This paper presents two ground plane effects due to the size of two rectangular apertures for two-wire transmission line with equal line length crossing the changeable rectangular apertures in infinite ground planes. The CST MWS is used to determine the characteristics of the insertion loss of the transmission line from the load section in accordance with the ground plane aperture size. The results show that the insertion gain and the insertion loss are periodically observed for the multiple frequency of the half wavelength resonance by the wire length when the transmission line is nearby to horizontal side or vertical side of the aperture. The measurements of the insertion loss are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

In modern society as people adapt to social and cultural changes, people prefer high-scarcity designed products rather than standardized ones. Consequently, this adaptation lays a foundation in art and cultural domains to express uniqueness and individuality. The purpose of this study is to develop fashion designs by fusing fashion painting and handicraft techniques through creative and various artistic expressions. The researchers studied the sociocultural background of modern handicraft fashion using document-based research methods. Based on the characteristics of modern handicraft, we produced six garments that applied fashion painting techniques. In this study, the origin of fashion painting was found in ornaments such as tattoo or body-painting. We determined that modern designers were using various fashion painting techniques and motives as unique and advanced ornamentary skills. Harmonizing various handicraft techniques(dyeing, embroidery, quilt, patchwork, beads, fashion painting, etc.) centered on fashion painting enabled creation of unique fashion design through varieties of artistic expressions.

We propose a system-level integrated power management scheme for battery-operated handheld systems such as cell phones and PDAs. Rather than dealing separately with each system component, we consider the interactions between CPU, WNIC (wireless network interface card), LCD, and applications, to reduce energy consumption at the system-level. Depending on the type of applications, the proposed scheme takes the interaction between CPU voltage and frequency and either LCD clock frequency or WNIC power modes, selectively, or both of them. The proposed method selects voltage for CPU in the context of LCD clock speed to reduce the system energy consumption. The application type and the power mode of WNIC are also considered to control the CPU voltage and frequency. Experimental results show that our scheme reduces the system energy consumption by as much as 30% compared to the systems of simply combining DVS (dynamic voltage scaling) and DPM (dynamic power management) or those of using no energy saving policy.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of age, somatotype, and stress on body cathexis and preferences of clothing image. The subjects were 248 women (college students and middle aged women) in Korea. There was a significant difference between a real somatotype and a perceived somatotype. As a whole subjects had a tendency to perceive themselves as overweight. In the college group the degree of being overweight influenced the degree of stress level. College women who perceived themselves heavier than their real weights marked the highest level of stress. Subjects who perceived themselves as underweight had a higher body cathexis. Significant findings were noted in preferences of clothing image relating to body cathexis and age. The clothing with an elegant image was preferred by subjects who had a higher body cathexis and the middle aged women. College women favored the clothing with a pretty image. The clothing with an unique image was preferred by subjects with a high body cathexis, by the college women, and by subjects who perceived themselves as overweight. The clothing with a masculine image was preferred by college women rather than middle aged women. The clothing with a moderate image was preferred by middle aged women. In summary, subjects had a tendency to perceive themselves as overweight, thus the higher stress level which affected body cathexis. Both age and body cathexis significantly affected preferences of clothing image.

Power management is an important part of handheld systems such as PDAs, smartphones, and other battery operated digital devices. A handheld system can transition the nodes of a DRAM to low power state to reduce energy consumption. We propose an efficient method for dynamic power management (DPM) of DRAM based on accessed physical addresses. The proposed method also reduces the number of times resynchronization is done. There is no need to collect scattered pages, as in conventional page clustering mechanisms that focus on virtual memory (VM). Simulation result shows that the proposed method reduces Energy*Delay Product by as much as 75% when compared to DRAMs with no DPM.

This study compared the ability of the Zeus® multifunctional anaesthesia system to control haemodynamic response to surgical stimulation in semi-closed (SCA) or closed circuit anaesthesia (CCA) modes. Fifty patients undergoing gynaecological surgery were randomly assigned to SCA or CCA. Anaesthesia was induced with 2 mg propofol and 0.9 mg/kg rocuronium, intravenously, and maintained using sevoflurane (minimum alveolar concentration [MAC], 1.0) using 2 l/min oxygen plus 2 l/min nitrous oxide (SCA 4 l/min group) or 50% oxygen plus 50% nitrous oxide (CCA group). An increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) < 20% above baseline in response to surgical stimulation provoked a stepwise increase in sevoflurane (1.3 MAC and then 1.6 MAC), followed by fentanyl 1 μg/kg intravenously (rescue drug). The time required for MAP to return to within 10% of baseline was significantly shorter in the CCA group (6.4 ± 3.6 min) compared with the SCA 4 l/min group (10.2 ± 6.0 min). The percentage of patients requiring fentanyl was significantly greater in the SCA 4 l/min group than in the CCA group. In conclusion, CCA controlled acute haemodynamic responses to surgical stimuli more successfully and rapidly than SCA 4 l/min, using a multifunctional anaesthesia machine.

Recently the demand on high graphic ability has increased in handheld systems due to multimedia or game application. Conventional DVS (dynamic voltage scaling) methods focus on reducing energy consumption of CPU. They didn't consider the influence of multimedia accelerators to make DVS policies. From the preliminary experiment, we found that the conventional DVS algorithm is not optimal to a system with a multimedia accelerator in context of reducing energy consumption of the system. We propose a power management mechanism that guarantees both QoS and reduction of energy consumption by considering the relation between the frequencies of the CPU and the frequencies of the multimedia accelerator. The proposed mechanism is a DVS technique in context of multimedia accelerator. We experimented the proposed mechanism on a testbed equipped with Intel XScale processor and Intel 2700 G multimedia accelerator. The experimental result shows that the proposed method reduces energy consumption of the system as much as by 33% compared to conventional CPU-only DVS algorithms.

Recently power management of display modules has become important for handheld systems. In this paper, we observe the interaction between the LCD, main consumer of the power in handheld systems, and the CPU. We propose an efficient method which reduces power consumption of the handheld system by controlling the voltage and frequency of the CPU to reduce display power. The experimental result on Mainstone II with PXA270 shows that the proposed mechanism reduces power consumption of the system by 41% and 15% for multimedia applications and web applications, respectively, when compared to the conventional DVS (Dynamic Voltage Scaling) scheme.

The usage of interactive applications increases in handheld systems. In this paper, we describe a system-level dynamic power management scheme that considers interaction between the CPU and the WNIC, and interactive applications to reduce the energy consumption of handheld systems. Previous research efforts considered the CPU and the WNIC separately to reduce energy consumption. The proposed scheme reduces the energy consumption of handheld systems by using the information gathered from the WNIC to control the CPU voltage and frequency when interactive applications are executed. Experimental results show that on average the proposed scheme reduces energy consumption by 46% when compared to DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) for the CPU and DPM (Dynamic Power Management) for the WNIC.

We propose a system level dynamic power management scheme that considers interaction between CPU and WNIC, and types of workload to reduce energy consumption of handheld systems. The proposed scheme determines the clock speed (voltage) for the CPU and the power mode for WNIC according to the workload type. This mechanism works based on two observations: the consumed power of WNIC is reduced when the clock speed of CPU is increased, and the power modes of WNIC and the clock speed of CPU have different values based on the kind of workload. Experimental results show that on the average the proposed scheme reduces energy consumption by 8% for BE (best effort) workload, 3% for CBR (constant bit rate) workload, and 16% for interactive when compared to DVFS (dynamic voltage and frequency scaling) for CPU and DPM (dynamic power management) for WNIC

The binding force between a liposome and the C2A domain of synaptotagmin I was determined by an atomic force microscopy (AFM). Liposomes were immobilized on the surface of the L1 sensor chip and the C2A domains, which recognize phosphatidylserine, were chemically conjugated onto a gold-coated cantilever tip. The average interaction force between the C2A domain and the liposome was 306 (+/-57) pN while the force between untreated cantilever and the liposome was 58 (+/-16) pN. This work helps understand the physicochemical interactions between proteins and lipid vesicles for the design of high affinity protein probes against the apoptotic cell surface.

This paper presents a structure of TLB (translation lookaside buffer) for low power consumption but high performance. The proposed TLB is constructed as a combination of one block buffer and two-way banked TLBs. The processor can access the block buffer or one of two banked TLBs selectively. This feature is quite different from that used in the traditional block buffering technique. Simulation results show its effectiveness in terms of power consumption and energy*delay product. The proposed TLB can reduce power consumptions by about 40%, 10%, 23%, and 23%, compared with a FA (fully associative)-TLB, a micro-TLB, a victim-TLB, and a banked-TLB respectively. Also the proposed TLB can reduce Energy*Delay products by about 38%, 28%, 21%, and 21%, compared with a FA-TLB, a micro-TLB, a victim-TLB, and a banked-TLB respectively. Therefore the proposed TLB can achieve low power consumption and high performance with a simple architecture.
