Gravitational-wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space-borne instrument dedicated to monitoring high-energy transients, including Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented a TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs and 2 special TEB-like events are identified during an effective observation time of $\sim$9 months. We show that, with gamma-ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify and distinguish TGFs and TEBs, and measure their temporal and spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF-lightning association rate of $\sim$80\% is obtained between GECAM and GLD360 in east Asia region., Comment: The paper was accepted by Geophysical Research Letters on June 16th, 2023

As the result of changes in ice dynamics and weather-driven changes on the surface, surface elevation changes over ice sheets are sensitive to climate forcing. Thus, long-term surface elevation changes over ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are of essential to assess the impact of climate change. Here, a dataset of monthly surface elevation time series over ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica at 5km grid resolution using ERS-1, ERS-2, Envisat, and CryoSat-2 radar altimeter observations from August 1991 to December 2020. An updated plane-fitting least-squares regression strategy and Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) reconstruction were applied to ensure the accuracy and self-consistency of the merged elevation time series in the data processing. In addition, the cross-comparison with the IceBridge airborne laser altimeter observations confirmed that our merged dataset is reliable. Benefiting from its high temporal and spatial resolutions, the evolution processes on multiple temporal (up to 30 years) of ice loss from the main outflow glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica can be derived in detail. The spatiotemporal patterns of accelerating or decelerating surface elevation changes over ice sheet related to ENSO (for the Antarctic Ice sheet) and NAO (for the Greenland Ice sheet) indicated that climate forcing shifts oceanic forcing or atmospheric forcing in some way to affect ice sheet changes. Inactivation of the tumor suppressor gene encoding the transcriptional regulator Ikaros (IKZF1) is a hallmark of BCR-ABL1+ precursor B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pre-B ALL). However, the mechanisms by which Ikaros functions as a tumor suppressor in pre-B ALL remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed a mouse model of BCR-ABL1+ pre-B ALL together with a new model of inducible expression of wild-type Ikaros in IKZF1 mutant human BCR-ABL1+ pre-B ALL. We performed integrated genome-wide chromatin and expression analyses and identified Ikaros target genes in mouse and human BCR-ABL1+ pre-B ALL, revealing novel conserved gene pathways associated with Ikaros tumor suppressor function. Notably, genetic depletion of different Ikaros targets, including CTNND1 and the early hematopoietic cell surface marker CD34, resulted in reduced leukemic growth. Our results suggest that Ikaros mediates tumor suppressor function by enforcing proper developmental stage-specific expression of multiple genes through chromatin compaction at its target genes.

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in the DC regime, which has been intensively researched, relies on the existence of symmetry-protected edge states. Here, we demonstrate that a QSH system behaves quite differently in response to an applied AC electric field, and put forward the idea of AC QSH effect. The AC QSH effect can occur in the bulk without involving the fragile edge states, hence being robust against time-reversal symmetry breaking and disorder. It lays a more solid foundation for practical applications of the two-dimensional topological insulators, in the emerging field of AC spintronics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Laser surface remelting/resolidifying treatment on a powder metallurgically manufactured Cu–Cr–Fe contact material was studied. Test results showed that a compact remelting/resolidifying layer was obtained with appropriate laser treatment conditions and a suitable surface absorption coating. After such treatment, the Cu–Cr–Fe microstructure was greatly refined and the Cr phase was uniformly dispersed in the Cu rich matrix with fine spherical or near spherical form. Improved compactness and microstructure of the laser remelted Cu–Cr–Fe material yielded increased hardness (by ~80%), wear resistance, and a reduced friction coefficient compared with the base material. The mechanism of laser strengthening is discussed in relation to the microstructural features of the Cu–Cr–Fe material.

The equation of state (EOS) of alloys at high pressures is generalized with the cluster expansion method. It is shown that this provides a more accurate description. The low temperature EOSs of Ni-Al alloys on FCC and BCC lattices are obtained with density functional calculations, and the results are in good agreement with experiments. The merits of the generalized EOS model are confirmed by comparison with the mixing model. In addition, the FCC phase diagram of the Ni-Al system is calculated by cluster variation method (CVM) with both spin-polarized and non-spin-polarized effective cluster interactions (ECI). The influence of magnetic energy on the phase stability is analyzed. A long-standing discrepancy between ab initio formation enthalpies and experimental data is addressed by defining a better reference state. This aids both evaluation of an ab initio phase diagram and understanding the thermodynamic behaviors of alloys and compounds. For the first time the high-pressure behavior of order-disorder transition is investigated by ab initio calculations. It is found that order-disorder temperatures follow the Simon melting equation. Low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) shows powerful advantages for the characterization of ambient particulate matter in environmental and geological applications. By the application of the low-Z particle EPMA single particle analysis, an overall examination of 1800 coarse and fine particles (aerodynamic diameters: 2.5–10 μm and 1.0–2.5 μm, respectively) in six samples collected on 28 April–1 May 2006 in the marine boundary layer (MBL) of the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea was conducted. Three samples (D1, D2, and D3) were collected along the Bohai Bay, Bohai Straits, and Yellow Sea near Korea during an Asian dust storm event while the other three samples (N3, N2, and N1) were collected on non-Asian dust (NAD) days. Based on X-ray spectral and secondary electron image data, 15 different types of particles were identified, in which soil-derived particles were encountered with the largest frequency, followed by (C, N, O)-rich droplets (likely the mixture of organic matter and NH4NO3), particles of marine origin, and carbonaceous, Fe-rich, fly ash, and (C, N, O, S)-rich droplet particles. Results show that during the Asian dust storm event relative abundances of the (C, N, O)-rich droplets and the nitrate-containing secondary soil-derived particles were markedly increased (on average by a factor of 4.5 and 2, respectively in PM2.5−10 fraction and by a factor of 1.9 and 1.5, respectively in PM1.0−2.5 fraction) in the MBL of the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, implying that Asian dust aerosols in springtime are an important carrier of gaseous inorganic nitrogen species, especially NOx (or HNO3) and NH3.

Interatomic potentials of uranium dioxide are investigated on their applicability to model structural stabilities beyond fluorite phase by comparing with ab-initio results. A high pressure cotunnite phase and loosely stacking virtual crystal are involved in order to get a primary confidence for large-scale deformation modelings of UO2 under irradiation damages. The behavior of Xe atoms in UO2 fuel is studied with molecular dynamics simulations. Besides the ground state bubble geometry, we find that a planar distribution is also (meta-) stable for xenon under thermodynamic perturbations. The Xe atoms with a planar configuration are in a liquid state at a typical reactor temperature of 1000 K, which presents a modulated layer-structure near the interface with solid UO2. A space-time symmetric and explicitly Lorentz covariant path integral formalism of relativistic quantum mechanics is proposed, which produces partial locally correlations of quantum processes of massive particles with the velocity of light at low energy limits. A superluminal correlation is also possible if anti-particles that moving along reverse time direction are excited. Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is a negative regulator of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway and a potent tumor suppressor in many types of cancer. To test a tumor suppressive role for PTEN in pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), we induced Cre-mediated deletion of Pten in mouse models of pre-B ALL. In contrast to its role as a tumor suppressor in other cancers, loss of one or both alleles of Pten caused rapid cell death of pre-B ALL cells and was sufficient to clear transplant recipient mice of leukemia. Small-molecule inhibition of PTEN in human pre-B ALL cells resulted in hyperactivation of AKT, activation of the p53 tumor suppressor cell cycle checkpoint and cell death. Loss of PTEN function in pre-B ALL cells was functionally equivalent to acute activation of autoreactive pre-B cell receptor signaling, which engaged a deletional checkpoint for the removal of autoreactive B cells. We propose that targeted inhibition of PTEN and hyperactivation of AKT triggers a checkpoint for the elimination of autoreactive B cells and represents a new strategy to overcome drug resistance in human ALL.

B-lymphoid transcription factors, such as PAX5 and IKZF1, are critical for early B-cell development, yet lesions of the genes encoding these transcription factors occur in over 80% of cases of pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The importance of these lesions in ALL has, until now, remained unclear. Here, by combining studies using chromatin immunoprecipitation with sequencing and RNA sequencing, we identify a novel B-lymphoid program for transcriptional repression of glucose and energy supply. Our metabolic analyses revealed that PAX5 and IKZF1 enforce a state of chronic energy deprivation, resulting in constitutive activation of the energy-stress sensor AMPK. Dominant-negative mutants of PAX5 and IKZF1, however, relieved this glucose and energy restriction. In a transgenic pre-B ALL mouse model, the heterozygous deletion of Pax5 increased glucose uptake and ATP levels by more than 25-fold. Reconstitution of PAX5 and IKZF1 in samples from patients with pre-B ALL restored a non-permissive state and induced energy crisis and cell death. A CRISPR/Cas9-based screen of PAX5 and IKZF1 transcriptional targets identified the products of NR3C1 (encoding the glucocorticoid receptor), TXNIP (encoding a glucose-feedback sensor) and CNR2 (encoding a cannabinoid receptor) as central effectors of B-lymphoid restriction of glucose and energy supply. Notably, transport-independent lipophilic methyl-conjugates of pyruvate and tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites bypassed the gatekeeper function of PAX5 and IKZF1 and readily enabled leukaemic transformation. Conversely, pharmacological TXNIP and CNR2 agonists and a small-molecule AMPK inhibitor strongly synergized with glucocorticoids, identifying TXNIP, CNR2 and AMPK as potential therapeutic targets. Furthermore, our results provide a mechanistic explanation for the empirical finding that glucocorticoids are effective in the treatment of B-lymphoid but not myeloid malignancies.
