Purpose To report clinical and histopathologic features and biologic behavior of orbital myxomas and angiomyxomas. Design Noncomparative retrospective case series. Participants Patients with histopathologic diagnoses of orbital myxoma or angiomyxoma. Methods Clinical metadata and features were obtained from the medical record. Neoplasms were studied by routine histopathology, special stains, and immunohistochemistry. Main Outcome Measures Final diagnosis, based on histopathology, special stains, and immunohistochemistry, and clinical course from analysis of metadata and clinical features. Results Three myxomas and 3 angiomyxomas were identified in 5 males and 1 female. Median age at presentation was 56 years (range, 4–69), with a follow-up ranging from 6 months to 8 years. Two angiomyxomas occurred in children ages 4 and 7 years whose tumors were locally aggressive and recurred. Recurrence also complicated one case of myxoma after incomplete excision. Pathologically, the tumors were poorly circumscribed. Histopathology showed them to be hypocellular, containing stellate and spindled cells in an abundant, loose, myxoid stroma rich in hyaluronic acid. Small blood vessels were rare in myxomas but abundant in angiomyxomas. Tumor cells were frequently immunoreactive for vimentin, CD34, and factor XIIIa. Conclusions Myxomas rarely involve orbital tissue, and no angiomyxomas of the region have been previously reported. Angiomyxomas in children may be aggressive. Vascularity and bone involvement appear to be important prognostic features for recurrence. Complete resection with a margin of healthy tissue appears to be the treatment of choice. Tumor cell immunopositivity for vimentin, CD34, and factor XIIIa may assist in the histopathologic diagnosis.

PURPOSE: To determine if moderate numbers of low fluence, 193-nm excimer laser pulses modify or damage the corneal stroma. METHODS: The corneal epithelium of fresh bovine eyes was scraped off and the exposed stroma was irradiated with 200 low fluence laser pulses from an argon fluoride excimer laser. This process was performed on five eyes each at two laser fluences, 10 mJ/cm p 2 and 30 mJ/cm p 2 . The ten irradiated and three control (unirradiated) corneas were sectioned and studied by electron microscopy. The maximum and minimum thickness of the anterior layer of randomly oriented collagen fibers was measured using electron microscopy. RESULTS: The mean maximum thickness of the anterior randomly oriented layer of collagen was 1.23 ± 0.45 µm in the control corneas, 0.67 ± 0.32 µm in the corneas irradiated at 10 mJ/cm p 2 , and 0.10 ± 0.12 µm in the corneas irradiated at 30 mJ/cm p 2 . The mean thickness of corneal stroma removed was 0.7 µm at a fluence of 10 mJ/cm p 2 and 1.1 µm at a fluence of 30 mJ/cm p 2 . A thin, electron-dense pseudomembrane was present at both fluences. CONCLUSION: We report removal of bovine corneal stroma at 10 mJ/cm p 2 -below the previously reported ablation threshold of 20 mJ/cm p 2 . [J Refract Surg 2001;17:105-109]

To report a case of unilateral optic nerve aplasia with unusual presentation and to review the literature. Clinical and histopathological features of a 36-week-old gestation male infant were described with review of all cases of optic nerve aplasia in the literature. The unusual findings in this case are the systemic congenital anomalies. Twenty-nine out of forty-two cases reported in the literature are true cases of optic nerve aplasia; the others probably represent optic nerve hypoplasia. Out of four cases reported as bilateral, only one case could possibly represent bilateral optic nerve aplasia. Optic nerve aplasia is very rare anomaly. It is overdiagnosed entity in the literature. Bilateral cases are exceedingly rare.
