- Abstract
One of a series of 10 English/Pacific language audiocassettes, this bilingual (English/Woleaian) audio guide explores the benefits of reading aloud to children. Family members will learn how they can positively impact their children's success in school by reading aloud to them at home. A model session using a local story demonstrates read-aloud suggestions and techniques. This guide provides enough information to begin the important, fun, and easy activity at home. Other audio guides in the series are available in the Pacific languages of Carolinian, Chamorro, Chuukese, Hawaiian, Ilocano, Kosraean, Marshallese, Palauan, Pohnpeian, Samoan, and Yapese. (RS)

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the family awareness program for the development of reading culture on the family (OKGYAFP) competence of creating a reading culture in children and to explore how the OKGYAFP experiences of the families change their competence in creating a reading culture. For this reason, an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design was used in the study. In the quantitative phase of the research, a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group was preferred. At the qualitative phase, focus group interviews were conducted. Volunteer parents (N=30) of two 2nd grade classes of an elementary school in the Köşk district of Aydın province constituted the participants of the quantitative dimension of the research. The participants of the qualitative phase consisted of 10 volunteer parents from the experimental group of the research. The Family Competence Scale in Creating Reading Culture and the interview form were used as data collection tools in the research. In addition to descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the quantitative data of this study. Qualitative data were analyzed by thematic analysis method. According to the findings of the study, it was observed that the family efficacy post-test scores of the parents of the experimental group differed significantly in the formation of a reading culture. In addition, it was found that OKGYAFP had a high effect on family competence in the acquisition of reading culture on the parents who formed the experimental group. As a result of the research, families stated that the program created awareness in the context of reading culture. It was also observed that the level of family competence in creating a reading culture at the end of the program and the views of the participating families about the program fully overlapped.

[EN] The commonly accepted premise that collaboration among the educational community leads to school improvement and greater student achievement is not always fulfilled due to the diverse reality of schools and various initiatives to promote family participation. This work addresses the perception of teachers, school management teams and educational inspection of family-school-community relations in 23 primary schools in the Basque Autonomous Community, characterized by different criteria related to school effectiveness-ineffectiveness, aiming to identify good practice leading to school improvement. The study is descriptive-exploratory-exploratory-explanatory with mixed methodology, using questionnaires, indepth interviews and discussion groups. Results show family involvement is mediated by teaching staff´s personal factors, that all schools try to promote family collaboration, though forms of participation vary, and those which work best are proactive, stressing different collaboration dimensions. Conclusions include adopting a systemic approach, review and updating of training modalities, and assessment of teaching competences for collaboration. This research has been carried out within the R&D Project [PGC2018-094124-B-I00] GESKOLA - School improvement from a gender perspective in schools in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) financed by the State Research Agency (AEI) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU) of the Spanish Government and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF); and, within the Research Group [GIU21/056] GANDERE (https://www.ehu.eus/gandere) subsidized by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

Dolayısıyla veli eşliğinde inceleme gezileri gerçekleştirilerek öğrenciler için öğrenme çeşitliliği sağlanabilir., The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the field trips carried out with the parents within the scope of the Social Studies course in line with the opinions of the secondary school fifth grade students. In the study, the opinions of a group of students participating in the field trips, which were carried out in two different ways, carried out with parents and teachers, and did not participate in the field trips, were taken. Therefore, the interview technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. Content analysis of the data was performed using the MAXQDA-12 program. The sample group of the research consists of 113 fifth grade students studying in the central district of Kilis in the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. According to the research findings, the students (EG1) participating in the field trips carried out with their parents mostly stated that the field trips “facilitate learning”. However; students (EG2) participating in field trips carried out with a teacher were in favor of “gaining knowledge/learning” and “being fun”. Besides, students (CG) not participating in the field trips draw more attention to the aspect of “ensuring permanence in learning”. In addition, it was concluded that EG1 students preferred the parents more as the conductor of the field trip, while EG2 and CG students preferred the teacher. Moreover, EG1 and EG2 students having almost parallel views on field trips. They stated, “Their academic achievements increased, awareness of cultural heritage increased, their attitudes towards field trips were positively affected, and they also increased their motivation and attitudes towards the lesson in a positive way.” Therefore, learning diversity can be provided for students by conducting field trips accompanied by parents.

This study sheds light on the contingent effect that employee human capital may have on the relationship between family involvement and internationalisation via exporting —both in terms of entry mode (how to export) and degree (how much to export). We formulate several hypotheses by drawing mainly on arguments from the resource-based view and stewardship theory. The empirical setting is a large sample of Spanish manufacturing firms (family and non-family) operating between 1991 and 2016. Our results reveal that the positive (negative) relationship between family involvement and export intensity (direct exporting) is boosted (mitigated) at higher levels of employee human capital. Our findings thus provide statistical support for a positive and significant contingent approach to the effect human capital has on the connection between family involvement and internationalisation.

Many older patients with cancer depend on their family members for care and support and involve their family members in treatment decision-making in different stages of the cancer trajectory. Although family involvement is advocated in person-centered care, little is known about family involvement in decision-making specifically for older patients, and evidence-based strategies are scarce. The aim of this scoping review is to provide deeper understanding of factors influencing family involvement in treatment decision-making for older patients with cancer. Four databases were searched for quantitative-, qualitative- and mixed-method empirical studies describing factors influencing family involvement in treatment decision-making for older patients with cancer: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycINFO. Three independent researchers reviewed the papers for eligibility and quality and contributed to the data extraction and analysis. Twenty-seven papers were included, sixteen quantitative studies, nine qualitative studies and two mixed-method studies. Five categories of factors influencing family involvement emerged: 1) patient characteristics, 2) family member characteristics, 3) family system characteristics, 4) physician’s role and 5) cultural influences. These factors affect the level of family control in decision-making, treatment choice, decision agreement, and levels of stress and coping strategies of patients and family members. This review reveals a complex interplay of factors influencing family involvement in treatment decision-making for older patients with cancer that is rooted in characteristics of the family system. The findings underscore the need for development and implementation of evidence-based strategies for family involvement in treatment decision-making as part of patient-centered care for older patients with cancer.

Aims and objectives To explore the perspectives of family members of Aboriginal children about a) their involvement in recognising clinical deterioration in a hospital setting and b) the effectiveness of a poster designed to promote family involvement. Background To assist in the early recognition and response to clinical deterioration for hospitalised children, many escalation of care processes now include family involvement. Little is currently known about the perspectives of Australian Aboriginal families in recognising deterioration in their child and raising the alarm, or if current escalation of care systems meet the needs of Aboriginal families. Design Qualitative pragmatist approach using semi-structured interviews. Methods Seven interviews were conducted with five mothers and two grandmothers of Aboriginal children who were inpatients at a children's hospital. Thematic analysis was undertaken. Findings Two themes were identified: Theme one was: Family role in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration, with two subthemes of knowing when to worry and communicating concerns. Participants reported that some families needed more knowledge to recognise clinical deterioration. Communication barriers between families and clinicians were identified. Theme two was: Effective visual communication with three subthemes of linguistic clarity, visual appeal and content. Conclusions Additional strategies are needed to promote effective communication between clinicians and families of Aboriginal children in hospital. Posters were considered effective, particularly if including a cultural connection, images and simplified language. Practice implications These insights provide important information for health professionals and health service managers to be aware that additional communication strategies are required to support Aboriginal family involvement in recognising clinical deterioration and escalation of care.

Objectives This article describes the development and feasibility evaluation of an empowerment program for people living with dementia in nursing homes. Methods Development and feasibility evaluation of the empowerment program was guided by the British Medical Research Council’s (MRC) framework. In the developmental phase, we used intervention mapping to develop the theory- and evidence-based intervention. During the feasibility phase, two care teams utilised the program from September to December 2020. We evaluated the feasibility in terms of demand, acceptability, implementation, practicality, integration and limited efficacy. Findings This study showed that, according to healthcare professionals, the program was feasible for promoting empowerment for people living with dementia in a nursing home. Healthcare professionals mentioned an increased awareness regarding the four themes of empowerment (sense of identity, usefulness, control and self-worth), and greater focus on the small things that matter to residents. Healthcare professionals experienced challenges in involving family caregivers. Conclusion An important step is to take into account the implementation prerequisites that follow from our findings, and to further investigate feasibility, as the use of the program and data collection was hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequent research could investigate the effects of the empowerment program.

Background: Despite evidence on the significant potential value of family involvement during the treatment of patients with severe mental illness, research has shown that family involvement is largely underused. The duty of confidentiality is reported to be a key barrier to family involvement. To develop more insight into this barrier, this scoping review focuses on the following question: What are the reported ethical challenges related to confidentiality when involving family in the treatment of patients with severe mental illness? Methods: A systematic search into primary studies was conducted using the following databases: Medline (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), and Web of Science core collection (Clarivate). The PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) scheme and qualitative content analysis were used to make the ethical challenges more explicit. Results: Twelve studies—both qualitative and quantitative—were included. We identified the following main categories of ethical challenges: (1) the best interest of family members vs. confidentiality, (2) the patient's best interest vs. the right to confidentiality, (3) patient trust and alliance as a reason not to involve the relatives or not to share information, and (4) using confidentiality as a smokescreen. We also identified several subcategories and illustrative and concrete examples of ethical challenges. Conclusions: Through a systematic examination, we discovered various types of ethical challenges related to confidentiality when involving the family in the treatment of patients with severe mental illness. However, research on these ethical challenges and the constituents of these challenges remains limited and often implicit. An ethical analysis will create knowledge which may facilitate a more balanced and nuanced approach to respecting the principle of confidentiality while also considering other moral principles. The duty of confidentiality does not always have to be a major barrier to family involvement; this insight and using this ethical analysis in the training of healthcare professionals may benefit the patient, the family, and the services., Patients with severe mental illness and the ethical challenges related to confidentiality during family involvement: a scoping review

Objective: The current scoping review aims to scope the body of literature on patient and family engagement in different types of surgical interventions throughout the perioperative journey. Introduction: Surgical procedures are among the most complex components of healthcare delivery. Surgical patients have a 2.5times higher risk of adverse events than non-surgical patients, and a significant proportion of these adverse events are preventable. Patients and families are the only constant participants throughout the perioperative journey, and, as such, patient and family engagement (PFE) can benefit the quality and safety of care. There is scarce evidence on PFE throughout the entire perioperative journey, starting from referral until hospital-primary healthcare handover. Thus, the current reviews aims to map the existing knowledge on the PFE in all types of ambulatory, elective or emergency surgical procedures. Inclusion criteria: The current review will consider the population as any adult (≥18 years old) surgical patient and their family/caregiver. As for the concept and context, this review focuses on investigating PFE in patient safety interventions throughout the perioperative journey, including within and outside of hospital/healthcare. Methods: The current review was based on the Joanna Briggs Institute update guidelines along with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and PsychINFO will be searched for scientific articles published between the year 2003-2023, published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. In addition, a gray literature search was conducted. The search query will be developed in collaboration with the research librarian, and the selection of sources of evidence and data extraction will be conducted by two independent researchers; in case of disagreement, this researcher will be consulted to reach consensus. The number of eligible studies included in this review will be presented using a PRISMA flow diagram, and the interventions mapped according to the WHO Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030 objective four pillars.

Objective To test the reliability of the Chinese version of the OPTION12 (OPTION12-C) scale; and to evaluate the level of shared decision-making (SDM) in the preoperative conversations for high-risk procedures by using the OPTION12-C. Methods Two hundred and ninety-seven conversations were rated. Cronbach's alpha, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to assess the reliability of the OPTION12-C. Mean and median were applied to evaluate the scores. Results The Cronbach's alpha was 0.603. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient of the sub-items ranged from 0.002 to 0.595; the inter-rater ICC was 0.992. The mean and median of the total scores were 9.61 ( ± 3.583) and 9 respectively. 430 family members appeared in the conversations. Conclusion The reliability of the OPTION12-C was acceptable. The SDM behaviors of doctors were only scored at or close to the minimal skill level. High level of family involvement demonstrated the Chinese culture of family- centeredness. Practice implications The OPTION12-C was proved to be applicable for testing the extent of SDM. The low level of SDM indicates a need to improve Chinese doctors’ communication skills.

This study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of adults with hearing impairment and family members regarding the role of family in audiological rehabilitation. A qualitative descriptive methodology was used. A total of 37 people participated, 24 older adults with hearing impairment and 13 family members (11 spouses and 2 adult children). Four focus group interviews were conducted with the adults with hearing impairment, and 3 with family members. Five key themes emerged from analysis of the transcripts: (1) knowledge and understanding of hearing impairment and treatment; (2) the role of family members in rehabilitation is complex and multifaceted; (3) audiologists have an influential role in facilitating family member involvement; (4) the role of communication in rehabilitation; and (5) outcomes of family member involvement. Importantly, although perceptions were generally very positive, there was some uncertainty about the role of family. Audiologists have a key role in facilitating family involvement in audiological rehabilitation that is identified by adults with hearing impairment and their families. Although participants reported limited involvement in audiological rehabilitation currently, they identified potential for involvement in areas such as goal setting and decision-making.

The aim of the present study was to explore gender differences in perceived parental involvement and perceived psychological and behavioral control during emerging adulthood in two Southern European countries (Spain and Portugal). Data were collected from 491 Portuguese and 552 Spanish undergraduate emerging adults (53.7 % women and 46.3 % men) aged between 18 and 29 years (M = 20.24 and SD = 2.12). Results indicated that women perceived higher levels of parental involvement than men in both countries, and men perceived more behavioral control than women in Portugal. Furthermore, gender was found to moderate the association between perceived parental involvement and perceived psychological and behavioral control differently in each country. Taken together, our findings suggest that gender-differentiated socialization patterns persist during emerging adulthood and that these patterns may be affected by the sociocultural context., Highlights Older children’s gender is a key variable that influences family relationships during emerging adulthood in southern Europe, being Spain and Portugal the focus of the present study.Women perceive higher levels of parental involvement than men in both countries, while men perceive higher levels of behavioral control than women exclusively in Portugal. No gender differences were found among either Portuguese or Spanish emerging adults in terms of perceived psychological control.Spanish emerging adults perceive higher levels of parental involvement and behavioral control than their Portuguese counterparts.Greater perceived parental involvement is associated with less perceived psychological control among both women and men, in both countries, although this association is stronger among women.Greater perceived parental involvement is associated with less perceived behavioral control in Spain (for both genders) and for women in Portugal.

Based on the socioemotional wealth approach and a sample of 3,904 subsidiary ownership choices made by 586 family firms, this study shows that family-managed firms (i.e., those family firms with a family member in a leadership position) prefer wholly owned subsidies over joint ventures when entering foreign markets. Family-managed firms are also more likely to revise their subsidiary ownership choices and form joint ventures when in vulnerability conditions, that is, when they experience performance below aspirations and when entering a culturally distant market.

This paper re-examines the factors influencing debt-financing decisions in family firms, considering the importance of socioemotional wealth and heterogeneity issues. In particular, we explore the board of directors and generational stage as key explicative factors of heterogeneity in family businesses. Focusing on a large sample of Spanish family firms, we estimate a partial least squares model, whose results show that the higher the level of family involvement on the board of directors and the lower the generational stage, the higher the debt level of the family firm. Consequently, in addition to traditional determinants of the level of debt, the above variables should be considered to better understand the heterogeneous debt-financing decisions of family firms, and this has practical implications for them and their internal and external relationships.

This review updated a previous review [Gaugler JE (2005) Family involvement in residential long-term care: a synthesis and critical review.Aging and Mental Health9, 105–118] and focused on dementia. Fourteen years of development in family involvement with care homes following placement of a relative was explored. The review aimed to investigate two questions: (1) What types of involvement do families have with care homes following placement of people living with dementia? (2) Which factors influence family involvement with care homes? PsycINFO, MEDLINE and CINAHL Plus were searched for publications between January 2005 and December 2018. Thirty-three papers representing 30 studies were included. Papers were appraised using a quality rating tool designed for use with mixed study designs. Studies were of a reasonable quality though some weaknesses included single-site samples, high attrition rates and poor reporting. Twenty-eight papers highlighted types of involvement including collaboration, family–staff relationship development, decision making and visiting. Twenty-five papers pertained to factors influencing involvement, which included outcome of care quality evaluation, wish for recognition and sense of integration into the care team. Type of family involvement has changed over time with increased emphasis on families’ desire for partnership, to be active rather than passive advocates, and to focus on care monitoring and evaluation. Seven themes of family involvement activities are featured and a non-linear process is proposed. When compared to patient and family-centred care principles, an analysis of family involvement types found good fit overall and potential for framework improvements. Over 30 diverse factors influence inter-family variation in the level and nature of family involvement. Consideration of these factors and resolution of the gaps in evidence, including intergenerational and cultural concerns, can improve care home facilitation of family participation. This dementia-specific review is a comprehensive timely complement to Gaugler's seminal work about older adults in care.

The current health system must be revolutionized to meet the specific and real requirements of the largest population attended, older adults, and tailor the hospital to their needs, not the other way round. This is the goal of Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor: senior-friendly hospital. The project was established as a business process management system integrated into the management's hospital map. Four subprocesses were defined, as were all activities and tasks to be performed. The subprocesses are health care (delirium and functional decline prevention and the identification of frail older patients), training, the environment and its structures, and patient and family involvement. The leadership corresponds to the geriatricians who coordinate a multidisciplinary team of the project's referents. Actions must be scientific, evidence-based, rigorous, and evaluable, and they should be audited. The final aim is to change established mentalities, routines, and habits to convert the hospital to a friendlier place for older adults.

The purpose of this review is to identify the comprehensive scope of modalities in which family caregivers are involved with the care of nursing home (NH) residents living with dementia. Specific consideration will be given to involvement in care outside of decision-making, which is a well-documented role for families in literature (Fetherstonhaugh, et al., 2017). Ultimately, findings may be used to inform future research pertaining to the involvement of family in care of NH residents with dementia, including measurement, intervention, and policy considerations. We are unaware of a previous review that apply this framework to review literature pertaining to the care provided by family of NH residents living with dementia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected daily life all over the world, as well as educational activities. In Turkey, as in the rest of the world, measures have been taken, including closing schools and conducting distance education, to reduce the negative effects of the pandemic. Family participation studies in pre-school education are a very important factor and affect the continuity and permanence of education. For this reason, it is important to reveal the practices of family participation in the process we are in and to find solutions to the needs. A case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this study, which aims to examine the family involvement studies that preschool teachers have applied in the post-pandemic education process. The study was carried out with 13 Preschool Teachers working in different provinces throughout Turkey. Data were obtained with an open-ended questionnaire. As a result of the study, it was seen that the family participation studies carried out in the post-pandemic period have changed. The teachers stated that they informed the families about the activities at school or gave homework that they could do together at home, but it was determined that this was not sufficient for effective family ınvolvement., COVID-19 pandemisi tüm dünyada günlük yaşamı etkilediği gibi eğitimi-öğretim faaliyetlerini de oldukça fazla etkilemiştir.

End-of-life decision making involves clinicians, patients, and relatives; yet, the law in Israel hardly recognises the role of relatives. This raises the question of the law’s impact in practice and, hence, whether it should be amended. This issue is examined on the basis of findings from a qualitative, interview-based study conducted in Israel among relatives of dying patients. The findings indicate that there are areas in which clinicians and relatives do not adhere to the law in the end-of-life decision-making process. For example, they do not always ascertain the patient's end-of-life preferences, which ignores a patient's right to autonomy and their right to make informed decisions. The apparent gaps between the actual conduct of clinicians and relatives on the one hand and the directives of the Israeli Dying Patient Act 2005 on the other, lead us to propose several changes to the Act.

Absenteeism is of great concern for K–12 school students in the United States. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of parental participation types in absenteeism of Elementary and Secondary Education (K-12) students in the United States. We analyze the data of the U.S. Department of Education (Hanson et al., 2019), in relation to students, schools and parents’ characteristics, along with various parental involvement activities, for exploring how these factors influence K-12 students’ absenteeism in the United States. We employ Chi-square tests for the significance of relationships between parental involvement types and absenteeism of K-12 students. We also undertake multiple logistic regression analyses to evaluate the significance and odds of K-12 students’ absenteeism due to parental involvement activities and other underlying factors. The results of bivariate analyses suggest that parental involvement types are significantly associated with K-12 absenteeism (chi-squared p-value

As researchers and school stakeholders determine ways to best support Black and Latino adolescent boys from low-income communities in actualizing their postsecondary future ambitions, more attention is needed on the types of futures these boys imagine and how family members influence this process. Guided by future orientations and possible selves frameworks, this school-based ethnographic study investigated the ways families influenced what the author calls the “postsecondary future selves” of Black and Latino (i.e., U.S.-born Salvadoran) 11th-grade boys ( N = 5). Described as what youth conceptualize as possible, likely, and expected for their lives after high school, postsecondary future selves considers three future domains: “college” (postsecondary education), “career” (postcollege employment trajectory), and “condition” (expected financial stability, relational and familial prospects, future living arrangements, happiness, and joy). Findings indicate that families built their boys’ capacities for envisioning and making strides toward ideal futures. Finding “success,” “being somebody,” and “having a future” underscored familial messages that emphasized the salience of college going in obtaining a career and life condition that would lead their boys to finding pride and fulfillment. Implications support stakeholders in building adolescents’ efficacy for threading linkages between college going and college majors, career trajectories, and expected life conditions, thus complementing familial-based supports.

This study aims to identify the perceptions of the educational community of the Region of Murcia on the influence of family involvement in homework. The collection of information has been carried out through three structured questionnaires, elaborated ad hoc and intended for each of the participating groups. These groups have been formed by 259 students, 81 teachers and 163 families. Consequently, the participants add up to a total of 503. The design of the research and the nature of the information have required a quantitative treatment of a descriptive-comparative nature. Before the analysis of the results, the internal consistency and construct validity of the scales of the questionnaires around the dimension of family involvement and homework have also been studied. The results show the existence of a positive perception by the whole community towards the participation of parents in school tasks, since they think that this collaboration brings great benefits to schoolchildren.

Objectives Uncertainty about receiving care and assistance in the future has been increasing among older adults in Korea. This study examines whether expectations about receiving care from various sources (i.e., formal and/or filial caregivers) are related to life satisfaction among older adults in Korea. Methods Using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (N = 3,607, aged 65 or older), this study estimated fixed effects regression models to investigate longitudinal within-person associations between future care expectations and life satisfaction. Results The results of this study revealed that developing expectations of care from family caregivers is positively associated with life satisfaction. Beginning to expect care from nonfamily caregivers, however, is not associated with life satisfaction. When disaggregating different sources of care by family member type, expecting care from a spouse or daughter(s), but not son(s), is associated with higher life satisfaction. Gender-specific analyses showed that expecting care from daughter(s) is positively associated with life satisfaction among both men and women, whereas expectations of spousal care are associated with only men’s life satisfaction. This study also found suggestive but not conclusive evidence that an association between care expectations from family caregivers and life satisfaction is stronger among older adults with lower education. Discussion Reducing uncertainty about future care may improve older adults’ subjective well-being. Policymakers may consider policies and programs that support family care of the aged, and more fundamentally, encourage family involvement in the lives of older people.

This study investigated whether an intensive group-based cognitive-behavioral therapy program with family involvement for children with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder could help reduce parental distress by addressing the larger family system. This study also examined associations between parental distress and parent-reported child outcomes of treatment. Two hundred ninety-nine children and adolescents, ages 6–19, who were patients in the intensive treatment program and their caregivers participated in this intervention-based study. Parents reported significant reductions in their own distress from admission to discharge, and greater reductions in parent-reported distress predicted greater reductions in parents’ reports of their children’s anxiety symptoms and the degree of child functional impairment. Higher levels of parent-reported parent mental health symptoms at children’s admission and at discharge were associated with poorer levels of functioning in children at discharge. Parents’ mental health symptoms may play a critical role in children and adolescents’ treatment outcomes and therefore may need to be a separate treatment target.

This meta-analysis of 142 studies from 36 countries examines how the institutional environment moderates the relationship between family involvement and firm performance. Specifically, we investigate performance differences between family and nonfamily firms while using property rights protection, institutional stability, and a country’s regime type as moderators. Our analysis shows that institutional stability serves as a decisive moderator of the relationship between family involvement and firm performance and that family firms outperform nonfamily firms in democracies and autocracies but not in anocracies. Based on these findings, we provide and discuss both practical recommendations for family firms and theoretical implications for institutional theory.

The Voices into Action (VIA) project examines the critical issue of involving the voices of learners and their families in educational decision-making. It aims to promote a more participatory culture in relevant processes and activities at local, regional and national levels. This literature review provides a focused rationale and key evidence on meaningful ways to involve learner and family voices in educational decision-making. It summarises important European and international policy information on the topic and sets out key research knowledge from the past 20 years. The review introduces the ‘VIA framework for meaningful participation’, building on existing theoretical models and frameworks for learners’ and families’ meaningful involvement. It also presents recent examples from research and from Agency member countries, offering practical evidence to accompany the theoretical discussion. The review’s key findings highlight important considerations for involving learners and families more systematically in educational decision-making at all levels., This publication has been funded with support from the European Commission. Building upon research utilizing Martin’s Mathematical Socialization and Identity Framework, we examine factors related to community and family involvement to advance the current discourse that informs policies. Data from the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS:09) public-use file provided a sample of 1,029 Black girls for our analyses. We developed a theoretically-sound inclusive measure, as defined by Black girls, titled the Community and Family Involvement Predictive Scale for Mathematics Outcomes utilizing Nonlinear Principal Components Analysis with a Categorical Principal Components Analysis program. Results are an intersectional measure that considers family, peers, and teachers. Implications for policy include a need for federal, state, and district policymakers to consider a wider variety of contexts, specifically for Black girls, in which community and family partnerships are empowered and prioritized in policies focused on parental involvement.

This paper explores whether family and non‐family firms differ in terms of their capability to introduce green patenting. By considering the environmental performance as a corporate social responsibility related concern, the analysis is based on a large data set of patenting activities carried out by Italian manufacturing firms over the period 2009–2017. Results show that family firms are less likely than non‐family firms to implement innovations in green technologies. This holds true whatever the level of accumulation in green and non‐green knowledge.

Family involvement in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans has the potential to improve treatment retention and outcomes. Current protocols that incorporate family members into treatment tend to involve at least 15 sessions, and none are designed to complement Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) or Prolonged Exposure (PE), the two most widely used and heavily promoted evidence-based PTSD therapies in the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. The current paper describes the development and initial feasibility and acceptability of a Brief Family Intervention (the BFI) designed to be delivered as an adjunct to veterans’ individual CPT/PE. The BFI focuses on providing psychoeducation about PTSD and treatment, building family member support for treatment, and reducing family symptom accommodation. A detailed review of the treatment structure and activities is provided, and qualitative data from four dyads (veterans and their spouses/significant others) at baseline and post-intervention are presented. Veterans and partners reported positive responses to the program and were enthusiastic about its utility. Larger randomized controlled studies will be needed to determine the protocol’s efficacy and effectiveness.

Purpose Drawing on the resource-based view, this study aims to examine how family involvement in migrant-founded small businesses gives rise to distinctive resources that help these businesses survive. Design/methodology/approach Using microdata from the 2007 US survey of business owners (SBO), this study uses logit regression modeling to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings Results show that small businesses founded by migrant entrepreneurs are less likely to survive and that family involvement weakens the negative relationship between founder migrant status and business survivability. In addition, the positive moderating effect associated with family involvement is further strengthened by the use of external/borrowing startup capital, thus migrant families founded small businesses with access to external capital have the highest probability of survival. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on both migrant entrepreneurship and family business. This paper finds family involvement in the business, interacting with the founder’s migrant status, tends to create distinctive resource endowments that help to compensate for the resource constraints associated with migrant entrepreneurs. Such resource endowments may take the form of high levels of solidarity among migrant family members and the spanning role of the migrant kinship networks extended from the country of origin to the country of residence.

This study aims to introduce the 1953 Kindergarten Education Program which has not been known sufficiently within historical development of preschool education programs in Turkey, to include it in the related literature and thus, to enrich the basis of preschool education program development process. Among qualitative research methods, the document analysis method was used in the study. This method includes analysis of written materials that comprise information about the targeted case/cases for investigation (Yildirim & Simsek, 2006). The “descriptive analysis” in which conceptual structure had previously been determined clearly was adopted. The “Preschool Education Program Descriptive Analysis Form” which was developed by the researcher during analysis was used. The 1953 Kindergarten Education Program was introduced based on the elements of preschool education programs (child's developmental features, goal, content, educational status, assessment and family involvement). According to the study results, the Preschool Education Program was negotiated and accepted in the 5th National Education Council of Turkey gathered in 1953 and was published for application by the Ministry of National Education. The program was supported by two guidebooks based on the needs. The study results indicated that developmental features of children and age groups are considered in the 1953 Kindergarten Education Program, targets are determined, the content and educational status are satisfied, evaluation of children, teacher and parents is ensured and family involvement is cared. Thus, the 1953 Kindergarten Education Program can also be included objectively while investigating developmental process of preschool education programs.

Purpose Providing an overview of studies on family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks of critically ill patients, addressing two research questions (RQ): 1) What are the perceptions of patients, relatives, and staff about family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks? and 2) What are the effects of interventions of family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks? Material and methods Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods articles were identified using PubMed, Embase and CINAHL. Studies reporting on family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks of adult critically ill patients were included. A convergent segregated approach for mixed-methods reviews was used. Results Eighteen articles were included; 13 for RQ1, and 5 for RQ2. The included studies were quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method, including between 8 and 452 participants. The descriptive studies exhibit a general appreciation for involvement of relatives in physiotherapy-related tasks, although most of the studies reported on family involvement in general care and incorporated diverse physiotherapy-related tasks. One study explored the effectiveness of family participation on a rehabilitation outcome and showed that the percentage of patients mobilizing three times a day increased. Conclusion Positive attitudes were observed among patients, their relatives and staff towards family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks of critically ill patients. However, limited research has been done into the effect of interventions containing family participation in physiotherapy-related tasks.
