Abstract: The spectrum of $��$ and $��$ excitations is reviewed taking into account (nearly) all hyperon resonances which were seen in early analyses or in one of the recent partial-wave analyses. The spectrum is compared with the old Isgur-Karl model and the Bonn model. These models allows us to discuss the SU(3) structure of the observed resonances. The SU(3) decomposition is compared with SU(6) relations between the different decay modes. Seven $��$ states are proposed to be classified as SU(3) singlet states. The hyperon spectrum is compared with the spectrum of $N$ and $��$ resonances., 14 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: The polarization observables $T, E, P, H$, and $G$ in photoproduction of $��$ mesons off protons are measured for photon energies from threshold to $W=2400\,$MeV ($T$), 2280 MeV ($E$), 1620 MeV ($P, H$), or 1820 MeV ($G$), covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, J��Bo, and BnGa partial-wave analyses. A refit within the BnGa approach including further data yields precise branching ratios for the $N��$ decay of nucleon resonances. A $N��$-branching ratio of $0.33\pm 0.04$ for $N(1650)1/2^-$ is found, which reduces the large and controversially discussed $N��$-branching ratio difference of the two lowest mass $J^P=1/2^-$-resonances significantly., 10 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Low-energy data on the three charge states in $��p \to K^+(��)$ from CLAS at JLab, on $K^-p\to ��^0��^0��$ and $��^0��^0��$ from the Crystal Ball at BNL, bubble chamber data on $K^-p\to��^-��^+��^{\pm}��^{\mp}$, low-energy total cross sections on $K^-$ induced reactions, and data on the $K^-p$ atom are fitted with the BnGa partial-wave-analysis program. We find that the data can be fitted well with just one isoscalar spin-1/2 negative-parity pole, the $��(1405)$, and background contributions., 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: A measurement of the double-polarization observable $E$ for the reaction $��p\to ��^0 p$ is reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility in Bonn using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided longitudinally-polarized protons. Circularly-polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung of longitudinally-polarized electrons. The data cover the photon energy range from $E_��=600$~MeV to $E_��=2310$~MeV and nearly the complete angular range. Abstract: We report the first measurements of the $E$ beam-target helicity asymmetry for the $\vec�� \vec{n} \to K^{0}��$, and $K^{0}��^{0}$ channels in the energy range 1.70$\leq W\leq$2.34 GeV. The CLAS system at Jefferson Lab uses a circularly polarized photon beam and a target consisting of longitudinally polarized solid molecular hydrogen deuteride with low background contamination for the measurements. The multivariate analysis method boosted decision trees was used to isolate the reactions of interest. Comparisons with predictions from the KaonMAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina models are presented. Abstract: First measurements of double-polarization observables in $��$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. 10. $N^*\to N ��^\prime$ decays from photoproduction of $��^\prime$-mesons off protons

Abstract: A study of the partial-wave content of the $��p\to ��^\prime p$ reaction in the fourth resonance region is presented, which has been prompted by new measurements of polarization observables for that process. Using the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave formalism, the incorporation of new data indicates that the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$, and $N(2120)3/2^-$ are the most significant contributors to the photoproduction process. New results for the branching ratios of the decays of these more prominent resonances to $N��^\prime$ final states are provided; such branches have not been indicated in the most recent edition of the Review of Particle Properties. Abstract: The helicity-dependent observable $E$ for the reaction $��d\to ��n (p)$ with a spectator proton was recently measured by the A2 Collaboration at MAMI in Mainz. The data were interpreted as further evidence for a narrow resonance with spin and parity $J^P=1/2^+$ ($P_{11}$ wave). However, a full partial wave analysis without any narrow resonance leads to an excellent description of the data, imposing a narrow resonance with the properties suggested by the A2 Collaboration leads to a significant deterioration of the fit quality: there is no need for a narrow resonance., 3 pages, 4 figures

Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in $H\!D$ have been used with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the {\it{E}} polarization observable for an effective neutron target. Abstract: Photon beam asymmetry $��$ measurements for $��$ photoproduction in the reaction $\vec�� p \to ��p$ are reported for photon energies from 1.152 to 1.876 GeV. Data were taken using a linearly-polarized tagged photon beam, a cryogenic hydrogen target, and the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurements obtained markedly increase the size of the database for this observable, extend coverage to higher energies, and resolve discrepancies in previously published data. Comparisons of these new results with predictions from a chiral-quark-based model and from a dynamical coupled-channels model indicate the importance of interferences between $t$-channel meson exchange and $s$- and $u$-channel contributions, underscoring sensitivity to the nucleon resonances included in those descriptions. Comparisons with the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave analysis indicate the $��$ data reported here help to fix the magnitudes of the interference terms between the leading amplitudes in that calculation (Pomeron exchange and the resonant portion of the $J^P=3/2^+$ partial wave), as well as the resonant portions of the smaller partial waves with $J^P$= $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$., 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The two reactions $��p\to K^+��$ and $��^-p\to K^0��$ are analyzed to determine the leading photoproduction multipoles and the pion-induced partial wave amplitudes in slices of the invariant mass. The multipoles and the partial-wave amplitudes are simultaneously fitted in a multichannel Laurent+Pietarinen model (L+P model), which determines the poles in the complex energy plane on the second Riemann sheet close to the physical axes. The results from the L+P fit are compared with the results of an energy-dependent fit based on the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) approach. Abstract: The photoproduction of $��$ mesons off the proton has been studied in the reaction $��p\to p\,��$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target (FROST) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the target asymmetry, $T$, has been measured in photoproduction from the decay $��\to��^+��^-��^0$, using a transversely-polarized target with energies ranging from just above the reaction threshold up to 2.8 GeV. Significant non-zero values are observed for these asymmetries, reaching about 30-40% in the third-resonance region. New measurements for the photon-beam asymmetry, $��$, are also presented, which agree well with previous CLAS results and extend the world database up to 2.1 GeV. These data and additional $��$-photoproduction observables from CLAS were included in a partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework. Abstract: We report the first measurement of differential and total cross sections for the $��d \to K^0��(p)$ reaction, using data from the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Data collected during two separate experimental runs were studied with photon-energy coverage 0.8 - 3.6 GeV and 0.5 - 2.6 GeV, respectively. The two measurements are consistent giving confidence in the method and determination of systematic uncertainties. The cross sections are compared with predictions from the KAON-MAID theoretical model (without kaon exchange), which deviate from the data at higher W and at forward kaon angles. These data, along with previously published cross sections for $K^+ ��$ photoproduction, provide essential constraints on the nucleon resonance spectrum. Abstract: Measurements of the linearly-polarized photon beam asymmetry $��$ for photoproduction from the proton of $��$ and $��^\prime$ mesons are reported. A linearly-polarized tagged photon beam produced by coherent bremsstrahlung was incident on a cryogenic hydrogen target within the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Results are presented for the $��p \to ��p$ reaction for incident photon energies from 1.070 to 1.876 GeV, and from 1.516 to 1.836 GeV for the $��p \to ��^\prime p$ reaction. For $��p \to ��p$, the data reported here considerably extend the range of measurements to higher energies, and are consistent with the few previously published measurements for this observable near threshold. For $��p \to ��^\prime p$, the results obtained are consistent with the few previously published measurements for this observable near threshold, but also greatly expand the incident photon energy coverage for that reaction. Initial analysis of the data reported here with the Bonn-Gatchina model strengthens the evidence for four nucleon resonances -- the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$ and $N(2120)3/2^-$ resonances -- which presently lack the "four-star" status in the current Particle Data Group compilation, providing examples of how these new measurements help refine models of the photoproduction process., 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: New data on pion-photoproduction off the proton have been included in the partial wave analyses Bonn-Gatchina and SAID and in the dynamical coupled-channel approach J��lich-Bonn. All reproduce the recent new data well: the double polarization data for E, G, H, P and T in $��p \to ��^0 p$ from ELSA, the beam asymmetry $��$ for $��p \to ��^0 p$ and $��^+ n$ from Jefferson Laboratory, and the precise new differential cross section and beam asymmetry data $��$ for $��p \to ��^0 p$ from MAMI. The new fit results for the multipoles are compared with predictions not taking into account the new data. The mutual agreement is improved considerably but still far from being perfect.

Abstract: We report a partial-wave analysis of new data on the double-polarization variable $E$ for the reactions $��p\to ��^+ n$ and $��p\to ��^0 p$ and of further data published earlier. The analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) formalism reveals evidence for a poorly known baryon resonance, the one-star $��(2200)7/2^-$. This is the lowest-mass $��^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^-$. Its mass is significantly higher than the mass of its parity partner $��(1950)7/2^+$ which is the lowest-mass $��^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^+$. It has been suggested that chiral symmetry might be restored in the high-mass region of hadron excitations, and that these two resonances should be degenerate in mass. Abstract: The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $��p\to p��$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $��$ meson, $��\to��^0��$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements. These data were included in the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to $��$ photoproduction near threshold was found to be the $3/2^+$ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas $��$-exchange remained small. These $t$-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract: Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $��p\to p��^0$ are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction.

Abstract: The recent precise experimental results for the photoproduction of $��$-mesons off the neutron measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter at the MAMI accelerator have been investigated in detail in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel model. The main result is that the narrow structure observed in the excitation function of $��n \rightarrow n��$ can be reproduced fully with a particular interference pattern in the $J^P=1/2^-$ partial wave. Abstract: The photoproduction of 2$��^0$ mesons off protons was studied with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The energy of photons produced in a radiator was tagged in the energy range from 600\,MeV to 2.5\,GeV. Differential and total cross sections and $p��^0��^0$ Dalitz plots are presented. Part of the data was taken with a diamond radiator producing linearly polarized photons, and beam asymmetries were derived. Properties of nucleon and $��$ resonances contributing to the $p��^0��^0$ final state were determined within the BnGa partial wave analysis. The data presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and $��$ resonances for their decays into $p��^0��^0$ via several intermediate states. Most prominent are decays proceeding via $��(1232)��$, $N(1440)1/2^+��$, $N(1520)3/2^-��$, $N(1680)5/2^+��$, but also $pf_0(500)$, $pf_0(980)$, and $pf_2(1270)$ contribute to the reaction., 28 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables

Abstract: First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction $\vec ��\vec p \to ��^+n$, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. Abstract: The annihilation channels $\bar{\rm p}{\rm p}\to \omega\pi^0, \omega\eta, \omega\eta^\prime$ were studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR at $\bar{\rm p}$ -momenta of 600, 1200, and 1940 MeV/ $c$ . In most cases angular distributions were measured which allowed a complete $J^P$ -analysis using the helicity formalism. The contribution of all relevant initial states could be determined. The maximal contributing angular momenta are dependent on the $\bar{\rm p}$ -momentum and range up to J = 5.

Abstract: Using all recent data on the differential cross sections and spin observables for the reaction $��p \to K^+ ��$, an energy-independent partial-wave analysis is performed. The analysis requires multipoles up to $L = 2$; there is no evidence that the fit requires multipoles with $L=3$. At present the available data allow us to extract the dominant multipoles only. Abstract: The excitation function and momentum distribution of $��^\prime$ mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on $^{12}{}$C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the $��^\prime$-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -($37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)$) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the $��^\prime$-nucleus potential of -($10\pm2.5$) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved $��^\prime$-bound states appears promising., 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Amplitudes for the reaction $��^-p\to ��K^0$ are reconstructed from data on the differential cross section $d��/d��$, the recoil polarization $P$, and on the spin rotation parameter $��$. At low energies, no data on $��$ exist, resulting in ambiguities. An approximation using $S$ and $P$ waves leads only to a fair description of the data on $d��/d��$ and $P$; in this case, there are two sets of amplitudes. Including $D$ waves, the data on $d��/d��$ and $P$ are well reproduced by the fit but now, there are several distinct solutions which describe the data with identical precision. In the range where the spin rotation parameter $��$ was measured, a full and unambiguous reconstruction of the partial wave amplitudes is possible. The energy-independent amplitudes are compared to the energy dependent amplitudes which resulted from a coupled channel fit (BnGa2011-02) to a large data set including both pion and photo-induced reactions. Significant deviations are observed. Consistency between energy dependent and energy independent solutions by choosing the energy independent solution which is closest to the energy dependent solution. In a second step, the {\it known} energy dependent solution for low (or high) partial waves is imposed and only the high (or low) partial waves are fitted leading to smaller uncertainties.

The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several resonances are reported.

Abstract: Ambiguities of the signs of $N\to \Sigma K$ coupling constants are studied in a multichannel partial wave analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions. It is shown that the signs are not free from some ambiguities, and further experimental data are needed. Data on the reactions $\pi^+p\to \Sigma^+K^+$ and $\gamma p\to K^+\Sigma^0$ define rather well the isospin 3/2 contributions to these channels. However the lack of information on polarization observables for the reactions $\pi^-p\to \Sigma^0K^0$, $\pi^-p\to \Sigma^-K^+$ and $\gamma p\to K^0\Sigma^+$ does not allow us to fix uniquely the signs of $N\to \Sigma K$ coupling constants. Abstract: The $\gamma + p \rightarrow K^0 + \Sigma^+$ photoproduction reaction is investigated in the energy region from threshold to $E_\gamma = 2250$\,MeV. The differential cross section exhibits increasing forward-peaking with energy, but only up to the $K^*$ threshold. Beyond, it suddenly returns to a flat distribution with the forward cross section dropping by a factor of four. In the total cross section a pronounced structure is observed between the $K^*\Lambda$ and $K^*\Sigma$ thresholds. It is speculated whether this signals the turnover of the reaction mechanism from t-channel exchange below the $K^*$ production threshold to an s-channel mechanism associated with the formation of a dynamically generated $K^*$-hyperon intermediate state., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Results of a partial wave analysis of new high-statistics data on $��p\to p��$ from MAMI are presented. A fit using known broad resonances and only standard background amplitudes can not describe the relatively narrow peaking structure in the cross section in the mass region of 1660-1750 MeV which follows a minimum. An improved description of the data can be reached by either assuming the existence of a narrow resonance at a mass of about 1700 MeV with small photo-coupling or by a threshold effect. In the latter case the observed structure is explained by a strong (resonant or non-resonant) $��p\to��p$ coupling in the $S_{11}$ partial wave. When the beam asymmetry data, published by part of the GRAAL collaboration, are included in the fit, the solution with a narrow $P_{11}$ state is slightly preferred. In that fit, mass and width of the hypothetical resonance are determined to $M\sim$1694 MeV and $��\sim 40$ MeV, respectively, and the photo-coupling to $\sqrt{{\rm Br}_{��N}} A_{1/2}^p \sim 2.6\cdot 10^{-3}$ GeV$^{-1/2}$. High precision measurements of the target asymmetry and $F$-observable are mandatory to establish the possible existence of such a narrow state and to provide the necessary information to define which partial wave is responsible for the structure observed in the data., 6 pages, 5 figures

The relative production from initial pbar-p states 3P2, 3P1 and 1S0 is well determined from omega-omega decay angular correlations; P-state annihilation dominates strongly. Abstract: We report measurements of branching ratios for production of a series of two meson final states in $$\bar p$$ p annihilations at rest in liquid hydrogen. We also obtain, in a more precise fashion, the following ratios of branching ratios:K + K −/π+π−=0.323±0.013, π0η′/π0η=0.548±0.056, ηη′/ηη=0.31±0.15, ωη′/ωη=0.515±0.040, π0η/π0π0=0.303±0.010, ηη/π0π0=0.232±0.011 and π0ω/ηω=0.377±0.12. The measurements are made for different η and η′ decays, and we thus obtain Γη→3π 0/Γη→γγ=0.841±0.034, and $$\Gamma _{\eta ' \to \gamma \gamma } /\Gamma _{\eta ' \to \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \eta } = 0.091 \pm 0.009$$ .

Abstract: Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~$��$ has been extracted for $115^\circ < ��_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ$ of the $��^0$~meson and for $��_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ$. The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by covering the very forward region, extend previously published data for the same reaction by our collaboration. Abstract: Quasi-free photoproduction of $��'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $��'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $��n \rightarrow n��'$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $��'$-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. Abstract: The reaction $��p \TO K^+��(1520)$ was measured in the energy range from threshold to 2.65 GeV with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher facility ELSA in Bonn. The $��(1520)$ production cross section was analyzed in the decay modes $pK^-$, $n \bar{K}^0$, $��^{\pm}��^{\mp}$, and $��^+��^-$ as a function of the photon energy and the squared four-momentum transfer $t$. While the cross sections for the inclusive reactions rise steadily with energy, the cross section of the process $��p \TO K^+��(1520)$ peaks at a photon energy of about 2.0 GeV, falls off exponentially with $t$, and shows a slope flattening with increasing photon energy. The angular distributions in the $t$-channel helicity system indicate neither a $K$ nor a $K^\star$ exchange dominance. Abstract: Data on the photoproduction of $��$ mesons on nuclei have been re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the $��$ mass in the nuclear medium by 14$%$ at normal nuclear matter density. The extracted $��$ line shape was found to be sensitive to the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination are described. The $��$ signal on the $Nb$ target, extracted in the re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a $LH_2$ target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass shift is thus not confirmed. Abstract: A Dalitz plot analysis of the OZI rule violating decay $D^+_s$ into $��^- ��^+ ��^+$ is presented using different partial wave approaches. Scalar and vector waves are described by $K$-matrices; their production is parameterized in a $P$-vector approach. Alternatively, Breit-Wigner amplitudes and Flatt�� parametrization are used. Special emphasis is devoted to scalar mesons. The $f_0(980)$ resonance provides the most significant contribution. Adding $f_0(1500)$ to the scalar wave leads to an acceptable fit while introduction of $f_0(1370)$ and/or $f_0(1710)$ does not lead to significant improvements. A scan of the scalar wave optimizes for $M=1452\pm 22$ MeV/c$^2$. When $f_0(1710)$ is added, the mass uncertainty increases, and the fit yields $M=1470\pm 60$ MeV/c$^2$ which is fully compatible with the nominal $f_0(1500)$ mass. The scalar wave seems to exhibit a phase motion of 270$^{\circ}$ units in the mass range from 1200 to 1650 MeV/c$^2$., 10 pages, 10 tables, 9 figures

Abstract: The photo production of $��$ mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb and Pb has been measured using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The dependence of the $��$ meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic $��$ width is found to be $130-150 \rm{MeV/c^2}$ at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the $��$ meson, this inelastic $��$ width corresponds to a reduction of the $��$ lifetime by a factor $\approx 30$. For the first time, the momentum dependent $��$N cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb., 5 pages, 4 figures
