Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their exosome subsets are vesicle-like nanoparticles (EVs) that are secreted by cells and contain various factors that treat various diseases. However, studies on extracting EVs from marine shellfish are still relatively lacking. In this study, EVs were isolated from Pinctada martensii mucus and the efficacy of EVs in modulating the inflammatory environment was demonstrated. A human skin inflammatory cell model was established to investigate the effect of Pinctada martensii mucus-derived EVs on inflammation. The results showed that EVs could restore the viability of inflammatory HaCaT cells and decrease the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α. The inflammation of HaCaT cells was treated by inhibiting the activation of the MAPK, NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathways, which prevented the phosphorylation of related inflammatory proteins and the entry of P65 protein into the nucleus. This study provides novel EVs from marine shellfish-derived bioactive materials.

In the early stage, oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) caused atherosclerosis, followed by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) damage, leading to a variety of cardiovascular related diseases. This study investigated the mechanism of nonapeptide (EMFGTSSET, ETT) isolated from in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of Isochrysis zhanjiang on endothelial cell inflammation and apoptosis induced by ox-LDL in atherosclerosis. At the cellular level, the results shown that ETT inhibited the up-regulation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) induced by ox-LDL. Furthermore, ETT inhibited the fluorescence intensity of ROS, inflammatory factors (interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and the expression of cell adhesion molecules (vascular cell adhesion protein 1 and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1). In addition, it also upregulates nuclear red blood cell 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO -1), p-Akt, and bcl-2 levels. But down-regulated the expression of p-p65, p-IκB-α, p-p38, p-ERK, p-JNK, bax, and cleaved caspase-9/-3 (c-c-9/-3), thereby inhibited ox-LDL induction inflammation and apoptosis of atherosclerosis. Through molecular docking, it was judged that the stable interaction between ETT and LOX-1 and VCAM-1 was maintained through hydrogen bonding. These results can provide a theoretical basis for ETT as a potential substance for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, and further improve the value of Isochrysis zhanjiangensis.

Skin is the outmost layer of human and sustains most of the external UVB irradiation, which possibly causes the skin photoaging. As a natural antioxidant, marine natural products have been paid more and more attention to their positive effects on photoaging. 6,6'-bieckol is a phlorotanin isolated from Ecklonia cava, while its antiphotoaging bioactivity and mechanism have not been clear yet. This study proves that 6,6'-bieckol enhances cells viability and decreases the level of ROS in UVB-induced human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells. It also resulted in significant downregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), p-c-Fos, phosphorylated JNK, p38, IκB and p65. In addition, molecular docking also showed that 6,6'-bieckol could bind to MMP-1, MMP-3 and MMP-9. Finally, it was proved that 6,6'-bieckol acts on MMPs through the MAPK/AP-1 and NF-κB pathways to reduce UVB-induced oxidative stress damage in HaCaT cells. Therefore, 6,6'-bieckol is a functional food and skin care ingredient with great potential in preventing photoaging.

Laurencia undulata, as one of the most biologically active species in the genus Laurencia, is an edible folk herb red algae. Among them, d-isofloridoside (DIF, 940.68 Da) is isolated from Laurencia undulata, which has antioxidant and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) inhibitory activities. However, its mechanism of action on tumor angiogenesis has not yet been reported. In this study, we have studied the mechanism of DIF on tumor metastasis and angiogenesis in HT1080 cell and human vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC). The results show that DIF can reduce the activity of MMP-2/9, and can inhibit the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) by regulating the downstream PI3K/AKT and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathways, thereby down-regulating the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in CoCl2-induced HT1080 cell. In addition, DIF can inhibit the activation of VEGF receptor (VEGFR-2), regulate downstream PI3K/AKT, MAPK, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signal pathways, activate apoptosis, and thus down-regulate the production of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in VEGF-induced HUVEC. In conclusion, our research shows that DIF has the potential to develop into a tumor-preventing functional food and tumor angiogenesis inhibitor, and it can provide theoretical guidance for the high-value comprehensive utilization of edible red algae Laurencia undulata.

Supramolecular frameworks have been widely synthesized for ion transport applications. However, conventional approaches of constructing ion transport pathways in supramolecular frameworks typically require complex processes and display poor scalability, high cost, and limited sustainability. Here, we report the scalable and cost-effective synthesis of an ion-conducting (e.g., Na + ) cellulose-derived supramolecule (Na-CS) that features a three-dimensional, hierarchical, and crystalline structure composed of massively aligned, one-dimensional, and ångström-scale open channels. Using wood-based Na-CS as a model material, we achieve high ionic conductivities (e.g., 0.23 S/cm in 20 wt% NaOH at 25 °C) even with a highly dense microstructure, in stark contrast to conventional membranes that typically rely on large pores (e.g., submicrometers to a few micrometers) to obtain comparable ionic conductivities. This synthesis approach can be universally applied to a variety of cellulose materials beyond wood, including cotton textiles, fibers, paper, and ink, which suggests excellent potential for a number of applications such as ion-conductive membranes, ionic cables, and ionotronic devices.

An increasing number of experimental and clinical observation suggest that the use of anaesthetics is closely associated with postoperative central nervous system (CNS) complications, such as delirium and cognitive dysfunction. Brain energy rescue is an emerging therapeutic strategy for central nervous system disease (CNSDs). However, the effect of anaesthetics on nerve cell energy utilisation, especially microglia, and its potential effects on cell function still unclear. Elucidating the effects of anaesthetics on lipid droplets, which are specific lipid storage organs, and phagocytosis of microglia is crucial to discover a new therapeutic concept for postoperative CNS complications. Here, we studied the effects of the commonly used anaesthetic midazolam on lipid droplets and phagocytosis in immortalised microglial BV2 cells. Lipid droplets were assessed by flow cytometry and triglyceride quantification. The phagocytosis of BV2 cells was evaluated by detecting their phagocytosis by latex beads. Additionally, the autophagy of BV2 cells was evaluated by western blot and observation under microscopy. Our results showed that midazolam caused lipid droplet accumulation and reduced phagocytosis in BV2 cells, and inhibition of lipid droplet accumulation partially restored phagocytosis. Furthermore, midazolam blocks autophagic degradation by increasing phosphorylated TFEB in BV2 cells, inhibition of midazolam-increased phosphorylated TFEB might contribute to the improvement of autophagic flux by rapamycin. Moreover, promoting autophagy reverse the lipid droplet accumulation and phagocytosis decrease. This study suggests autophagy is a target for attenuating lipid droplet accumulation, normal degradation of lipid droplets is important for maintaining microglia phagocytosis and attenuating the side effects of midazolam on the CNS.

Increasing the charging rate and reducing the charging time for Li-ion batteries are crucial to realize the mainstream of electric vehicles. However, it is formidable to avoid the Li plating on graphite anode upon fast charging. Despite the tremendous progress in Li detection techniques, the fundamental mechanism of Li plating and its chemical/electrochemical responses upon cycling still remains elusive. Herein, we present a comprehensive electrochemical method to investigate the fast charging behavior of graphite electrode. A detailed analysis is directed toward understanding the changes in phase, composition, and morphology of the fast-charged graphite. By applying a resting process, we scrutinize the further reactions of the plated Li, which readily transforms into irreversible (dead) Li. We further develop a modified graphite electrode with a thin Ag coating as the Li reservoir. The plated Li can be "absorbed" by the Ag layer to form the Li-Ag solid solution that suppresses the formation of dead Li and provides structural stability, thus promoting the further lithiation of graphite and enhancing the reversibility. This work not only provides additional insights into the fast charging behavior of graphite electrode but also demonstrates a potential strategy to improve the fast charging performance of graphite anode.

Lithium batteries are the most promising electrochemical energy storage devices while the development of high-performance battery materials is becoming a bottleneck. It is necessary to design and fabricate new materials with novel structure to further improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries. Magnetron sputtering is a physical vapor deposition technique that has the advantages of wide deposition range, fast deposition speed, easy control, large coating area, and strong film adhesion. These merits have led to magnetron sputtering being widely applied in the preparation and modification of materials used in lithium batteries. This review provides a systematic summary on magnetron sputtering in terms of lithium batteries: 1) The development of magnetron sputtering structure and mechanism is summarized, and a detailed comparison of advantages between magnetron sputtering and other vapor deposition equipment, including Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Thermal Evaporation (TE), Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), is provided. 2) Various applications of magnetron sputtering in the evolution of important materials for lithium batteries is discussed, according to the classification of battery components, including electrode materials, solid-state-electrolytes, and other battery components (separators, interlayers, current collectors etc.). In particular, the fabrication of artificial solid–electrolyte interphase films on the surface of anodes with high specific energy is described emphatically because this application may guide the future development direction of magnetron sputtering in lithium batteries. 3) Future prospects are proposed from the development of the device itself and its application in lithium batteries, in order to guide subsequent research and promote the development of magnetron sputtering as well as lithium batteries.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is common in the elderly and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage have been implicated in the development of POD, but the association between these two factors and the potential mechanism is not clear. Cyclophilin A (CypA) is a specifically chemotactic leukocyte factor that can be secreted in response to ROS, which activates matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) and mediates BBB breakdown. We, therefore, hypothesized that ROS may contribute to anesthesia/surgery-induced BBB damage and delirium-like behavior via the CypA/MMP9 pathway. To test these hypotheses, 16-month-old mice were subjected to laparotomy under 3% sevoflurane anesthesia (anesthesia/surgery) for 3 h. ROS scavenger (N-acetyl-cysteine) and CypA inhibitor (Cyclosporin A) were used 0.5 h before anesthesia/surgery. A battery of behavior tests (buried food test, open field test, and Y maze test) was employed to evaluate behavioral changes at 24 h before and after surgery in the mice. Levels of tight junction proteins, CypA, MMP9, postsynaptic density protein (PSD)-95, and synaptophysin in the prefrontal cortex were assessed by western blotting. The amounts of ROS and IgG in the cortex of mice were observed by fluorescent staining. The concentration of S100β in the serum was detected by ELISA. ROS scavenger prevented the reduction in TJ proteins and restored the permeability of BBB as well as reduced the levels of CypA/MMP9, and further alleviated delirium-like behavior induced by anesthesia/surgery. Furthermore, the CypA inhibitor abolished the increased levels of CypA/MMP, which reversed BBB damage and ameliorated delirium-like behavior caused by ROS accumulation. Our findings demonstrated that ROS may participate in regulating BBB permeability in aged mice with POD via the CypA/MMP9 pathway, suggesting that CypA may be a potential molecular target for preventing POD.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are currently widely used and are expected to be used as drug carriers and contrast agents in clinical practice. Previous studies mainly focused on their lung toxicity; therefore, their effects on the vascular endothelium are unclear. In this study, a human angiogenesis array was used to determine the effect of MWCNTs on the expression profile of angiogenic factors in endothelial cells and to clarify the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in MWCNT-induced endothelial cell injury at the cellular and animal levels. The results indicated that MWCNTs (20-30 nm and 30-50 nm) could enter endothelial cells and disrupt human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVECs) activity in a concentration-dependent manner. MWCNTs disrupted the tube formation ability and cell migration function of HUVECs. The results from a Matrigel Plug experiment in mice showed that angiogenesis in the MWCNT experimental group was significantly reduced. The results of a protein chip analysis indicated that VEGF expression in the MWCNT treatment group was decreased, a finding that was validated by ELISA results. The protein expression levels of AKT and eNOS in the MWCNT treatment group were significantly decreased; the administration of recombinant VEGF significantly alleviated the migration ability and tube formation ability of endothelial cells injured by MWCNTs, upregulated the protein expression of AKT and eNOS, and increased the number of neovascularization in mice in the MWCNT treatment group. This study demonstrated that MWCNTs affect angiogenesis via the VEGF-Akt-eNOS axis which can be rescued by VEGF endothelial treatment.

Red algal polysaccharide is a good potential medical resource. Different red algal polysaccharides have different structural characteristics and rich biological activities. Previous studies have identified some structural information of sulfated polysaccharide (GNP, 25.8 kDa) from red algae, Gelidium crinale and found that GNP has excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-tumor activities. On this basis, this study investigated the effect of GNP on atherosclerosis, which is closely related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms and usually coexists and interacts with hypertension. This study investigated the inhibitory activity of GNP on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and its mechanism on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced HUVEC atherosclerosis. The results showed that GNP inhibits the up-regulation of cell adhesion molecules and oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1). Pulmonary fibrosis is a major cause of the poor prognosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). While mechanical ventilation (MV) is an indispensable life-saving intervention for ARDS, it may cause the remodeling process in lung epithelial cells to become disorganized and exacerbate ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis. Piezo1 is a mechanosensitive ion channel that is known to play a role in regulating diverse physiological processes, but whether Piezo1 is necessary for MV-exacerbated ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis remains unknown.This study aimed to explore the role of Piezo1 in MV-exacerbated ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis.Human lung epithelial cells were stimulated with hydrochloric acid (HCl) followed by mechanical stretch for 48 h. A two-hitmodel of MV afteracidaspiration-inducedlunginjuryin mice was used. Mice were sacrificed after 14 days of MV. Pharmacological inhibition and knockout of Piezo1 were used to delineate the role of Piezo1 in MV-exacerbated ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis. In some experiments, ATP or the ATP-hydrolyzing enzyme apyrase was administered.The stimulation of human lung epithelial cells to HCl resulted in phenotypes of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which were enhanced by mechanical stretching. MV exacerbated pulmonary fibrosis in mice exposed to HCl. Pharmacologicalinhibitionorknockout of Piezo1 attenuated the MV-exacerbated EMT process and lung fibrosis in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, the observed effects were mediated by Piezo1-dependent CaOur findings identify a key role for Piezo1 in MV-exacerbated ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis that is mediated by increased ATP release in lung epithelial cells. Inhibiting Piezo1 may constitute a novelstrategyfor the treatment of MV-exacerbated ARDS-associated pulmonary fibrosis.

ObjectiveConvolutional Neural Network(CNN) is increasingly being applied in the diagnosis of gastric cancer. However, the impact of proportion of internal data in the training set on test results has not been sufficiently studied. Here, we constructed an artificial intelligence (AI) system called EGC-YOLOV4 using the YOLO-v4 algorithm to explore the optimal ratio of training set with the power to diagnose early gastric cancer.DesignA total of 22,0918 gastroscopic images from Yixing People’s Hospital were collected. 7 training set models were established to identify 4 test sets. Respective sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, accuracy, and corresponding thresholds were tested, and ROC curves were plotted.Results1. The EGC-YOLOV4 system completes all tests at an average reading speed of about 15 ms/sheet; 2. The AUC values in training set 1 model were 0.8325, 0.8307, 0.8706, and 0.8279, in training set 2 model were 0.8674, 0.8635, 0.9056, and 0.9249, in training set 3 model were 0.8544, 0.8881, 0.9072, and 0.9237, in training set 4 model were 0.8271, 0.9020, 0.9102, and 0.9316, in training set 5 model were 0.8249, 0.8484, 0.8796, and 0.8931, in training set 6 model were 0.8235, 0.8539, 0.9002, and 0.9051, in training set 7 model were 0.7581, 0.8082, 0.8803, and 0.8763.ConclusionEGC-YOLOV4 can quickly and accurately identify the early gastric cancer lesions in gastroscopic images, and has good generalization.The proportion of positive and negative samples in the training set will affect the overall diagnostic performance of AI.In this study, the optimal ratio of positive samples to negative samples in the training set is 1:1~ 1:2.

Background Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumors in children and adolescents. Large numbers of studies have focused on the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that plays essential roles in the progression of osteosarcoma. Nevertheless, the functions and underlying mechanisms of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma remain unknown. Methods Differentially expressed lncRNAs between osteosarcoma and adjacent normal tissues were identified through RNA sequencing. The role of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma proliferation and metastasis were investigated through in vitro and in vivo functional experiments. The interaction between LncRNA NDRG1 and miR-96-5p was verified through bioinformatic analysis and luciferase reporter assay. Regulation relationship between LncRNA NDRG1 and miR-96-5p was further evaluated by the rescue experiments. Additionally, the changes in the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the PI3K/AKT pathway were verified by Western blot. Results LncRNA NDRG1 was up-regulated in osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues and the expression of LncRNA NDRG1 was correlated with the overall survival of osteosarcoma patients. Functional experiments exhibited that LncRNA NDRG1 aggravated osteosarcoma proliferation and migration in vitro; meanwhile, animals experiments showed that LncRNA NDRG1 promoted osteosarcoma growth and metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, LncRNA NDRG1 was found to aggravate osteosarcoma progression and regulate the PI3K/AKT pathway by sponging miR-96-5p. Conclusions LncRNA NDRG1 aggravates osteosarcoma progression and regulates the PI3K/AKT pathway by sponging miR-96-5p. Therefore, LncRNA NDRG1 could act as a prognostic marker and a therapeutic target for osteosarcoma in the future.

Microalgae are important biological sources of marine active peptides and renewable biological resources.

Incorporating microalgae active peptides into functional foods is one of the hottest topics in algae research. Ile-Ile-Ala-Val-Glu-Ala-Gly-Cys (IEC) is a novel octapeptide isolated from the microalgae, Isochrysis Zhanjiangensis that inhibits the vascular injury, angiogenesis and has a protective effect on cardiovascular diseases. In this study, IEC can suppress ROS production and inhibit pro-inflammatory factors through the Nrf2/SOD/HO-1 and NF-κB signaling pathways. Additionally, IEC inhibits angiogenesis by reducing the expression of MMP2 and MMP9 via the PI3K/AKT, NF-κB, and MAPK pathways. Molecular docking also demonstrated that IEC possesses an excellent docking effect with SOD, Bcl-2 and VEGFR-2. In conclusion, this study not only provides a new idea for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but also proves the possibility of octapeptide (IEC) in functional food and drugs, and further improves the use value of microalgae (Isochrysis Zhanjiangensis).

Abstract: Recent research has revealed the role of metalloproteinases in a number of severe pathological illnesses, including cardiac, cartilage, neurological, and cancer-related diseases that are fatal to humans. Metalloproteinases are a subclass of endopeptidases that comprise structurally identical enzymes known as Matrix Metalloproteinases [MMPs] that are solely involved in extracellular matrix degradation and play a significant regulatory function in tissue remodeling. Improper regulation and expression of MMPs have been linked to several life-threatening pathological conditions in humans. Hence there is an ever-growing interest in various research communities to identify and report the Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibitors [MMPIs]. In spite of several chemically synthesized MMPIs being available currently, several unpleasant side effects, un-successful clinical trials have made use of synthetic MMPIs as a risky strategy. Several natural product researchers have strongly recommended and reported many natural resources like plants, microorganisms, and animals as greater resources to screen for bioactives that can function as potential natural MMPIs. Marine environment is one of the vast and promising resources that harbor diverse forms of life known to synthesize biologically active compounds. These bioactive compounds from marine organisms have been reported for their unparalleled biological effects and have profound applications in cosmeceutical, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical research. Several research groups have reported an umpteen number of medicinally unmatched compounds from marine flora and fauna, thus driving researchers to screen marine organisms for natural MMPIs. In this review, our group has reported the potential MMPIs from marine organisms.

In nature, cellulose nanofibers form hierarchical structures across multiple length scales to achieve high-performance properties and different functionalities. Cellulose nanofibers, which are separated from plants or synthesized biologically, are being extensively investigated and processed into different materials owing to their good properties. The alignment of cellulose nanofibers is reported to significantly influence the performance of cellulose nanofiber-based materials. The alignment of cellulose nanofibers can bridge the nanoscale and macroscale, bringing enhanced nanoscale properties to high-performance macroscale materials. However, compared with extensive reviews on the alignment of cellulose nanocrystals, reviews focusing on cellulose nanofibers are seldom reported, possibly because of the challenge of aligning cellulose nanofibers. In this review, the alignment of cellulose nanofibers, including cellulose nanofibrils and bacterial cellulose, is extensively discussed from different aspects of the driving force, evaluation, strategies, properties, and applications. Future perspectives on challenges and opportunities in cellulose nanofiber alignment are also briefly highlighted.

The coexistence of nanoplastics (NPs) and various pollutants in the marine environment has become a problem that cannot be ignored. NPs and marine algae toxins are found in marine organisms and both can enter the human body through the food chain. However, the joint toxic effects of marine algae toxins and NPs on human health remain unknown. In this study, the joint toxic effects and mechanisms of polystyrene (PS) NPs and okadaic acid (OA) were investigated on human gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) cells. AGS cells were exposed to 20 nm PS (0.5, 8 μg mL−1) or/and OA (5, 10 ng mL−1), and their cytotoxicity was assessed by measuring relevant indicators, transcriptomics, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Our data indicated that the joint toxicity of PS and OA to AGS cells was mainly characterized by a decrease in cell viability, depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, and a decrease in IL10 and p53 protein activity, accompanied by an increase in intracellular ROS production and calcium and IL8 levels in comparison with single contaminants. In addition, co-exposure to PS and OA caused cellular damage by activating PI3K/AKT, ERK/c-FOS and caspase-3/caspase-9 signaling pathways. Moreover, the high concentration of PS significantly enhanced the toxicity of OA. WGCNA highlighted enrichment in the Fanconi anemia pathway and MAPK signaling pathway and identified that IER3 was the hub gene in PS and OA co-exposed AGS cells. The results of this study provided insights into the joint toxicity evaluation of NPs and marine algae toxins.

By sacrificing a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as a template, hollow tubular TpBD (H-TpBD) covalent organic framework (COF) tubes were synthesized in situ and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were creatively synthesized in situ in H-TpBD tubes at room temperature. H-TpBD COF tubes and ZIF-8/H-TpBD COF tubes were procured by using a strong base or acid to remove the AAO membrane. Then they were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, etc. Surprisingly, the obtained TpBD COF has a very small aperture (1.8 nm), thinner tube thickness (50 nm), high stability, and a smooth and homogeneous surface. And the pod-like ZIF-8/H-TpBD COF with complete tubular structure was also obtained.

Digital signatures can guarantee the unforgeability and transferability of the message. Different from classical digital signatures, whose security depends on computational complexity, quantum digital signatures (QDS) can provide information-theoretic security. We propose a general method of random pairing QDS (RP-QDS), which can drastically improve QDS efficiency. In a way, our random pairing method provide a tightened result of security level of QDS. In the method, the parity value of each pair is used for the outcome bit value. We present general formulas for fraction of untagged bits and error rates of the outcome bits. Random pairing can be applied as a fundamental method to improve the QDS efficiency for all existing quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. We take sending-or-not-sending (SNS) QDS and side-channel-free (SCF) QDS as examples to demonstrate the advantage of random pairing through numerical simulation. Similar advantage with random pairing is also founded with decoy-state MDIQKD and also decoy-state BB84 protocol. We study the RP-SNS-QDS with finite data size through novel optimization. The numerical simulation results show that the signature rate can be increased by more than 100% under noisy channel using our random pairing method.

Cotton textiles are ubiquitous in daily life and are also one of the primary mediums for transmitting viruses and bacteria. Conventional approaches to fabricating antiviral and antibacterial textiles generally load functional additives onto the surface of the fabric and/or their microfibres. However, such modifications are susceptible to deterioration after long-term use due to leaching of the additives. Here we show a different method to impregnate copper ions into the cellulose matrix to form a copper ion-textile (Cu-IT), in which the copper ions strongly coordinate with the oxygen-containing polar functional groups (for example, hydroxyl) of the cellulose chains. The Cu-IT displays high antiviral and antibacterial performance against tobacco mosaic virus and influenza A virus, and Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis bacteria due to the antimicrobial properties of copper. Furthermore, the strong coordination bonding of copper ions with the hydroxyl functionalities endows the Cu-IT with excellent air/water retainability and superior mechanical stability, which can meet daily use and resist repeated washing. This method to fabricate Cu-IT is cost-effective, ecofriendly and highly scalable, and this textile appears very promising for use in household products, public facilities and medical settings.

Atherosclerosis is a significant cause of many cardiovascular diseases. Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDL) are crucial in developing atherosclerosis. In this study, we researched the effects of two alkaloids epi-aszonalenin A (EAA) and aszonalenin (AZN) of an endophytic fungus Aspergillus terreus C23-3 from coral Pavona, on ox-LDL-induced inflammation, apoptosis and angiogenesis in HUVEC, and evaluated related factors and mechanism. The results reveal that EAA and AZN inhibit HUVEC migration, invasion, angiogenesis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation on a non-cytotoxic basis. Then, EAA and AZN suppressed the ox-LDL-induced of LOX-1, VEGF protein expression, MAPK and PI3K/AKT pathways phosphorylation. Furthermore, AZN suppressed the ox-LDL-induced inflammatory factors (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and VEGF receptor VEGFR-2 and platelet-derived growth factor PDGF. In addition, it inhibited ox-LDL-induced atherosclerosis by blocking inflammation and apoptosis through nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), cleaved-caspase-3 and Bax/Bcl-2 pathways. Molecular docking results confirm that the effect of AZN on atherosclerosis inhibitory activity may be attributed to hydrogen bonds formed into LOX-1 and VEGFR-2. These data indicate that EAA and AZN can effectively prevent ox-LDL-induced HUVEC damage and angiogenesis by inhibiting inflammation and apoptosis. Therefore, EAA and AZN may have potential beneficial effects in regulating atherosclerosis and plaque angiogenesis.

Stable and efficient guided waves are essential for information transmission and processing. Recently, topological valley-contrasting materials in condensed matter systems have been revealed as promising infrastructures for guiding classical waves, for they can provide broadband, non-dispersive and reflection-free electromagnetic/mechanical wave transport with a high degree of freedom. In this work, by designing and manufacturing miniaturized phononic crystals on a semi-infinite substrate, we experimentally realized a valley-locked edge transport for surface acoustic waves (SAWs). Critically, original one-dimensional edge transports could be extended to quasi-two-dimensional ones by doping SAW Dirac “semimetal” layers at the boundaries. We demonstrate that SAWs in the extended topological valley-locked edges are robust against bending and wavelength-scaled defects. Also, this mechanism is configurable and robust depending on the doping, offering various on-chip acoustic manipulation, e.g., SAW routing, focusing, splitting, and converging, all flexible and high-flow. This work may promote future hybrid phononic circuits for acoustic information processing, sensing, and manipulation.

BackgroundSmall plastic particles such sub-micron- (1μm-100nm) and nanoplastics (ResultsIn the present study, the toxicity of 20 nm and 200 nm PS (PS20, PS200) on Caco-2 cells was investigated. PS20 could disrupt cell membrane integrity at a concentration of 80 μg/mL. The images of laser scanning-confocal illustrated that cell tend to uptake more PS20 than PS200 and those particles were localized in lysosomes and mitochondria. Moreover, the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential of PS20 was more severe than that of PS200, which may account for the significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the PS20-treated group. Furthermore, PS20 induced cell apoptosis. Moreover, PS enhanced the cytotoxicity of Methylmercury (MeHg). Overall, this study demonstrates that PS had a size- and concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect on the intestine and an enhanced cytotoxic effect on MeHg.ConclusionsBoth sub-micron and NPs could enter Caco-2 cells. NPS induced apoptosis by inducing mitochondrial damage and was significantly more toxic to cells than sub-micron PS. Both sizes of PS used in the experiments have a synergistic effect on MeHg-induced cytotoxicity. In conclusion, our study demonstrated the strong cytotoxicity of NPs and synergistic toxicity with heavy metals, providing a reference for the environmental toxicity of nanoscale plastics.

Background Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumors in adolescents. Large numbers of studies have focused on the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that plays essential roles in the progression of osteosarcoma. Nevertheless, the functions and underlying mechanisms of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma remain unknown. Methods By ways of RNA sequencing, lncRNAs which expressed differentially between osteosarcoma and adjacent tissues were identified. Through in vitro and in vivo functional experiments, the effect of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma growth and metastasis were investigated. LncRNA NDRG1 specific binding with miR-96-5p was verified through bioinformatic analysis and luciferase reporter assay. Regulation relationship between Lnc NDRG1 and miR-96-5p was further evaluated by the rescue experiments. Additionally, the changes in the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the PI3K/AKT pathway molecular markers were verified by Western blot. Results LncRNA NDRG1 was up-regulated in osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues and the expression of LncRNA NDRG1 was correlated with the overall survival of osteosarcoma patients. LncRNA NDRG1 aggravated the progression of osteosarcoma both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, LncRNA NDRG1 was found to promote progression and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of osteosarcoma by sponging miR-96-5p through the PI3K/AKT pathway. Conclusions LncRNA NDRG1 aggravates the proliferation, metastasis and EMT of osteosarcoma by sponging miR-96-5p through the PI3K/AKT pathway. Therefore, LncRNA NDRG1 could act as a prognostic marker and a therapeutic target for osteosarcoma in the future.
