The sword lily Gladiolus palustris Gaudin is protected on European level and listed in Annexes II and IV of the EC Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC. It grows in nutrient-poor, calcareous meadows in central and eastern Europe. Tree encroachment in montane meadows of the European Alps as a result of recent land use changes and the abandonment of traditional farming practices threaten the survival of this species. Conservation-driven mowing is considered a feasible conservation measure for maintaining high species diversity in abandoned semi-natural grasslands. To assess the effects of ten years of biennial mowing on a grassland community in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, Italy (Site of Community Importance, Natura 2000 network), ten 25 m2 plots were established whereby four plots were placed in the mowed area, four in the non-mowed area and two in a small non-mowed patch of grassland inside the mowed area. In each plot the following variables were recorded, total percentage of plant cover, percentage cover of woody species, percentage cover of herbaceous species, percentage cover and number of flowering ramets of G. palustris and a complete list of species and their percentage abundance. Mowed plots showed a higher species richness than non-mowed plots. The number of G. palustris flowering ramets and percentage cover increased manifold in mowed plots compared to non-mowed plots. The resumption of mowing for conservation purposes undertaken by the managing authority halted the process of tree encroachment and avoided a drastic change in plant composition. Periodic mowing (every second or third year) was demonstrated to be a cost-effective conservation measure in non-productive grasslands to keep grasses at bay in favour of forbs of high conversation value.

Monitoring semi-natural grasslands is difficult and costly because they occur in highly dynamic and extremely complex habitat mosaics. We combined the use of a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry to acquire high spatial resolution (∼1.5 cm pixel) RGB imagery. After image classification through Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA), we accurately were able to distinguish three semi-natural grassland types, one of which is a habitat of conservation concern. The use of orthomosaics, digital elevation models (DEMs), and canopy height models (CHMs) yielded excellent overall classification accuracies (89%) assessed through both remotely validated and ground-truthed points. We identified two layers of woody vegetation with a user's (UA) and producer's (PA) accuracies73% and three grassland types: closed grassland (UA = 94%; PA = 97%), open grassland habitat (UA = 97%; PA = 93%) and open grasslands with soil erosion (UA = 96%; PA = 98%). The grassland types differed substantially in the cover of vegetation, rocks, stones, and bare soil measured in the field, as well as in the number and relative cover of the habitat diagnostic species. The proposed methodology is highly promising for mapping and monitoring semi-natural grassland of conservation concern in support of tailored management actions.

Coastal ecosystems are among the world’s most threatened environments, as they undergo diverse anthropogenic pressures, which trigger habitat alteration along with rarefaction and/or local extinction of native species. In this study, we performed a floristic investigation aimed at assessing the environmental status of two protected sandy areas located on the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy, the southern Garigliano estuary area and Castel Volturno Nature Reserve. These localities show similar geomorphological and climatic conditions, but different land uses and management practices. The sampling of the vascular plants was carried out through geo-location of species, to allow their availability to national and international floristic mapping projects. At whole territory and habitat types level, major trends for shared and exclusive species composition were identified through the analysis of life form, chorology percentage spectrum and similarity index. We detected that the total vascular flora is composed by 429 species, and found out that Garigliano is slightly richer in species (317) than Castel Volturno (311). It is important to note that Garigliano and Castel Volturno’s richness in plants was considerably significant in comparison with other coastal areas of central and southern Italy. Furthermore, although we pointed out that the studied areas showed a low degree of floristic similarity, the shrubland habitat encompassed the highest number of total species and plants of floristic interest (i.e., Italian endemic, rare in Campania, plants included in CITES convention, Habitat Directive, Regional Law of Campania 40/94, National and Regional Red List) in both areas. Finally, despite a severe alteration due to direct anthropogenic disturbance and large-scale alterations that occurred in the last 60 years, we showed that several species of phytogeographical interest are still found in the studied coastal sandy areas, confirming the great importance of this territory for plant diversity and conservation.

International audience; Coastal lagoons have been recognised as a priority habitat for conservation and have benefited from several conservation plans. Under the Mediterranean climate, some of these lagoons might dry out during summer due to drought events. We propose the term Mediterranean Temporary Lagoons (MTLs) for these ephemeral water bodies and discuss their definition and characteristics. This term emerged in France among its coastal zone managers, who now commonly use it for conservation purposes. It is used in both natural systems as well as most artificial salt ponds in abandoned saltworks. In Europe, two directives have integrated lagoons as key targets to be preserved. Nonetheless, a certain discrepancy in the different definitions of lagoons has constrained joint actions. Indeed, while institutional definitions were originally derived from the scientific concept, their legislative and managerials meanings have been gradually modified and nowadays often differ from the original concept to create difficulties in the field. In addition, while it has been recommended to consider MTLs as a coastal lagoon habitat in the European Habitat Directive, its interpretation among EU member states is unsettled. Thus, clarifying lagoon habitats' terminology is required to ensure better management, monitoring and planning, and coordinate conservation actions. We discuss the inclusion of MTLs in habitat 1150 by confronting scientific and institutional literature and propose a new framework to better delimitate lagoon habitat around the Mediterranean basin, integrating MTLs. MTLs represent a specific habitat that hosts a pool of stenoecious macrophytes of conservation interest like Althenia filiformis, Riella helicophylla or Tolypella salina.

A syntaxonomical revision of the Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class for the Sicilian territory is provided. This syntaxon gathers the ephemeral herbaceous hygrophilous plant communities linked to periodically submerged soils, widely distributed in the European, circum-Mediterranean and Macaronesian territories. Within this class, two orders are recognized, lsoëtetalia, with a prevalently Mediterranean distribution, and Nanocyperetalia chiefly occurring in the central-European and Atlantic territories, with scattered and marginal occurrence in the Mediterranean area. The order Isoëtetalia in Sicily is represented by four alliances, i.e., Isoëtion, Preslion cervinae, Cicendio-Solenopsion laurentiae and Agrostion salmanticae, while within Nanocyperetalia three alliances can be recognized, namely Nanocyperion, Verbenion supinae and Lythrion tribracteati. Overall, 32 plant communities are recognized, 11 of which are described for the first time. Each higher rank syntaxa and related associations are examined from a nomenclatural, floristic, ecological and chorological point of view. In particular, the associations were processed using cluster analysis in order to highlight the correlations between them. Regarding the floristic aspects, a checklist of the species occurring in the phytosociological relevés is provided, as well as a new combination concerning Solenopsis gasparrinii, a critical species of the Sicilian flora, is proposed.

Coastal ecosystems provide key services, but human activities and natural phenomena such as coastal erosion can strongly affect them. These changes can induce severe ecological and economic damages. This study aims to evaluate temporal changes in a protected area (Regional Park of Maremma, Southern Tuscany, Italy) in terms of both ecological and economical damage associated with ecosystem services loss observed over the period 2001–2014. Studies were performed using remote sensing as well as field verification for more critical habitat types. Results show an overall reduction of the habitat in flooded areas. During the study period total Ecosystem Services Values (ESV) decreased by more than 13% and the major contributor to that changes is loss of wetlands (net reduction of about 4.3 M US$/y), not directly beach erosion. Although this study proposes a first order approximation in terms of ESVs of considered biomes, these values are set to increase in the near future as knowledge and technologies improve. Therefore, wetlands management plans are crucial in this context, and could have much more significant effects on ecosystem efficiency and resources for future generations than beach erosion prevention.

Alluvial forests with black alder are a priority conservation habitat in Europe. In the Po plain, black alder is traditionally managed by coppicing with frequent rotations. This study aims to ascertain whether such management is compatible with habitat conservation, by measuring the effect of time since coppicing on forest structure and plant species composition across different layers. We compared the effects of three treatments, each thrice replicated: recent (10–20 years), medium (20–30 years) and old coppice (>40 years). In all nine stands we measured basal area, tree and regeneration density, mean tree diameter and height, dominance by alder, species richness, Shannon diversity, and the number of ruderal and non-native species. Significant differences in dendrometric variables, species richness, diversity, and percent cover by chorotype were assessed for treatment effects by two-way ANOVA. Frequently coppiced stands had a lower basal area, mean tree size, and volume, a more simplified vertical structure, a lower cover of the herbaceous layer and higher bare soil cover due to harvesting disturbance, a significantly lower cover by typical woodland Fraxinetalia species, and a significantly higher frequency and cover of non-native species. Our study showed that frequent coppicing worsened the conservation status of black alder forests in the study area, simplified stand structure, deteriorated species composition, and increased the spread of non-native and ruderal plant species. Such negative effects persisted even 20–30 years after cutting. We recommend amending the current legislation and introducing mandatory Implications Assessment procedures everywhere alder forests are susceptible to be impacted in a similarly negative way.

Border and isolated plant populations represent an interesting target for ecological and conservation issues. We analysed the ecological constraints and the conservation status of the eastern population of Helianthemum caput-felis Boiss. (Cistaceae), located in Sardinia. The distribution of H. caput-felis was verified via field surveys; ecological data, morphological and reproductive traits, were recorded in 40 permanent plots randomly established; the human trampling effects on plant density, plant size and plant performance were analysed. Plant density was higher in bedrock and lowland areas, in garrigue and maquis habitats; however, the differences among plants growing in different ecological conditions were not statistically significant; only human trampling intensity significantly affected plant density and lowest values were observed in areas with intense trampling pressure. The in situ conservation activities carried out in the last 10 years on endemic and threatened Sardinian vascular flora were analysed. Monitored species were selected following the policy species (listed in the Habitat Directive) and following the regional responsibility criterion. A monitoring scheme, with three levels of intensity, was applied and economic costs of the monitoring activities were analysed. In the 10-year long field work, 49 taxa corresponding to 50% of policy species and to 22.5% of the Sardinian endemics were monitored. The Sulcitano-Iglesiente sector showed the highest number of monitored taxa (20), whereas the Gennargenteo sector showed the highest number of populations monitored (32). We studied the downy birch forests that grow in the headwaters of rivers in the mountains in NW Iberian Peninsula and their differences from other previously described birch forests. To do this, an ordination analysis was done on a database of 342 relevés (144 unpublished). As a result, four riparian forest associations were recognized in the territory, all of them belonging to the suballiance Saxifrago spathularis-Fraxinenion excelsioris (Hyperico androsaemi-Alnion glutinosae, Alno-Fraxinetaliaexcelsioris, Salici-Populetea). Two associations (Carici reuterianae-Betuletum celtibericae and Violo palustris-Betuletum pubescentis) have been previously described, but the other two (Chaerophyllo hirsuti-Betuletum pubescentis and Valeriano officinalis-Betuletum pubescentis) are described here for the first time. We characterized their floristic composition, ecological features and distribution, and evaluated their conservation value under the criteria of the 92/43/CEE Community Directive, and with regard to national and regional lists of protected species En este trabajo se aborda el estudio de las comunidades de abedulares riparios presentes en los tramosde cabecera de diversos macizos montañosos del extremo NW Ibérico y su diferenciación frente a otros tipos de abedulares previamente descritos. Para ello se ha aplicado un análisis de ordenación a una base de datos conformadapor 342 inventarios (144 inéditos). Seven nature reserves situated in the province of Arezzo (Tuscany, Central Italy), presenting various habitats, plants and animals of comunitary interest according to the Habitat Directive, have been observed from a myco-floristic viewpoint. A synthesis of the results on fungal investigations is given. Interesting the finding of rare species such as Ramariopsis pulchella and Mycena diosma.

In the Mediterranean Region, habitat loss and fragmentation severely affect coastal wetlands, due to the rapid expansion of anthropogenic activities that has occurred in the last decades. Landscape metrics are commonly used to define landscape patterns and to evaluate fragmentation processes. This investigation focuses on the performance of a set of landscape pattern indices within landscapes characterized by coastal environments and extent below 1,000 ha. The aim is to assess the degree of habitat fragmentation for the monitoring of protected areas and to learn whether values of landscape metrics can characterize fine-resolution landscape patterns. The study areas are three coastal wetlands belonging to the Natura 2000 network and sited on the Adriatic side of Apulia (Southern Italy). The Habitat Maps were derived from the Vegetation Maps generated integrating phytosociological relevés and Earth Observation data. In the three sites, a total of 16 habitat types were detected. A selected set of landscape metrics was applied in order to investigate their performance in assessing fragmentation and spatial patterns of habitats. The final results showed that the most significant landscape patterns are related to highly specialized habitat types closely linked to coastal environments. In interpreting the landscape patterns of these highly specialized habitats, some specific ecological factors were taken into account. The shape indices were the most useful in assessing the degree of fragmentation of habitat types that usually have elongated morphology along the shoreline or the coastal lagoons. In all the cases, to be meaningful, data obtained from the application of the selected indices were jointly assessed, especially at the class level.

The implementation of Natura 2000, Ecological Network of protected areas established in the European territory under Council Directive 92/43/EEC, has encountered serious problems in many European States. This is proven by conspicuous juridical interventions initiated by the European Union against Member States failing to comply with the Directive’s requirements; by the aversion of stakeholders involved in the use of protected areas and by the criticisms that environmental non-governmental organizations expressed about the governmental approaches towards the network’s realization. This paper presents a critical reflection on the problems in the realization of Natura 2000 Network, by analysing and comparing the experiences of two Member States: the Netherlands and Italy. Despite the differences in national natural heritages and nature conservation policy traditions, the two Natura 2000 implementation processes present interesting similarities. These allowed the authors to identify theoretical and practical obstacles that are making the network’s implementation problematic and to reflect on the most important challenges to the realization of Natura 2000 Network in the two countries, as well as in other Member States that experienced similar implementation problems.

The Grésigne State Forest (Tarn, France) has been included in the European network Natura 2000 for its exceptional entomological richness, especially with saproxylic beetles. Among the many species encountered, the three species listed in the annexe II of the Habitat Directive, Limoniscus violaceus, Cerambyx cerdo and Lucanus cervus, are characteristic of different habitats (cavities at the bottom of the trees, dying trees and decaying wood) and imply specific management rules for their conservation. First, an “objective document” (Docob) was drawn up in appliance of the Habitat Directive. Then, a new forest management plan (2004-2021) was established, including measures to preserve these high heritage value species : setting up a network of old stands, increasing the dead wood volume compartment, preserving trees with cavities. Part of these measures is financed by a Natura 2000 contract, on a French state-European Community joint basis., Les coléoptères saproxyliques dans la gestion de la forêt de Grésigne. — La forêt domaniale de Grésigne (Tarn, France) a été incluse dans le réseau européen Natura 2000 pour son exceptionnelle richesse entomologique, en particulier en coléoptères saproxyliques. Parmi les nombreuses espèces rencontrées, les trois qui fi gurent en annexe II de la Directive Habitat, Limoniscus violaceus, Cerambyx cerdo et Lucanus cervus, sont caractéristiques de divers habitats (cavités à la base des arbres, arbres mourants et bois en décomposition) et requièrent des règles de gestion particulières pour assurer leur préservation. International audience; Ranunculus communities have been identified by the European Community Directive on Conservation of Natural and Semi-Natural Habitats as a key habitat in need of protection. The ecological requirements and floristic composition of three Ranunculus communities were investigated in North-Eastern France. We also aimed to determine the relationships between environmental parameters, Ranunculus abundance and species richness. R. fluitans communities clearly differed from the other communities by a higher evenness and species richness and by the occurrence of specific species. In contrast, R. penicillatus and R. peltatus communities displayed similar floristic content. Three different sub-associations were however identified within these communities. If alkalinity was determinant in isolating R. fluitans communities from the other stretches, the ecological ranges of the three communities strongly overlapped while considering parameters linked with other resources or with physical constraints. Further, no significant correlations were highlighted between environmental parameters, Ranunculus abundance and species richness. With respect to conservation, these observations may indicate the particular difficulty in defining each Ranunculus habitat on a European scale, and identify several key points which need to be taken into account when evaluating their status.

Research, monitoring and development of preservation strategies for threatened species are often limited by national borders even though a global perspective would be more appropriate. In this study, we collected data on the occurrence of a threatened beetle, Osmoderma eremita, associated with tree hollows in 2,142 localities from 33 countries in Europe where it is or has been present. The larvae develop in tree hollows and very few observations of larvae have been observed in dead logs on the ground. As long as there is a suitable tree hollow, it appears that O. eremita may use any tree species. Oaks (Quercus spp.) are the trees mainly used by O. eremita, followed by lime (Tilia spp.), willow (Salix spp.), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and fruit trees (Prunus spp., Pyrus spp., Malus domestica). O. eremita is still found in some remnants of natural forest, but is mainly observed on land that has long been used by man, such as pasture woodlands, hunting parks, avenues, city parks and trees around agricultural fields and along streams. The occurrence of O. eremita seems to have decreased in all European countries. Relatively high densities of O. eremita localities occur in Central Europe (northern Italy, Austria, Czechia, southern Poland and eastern Germany), some parts of Northern Europe (south-eastern Sweden, Latvia) and France. In some regions in north-western Europe, the species is extinct or may occur at some single sites (Norway, Danish mainland, The Netherlands, Belgium, north-eastern France). There are few data from south-eastern Europe. Many local extinctions of O. eremita are to be expected in the near future, especially in regions with recent habitat loss and fragmentation. O. eremita is useful as an indicator and umbrella species for the preservation of the entire invertebrate community associated with hollow trees in Europe. A preservation plan for O. eremita should include three aspects that are of general importance in nature conservation in Europe today: (1) preservation of remnants of natural forests with old, broad-leaved trees, (2) preservation and restoration of habitats related to traditional agricultural landscapes and (3) preservation of remaining ‘islands’ of nature in urban areas.
