Academe has always been working on innovating diverse strategic instructions employed in the classroom to effectively transfer knowledge and achieve curriculum objectives. Academic intervention is vital in developing new and existing skills, thus motivating learners’ competence in this contemporary milieu. In the literature, little to no attention is given to improving classroom discussion using differentiated instructions. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of differentiated instruction as a method of teaching weather patterns and seasons of the Philippines to students among grade 6 learners at Moalboal Central Elementary School, Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines. This study utilized a quasi-experimental research design participated by 30 respondents in total for both experimental and controlled groups. A T-test was used as a statistical tool to analyze the degree of difference. In the pretest, the results showed that both groups' mean (11) were equal. The posttest showed a difference of three points from the controlled group's mean (10) to the experimental group's mean (13). Based on the data gathered, the conventional method displayed no significant difference (p-value 0.42), whereas the utilization of differentiated instruction implied that there is a significant difference (p-value 0.00) as a result. Hence, the intervention suggested can make a difference in elevating the students' learning experience. It is recommended to have this strategy employed in different topics to verify its effectiveness in improving classroom discussion.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and serine protease TMPRSS2 have been implicated in cell entry for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the lung epithelium might have implications for the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity of COVID-19. We use human genetic variants that proxy angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor drug effects and cardiovascular risk factors to investigate whether these exposures affect lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 gene expression and circulating ACE2 levels. We observed no consistent evidence of an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with any of our outcomes. There was weak evidence for an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with ACE2 gene expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium (p = 0.014), but this finding did not replicate. There was evidence of a positive association of genetic liability to type 2 diabetes mellitus with lung ACE2 gene expression in the Gene-Tissue Expression (GTEx) study (p = 4 × 10 -4) and with circulating plasma ACE2 levels in the INTERVAL study (p = 0.03), but not with lung ACE2 expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium study (p = 0.68). There were no associations of genetically proxied liability to the other cardiometabolic traits with any outcome. This study does not provide consistent evidence to support an effect of serum ACE levels (as a proxy for ACE inhibitors) or cardiometabolic risk factors on lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression or plasma ACE2 levels.

An experimental study of high level turbulence natural convection in a 4m-height differentially heated cavity was conducted at large Rayleigh numbers (4.0×1010≤ RaH ≤1.2×1011). In this study, turbulence quantities including θRMS (θ′), VRMS (V′), WRMS (W′), turbulent kinetic energy (k) are presented. The power spectral densities show a characteristics frequency of about 0.046 Hz in the core region indicating the existence of internal waves. In the boundary layer, we recorded higher frequency up to 4.5 Hz along the fluid flow. Periodic oscillations in the form of Tollmien-Schlichting waves are found in the boundary layer, near the isothermal walls (from the wall to about 7 mm). The results indicate that the decay of spectrum follows an f -3 law in the boundary layer. Large-scale vortex structures are identified mainly on the edge of the hot boundary layer.

Organisational justice has received a fair amount of attention in business environments. The study investigated employees’ perceptions of organisational justice and their effects on organisational citizenship behaviour at the SAPS Academy, Paarl, South Africa. Using a quantitative research paradigm and an exploratory research method, 226 employees were sampled through a structured questionnaire. Systematic sampling was used to ensure that the sample accurately reflected the larger population (N=457). The correlation analysis revealed that all three dimensions of organisational justice are related significantly and positively to organisational citizenship behaviour. Through regression analysis organisational justice showed a strong predictive relationship with organisational citizenship behaviour. The study demonstrated that employees show a greater propensity to engage in organisational citizenship behaviour when they are able to form positive perceptions of procedural, distributive and interactional justice. The study established that there are major differences between the expectations of employees and managerial actions, which suggest that there are different areas to explore and different types of activities to undertake in order to successfully enhance employees’ perceptions of organisational justice and reinforce organisational citizenship behaviour in the academy.

Ro-vibrational CARS spectroscopy is performed on the Q-branch of N2 in the hybrid fs/ps regime. A new optical setup has been mounted using a single laser source and a spectral filtering stage based on a volume Bragg grating and a Fabry- Perot etalon, in order to achieve a good enough resolution. CARS spectra are recorded in ambient air at a 1 kHz repetition rate. However, a CH4 /air flame is probed at 2 Hz, in order to obtain a strong enough signal to enable thermometry. The theoretical treatment is also detailed and provides the calculated spectrum, properly compared to experimental profiles in order to retrieve the temperature. The accuracy of the hybrid fs/ps-CARS thermometry is satisfactory as regards the state of the art, but further experiments are in progress to increase the repetition rate of the measurement in hot gases., AerospaceLab Journal, Issue 12, December 2016; ISSN: 2107-6596

This paper deals with modeling in electromagnetism in the field of eddy current for Non Destructive Evaluation. Several techniques could be used to diagnose structural damages. In eddy current application, a magnetic field generates by an excitation coil (or primary coil), interacts with a conductive target and generates eddy current. Variations in the phase and the magnitude of these eddy currents can be monitored using a second “receiver” coil. Variations in the physical properties (electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability,..) or the presence of any flaw in the target will cause a change in eddy current and a corresponding change in the phase and amplitude of measured signal. The interpretation of the signals requires a good understanding of the interaction between eddy current and structure. Therefore, researchers need analytical or numerical techniques to obtain a clear understanding of wave propagation behaviors. However, modeling of wave scattering phenomenon by conventional numerical techniques such as finite elements requires very fine mesh and heavy computational power. To go further, an innovative implementation of a semi-analytical modeling method, called the Distributed Points Source Method (DPSM), has been developed and used. The DPSM has already shown great potentialities for the versatile and computationally efficient modeling of complex electrostatic, electromagnetic or ultrasounic problems. In this paper, we report on a new implementation of the DPSM, called differential DPSM, which shows interesting prospects for the modeling of complex eddy current problems. In parallel, an Eddy Current Imager (ECI) has been recently developed in our laboratory in the aim of imaging cracks in metallic structures. In this paper, a simplified modeling of the ECI is presented using DPSM technique, the basics of DPSM formalism being firstly developed. A comparison between experimental and computed data obtained for a millimetric surface defect is presented in the form of complex magnetic cartographies. The obtained results show good agreement. Then, imaging in the case of a buried object in a metallic target is discussed. The effect of 2 parameters (the conductivity and the depth of the buried object) on the magnetic field which is computed at the surface of the material through our DPSM modeling is presented. The objective is to predict the sensor behavior for different values of these parameters, and to plot some arrays of curves, which can be used as calibration curves for the sensor’s user.

In a double-blind, six-way crossover study the effects on psychomotor performance and memory of single doses of Ro 41-3696 (1, 3, 5 and 10 mg), a novel non-benzodiazepine partial agonist at the benzodiazepine receptor, zolpidem (10 mg) and placebo were compared after night-time administration to 12 healthy young male subjects. Psychomotor performance tests (tracking and attention as part of a standardized task battery) were conducted just before and at 1.5 and 8 h after drug intake. The memory test consisted of the recall of a list of 15 words at 8 h after drug intake which had been learned at 1.5 h after intake. At 1.5 h after drug intake 10 mg zolpidem induced markedly larger psychomotor effects than any dose of Ro 41-3696. The effects of 5 and 10 mg Ro 41-3696 and zolpidem were significantly greater than those of placebo (P < 0.05). The following morning, 8 h after drug intake, the slight residual effects of 5 and 10 mg Ro 41-3696 were statistically significantly greater than placebo, whereas zolpidem effects did not differ from placebo. The results of the memory test showed that learning as well as recall were most clearly impaired by zolpidem. An influence of Ro 41-3696 on these variables was not observed for doses up to 5 mg. In conclusion, Ro 41-3696 at all doses tested induced less effects on psychomotor performance and memory than 10 mg zolpidem at 1.5 h after intake. However, the effects of Ro 41-3696 appeared to be of longer duration.

An automatic particle picking algorithm for processing electron micrographs of a large molecular complex, the 26S proteasome, is described. The algorithm makes use of a coherence enhancing diffusion filter to denoise the data, and a random forest classifier for removing false positives. It does not make use of a 3D reference model, but uses a training set of manually picked particles instead. False positive and false negative rates of around 25 to 30 are achieved on a testing set. The algorithm was developed for a specific particle, but contains steps that should be useful for developing automatic picking algorithms for other particles.

Objective: This paper reports on the conceptualisation of "soft skills" as part of a study carried out among two groups of undergraduate medical students before and after curriculum reform at the School of Medicine of the University of Pretoria. Congruent with a call from the World Psychiatric Association, the curriculum reform that was undertaken aimed, inter alia, to place more emphasis on soft skills, including professional interpersonal and social skills, communication skills, and professional and ethical attitudes. Methods: Qualitative methods were used to arrive at a descriptive comparison of the conceptualisation of soft skills by final-year medical students of the traditional curriculum with those of final-year students who had followed the reformed curriculum. A purposive-theoretical sampling method was followed; 42 students from the traditional curriculum and 49 from the reformed curriculum were sampled. Data were collected from seven focus groups, 16 individual interviews, and 23 essays (autobiographical sketches). Results: Both groups of students revealed conceptualisations of soft skills that were similar in kind. The themes they pinpointed were the doctor-patient relationship; relationships with other professionals; being a good listener; explaining things to patients; using good communication skills; establishing rapport with patients from different cultural backgrounds; having a professionally correct attitude; being really interested in patients' well being; having empathy; coping with patients, managing difficult situations, and being ethical and professional. However, the traditional curriculum students offered fewer examples and described fewer experiences that exemplified their soft skills. Students following the reformed curriculum gave rich accounts of their conceptualisation in terms of their own experiences and practical examples of how soft skills had been or could be used, particularly in difficult interpersonal situations. Moreover, they came up with helpful ways of dealing with difficult situations, which surpassed the suggestions offered by the students following the traditional curriculum. Conclusion: The educational and training efforts of the reformed curriculum are associated with an adeptness on the part of the students at applying soft skills to the demands of difficult clinical situations. Young children are not given the opportunity to really live through their loss or to grasp the reality of death. Grief is the intense emotion of sadness and pain experienced at the death of a loved one. After that, there is a normal period of mourning, separation, longing and sadness. Children are, however, not given enough support and guidance to work through this experience. The advancement in medicine and science has also aided in moving death and the resultant grief to the sterile environment of a hospital. The care and removal of the body is done by the undertaker. Denial often deprives children of the opportunity to say good-bye, to exercise mourning activities and to acknowledge the different emotions experienced by them. The basis of grief recovery is researched in the Word of God. Exegesis that shows how Jesus Christ treats children sheds further light on the necessity of being sympathetically involved, as well as on the handling of grief. The consequences of unresolved grief are discussed in psychology and pedagogics. The researcher has shown that emotional, physical, spiritual and social problems which arise from unassimilated grief can be overcome through Biblical counselling and includes some guidelines for counselling.
