Objective: Recently, a novel host‐related index, the Host‐index (H‐index), including both inflammatory and nutritional markers, has been described and observed to stratify prognosis in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity more accurately than other host‐related indexes This study aimed to investigate the prognostic performance of the H‐index using pretreatment blood tests in patients receiving up‐front surgery for SCC of the larynx. Methods: This retrospective observational study included a multicenter series of consecutive patients with SCC of the larynx diagnosed between 1 January 2009 and 31 July 2018, whose pretreatment blood tests were available and included the parameters necessary for the calculation of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the H‐index. Their association with disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) was measured. Results: A total of 231 patients were eligible for the present analysis (median [range] age, 68 [37‐96] years; 191 [82.7%] men). The median follow‐up was 73 months. In multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models, increasing age (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.07 per year; 95% CI, 1.04‐1.09), advanced pT stage (aHR = 1.71 95% CI: 1.07‐2.71), and having close or positive surgical margins (aHR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.21‐3.33) were significantly associated with poor OS. Among blood parameters, a higher neutrophil count was a strong predictor of both worse DFS (aHR for recurrence/death = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.24‐4.40) and OS (aHR for death = 2.67; 95% CI: 1.51‐4.71). Among inflammatory blood indexes, while NLR was not significantly associated with DFS or OS, patients with H‐index ≥8.37 showed a higher aHR for both recurrence/death (2.82; 95% CI: 1.65‐4.79) and death (2.22; 95% CI: 1.26‐3.89). Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study confirms the prognostic value of pretreatment H‐index, an easily measurable inflammatory and nutritional index, in patients with SCC of the larynx. International audience; This paper presents a descriptive study and scientometrics analysis to evaluate the incidence of the classification model of scientific journals Publindex in the behavior of Colombian journals in the area of Engineering and Technology. Qualitative and quantitative criteria were compiled, the production and contents of the journals were studied, and the national journals of the Engineering and Technology area were compared with the international journals of the same area. As a result, it is concluded that the implementation of the new categorization model served as a stimulus to boost the impact and improve the management of Colombian scientific journals in the study area. However, there is evidence of the need to implement models of editorial management and editorial policies (publication languages, periodicity, type of peer review, number of articles published, etc.) of international journals, and to rethink the classification model of scientific journals in Colombia incorporating guidelines that allow an objective evaluation based on the standardization and control of citation patterns.; En este artículo se presenta un estudio descriptivo y análisis cienciométrico para evaluar la incidencia del modelo de clasificación de revistas científicas de Publindex en el comportamiento del conjunto de revistas colombianas del área de Ingeniería y Tecnología. Se recopilaron criterios cualitativos y cuantitativos, se estudió la producción y contenidos de las revistas y se compararon las revistas nacionales del área de ingeniería y tecnología con las revistas internacionales de la misma área. Como resultado, se concluye que la implementación del nuevo modelo de categorización sirvió como estímulo para dinamizar la gestión e impacto, medido a través de indicadores de citación, de las revistas científicas colombianas del área de estudio. Sin embargo, se evidencia la necesidad de poner en práctica modelos de gestión editorial y políticas editoriales (idiomas de publicación, periodicidad, tipo de revisión, cantidad de artículos publicados, etc.) de revistas internacionales de referencia, y de replantear el modelo de clasificación de revistas científicas en Colombia incorporando directrices que permitan una evaluación objetiva a partir de la estandarización y control de patrones de citación.

SummaryObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between biomedical researchers' collaborative and authorship practices and scientific success.DesignLongitudinal quantitative analysis of individual researchers' careers over a nine-year period.SettingA leading biomedical research institution in the United Kingdom.ParticipantsFive hundred and twenty-five biomedical researchers who were in employment on 31 December 2009.Main outcome measuresWe constructed the co-authorship network in which nodes are the researchers, and links are established between any two researchers if they co-authored one or more articles. For each researcher, we recorded the position held in the co-authorship network and in the bylines of all articles published in each three-year interval and calculated the number of citations these articles accrued until January 2013. We estimated maximum likelihood negative binomial panel regression models.ResultsOur analysis suggests that collaboration sustained success, yet excessive co-authorship did not. Last positions in non-alphabetised bylines were beneficial for higher academic ranks but not for junior ones. A professor could witness a 20.57% increase in the expected citation count if last-listed non-alphabetically in one additional publication; yet, a lecturer suffered from a 13.04% reduction. First positions in alphabetised bylines were positively associated with performance for junior academics only. A lecturer could experience a 8.78% increase in the expected citation count if first-listed alphabetically in one additional publication. While junior researchers amplified success when brokering among otherwise disconnected collaborators, senior researchers prospered from socially cohesive networks, rich in third-party relationships.ConclusionsThese results help biomedical scientists shape successful careers and research institutions develop effective assessment and recruitment policies that will ultimately sustain the quality of biomedical research and patient care.

The present study attempts to highlight the research output generated in Russia in coronary artery disease (CAD) research during the period 1990-2019 to understand the distribution of research output, top journals for publications, and most prolific authors, authorship pattern, and citation pattern. This study is based on secondary data extracted from the Science Citation Index (SCI), which is an integral component of the Web of Science. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were applied in the study. There were 5058 articles by Russian scholars in coronary artery disease during 1990-2019; they preferred to publish in Russian journals. The research contributions were in the form of research articles, meeting abstracts and reviews with a consistent drop in the number of editorial material and article; proceedings paper with time. Co-authorship was the norm in coronary artery disease research, with a steady increase in the number of multi-author documents in recent years.

The results indicate that highest growth rate of publications occurred between the years 1995-1999. University Sao Paulo topped the scene among all institutes. The maximum publications were more than ten authored publications. Ramires JAF and Santos RD were found to be the most prolific authors. It is also found that most of the prolific authors (by number of publications) do not emerge in highly cited publications’ list. CAD researchers mostly preferred using article publications to communicate their findings.

The study mainly focus on distribution of research output, top journals for publications, most prolific authors, authorship pattern, and citations pattern on Alopecia Areata Disease. The results indicate that highest growth rate of publications occurred during the year 2019. Columbia University topped the scene among all institutes. The maximum publications were more than four authored publications. Christiano AM and Clynes R were found to be the most prolific authors. It is also found that most of the prolific authors (by number of publications) do appear in highly cited publications’ list. Alopecia Areata Disease researchers mostly preferred using article publications to communicate their findings.

Objective The Hirsch Index (h-index) and m-index are often utilized to assess academic productivity and have been widely found to have a positive association with academic promotion and grant selection. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between these indices and academic ranks among Canadian orthopaedic surgery faculty members. Methods Five hundred and sixty-seven Canadian orthopaedic surgery faculty members associated with residency training programs were included in the study. H-indices of individual faculty members were obtained through Elsevier’s Scopus database. Faculty members’ year of residency graduation was recorded from their respective licensing body database and was utilized as a surrogate for the start of their academic career to determine career duration and calculate the m-index. Faculty members were divided based on their academic rank (assistant, associate and full professors) and subspecialty. Results Increased h-index, m-index and long career duration were associated with increased academic rank, while gender did not demonstrate an association. Overall, males had a significantly higher h-index compared to females, but no significant difference was observed when comparing the m-index between genders. The m-index varied between subspecialties among senior faculty, but not among junior-ranked faculty. Conclusion Bibliometric academic productivity using h-index and m-index is associated with academic ranking among Canadian orthopaedic surgeons at training institutions. Although these indices may provide insight into the academic merits of faculty members, caution must be taken about utilizing it indiscriminately and their limitations must be strongly considered.

The classification of scientific journals is of vital interest for the academic community. The aim of this article is to compare the number of publications and citations in Arts and Humanities, in their different areas of knowledge, in Latin American countries according to the report by Scimago Journal and Country Rank, between 1996 and 2018. In the study several statistical techniques were used: cluster analysis, main components and MANOVA. As a result, differences between countries were detected in relation to the number of publications and citations, where Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Colombia are the ones with the highest academic production, while Suriname, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras and Paraguay have the lowest. It is concluded that there is a large gap between the nations of Latin America on statistics associated with publications in the area under study. La clasificación de las revistas científicas es de vital interés en la comunidad académica, por lo que se tuvo como objetivo comparar el número de publicaciones y citaciones en Artes y Humanidades en sus distintas áreas del conocimiento, en los países de Latinoamérica, de acuerdo con el reporte efectuado por Scimago Journal and Country Rank, entre los años 1996 a 2018. En el estudio se emplearon las técnicas estadísticas: análisis de clúster, componentes principales y MANOVA. Como resultado, se destacan diferencias entre países en lo relacionado con el número de publicaciones y citaciones, donde Brasil, México, Argentina, Chile y Colombia son los de mayor producción académica, y Surinam, Guyana, Haití, Honduras y Paraguay los de menor producción. Se concluye que existe una gran brecha entre las naciones de Latinoamérica en las estadísticas asociadas con las publicaciones en el área objeto de estudio.

Hemolysis frequently causes preanalytical errors in laboratory measurements. We aimed to develop a quality improvement indicator for evaluating the extent of inappropriate procedures causing hemolysis in clinical samples collected in medical care units. We defined the threshold value of the hemolysis index (H index) causing significant interference with analyte measurement and analyzed the H index values of clinical samples in relation to the threshold. The H index threshold value causing a 10% bias in the measurement of lactate dehydrogenase was found to be 25. The monthly mean H index and monthly frequency of samples with an H index >25 were significantly different among the types of ward (P=0.001, respectively), and significantly decreased after replacement of a laboratory centrifuge lacking temperature control (20.6±0.58 vs 23.30±1.08, P=0.01; 23.4±1.69% vs 32.6±1.78%, P=0.01). The monthly mean H index and the monthly frequency of samples with an H index above a threshold value may be useful quality improvement indicators for detection of inappropriate procedures in the acquisition and handling of blood samples in medical care units.

Background: Research productivity is considered an important factor in academic advancement in sports medicine. No study to date has evaluated academic productivity and correlates of academic rank for sports medicine fellowship faculty. Purpose: To describe the academic productivity of American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) fellowship program faculty and to determine the association between academic productivity, fellowship characteristics, and academic rank. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: Characteristics of orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship programs were obtained from the AOSSM and program websites. Metrics of academic productivity (Hirsch index [ h index], I-10 index, publications, citations, and number of publications in several journals) were obtained from Scopus. Statistical analyses were conducted to determine whether academic productivity differs with fellowship attributes and academic rank. Results: A total of 90 AOSSM sports medicine fellowship programs with 610 associated faculty members were identified. Faculty were predominantly male (94%), at academic medical centers (74%), members of AOSSM (71%), and sports medicine–fellowship trained (84%). Faculty had a median of 18 (range, 0-684) publications overall, including a median of 3 (range, 0-161) publications since 2012. All measures of academic productivity were significantly higher among faculty employed at academic medical centers compared with those not employed at academic centers ( P < .05 in all cases). On multivariate ordinal regression analysis, the best correlates of higher academic rank were higher cumulative h index (1.22; P < .001) and longer time in practice since fellowship (1.14; P < .001), which predicted 63.8% of the variance in academic rank. Fellowships with a larger number of fellows had more publications and citations per faculty member, higher faculty cumulative h index, and more publications in the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy per faculty member ( P < .017). Regional differences were present, with the Northeast fellowship faculty the most productive, followed by the Midwest. Conclusion: Higher cumulative h index and more years in practice were the best correlates of higher academic rank among AOSSM sports medicine fellowship faculty. Research productivity was higher among faculty employed at academic centers in the Northeast and Midwest regions and at programs with a larger number of fellows.

In this study, I developed operational versions of Hirsch’s H index that can be applied to each researcher’s curriculum vitae (CV) to allow cross-disciplinary comparisons. The revised indices account for anomalies that potentially arise from tactical or opportunistic citation and publication behaviours by authors and editors, and can be calculated from readily available information. I split the original H index into nested indices to isolate networking activity, distinguish scientific production and productivity, and used nested Gini indices to identify intentional and successful inter-topical and inter-disciplinary research. I applied the most popular normalisations (i.e., per author and per year) using simple methodologies (i.e., least-squares linear and cubic interpolation fitting, whole-career vs. sub-periods, two-dimensional graphs) to solve empirical problems (e.g., sensitivity to citations, the “fashion” effect, attribution to disciplines, life cycle of articles) as well as open questions (e.g., the attribution of an article to a given discipline) associated with the original H index. I provided three numerical examples based on a representative heterodox, a representative orthodox multi-disciplinary, and a representative orthodox uni-disciplinary CV: the first CV includes 17 Scopus publications, and shows a highly heterodox (i.e., 5.8%), but no interdisciplinary research career, with a tiny networking component (i.e., 0.9%); the second CV includes 24 Scopus publications, and shows a slightly heterodox (i.e., 0.3%), but highly interdisciplinary (i.e., 53.9%) research career, with a small networking component (i.e., 14.3%); the third CV includes 16 Scopus publications, and shows slightly heterodox (i.e., 0.1%) and no interdisciplinary research career, with no networking component.

The Impact factor (IF) is one popular tool which analyses the quality of journal in terms of citations received by its published articles. It is usually assumed that journals with high IF carry meaningful, prominent, and quality research. Since IF does not assess a single contribution but the whole journal, the evaluation of research authors should not be influenced by the IF of the journal. The h index, g index, m quotient, c index are some other alternatives to judge the quality of an author. These address the shortcomings of IF viz. number of citations received by an author, active years of publication, length of academic career and citations received for recent articles. Quality being the most desirable aspect for evaluating an author's work over the active research phase, various indices has attempted to accommodate different possible variables. However, each index has its own merits and demerits. We review the available indices, find the fallacies and to correct these, hereby propose the Original Research Performance Index (ORPI) for evaluation of an author's original work which can also take care of the bias arising because of self-citations, gift authorship, inactive phase of research, and length of non-productive period in research.

This paper addresses the problem of investigating long-range dependence (LRD) and self-similarity in Web traffic. Popular techniques for estimating the intensity of LRD via the Hurst parameter are presented. Using a set of traces of a popular e-commerce site, the presence and the nature of LRD in Web traffic is examined. Our results confirm the self-similar nature of traffic at a Web server input, however the resulting estimates of the Hurst parameter vary depending on the trace and the technique used.

Para ello, recuperaremos desde el Web of Science todos los trabajos publicados en las revistas internacionales indexadas en la categoría de trabajo social del Journal Citation Report entre los años 2010-2015. Entonces, analizamos mediante técnicas de mapas de ciencia el contenido de los trabajos e identificamos los temas de investigación más relevantes, los temas emergentes, los temas en decadencia y temas periféricos., The objective of this work is to analyse the latest international research carried out in social work according to the works published in journals from the field. This analysis is based on the internationally renowned literature databases published by Thomson Reuters, Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. To perform the analysis, we used Web of Science to obtain all the works published in indexed international journals in the social work category of the Journal Citation Report between 2010 and 2015. This work discusses the proposals of Gangan Prathap and András Schubert with the aim of using the Hirsch index as a basis for the calculation of a successive series of H indices. The most recent applications of H indices in institutional assessments at micro level and for assessing institutional impact on knowledge domains are discussed. The use of successive H indices offers a holistic view of the behaviour of the research staff of institutions and its impact on the international scientific community. The use of these indices should therefore be contemplated in institutional assessment policies.El presente trabajo discute las propuestas elaboradas por Gangan Prathap y András Schubert con el objetivo de utilizar el índice Hirsch como base para el cálculo de una serie sucesiva de índices H. Se presentan las más recientes aplicaciones de estos índices, tanto para la evaluación institucional a nivel micro, como para evaluar el impacto institucional en dominios del conocimiento. El empleo de índices H sucesivos ofrece una visión integral del comportamiento de los claustros que integran las instituciones dedicadas a la investigación y su impacto sobre la comunidad científica internacional, por lo que podrían tenerse en cuenta en las políticas de evaluación institucional.

It is almost dogmatic that sponges are one of the most relevant groups in ben-thic marine communities, a statement generally based upon their diversity andabundance in natural communities. But beyond their conspicuousness, do wereally know the role that sponges play in nature? Using a series of productivityindicators, this review evaluates the relevance of sponge research to the generalscientific community, particularly the contribution of sponge ecology to thebroader science of ecology. The relevance of sponge research ranked secondout of eight taxonomic groups. Ecology accounted for most of the spongeresearch output but it ranked poorly compared to the relative importance ofthe ecological literature in the remaining taxonomic groups. Sponge ecologyfocused primarily on the species level of organization even though the rele-vance of these studies fell well below expected. This review suggests that theecological relevance of sponges is insufficiently supported by ecological dataand would benefit from better scientific support. Sponge ecology has theopportunity to contribute to the broader science of ecology in numerous topicswhere sponge research may be particularly relevant. Broader ecological contri-butions will help verify the ecological relevance that the great diversity andabundance of sponges suggest.

Due to the effect of citation impact on The Higher Education (THE) world university ranking system, most of the researchers are looking for some helpful techniques to increase their citation record. This paper by reviewing the relevant articles extracts 33 different ways for increasing the citations possibilities. The results show that the article visibility has tended to receive more download and citations. This is probably the first study to collect over 30 different ways to improve the citation record. Further study is needed to explore and expand these techniques in specific fields of study in order to make the results more precisely.

The future of scientific journals in Latin America is uncertain. The inability to calculate bibliometric indicators to classify and homologate journals according to globally-used quartiles reduces journal visibility. For instance, Colombian journals classified in the National Bibliographic Database Publindex (BBNP) under categories A1, A2, B and C, have low rates of indexing in international databases, such as Web of Science or Scopus, thus limiting the estimation of bibliometric indicators for comparison at an international level. In this case study, articles published between 2003 and 2007 were taken from 211 journals selected from the BBNP- 2008. Using Google Scholar, Publish or Perish software and the Scopus database, impact and productivity indicators were quantified and compared creating a regional ranking (Q1-Q4). They were subsequently homologated internationally with the Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR). The h index proved the best indicator to generate the ranking of 170 Colombian journals based on quartiles (Q1-Q4) able to be homologated with SJR quartiles. We propose this methodology for classifying and homologating Latin American journals that are not indexed internationally, as a useful tool for publishers, publishing houses, information agencies and public policy decision-makers concerning education, science and technology, both regionally and globally. El futuro de las revistas científicas en Latinoamérica es incierto. La incapacidad de calcular indicadores bibliométricos útiles para clasificarlas y homologarlas con cuartiles de referencia mundial reducen su visibilidad. Por ejemplo, las revistas colombianas clasificadas en la Base Bibliográfica Nacional Publindex (BBNP) bajo las categorías A1, A2, B y C, poseen baja indexación en bases de datos internacionales como Web of Science o Scopus, limitando la estimación de indicadores bibliométricos para su comparación a nivel internacional. Como estudio de caso se seleccionaron 211 revistas de la BBNP-2008, tomando artículos publicados entre 2003 y 2007. Utilizando Google Académico, el software Publish or Perish y la base de datos Scopus, se cuantificaron y compararon indicadores de productividad e impacto para construir un ranking local (Q1-Q4) y realizar una homologación internacional con Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). El índice h resultó el mejor indicador para generar un ranking basado en cuartiles (Q1-Q4) de 170 revistas colombianas, homologables con cuartiles de SJR. Se propone esta metodología para clasificar y homologar las revistas latinoamericanas no indexadas, como herramienta útil para editores, editoriales, empresas de información y tomadores de decisiones en políticas públicas de educación, ciencia y tecnología a nivel regional y mundial.

We introduce Google Scholar Metrics (GSM), a new bibliometric product of Google that aims at providing the H-index for scientific journals and other information sources. We conduct a critical review of GSM showing its main characteristics and possibilities as a tool for scientific evaluation. We discuss its coverage along with the inclusion of repositories, bibliographic control, and its options for browsing and searching. We conclude that, despite Google Scholar’s value as a source for scien- tific assessment, GSM is an immature product with many shortcomings, and therefore we advise against its use for evalu- ation purposes. However, the improvement of these shortcomings would place GSM as a serious competitor to the other existing products for evaluating scientific journals. Se presenta Google Scholar Metrics (GSM), el nuevo producto bibliométrico de Google, que computa el índice h de revistas y otras fuentes de información científica. Se exponen las principales características de GSM, y se realiza una revisión crítica de sus posibilidades como herramienta para la evaluación de revistas científicas. Se estudia, entre otros aspectos, su cobertura, la inclusión de repositorios junto a las revistas científicas, el control bibliográfico de la información, y las posibilidades de consulta y visualización de resultados. Se concluye que, pese a las potencialidades de Google Scholar como fuente para la evaluación científica, GSM es un producto inmaduro y con múltiples limitaciones por lo que no se aconseja su uso con fines evaluativos. Igualmente se plantea que la mejora de sus prestaciones, posicionaría a GSM como una seria competencia para los productos de evaluación de revistas existentes en el mercado de la información científica.

La aparición de Google Scholar Citations y Google Scholar Metrics puede suponer una auténtica revolución en la mundo de la evaluación científica porque pone al alcance de todos los científicos herramientas para la medición bibliométrica. Con el fin de alertar a la comunidad científica de la facilidad que existe para manipular los datos e indicadores bibliométricos que proporcionan estos productos de Google, se ha realizado un experimento consistente en la manipulación del impacto de los miembros de un grupo de investigación y de sus trabajos tal como son reflejados en los perfiles de autores que ofrece Google Citations así como del número de citas e índice h de una muestra de revistas. Para ello se crean seis documentos producidos por un autor falso que emiten citas a todos los trabajos producidos por los tres autores y se suben a la página personal de un investigador de la Universidad de Granada. El resultado del experimento ha supuesto un incremento de 774 citas en los 129 trabajos producidos (con 6 citas acumuladas a cada trabajo) que revertido un incremento del índice h de los autores y de las revistas en los que se publicación los trabajos cientados. Se analiza el efecto perverso que este tipo de prácticas puede ocasionar en Google Citations y Google Scholar Metrics. Finalmente se ofrecen unas reflexiones finales sobre los efectos que pueden tener este tipo de prácticas y la falta de sistemas de control que ofrecen estos productos. The launch of Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics may provoke a revolution in the research evaluation field as it places within every researcher’s reach tools that allow bibliometric measuring. In order to alert the research community over how easily one can manipulate the data and bibliometric indicators offered by Google’s products we present an experiment in which we manipulate the Google Citations’ profiles of a research group through the creation of false documents that cite their documents, and consequently, the journals in which they have published modifying their H-index. For this purpose we created six documents authored by a faked author and we uploaded them to a researcher’s personal website under the University of Granada’s domain. The result of the experiment meant an increase of 774 citations in 129 papers (six citations per paper) increasing the authors and journals' H-index. We analyse the malicious effect this type of practices can cause to Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics. The study examines the h-index of textile researchers in Spain and, for the first time, provides information, on the range of values of this index in the area of textilerelated knowledge. This paper reports on a study of 10 scientific production indicators for Spanish textile researchers over the period 1955-2009. The population studied consisted of 73 researchers affiliated with 6 different institutions. Textile investigators represent a heterogeneous community, since they come from different areas of knowledge. The h-index studied presents a positive correlation, ranging between intense and notable, with the number of publications, publications by year, number of citations, citations per year, number of citations received by the most cited publication. The correlation is significant but negative concerning the percentage of authors’ non-cited publications.The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) has higher levels than the other institutions for the following indicators: h-index, number of publications, citations, citation per year, maximum number of citations. The Instituto Tecnológico Textil de Alcoy (AITEX) has the highest levels for the following indicators: h-index per year of activity and percentage of non-cited publications. Finally, a relation is shown between the h-index and three (latent) factors that explain the other indicators and provide three dimensions of the h-index. El estudio analiza, por primera vez, el índice h de los investigadores textiles de un país (España) y aporta información, también por primera vez, del rango de valores de este índice en el área de conocimiento textil. Se han estudiado también 10 indicadores de la producción científica de los investigadores textiles en España entre 1955 y 2009. La población objeto de este estudio está formada por 73 personas pertenecientes a 6 instituciones distintas. La población de investigadores textiles es un colectivo heterogéneo ya que éstos pertenecen a áreas de conocimientos distintos. El índice h estudiado presenta una correlación positiva, entre intensa y notable, con el número de publicaciones, publicaciones por año y número de citas recibidas, citas por año, número de citas recibidas por la publicación más citada. La correlación es notable pero de signo negativo con el porcentaje de publicaciones de la obra del autor que no han sido citadas nunca. El Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) presenta niveles superiores, respecto a las otras instituciones, en los siguientes indicadores: índice h, número de publicaciones, citas, citas por año y máximo de citas de la publicación más citada. El Instituto Tecnológico Textil de Alcoy (AITEX) tiene los mayores niveles en los siguientes indicadores: índice h por años de actividad y porcentaje de publicaciones no citadas. Finalmente, se relaciona el índice h con tres factores (latentes) que explican los otros indicadores y proporcionan tres dimensiones de aquel.

This work discusses the proposals of Gangan Prathap and András Schubert with the aim of using the Hirsch index as a basis for the calculation of a successive series of H indices. The most recent applications of H indices in institutional assessments at micro level and for assessing institutional impact on knowledge domains are discussed. The use of successive H indices offers a holistic view of the behaviour of the research staff of institutions and its impact on the international scientific community. The use of these indices should therefore be contemplated in institutional assessment policies. El presente trabajo discute las propuestas elaboradas por Gangan Prathap y András Schubert con el objetivo de utilizar el índice Hirsch como base para el cálculo de una serie sucesiva de índices H. Se presentan las más recientes aplicaciones de estos índices, tanto para la evaluación institucional a nivel micro, como para evaluar el impacto institucional en dominios del conocimiento. El empleo de índices H sucesivos ofrece una visión integral del comportamiento de los claustros que integran las instituciones dedicadas a la investigación y su impacto sobre la comunidad científica internacional, por lo que podrían tenerse en cuenta en las políticas de evaluación institucional.

We propose the b index as a measure of scientific excellence at the micro and meso levels, as a promising supplement to the h index and its variants (such as g index and R index)

The future of scientific journals in Latin America is uncertain. The inability to calculate bibliometric indicators to classify and homologate journals according to globally-used quartiles reduces journal visibility. For instance, Colombian journals classified in the National Bibliographic Database Publindex (BBNP) under categories A1, A2, B and C, have low rates of indexing in international databases, such as Web of Science or Scopus, thus limiting the estimation of bibliometric indicators for comparison at an international level. In this case study, articles published between 2003 and 2007 were taken from 211 journals selected from the BBNP- 2008. Using Google Scholar, Publish or Perish software and the Scopus database, impact and productivity indicators were quantified and compared creating a regional ranking (Q1-Q4). They were subsequently homologated internationally with the Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR). The h index proved the best indicator to generate the ranking of 170 Colombian journals based on quartiles (Q1-Q4) able to be homologated with SJR quartiles. We propose this methodology for classifying and homologating Latin American journals that are not indexed internationally, as a useful tool for publishers, publishing houses, information agencies and public policy decision-makers concerning education, science and technology, both regionally and globally.El futuro de las revistas científicas en Latinoamérica es incierto. La incapacidad de calcular indicadores bibliométricos útiles para clasificarlas y homologarlas con cuartiles de referencia mundial reducen su visibilidad. Por ejemplo, las revistas colombianas clasificadas en la Base Bibliográfica Nacional Publindex (BBNP) bajo las categorías A1, A2, B y C, poseen baja indexación en bases de datos internacionales como Web of Science o Scopus, limitando la estimación de indicadores bibliométricos para su comparación a nivel internacional. Como estudio de caso se seleccionaron 211 revistas de la BBNP-2008, tomando artículos publicados entre 2003 y 2007. Utilizando Google Académico, el software Publish or Perish y la base de datos Scopus, se cuantificaron y compararon indicadores de productividad e impacto para construir un ranking local (Q1-Q4) y realizar una homologación internacional con Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). El índice h resultó el mejor indicador para generar un ranking basado en cuartiles (Q1-Q4) de 170 revistas colombianas, homologables con cuartiles de SJR. Se propone esta metodología para clasificar y homologar las revistas latinoamericanas no indexadas, como herramienta útil para editores, editoriales, empresas de información y tomadores de decisiones en políticas públicas de educación, ciencia y tecnología a nivel regional y mundial.

Three years ago a bibliometric index for the qualification of a person's scientific output was proposed by Hirsch, the so-called h index. This is an integer number which combines the number of papers of an author and the number of citations they gathered. Thus the h index is an indicator for both the productivity and the impact of a scientist. This paper presents the properties of the h index and the great attention it attracted within a short time. Numerous other indices, claimed to be better than the original, were proposed in the meantime. These developments are discussed critically.

This paper aims at estimating the determinants of co-authorship in economics. More specifically, we test the existence of a potential relationship between the research efficiency of an individual and that of his co-authors (the so called assortative matching hypothesis) using a novel database of French academic scholars. However, individual research productivity should be an endogenous regressor as the quality of an academic's publication will depend somehow on the quality of his co-authors. We have applied the Two Stage Residual Inclusion (2SRI) approach in order to take into account this endogeneity bias. The main empirical result is that the number and the quality of a researcher's co-authors reflect the productivity of that researcher.There is also a significant gender effect: being a woman has no impact on the probability of never collaborating with other economists but it decreases both the quality and the quantity of co-authors. Finally, lifetime cycles are also an important determinant of the co-authorship trend as the social imprinting hypothesis would suggest. So institutional changes occurred in French academia in mid-eighties have had a large impact on individual research productivity.

Background: Radiation therapy is used to treat and control advanced ovarian cancer with spread to abdominal peritoneum. In this study, a comparison between various plans of radiation therapy within the abdomen and pelvis was performed in order to achieve an effective treatment response. Methods: Contouring and planning of 20 patients with CT-scan of the abdomen and pelvis were done by TiGRT software. In order to compare the different types of treatment planning for the selected site, some common criteria in radiotherapy and H-index were used. Findings: Among these methods, it was found that the two methods of anterior-posterior and lateral with 18 MV energy and same weight have same level of protection of organs at risk. While the tangent method do not produce a reasonable result. Moreover in anterior- posterior method can be shown that the changing in energy and beam weight give a various results from PTV covering and dose uniformity aspects. Conclusion: Among the various treatment planning were seen that AP/PA with AP = 6MV energy and weight 1, PA = 18 MV and weight 1.5, for covering whole abdomen give a better results.
