1. An excess of cosmic ray electrons at energies of 300–800 GeV

Abstract: Galactic cosmic rays consist of protons, electrons and ions, most of which are believed to be accelerated to relativistic speeds in supernova remnants. All components of the cosmic rays show an intensity that decreases as a power law with increasing energy (for example as E(-2.7)). Electrons in particular lose energy rapidly through synchrotron and inverse Compton processes, resulting in a relatively short lifetime (about 10(5) years) and a rapidly falling intensity, which raises the possibility of seeing the contribution from individual nearby sources (less than one kiloparsec away). Here we report an excess of galactic cosmic-ray electrons at energies of approximately 300-800 GeV, which indicates a nearby source of energetic electrons. Such a source could be an unseen astrophysical object (such as a pulsar or micro-quasar) that accelerates electrons to those energies, or the electrons could arise from the annihilation of dark matter particles (such as a Kaluza-Klein particle with a mass of about 620 GeV).

Abstract: The purpose of the ATIC balloon experiment is to measure the energy spectra of primary cosmic rays with individual charge resolution from protons to iron over the energy range from ∼50 GeV to 200 TeV. The particle energy is measured by a bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation calorimeter. The procedure of calorimeter calibration is described, in particular, calibration of the temperature dependence of the calorimeter sensitivity using the data of in-flight measurements. A technique for determining the energy deposited in the calorimeter in view of the temperature dependence of its sensitivity is presented. The maximum systematic error in determining the deposited energy by the calorimeter is 10% or less, and the probable error is estimated at 6%.

Abstract: The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) Balloon Experiment had a successful test flight and a science flight in 2000–01 and 2002–03 and an unsuccessful launch in 2005–06 from McMurdo, Antarctica, returning 16 and 19 days of flight data. ATIC is designed to measure the spectra of cosmic rays (protons to iron). The instrument is composed of a Silicon matrix detector followed by a carbon target interleaved with scintillator tracking layers and a segmented BGO calorimeter composed of 320 individual crystals totaling 18 radiation lengths to determine the particle energy. BGO (Bismuth Germanate) is an inorganic scintillation crystal and its light output depends not only on the energy deposited by particles but also on the temperature of the crystal. The temperature of balloon instruments during flight is not constant due to sun angle variations as well as differences in albedo from the ground. The change in output for a given energy deposit in the crystals in response to temperature variations was determined.

Abstract: The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) experiment is designed to investigate the charge composition and energy spectra of primary cosmic rays over the energy range from about 10(11) to 10(14) eV during Long Duration Balloon (LDB) flights from McMurdo, Antarctica. Currently, analysis from the ATIC-1 test flight and ATIC-2 science flight is underway and preparation for a second science flight is in progress. Charge identification of the incident cosmic ray is accomplished, primarily, by a pixilated Silicon Matrix detector located at the very top of the instrument. While it has been shown that the Silicon Matrix detector provides good charge identification even in the presence of electromagnetic shower backscatter from tile calorimeter, the detector only measures the charge once. In this paper, we examine use of the top scintillator hodoscope detector to provide a second measure of the cosmic ray charge and, thus, improve the ATIC charge identification. (c) 2007 COSPAR. Abstract: This paper reports on the results of measurements performed in the course of the ATIC-2 balloon experiment (2002–2003) for the energy spectra of particles (such as protons; He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe nuclei; and some groups of nuclei) and the all-particle energy spectrum in primary cosmic rays at energies ranging from 50 GeV to 200 TeV. The conclusion is drawn that the energy spectra of protons and helium nuclei differ substantially (the spectrum of protons is steeper) and that the shape of the energy spectra of protons and heavy nuclei cannot be described by a power function.

Abstract: The structure of silicon microstrip detectors with a great number of passive strips located between the readout (active) strips is described. Owing to the use of capacitive charge division among the passive and active strips, it is possible to essentially increase the readout pitch and to reduce the number of electronic readout channels by five to ten times. Since the cost of the front-end electronics exceeds significantly that of the detectors themselves, this method allows the cost of the entire detector-electronics system to be decreased severalfold without substantial deterioration of the position resolution.

7. Determining the position of an ionizing particle in a system of silicon microstrip detectors

Abstract: Essentially all aspects of determining the particle hit position by a combination of signals in adjacent readout channels are considered. Different methods for finding a cluster and discriminating between real clusters produced by incident particles and false clusters due to noise fluctuations are analyzed. The main algorithms for finding the particle position inside a cluster at different angles of incidence are described. A new algorithm that involves the angle of incidence, measured by the external tracking system or determined from the internal structure of a cluster, is proposed. By optimizing the methods for finding a cluster and the algorithms of its analysis, it is possible to improve the spatial resolution of the detector by 20–40%.

Abstract: The preliminary energy spectra of heavy nuclei C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe in the primary cosmic rays measured by the ATIC-2 experiment are presented and compared to previous data and to propagation models. Using previous data to extend the ATIC-2 results for all heavy nuclei to higher energy, the combined spectra can be best fit with diffusion model with weak reacceleration and scattering on random magnetic field with a Kolmogorov spectrum fluctuations becoming dominant at high energy. Abstract: The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) balloon-borne experiment is designed to perform cosmic-ray elemental spectra measurement from 50 GeV to 100 TeV for nuclei from hydrogen to iron. These measurements are expected to provide crucial hints about some of the most fundamental questions in astroparticle physics today. ATTIC'S design centers on an 18 radiation length (X(sub Omnicron)) deep bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter, preceded by a 0.75 lambda(sub int) graphite target. In September 1999 the ATIC detector was exposed to high-energy beams at CERN's SPS accelerator, within the framework of the development program for the Advanced Cosmic-ray Composition Experiment for the Space Station (ACCESS). In December 2000 - January 2001, ATIC flew on the first of a series of long duration balloon (LDB) flights from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We present here results from the 1999 beam-tests, including energy resolutions for electrons and protons at several beam energies from 100 GeV to 375 GeV, as well as signal linearity and collection efficiency estimates. We show how these results compare with expectations based on simulations, and their expected impacts on mission performance.

Abstract: We analyze the characteristics of the albedo, or the backscatter current, which constitutes a background for charge measurements in calorimetric experiments in high-energy cosmic rays. We compare the experimental data obtained in the flights of the ATIC spectrometer with the simulations performed using the GEANT 3.21 code. We discuss the influence of the backscatter on the charge resolution in the ATIC experiment.

Abstract: The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) was built for series of long- duration balloon flights in Antarctica. Its main goal is to measure energy spectra of cosmic ray nuclei from protons up to iron nuclei over a wide energy range from 30 GeV up to 100 TeV. The ATIC balloon experiment had its first, test flight that lasted for 16 days from 28 Dec 2000 to 13 Jan 2OO1 around the continent. The ATIC spectrometer consists of a fully active BGO calorimeter, scintillator hodoscopes and a silicon matrix. The silicon matrix, consisting of 4480 pixels, was used as a charge detector in the experiment. About 25 million cosmic ray events were detected during the flight. In the paper, the charge spectrum obtained with the silicon matrix is analyzed.

Abstract: Long Duration Balloon (LDB) scientific experiments, launched to circumnavigate the south pole over Antarctica, have particular advantages compared to Shuttle or other Low Earth Orbit (LEO) missions in terms of cost, weight, scientific “duty factor” and work force development. The Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) cosmic-ray astrophysics experiment is a good example of a university-based project that takes full advantage of current LDB capability. The ATIC experiment is currently being prepared for its first LDB science flight that will investigate the charge composition and energy spectra of primary cosmic-rays over the energy range from about 1010 to 1014 eV. The instrument is built around a fully active, Bismuth–Germanate (BGO) ionization calorimeter to measure the energy deposited by cascades formed by particles interacting in a thick carbon target. A highly segmented silicon matrix, located above the target, provides good incident charge resolution plus rejection of “backscattered” particles from the cascade. Trajectory reconstruction is based on the cascade profile in the BGO calorimeter, plus information from the three pairs of scintillator hodoscope layers in the target section above it. A full evaluation of the experiment was performed during a test flight occurring between 28 December 2000 and 13 January 2001 where ATIC was carried to an altitude of ∼37 km above Antarctica by a ∼850,000 m3 helium filled balloon for one circumnavigation of the continent. All systems behaved well, the detectors performed as expected, >43 GB of engineering and cosmic-ray event data were returned and these data are now undergoing preliminary data analysis. During the coming 2002–2003 Antarctica summer season, we are preparing for an ATIC science flight with ∼15 to 30 days of data collection in the near-space environment of Long Duration Balloon (LDB) float altitudes.

Abstract: A longstanding goal of cosmic ray research is to measure the elemental energy spectra of cosmic rays up to and through the "knee" (approx. equal to 3 x 10 (exp 15) eV. It is not currently feasible to achieve this goal with an ionization calorimeter because the mass required to be deployed in Earth orbit is very large (at least 50 tonnes). An alternative method will be presented. This is based on measuring the primary particle energy by determining the angular distribution of secondaries produced in a target layer using silicon microstrip detector technology. The proposed technique can be used over a wide range of energies (10 (exp 11)- 10 (exp 16) eV) and gives an energy resolution of 60% or better. Based on this technique, a design for a new lightweight instrument with a large aperture (KLEM) will be described.

Abstract: The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zb anti-b and Zc anti-c couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via semileptonic decays. Both the muon and electron identification algorithms take advantage of new multivariate techniques, incorporating for the first time information from the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Based on the 1993-95 SLD sample of 150,000 Z0 decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure: Ab = 0.910 ± 0.068(stat) ± 0.037(syst) Ac = 0.642 ± 0.110(stat) ± 0.063(syst).

Abstract: We present a direct measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A{sub b} in the Z{sup 0} to b anti-b coupling using a new technique to distinguish the b and anti-b quarks using charged kaons from B decays. The Z{sup 0} bosons are produced in e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at the SLC with longitudinally polarized electrons. b anti-b events are selected using a secondary vertex mass tag and A{sub b} is determined from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry. From the 1994-1995 data sample, selected from 100,000 hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, we obtain A{sub b} = 0.855 {+-} 0. 088{sub stat} {+-} 0.102{sub sys}.

Abstract: We have measured the $B$ hadron energy distribution in ${Z}^{0}$ decays using a sample of semileptonic $B$ decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The energy of each tagged $B$ hadron was reconstructed using information from the lepton and a partially reconstructed charm-decay vertex. We compared the scaled energy distribution with several models of heavy quark fragmentation. The average scaled energy of primary $B$ hadrons was found to be $〈{x}_{{E}_{B}}〉=0.716\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.022}^{+0.021}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Abstract: A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q 2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton ( γ ∗ p ) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10−6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10−5, corresponding to a range in the γ ∗ p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the tau neutrino helicity, hnu and the tau Michel parameters rho, eta, xi and the product delta xi. The analysis exploits the highly polarized SLC electron beam to extract these quantities directly from a measurement of the tau decay spectra, using the 1993-1995 SLD data sample of 4328 e+e- --> Z0 --> tau+tau- events. From the decays tau --> pi nu(tau) and tau --> rho nu(tau) we obtain a combined value hnu=-0.93+/-0.10+/-0.04. The leptonic decay channels yield combined values of rho=0.72+/-0.09+/-0.03, xi=1.05+/-0.35+/-0.04 and delta xi=0.88+/-0.27+/-0.04.

Abstract: We present evidence for leading particle production in hadronic decays of the Z{sup 0} boson to light-flavor jets. A polarized electron beam was used to tag quark and antiquark jets, and a vertex detector was employed to reject heavy-flavor events. Charged hadrons were identified with a Cherenkov ring imaging detector. In the quark jets, more high-momentum p, L, K{sup -}, and {bar K}{sup *0} were observed than their antiparticles, and vice versa for antiquark jets, providing direct evidence that the higher-momentum particles in jets are more likely to carry the primary quark or antiquark from the Z{sup 0} decay, and that s{bar s} production is suppressed in fragmentation. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e+e- collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.28 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). The luminosity-weighted average polarization of the SLC electron beam was (77.23+-0.52)%. Using a sample of 93,644 Z decays, we measure the pole-value of the asymmetry, ALR0, to be 0.1512+-0.0042(stat.)+-0.0011(syst.) which is equivalent to an effective weak mixing angle of sin**2(theta_eff)=0.23100+-0.00054(stat.)+-0.00014(syst.).

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the left-right charge asymmetry ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}$ in hadronic $Z$ boson decays. This was performed at ${E}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}91.27\mathrm{GeV}$ with the SLD at the SLAC Linear Collider with a polarized electron beam. Using 89 838 events we obtain ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.225\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.056\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.019$, which leads to a measurement of the electron left-right asymmetry parameter, ${A}_{e}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.162\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.041\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, and ${sin}^{2}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{W}^{\mathrm{eff}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.2297\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0052\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0018$. Also, the ${A}_{Q}^{\mathrm{obs}}$ measurement combined with the left-right cross section asymmetry determines ${A}_{e}$ independent of the value of the electron-beam polarization.

Abstract: Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+p ande−p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2 andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2 are found to be $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} = 30.3_{ - 4.2 - 2.6}^{ + 5.5 + 1.6} pb$ and $\sigma _{e^ - p \to \nu X} = 54.7_{ - 9.8 - 3.4}^{ + 15.9 + 2.8} pb$. Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, y andQ2. From the measured differential cross sectionsdσ/dQ2, theW boson mass is determined to be $M_W = 79_{ - 7 - 4}^{ + 8 + 4} GeV$. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} (Q^2 > 200 GeV^2 ; \eta _{\max }< 2.5) = 0.8_{ - 0.7}^{ + 1.8} \pm 0.1 pb$

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: Deep inelastic $e~-p$ scattering has been studied in both the charged-current (CC) and neutral-current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared, $Q~2$, between 400 GeV$~2$ and the kinematic limit of 87500 GeV$~2$ using the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections, $ d\sigma/dQ~2 $, are presented. For $Q~2 \simeq M_W~2$, where $M_W$ is the mass of the $W$ boson, the CC and NC cross sections have comparable magnitudes, demonstrating the equal strengths of the weak and electromagnetic interactions at high $Q~2$. The $Q~2$ dependence of the CC cross section determines the mass term in the CC propagator to be $M_{W} = 76 \pm 16 \pm 13$GeV.

Abstract: A strong anomaly in form of a wide peak in the energy range 300–800 GeV was discovered in the first measurements of the electron spectrum in the energy range from 20 GeV to 3 TeV by the balloon-borne experiment ATIC [1]. The experimental data processing and analysis of the electron spectrum with different criteria for selection of electrons completely independent of the results reported in [1] is employed in the present paper. New independent analysis generally confirms the results of [1] but shows that the spectrum in the region of the anomaly is represented by a number of narrow peaks. Measured spectrum is compared to the spectrum of [1] and to the spectrum of the Fermi/LAT experiment.

Abstract: A new approach to the measurement of high energy cosmic ray nuclei (E>1011 eV) is proposed. The method is based on measuring the primary particle energy by determining the angular distribution of secondaries produced in a target layer. The proposed technique can be used over a wide range of energies (1011–1016 eV) and gives an energy resolution of 60% or better. This approach is being utilized to design a new advanced instrument (KLEM) for future space station and satellite cosmic ray experiments. Due to its light weight and large aperture the newly developed instrument will allow a dramatically increased exposure factor and will enable the directly measured energy range in cosmic ray research to be extended up to and beyond 1016 eV. A reduced scale version of this new instrument (project TUS-M) has already been accepted for exposure in the Russian Segment of the International Space Station. Abstract: The structure of e+e- -> b bbar g events was studied using Z0 decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. Three-jet final states were selected and the CCD-based vertex detector was used to identify two of the jets as b or bbar. Distributions of the gluon energy and polar angle were measured over the full kinematic range for the first time, and compared with perturbative QCD predictions. The energy distribution is potentially sensitive to an anomalous b chromomagnetic moment kappa. We measured kappa to be consistent with zero and set the first limits on its value, -0.17 < kappa < 0.11 at 95% c.l.

Abstract: A new balloon instrument, the advanced thin ionization calorimeter (ATIC), is currently under development by an international collaboration involving researchers in the U.S., Germany, Korea, Russia and the Ukraine. The instrument will be used, in a series of long duration balloon flights, to investigate the charge composition and energy spectra of primary cosmic rays over the energy range from about 1010 to 1014 eV. The ATIC instrument is designed around a new technology, fully active Bismuth Germanate (BGO) ionization calorimeter that is used to measure the energy deposited by the cascades formed by particles interacting in an approximately 1 proton interaction length thick carbon target. The charge module comprises a highly segmented, triply redundant set of detectors (scintillator, silicon matrix and Cherenkov) that together give good incident charge resolution plus rejection of the 'backscattered' particles from the interaction. Trajectory information is obtained both from scintillator layers and from the cascade profile throughout the BGO calorimeter. This instrument is specifically designed to take advantage of the existing NASA long duration balloon flight capability in Antarctica and/or the Northern Hemisphere. Abstract: Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

Abstract: The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 4 figures appended

Abstract: Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σel νp, inelastic diffractive production, σnd νp, non-diffractive production, σd νp, as well as the total cross section, σtot νp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The resulting values are σel νp = 18 ± 7 μb, σd νp = 33 ± 8 μb, σnd νp = 91 ± 11 μb, and σtot νp 143 ± 17 μb, where the errors include statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel $D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ $ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The $e^+p$ cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with $5, Comment: 17 pages including 4 figures

Abstract: The photoproduction reaction γp → μ+ μ-p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 43.2pb-1. The Υ meson has been observed in photoproduction for the first time. The sum of the products of the elastic Υ(1S), Υ(2S),Υ(3S) photoproduction cross sections with their respective branching ratios is determined to be 13.3 ± 6.0(stat.)-2.3+2.7(syst.) pb at a mean photon-proton centre of mass energy of 120 GeV. The cross section is above the prediction of a perturbative QCD model. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (ϰγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed ϰγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved- as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section da/dβOBS increases as βOBS increases indicating that there is a sizeable contribution to dijet production from those events in which a large fraction of the pomeron momentum participates in the hard scattering. These cross sections and the ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function can be described by calculations based on parton densities in the pomeron which evolve according to the QCD evolution equations and include a substantial hard momentum component of gluons in the pomeron.

Abstract: New analysis to separate electrons from protons in the ATIC experiment has been performed. Five new discriminants were studied by different Monte Carlo programs. New electron spectrum, when compared with the published results [1], show good agreement in the most interesting region of energy (from 90 GeV to 600 GeV). It is argued that there is no disagreement between ATIC’s results and Fermi-LAT ones. Finally, high-resolution electron spectrum is obtained and possible fine structure is found out in it. The ATIC (Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter) balloon-borne spectrometer was designed to measure the energy spectra of elements from H to Fe with individual resolution of charges in primary cosmic rays for energy region from 50 GeV to 100 TeV. ATIC has had three successful flights around the South Pole in 2000–2001 (ATIC-1), 2002-2003 (ATIC-2) and 2007-2008 (ATIC-4). ATIC is comprised of a fully active bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter, a carbon target with embedded scintillator hodoscopes, and a silicon matrix that is used as the main charge detector. The calorimeter is comprised of 8 layers with 40 BGO crystalls in each for ATIC-1 and ATIC-2 and of 10 layers for ATIC-4. The details of the construction of the apparatus are described in the papers [2–4]. It was shown that it is possible also to measure the spectrum of cosmic ray electrons plus positrons [5] with ATIC (hereinafter we use ’electrons’ for brevity). To separate electrons from the higher background of protons and other nuclei some differences in shower development for incident electrons and for nuclei are used. The spectrum of electrons measured with the ATIC spectrometer by this method was published in the paper [1]. The most notable detail of the electron spectrum reported was an ‘excess’ of electrons between energies of 300–800 GeV. Abstract: We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel ${\rm D}^{*+}\rightarrow (\Do \rightarrow {\rm K}^-\pi^+)\pi^+$ (+ c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference $\Delta M$=$M$(D$^*$)--$M$(D$^0)$ as well as in the $M(K\pi)$ distribution at the D$^0$ mass are found.
