Abstract

H. Sugai, et al., Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. Abstract

The Hubble parameter H0 still not very well measured. Although the Hubble Key Project, Chandra and WMAP gave good estimates, the uncertainties remain quite large. In this brief report, we suggest an original and independent method to derive a lower limit on H0 using the absorption of very high energy gamma-rays by the cosmic infrared background. With conservative hypothesis, we obtain H0>74 km/s/Mpc at the 68% confidence level, which favors the upper end of the intervals allowed by dedicated experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. accepted by JETP; Gauss-Bonnet gravity provides one of the most promising frameworks to study curvature corrections to the Einstein action in supersymmetric string theories, while avoiding ghosts and keeping second order field equations. Although Schwarzschild-type solutions for Gauss-Bonnet black holes have been known for long, the Kerr-Gauss-Bonnet metric was missing. In this paper, a five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet solution is analytically derived for spinning black holes and the related thermodynamical properties are briefly outlined.

Abstract

We consider the possible detection of parity violation at the linear level in gravity using polarized anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. Since such a parity violation would lead to non-zero TB and EB correlations, this makes those odd-parity angular power spectra a potential probe of parity violation in the gravitational sector. These spectra are modeled incorporating the impact of lensing and we explore their possible detection in the context of small-scale (balloon-borne or ground-based) experiments and a future satellite mission dedicated to B-mode detection. We assess the statistical uncertainties on their reconstruction using mode-counting and a (more realistic) pure pseudospectrum estimator approach. Those uncertainties are then translated into constraints on the level of parity asymmetry. We found that detecting chiral gravity is impossible for ongoing small-scale experiments. However, for a satellite-like mission, a parity asymmetry of at least 50% could be detected at 68% of confidence level, and a parity asymmetry of 100% is measurable with at least a confidence level of 95%. We also assess the impact of a possible miscalibration of the orientation of the polarized detectors, leading to spurious TB and EB cross-correlations. We show that in the context of pseudospectrum estimation of the angular power spectra, self-calibration of this angle could significantly reduce the statistical significance of the measured level of parity asymmetry (by e.g. a factor ~2.4 for a miscalibration angle of 1 degree). For chiral gravity and assuming a satellite mission dedicated to primordial B-mode, a non detection of the TB and EB correlation would translate into an upper bound on parity violation of 39% at 95% confidence level for a tensor-to-scalar ratio of 0.2, excluding values of the (imaginary) Barbero-Immirzi parameter comprised between 0.2 and 4.9 at 95% CL., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

This ultrastructural study of the entodiniomorphid Troglodytella gorillae provides information on the constitution of the cortex, which is composed of the plasma membrane, a thick epiplasm, microtubules, and a microfibrillar ecto-endoplasmic limit (cortex type I). This observation allows us to group the family Troglodytellidae with the families Cycloposthiidae and Ophryoscolecidae. These 3 families should be separated from the families Tripalmariidae and Spirodiniidae which possess a more complex cortex, with longitudinal dense tracts inserted between the microtubular layer and the microfibrillar ecto-endoplasmic limit (type II). Terminology is discussed.

Abstract

This letter aims at showing that the observation of evaporating black holes should allow distinguishing between the usual Hawking behavior and Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) expectations. We present a full Monte-Carlo simulation of the evaporation in LQG and statistical tests that discriminate between competing models. Abstract

The primordial spectrum of cosmological tensor perturbations is considered as a possible probe of quantum gravity effects. Together with string theory, loop quantum gravity is one of the most promising frameworks to study quantum effects in the early universe. We show that the associated holonomy correction should modify the potential seen by gravitational waves during the inflationary amplification. Abstract

In this brief note, we investigate some possible experimental consequences of the de-Sitter or Anti-de-Sitter background spacetime structure for d-dimensional evaporating black holes. Possible observational signatures in Large Hadron Collider (LHC) events are considered in the framework of the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali (ADD) braneworld model. Lower bounds on the value of the bulk cosmological constant required to produce visible effects are derived thanks to a dynamical Monte-Carlo simulation. This preliminary study has to be refined by the accurate computation of the greybody factors. Abstract

Summary: Intracellular and extracellular recordings were obtained from the CA1 region and gyrus dentatus of human hippocampi that had been surgically removed for treatment of intractable seizures. Pathologic diagnoses were obtained, and electrophysiologic results were correlated with degree of principal cell loss (sclerosis) in the regions studied. Extracellular field potentials were absent or smaller in amplitude, with abnormal characteristics, in sclerotic regions. In all regions, regardless of the degree of sclerosis, individual pyramidal or granule cells could be penetrated. These neurons showed apparently normal electrophysiologic characteristics and intact excitatory synaptic input. No signs of hyperexcitability were observed. ReSUMe Des enregistrements intra et extra-cellulaires ont ete obtenus a partir de la region CAI et le gyrus tentatus d'hippocampus hu-mains Apres resection chirurgicale en traitement de crises re-belles. Les diagnostics anatomo-pathologiques ont ete obtenus, et les resultats electrophysiologiques ont ete correles au degre de perte en cellules principales (sclerose) dans les regions etudiees. Les potentiels de champ extracellulaires etaient absents ou d'amplitude diminuee, avec des caracteristiques anormales au niveau des regions sclerosees. Se estudiaron los diagnosticos patologicos y los resultados electrofisiologicos correlacionCindolos con el grado de perdida de celulas principales (esclerosis) en la regiones estudiadas. Los potenciales de campo extracelular estaban ausentes o muy reducidos en su amplitud con caracteristicas anormales en las regiones escleroticas. En todas las regiones independienternente del grado de esclerosis, fue posible penetrar las celulas piramidales y las granulosas. Estas neuronas rnostraron, aparenternente, caracteristicas electrofisiologicas normales y una inforrnacion sinaptica excitatoria intacta. No se registraron signos de hiperexcitabilidad. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Es wurden intrazellulare und extrazellulare Ableitungen von der CAI Region und aus dem Gyrus dentatus von menschlichen Hippokampi gewonnen, die als Resultat einer chirurgischen Behandlung von unheilbaren Anfallen entfernt wurden. Die pathologischen Diagnosen wurden gestellt und die elektrophysiologischen Resultate rnit dem Ausrnaβ, des Zellnntergangs (Sklerose) in den untersuchten Gegenden korreliert. Die extrazellularen Feldpotentiale in den sklerotischen Gegenden waren entweder ganz verschwunden oder hatten kleinere Amplituden mit abnormalen Charakteristika. Unabhangig von dem Ausmaβ der Sklerose konnten in allen Gegenden individuelle Pyrarniden-oder Granulazellen abgeleitet werden. Diese Zellen zeigten offensichtlich normale elektrophysiologische Charakteristika und einen intakten exzitatorischen synaptischen Input. Zeichen einer Hyperexcitabilitat wurden nicht gesehen.

Abstract

As both the ultrastructure and function of flagella and cilia have been for the main part remarkably conserved during Eukaryote, evolution, the question arises as to whether the variations observed at the organite ultrastural level, or at the level of the development of a flagellar or ciliary cellular system could be considered as systematic or phylogenetic criteria. With regard to the fundamental structure, the known variations concern: 1) the kinetosome (length, position and number of cartwheels, number of triplets, and respective lengths of the microtubules); 2) the transition zone (various structural types); 3) the axoneme (number of doublets, central tubules, arms); 4) the paraxonemal formations (presence, position, structure); 5) the membrane (intramembranous particles; intramembranous particles; addition of components, mastigonemes, scales); 6) the fibres associated with the kinetosomes. Some of these variations are characteristic of taxa, and are considered as phylogenetic markers. Regarding the variations in the number of ciliary or flagellar units per cell, the following can be distinguished: cells with only one kinetosome (Ks), carrying one flagellum; cells with 2 neighbouring Ks (primary Ks = 2A), only one Ks, or the 2 Ks, bearing a flagellum; cells with numerous flagella or cilia. We consider that this configuration can result from: a) addition of new Ks around the primary Ks, forming a primary group (PG): either by replication of the primary couple (2 × 2A inKarotomorpha;2 × 2A inPhaeopolykrikos;4(2 × 2A) inPolkrikos), or by addition of new Ks (N) without copy or replication of the primary Ks (2A + 2N inPolytomella; 2A +3N inTetratrichomonas; 2A + 3N inTetratrichomonas; 2A + 4N inHexamastix; 2A + 6N inPyramimonas octopus). b) amplification of each constituent of the primordial couple in opalinids. c) amplification of the primary group [yx(AA+ 2N) withy = 2 in diplomonadida andy > 2 in calonymphidae. d) appearance in morphogenetic fields situated outside the primary group (but possibly related to it) of new Ks which then form secondary groups (SG) where they are arranged in polarized rows composed of juxtaposed cortical units (monokinetids). In this case, PG can be of type 2A+2N (1PG+1SG in lophomonadida; 1PG+2SG in some trichonymphina), or can lose some Ks, resulting in reduced PG (4 reduced PG+4GS inStaurojoenina, n reduced PG +nGS in spirotrichonymphina). The PG may even disappear; either partially leaving remnants in the form of MTOCs inStephanopogon, or completely, as in cilliates where the general ciliature would represent on the SG. From the above, it is seen that: a) the pluriflagellar state in protists depends on only a small number of factors; b) the same factors are used in different groups; c) different states have been obtained within different groups. An analysis of the respective evolution of kinetosomes and centrioles is proposed.

Abstract

Oscillospira guillermondii , tres particuliere par son organisation en trichome, possede cependant des caracteres typiques de bacterie Gram-positive (enveloppes, sporulation). La capsule enveloppe l'ensemble du trichome, la paroi longe la capsule, separe les cellules et forme des septums primaires et secondaires repoussant devant eux la membrane plasmique. Les reserves cytoplasmiques sont des polysaccharides acides. Les relations membrane plasmiquenoyau y sont nettes. L'etat de predivision permanente des cellules est une particularite qui a sans doute des consequences importantes sur les modalites de separation des chromosomes-fils apres replication. Enfin, la paroi bacterienne participe a la formation du cortex de la spore, qui, par ailleurs, s'edifie comme chez Clostridium et Bacillus .

The subkingdom Protozoa now inclues over 65,000 named species, of which over half are fossil and approximately 10,000 are parasitic. Among living species, this includes approximately 250 parasitic and 11,300 free-living sarcodines (of which approximately 4,600 are foraminiferids); approximately 1,8000 parasitic and 5,100 free-living flagellates; approximately 5,600 parasitic "Sporozoa" (including Apicomplexa, Microspora, Myxospora, and Ascetospora); and approximately 2,5000 parasitic and 4,700 free-living ciliates. There are undoubtedly thousands more still unnamed. Seven phyla of PROTOZOA are accepted in this classification--SARCOMASTIGOPHORA, LABYRINTHOMORPHA, APICOMPLEXA, MICROSPORA, ASCETOSPORA, MYXOSPORA, and CILIOPHORA. Diagnoses are given for these and for all higher taxa through suborders, and reporesentative genera of each are named. The present scheme is a considerable revision of the Society's 1964 classification, which was prepared at a time when perhaps 48,000 species had been named. It has been necessitated by the acquisition of a great deal of nex taxonomic information, much of it through electron microscopy. It is hoped that the present classification incorporatesmost of the major changes that will be made for some time, and that it will be used for many years by both protozoologist and non-protozoologists.

Abstract

In Isotricha prostoma, proteins of isolated cortices retaining the ecto-endoplasmic fibrillar boundary (EEB) have been separated by one- and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. In addition to that of tubulin, four main bands corresponding to polypeptide molecular weights of 185, 35, 23, and 22 kd have been observed on 9% SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Supernumerary major bands within a low molecular weight range (11-19 kd) are evident after separation on 7.5-15% polyacrylamide gradient gels. Two-dimensional analysis discloses - 150 polypeptide spots, most of them focusing within an acidic pl range 4.6-5.3. The cortical fibrillar structures are still distinguishable after incubation in solutions containing 1.0 M K. Cl (12 h) or 0.6 M Kl (8 h). A prolonged KI treatment (52 h), however, results in the removal of EEB filaments (˜4 nm in diameter) and of a large part of the kinetid elements, so that the insoluble material is mainly represented by a reticulum of 6-nm filaments interconnecting the proximal regions of kinetosomes. Two proteins with MW of 58 and 63 kd appear to be constituents of this kinetosome-associated filamentous reticulum. Some of the cortical proteins with MW ≤23 kd are the most likely candidates for components of EEB filaments. The absence of decoration with heavy meromyosin confirms that actin is not a major component of Isotricha cortical cytoskeleton.

Publisher Summary This chapter presents the nature, structure, and functions of the cytoskeleton in protists. The term cytoskeleton is commonly used to mean those cell structures which are involved in either or both of two phenomena: (1) maintenance of cell shape—that is, preservation of morphological type, implying a degree of rigidity, or in deformable cells a measure of elasticity; and (2) active cell deformation, or active displacement of various cell organelles (cell locomotion, contractility, cytoplasmic currents, migration of chromosomes, vesicles, organites, or displacement of membrane receptors). The generally accepted structural elements of the cytoskeleton are actin microfilaments, myosin filaments, intermediate or 10-nm filaments, and microtubules. To these can be added elements often found in protists, such as periodic fibers, submembranar epiplasm, and other filaments which differ from the classical ones. Many protists possess a category of cytoskeletal filaments unknown in metazoans—namely, nonactin microfilaments, which may or may not be contractile, and which are equal in size, or smaller than actin microfilaments: these elements are specific to protists, at present.
