Diapering requires carework, or the physical and emotional labor needed to care for others. Caregivers who are responsible for diapering their children must make decisions about how to best care for their children’s needs. Poverty presents a barrier to providing ideal carework for caregivers unable to afford an adequate diaper supply. To consider whether cloth diapers could help caregivers overcome diaper need, or a lack of sufficient diapers to keep a child clean and healthy, the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona (DBSA) partnered with the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) at the University of Arizona to evaluate whether cloth diapers could help caregivers mitigate the financial stress of purchasing diapers. In this article, we review the findings of the DBSA-BARA Cloth Diaper Kit Project by exploring the benefits and challenges caregivers encountered when they used cloth diapers. Economic need ultimately drove the majority of these caregivers to use cloth diapers, even while encountering challenges, such as an increased time commitment, a lack of social support, and some discomfort for their children. Caregivers also found that cloth diapers provided important benefits, such as reducing the stress of not having a sufficient diaper supply.

We review the development of the contra-rotating propellers from the origins to the present. Initially, these systems were proposed to increase speed, then to increase propulsive efficiency, and thus reduce fuel burn. Ultimately, they hit another environmental limit: too much noise. Acoustics has been in fact the main focus of the development in the past 30 years. Pioneering work done across countries demonstrated several unique features of this propulsor. Various embodiments are available, namely contra-rotating, counter-rotating, co-axial, tandem, open rotor and prop-fans, collectively named contra-rotating propellers. This review only considers concepts that have been applied to real aircraft, prototypes that are known to have been flight tested (about 70 vehicles), or representative laboratory models. Five classifications are proposed: pioneers (before 1940), golden years (1940–1950), Western airplanes (1950s onwards), Soviet-Russian airplanes (1950s onwards) and modern developments (1980s onwards). Selected experimental aircraft and laboratory concepts are mentioned, where these appear to advance the state-of-the-art. Power plants evolved from internal combustion engines to the modern gas turbine engines requiring new solutions. Engine layouts and propulsion configurations are analysed where appropriate. It is concluded that propulsive efficiency can only be achieved at a cost of multiple engineering problems, some of which remain unsolved.

Despite a theoretical shift toward anti-racism, racial projects within social work assert public positions against structural racism, while upholding mechanisms that perpetuate its existence. Analyzing the perceptions and intentions of incoming white liberal social work students is necessary for any effort to deconstruct racial projects in the social work profession. The sample used in the present study is composed of a white (n = 139), mostly liberal-identified (84%) group of incoming first year MSW students. Students were asked to provide open-ended responses to a vignette about a Black mother engaging with Child Protective Services (CPS). The vignette was designed to assess structural analysis and decision-making in response to real-world examples of racism and anti-Blackness. The study employed semantic thematic analysis to describe the ways social work students make meaning of the vignette and how this process informs their proposed actions. Students varied significantly on the level of analysis they provided in response to the vignette. The analysis examines patterns of racial projects across 3 main response categories: 1) Descriptive, 2) Analytical, and 3) Action. This analysis is important for informing pedagogical innovations aimed at training anti-racist and anti-oppressive social workers.

The rheology of the polymer matrix plays a crucial role in determining the quality of thermoplastic laminates. To highlight this aspect, we prepared laminates based on polyamide 11 (PA11), a bio-based matrix with tricky rheology, and basalt fiber fabrics. The PA11 viscosity rapidly increases over time due to degradation phenomena. Samples were prepared by two procedures differing in terms of duration and intensity of the hot compaction step. Morphological analyses revealed that the fast procedure ensures a better impregnation of the fabrics, with a substantial reduction of the volume of voids (1%, against 9% of the slow procedure). This reflects in considerable increases of the flexural modulus (ca. + 20%) and strength (ca. + 60%) and a significant reduction the extent of impact damage. This study provides useful guidelines for a correct selection of the processing parameters based on the knowledge of the rheological behavior of the polymer matrix.

A review of the aerodynamic modelling of insect flight is presented. This paper consists of two sections covering various aspects related to the development of flapping wing and research on the aerodynamic modelling of insect flight. First, we provide an overview of the nature of the flyers, including current issues and challenges related to the evolution of nature-inspired design. The second section discusses some of the techniques required to develop aerodynamic models, seeks to address issues and to identify appropriate aerodynamic modelling methods for the development of insect flight models. Experimental models of flapping wing insect are discussed, followed by numerical models. Finally, we highlight the development of prototypes in insect flight, on the design, sizing and classification of the flying insect prototypes.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to long-term and permanent motor dysfunctions, and nervous system abnormalities. Injury to the spinal cord triggers a signaling cascade that results in activation of the inflammatory cascade, apoptosis, and Zn(II) ion homeostasis. Trehalose (Tre), a nonreducing disaccharide, and l-carnosine (Car), (β-alanyl-l-histidine), one of the endogenous histidine dipeptides have been recognized to suppress early inflammatory effects, oxidative stress and to possess neuroprotective effects. We report on the effects of the conjugation of Tre with Car (Tre–car) in reducing inflammation in in vitro and in vivo models. The in vitro study was performed using rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12 cell line). After 24 h, Tre–car, Car, Tre, and Tre + Car mixture treatments, cells were collected and used to investigate Zn2+ homeostasis. The in vivo model of SCI was induced by extradural compression of the spinal cord at the T6–T8 levels. After treatments with Tre, Car and Tre–Car conjugate 1 and 6 h after SCI, spinal cord tissue was collected for analysis. In vitro results demonstrated the ionophore effect and chelating features of l-carnosine and its conjugate. In vivo, the Tre–car conjugate treatment counteracted the activation of the early inflammatory cascade, oxidative stress and apoptosis after SCI. The Tre–car conjugate stimulated neurotrophic factors release, and influenced Zn2+ homeostasis. We demonstrated that Tre–car, Tre and Car treatments improved tissue recovery after SCI. Tre–car decreased proinflammatory, oxidative stress mediators release, upregulated neurotrophic factors and restored Zn2+ homeostasis, suggesting that Tre–car may represent a promising therapeutic agent for counteracting the consequences of SCI.

The most important factor in treating hypertension is assessing an individual patient's true blood pressure load, the cornerstone being research-grade office determination. Office blood pressure should be supplemented with out-of-office measurement, including home and ambulatory monitoring (if available), which we consider complementary and not interchangeable. Controversy remains for initiation of treatment of white coat hypertension, where cardiovascular risk lies between normotension and sustained hypertension; antihypertensive therapy should be considered unless low cardiovascular risk, wherein pressures should be followed for progression to sustained hypertension. Available data do not support intensification of therapy for the white coat effect due to the similar cardiovascular risk to controlled hypertension. Given the higher cardiovascular risk of the masked effect, initiation of therapy for masked hypertension and intensification for masked uncontrolled hypertension are indicated, acknowledging the dearth of supporting data. Optimally, randomized controlled trials are needed to determine the benefit of treating the 4 incongruous phenotypes between office and out-of-office measurements, that is, those with white coat or masked effects. We make no recommendations regarding chronotherapy pending results of ongoing trials.

Introduction: HIV continuum of care consists of five steps needed to effectively treat and prevent the spread of HIV. Linkage to and retention of patients to this Continuum of Care is a global priority. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the quality of this Continuum, as people living with HIV, have had to shelter reducing their access to services. As well, HIV agencies have had to close, reduce hours, and shift personnel. Purpose and Methods: The purpose of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to examine the person-centered referral-making behaviors and patterns used by providers to engage patients in the care continuum. Three classes of linkage behaviors among 285 providers in 34 community agencies in New York City were identified using latent class analysis. Results: These linkage behaviors include High (48%); Moderate (34%); and Low (18%). Both High and Moderate consisted of a blend of active and passive strategies and tracking systems. The High included more active strategies such as escorting patients to appointments. Linkage class membership was significantly associated with frequency of linkages to primary care (p=.020). COVID-19 disruptions demonstrate how the Care Continuum has been undermined by insufficient organizational resources. Conclusion: Findings suggest, addresses gaps in linkages should enhance the overall Continuum of Care provided to individuals diagnosed and living with HIV.

Research on propeller performance has been reinvigorated by the development of new classes of vehicles, ranging from electrically powered fixed-wing aircraft, to multi-rotor electrical Vertical Take-off/Landing (eVTOL) vehicles and tilt-rotor aircraft. These types of aircraft utilise a range of modern propellers, often with more advanced planforms and features such as anhedral, and operate in flight envelopes that are outwith the traditional bands of performance. The use of advanced materials (mostly composites), high geometrical sweeps and variable angular velocities are the source of unsteady aerodynamics, that is often coupled with the blade’s structural response. Data from experimental investigations is mostly historic, with the majority of studies conducted before 1960, when aviation shifted rapidly towards jet propulsion. These studies lack in flutter boundary assessment. Modern propellers are likely to be pushed toward their flutter boundaries, but the experimental database published to-date is insufficient to provide flutter boundary assessment. This review examines the value of the available experimental research and the status of the state-of-the-art numerical methods, in order to establish the requirements for modern research on propeller stall flutter.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal dysbiosis characterized by a malodorous discharge and irritation. The imbalance of the vaginal microbiota plays a key role in the development of BV. It has been demonstrated that Gardnerella vaginalis (GV), a facultative anaerobic bacillus, is involved in BV. Due to the rising number of antimicrobial-resistant species, recurrence of BV is becoming more frequent in women; thus, alternative treatments to antibiotics are needed. Natural substances have recently shown a great efficacy for the treatment of vaginal dysbiosis. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the beneficial effect of a product containing pea protein (PP), grape seed extract (GS) and lactic acid (LA) in an in vivo model of Gardnerella vaginalis-induced vaginosis by intravaginal administration of GV suspension (1 × 106 CFU/20 µL saline). Our results demonstrated that the product containing PP, GS and LA significantly reduced GV proliferation. More specifically, it significantly preserved tissue architecture and reduced neutrophil infiltration, inflammatory markers and sialidase activity when used both as a pre- or a post-treatment. Moreover, the product displayed strong bioadhesive properties. Therefore, our data suggested that the product containing PP, GS and LA could be used as alternative preventive or curative treatment for the management of BV.

The constant increase of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is recognized worldwide to severely impact the environment and human health. Zeolites possess a high adsorption capacity for CO2 removal, but their powdery form prevents their use in many practical applications. When binding agents are used, a partial occlusion of the porosity can severely compromise the adsorption capacity. In this regard, a great challenge is producing compact composite adsorbents while maintaining a high specific surface area to preserve the pristine performance of zeolites. Here, this goal was achieved by preparing beads with a high content of zeolite 13X (up to 90 wt %) using a chitosan aerogel as the binding agent. Studies show that neuronal dysregulation of the vacuolar protein sorting 35 (VPS35), the main component of the retromer complex recognition core, results in altered protein trafficking and degradation and is involved in neurodegeneration. Since the functional role of VPS35 in endothelial cells has not been fully investigated, in the present study we aimed at characterizing the effect of its downregulation on these pathways.Methods: Genetic silencing of VPS35 in human brain endothelial cells; measurement of retromer complex system proteins, autophagy and ubiquitin-proteasome systems.Results: VPS35-downregulated endothelial cells had increased expression of LC3B2/1 and more ubiquitinated products, markers of autophagy flux and impaired proteasome activity, respectively. Additionally, compared with controls VPS35 downregulation resulted in significant accumulation of tau protein and its phosphorylated isoforms.Discussion: Our findings demonstrate that in brain endothelial cells retromer complex dysfunction by influencing endosome-lysosome degradation pathways results in altered proteostasis. Background: The vacuolar protein sorting 35 (VPS35) is the main component of the retromer recognition core complex system which regulates intracellular cargo protein sorting and trafficking. Downregulation of VPS35 has been linked to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases via endosome dysregulation. Objective: Here we show that the genetic manipulation of VPS35 affects intracellular degradation pathways. Methods: A neuronal cell line expressing human APP Swedish mutant was used. VPS35 silencing was performed treating cells with VPS35 siRNA or Ctr siRNA for 72 h. Results: Downregulation of VPS35 was associated with alteration of autophagy flux and intracellular accumulation of acidic and ubiquitinated aggregates suggesting that dysfunction of the retromer recognition core leads to a significant alteration in both pathways. Conclusion: Taken together, our data demonstrate that besides cargo sorting and trafficking, VPS35 by supporting the integral function of the retromer complex system plays an important role also as a critical regulator of intracellular degradation pathways.

We introduce Functional Diffusion Processes (FDPs), which generalize score-based diffusion models to infinite-dimensional function spaces. FDPs require a new mathematical framework to describe the forward and backward dynamics, and several extensions to derive practical training objectives. These include infinite-dimensional versions of Girsanov theorem, in order to be able to compute an ELBO, and of the sampling theorem, in order to guarantee that functional evaluations in a countable set of points are equivalent to infinite-dimensional functions. We use FDPs to build a new breed of generative models in function spaces, which do not require specialized network architectures, and that can work with any kind of continuous data. Our results on real data show that FDPs achieve high-quality image generation, using a simple MLP architecture with orders of magnitude fewer parameters than existing diffusion models., Comment: Under review

Autoencoders and their variants are among the most widely used models in representation learning and generative modeling. However, autoencoder-based models usually assume that the learned representations are i.i.d. and fail to capture the correlations between the data samples. To address this issue, we propose a novel Sparse Gaussian Process Bayesian Autoencoder (SGPBAE) model in which we impose fully Bayesian sparse Gaussian Process priors on the latent space of a Bayesian Autoencoder. We perform posterior estimation for this model via stochastic gradient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. We evaluate our approach qualitatively and quantitatively on a wide range of representation learning and generative modeling tasks and show that our approach consistently outperforms multiple alternatives relying on Variational Autoencoders.

We study non-interacting fermionic systems undergoing continuous monitoring and driven by biased reservoirs. Averaging over the measurement outcomes, we derive exact formulas for the particle and heat flows in the system. We show that these currents feature competing elastic and inelastic components, which depend non-trivially on the monitoring strength $\gamma$. We highlight that monitor-induced inelastic processes lead to non-reciprocal currents, allowing to extract work from measurements without active feedback control. Coastal morphology is key to modern understanding of threats and nature risks to coastal communities. A quarter of the world’s beaches are eroding due to natural or man-made activities. Dynamics of coastal morphology occurs in space and time (4D), making it difficult to measure using standard survey approaches. We introduce a technique that uses multispectral satellite data and satellite lidar to provide frequent spatial observations of coastal zones. Thanks to international cooperation through the Horizon 2020 program, the analytical processes are based on a highly automatic inversion of the radiative transfer equation (RTE), which enables to model shallow water depth without the access to local survey data. The workflow is installed on AWS cloud environment with directly linked to the satellite data archive. Leveraging these Copernicus satellite data, the solution can generate high frequent and high-resolution shallow water bathymetric data continuously and for the past decade. In combination with land topographic models derived from stereo satellite imagery and verification with bathy-topo data from a space-born green lidar system (IceSat-2 Atlas), this allows for verification and control of vertical accuracies.This solution allows for a rapid and scalable approach to generate shallow water bathymetric and topographic surfaces from small sites to a national level. It serves as a crucial dataset to manage coastal resilience strategies and reduce disaster risk. This will be demonstrated in pilot sites from the southern Baltic to the Caribbean where we can quantify and visualise the changes of the coastal morphology in 4D., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The Discrete Logarithm Problem (DLP) for elliptic curves has been extensively studied since, for instance, it is the core of the security of cryptosystems like Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). In this paper, we present an attack to the DLP for elliptic curves based on its connection to the problem of lifting, by using the exponential map for elliptic curves and its inverse over $ \mathbb{Z} / p^k \mathbb{Z} $. Additionally, we show that hyperelliptic curves are resistant to this attack, meaning that these latter curves offer a higher level of security compared to the classic elliptic curves used in cryptography., Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 20 references

This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

Enteric neuropathy underlies long-term gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction associated with several pathological conditions. Our previous studies have demonstrated that structural and functional changes in the enteric nervous system (ENS) result in persistent alterations of intestinal functions long after the acute insult. These changes lead to aberrant immune response and chronic dysregulation of the epithelial barrier. Damage to the ENS is prognostic of disease progression and plays an important role in the recurrence of clinical manifestations. This suggests that the ENS is a viable therapeutic target to alleviate chronic intestinal dysfunction. Our recent studies in preclinical animal models have progressed into the development of novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of enteric neuropathy in various chronic GI disorders. We have tested the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective efficacy of novel compounds targeting specific molecular pathways. Ex vivo studies in human tissues freshly collected after resection surgeries provide an understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in enteric neuropathy. In vivo treatments in animal models provide data on the efficacy and the mechanisms of actions of the novel compounds and their combinations with clinically used therapies. These novel findings provide avenues for the development of safe, cost-effective, and highly efficacious treatments of GI disorders.

Background: Physical activity (PA) can play a role in lowering the risk of breast cancer (BC), but also in reducing perioperative complications and treatments related side effects, improving the quality of life and decreasing mortality in BC survivors. PA and nutritional screening are not offered to patients after cancer diagnosis as standard of care, even in high quality breast units. Methods: From February 2019 to March 2020, we performed a preoperative physical and nutritional screening in 504 consecutive BC patients waiting for surgery. The screening included an IPAQ questionnaire to evaluate the level of physical activity; nutritional screening with measurement of anthropometric parameters (weight, height, waist and hips circumference, BMI, and waist hip ratio) and evaluation of body composition using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Results: The majority of patients in our series resulted physically inactive: clustering the IPAQ scores, 47% of patients proved to be physically inactive (MET score 2520). In addition, approximately half of the patients (49.01%) resulted overweight or obese, and more than half (55.2%) had a percentage of fatty tissue over the recommended cut off for adult women. Conclusions: Our data confirm that assessment of PA levels should become part of the standard preoperative evaluation of BC patients and behavioral interventions should be offered to them, in order to pre-habilitate for surgery and improve outcomes. IPAQ Questionnaire and body composition analysis could be quick and easy screening tools in order to identify which patients may need more support in being active during and after anticancer treatments.

Tumor cells have evolved to express immunosuppressive molecules allowing their evasion from the host’s immune system. These molecules include programmed death ligands 1 and 2 (PD-L1 and PD-L2). Cancer cells can also produce acetylcholine (ACh), which plays a role in tumor development. Moreover, tumor innervation can stimulate vascularization leading to tumor growth and metastasis. The effects of atropine and muscarinic receptor 3 (M3R) blocker, 1,1-dimethyl-4-diphenylacetoxypiperidinium iodide (4-DAMP), on cancer growth and spread were evaluated in vitro using murine colon cancer cell line, CT-26, and in vivo in an orthotopic mouse model of colorectal cancer. In the in vitro model, atropine and 4-DAMP significantly inhibited CT-26 cell proliferation in a dose dependent manner and induced apoptosis. Atropine attenuated immunosuppressive markers and M3R via inhibition of EGFR/AKT/ERK signaling pathways. However, 4-DAMP showed no effect on the expression of PD-L1, PD-L2, and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) on CT-26 cells but attenuated M3R by suppressing the phosphorylation of AKT and ERK. Blocking of M3R in vivo decreased tumor growth and expression of immunosuppressive, cholinergic, and angiogenic markers through inhibition of AKT and ERK, leading to an improved immune response against cancer. The expression of immunosuppressive and cholinergic markers may hold potential in determining prognosis and treatment regimens for colorectal cancer patients. This study’s results demonstrate that blocking M3R has pronounced antitumor effects via several mechanisms, including inhibition of immunosuppressive molecules, enhancement of antitumor immune response, and suppression of tumor angiogenesis via suppression of the AKT/ERK signaling pathway. These findings suggest a crosstalk between the cholinergic and immune systems during cancer development. In addition, the cholinergic system influences cancer evasion from the host’s immunity.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence on individuals’ time perception of observing a range of foods differing in calorific content. In a first experiment, 92 adult participants performed a temporal bisection task with stimulus durations presented in the form of high- or low-calorie food pictures as well as matched non-food control pictures. In a second experiment, 102 participants performed a strict replication of Experiment 1, without the low-calorie pictures condition as it showed less pronounced effects. Across the two experiments, the data revealed common results. An overestimation of time was observed in relation to high-calorie food pictures when compared with non-food pictures (Experiment 2), and the effect was a function of participants' diet control (Experiments 1 & 2). Contrary to our hypothesis, the more the participants reported controlling their diet, the less they overestimated the time when presented with food stimuli. The participants who controlled their diet reported being less aroused by the high-calorie food pictures, allowing the assumption that the modulation in time overestimation relies on the arousal response generated by high-calorie food pictures.
