Hydrogels are promising material for wound dressing and tissue engineering. However, owing to their low tissue adhesion in a moist environment and lack of flexibility, hydrogels are still not widely applied in movable parts, such as joints. Herein, we report a dual-crosslinked hydrogel adhesive using a dopamine-modified and acrylate-terminated crosslinker, tri(ethylene glycol) diacrylate-dopamine crosslinker (TDC). The covalent crosslinking was formed by photopolymerization between acrylic acid (AA) and TDC, and the noncovalent crosslinking was formed by intermolecular dopamine-dopamine and dopamine-AA interactions. Our resultant hydrogel demonstrated strong tissue adhesion in a moist environment (approximately 71 kPa) and high mechanical resilience (approximately 94%) with immediate recovery at a 200% strain rate. Moreover, it accelerated wound healing upon dressing the wound site properly. Our study provides the potential for advanced polymer synthesis by introducing a functional crosslinking agent.

Introduction: Early recognition and risk stratification of cardiovascular events are necessary in patients after ischemic stroke. Recent evidence suggests that elevated high-sensitive cardiac troponin is a predictor of mortality and vascular events. Therefore, we aimed to explore the prognostic role of high-sensitive cardiac troponin I (hs-TnI) on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in patients after ischemic stroke. Methods: From August 2014 to July 2017, 1,506 patients with acute ischemic stroke were pulled consecutively in a retrospective single-center registry. Of these, 1,019 patients were selected and classified into the elevated or non-elevated hs-TnI groups according to hs-TnI level of 99th percentile upper reference limit (URL) at the time of admission for ischemic stroke. The primary outcome was a major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) during follow-up. Results: Among 1,019 patients, 708 patients were non-elevated hs-TnI group (p < 0.01), all-cause mortality (adjusted HR: 4.15; 95% CI: 2.47–6.99; p < 0.01) and readmission caused by coronary revascularization (adjusted HR: 3.12; 95% CI: 1.41–6.90; p < 0.01), heart failure (adjusted HR: 2.76; 95% CI: 1.38–5.51; p < 0.01), and stroke (adjusted HR: 1.73; 95% CI: 1.07–2.78; p = 0.02) compared with the non-elevated hs-TnI group. Conclusions: Elevated hs-TnI is independently associated with higher mortality and cardiac and cerebrovascular events in patients with ischemic stroke and may serve as a valuable prognostic factor in management after ischemic stroke.

Background Limited data are available for risk stratification in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and combined heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). We aimed to explore the prognostic utility of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) in patients with newly detected AF and concomitant HFpEF. Methods From August 2014 to December 2016, 2,361 patients with newly detected AF were polled in a retrospective single-center registry. Of which, 634 patients were eligible for HFpEF diagnosis (HFA-PEFF score ≥ 5) and 165 patients were excluded with exclusion criteria. Finally, 469 patients are classified into elevated or non-elevated hs-cTnI groups based on the 99th percentile upper reference limit (URL). The primary outcome was the incidence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) during follow-up. Results In 469 patients, 295 were stratified into the non-elevated hs-cTnI group (p = 0.03) and coronary revascularization-caused readmission (adjusted HR, 3.86; 95% CI, 1.39–15.09; p = 0.02) compared with the non-elevated hs-cTnI group. The incidence of heart failure-caused readmission tended to occur more frequently in the elevated hs-cTnI group (8.5% versus 15.5%; adjusted HR, 1.52; 95% CI, 0.86–2.67; p = 0.08). Conclusions One-fifth of patients with AF and concomitant HFpEF experienced MACCE during follow-up, and elevated hs-cTnI was independently associated with higher risk of MACCE, as driven by heart failure and revascularization-caused readmission. This finding suggested that hs-cTnI may be a useful tool in individualized risk stratification of future cardiovascular events in patients with AF and concomitant HFpEF.

Background Despite the benefit of culprit‐only percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the CULPRIT‐SHOCK (Culprit Lesion Only PCI Versus Multi‐vessel PCI in Cardiogenic Shock) trial, the optimal revascularization strategy for refractory cardiogenic shock (CS) requiring mechanical circulatory support devices remains controversial. This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes between the culprit‐only and immediate multivessel PCI strategies in patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by CS who underwent venoarterial‐extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before revascularization. Methods and Results This study included patient‐pooled data from the RESCUE (Retrospective and Prospective Observational Study to Investigate Clinical Outcomes and Efficacy of Left Ventricular Assist Devices for Korean Patients With Cardiogenic Shock) and SMC‐ECMO (Samsung Medical Center–Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) registries. A total of 315 patients with acute myocardial infarction with multivessel disease who underwent venoarterial‐extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before revascularization attributable to refractory CS were included in this analysis. The study population was classified into culprit‐only versus immediate multivessel PCI according to nonculprit lesion treatment strategies. The primary end point was 30‐day mortality or renal‐replacement therapy, and the key secondary end point was 12‐month follow‐up mortality. Among the study population, 175 (55.6%) underwent culprit‐only PCI and 140 (44.4%) underwent immediate multivessel PCI. Compared with culprit‐only PCI, immediate multivessel PCI was associated with significantly lower risks of 30‐day mortality or renal‐replacement therapy (68.0% versus 54.3%; P =0.018) and all‐cause mortality during 12 months of follow‐up (59.5% versus 47.5%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.689 [95% CI, 0.506–0.939]; P =0.018) in patients with acute myocardial infarction and CS who underwent venoarterial‐extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before revascularization. These results were also consistent in the 99 pairs of propensity score–matched population (60.6% versus 43.6%; HR, 0.622 [95% CI, 0.420–0.922]; P =0.018). Conclusions Among patients with acute myocardial infarction with multivessel disease complicated by advanced CS requiring venoarterial‐extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before revascularization, immediate multivessel PCI was associated with lower incidences of 30‐day mortality or renal replacement therapy and 12‐month follow‐up mortality, compared with culprit‐only PCI. We investigate the interaction between two magnetic layers separated with a normal metal insertion layer (Ti, Pt, and Ru) using x-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR). We measure the amplitude and phase of the ferromagnetic resonance of both layers. Our results indicate that a ferromagnetic exchange coupling between two layers is a dominant coupling mechanism for a thick insertion metal layer. Based on the exchange coupling model, we extract the smallest value of the indirect exchange coefficient of 1.2 μJ/m2, which corresponds to an exchange field of about 0.36 mT. While this value is difficult to measure with other experimental tools, we were able to measure the small value because XFMR detects a resonance phenomenon of a thin layer generated by an oscillating indirect exchange and the Oersted fields with a phase and layer resolved observation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia developing in post-operative patients. Limited data are available regarding pre-operative risk factors and prognostic impact of post-operative AF (POAF) following hip fracture surgery (HFS) in Korean population.We aimed to investigate the incidence, predictors, and hospital prognosis of POAF in HFS patients.This study included 245 patients without history of AF who underwent HFS between August 2014 and November 2016. POAF was defined as new-onset AF that occurred during hospitalization after HFS.Twenty patients (8.2%) experienced POAF after HFS. POAF developed on median post-operative day 2 (interquartile range, 1-3). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that age [odds ratio (OR), 1.111; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.022-1.209], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR, 6.352; 95%CI, 1.561-25.841) and E/e' ratio (OR, 1.174; 95%CI, 1.002-1.376) were significant predictors of POAF. Patients with POAF had a significantly higher intensive care unit admission rate (55.0%POAF was frequently developed in elderly patients following HFS. Age, COPD and elevated E/e' ratio were found as significant predictors of POAF in HFS patients. Patients with POAF significantly experienced intensive care unit admission and incident congestive heart failure during hospitalization.

In the present study, the application of suitable thermal and nonthermal pretreatment methods was explored to develop a dried products comprising onion and garlic slices. Pretreatment was performed via blanching for 30 sec, steaming for 1 min, dipping in warm water (45°C) for 30 min, and dipping in cold water (8°C) for 1 hr. Furthermore, physicochemical and microbiological analyses were performed in conjunction with sensory evaluations. The group subjected to pretreatment via cold-water dipping exhibited the lowest moisture content and water activity with a negligible redness, yellowness, and browning index. Furthermore, the results of sensory evaluation revealed that this group exhibited relatively high color and overall acceptability. The group subjected to pretreatment via blanching presented severe browning and shape distortion. The samples in the group subjected to pretreatment via cold-water dipping did not exhibit a significant difference in pH; furthermore, the number of microorganisms during storage was lower than that in the control group. It was concluded that the hot-air drying of onion and garlic slices after cold-water dipping resulted in an increase in drying efficiency and the suppression of browning, without inducing major component changes. The facile technique demonstrated in the present study is expected to be fast and cost-effective, thereby facilitating practical application in farms.

Displays in electronic devices visualize digital information, which is essential for humans to ultimately understand and use the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Along with the evolution of several electrical components for flexible displays, developing flexible pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) is also important. In this study, a pattern of crosslinking density was applied to a PSA during the ultraviolet (UV) curing process to secure adhesion, transparency, stress relaxation, and supplement the strain recovery performance. We measured the modulus of each pattern region by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confirmed whether the UV pattern PSA was prepared through the implementation of differential crosslinking density. Additionally, we measured dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) strain recovery test, rheometer, peel strength, probe tack, and transmittance to confirm the effect of the given crosslinking density pattern on the overall physical properties of PSA.

In this study, fourteen types of biochar produced using seven biomasses at temperatures 300 °C and 600 °C were screened for phenolics (furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) removal. Eucheuma spinosum biochar (EB-BC 600) showed higher adsorption capacity to furfural (258.94±3.2 mg/g) and HMF (222.81±2.3 mg/g). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments interpreted that EB-BC 600 biochar followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model for both furfural and HMF adsorption. Different hydrolysates were detoxified using EB-BC 600 biochar and used as feedstock for engineered Escherichia coli. An increased polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production with detoxified barley biomass hydrolysate (DBBH: 1.71±0.07 g PHA/L), detoxified miscanthus biomass hydrolysate (DMBH: 0.87±0.03 g PHA/L) and detoxified pine biomass hydrolysate (DPBH: 1.28±0.03 g PHA/L) was recorded, which was 2.8, 6.4 and 3.4 folds high as compared to undetoxified hydrolysates. This study reports the mechanism involved in furfural and HMF removal using biochar and valorization of hydrolysate into PHA.

This review aimed to quantify the effect of therapeutic application of virtual reality (VR) on cognitive function in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We searched for randomized controlled trials involving VR in the interventions provided to individuals with MCI. After searching four international electronic databases, we analyzed six studies involving 279 individuals with MCI. RevMan 5.4 was used for quality assessment and quantitative analysis. Therapeutic application of VR in individuals with MCI resulted in a significant improvement in cognitive function (mean difference = −1.46; 95% confidence interval: −2.53 to −0.39; heterogeneity: χ2 = 970.56, df = 18, I2 = 98%; and overall effect: Z = 2.67, p = 0.008). However, there was no significant improvement in the subcategories such as global cognition, working memory, executive function, memory function, and attention. In conclusion, feedback stimulation through VR has a potential value in improving cognitive function in individuals with MCI. However, on the basis of the results of the subcategories, a personalized VR program is required for the individual subcategories of cognitive function.

Due to its topological protection, the magnetic skyrmion has been intensively studied for both fundamental aspects and spintronics applications. However, despite recent advancements in skyrmion research, the deterministic creation of isolated skyrmions in a generic perpendicularly magnetized film is still one of the most essential and challenging techniques. Here, we present a method to create magnetic skyrmions in typical perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) films by applying a magnetic field pulse and a method to determine the magnitude of the required external magnetic fields. Furthermore, to demonstrate the usefulness of this result for future skyrmion research, we also experimentally study the PMA dependence on the minimum size of skyrmions. Although field-driven skyrmion generation is unsuitable for device application, this result can provide an easier approach for obtaining isolated skyrmions, making skyrmion-based research more accessible.

Clinical implications of systemic atherosclerosis in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) remain unclear. This study investigated the association between polyvascular disease (PVD) and clinical outcome in CS patients.A total of 1247 CS patients was enrolled from the RESCUE registry, a multicenter, observational cohort between January 2014 and December 2018. They were divided into two groups according to presence of PVD, defined as ≥2 coexistence of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, or cerebrovascular disease. Primary outcome was all-cause death during 12 months of follow-up.136 (10.9%) patients were diagnosed with PVD. The risk of 12-month all-cause death was significantly higher in the PVD group than in the non-PVD group (54.4% versus 40.4%, adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.69, p = 0.034). There was a significant interaction between PVD and vasoactive inotropic score (VIS) (p for interaction = 0.014). Among the 945 patients with VIS84, PVD was associated with a higher risk of 12-month all-cause death (unadjusted HR 1.77, 95% CI 1.30-2.41, p = 0.030); among the 302 patients with VIS ≥84, the incidence of 12-month all-cause death was similar between the PVD and non-PVD groups (unadjusted HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.68-1.56, p = 0.301).Presence of PVD was associated with 12-month all-cause mortality in patients with CS, especially for less severe forms of CS patients with VIS84. Vaccination has been recently attracted as one of the most successful medical treatments of the prevalence of many infectious diseases. Mucosal vaccination has been interested in many researchers because mucosal immune responses play part in the first line of defense against pathogens. However, mucosal vaccination should find out an efficient antigen delivery system because the antigen should be protected from degradation and clearance, it should be targeted to mucosal sites, and it should stimulate mucosal and systemic immunity. Accordingly, mucoadhesive polymeric particles among the polymeric particles have gained much attention because they can protect the antigen from degradation, prolong the residence time of the antigen at the target site, and control the release of the loaded vaccine, and results in induction of mucosal and systemic immune responses. In this review, we discuss advances in the development of several kinds of mucoadhesive polymeric particles for mucosal vaccine delivery.

The purpose of this study is to derive and analyze the static, dynamic, and muscle strength measurement items of amputees in Korea for the design of large-scale agricultural work equipment considering their altered physical characteristics and functions. A total of 46 amputees participated in the study, with 34 males and 12 females in the age ranging between 30 and 60 years. Thirty items were derived for the measurement items considering the designing of the large-scale agricultural work equipment. The measurement results were presented as 5%tiles, 50%tiles, and 95%tiles values by item and gender, and t-test verification was performed on gender basis. There was a statistically significant difference between the men and women in most of the measurement items. Our results indicate that the male data should be used for the spatial design of equipment with static measurement items and the design of the controllers with dynamic measurement items, whereas the female data should be applied in the designing of parts that require muscle strength, such as accelerators. The results of this study can provide a basic data for developing the design of large-scale agricultural work equipment and machines that are usable and convenient for amputees in Korea, and in exploring the anthropometric measurements of the subtypes of people with physical disabilities.

Background: Although the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and heart failure (HF) risk is known, large longitudinal studies that can permit causal inferences are limited. In this study, we investigated metabolic status as a risk factor for HF in middle-aged men and women and evaluated sex differences in various risk factors for HF using nationwide real-world data.Methods: Data obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service from 2009 to 2016 were analyzed. A total of 2151597 middle-age subjects (1149642 men and 1001955 women) (between 50 and 59 years old) without a history of Cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease or malignancy were enrolled. Subjects were divided into three groups according to the number of MetS components: 0 (normal), 1–2 (Pre‐MetS) or 3–5 (MetS) based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the association between MetS and incident HF after adjusting for clinical risk factors.Results: At baseline, MetS existed in 23,77% of men and 10.58% of women. Pre-MetS and MetS increased the risk of HF: the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of pre-MetS was 1.508 (1.287-1.767) in men and 1.395 (1.158-1.681) in women; the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of MetS was 1.711 (1.433-2.044) in men and 2.144 (1.674-2.747) in women. Current smoking, low hemoglobin level, underweight (BMIConclusions: This study confirmed that pre-MetS and MetS are risk factors for HF in middle-aged men and women. The effect of MetS on the occurrence of HF was stronger in women than in men. Pre-MetS was also a predictor of HF but was associated with a lower risk than MetS.

Aims This study aimed to investigate differences in baseline and treatment characteristics, and in‐hospital mortality according to the aetiologies of cardiogenic shock in patients undergoing veno‐arterial‐extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA‐ECMO). Methods and results The RESCUE registry is a multicentre, observational cohort that includes 1247 patients with cardiogenic shock from 12 centres. A total of 496 patients requiring VA‐ECMO were finally selected, and the study population was stratified by cardiogenic shock aetiology [ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM, n = 342) and non‐ICM (NICM, n = 154)]. The primary outcome of interest was in‐hospital mortality. Sensitivity analyses including propensity‐score matching adjustments were performed. Background Several studies have shown that obesity is associated with better outcomes in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS). Although this phenomenon, the “obesity paradox,” reportedly manifests differently based on sex in other disease entities, it has not yet been investigated in patients with CS. Methods and Results A total of 1227 patients with CS from the RESCUE (Retrospective and Prospective Observational Study to Investigate Clinical Outcomes and Efficacy of Left Ventricular Assist Device for Korean Patients With Cardiogenic Shock) registry in Korea were analyzed. The study population was classified into obese and nonobese groups according to Asian Pacific criteria (BMI ≥25.0 kg/m 2 for obese). The clinical impact of obesity on in‐hospital mortality according to sex was analyzed using logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline curves. The in‐hospital mortality rate was significantly lower in obese men than nonobese men (34.2% versus 24.1%, respectively; P =0.004), while the difference was not significant in women (37.3% versus 35.8%, respectively; P =0.884). As a continuous variable, higher BMI showed a protective effect in men; conversely, BMI was not associated with clinical outcomes in women. Compared with patients with normal weight, obesity was associated with a decreased risk of in‐hospital death in men (multivariable‐adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.63; CI, 0.43–0.92 [ P =0.016]), but not in women (multivariable‐adjusted OR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.55–1.61 [ P =0.828]). The interaction P value for the association between BMI and sex was 0.023. Conclusions The obesity paradox exists and apparently occurs in men among patients with CS. Background and Objectives: Rotator cuff tear is the most common cause of shoulder pain. If nonsurgical treatment fails, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) is recommended. Since the standards for rehabilitation after ARCR are not clear, various rehabilitation methods have been suggested. This study intends to investigate the effect on the recovery phase of ARCR patients through a postoperative rehabilitation protocol (PRP) that considers the healing process and rehabilitation trend. Materials and Methods: This single-arm, pragmatic intervention study was conducted on 30 patients, two weeks postoperative day (POD) after ARCR. ARCR patients received intervention for six weeks from POD two-week, and pain intensity and shoulder function were evaluated at two-week intervals until POD 12-week, and range of motion (ROM) was evaluated at POD four-week and eight-week. Results: In this study, all variables improved over time (p < 0.05). As a result of the comparison between time points, a significant improvement was found in shoulder function at POD 6-week. In addition, the effect size had a large effect on ROM (flexion, scaption flexion, abduction, and external rotation) and shoulder function. Conclusions: Management through the PRP based on scientific evidence in the strategy of postoperative rehabilitation of patients with ARCR is effective for pain intensity, ROM, and shoulder function.
