Abstract

Penning trap mass measurements on neutron-deficient Cd isotopes (99-109)Cd have been performed with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN, all with relative mass uncertainties below 3*10^8. A new mass evaluation has been performed. The mass of 99Cd has been determined for the first time which extends the region of accurately known mass values towards the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn. The implication of the results on the reaction path of the rp process in stellar X-ray bursts is discussed. In particular, the uncertainty of the abundance and the overproduction created by the rp-process for the mass A = 99 is demonstrated by reducing the uncertainty of the proton-separation energy of 100In Sp(100In) by a factor of 2.5., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

High-precision mass and charge radius measurements on ;{17-22}Ne, including the proton-halo candidate 17Ne, have been performed with Penning trap mass spectrometry and collinear laser spectroscopy. The 17Ne mass uncertainty is improved by factor 50, and the charge radii of ;{17-19}Ne are determined for the first time. The fermionic molecular dynamics model explains the pronounced changes in the ground-state structure. It attributes the large charge radius of 17Ne to an extended proton configuration with an s;{2} component of about 40%. In 18Ne the smaller radius is due to a significantly smaller s;{2} component. The radii increase again for ;{19-22}Ne due to cluster admixtures.

Abstract

The masses of very neutron-deficient nuclides close to the astrophysical rp- and nu p-process paths have been determined with the Penning trap facilities JYFLTRAP at JYFL/Jyv\"askyl\"a and SHIPTRAP at GSI/Darmstadt. Isotopes from yttrium (Z = 39) to palladium (Z = 46) have been produced in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. In total 21 nuclides were studied and almost half of the mass values were experimentally determined for the first time: 88Tc, 90-92Ru, 92-94Rh, and 94,95Pd. For the 95Pdm, (21/2^+) high-spin state, a first direct mass determination was performed. Relative mass uncertainties of typically $\delta m / m = 5 \times 10^{-8}$ were obtained. The impact of the new mass values has been studied in nu p-process nucleosynthesis calculations. The resulting reaction flow and the final abundances are compared to those obtained with the data of the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

An overview and status report of the new trapping facility for highly charged ions at the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung is presented. The construction of this facility started in 2005 and is expected to be completed in 2008. Once operational, highly charged ions will be loaded from the experimental storage ring ESR into the HITRAP facility, where they are decelerated and cooled. The kinetic energy of the initially fast ions is reduced by more than fourteen orders of magnitude and their thermal energy is cooled to cryogenic temperatures. 7. Ionization energy of Li 6,7 determined by triple-resonance laser spectroscopy

Abstract

Rydberg level energies for Li7 were measured using triple-resonance laser excitation, followed by drifted field ionization. In addition to the principal n P2 series, weak Stark mixing from residual electric fields allowed observation of n S2 and hydrogenic Stark manifold series at higher n. Limit analyses for the series yield the spectroscopic ionization energy EI (Li7) =43 487.159 40 (18) cm-1. The Li 6,7 isotope shift (IS) was measured in selected n P2 Rydberg levels and extrapolation to the series limit yields IS (EI) 7,6 =18 067.54 (21) MHz. Results are compared with recent theoretical calculations: EI values from experiment and theory agree to within 0.0011 cm-1, with the remaining discrepancy comparable to uncertainty in QED corrections of order α4 Ry. The difference between experiment and calculated mass-based IS (EI) yields a change in nuclear charge radii between the two isotopes δ r2 7,6 =-0.60 (10) fm2. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

At the GSI accelerator complex, using the universal linear accelerator UNILAC and the syn- chrotron SIS, highly-charged ions up to U 92 + are produced by passing a 400 MeV/u beam through a gold foil stripping off all or nearly all electrons. The HITRAP facility is built to decelerate those ions to almost rest and to provide them to experiments. In a number of commissioning beam times, the deceleration in the ESR, the extraction, bunching and deceleration to 0.5 MeV/u has been shown. The remaining steps, deceleration to 6 keV/u and cooling in a cryogenic Penning trap are ongoing. Precision experiments for atomic and nuclear physics purpose are being prepared and range from laser spectroscopy on stored ions, collision experiments with complete kinematic analysis to high precision mass measurements on single highly charged ions
