Dedicated surveys searching for Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are subject to selection effects which bias the observed population of events. Software injection systems are one method of correcting for these biases by injecting a mock population of synthetic FRBs directly into the realtime search pipeline. The injected population may then be used to map intrinsic burst properties onto an expected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), so long as telescope characteristics such as the beam model and calibration factors are properly accounted for. This paper presents an injection system developed for the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst project (CHIME/FRB). The system was tested to ensure high detection efficiency, and the pulse calibration method was verified. Using an injection population of ~85,000 synthetic FRBs, we found that the correlation between fluence and SNR for injected FRBs was consistent with that of CHIME/FRB detections in the first CHIME/FRB catalog. We also noted that the sensitivity of the telescope varied strongly as a function of the broadened burst width, but not as a function of the dispersion measure. We conclude that some of the machine-learning based Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) mitigation methods used by CHIME/FRB can be re-trained using injection data to increase sensitivity to wide events, and that planned upgrades to the presented injection system will allow for determining a more accurate CHIME/FRB selection function in the near future., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. The CHIME/FRB project has detected hundreds of fast radio bursts (FRBs), providing an unparalleled population to probe statistically the foreground media that they illuminate. One such foreground medium is the ionized halo of the Milky Way (MW). We estimate the total Galactic electron column density from FRB dispersion measures (DMs) as a function of Galactic latitude using four different estimators, including ones that assume spherical symmetry of the ionized MW halo and ones that imply more latitudinal-variation in density. Our observation-based constraints of the total Galactic DM contribution for $|b|\geq 30^\circ$, depending on the Galactic latitude and selected model, span 87.8 - 141 pc cm^-3. This constraint implies upper limits on the MW halo DM contribution that range over 52-111 pc cm^-3. We discuss the viability of various gas density profiles for the MW halo that have been used to estimate the halo's contribution to DMs of extragalactic sources. Several models overestimate the DM contribution, especially when assuming higher halo gas masses (~ 3.5 x 10^12 solar masses). Some halo models predict a higher MW halo DM contribution than can be supported by our observations unless the effect of feedback is increased within them, highlighting the impact of feedback processes in galaxy formation., 19 pages, 4 figures. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, energetic, extragalactic flashes of radio emission whose progenitors are largely unknown. Although studying the FRB population is essential for understanding how these astrophysical phenomena occur, such studies have been difficult to conduct without large numbers of FRBs and characterizable observational biases. Using the recently released catalog of 536 FRBs published by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment/Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) collaboration, we present a study of the FRB population that also calibrates for selection effects. Assuming a Schechter luminosity function, we infer a characteristic energy cut-off of $E_\mathrm{char} =$ $2.38^{+5.35}_{-1.64} \times 10^{41}$ erg and a differential power-law index of $\gamma =$ $-1.3^{+0.7}_{-0.4}$. Simultaneously, we infer a volumetric rate of [$7.3^{+8.8}_{-3.8}$(stat.)$^{+2.0}_{-1.8}$(sys.)]$\times 10^4$ Gpc$^{-3}$ year$^{-1}$ above a pivot energy of 10$^{39}$ erg and below a scattering timescale of 10 ms at 600 MHz, and find we cannot significantly constrain the cosmic evolution of the FRB population with star formation rate. Modeling the host dispersion measure (DM) contribution as a log-normal distribution and assuming a total Galactic contribution of 80 pc cm$^{-3}$, we find a median value of $\mathrm{DM}_\mathrm{host} =$ $84^{+69}_{-49}$ pc cm$^{-3}$, comparable with values typically used in the literature. Proposed models for FRB progenitors should be consistent with the energetics and abundances of the full FRB population predicted by our results. Finally, we infer the redshift distribution of FRBs detected with CHIME, which will be tested with the localizations and redshifts enabled by the upcoming CHIME/FRB Outriggers project., Comment: Revised to reflect published version

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration flashes of radio waves that are visible at distances of billions of light-years. The nature of their progenitors and their emission mechanism remain open astrophysical questions. Here we report the detection of the multi-component FRB 20191221A and the identification of a periodic separation of 216.8(1) ms between its components with a significance of 6.5 sigmas. The long (~3 s) duration and nine or more components forming the pulse profile make this source an outlier in the FRB population. Such short periodicity provides strong evidence for a neutron-star origin of the event. We present a multiband study of FRB 20180916B, a repeating source with a 16.3 day periodicity. We report the detection of 4, 1 and 7 bursts from observations spanning 3 days using upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (300-500 MHz), Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (400-800 MHz) and Green Bank Telescope (600-1000 MHz), respectively. We report the first-ever detection of the source in the 800-1000 MHz range along with one of the widest instantaneous bandwidth detection (200 MHz) at lower frequencies. We identify 30 $\mu$s wide structures in one of the bursts at 800 MHz, making it the lowest frequency detection of such structures for this FRB thus far. There is also a clear indication of high activity of the source at a higher frequency during earlier phases of the activity cycle. We identify a gradual decrease in the rotation measure over two years and no significant variations in the dispersion measure. We derive useful conclusions about progenitor scenarios, energy distribution, emission mechanisms, and variation of downward drift rate of emission with frequency. Our results reinforce that multiband observations are an effective approach to study repeaters and even one-off events to better understand their varying activity and spectral anomalies., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Quantum mechanical metric fluctuations during an early inflationary phase of the universe leave a characteristic imprint in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The amplitude of this signal depends on the energy scale at which inflation occurred. Detailed observations by a dedicated satellite mission (CMBPol) therefore provide information about energy scales as high as $10^{15}$ GeV, twelve orders of magnitude greater than the highest energies accessible to particle accelerators, and probe the earliest moments in the history of the universe. This summary provides an overview of a set of studies exploring the scientific payoff of CMBPol in diverse areas of modern cosmology, such as the physics of inflation, gravitational lensing and cosmic reionization, as well as foreground science and removal .

We summarize existing constraints on the epoch of reionization and discuss the observational probes that are sensitive to the process. We focus on the role large scale polarization can play. Polarization probes the integrated optical depth across the entire epoch of reionization. Future missions such as Planck and CMBPol will greatly enhance our knowledge of the reionization history, allowing us to measure the time evolution of the ionization fraction. As large scale polarization probes high redshift activity, it can best constrain models where the Universe was fully or partially ionized at early times. In fact, large scale polarization could be our only probe of the highest redshifts.

A detailed summary is given of the fluid and electrolyte therapy used in the early phases of treatment of twenty-nine episodes of severe diabetic ketoacidosis. There was little difference in the volume of fluid retained when repair solutions of varying tonicity were employed. Hyperosmolarity of the serum was present in 52 per cent of the patients on entry and in 46 per cent of the patients after twelve hours of therapy. When hypertonic fluids were used there was more hyperosmolarity of the serum after twelve hours of therapy than with hypotonic fluids, and hypernatremia and hyperchloremia were frequently noted. This indicates the need for use chiefly of hypotonic fluids. Factors influencing the correction of acidosis included the lactatechloride ratio of the intravenous fluids used (considered to be best at a ratio over 1.0), the entry serum chloride level, the use of hypertonic solutions, large loads of 0.9 per cent sodium chloride and the rate of fall of the blood ketone levels. Detailed balance studies in eight patients correlated well with previous estimates of 5 to 10 per cent body fluid loss and with balances of certain ions. From these studies we believe that the average range of intake in the early, more acute phases of treatment should be 70 to 120 ml. H 2 O/Kg.; 7 to 10 mEq. Na/Kg.; 5 mEq. Cl/Kg.; 2 to 3 mEq. K/Kg.; 0.2 mEq. Mg/Kg.; 1 mM P/ Kg.; and 4 to 5 mEq. HCŌ 3 /Kg.

Detecting “B‐mode” (i.e., divergence free) polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) would open a new window on the very early Universe. However, the polarized microwave sky is dominated by polarized Galactic dust and synchrotron emissions, which may hinder our ability to test inflationary predictions. In this paper, we report on our knowledge of these “Galactic foregrounds,” as well as on how a CMB satellite mission aiming at detecting a primordial B‐mode signal (“CMBPol”) will contribute to improving it. We review the observational and analysis techniques used to constrain the structure of the Galactic magnetic field, whose presence is responsible for the polarization of Galactic emissions. Although our current understanding of the magnetized interstellar medium is somewhat limited, dramatic improvements in our knowledge of its properties are expected by the time CMBPol flies. Thanks to high resolution and high sensitivity instruments observing the whole sky at frequencies between 30 GHz and 850 GHz, CMBPol will not only improve this picture by observing the synchrotron emission from our galaxy, but also help constrain dust models. Polarized emission form interstellar dust indeed dominates over any other signal in CMBol’s highest frequency channels. Observations at these wavelengths, combined with ground‐based studies of starlight polarization, will therefore enable us to improve our understanding of dust properties and of the mechanism(s) responsible for the alignment of dust grains with the Galactic magnetic field. CMBPol will also shed new light on observations that are presently not well understood. Morphological studies of anomalous dust and synchrotron emissions will indeed constrain their natures and properties, while searching for fluctuations in the emission from heliospheric dust will test our understanding of the circumheliospheric interstellar medium. Finally, acquiring more information on the properties of extra‐Galactic sources will be necessary in order to maximaize the cosmological constrainsts extracted from CMBPol’s observations of CMB lensing.
