Purpose The purpose of the present research is to examine the comparative values that urban Vietnamese consumers place on attributes of rice that is produced using environmentally friendly methods. The authors consider the impacts that this may have on the livelihoods of rural Vietnamese small farmers. Rice is an “impure public good” that includes both “private” and “public” attributes that consumers consider in their purchase decisions. Consumers make tradeoffs between environmentally and socially beneficial practices (public goods) and perceptions of product quality (private goods). The authors used latent class modeling to investigate the values associated with attributes of rice that is produced using sustainable farming practices. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a discrete choice experimental design in which consumers stated their choices among combinations of rice attributes. The survey provided responses from 360 urban Vietnamese consumers and allowed to estimate the preferences and nonpecuniary values for rice grown using different levels of environmentally beneficial production methods. Findings The results identify two segments of rice consumers: one group of consumers who are sensitive to price and the other group who are sensitive to environmental issues. The individual characteristics are reflected in the choices of production methods and in the willingness to pay for environmentally beneficial outcomes of those methods. Research limitations/implications Given the number of independent variables measured, the sample was relatively small, such that confirmatory statistical methods were inconclusive. However, the authors used multiple analytical tools that provide corroboration of the significant determinants of the utility functions for the two segments. Practical implications The results provide directions for production of rice at a national level, as well as practical implications for consumer-oriented communications. Social implications Results suggest that the emerging middle class of Vietnamese consumers are willing to pay more for rice that is produced using methods that are beneficial to the environment. Results also indicate challenges to provide sustainably-produced rice to poorer groups of consumers. Originality/value The study provides important context for consumer preferences within emerging economies. This also adds to a growing literature that uses the choice experiment method to estimate consumer valuation of the outcomes of various agricultural practices.

We have developed a dual copper/photoredox-catalyzed approach for the construction of the P(O)-N bond from commercially available aromatic amines and P(O)-H compounds. This metallaphotoredox method avoids toxic or corrosive reagents and does not require prefunctionalized substrates. The reaction has a broad substrate scope and is suitable for the synthesis of phosphonamides and phosphinamides, thus complementing the previous nonphotochemical approaches. The reaction is amenable to the direct modification of drug molecules and can be conducted on a gram scale.

Recent reports discovered that red blood cells (RBCs) could scavenge cell-free mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which drives the accelerated erythrophagocytosis and innate immune activation characterized by anemia and inflammatory cytokine production. However, the clinical value of the circulating mtDNA copy number alterations in hematologic malignancies is poorly understood. Our data showed that in comparison to healthy group, the patients group had significantly higher mtDNA and histone H4 levels. Moreover, we observed that RBC-bound mtDNA and histone H4 were negatively correlated with hemoglobin in patients. In addition, cytokines and chemokines levels in patients differed significantly from normal controls (21 higher, 7 lower). Our study suggested that both circulating mtDNA and histone H4 were associated with anemia in hematologic malignancies, which helps to further understand the potential mechanism of anemia development in patients with hematologic malignancies. This information may play a vital role in the specific therapeutic interventions for leukemia in the future.

Few studies have reported the association between the pattern and time point of recurrence in different groups stratified by age in postoperative survival of patients with gastric cancer.The clinicopathological data and recurrence data of 2028 patients with GC who underwent curative surgery from January 2010 to March 2015 were enrolled in this study. Patients were grouped according to age: young group (YG) (≤45 years old) (n = 180) and non-young group (OG) (gt;45 years old) (n = 1848).A total of 2028 patients were enrolled. The young group had better 5-year OS and DFS than the non-young group. In peritoneal recurrence, the cumulative incidence of recurrence in YG was higher than that in OG (P lt; 0.001). In distant recurrence, the cumulative incidence of recurrence YG was always lower than that of OG (P = 0.004). Recurrence hazard function varied over time between the two groups:in the peritoneal metastasis, the recurrence hazard for YG was higher and earlier than that of OG and the YG was observed during five years after surgery with two recurrence peaks in 8.5 months and in 41.5 months. In distant recurrence, the recurrence hazard for OG had an earlier and higher single peak than that of YG (6.0 months).The recurrence characteristics of patients with gastric cancer after curative resection between young group and older group are different. Personalized follow-up strategies should be developed according to the age and time point after operation for the early detection of recurrence and making decision for further treatment.

Laparoscopic surgical approaches for gastric cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy are increasing, yet there is limited evidence of their safety and effectiveness.This prospective single-armed clinical trial enrolled 80 neoadjuvant chemotherapy patients who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy. In addition, to better analyze the outcomes of this study, 1:2 propensity score matching was performed, and a contemporaneous historic control group containing 160 laparoscopic gastrectomy patients without neoadjuvant chemotherapy was established.Analyses were performed to compare the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group (n = 80) and the control group (n = 160). The general clinical data of both groups were comparable. The neoadjuvant chemotherapy group showed less intraoperative bleeding (P = .029) and recovered more quickly than the control group (all P.05). The 2 groups did not exhibit major differences in terms of postoperative complications (P = .679) or severe complications (P = .055). The proportion of patients with ypT4 stage and ypN3 stage disease in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group totaled 20.7% and 23.8%, respectively, which was significantly lower than that observed in the control group (P.05). The number of metastatic lymph nodes was 4.8 ± 7.0 in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group, which was lower than that in the control group (P.001). In the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group, the major pathological regression rate was 27.5%, while the objective radiologic response rate (complete response + partial response) was 64.0%. In contrast to nonresponding patients, the patients who experienced an objective response had a shorter operation time (P.001), less intraoperative bleeding (P.001), and fewer metastatic lymph nodes (P = .005). The short-term effects observed in the nonresponding patients were similar to those observed in the control group.Laparoscopic gastrectomy could achieve improved short-term outcomes through NACT tumor downstaging without increasing the incidence of postoperative complications. Further multicenter and prospective clinical trials are warranted.

There is insufficient evidence to evaluate the long-term outcomes of robotic radical gastrectomy. The aim of this study was to compare the radical results and long-term outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic radical gastrectomy.We prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed the general clinicopathological data of gastric cancer patients treated with robotic radical gastrectomy (RG) and laparoscopic radical gastrectomy (LG) from July 2016 to July 2018 at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital. The RG cohort was matched 1:3 with the LG cohort by using propensity score matching (PSM). The primary endpoints of the study were 3-year overall survival (OS) and 3-year relapse-free survival (RFS).The study included 221 patients treated with RG and 1106 patients treated with LG for gastric cancer. After PSM, 211 patients were included in the RG cohort, and 663 patients were included in the LG cohort. The 3-year OS rate was 81.0% in the robotic cohort and 79.3% in the laparoscopic cohort (log-rank test, P = 0.516). The 3-year RFS rate was 78.7% in the robotic cohort and 75.6% in the laparoscopic cohort (log-rank test, P = 0.600). In the subgroup analyses, no significant differences were noted between the RG and LG cohorts in terms of 3-year OS and 3-year RFS (all P 0.05). The therapeutic value index of each lymph node station dissection in the robotic cohort was comparable to that in the laparoscopic cohort.Robotic radical gastrectomy can achieve radical results and long-term outcomes comparable to laparoscopic surgery, and further multicenter prospective studies can be conducted to assess the clinical efficacy of robotic radical gastrectomy.

Robotic surgery may be advantageous for complex surgery. We aimed to compare the intraoperative and postoperative short-term outcomes of spleen-preserving splenic hilar lymphadenectomy (SPSHL) during robotic and laparoscopic total gastrectomy.From July 2016 to December 2020, the clinicopathological data of 115 patients who underwent robotic total gastrectomy combined with robotic SPSHL (RSPSHL) and 697 patients who underwent laparoscopic total gastrectomy combined with laparoscopic SPSHL (LSPSHL) were retrospectively analyzed. A 1:2 ratio propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the differences between the two groups to compare their outcomes. The Generic Error Rating Tool was used to evaluate the technical performance.After PSM, the baseline preoperative characteristics of the 115 patients in the RSPSHL and 230 patients in the LSPSHL groups were balanced. The dissection time of the region of the splenic artery trunk (5.4 ± 1.9 min vs. 7.8 ± 3.6 min, P 0.001), the estimated blood loss during SPSHL (9.6 ± 4.8 ml vs. 14.9 ± 7.8 ml, P 0.001), and the average number of intraoperative technical errors during SPSHL (15.1 ± 3.4 times/case vs. 20.7 ± 4.3 times/case, P 0.001) were significantly lower in the RSPSHL group than in the LSPSHL group. The RSPSHL group showed higher dissection rates of No. 10 (78.3% vs. 70.0%, P = 0.104) and No. 11d (54.8% vs. 40.4%, P = 0.012) lymph nodes and significantly improved postoperative recovery results in terms of times to ambulation, first flatus, and first intake (P 0.05). The splenectomy rates of the two groups were similar (1.7% vs. 0.4%, P = 0.539), and there was no significant difference in morbidity and mortality within postoperative 30 days (13.0% vs. 15.2%, P = 0.589).Compared to LSPSHL, RSPSHL has more advantages in terms of surgical qualities and postoperative recovery process with similar morbidity and mortality. For complex SPSHL, robotic surgery may be a better choice.

EE prevents experimental lung metastases of murine melanoma cells.

Purpose: The aim of our study is to elucidate whether T cells expressing GPC3-targeted chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) can efficiently eliminate GPC3-positive HCC cells and their potential in the treatment of HCC.Experimental Design: T cells expressing a first-generation and third-generation GPC3-targeted CAR were prepared using lentiviral vector transduction. The in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic activities of the genetically engineered CAR T cells were evaluated against various HCC cell lines.Results: GPC3-targeted CAR T cells could efficiently kill GPC3-positive HCC cells but not GPC3-negative cells in vitro. These cytotoxic activities seemed to be positively correlated with GPC3 expression levels in the target cells. In addition, T cells expressing the third-generation GPC3-targeted CAR could eradicate HCC xenografts with high level of GPC3 expression and efficiently suppress the growth of HCC xenografts with low GPC3 expression level in vivo. The survival of the mice bearing established orthotopic Huh-7 xenografts was significantly prolonged by the treatment with the third-generation GPC3-targeted CAR T cells.Conclusions: GPC3-targeted CAR T cells could potently eliminate GPC3-positive HCC cells, thereby providing a promising therapeutic intervention for GPC3-positive HCC. Mice housed in an enriched environment display a tumor-resistant phenotype due to eustress stimulation. However, the mechanisms underlying enriched environment–induced protection against cancers remain largely unexplained. In this study, we observed a significant antitumor effect induced by enriched environment in murine pancreatic cancer and lung cancer models. This effect remained intact in T/B lymphocyte-deficient Rag1−/− mice, but was nearly eliminated in natural killer (NK) cell–deficient Beige mice or in antibody-mediated NK-cell–depleted mice, suggesting a predominant role of NK cells in enriched environment–induced tumor inhibition. Exposure to enriched environment enhanced NK-cell activity against tumors and promoted tumoral infiltration of NK cells. Enriched environment increased the expression levels of CCR5 and NKG2D (KLRK1) in NK cells; blocking their function effectively blunted the enriched environment–induced enhancement of tumoral infiltration and cytotoxic activity of NK cells. Moreover, blockade of β-adrenergic signaling or chemical sympathectomy abolished the effects of enriched environment on NK cells and attenuated the antitumor effect of enriched environment. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a complex procedure with the need for sufficient patient anesthesia/sedation while maintaining safety. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of HSK3486 during fiberoptic bronchoscopy.This multicenter, double-blind, randomized, non-inferiority, parallel-group phase 3 trial was conducted in patients who underwent fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Patients randomly received HSK3486 0.4 mg/kg (N = 134) or propofol 2.0 mg/kg (N = 133). The primary efficacy endpoint was the successful rate of fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and secondary efficacy endpoints included successful induction of anesthesia/sedation, duration, time to being fully alert, and time to patient discharge. Safety assessments and drug concentrations were also measured.A total of 267 patients completed fiberoptic bronchoscopy, with a success rate of 100% and a 95% confidence interval of - 2.8 to 2.8% for the difference between the groups, which met the predesigned criteria of - 8%, confirming the non-inferiority of anesthesia/sedation produced by HSK3486 compared to propofol. Among the secondary efficacy endpoints, only time to full alertness (median 8.50 vs. 6.00 min, P = 0.012) and time to discharge (median 13.00 vs. 9.87 min, P = 0.002) were slightly longer in the HSK3486 group. The incidence of adverse events was significant lower in the HSK3486 group (52.6 vs. 76.5%, P0.001) mainly because of less pain on injection (4.4 vs. 39.4%, P0.001) compared to the propofol group. HSK3486 had a similar terminal elimination half-life as propofol.HSK3486 exhibited non-inferiority anesthesia/sedation compared to propofol in patients undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and had a good safety profile with a lower incidence of pain on injection.Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT04111159, registered on 1 October 2019.

The study was conducted to analyze the competitiveness of OCOP standardized clown knife fish products in Hau Giang province. The data were collected from 73 observations involved in the clown knife fish value chain. The research results show that most farmers culture knife fish intensively and the feed cost shares the highest proportion of the total production cost. Processed products from knife fish are mainly boneless fish and fish balls. The OCOP knife fish value chain operated through four main distribution channels and included actors: fish farmers, traders, processors, and retailers. The farmers normally sell fresh knife fish to middleman, accounting for 80.15%. The processing factories create and share the highest proportion of added value. The distribution channel that farmers are linked directly with processors create higher added value than others. The study also analyzed the Porter’s five forces of the knife industry. The study found that there are many potential risks in the farming process, high competitive pressures from substitute products, and limited negotiation ability of both farmers and processors.

Malaria cases have dramatically declined in China along the Myanmar border, attributed mainly to adoption of the 1-3-7 surveillance and response approach. No indigenous cases have been reported in China since 2017. Counties in the middle and southern part of the border area have a higher risk for malaria importation and reestablishment after elimination.

Plant virus diseases seriously affect crop yield, especially tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The development of plant immune activators has been an important direction in the innovation of new pesticides. Therefore, we designed and synthesized a series of trifluoromethyl pyridine piperazine derivatives (A1-A27), and explored the action mechanism of active compound. The antiviral activity test showed that compounds A1, A2, A3, A9, A10, A16, A17 and A21 possessed higher activities than commercialized ningnanmycin. Particularly, the in vivo antiviral activity indicated that compound A16 showed the most potent protective activity toward TMV (EC50 = 18.4 μg/mL) and CMV (EC50 = 347.8 μg/mL), compared to ningnanmycin (50.2 μg /mL for TMV, 359.6 μg/mL for CMV). The activities of defense enzyme, label -free proteomic and qRT-PCR analysis showed that compound A16 could enhance the defensive enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD),polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL), and activate the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway to strenthen the antiviral activities of tobacco. This study provides reliable support for the development of new antiviral pesticides and potential antiviral mechanism.

ImportanceThe survival benefit of laparoscopic total gastrectomy combined with spleen-preserving splenic hilar lymphadenectomy (LSTG) for locally advanced proximal gastric cancer (APGC) without invasion into the greater curvature remains uncertain.ObjectiveTo compare the long-term and short-term efficacy of LSTG (D2 + No. 10 group) and conventional laparoscopic total gastrectomy (D2 group) for patients with APGC that has not invaded the greater curvature.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsIn this open-label, prospective randomized clinical trial, a total of 536 patients with clinical stage cT2 to 4a/N0 to 3/M0 APGC without invasion into the greater curvature were enrolled from January 2015 to October 2018. The final follow-up was on October 31, 2021. Data were analyzed from December 2021 to February 2022.InterventionsEligible patients were randomized to the D2 + No. 10 group or the D2 group.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was 3-year disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary outcomes were 3-year overall survival (OS) and morbidity and mortality within 30 days after surgery.ResultsOf 526 included patients, 392 (74.5%) were men, and the mean (SD) age was 60.6 (9.6) years. A total of 263 patients were included in the D2 + No. 10 group, and 263 were included in the D2 group. The 3-year DFS was 70.3% (95% CI, 64.8-75.8) for the D2 + No. 10 group and 64.3% (95% CI, 58.4-70.2; P = .11) for the D2 group, and the 3-year OS in the D2 + No. 10 group was better than that in the D2 group (75.7% [95% CI, 70.6-80.8] vs 66.5% [95% CI, 60.8-72.2]; P = .02). Multivariate analysis revealed that splenic hilar lymphadenectomy was not an independent protective factor for DFS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.86; 95% CI, 0.63-1.16) or OS (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.59-1.12). Tree growth is the most important factor in determining the carbon sequestration processes of forest ecosystems. However, the growth phenology (seasonal growth pattern) and responses of tree growth to climatic variables vary considerably among different species, especially between deciduous and evergreen species. Thus, it is crucial to explore the seasonal growth patterns of different tree species in relation to climate to better understand the responses of tree physiology to climate changes, especially in mixed-species forest stands. In this study, we monitored the daily basal area increments of 220 individuals belonging to 15 common broadleaved tree species, nine deciduous and six evergreen species, in mixed-species experimental stands in subtropical China and analysed the relationships between radial stem growth and seasonal climate at a high-temporal resolution. We fitted daily increments of stem diameters with four frequently used nonlinear models and chose the best model for each species. The results showed that the evergreen trees grew faster than the deciduous trees, both annually and within the growing season. The tested nonlinear models (Korf, Weibull, logistic and Gompertz) produced good fits for the growth patterns of all species. Overall, the evergreen species began stem growth earlier and finished later during the growing season than that of the deciduous species. Within the growing season, the radial growth of trees in mixed stands containing both types of species was strongly positively correlated with humidity. In spring, increases in both temperature and moisture increased the daily relative basal area increment of all species. Maximum growth rates occurred when the soil water content reached its highest level and gradually decreased when the soil water content decreased. In summer, high temperatures combined with low amounts of precipitation led to heat-induced summer drought, to which the evergreen trees appeared to be more tolerant than the deciduous trees, which was reflected in the reduced stem growth of the latter. These results indicate the different climate-dependent seasonal growth strategies of evergreen and deciduous trees related to the trade-off described by the leaf economics spectrum, i.e., short-lived leaves with higher assimilation rates in deciduous and longer-lived leaves with a greater drought tolerance in evergreen species.

This study evaluated the safety, effectiveness, and feasibility of indocyanine green (ICG) tracing in guiding lymph-node (LN) dissection during laparoscopic D2 radical gastrectomy in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). We retrospectively analyzed data on 313 patients with clinical stage of cT1-4N0-3M0 who underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy after NAC between February 2010 and October 2020 from two hospitals in China. Grouped according to whether ICG was injected. For the ICG group (n = 102) and non-ICG group (n = 211), 1:1 propensity matching analysis was used. After matching, there was no significant difference in the general clinical pathological data between the two groups (ICG vs. non-ICG: 94 vs. 94). The average number of total LN dissections was significantly higher in the ICG group and lower LN non-compliance rate than in the non-ICG group. Subgroup analysis showed that among patients with LN and tumor did not shrink after NAC, the number of LN dissections was significantly more and LN non-compliance rate was lower in the ICG group than in the non-ICG group. Intraoperative blood loss was significantly lesser in the ICG group than in the non-ICG group, while the recovery and complications of the two groups were similar. For patients with poor NAC outcomes, ICG tracing can increase the number of LN dissections during laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, reduce the rate of LN non-compliance, and reduce intraoperative bleeding. Patients with AGC should routinely undergo ICG-guided laparoscopic radical gastrectomy.

Body composition profiles influence the prognosis of several types of cancer; however, the role of body composition in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) after neoadjuvant treatment (NT) has not been well characterized.A total of 213 patients with LAGC who underwent gastrectomy after NT at a high-volume institution from southern China were comprehensively evaluated for primary analysis. Additionally, 170 and 77 patients from Western China and Italy, respectively, were reviewed for external validation. The skeletal muscle index (SMI), skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD), and the subcutaneous as well as the visceral adiposity index were assessed from clinically acquired CT scans at diagnosis and preoperatively.Overall, none of the body composition parameters significantly changed after NT. The pre-NT skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD) and change in SMI (ΔSMI) were both significantly lower in the patients with poor response (tumor regression50%; mean SMD: 43.5 vs 46.5, P = 0.003; mean ΔSMI: -1.0 vs 2.2, P 0.001), and the cutoff values were calculated according to the Youden index as 43.7 and 1.2, respectively. Based on these 2 parameters, a novel model, the Skeletal Muscle Score (SMS), was proposed to predict the pathological response (AUC = 0.764 alone and = 0.822 in combination with the radiological response). Moreover, patients with an SMI loss1.2 had a significantly prolonged drainage tube removal time (mean: 10.0 vs 8.2, P = 0.003) and postoperative hospital stay (mean: 11.1 vs 9.8, P = 0.048), as well as a significantly higher rate of postoperative complications (30.9% vs 16.7%, P = 0.015). In the multivariate analysis, SMI loss1.2 independently predicted poor overall survival (HR: 1.677, 95% CI 1.040-2.704, P = 0.034) and recurrence-free survival (HR: 1.924, 95% CI 1.165-3.175, P = 0.011). ΔSMI was also significantly associated with pathological response, surgical outcomes, and survival in the 2 external cohorts (P all 0.05).For LAGC, the pre-NT SMD and ΔSMI could accurately predict the pathological response after NT. An SMI loss1.2 is closely associated with poorer outcomes and may indicate the need more supportive treatment.

A dual-band antenna with wideband harmonic suppression based on dual-function slot structure is presented for the future microwave and millimeter-wave communication system in this letter. In the low-frequency band, the slot serves as the radiator, and both two parasitic patches and four slot-stubs are also introduced in the slot to increase the bandwidth. In the high-frequency band, this slot works as the feeding structure, which excites the 2 × 4 millimeter-wave patch array. Meanwhile, the wideband harmonic suppression between dual frequency bands is achieved by loading both four open-stubs on this slot and a T-stub in this slot. A prototype is fabricated and measured to validate the design, which covers a dual band of 5 and 27 GHz. Their measured –10 dB relatively impedance bandwidth is 21.9% and 13.7%, respectively. Moreover, the measured reflection coefficient is higher than –1 dB and the measured gain is lower than –10 dBi from 7 to 21.5 GHz, showing the characteristic of good harmonic suppression.
