve. La severa se asocia con desempleo y ausencia de recreación en el núcleo familiar.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo tem por objetivo verificar a influência de fatores sociodemográficos, condições de saúde, capacidade funcional e dinâmica familiar na qualidade de vida de idosos dependentes residentes em domicílio em uma cidade do interior da região do Nordeste. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de uma pesquisa de caráter analítico com delineamento transversal. A amostra deste estudo foi composta por 117 idosos dependentes, cadastrados nas Unidades de Saúde da Família da área de abrangência do bairro do Jequiezinho, no município de Jequié, BA. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados utilizados foram o WHOQOL-OLD, o Índice de Barthel, o Apgar de Família e o levantamento de dados sociodemográficos e condições de saúde. RESULTADOS: Com a aplicação do Teste do qui-quadrado (x²) encontrou-se diferença estatística entre comprometimento da qualidade de vida e da dinâmica familiar, com exceção do domínio autonomia (p = 0,061) da qualidade de vida. CONCLUSÕES: Apenas o comprometimento da dinâmica familiar influencia de maneira negativa a qualidade de vida dos idosos dependentes, uma vez que, quanto mais prejudicada a funcionalidade familiar, pior a qualidade de vida desses.

Objective To examine the relations of sociodemographic factors and infant neurobehaviors to maternal confidence in China. Methods The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, Family APGAR, and Maternal Confidence in Caring for the Newborn scales were administered to 40 healthy, full-term neonates. Results Range and regulation of state, autonomic stability, and reflex cluster scores were positively correlated; the autonomic stability cluster score was negatively correlated with maternal confidence in meeting the infant's social and instrumental needs. Educational level, age, income, satisfaction with family conditions, and infant sex were not associated with maternal confidence. Range of state and autonomic stability cluster scores predicted maternal confidence. Conclusions The infant's abilities to tolerate stimuli, and to be consoled, were associated with maternal confidence. Also, maternal confidence was related to the recognition of infant autonomic cues. Family and sociodemographic variables were not associated with maternal confidence. The sex of the newborn did not affect maternal confidence.

The family is essential to patients with advanced cancer. Family and caregiver distress, however, can impair optimal care and support of the patient. A five-item questionnaire, the Family APGAR Scale, was evaluated to determine family functioning levels of selected patients. The APGAR Scale has five components for measuring family functioning: Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve. Fifty consecutive patients admitted to a palliative medicine inpatient unit were reviewed for a pilot study. Eligibility requirements included admission to the unit for the first time, and the ability to speak English and give informed consent. Fifteen patients and 11 primary care-givers participated. Despite the small sample, some significant family functioning issues were identified. Completing the study later with a larger sample will provide information that will help the multidisciplinary team better meet the needs of both patient and family.

This study aims to assess the interactive effect of marital status and shift work on family function. A population-based sample of 1,438 nurses between the ages of 20–45 yr was recruited from Taiwan during the period from July 2005 to April 2006 using a mailed questionnaire. The self-administered questionnaire contained information about demographic data, work status, shift work schedule, and the Family APGAR (Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve) Scale, to evaluate family function. Compared to day shift nurses, non-night and rotation shift nurses had 1.53- and 1.38-fold (95% CI=1.09–2.14 and 1.01–1.88) risk to have poor family function after adjusting for other covariates. Married nurses, by contrast, had a 0.44-fold (95% CI=0.29–0.66) risk to have poor family function compared to single nurses. In addition, married nurses who worked non-night or rotation shifts had a significantly higher percent of poor family function than those married nurses working day shifts; however, similar results were not replicated in single nurses. We concluded that shift work and marital status could influence family function.

The objective of this Integrative Literature Review was to systematize the knowledge on how the Family APGAR score has been used to identify the functionality of family relationships in the elderly. Method: a was performed of LILACS, MedLine , Pubmed and SciELO databases using the descriptors: “aged”, “aged, 80 and over”, “family relations” and “family”, as they represent the triad elderly-family-family relationships, published in Portuguese, English and Spanish between the year 2000 and 2013. Results: thirteen articles met the inclusion criteria, all of which were evidence of non-experimental studies, descriptive or using a qualitative approach. The analyzed articles described the Family APGAR as an instrument used by a multidisciplinary team to measure family functionality based on the index person. The instrument is of quick application, easy to manage and interpret. Furthermore, it permits identifying family dysfunction of the elderly and caregivers, a condition that contributes to broadening the concept of relationships in the family setting. Objetivo: Determinar los factores que influyen en la práctica de la lactancia materna exclusiva en madres adolescentes. Material y Método: Estudio de corte transversal, con 158 madres adolescentes en etapa de lactancia que asisten a los servicios de primer nivel de atención de Bucaramanga. Se aplicaron dos instrumentos para caracterizar las madres adolescentes y el APGAR familiar para evaluar la funcionalidad familiar. Datos digitados y validados en Epi- Info 6.04d y analizados en Stata 10.1; para analizar las variables continuas, se utilizaron medidas de tendencia central, las variables categóricas fueron expresadas como proporciones. El análisis multivariado se describió mediante razón de prevalencia e intervalo de confianza del 95%. Resultados: Promedio de edad 17.9 años, el 39.4% lactó 6 meses y el 9.8% lactó más de 6 meses; el 89.2% ya habían tenido hijos. Las razones por las cuales no alimenta a su hijo con solo leche materna son: el 9.5% producen poca leche, el 12% el niño se queda con hambre, y el 20.7% otras causas. Durante la lactancia el 82.3% acaricia a su bebé. Las personas que recomiendan la lactancia materna son el 84.3% médico y enfermera, el 63.3% un familiar. Conclusiones: Se precisa del asesoramiento y apoyo familiar y de las instituciones de salud para que el amamantamiento sea una experiencia satisfactoria tanto para la madre adolescente como para el hijo. ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the factors that influences the practice of exclusive breastfeeding in adolescent mothers. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 158 mothers lactating adolescents attending the services of primary care of Bucaramanga- Colombia. The instruments used to characterize adolescent mothers and to evaluate the effectiveness of family functionality the family APGAR. Data entered and validated in EpiInfo 6.04d and analyzed in Stata 10.1, to analyze continuous variables, we used measures of central tendency; categorical variables were expressed as proportions. Multivariate analysis described by prevalence ratio and confidence interval of 95%. Results: mean age 17.9 years, 39.4% six months nursed and nursed 9.8% over 6 months and 89.2% had already had children. The reasons for not feeding her child with only breast milk are: 9.5% produce little milk, 12% child is still hungry, and 20.7% other causes. During lactation the 82.3% caresses her baby. People recommend breastfeeding are the doctor and nurse 84.3%, a relative 63.3% relative. Conclusions: Accurate counseling and family support from the health institutions that will assure breastfeeding as a satisfying experience for both the teenager mother and the child.

Resumen Objetivo: Identificar caracteristicas sociodemograficas, economicas, ocupacionales y de percepcion de salud que expliquen la disfuncionalidad familiar de trabajadores informales “vendedores” del centro de Medellin. Materiales y metodos: Estudio descriptivo transversal con fuentes primarias de informacion, muestra de 170 trabajadores en el ano 2009 con encuesta que incluia el SF-36 y el APGAR familiar. Resultados: El 35% presento riesgo de disfuncion familiar leve o severa, siendo menor la prevalencia para quienes no eran cabeza de familia (RP: 0,59. IC95%:0,38;94) y vendian bebidas-picadura y dulce (RP:0,29. IC-95%: 0,11;0,77), fue mayor para quienes percibian menos ingresos mes (Me: $300.000; Rq: 242,000), tenian menor numero de personas a su cargo (Me:2; Rq: 2) y eran del estrato socioeconomico bajo (RP:2,82. IC-95%:1,40;5,67). Se observaron diferencias para siete de los ocho dominios del SF-36. Conclusiones: Factores laborales y extra laborales en esta poblacion trabajadora aportan a la explicacion de la prevalencia de riesgo de disfuncionalidad familiar, ayudando a configurar su condicion de vulnerabilidad laboral. Abstract Objective: Identify socio-demographic, economic, occupational and health perception characteristics which explain the dysfunctional family of informal "sellers" who work in the center of Medellin. Materials and methods : A descriptive observational cross-sectional study was performed using primary sources of information to a sample of 170 workers in the year 2009 with a survey that included the SF-36 and the family APGAR. Results: The 35% of those polled presented risk of mild or severe dysfunction family, being less the prevalence for those who were not householders (RP: 0.59.) CI95%:0, 38; 94) and sold drinks – bite and sweet (RP: 0, 29. CI-95%: 0.11; 0.77), it was greater for those who perceived less income in the month (Me: $300,000; RQ: 242,000), had fewer dependants (Me:2; Rq: 2) and belonged to a low socio-economic strata (RP: 2, 82. CI – 95%:1, 40; 5.67). The differences for seven of the eight domains of the SF-36 were observed. Conclusions: The labor and extra labor factors in this working population provide information to the explanation of the prevalence of risk of dysfunctional family, helping to configure their condition of labor vulnerability.

A sample of 437 patients completed self-report measures of quality of life and social support while they were being evaluated for bone marrow transplantation (BMT) at The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. Generally, the candidates showed reasonably high levels of quality of life (QOL) on the Satisfaction with Life Domains Scale (SLDS), their present ranking on the Cantril Self-Anchoring Ladder of Life, and their scores on the Bradburn Positive Affect Scale. The level of QOL of these candidates for transplant was significantly related to their level of social support. Both availability and adequacy of social support for these transplant candidates were found to be significantly related to QOL as measured by the SLDS. Availability of social support as measured by patient membership in religious and other organizations was significantly related to Positive Affect but not Negative Affect. The Family APGAR and Relational Support Scales measures of social support were significantly correlated with both Positive and Negative Affect.

This article defines family functioning, reviews the development of measures of family functioning (FACES, FES, F-COPES, and Family APGAR), analyzes studies that have used selected measurements, discusses unresolved issues, and concludes with comments on family functioning as a resource variable in psychosocial research. The four measures of family functioning are useful in clinical research that examines how families facilitate patients' responses to the cancer experience.

espanolObjetivo: determinar la prevalencia y factores asociados al sindrome de Burnout en docentes de la Fundacion Universitaria San Martin, Ano 2011. Materiales y metodos: el tipo de estudio fue de corte transversal en una poblacion de docentes de la Fundacion Universitaria San Martin en el ano de 2011. Los criterios de inclusion fueron: pertenecer a las areas basica, preclinica y clinica, y estar vinculados a la institucion. Los criterios de exclusion fueron: aquellos docentes que no quisieran participar o no se encontraran el dia de la toma de los datos. La muestra fue conformada por aquellos que cumplieron con los criterios de seleccion. Para determinar el sindrome de Burnout se utilizo la escala de Maslach, incluyendo el APGAR familiar, variables socio demograficas y relacionadas con el trabajo. Resultados: el agotamiento emocional fue alto en un 30,8% (n=24), moderado en un 43,6% (n=34) y bajo en un 25,6% (n=20). En despersonalizacion fue alto en un 17,1% (n=14), moderado en un 48,8% (n=40) y bajo en un 34,1% (n=28). En baja realizacion personal fue moderado en un 1,4% (n=1) y bajo en un 98,6% (n=72). En el analisis multivariado se encontro asociacion con agotamiento emocional y el APGAR familiar leve, siendo 16,84 veces mayor frente al funcional, y en el estado civil soltero 10,54 veces mayor frente al casado. En despersonalizacion, el estado civil separado tuvo un riesgo 21,94 veces mayor de presentar agotamiento emocional frente al estado civil casado o union libre. EnglishObjective: to determine the prevalence and the factors associated with Burnout syndrome on professors in the Fundacion Universitaria San Martin, 2011. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional type study was performed on a population of professors in the Fundacion Universitaria San Martin in 2011. Inclusion criteria were professors of the basic, pre-clinical and clinical areas, and currently being part of the institution; exclusion criteria were those professors who did not want or could not be present when the data was collected. The sample was conformed for those that satisfied the selection criteria. To determine Burnout syndrome the Maslach scale was used, including the family APGAR, demographics and work-linked variables. Results: emotional exhaustion was higher in 30,8% (n = 24), moderate in 43,6% (n = 34) and low in 25,6% (n = 20). In depersonalization was higher in 17,1% (n = 14), moderate in 48,8% (n = 40) and low in 34,1% (n = 28). In low personal accomplishment was moderate in 1,4% (n = 1) and low in 98,6% (n = 72). Multivariate analysis reveled association with emotional exhaustion and mild family APGAR to 16,84 more times on the functional, and single marital status 10,54 more times against married. In depersonalization separate marital status was 21,94 times higher risk of emotional exhaustion present status against married or cohabiting. Conclusion: the majority of professors had a high degree of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.

A funcionalidade familiar caracteriza-se como fio estruturante para a construção de comportamentos de adolescentes. Trata-se de estudo exploratório descritivo e quantitativo, cujo objetivo foi classificar as famílias de adolescentes segundo o APGAR (Adaptation, Participation, Growth, Affection, Resolution) familiar envolvendo 1.035 adolescentes de duas escolas públicas de um estado nordestino. Os dados foram coletados com o apoio do APGAR Familiar, nos horários das aulas, em dia e horários definidos pela direção da escola e analisados por meio da estatística descritiva a partir de banco de dados do Excel. Foram classificadas como funcionais 73,2% das famílias e 26,8% como disfuncionais; a maior satisfação dos adolescentes esteve relacionada às dimensões adaptação e dedicação. Os resultados suscitam desafios para pesquisa e para inserção profissional do enfermeiro em contexto escolar assim como para um trabalho interdisciplinar e em rede no cuidado ao adolescente.

It can be difficult to maintain family connections with geographically distant members. However, advances in computer–human interaction (CHI) systems, including video-mediated communication (VMC) are emerging. While VMC does not completely substitute for physical face-to-face communication, it appears to provide a sense of virtual copresence through the addition of visual and contextual cues to verbal communication between family members. The purpose of this study was to explore current patterns of VMC use, experiences, and family functioning among self-identified VMC users separated geographically from their families. A total of 341 participants (ages 18 to above 70) completed an online survey and Family APGAR. Ninty-six percent of the participants reported that VMC was the most common communication method used and 60% used VMC at least once/week. The most common reason cited for using VMC over other methods of communication was the addition of visual cues. A significant difference between the Family APGAR scores and the number of positive comments about VMC experience was also found. This exploratory study provides insight into the acceptance of VMC and its usefulness in maintaining connections with distant family members.

This study tested the Adolescent Family Assessment Model using a descriptive correlational design. The model describes the relationships between caregiving behaviors, peer and family approval, and the outcome variables of caregiving knowledge and family functioning. Social exchange theory and social learning theory guided the study. Modelbuilding procedures involved replicated testing with data from 64 Mexican American and 50 Anglo-American adolescent mothers, 19 years of age or younger Four instruments were used: the Infant Caregiving Inventory (alpha = .93); Smilkstein's Family APGAR (alpha = .90); the Peer Approval Instrument (alpha = .73); and the Family Approval Instrument (alpha = .83). Results forAnglo mothers indicated that caregiving 2 behavior was explained by single marital status (R = .22). Family functioning was explained by age of the first child (R2 = .11). Model results for the Mexican American mothers differed from the resultant Anglo model. Caregiving knowledge was explained 2 by past experience with child care (R = .14), whereas familyfunctioning was explained by caregiving behavior (R = .10).

Exploratory, cross-sectional, descriptive study with quantitative approach, whose objectives was to identify how satisfied the mother is with her family, as well as family functioning related to infant chronic condition. The study included 59 mothers and one caregiver (grandmother) of children with a chronic condition. The study was conducted at Hospital Universitario Materno Infantil (HUMI), Clinica Escola Santa Edwiges da Associacao de Pais e Amigos de Excepcionais (APAE) and support houses for families and patients under treatment at the Hospital do Aparelho Locomotor (SARAH) from August to October 2010. For data collection, the Family APGAR instrument was applied through personal contact with the caregiver. After collection, data was tabbed at an Excel sheet. Total APGAR score was based on descriptive statistics to classify the familiar structure of evaluated caregivers. Results showed that 53.3% of the families were classified as functional and 46.7% as dysfunctional. Of these, 82.1% had mild dysfunction and 17.9% severe dysfunction. The application of Family APGAR allowed mothers to identify essential features to the family functioning. Awareness of these aspects allows nurses to plan care in an expanded perspective, involving the child and family.

Nowadays he phenomenon observed in life prolongation among elders with 80 or more years of age, is no longer exceptional. However, that condition is usually associated with fragility due to aging turning the elderly more vulnerable to several circumstances of his life, becoming a substratum from elders in the fourth age who often need care from others. Thus, the aim is to understand families functioning patterns on their daily basis and daily care of the elderly in the context of Florianopolis, SC. Descriptive evaluative diagnosis research, using the method of questioning, had the participation of seniors of 80 years old and over dependent on care along with family caregiver that were selected among the ones registered at the Family Health Program, in order to assess family dynamics, by Family APGAR, quality of life by WHOQOL and life style by Nahas Scale. Results : The elderly rated their families with good functionality. But, it must be considered with reservations, because on both quality of life evaluations from the elderly and the caregiver, responses were related to an average level, denoting some difficulty on coping within the family regarding care to the elderly.

Objetivo: Identificar los factores socios demográficos y familiares y su asociación con la prevalencia de caries en niños del colegio Madre Gabriela de San Martín. Diseño: Estudio de corte transversal. Emplazamiento: Municipio de Cartagena de Indias-Colombia. Participantes: 243 estudiantes seleccionados aleatoriamente por muestreo estratificado. Mediciones Principales: Se evaluaron factores socio demográficos y familiares (unión conyugal, escolaridad y rol de los padres, estrato socioeconómico estructura y funcionalidad familiar mediante APGAR familiar) y prevalencia de caries (índice COP-D y ceo-d). Los datos fueron analizados a partir de proporciones y razones de disparidad utilizando el programa Stata 10.0. Resultados: La prevalencia de caries fue de 51% (IC 95%: 44-57), más en el sexo femenino (70%; p=0,02).
