In De rege et regis institutione libre tres (1599), the Jesuit Juan de Mariana (1536-1624) offers a comprehensive analysis of European monarchical government. Mariana examines and refutes contemporary ideas of monarchical absolutism together with the legalistic cultures from which they arose. Mariana weighs doctrines from scholastic natural law theory and Roman law against historical experience and conceives a language of political prudence or Catholic reason of state that puts the pursuit of political consensus over conflict and the unrestrained exercise of royal power. De rege offers a political understanding that respects the plurality of political cultures within the Spanish Habsburg monarchy and a political language that reflects the reality of governing an early modern poly–centric body politic. Mariana examine pour les réfuter les idées contemporaines de l'absolutisme monarchique ainsi que les cultures légalistes dont elles sont issues. Mariana confronte les doctrines de la théorie scolastique du droit naturel et du droit romain à l'expérience historique et conçoit un langage de prudence politique ou de raison d'État catholique qui met fait primer la recherche d'un consensus politique sur les conflits et l'exercice illimité du pouvoir royal. Le De rege offre une compréhension politique respectueuse la pluralité des cultures politiques au sein de la monarchie des Habsbourg espagnols et un langage politique qui reflète la réalité de la gouvernance d'un corps politique polycentrique et moderne.

Se explora en este artículo el lugar y la importancia de la antropología política del agustinismo católico en la obra del jesuita Juan de Mariana (1535-1624). Mariana, uno de los pensadores políticos más originales de la temprana modernidad española, es capaz de adaptar e incorporar varias doctrinas de la razón de Estado en la ética y teología política católica. La concepción de la naturaleza humana en el agustinismo católico determina la manera en que Mariana desarrolla el pensamiento y la acción política de un modo realista y pragmático. Pasando por el prisma de Juan de Mariana, este artículo trata de diferenciar nuestra comprensión de la génesis, contexto y alcance de la razón de Estado y su relación con la teología moral en la España y Europa de la temprana modernidad. Asimismo, se trata de una aportación al debate sobre la génesis y las características de la modernidad europea, las teorías seculares del Estado y las variantes racionalistas del pensamiento político. Cet article analyse la place et l’importance de l’anthropologie politique de l’augustinisme catholique dans l’œuvre du jésuite Juan de Mariana (1535-1624). Mariana, l’un des penseurs politiques les plus originaux de la première modernité espagnole, est capable d’adapter et d’intégrer plusieurs doctrines de la raison d’État dans l’éthique et la théologie politique catholique. La conception de la nature humaine de l’augustinisme catholique détermine la façon dont Mariana développe la pensée et l’action politique de façon réaliste et pragmatique. À partir de l’Œuvre de Juan de Mariana, cet article cherche à distinguer notre compréhension de la genèse, le contexte et la portée de la raison d’état de son rapport avec la théologie morale dans l’Espagne et l’Europe de la première modernité. Il constitue également un apport au débat sur la genèse et les caractéristiques de la modernité européenne, les théories séculaires de l’État et les variantes rationalistes de la pensée politique. This article explores the place and importance of Catholic Augustinian political anthropology in the work of the Jesuit Juan de Mariana (1535-1624). Mariana, arguably one of the most original early modern Spanish political thinkers, is able to adapt and absorb doctrines of reason of state into Catholic political theology and ethics. Catholic Augustinian conceptions of human nature in particular drive and direct the way in which he develops realist and pragmatic modes of political thought and action. Through the prism of Juan de Mariana, then, this article seeks to differentiate our understanding of the genesis, contexts and scope of reason of state and its relationship to moral theology in early modern Spain and Europe. It is also a contribution to the continuing debate about the genesis and characteristics of European modernity, secular theories of the state, and rationalist modes of political thought.

This chapter discusses the ways in which the Six livres de la Republique fed into Castilian political discourse. It takes its cue from Francis Bacon, exploring some of the "Contract of Errour betweene the Deliuerer and the Receiuer" of this particular text. The enquiry, then, is one into Bodin as a contested and ambiguous source in Castilian political discourse, into what different readers understood or wanted him to have said, and why, and how they used the Republique to suit their understanding and purpose. They picked over the treatise, guided by the pressing issues of the day, mining it for suitable quotations, concepts, and evidence, and picked it apart. Bodin's Castilian readers rarely treated the text as a doctrinally coherent 'whole'. The authors using the Republique make "contracts of errour" in the sense of a contract that is meant to assign interpretative agency mostly or solely to the "receiuer". This introductory chapter provides an overview of the key themes discussed in the book Theorising the Ibero-American Atlantic . The book seeks to delineate methodological, theoretical, and temporal frameworks and pathways for engaging Ibero-American Atlantic studies. It is divided into three parts. The first part, "Defining the Ibero-American Atlantic", contains four essays offering different yet complementary theoretical perspectives on the Atlantic basin; four views of how the field might rise to the challenge and assert itself as one of many valid organising frameworks for historical inquiry for new generations in the twenty-first century. The second part, "Early Modern Exchanges: Identities and Ties (1492-1850)", offers four distinct approaches to the history of gender, race, ideas, and culture in the Ibero-American Atlantic. The third part, "Transatlantic Migrations: Culture and History Reconsidered (1850-today)", probes the meanings and validity of an Atlantic studies approach for the modern and contemporary periods. Starting from Justus Lipsius's Monita et exempla politica (1605), this book offers a collection of essays dealing with the disputed Macchiavellian, Tacitean or Neostoic character of Lipsius's political thought, and its impact on the dynamics of political discourse in Early Modern Europe.

This chapter seeks to elucidate the uses of historical narrative in Justus Lipsius's Monita et exempla politica (Antwerp, Plantin: 1605). The Politica recommends itself as the starting point for an examination of the changing dynamics of Justus Lipsiuss political writing. Prudence, Lipsius says, is the product of usus (personal experience) and historia (recorded collective experience), which in turn produce doctrinasuch as the precepts and principles so carefully selected and arranged in the Politica. Prudence in the Monita is effectively synonymous with the individuals awareness and continual rational engagement with usus and historia. There is no juridical conceptualisation of sovereignty, no explicit analysis of the constitutional and theological issues and principles driving contemporary debate about the nature and limits of monarchical power.
