Young protostellar discs are likely to be both self-gravitating, and to support grain growth to sizes where the particles decoupled from the gas. This combination could lead to short-wavelength fragmentation of the solid component in otherwise non-fragmenting gas discs, forming Earth-mass solid cores during the Class 0/I stages of Young Stellar Object evolution. We use three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of two-fluid discs, in the regime where the Stokes number of the particles St>1, to study how the formation of solid clumps depends on the disc-to-star mass ratio, the strength of gravitational instability, and the Stokes number. Gravitational instability of the simulated discs is sustained by local cooling. We find that the ability of the spiral structures to concentrate solids increases with the cooling time, and decreases with the Stokes number, while the relative dynamical temperature between gas and dust of the particles decreases with the cooling time and the disc-to-star mass ratio, and increases with the Stokes number. Dust collapse occurs in a subset of high disc mass simulations, yielding clumps whose mass is close to linear theory estimates, namely 1-10 Earth masses. Our results suggest that if planet formation occurs via this mechanism, the best conditions correspond to near the end of the self-gravitating phase, when the cooling time is long and the Stokes number close to unity., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages

Planet formation imprints signatures on the physical structures of disks. In this paper, we present high-resolution ($\sim$50 mas, 8 au) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of 1.3 mm dust continuum and CO line emission toward the disk around the M3.5 star 2MASS J04124068+2438157. The dust disk consists only of two narrow rings at radial distances of 0.47 and 0.78 arcsec ($\sim$70 and 116 au), with Gaussian $\sigma$ widths of 5.6 and 8.5 au, respectively. The width of the outer ring is smaller than the estimated pressure scale height by $\sim25\%$, suggesting dust trapping in a radial pressure bump. The dust disk size, set by the location of the outermost ring, is significantly larger (by $3\sigma$) than other disks with similar millimeter luminosity, which can be explained by an early formation of local pressure bump to stop radial drift of millimeter dust grains. After considering the disk's physical structure and accretion properties, we prefer planet--disk interaction over dead zone or photoevaporation models to explain the observed dust disk morphology. We carry out high-contrast imaging at $L'$ band using Keck/NIRC2 to search for potential young planets, but do not identify any source above $5\sigma$. Within the dust gap between the two rings, we reach a contrast level of $\sim$7 mag, constraining the possible planet below $\sim$2--4 $M_{\rm Jup}$. Analyses of the gap/ring properties suggest a $\sim$Saturn mass planet at $\sim$90 au is likely responsible for the formation of the outer ring, which can be potentially revealed with JWST., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. The stability of young planetary systems is strongly influenced by multiple factors, both internal and external. In this paper, we investigate the link between the environment in which young stars form and the possibility of having stable planetary systems around them. We analyze the robustness of such systems after an encounter with another star within the same stellar cluster. We employ a model for the star cluster to extract the encounter properties, such as the mass of the perturber star and its velocity. We perform numerical simulations on systems with a single planet perturbed by an external star, in order to calculate the emission probabilities of the planet. We also calculate analytically the stellar encounter rates in the cluster. We find that such probabilities are strongly dependent on the thermal velocity of the cluster. We also notice that these probabilities are generally quite small, below 3% for the systems tested by us.

A key problem in protoplanetary disc evolution is understanding the efficiency of dust radial drift. This process makes the observed dust disc sizes shrink on relatively short timescales, implying that discs started much larger than what we see now. In this paper we use an independent constraint, the gas radius (as probed by CO rotational emission), to test disc evolution models. In particular, we consider the ratio between the dust and gas radius, $R_{\rm CO}/R_{\rm dust}$. We model the time evolution of protoplanetary discs under the influence of viscous evolution, grain growth, and radial drift. Then, using the radiative transfer code RADMC with approximate chemistry, we compute the dust and gas radii of the models and investigate how $R_{\rm CO}/R_{\rm dust}$ evolves. Our main finding is that, for a broad range of values of disc mass, initial radius, and viscosity, $R_{\rm CO}/R_{\rm dust}$ becomes large (>5) after only a short time (, 17 pages, 14 figures

Many stars are in binaries or higher-order multiple stellar systems. Although in recent years a large number of binaries have been proven to host exoplanets, how planet formation proceeds in multiple stellar systems has not been studied much yet from the theoretical standpoint. In this paper we focus on the evolution of the dust grains in planet-forming discs in binaries. We take into account the dynamics of gas and dust in discs around each component of a binary system under the hypothesis that the evolution of the circumprimary and the circumsecondary discs is independent. It is known from previous studies that the secular evolution of the gas in binary discs is hastened due to the tidal interactions with their hosting stars. Here we prove that binarity affects dust dynamics too, possibly in a more dramatic way than the gas. In particular, the presence of a stellar companion significantly reduces the amount of solids retained in binary discs because of a faster, more efficient radial drift, ultimately shortening their lifetime. We prove that how rapidly discs disperse depends both on the binary separation, with discs in wider binaries living longer, and on the disc viscosity. Although the less-viscous discs lose high amounts of solids in the earliest stages of their evolution, they are dissipated slowly, while those with higher viscosities show an opposite behaviour. The faster radial migration of dust in binary discs has a striking impact on planet formation, which seems to be inhibited in this hostile environment, unless other disc substructures halt radial drift further in. Young multiple systems accrete most of their final mass in the first few Myr of their lifetime, during the protostellar and protoplanetary phases. Previous studies showed that in binary systems the majority of the accreted mass falls onto the lighter star, thus evolving to mass equalisation. However, young stellar systems often comprise more than two stars, which are expected to be in hierarchical configurations. Despite its astrophysical relevance, differential accretion in hierarchical systems remains to be understood. In this work, we investigate whether the accretion trends expected in binaries are valid for higher order multiples. We performed a set of 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of binaries and of hierarchical triples (HTs) embedded in an accretion disc, with the code Phantom. We identify for the first time accretion trends in HTs and their deviations compared to binaries. These deviations, due to the interaction of the small binary with the infalling material from the circum-triple disc, can be described with a semi-analytical prescription. Generally, the smaller binary of a HT accretes more mass than a single star of the same mass as the smaller binary. We found that in a HT, if the small binary is heavier than the third body, the standard differential accretion scenario (whereby the secondary accretes more of the mass) is hampered. Reciprocally, if the small binary is lighter than the third body, the standard differential accretion scenario is enhanced. In order to understand which mechanism is responsible for accretion in protoplanetary discs, a robust knowledge of the observed disc radius using gas tracers such as $^{12}$CO and other CO isotopologues is pivotal. Indeed, the two main theories proposed, viscous accretion and wind-driven accretion, predict different time evolution for the disc radii. In this Letter, we present an analytical solution for the evolution of the disc radii in viscously evolving protoplanetary discs using $^{12}$CO as a tracer, under the assumption that the $^{12}$CO radius is the radius where the surface density of the disc is equal to the threshold for CO photo-dissociation. We discuss the properties of the solution and the limits of its applicability as a simple numerical prescription to evaluate the observed disc radii of populations of discs. Our results suggest that, in addition to photo-dissociation, also freeze out plays an important role in setting the disc size. We find an effective reduction of the CO abundance by about two orders of magnitude at the location of CO photo-dissociation, which however should not be interpreted as the bulk abundance of CO in the disc. The use of our analytical solution will allow to compute disc sizes for large quantities of models without using expensive computational resources such as radiative transfer calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Binaries and multiple systems are common among young stars (Reipurth et al. 2014). These stars are often surrounded by discs of gas and dust, formed due to the conservation of angular momentum of the collapsing cloud, thought to be the site of planet formation.In the case of binary systems, three discs can form: an outer disc surrounding all the stars (called circumbinary disc), and two inner discs around the stars. As circumbinary planets have recently been discovered by Kepler (see e.g., Martin 2018, Bonavita & Desidera 2020), it is crucial to understand the dynamics and evolution of circumbinary discs to better understand the initial conditions of planet formation in multiple systems.The GG Tau A system is an example of a young multiple T Tauri star. The binary is surrounded by a bright disc, observed in the continuum emission at different wavelengths (see e.g., Guilloteau et al. 1999; Dutrey et al. 2014; Phuong et al. 2020b) and in scattered light (e.g., Duchene et al. 2014, Keppler et al. 2020). The disc extends in the dust from 180 to 280 au from the center of mass, and in the gas up to 850 au. The inner (Two different configurations are possible fitting the proper motion data for the system: a co-planar case with a low eccentricity binary with a semi-major axis of 34 au, explored by Cazzoletti et al. 2017 and Keppler et al. 2020, and a misaligned case (i=30) with an eccentric binary (e=0.45) and a wider semimajor axis of 60 au (Aly et al.2018). At the state of the art, all these analyses focused on the gas dynamics only.We will show the results of new 3D SPH simulations of dust and gas performed with the code PHANTOM, devised to test the two possible scenarios. We will describe the dynamics of the system in the two cases, comparing our models with observational results in order to better constraint the orbital parameter of the GG Tau A system. Our predictions will guide future observing campaigns and shed light on the complex evolution of discs in triple stellar systems.

Tidal encounters in star clusters perturb discs around young protostars. In Cuello et al. (2019a, Paper I) we detailed the dynamical signatures of a stellar flyby in both gas and dust. Flybys produce warped discs, spirals with evolving pitch angles, increasing accretion rates, and disc truncation. Here we present the corresponding observational signatures of these features in optical/near-infrared scattered light and (sub-) millimeter continuum and CO line emission. Using representative prograde and retrograde encounters for direct comparison, we post-process hydrodynamical simulations with radiative transfer methods to generate a catalogue of multi-wavelength observations. This provides a reference to identify flybys in recent near-infrared and sub-millimetre observations (e.g., RW Aur, AS 205, HV Tau & DO Tau, FU Ori, V2775 Ori, and Z CMa)., 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are among the brightest transients in the optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray sky. These flares are set into motion when a star is torn apart by the tidal field of a massive black hole, triggering a chain of events which is -- so far -- incompletely understood. However, the disruption process has been studied extensively for almost half a century, and unlike the later stages of a TDE, our understanding of the disruption itself is reasonably well converged. In this Chapter, we review both analytical and numerical models for stellar tidal disruption. Starting with relatively simple, order-of-magnitude physics, we review models of increasing sophistication, the semi-analytic ``affine formalism,'' hydrodynamic simulations of the disruption of polytropic stars, and the most recent hydrodynamic results concerning the disruption of realistic stellar models. Our review surveys the immediate aftermath of disruption in both typical and more unusual TDEs, exploring how the fate of the tidal debris changes if one considers non-main sequence stars, deeply penetrating tidal encounters, binary star systems, and sub-parabolic orbits. IRAS~04158+2805 has long been thought to be a very low mass T-Tauri star (VLMS) surrounded by a nearly edge-on, extremely large disc. Recent observations revealed that this source hosts a binary surrounded by an extended circumbinary disc with a central dust cavity. In this paper, we combine ALMA multi-wavelength observations of continuum and $^{12}$CO line emission, with H$\alpha$ imaging and Keck astrometric measures of the binary to develop a coherent dynamical model of this system. The system features an azimuthal asymmetry detected at the western edge of the cavity in Band~7 observations and a wiggling outflow. Dust emission in ALMA Band 4 from the proximity of the individual stars suggests the presence of marginally resolved circumstellar discs. We estimate the binary orbital parameters from the measured arc of the orbit from Keck and ALMA astrometry. We further constrain these estimates using considerations from binary-disc interaction theory. We finally perform three SPH gas + dust simulations based on the theoretical constraints; we post-process the hydrodynamic output using radiative transfer Monte Carlo methods and directly compare the models with observations. Our results suggest that a highly eccentric $e\sim 0.5\textrm{--}0.7$ equal mass binary, with a semi-major axis of $\sim 55$ au, and small/moderate orbital plane vs. circumbinary disc inclination $\theta\lesssim 30^\circ$ provides a good match with observations. A dust mass of $\sim 1.5\times 10^{-4} {\rm M_\odot}$ best reproduces the flux in Band 7 continuum observations. Recent multi-wavelength ALMA observations of the protoplanetary disk orbiting around Elias 2-27 revealed a two armed spiral structure. The observed morphology together with the young age of the star and the disk-to-star mass ratio estimated from dust continuum emission make this system a perfect laboratory to investigate the role of self-gravity in the early phases of star formation. This is particularly interesting if we consider that gravitational instabilities could be a fundamental first step for the formation of planetesimals and planets. In this Letter, we model the rotation curve obtained by CO data of Elias 2-27 with a theoretical rotation curve including both the disk self-gravity and the star contribution to the gravitational potential. We compare this model with a purely Keplerian one and with a simple power-law function. We find that (especially for the $^{13}$CO isotopologue) the rotation curve is better described by considering not only the star, but also the disk self-gravity. We are thus able to obtain for the first time a dynamical estimate of the disk mass of $0.08\pm0.04\,M_{\odot}$ and the star mass of $0.46\pm0.03\,M_{\odot}$ (in the more general case), the latter being comparable with previous estimates. From these values, we derive that the disk is 17$\%$ of the star mass, meaning that it could be prone to gravitational instabilities. It is likely that young protostellar disks undergo a self-gravitating phase. Such systems are characterized by the presence of a spiral pattern that can be either in a quasi-steady state or in a nonlinear unstable condition. This spiral wave affects both the gas dynamics and kinematics, resulting in deviations from the Keplerian rotation. Recently, a lot of attention has been devoted to kinematic studies of planet-forming environments, and we are now able to measure even small perturbations of velocity field ($\lesssim 1 \%$ of the Keplerian speed) thanks to high spatial and spectral resolution observations of protostellar disks. In this work, we investigate the kinematic signatures of gravitational instability: we perform an analytical study of the linear response of a self-gravitating disk to a spiral-like perturbation, focusing our attention on the velocity field perturbations. We show that unstable disks have clear kinematic imprints into the gas component across the entire disk extent, due to the GI spiral wave perturbation, resulting in deviations from Keplerian rotation. The shape of these signatures depends on several parameters, but they are significantly affected by the cooling factor: by detecting these features, we can put constraints on protoplanetary disk cooling., Comment: Accepted for publication in APJL, 13 pages, 4 figures

Accretion onto black holes is an efficient mechanism in converting the gas mass-energy into energetic outputs as radiation, wind and jet. Tidal disruption events, in which stars are tidally torn apart and then accreted onto supermassive black holes, offer unique opportunities of studying the accretion physics as well as the wind and jet launching physics across different accretion regimes. In this review, we systematically describe and discuss the models that have been developed to study the accretion flows and jets in tidal disruption events. A good knowledge of these physics is not only needed for understanding the emissions of the observed events, but also crucial for probing the general relativistic space-time around black holes and the demographics of supermassive black holes via tidal disruption events., Comment: Accepted for publication in Springer Space Science Reviews. We map the planetary wake associated with the embedded protoplanet creating the CO kink in the disk of HD~163296. We show that the wake can be traced by a series of correlated perturbations in the peak velocity map. The sign change of the perturbations across the disk major axis confirm that the wake induces predominantly radial motion, as predicted by models of planet-disk interaction. These results provide the first direct confirmation of planet wakes generated by Lindblad resonances. Mapping the wake provides a constraint on the disk aspect ratio, which is required to measure the mass of the planet., Comment: 10 Pages, 6 figures. Accepted in ApJL

New instruments such as the ALMA interferometer and SPHERE on VLT allowed to obtain a large number of high-resolution images of protoplanetary discs. In these images, substructures such as gaps and rings can be clearly resolved and appear to be very common (see eg. Andrews et al. 2018). A natural explanation for the origin of such structures is the dynamical interaction of the gas and dust in the disc with one or more planets embedded in the parental disc (e.g. Lin & Papaloizou 1979, Dipierro et al. 2015, Rosotti et al. 2017, ..). Detections of planets embedded in disks are rare (e.g. Quanz et al. 2013, Keppler et al. 2018) and are mostly related to giant planets at wide orbits. However, the observed structures can be due to the interaction between the disc and low-mass planets. Planet-disc interaction can be studied with a synergy between observational results, current theoretical model and numerical simulations. In particular, theoretical models can find “signatures” to spot the presence of planets in discs, such as dusty or gaseous features due to the presence of circumplanetary discs or accretion streams (Bae et al. 2019, Toci et al. 2020) to be compared with real observations (Isella et al. 2019). I will present an analysis of several 3D SPH numerical simulations devised to analyze planet-disc interaction in presence of two giant planets. I will then compare my results with two observed systems: (1) HD169142 (Fedele et al.2017, Perez et al. 2019), a well studied source with two prominent rings in dust and gas; (2) PDS 70, the first source where protoplanets have been directly observed (Keppler et al. 2018). We initialise the system containing two giant planets in the disc (hereafter planet b and planet c respectively), studying the initial conditions that lead to the formation of a cavity in the gas distribution and rings in the dust. I will present the results about the dynamics of these discs (gap width, ring size and shape, cavity shape) and the properties of the planets (Toci et al., ApJL 2020, Toci et al. 2020, in prep.). My results show that the presence of two giant planets in a 5:1 resonance can be responsible of a long-lived dust ring between them, while at the same time creating a large gas cavity. However, the dust ring is absent when the giant planets end up in a closer resonance (3:1 or 2:1). I will also show how important it is to consider the migration and the accretion of planets for modelling observational results. Indeed, the interaction between the planets and the disc can give signatures both in the dust and gas components, leading to detectable features. In particular, our results suggest that the spur in the observed 1.3 mm continuum images of Perez et al. 2019 can be due to the interaction between the inner giant and the inner dust ring (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). If so, the spur should move according to the orbital motion of the planet. This theoretical prediction will be testable in a few years with new ALMA observations. Similarly, in the case of PDS70, the structures observed in Keppler et al. 2018 and Isella et al. 2019 can be explained with an accretion stream from the disc to the planet and the presence of a dusty circumplanetary disc (see Fig. 3 and Fig. 4).

Recent high resolution and high fidelity observations of protoplanetary discs are showing us peculiar substructures such as spirals, gaps, rings and horseshoes. In particular recent surveys have shown that the majority of these discs are characterised by rings and gaps. What can we learn from these features? Are these discs hiding planets? I will present the results we have obtained in order to model one specific disc orbiting around DS Tau, an M-type star, in the Taurus star-forming region located at a distance of 159 pc. This disc is showing a wide gap (∼30 au) in the continuum at 1.3 mm (Long et al. 2018) and at 2.9 mm (Long et al. 2020) (left panels of Fig. 1). We performed 3D-hydrodynamical (PHANTOM, Price et al. 2018) and radiative transfer (MCFOST, Pinte et al. 2006, 2009) simulations in order to reproduce the observed gap shape at 1.3 mm. In this modeling, we assumed that the observed gap is carved by a planet between one and five Jupiter masses. We fit the shape of the radial intensity profile along the disc major axis varying the planet mass, the dust disc mass, and the evolution time of the system. In the central panels of Fig. 1 we show the synthetic images, that have been computed for our best fit model (performed on the 1.3 mm case) parameters: Mp=3.5 MJup, Mdust=9.6*10-5 Msun and t=145 orbits. The right panels compare radial cuts of the flux intensity profile along the disc major axis obtained from the synthetic image at 1.3 and 2.9 mm (top and bottom center panel of Fig. 1) with the ALMA data (top and bottom left panel). The left (blue) and right (red) side of the radial cut correspond to the left and right side of the disc major axis. Dot markers represent the data, while the models are in dashed lines. We also computed the CO-isotopologues channel maps for the best model fitting the dust continuum (see Fig. 2 for an example), in order to study the expected signature of the planet in the gas kinematics. We found that the planet mass fitting the ALMA image is 3.5 Mjup and that this planet would be able to produce a kink detectable by ALMA with a reasonable beam size and velocity resolution. Figure 1. A tidal disruption event (TDE) occurs when a star passes too close to a supermassive black hole and gets torn apart by its gravitational tidal field. After the disruption, the stellar debris form an expanding gaseous stream. The morphology and evolution of this stream is particularly interesting as it ultimately determines the observational properties of the event itself. In this work we perform 3D hydrodynamical simulations of the TDE of a star modelled as a polytropic sphere of index {\gamma} = 5/3, and study the gravitational stability of the resulting gas stream. We provide an analytical solution for the evolution of the stream in the bound, unbound and marginally bound case, that allows us to describe the stream properties and analyse the time-scales of the physical processes involved, applying a formalism developed in star formation context. Our results are that, when fragmentation occurs, it is fueled by the failure of pressure in supporting the gas against its self-gravity. We also show that a stability criterion that includes also the stream gas pressure proves to be far more accurate than one that only considers the black hole tidal forces, giving analytical predictions of the time evolution of the various forces associated to the stream. Our results point out that fragmentation occurs on timescales longer compared with the observational windows of these events and is thus not expected to give rise to significant observational features., Comment: 12 pages,15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

At the final stages of a supermassive black hole coalescence, the emission of gravitational waves will efficiently remove energy and angular momentum from the binary orbit, allowing the separation between the compact objects to shrink. In the scenario where a circumprimary disc is present, a squeezing phase will develop, in which the tidal interaction between the disc and the secondary black hole could push the gas inwards, enhancing the accretion rate on to the primary and producing what is known as an electromagnetic precursor. In this context, using 3D hydrodynamic simulations, we study how an adiabatic circumprimary accretion disc responds to the varying gravitational potential as the secondary falls onto the more massive object. We included a cooling prescription controlled by the parameter \beta = \Omega t_{cool}, which will determine how strong the final accretion rate is: a hotter disc is thicker, and the tidal interaction is suppressed for the gas outside the binary plane. Our main results are that for scenarios where the gas cannot cool fast enough (\beta>30) the disc becomes thick and renders the system invisible, while for \beta, Comment: to be published in MNRAS

We report the discovery of a low-mass stellar companion around the young Herbig Be star MWC 297. We performed multi-epoch high-contrast imaging in the near infrared (NIR) with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument. The companion is found at projected separation of 244.7$\pm$13.2 au and a position angle of 176.4$\pm$0.1 deg. The large separation supports formation via gravitational instability. From the spectrum, we estimate a mass of 0.1-0.5 M$_{\odot}$, the range conveying uncertainties in the extinction of the companion and in evolutionary models at young ages. The orbit coincides with a gap in the dust disk inferred from the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). This paper reports on a new analysis of archival ALMA $870\,\mu$m dust continuum observations. Along with the previously observed bright inner ring ($r \sim 20-40\,$au), two addition substructures are evident in the new continuum image: a wide dust gap, $r \sim 40-150\,$au, and a faint outer ring ranging from $r \sim 150\,$au to $r \sim 250\,$au and whose presence was formerly postulated in low-angular-resolution ALMA cycle 0 observations but never before observed. Notably, the dust emission of the outer ring is not homogeneous, and it shows two prominent azimuthal asymmetries that resemble an eccentric ring with eccentricity $e = 0.07 $. The characteristic double-ring dust structure of HD 100546 is likely produced by the interaction of the disk with multiple giant protoplanets. This paper includes new smoothed-particle-hydrodynamic simulations with two giant protoplanets, one inside of the inner dust cavity and one in the dust gap. The simulations qualitatively reproduce the observations, and the final masses and orbital distances of the two planets in the simulations are 3.1 $M_{J}$ at 15 au and 8.5 $M_{J}$ at 110 au, respectively. The massive outer protoplanet substantially perturbs the disk surface density distribution and gas dynamics, producing multiple spiral arms both inward and outward of its orbit. This can explain the observed perturbed gas dynamics inward of 100 au as revealed by ALMA observations of CO. Finally, the reduced dust surface density in the $\sim 40-150\,$au dust gap can nicely clarify the origin of the previously detected H$_2$O gas and ice emission., Comment: Accepted for publication

Spatially resolved observations of protoplanetary discs are revealing that their inner regions can be warped or broken from the outer disc. A few mechanisms are known to lead to such 3D structures; among them, the interaction with a stellar companion. We perform a 3D SPH simulation of a circumbinary disc misaligned by $60^\circ$ with respect to the binary orbital plane. The inner disc breaks from the outer regions, precessing as a rigid body, and leading to a complex evolution. As the inner disc precesses, the misalignment angle between the inner and outer discs varies by more than $100^\circ$. Different snapshots of the evolution are post-processed with a radiative transfer code, in order to produce observational diagnostics of the process. Even though the simulation was produced for the specific case of a circumbinary disc, most of the observational predictions hold for any disc hosting a precessing inner rim. Synthetic scattered light observations show strong azimuthal asymmetries, where the pattern depends strongly on the misalignment angle between inner and outer disc. The asymmetric illumination of the outer disc leads to azimuthal variations of the temperature structure, in particular in the upper layers, where the cooling time is short. These variations are reflected in asymmetric surface brightness maps of optically thick lines, as CO $J$=3-2. The kinematical information obtained from the gas lines is unique in determining the disc structure. The combination of scattered light images and (sub-)mm lines can distinguish between radial inflow and misaligned inner disc scenarios., 17 pages, 17 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) are a common feature between Active and Quiescent Galactic Nuclei; the study of these events is a very useful tool to probe phenomena that relate to the formation of an accretion disc or a jet. Also, the accretion rate at the beginning of the tidal flare is expected to be significantly super-Eddington and might result in high energy emission (in soft X-rays but sometimes up to the gamma regime, as in the the case of Swift J1644, see Komossa 2015). These events may even play an important role in the newborn field of the Multimessenger Astronomy. This work is set within this context. Indeed, it is a study of generation of Gravitational Waves (GWs) from the hot accreting torus resulting after a TDE. Since the torus has only formed recently, magnetic fields are not expected to be strong enough, so that the torus is likely to be unstable to the Papaloizou-Pringle Instability (PPI), producing a strongly varying mass quadrupole. Here, the study of the evolution of such tori is developed, using both analytical calculation and a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation (SPH). In particular the goal of this work is to determine the GW waveform and to compute the characteristic strain of these GWs in order to see if they are detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) are highly variable high energy phenomena originating from Galactic Nuclei (Komossa & Bade 1999). TDEs are thus powerful tools to study quiescent Galactic Nuclei given their extreme brightness (several times super-Eddington) and the possibility of being seen in non-AGN galaxies. A TDE is the violent disruption of a star passing by a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH); after the disruption, roughly half of the star mass gains enough energy to escape from the Black Hole, while the other half is bound to the Hole, falls back and eventually accretes onto it. Early works, (Rees 1988), pointed out a t−5/3 behaviour for the light curves of this event and since then such a time dependency became the signature of these events. Strong deviations are however introduced when one considers the internal stellar structure or if one considers partial disruptions. One feature that has never been taken into account is the effect of stellar rotation in the resulting fallback rate, which is the aim of the present work. Firstly, we will show analytical estimates of the impact of stellar rotation on the TDE and we will then present a set of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations of the tidal disruption of rotating stars, performed in order to test these analytical estimates.

Mergers are fundamental to the standard paradigm of galaxy evolution, and provide a natural formation mechanism for supermassive black hole binaries. The formation process of such a binary can have a direct impact on the rate at which stars are tidally disrupted by one or the other black hole, and the luminous signature of the tidal disruption itself can have distinct imprints of a binary companion. In this chapter we review our current understanding of the influence of black hole binarity on the properties of tidal disruption events. We discuss the rates of tidal disruption by supermassive black hole binaries, the impact of a second black hole on the fallback of debris and the formation of an accretion flow, and the prospects for detection of tidal disruption events by supermassive black hole binaries., 22 pages, 5 figures. ALMA has observed a plethora of ring-like structures in planet forming discs at distances of 10-100 au from their host star. Although several mechanisms have been invoked to explain the origin of such rings, a common explanation is that they trace new-born planets. Under the planetary hypothesis, a natural question is how to reconcile the apparently high frequency of gap-carving planets at 10-100 au with the paucity of Jupiter mass planets observed around main sequence stars at those separations. Here, we provide an analysis of the new-born planet population emerging from observations of gaps in discs, under the assumption that the observed gaps are due to planets. We use a simple estimate of the planet mass based on the gap morphology, and apply it to a sample of gaps recently obtained by us in a survey of Taurus with ALMA. We also include additional data from recent published surveys, thus analysing the largest gap sample to date, for a total of 48 gaps. The properties of the purported planets occupy a distinctively different region of parameter space with respect to the known exo-planet population, currently not accessible through planet finding methods. Thus, no discrepancy in the mass and radius distribution of the two populations can be claimed at this stage. We show that the mass of the inferred planets conforms to the theoretically expected trend for the minimum planet mass needed to carve a dust gap. Finally, we estimate the separation and mass of the putative planets after accounting for migration and accretion, for a range of evolutionary times, finding a good match with the distribution of cold Jupiters., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, re-submitted to MNRAS after referee's comments

The combination of high-resolution and sensitivity offered by ALMA is revolutionizing our understanding of protoplanetary discs, as their bulk gas and dust distributions can be studied independently. In this paper we present resolved ALMA observations of the continuum emission (λ = 1.3 mm) and CO isotopologues (12CO, 13CO, C18O, J = 2 - 1) integrated intensity from the disc around the nearby (d = 162 pc), intermediate-mass (M_{\star }=1.67 M_{\odot }) pre-main-sequence star CQ Tau. The data show an inner depression in continuum and in both 13CO and C18O emission. We employ a thermo-chemical model of the disc reproducing both continuum and gas radial intensity profiles, together with the disc spectral energy distribution. The models show that a gas inner cavity with size between 15 and 25 au is needed to reproduce the data with a density depletion factor between ~10-1 and ~10-3. The radial profile of the distinct cavity in the dust continuum is described by a Gaussian ring centred at R_dust=53 au and with a width of σ =13 au. Three-dimensional gas and dust numerical simulations of a disc with an embedded planet at a separation from the central star of {~ }20 au and with a mass of {~ } 6 - 9 M_Jup reproduce qualitatively the gas and dust profiles of the CQ Tau disc. However, a one-planet model appears not to be able to reproduce the dust Gaussian density profile predicted using the thermo-chemical modeling.

Proto-planetary disc surveys conducted with ALMA are measuring disc radii in multiple star forming regions. The disc radius is a fundamental quantity to diagnose whether discs undergo viscous spreading, discriminating between viscosity or angular momentum removal by winds as drivers of disc evolution. Observationally, however, the sub-mm continuum emission is dominated by the dust, which also drifts inwards, complicating the picture. In this paper we investigate, using theoretical models of dust grain growth and radial drift, how the radii of dusty viscous proto-planetary discs evolve with time. Despite the existence of a sharp outer edge in the dust distribution, we find that the radius enclosing most of the dust $\textit{mass}$ increases with time, closely following the evolution of the gas radius. This behaviour arises because, although dust initially grows and drifts rapidly onto the star, the residual dust retained on Myr timescales is relatively well coupled to the gas. Observing the expansion of the dust disc requires using definitions based on high fractions of the disc $\textit{flux}$ (e.g. 95 per cent) and very long integrations with ALMA, because the dust grains in the outer part of the disc are small and have a low sub-mm opacity. We show that existing surveys lack the sensitivity to detect viscous spreading. The disc radii they measure do not trace the mass radius or the sharp outer edge in the dust distribution, but the outer limit of where the grains have significant sub-mm opacity. The process of tidal disruption of stars by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) provides luminous UV and soft X-ray flares with peak luminosities of $\approx 10^{46}$ ergs/sec and duration of a few months. As part of a wider exploration of the effects of stellar rotation on the outcome of a TDE, we have performed hydrodynamical simulations of the disruption of a rotating star whose spin axis is opposite to the orbital axis. Such a retrograde rotation makes the star more resilient to tidal disruption, so that, even if its orbit reaches the formal tidal radius, it actually stays intact after the tidal encounter. However, the outer layers of the star are initially stripped away from the core, but then fall back onto the star itself, producing a newly formed accretion disc around the star. We estimate that the accretion rate onto the star would be strongly super-Eddington (for the star) and would result in an X-ray flare with luminosity of the order of $\approx 10^{40}$ ergs/sec and duration of a few months. In this paper we analyse giant gap-opening planet migration in protoplanetary discs, focusing on the type II migration regime. According to standard type II theory, planets migrate at the same rate as the gas in the disc, as they are coupled to the disc viscous evolution; however, recent studies questioned this paradigm, suggesting that planets migrate faster than the disc material. We study the problem through 2D long-time simulations of systems consistent with type II regime, using the hydrodynamical grid code FARGO3D. Even though our simulations confirm the presence of an initial phase characterised by fast migration, they also reveal that the migration velocity slows down and eventually reaches the theoretical prediction if we allow the system to evolve for enough time. We find the same tendency to evolve towards the theoretical predictions at later times when we analyse the mass flow through the gap and the torques acting on the planet. This transient is related to the initial conditions of our (and previous) simulations, and is due to the fact that the shape of the gap has to adjust to a new profile, once the planet is set into motion. Secondly, we test whether the type II theory expectation that giant planet migration is driven by viscosity is consistent with our simulation by comparing simulations with the same viscosity and different disc mass (or viceversa). In the past years, high angular resolution observations have revealed that circumstellar discs appear in a variety of shapes with diverse substructures being ubiquitous. This has given rise to the question of whether these substructures are triggered by planet-disc interactions. Besides direct imaging, one of the most promising methods to distinguish between different disc shaping mechanisms is to study the kinematics of the gas disc. In particular, the deviations of the rotation profile from Keplerian velocity can be used to probe perturbations in the gas pressure profile that may be caused by embedded planets. In this paper we aim to analyze the gas brightness temperature and kinematics of the transitional disc around the CQ Tau star in order to resolve and characterize substructure in the gas, caused by possible perturbers. For our analysis we use spatially resolved ALMA observations of 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J=2-1). We further extract robust line centroids for each channel map and fit a number of Keplerian disc models to the velocity field. The gas kinematics of the CQ Tau disc present non-Keplerian features, showing bent and twisted iso-velocity curves in 12CO and 13CO. Significant spiral structures are detected between 10-180 au in both the brightness temperature and the rotation velocity of 12CO after subtraction of an azimuthally symmetric model, which may be tracing planet-disc interactions with an embedded planet or low-mass companion. We identify three spirals, two in the brightness temperature and one in the velocity residuals, spanning a large azimuth and radial extent. The brightness temperature spirals are morphologically connected to spirals observed in NIR scattered light in the same disc, indicating a common origin. A large number of tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates have been observed recently, often differing in their observational features. Two classes appear to stand out: X-ray and optical TDEs, the latter featuring lower effective temperatures and luminosities. These differences can be explained if the radiation detected from the two categories of events originates from different locations. In practice, this location is set by the evolution of the debris stream around the black hole and by the energy dissipation associated with it. In this paper, we build an analytical model for the stream evolution, whose dynamics is determined by both magnetic stresses and shocks. Without magnetic stresses, the stream always circularizes. The ratio of the circularization timescale to the initial stream period is $t_{\rm ev}/t_{\rm min} = 8.3 (M_{\rm h}/10^6 M_{\odot})^{-5/3} \beta^{-3}$, where $M_{\rm h}$ is the black hole mass and $\beta$ is the penetration factor. If magnetic stresses are strong, they can lead to the stream ballistic accretion. The boundary between circularization and ballistic accretion corresponds to a critical magnetic stresses efficiency $v_{\rm A}/v_{\rm c} \approx 10^{-1}$, largely independent of $M_{\rm h}$ and $\beta$. However, the main effect of magnetic stresses is to accelerate the stream evolution by strengthening self-crossing shocks. Ballistic accretion therefore necessarily occurs on the stream dynamical timescale. The shock luminosity associated to energy dissipation is sub-Eddington but decays as $t^{-5/3}$ only for a slow stream evolution. Finally, we find that the stream thickness rapidly increases if the stream is unable to cool completely efficiently. [Abridged] Star and planet formation are the complex outcomes of gravitational collapse and angular momentum transport mediated by protostellar and protoplanetary disks. In this review we focus on the role of gravitational instability in this process. We begin with a brief overview of the observational evidence for massive disks that might be subject to gravitational instability, and then highlight the diverse ways in which the instability manifests itself in protostellar and protoplanetary disks: the generation of spiral arms, small scale turbulence-like density fluctuations, and fragmentation of the disk itself. We present the analytic theory that describes the linear growth phase of the instability, supplemented with a survey of numerical simulations that aim to capture the non-linear evolution. We emphasize the role of thermodynamics and large scale infall in controlling the outcome of the instability. Despite apparent controversies in the literature, we show a remarkable level of agreement between analytic predictions and numerical results. We highlight open questions related to (1) the development of a turbulent cascade in thin disks, and (2) the role of mode-mode coupling in setting the maximum angular momentum transport rate in thick disks., ARAA Chapter to be published in Fall 2016. 41 pages, 4 figures

We identify two distinct physical mechanisms for dust gap opening by embedded planets in protoplanetary discs based on the symmetry of the drag-induced motion around the planet: I) A mechanism where low mass planets, that do not disturb the gas, open gaps in dust by tidal torques assisted by drag in the inner disc, but resisted by drag in the outer disc; and II) The usual, drag assisted, mechanism where higher mass planets create pressure maxima in the gas disc which the drag torque then acts to evacuate further in the dust. The first mechanism produces gaps in dust but not gas, while the second produces partial or total gas gaps which are deeper in the dust phase. During the process of planet formation, the planet-discs interactions might excite (or damp) the orbital eccentricity of the planet. In this paper, we present two long ($t\sim 3\times 10^5$ orbits) numerical simulations: (a) one (with a relatively light disc, $M_{\rm d}/M_{\rm p}=0.2$) where the eccentricity initially stalls before growing at later times and (b) one (with a more massive disc, $M_{\rm d}/M_{\rm p}=0.65$) with fast growth and a late decrease of the eccentricity. We recover the well-known result that a more massive disc promotes a faster initial growth of the planet eccentricity. However, at late times the planet eccentricity decreases in the massive disc case, but increases in the light disc case. Both simulations show periodic eccentricity oscillations superimposed on a growing/decreasing trend and a rapid transition between fast and slow pericentre precession. The peculiar and contrasting evolution of the eccentricity of both planet and disc in the two simulations can be understood by invoking a simple toy model where the disc is treated as a second point-like gravitating body, subject to secular planet-planet interaction and eccentricity pumping/damping provided by the disc. We show how the counterintuitive result that the more massive simulation produces a lower planet eccentricity at late times can be understood in terms of the different ratios of the disc-to-planet angular momentum in the two simulations. In our interpretation, at late times the planet eccentricity can increase more in low-mass discs rather than in high-mass discs, contrary to previous claims in the literature., 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The field of planet formation has been transformed recently by the completion of high-resolution imaging techniques in the infrared (SPHERE) and mm-wavelength bands (ALMA) that allow us to obtain images at unprecedented high angular resolution of protostellar discs, that are the site of planet formation. At the same time, large planet-hunting campaigns have been carried out in the last decades, showing us the complexity and the diversity of exo-planetary systems. The architecture of planetary systems is shaped by a variety of mechanisms: from the hydrodynamical interactions between the various components of a protostellar disc (gas, dust, proto-planets), to the N-body interactions between newly formed planets. In this contribution, I will describe the efforts carried out at the University of Milan to understand the hydrodynamics of protostellar discs and how such dynamical mechanisms determine the structures observed with high-resolution imaging. This is done mostly by performing high-resolution numerical simulations of the coupled evolution of gas and dust around a newly born star.

The disc planet interaction and planetary formation in accretion discs have become a topic of renewed interest in the last decade, encouraged by the discovery of extra-solar planets, and in particular of hot Jupiters. Recent long-baseline ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) observations revealed a striking pattern of bright and dark rings in the protoplanetary disc surrounding the young star HL Tau. Our group has provided one of the earliest explanations of this system in terms of the interaction of the disc with three newly born planets (Dipierro et al, MNRAS 453, L73–L77, 2015) [6]. The aim of this study is to develop a new model for gas and dust distribution within this disc. This work is focused on identifying the mass of the planets able to carve gaps in HL Tau, in the three main ring-like structures observed by ALMA.

We describe a new implementation of the one-fluid method in the SPH code Phantom to simulate the dynamics of dust grains in gas protoplanetary discs. We revise and extend previously developed algorithms by computing the evolution of a new fluid quantity that produces a more accurate and numerically controlled evolution of the dust dynamics. Moreover, by limiting the stopping time of uncoupled grains that violate the assumptions of the terminal velocity approximation, we avoid fatal numerical errors in mass conservation. We test and validate our new algorithm by running 3D SPH simulations of a large range of disc models with tightly- and marginally-coupled grains., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The tidal forces close to massive black holes can rip apart stars that come too close to them. As the resulting stellar debris spirals toward the black hole, the debris heats up and emits x-rays. We report observations of a stable 131-second x-ray quasi-periodic oscillation from the tidal disruption event ASASSN-14li. Assuming the black hole mass indicated by host galaxy scaling relations, these observations imply that the periodicity originates from close to the event horizon and that the black hole is rapidly spinning. Our findings demonstrate that tidal disruption events can generate quasi-periodic oscillations that encode information about the physical properties of their black holes., United States. In this paper we discuss the influence of gravitational instabilities in massive protostellar discs on the dynamics of dust grains. Starting from a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation, we have computed the evolution of the dust in a quasi-static gas density structure typical of self-gravitating disc. For different grain size distributions we have investigated the capability of spiral arms to trap particles. We have run 3D radiative transfer simulations in order to construct maps of the expected emission at (sub-)millimetre and near-infrared wavelengths. Finally, we have simulated realistic observations of our disc models at (sub-)millimetre and near-infrared wavelengths as they may appear with the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) and the High-Contrast Coronographic Imager for Adaptive Optics (HiCIAO) in order to investigate whether there are observational signatures of the spiral structure. We find that the pressure inhomogeites induced by gravitational instabilities produce a non-negligible dynamical effect on centimetre sized particles leading to significant overdensities in spiral arms. We also find that the spiral structure is readily detectable by ALMA over a wide range of (sub-)millimetre wavelengths and by HiCIAO in near-infrared scattered light for non-face-on discs located in the Ophiucus star-forming region. In addition, we find clear spatial spectral index variations across the disc, revealing that the dust trapping produces a migration of large grains that can be potentially investigated through multi-wavelenghts observations in the (sub-)millimetric. Therefore, the spiral arms observed to date in protoplanetary disc might be interpreted as density waves induced by the development of gravitational instabilities., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Type-C QPOs in X-ray binaries have been often interpreted as a consequence of relativistic Lense-Thirring precession around a spinning black hole and they potentially offer a way to measure black hole spins and masses. The connection between relativistic precession and the resulting QPO has been made either in terms of a simplified model involving a single test particle producing the QPO, or in terms of a global model where a geometrically thick accretion flow precesses coherently as a rigid body. In this paper, we analyse similarities and differences between these two models, sometimes considered as in opposition to each other. We demonstrate that the former is the limiting case of the latter when the radial extent of the precessing flow is very small, and that solid lower limits to the black hole spin can be obtained by considering the test particle model alone. We also show that the global precession model naturally accounts for the range of frequencies observed for Type-C QPOs without the need to invoke a truncation of the inner accretion flow before it reaches the innermost stable circular orbit. Finally, we show that, in order to maintain rigid precession, the thick accretion flow should be radially narrow, and that if it extends beyond $10-10^2$ gravitational radii it aligns with the black hole spin too fast to produce a coherent QPO., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Black hole X-ray transients show a variety of state transitions during their outburst phases, characterized by changes in their spectral and timing properties. In particular, power density spectra (PDS) show quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) that can be related to the accretion regime of the source. We looked for type-C QPOs in the disc-dominated state (i.e. the high soft state) and in the ultra-luminous state in the RXTE archival data of 12 transient black hole X-ray binaries known to show QPOs during their outbursts. We detected 6 significant QPOs in the soft state that can be classified as type-C QPOs. Under the assumption that the accretion disc in disc-dominated states extends down or close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and that type-C QPOs would arise at the inner edge of the accretion flow, we use the relativistic precession model (RPM) to place constraints on the black hole spin. We were able to place lower limits on the spin value for all the 12 sources of our sample while we could place also an upper limit on the spin for 5 sources., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, we compare simple viscous diffusion models for the disc evolution with the results of recent surveys of the properties of young protoplanetary discs. We introduce the useful concept of `disc isochrones' in the accretion rate - disc mass plane and explore a set of Montecarlo realization of disc initial conditions. We find that such simple viscous models can provide a remarkable agreement with the available data in the Lupus star forming region, with the key requirement that the average viscous evolutionary timescale of the discs is comparable to the cluster age. Our models produce naturally a correlation between mass accretion rate and disc mass that is shallower than linear, contrary to previous results and in agreement with observations. We also predict that a linear correlation, with a tighter scatter, should be found for more evolved disc populations. Finally, we find that such viscous models can reproduce the observations in the Lupus region only in the assumption that the efficiency of angular momentum transport is a growing function of radius, thus putting interesting constraints on the nature of the microscopic processes that lead to disc accretion., Comment: 8 pages, 6 Figures, MNRAS, accepted

On 2011 August 11, INTEGRAL discovered the hard X-ray source IGR J17361-4441 near the centre of the globular cluster NGC 6388. Follow up observations with Chandra showed the position of the transient was inconsistent with the cluster dynamical centre, and thus not related to its possible intermediate mass black hole. The source showed a peculiar hard spectrum (Gamma \approx 0.8) and no evidence of QPOs, pulsations, type-I bursts, or radio emission. Based on its peak luminosity, IGR J17361-4441 was classified as a very faint X-ray transient, and most likely a low-mass X-ray binary. We re-analysed 200 days of Swift/XRT observations, covering the whole outburst of IGR J17361-4441 and find a t^{-5/3} trend evident in the light curve, and a thermal emission component that does not evolve significantly with time. We investigate whether this source could be a tidal disruption event, and for certain assumptions find an accretion efficiency epsilon \approx 3.5E-04 (M_{Ch}/M) consistent with a massive white dwarf, and a disrupted minor body mass M_{mb}=1.9E+27(M/M_{Ch}) g in the terrestrial-icy planet regime. These numbers yield an inner disc temperature of the order kT_{in} \approx 0.04 keV, consistent with the blackbody temperature of kT_{in} \approx 0.08 keV estimated by spectral fitting. Although the density of white dwarfs and the number of free-floating planets are uncertain, we estimate the rate of planetary tidal disruptions in NGC 6388 to be in the range 3E-06 to 3E-04 yr^{-1}. Using a novel method for speckle noise suppression from SPHERE-IFS data, we performed a systematic survey for disks in 22 Herbig Ae/Be stars, spatially resolving five disks and detecting seven new companion candidates. The fraction of sources with spatially resolved disks is systematically higher in the Meeus et al. (2001) group I sources, showing that disks are indeed more easily seen in scattered light in this sub-class of Herbig stars, consistent with the interpretation of group I sources having large gaps in their disks.

Rings are the most frequently revealed substructure in ALMA dust observations of protoplanetary disks, but their origin is still hotly debated. In this paper, we identify dust substructures in 12 disks and measure their properties to investigate how they form. This subsample of disks is selected from a high-resolution ($\sim0.12''$) ALMA 1.33 mm survey of 32 disks in the Taurus star-forming region, which was designed to cover a wide range of sub-mm brightness and to be unbiased to previously known substructures. While axisymmetric rings and gaps are common within our sample, spiral patterns and high contrast azimuthal asymmetries are not detected. Fits of disk models to the visibilities lead to estimates of the location and shape of gaps and rings, the flux in each disk component, and the size of the disk. The dust substructures occur across a wide range of stellar mass and disk brightness. Disks with multiple rings tend to be more massive and more extended. The correlation between gap locations and widths, the intensity contrast between rings and gaps, and the separations of rings and gaps could all be explained if most gaps are opened by low-mass planets (super-Earths and Neptunes) in the condition of low disk turbulence ($\alpha=10^{-4}$). The gap locations are not well correlated with the expected locations of CO and N$_2$ ice lines, so condensation fronts are unlikely to be a universal mechanism to create gaps and rings, though they may play a role in some cases., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepted

It has been recently proposed that giant protoplanets migrating inward through the disc more rapidly than they contract could be tidally disrupted when they fill their Roche lobes ~ 0.1 AU away from their parent protostars. Here we consider the process of mass and angular momentum exchange between the tidally disrupted planet and the surrounding disc in detail. We find that the planet's adiabatic mass-radius relation and its ability to open a deep gap in the disc determine whether the disruption proceeds as a sudden runaway or a balanced quasi-static process. In the latter case the planet feeds the inner disc through its Lagrangian L1 point like a secondary star in a stellar binary system. As the planet loses mass it gains specific angular momentum and normally migrates in the outward direction until the gap closes. Numerical experiments show that planet disruption outbursts are preceded by long "quiescent" periods during which the disc inward of the planet is empty. The hole in the disc is created when the planet opens a deep gap, letting the inner disc to drain onto the star while keeping the outer one stalled behind the planet. We find that the mass-losing planet embedded in a realistic protoplanetary disc spawns an extremely rich set of variability patterns. In a subset of parameter space, there is a limit cycle behaviour caused by non-linear interaction between the planet mass loss and the disc hydrogen ionisation instability. We suggest that tidal disruptions of young massive planets near their stars may be responsible for the observed variability of young accreting protostars such as FU Ori, EXor and T Tauri stars in general.

We investigate the evolution of the surface density of a circumbinary accretion disc after the mass loss induced by the merger of two supermassive black holes. We first introduce an analytical model, under the assumption of a disc composed of test particles, to derive the surface density evolution of the disc following the mass loss. The model predicts the formation of sharp density peaks in the disc; the model also allows us to compute the typical timescale for the formation of these peaks. To test and validate the model, we run numerical simulations of the process using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code PHANTOM, taking fluid effects into account. We find good agreement in the shape and position of the peaks between the model and the simulations. In a fluid disc, however, the epicyclic oscillations induced by the mass loss can dissipate, and only some of the predicted peaks form in the simulation. To quantify how fast this dissipation proceeds, we introduce an appropriate parameter, and we show that it is effective in explaining the differences between the analytical, collisionless model and a real fluid disc.
