Iron oxide-based nanostructures receive significant attention as an efficient adsorbent for organic dyes removal. The removal properties have strong dependency on the stoichiometry, phases, reactive edges, defect states etc present in the iron-oxides nanostructures. Herein, iron oxide/carbon composite with well-defined heterophased grain boundaries is synthesized by simple precipitation method and followed by calcination. The local structure, spin dynamics and magnetic properties of heterophased iron oxides/carbon composite are thoroughly investigated to explore its cationic and anionic dye removal capability. To validate the effectivity of the presence of heterogeneous grain boundaries, iron oxide/carbon nanocomposite with homogeneous grain boundaries is also examined. It was found that the hetero-phased iron oxide/carbon showed removal capacity of 35.45 mg g-1 and 45.84 mg g-1 for cationic (Crystal Violet) and anionic (Congo Red) dyes, respectively as compared to that of as-synthesised imidazole-capped superparamagnetic {\alpha}-Fe2O3 (25.11 mg g-1 and 40.44 mg g-1, respectively) and homophased iron oxide/carbon nanocomposite (9.41 mg g-1 and 5.43 mg g-1, respectively). The plausible mechanism on the local structural evolution of the heterophase in the course of calcination and increase of the removal capacity is discussed. A detailed dye adsorption investigation is presented including the adsorption kinetic study. The pseudo-second order kinetic model is found to be an appropriate one and suggests that the chemisorption is dominant factor leading to adsorption of dyes. Manipulation of long-range order in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials (e.g., CrI$_3$, CrSiTe$_3$ etc.), exfoliated in few-atomic layer, can be achieved via application of electric field, mechanical-constraint, interface engineering, or even by chemical substitution/doping. Usually, active surface oxidation due to the exposure in the ambient condition and hydrolysis in the presence of water/moisture causes degradation in magnetic nanosheets which, in turn, affects the nanoelectronic/spintronic device performance. Counterintuitively, our current study reveals that exposure to the air at ambient atmosphere results in advent of a stable nonlayered secondary ferromagnetic phase in the form of Cr$_2$Te$_3$ (T$_{C2}$ ~ 160 K) in the parent vdW magnetic semiconductor Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (T$_{C1}$ ~ 69 K). In addition, the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) enhances in the hybrid by an order from the weakly anisotropic pristine Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ crystal, increasing the stability of the FM ground state with time. Comparing with the freshly prepared Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, the coexistence of the two ferromagnetic phases in the time elapsed bulk crystal is confirmed through systematic investigation of crystal structure along with detailed dc/ac magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and magnetotransport measurement. To capture the concurrence of the two ferromagnetic phases in a single material, Ginzburg-Landau theory with two independent order parameters (as magnetization) with a coupling term can be introduced. In contrast to rather common poor environmental stability of the vdW magnets, our results open possibilities of finding air-stable novel materials having multiple magnetic phases.

Background & aimsThe IM-UNITI study and long-term extension (LTE) evaluated the long-term efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity of subcutaneous ustekinumab maintenance therapy in patients with Crohn's disease. Here, we report the final results of IM-UNITI LTE through 5 years.MethodsPatients completing safety and efficacy evaluations at week 44 of the maintenance study were eligible to participate in the LTE and continue the treatment they were receiving. Unblinding occurred after completion of maintenance study analyses (August 2015), and patients receiving placebo were discontinued from the study after unblinding. No dose adjustment occurred in the LTE. Efficacy assessments were conducted every 12 weeks until unblinding and at dosing visits thereafter through week 252. Serum ustekinumab concentrations and antidrug antibodies were evaluated through weeks 252 and 272, respectively.ResultsUsing an intent-to-treat analysis of all patients randomized to ustekinumab at maintenance baseline, 34.4% of patients in the every-8-weeks group and 28.7% in the every-12-weeks group were in clinical remission at week 252. Corresponding remission rates among patients who entered the LTE were 54.9% and 45.2%. Overall, adverse event rates (per 100 patient-years) from maintenance week 0 through the final visit generally were similar in the placebo and combined ustekinumab groups for all adverse events (440.3 vs 327.6), serious adverse events (19.3 vs 17.5), infections (99.8 vs 93.8), and serious infections (3.9 vs 3.4). Serum ustekinumab concentrations were maintained throughout the LTE. Antidrug antibodies occurred in 5.8% of patients who received ustekinumab during induction and maintenance and continued in the LTE.ConclusionsPatients receiving subcutaneous ustekinumab maintained clinical remission through 5 years. Under mechanical abuse conditions, the failure of lithium-ion batteries occurs in various stages characterized by different force, temperature and voltage response which require it's in-situ measurements for analysis. Firstly, four sizes of commercially available lithium-iron phosphate batteries (LFPB) viz. 18650, 22650, 26650, and 32650 are subjected to quasi static lateral, longitudinal compression, and nail penetration tests. The failure, characterized by the voltage drop and temperature rise, at the onset of the first internal short-circuit (ISC), is identified by Aurdino-based voltage sensor module and temperature measurement module, respectively. The battery failure load and peak temperature at the onset of ISC are found to rely on the battery size strongly. The failure is observed to be delayed for small-sized 18650 batteries during lateral compression, unlike longitudinal compression and nail penetration test. At the onset of the short circuit, the temperature rise above the ambient value is different for different LFPBs. It is found to be maximum (64.4 degree C ) for LFPB 32650 under longitudinal compression and minimum (29.5 degree C) under lateral compression tests amongst the considered geometries. Further, LFPB 26650 exhibited a balanced thermal behavior during the considered abused condition. The plasma deposition wall coated composite of ZnO and α-Fe2O3 (ZF-W) after exposure to ~ 2000 °C, mostly considered as waste-materials and cleaned out from the deposition unit, was subjected to anneal at 300, 500 and 1000 °C to manipulate the structural properties. An evolution of defect states along with the structural changes has been identified as annealing temperature was varied. As a consequence, an unstable state of ZnFe2O4 was found to be stabilized at 500 °C and migration of Zn from ZnO causes the phase transformation from the α-Fe2O3 to ZnFe2O4. While implemented for methyl blue adsorption/degradation without the effect of any external sources, the degradation for ZF-W annealed at 300 °C, 500 °C and 1000 °C were 84%, 68% and 82%, respectively. Compared to annealed structures, pristine ZF-W delivered the highest methyl blue adsorption efficiency of 86%. The changes in adsorption/degradation properties have been correlated with the simultaneous evolution of defects and structural properties of ZF-W as annealed at different temperatures. The plausible mechanism on the interaction of methyl blue with the composites on the adsorption/degradation is proposed. These findings give a clear indication on the importance of defects presence in the mixed metal oxide composite to obtain high-performance degradation/adsorption properties for sustainable wastewater treatment., 20 pages, 6 Figures

Vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNs) are the material of choice for next-generation electronic device applications. The growing demand for flexible devices in electronic industry brings in restriction on growth temperature of the material of interest. However, VGNs with better structural quality is usually achieved at high growth temperatures. The difficulty associated with the direct growth on flexible substrates can overcome by adopting an effective strategy of transferring the well grown VGNs onto arbitrary flexible substrates through soft chemistry route. Hence, we demonstrated a simple, inexpensive and scalable technique for the transfer of VGNs onto arbitrary substrates without disrupting its morphology and structural properties. After transfer, the morphology, chemical structure and electronic properties are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and four probe resistive methods, respectively. Associated characterization investigation indicates the retention of morphological, structural and electrical properties of transferred VGNs compared to as-grown one. Furthermore the storage capacity of the VGNs transferred onto flexible substrates is also examined. A very lower sheet resistance of 0.67 kOhm/sq. and excellent supercapacitance of 158 micro-Farrad/cm2 with 91.4% retention after 2000 cycles confirms the great prospective of this damage-free transfer approach of VGNs for flexible nanoelectronic device applications

Herein, an effort has given to sheds light on the effects of plasma process parameters on the growth of vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNs) by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD. The parameters include substrate temperature, microwave power and distance between plasma sources to substrate. The significant influence of these variable parameters is observed on the morphology, growth rate and crystallinity. Thus these parameters are found to be deciding factors, which determine the surface reaction and growth kinetics that governed the final structure and controlled morphology of VGNs. The activation energy of the VGNs grown by PECVD is found to be 0.57 eV. A direct evidence of vertical growth through the nanographitic island is observed from temperature dependent growth of VGNs. Such understanding on growth of VGNs is not only useful for growth mechanism under plasma chemistry but also beneficial to get controlled and desired structure for field emission and energy storage application.

Background: ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon for which current treatments are not universally effective. One additional treatment may be tofacitinib (CP-690,550), an oral inhibitor of Janus kinases 1, 2, and 3 with in vitro functional specificity for kinases 1 and 3 over kinase 2, which is expected to block signaling involving gamma chain-containing cytokines including interleukins 2, 4, 7, 9, 15, and 21. These cytokines are integral to lymphocyte activation, function, and proliferation. Methods: in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial, we evaluated the efficacy of tofacitinib in 194 adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive tofacitinib at a dose of 0.5 mg, 3 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg or placebo twice daily for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was a clinical response at 8 weeks, defined as an absolute decrease from baseline in the score on the Mayo scoring system for assessment of ulcerative colitis activity (possible score, 0 to 12, with higher scores indicating more severe disease) of 3 or more and a relative decrease from baseline of 30% or more with an accompanying decrease in the rectal bleeding subscore of 1 point or more or an absolute rectal bleeding subscore of 0 or 1. The aims of this Evidence-Based Guideline were to summarize available evidence and to provide practical recommendations regarding epidemiological aspects, prevention and drug-related risks of venous and arterial thrombotic events in patients with IBD. A virtual meeting took place in May 2020 involving 14 international IBD experts and 3 thrombosis experts from 12 countries. Proposed statements were voted upon in an anonymous manner. Agreement was defined as at least 75% of participants voting as 'fully agree' or 'mostly agree' with each statement. For each statement, the level of evidence was graded according to the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) grading system. Consensus was reached for 19 statements. Patients with IBD harbour an increased risk of venous and arterial thrombotic events. Thromboprophylaxis is indicated during hospitalization of any cause in patients with IBD. Disease activity is a modifiable risk factor in patients with IBD, and physicians should aim to achieve deep remission to reduce the risk. Exposure to steroids should be limited. Antitumour necrosis factor agents might be associated with a reduced risk of thrombotic events.

Background Ustekinumab is currently approved globally in Crohn’s disease (CD) and psoriatic diseases. Recent phase 3 data demonstrate safety/efficacy in ulcerative colitis (UC). Crohn’s disease and UC phase 3 programs had similar study designs, facilitating integrated safety analyses. Methods Data from 6 ustekinumab phase 2/3 CD and UC studies were pooled, and safety was evaluated through 1 year. Patients received 1 placebo or ustekinumab (generally 130 mg or ~6 mg/kg) intravenous induction, then subcutaneous (90 mg) maintenance every 8/12 weeks. Analyses incorporated all patients who received ≥1 ustekinumab dose. Safety outcomes are presented as percentages of patients (induction) and as number of patients with events per 100 patient-years of follow-up (through 1 year). For key safety events, 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are provided, as appropriate. Hazard ratios with 95% CIs from time-to-event analyses for serious adverse events and serious infections were also performed. Results Through 1 year, 2574 patients received ustekinumab (1733 patient-years of follow-up). The number of patients with adverse events per 100 patient-years (placebo 165.99 [95% CI, 155.81–176.67] vs ustekinumab 118.32 [95% CI, 113.25–123.55]), serious AEs (27.50 [95% CI, 23.45–32.04] vs 21.23 [95% CI, 19.12–23.51]), infections (80.31 [95% CI, 73.28–87.84] vs 64.32 [95% CI, 60.60–68.21]), serious infections (5.53 [95% CI, 3.81–7.77] vs 5.02 [95% CI, 4.02–6.19]), and malignancies excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer (0.17 [95% CI, 0.00–0.93] vs 0.40 [95% CI, 0.16–0.83]) were similar between placebo and ustekinumab. Conclusions The safety profile of ustekinumab across the pooled inflammatory bowel disease population through 1 year was favorable and generally comparable to placebo. These data are consistent with the established safety profile of ustekinumab across indications. ObjectiveManagement of acute severe UC (ASUC) during the novel COVID-19 pandemic presents significant dilemmas. We aimed to provide COVID-19-specific guidance using current British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines as a reference point.DesignWe convened a RAND appropriateness panel comprising 14 gastroenterologists and an IBD nurse consultant supplemented by surgical and COVID-19 experts. Panellists rated the appropriateness of interventions for ASUC in the context of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Median scores and disagreement index (DI) were calculated. Results were discussed at a moderated meeting prior to a second survey.ResultsPanellists recommended that patients with ASUC should be isolated throughout their hospital stay and should have a SARS-CoV-2 swab performed on admission. Patients with a positive swab should be discussed with COVID-19 specialists. As per BSG guidance, intravenous hydrocortisone was considered appropriate as initial management; only in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia was its use deemed uncertain. In patients requiring rescue therapy, infliximab with continuing steroids was recommended. Delaying colectomy because of COVID-19 was deemed inappropriate. Steroid tapering as per BSG guidance was deemed appropriate for all patients apart from those with COVID-19 pneumonia in whom a 4–6 week taper was preferred. Post-ASUC maintenance therapy was dependent on SARS-CoV-2 status but, in general, biologics were more likely to be deemed appropriate than azathioprine or tofacitinib. Panellists deemed prophylactic anticoagulation postdischarge to be appropriate in patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 swab.ConclusionWe have suggested COVID-19-specific adaptations to the BSG ASUC guideline using a RAND panel.

Fluorescence bioimaging potential, both in vitro and in vivo, of a yellow emissive triazole-based molecular marker has been investigated and demonstrated. Three different kinds of cells, viz Bacillus thuringiensis, Candida albicans, and Techoma stans pollen grains were used to investigate the intracellular zinc imaging potential of 1 (in vitro studies). Fluorescence imaging of translocation of zinc through the stem of small herb, Peperomia pellucida, having transparent stem proved in vivo bioimaging capability of 1. This approach will enable in screening cell permeability and biostability of a newly developed probe. Similarly, the current method for detection and localization of zinc in Gram seed sprouts could be an easy and potential alternative of the existing analytical methods to investigate the efficiency of various strategies applied for increasing zinc-content in cereal crops. Three TRIS-based molecular probes, L1 / L2 / L3 , were screened for their ability to detect Zn 2+ at nanomolar level. Keeping in mind the criteria for a molecular probe to be utilized as bioimaging material, L2 was chosen as model compound for biological studies due to its higher excitation/emission wavelengths. While investigating the potential of L2 , intracellular Zn 2+ was successfully imaged using fluorescence microscopy. As the fluorescence emission of L2 -Zn 2+ ensemble was stable for longer duration, more than 3 h, L2 was successfully utilized in in vivo imaging of Zn 2+ in a whole plant ( Peperomia pellucida ) in real-time. Further to its in vivo imaging capability, L2 was found to be successful in imaging zinc pool of gram seed sprouts.

Structure-interaction/fluorescence relationship studies led to the development of a small chemical library of Zn2+-specific cysteamine-based molecular probes. The probe L5 with higher excitation/emission wavelengths, which absorbs in the visible region and emits in the green, was chosen as a model imaging material for biological studies. After successful imaging of intracellular zinc in four different kinds of cells including living organisms, plant, and animal cells, in vivo imaging potential of L5 was evaluated using plant systems. In vivo imaging of translocation of zinc through the stem of a small herb with a transparent stem, Peperomia pellucida, confirmed the stability of L5 inside biological systems and the suitability of LS for real-time analysis. Similarly, fluorescence imaging of zinc in gram sprouts revealed the efficacy of the probe in the detection and localization of zinc in cereal crops. This imaging technique will help in knowing the efficiency of various techniques used for zinc enrichment of cereal crops. A benzo[h]chromene derivative, 2-amino-4-phenyl-4H-benzo[h]chromene-3-carbonitrile 1, has been utilized as ‘Turn On’ fluorescence chemosensor for the selective detection of Pb2+. The title compound 1 was synthesized in one step using a multicomponent condensation reaction (MCR), and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. The selectivity was tested over a range of 17 different metal and non-metal ions. Compound 1 was found to be weak fluorescent (Φ1=0.06) because of photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The presence of 2 equiv of Pb2+ showed a significant increase in fluorescence quantum yield ( Φ 1 − Pb 2 + =0.132). A change in weak blue emission of 1 to a glowing green emission along with a prominent red shift (26 nm) in emission band was observed upon addition of Pb2+ to a methanolic solution of 1. The complexation of 1 with Pb2+ was proved by mass spectroscopy and NMR studies. Some of our experimental findings have been supported by theoretical studies. Compound 1 was found to be easily permeable to living cells without causing any harm and ultimately was used to detect effectively Pb2+ in living system.

A benzophenone-based Schiff base 1 has been utilized as afluorescence chemosensor for the selective detection of Al3+. Theprobe was synthesized in one step, and found to be non-fluorescent due to a combination of photoinduced electrontransfer (PET), excited state intramolecular proton transfer(ESIPT) andE/Zisomerism. Upon addition of Al3+to a methanolicsolution of 1, the development of a strong fluorescence signalwas observed with an attractive glowing green emission. This wasdue to the inhibition of PET, ESIPT andE/Zisomerism, and theactivation of chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). The quan-tum yield of 1–Al3+was found to be 0.17. The selectivity wastested with 24 different metal and non-metal ions, and estab-lished using various spectroscopic tools. 2-Amino-6-methyl-4-phenyl-nicotinonitrile 1, a 2-aminopyridine-based fluorescent compound, was found to be a fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions over a number of other metal ions. Compound 1 was synthesized in one step using a multicomponent reaction, and characterized using common spectroscopic tools. During Fe3+/Hg2+ sensing the compound 1 followed a ‘switch-off’ mechanism. Further, compound 1 could sense Fe3+ over Hg2+ by its distinct absorption and fluorescence quenching behaviors. 1:1 complex formation of 1 with Fe3+ and Hg2+ was clearly understood from Job’s plot. The present work brings additional evidence on the importance of multicomponent reactions which could lead to the development of fluorescence chemosensor in one step for the selective detection of biologically important metal ions. Simple molecular structures capable of emitting over the entire visible range are still a challenge. Planar molecular structures have the drawback of fluorescence quenching in the solid state thus limiting their application fields. Combining long range excimer/exciplex emissions with a compound emission have been used to get white light. In this work, a series of new coumarin derivatives having a planar structure have been synthesized and characterized. The effects of systematic variation in alkyl chain functionalization providing morphological variations that permit interesting solid state emitting properties have been discussed simultaneously with electrochemical behavior and OLED (organic light emitting diode) device applications. Carbon chains containing 0–16 carbon atoms have been studied in order to conclude the results that systematic changes in alkyl group substitution can be utilized as a tool to tune the emitting color of these planar coumarins. Alkyl chains were introduced by O-acylation and O-benzoylation reaction on the hydroxyl group of parent coumarin 5. Thus the present strategy is also helpful in establishing a template to control the unproductive interchromophore electronic couplings. Solid state fluorescence properties support the crystal studies. Theoretical studies are also in agreement with experimental data. Electroluminescence of Device 2 with a turn on voltage (Von) around 5–6 V having s-CBP doped with 1% of 8 having alkyl substitution of 2-carbons is found to exhibit white emission with CIE co-ordinates of (0.29, 0.34) which is close to white emission while the alkyl substitution of 14-carbons (compound 17) in Device 7 (Von = 7 V) exhibited green emission. Thus a strategy helpful to tune the electroluminescence has been discussed. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
