We have probed the crystalline electric-field ground states of pure $|J = 7/2, J_z = \pm 5/2\rangle$ as well as the anisotropic $c$-$f$ hybridization in both valence fluctuating systems $\alpha$- and $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$ by linear polarization dependence of angle-resolved core level photoemission spectroscopy. Interestingly, the small but distinct difference between \abyb was found in the polar angle dependence of linear dichroism, indicating the difference in the anisotropy of $c$-$f$ hybridization which may be essential to a heavy Fermi liquid state in $\alpha$-YbAlB$_4$ and a quantum critical state in $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$.

We performed an X-ray diffraction experiment while palladium bulk absorbed and desorbed hydrogen to investigate the behavior of the crystalline lattice during the phase transition between the $\alpha$ phase and $\beta$ phase. Fast growth of $\beta$ phase was observed around x=0.1 and x=0.45 of PdH$_x$. In addition, slight compression of the lattice at high hydrogen concentration and increase in the lattice constant and the line width of the $\alpha$ phase after a cycle of absorption and desorption of hydrogen was observed. Recently, we established a collagen-binding growth factor consisting of epidermal growth factor and the fibronectin collagen-binding domain (FNCBD-EGF). FNCBD-EGF is a biologically active fusion protein that could stably bind to collagen materials, and exert its growth factor activity even after collagen binding. In this study, we investigated the concept that FNCBD moiety with high collagen affinity may enhance the effective local concentration of EGF at the site of administration in the following tissues: skin wounds, catheter-injured arteries, and hind limb muscles. In an animal model of impaired wound healing, application of FNCBD-EGF in combination with collagen gel induced granulation tissue formation in the wounds due to its sustained retention. In the injured artery, infused FNCBD-EGF remained bound to collagen exposed on the injured tissues even after blood circulation was restored. Injection of the fusion protein into the hind limbs revealed that our delivery system was effective for direct administration to muscular tissue.

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) using synchrotron radiation, X-ray free electron lasers (X-FELs), high harmonic generation, soft X-ray lasers, and optical lasers has found broad applications across several disciplines. An active research direction in CDI is to determine the structure of single particles with intense, femtosecond X-FEL pulses based on diffraction-before-destruction scheme. However, single-shot 3D structure determination has not been experimentally realized yet. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of single-shot 3D structure determination of individual nanocrystals using ~10 femtosecond X-FEL pulses. Coherent diffraction patterns are collected from high-index-faceted nanocrystals, each struck by a single X-FEL pulse. Taking advantage of the symmetry of the nanocrystal, we reconstruct the 3D structure of each nanocrystal from a single-shot diffraction pattern at ~5.5 nm resolution. As symmetry exists in many nanocrystals and virus particles, this method can be applied to 3D structure studies of such particles at nanometer resolution on femtosecond time scales., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Hard X-ray and extremely low energy bulk-sensitive photoelectron spectroscopy has been performed in the temperature range of 100-330 K for Fe3O4. In the high temperature phase just above the Verwey transition, the intensity at the Fermi level (EF) is still negligible, but it increases gradually with further increasing the temperature (250 K, 330 K) in consistence with the temperature dependence of the conductivity. We report the bulk sensitive Hard X-ray (hv=5.95keV) core level photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the intrinsic electronic structure of strained (La0.85Ba0.15)MnO3 thin films. In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrained film with 300nm thickness. Cluster calculations revealed that the intensity corresponded to the density of the state at the Fermi level relating to the magnitude of the ferromagnetic order. Speech recognition has of late become a practical technology for real world applications. Aiming at speech-driven text retrieval, which facilitates retrieving information with spoken queries, we propose a method to integrate speech recognition and retrieval methods. Since users speak contents related to a target collection, we adapt statistical language models used for speech recognition based on the target collection, so as to improve both the recognition and retrieval accuracy. Experiments using existing test collections combined with dictated queries showed the effectiveness of our method.

Collagen is generally incapable of capturing polypeptides such as growth factors in a specific manner. In this study, we established a collagen-binding growth factor (FNCBD-EGF) consisting of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and the fibronectin collagen-binding domain. A typical yield of FNCBD-EGF was approximately 200 microg/ml culture in an Escherichia coli expression system. This fusion protein bound to gelatin and fibrillar collagen sponges, and the bound protein was not effectively eluted even with 2 M NaCl. In addition, FNCBD-EGF bound to type I, II, III, or IV collagen-coated plates, and the specificity of binding was confirmed by competitive inhibition using fibronectin. FNCBD-EGF substantially stimulated cell growth after binding to collagen-coated culture plates, whereas EGF had no effect, indicating that this fusion protein acted as a collagen-associated growth factor. In an animal model of impaired wound healing, FNCBD-EGF, but not EGF, was retained with collagen sponges at wound sites 4 d after implantation, and repair of epidermis was observed underneath the sponges. These results suggested that our fusion protein with high collagen affinity would be useful for wound healing.

Objectives It is necessary to examine the details about the in-hospital mortality after primary stenting for ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the present drug-eluting stent (DES) era by using the various devices such as thrombectomy catheter and distal protection device. Therefore, this single centre, retrospective, and non-randomised study was conducted to clarify the predictors of in-hospital mortality in consecutive 901 first STEMIs in these 7 years. Methods The incidence of in-hospital mortality was 3.6% (n=32). The percentages of DES, IABP, IVUS, thrombectomy catheter, and distal protection device use were 81.1, 16.0, 96.3, 76.9 and 71.9%, respectively. The incidence of early definite stent thrombosis was 0.33% (n=3). The percentages of LV dysfunction (EF Conclusions In the present DES era, the incidence of in-hospital mortality was only a few percentages. However, the optimal method besides primary stenting for the STEMI patient with aging and extend infarction needs to be further explored.

RIKEN and the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) have successfully produced a beam of X-ray laser light with a wavelength of 1.2 Angstroms, the shortest ever measured. This record-breaking light was created using SACLA, a cutting-edge Xray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility unveiled by RIKEN in February 2011 in Harima, Japan. SACLA (which stands for SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser) opens a window into the structure of atoms and molecules at a level of detail never seen before.

Mapping the large neural networks of animal and human brains is a fundamental but so far elusive task, because of the massive amount of data and the consequent prohibitively long image taking and processing times. We developed an effective strategy called "AXON" (Accelerated X-ray Observation of Neurons) to solve this problem. AXON can achieve comprehensive whole-brain mapping within a reasonable time by combining fast image taking and processing, plus two other critical performances: three-dimensional (3D) imaging with high and isotropic spatial resolution, and multi-scale resolution. We successfully tested this strategy with coordinated experiments at four synchrotron facilities in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea on two animal models, Drosophila and mouse. Its performances notably allowed full 3D mapping of the Drosophila brain in a few days. With reasonable improvements, AXON can deliver full mapping of large animal and human brains on a realistic time scale of a few years.

We have identified an inexpensive, readily available, mechanically stable, extremely smooth, elastic, and mechanically uniform plastic suitable for thin film X-ray optics. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is easily deformed without losing its elastic properties or surface smoothness. Most important, PET can be coated with mono- or multilayers that reflect X-rays at grazing incidence. We have used these properties to produce X-ray optics made either as a concentric nest of cylinders or as a spiral. We have produced accurately formed shells in precisely machined vacuum mandresl or used a pin and wheel structure to form a continuously wound spiral. The wide range of medical, industrial and scientific applications for our technology includes: a monochromatic X-ray collimater for medical diagnostics, a relay optic to transport an X-ray beam from the target in a scanning electron microscop0e to a lithium-drifted silicon and microcalorimeter detectors and a satellite mounted telescope to collect celestial X-rays. A wide variety of mono- and multilayer coatings allow X-rays up to ~100 keV to be reflected. Our paper presents data from a variety of diagnostic measurements on the properties of the PET foil and imaging results form single- and multi-shell lenses.
