The scientifc exchange correspondence of the Dundo Museum Biology Laboratory (Angola), included in the archive of António de Barros Machado (1912–2002) and Dora Lustig (1907–1986), constitutes a valuable repository of information for the history of contemporary science, particularly in the feld of natural sciences— botany, entomology, mammals, ornithology, primates, reptiles, termites, zoogeography, zoology—and of biology. This paper describes the application of the Records in Contexts model to the correspondence collection, with the aim of representing two realities: its production context and the relationships between scientists. The exploration of the model sought to understand its fundamentals and, simultaneously, model the information, starting by identifying the entities, attributes and relations needed for the collection representation scheme. This study resulted in a modelling exercise of the relations between 11 correspondents and the director of the Dundo Museum Biology Laboratory, Barros Machado, regarding the work on the museum collections which culminated in the publication of scientifc articles in Publicações Culturais da Companhia de Diamantes de Angola [Cultural Publications of the Diamond Company of Angola]. In the future, it is proposed to apply the same scheme to the description of the remaining scientists in the epistolary collection.

Introduction to "Metadata as Knowledge," a special issue of KULA: Knowledge Creation, Dissemination, and Preservation Studies that takes up the critical relationship between metadata and knowledge. The issue includes articles and project reports that address metadata, hidden knowledge, and labour; standards versus expression; knowledge sharing and reuse of metadata; forays into open and shared knowledge; linked data, metadata translation, and discovery; and machine learning and knowledge graphs. Although rarely an object of notice or scrutiny by its users, metadata governsthe circulation of information and has the power to name, broadcast, normalize, oppress, and exclude. As the contributions to this issue demonstrate, metadata is knowledge, and metadata creators, systems, and practices must contend with how metadata means.

Automated learning from datasets with a long-tailed distribution has gradually become a research hotspot due to the increasing complexity of large-scale real-world datasets. Existing solutions to long-tailed data classification usually involve re-balancing strategies for global optimization, which can achieve satisfactory results. However, re-balancing strategies tend to alter the original data. In this paper, we propose a knowledge granulation method based on global and local granulation to assist the hierarchical classification of long-tailed data without altering the original data. Firstly, a global classifier is constructed based on the WordNet knowledge organization’s hierarchical structure, which is used to granulate the global data from coarse to fine. Secondly, a local hierarchical classifier adapted to tail data is constructed for tail classes that contain few samples. The hierarchical structure of this local classifier is obtained by granulating the data via spectral clustering rather than by using the semantic hierarchy of classes. Finally, the global classifier is used to preliminarily classify samples, then uncertain samples are further classified by the tail local classifier. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several state-of-the-art models designed for the hierarchical classification of long-tailed data.

The article explores the theoretical interactions established between the French lines of Discourse Analysis and the informational field. The focus of this analytical study is on interdisciplinary issues, as well as on epistemological relationships, which this dialogue presents for Information Science and the Knowledge Organization. The objective is to investigate the establishment of the interdisciplinary relations of these fields in the Brazilian context, using the critical epistemology as the methodological path for understanding this diachronic perspective. Three lines of discourse analysis were chosen for the purposes of the epistemological relationship: Michel Pêcheux's approach, sociolinguistic approach and Michel Foucault's approach. The theses and dissertations analyzed reveal that the epistemological interactions between French theories of discourse and the informational field are found in studies on the epistemology and historicity of Information Science, bibliometric studies, archival studies, studies on the reading of information professionals , studies on Information and Knowledge Organization, methodological studies and studies on Information and Knowledge Representation. O artigo explora as interações teóricas estabelecidas entre as linhas francesas de Análise do Discurso e o campo informacional. O foco deste estudo analítico está nas questões interdisciplinares, bem como nas relações epistemológicas, que esse diálogo apresenta para Ciência da Informação e a Organização do Conhecimento. O objetivo é investigar o estabelecimento das relações interdisciplinares desses campos no contexto brasileiro, tendo como caminho metodológico para o entendimento desta perspectiva diacrônica a epistemologia crítica. Três linhas de análise do discurso foram eleitas para efeitos da relação epistemológica: a linha de Michel Pêcheux, a linha da Sociolinguística e a linha de Michel Foucault. As teses e as dissertações analisadas revelam que as interações epistemológicas entre as teorias francesas do discurso e o campo informacional se encontram em estudos sobre a epistemologia e a historicidade da Ciência da Informação, estudos bibliométricos, estudos arquivísticos, estudos sobre a leitura dos profissionais da informação, estudos sobre Organização da Informação e do Conhecimento, estudos metodológicos e estudos sobre Representação da Informação e do Conhecimento.&nbsp

John Searle Library has undertaken a reclassification of the Chinese Theological Collection belonging to Melbourne School of Theology. It was found that Pettee Classification did not support cataloging sufficiently due to not being updated in decades. Reclassification of the collection was necessary. This paper discusses the decision-making process and how the new classification scheme for the collection was chosen. It describes the implementation of the reclassification project and reviews the outcomes. It was decided to reclassify the collection to Library of Congress Classification. This resulted in improving information retrieval, increasing collection discoverability and visibility, and reducing staff time devoted to cataloguing and reference service. An interactive online LCC training module was developed to educate users. As a result, users were engaged and empowered to discover the collection effectively. In conclusion, classification is not merely for shelving and retrieving items. It is the foundation of knowledge organization and also a core business to support many aspects of library service. Information professionals should rethink and reposition classification and transform it into a value-added service for the library.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to semantically annotate the content of digital images with the use of Semantic Web technologies and thus facilitate retrieval, integration and knowledge discovery. Design/Methodology/Approach After a review and comparison of the existing semantic annotation models for images and a deep analysis of the characteristics of the content of images, a multi-dimensional and hierarchical general semantic annotation framework for digital images was proposed. On this basis, taking histories images, advertising images and biomedical images as examples, by integrating the characteristics of images in these specific domains with related domain knowledge, the general semantic annotation framework for digital images was customized to form a domain annotation ontology for the images in a specific domain. The application of semantic annotation of digital images, such as semantic retrieval, visual analysis and semantic reuse, were also explored. Findings The results showed that the semantic annotation framework for digital images constructed in this paper provided a solution for the semantic organization of the content of images. On this basis, deep knowledge services such as semantic retrieval, visual analysis can be provided. Originality/Value The semantic annotation framework for digital images can reveal the fine-grained semantics in a multi-dimensional and hierarchical way, which can thus meet the demand for enrichment and retrieval of digital images.

Ontologias são artefatos de representação do conhecimento utilizados no âmbito da Ciência da Informação, principalmente no campo da Organização do Conhecimento, bem como em áreas relacionadas. Mesmo que o tema já venha sendo disseminado há mais de duas décadas, a construção de ontologias ainda traz desafios para profissionais, pesquisadores e estudantes da Ciência da Informação. Tais desafios estão relacionados, principalmente, ao jargão lógicofilosófico necessário, a etapa formalização de conhecimento e a complexidade dos editores disponíveis, voltados para a computação. A presente pesquisa objetiva trazer uma alternativa a tais desafios. Apresenta-se aqui o Onto4AllEditor, um editor de ontologias gráfico, colaborativo e baseado na Web, que inclui recursos simples e intuitivos. Baseado na metodologia OntoForInfoScience, o editor foi planejado para facilitar o trabalho de usuários com níveis de experiência variados, objetivando popularizar a construção de ontologias. O artigo debate as limitações dos editores populares disponíveis e os compara ao que é oferecido pelo Onto4AllEditor. Conclui-se que o Onto4AllEditor, mesmo que já inclua recursos avançados, facilita a construção de ontologias, em particular, para aqueles usuários que estão iniciando nesse tipo de atividade.

Apresenta pesquisa teórica e prática do processo de elaboração de resumos, produtos documentários que permitem o desenvolvimento da produção e disseminação científica. Procura sumarizar parâmetros existentes, verificar a contribuição e aplicação destes na estruturação do resumo em artigos científicos, e refletir sobre a qualidade dos resumos apresentados. Tal investigação justifica-se pelo fato de o resumo ser elemento pré-textual estudado pelo campo da Organização e Representação do Conhecimento que possibilita a eficiência da recuperação da informação. Para tanto, foram selecionados e analisados resumos de uma amostra de trinta e cinco artigos científicos. Após a análise da amostra, observou-se que os parâmetros normativos mínimos identificados foram pouco aplicados na redação dos resumos, sendo omitidas uma ou mais das quatro partes consideradas essenciais num resumo: objetivo, metodologia, resultados e conclusões. Conclui que os parâmetros existentes são generalistas e pouco exigidos, dificultando a produção de resumos que atendam bem sua finalidade.

The article is devoted to the memories of the talented work of Eduard Rubenovich Sukiasyan (1937—2021) — the greatest library scientist in Russia, one of the developers and later Editor-in-Chief of the Library Bibliographic Classification (LBC). The author traces his professional path as prominent theorist and practitioner of librarianship. The article presents information about the work of E.R. Sukiasyan in the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR (now the Russian State Library, RSL), as well as the compiler and member of the Editorial Board of the “Dictionary of Library Terms”. The author considers his contribution to the reorganization of the RSL system of catalogues as the Head of the Department of systematic and subject catalogues. Eduard Rubenovich enjoyed the well-deserved love of students of the Academy of Retraining of Workers of Art, Culture and Tourism. E.R. Sukiasyan was an active participant in the public library movement, the member of the Council of the Russian Library Association. He made great contribution to the activities of the International Society for Knowledge Organization, as well as to the work of the Classification and Indexing Section of the International Federation of Library Organisations and Institutions. E.R. Sukiasyan is the author of over one thousand scientific papers.

Metadata is key to effective knowledge organization, and designing user interfaces that maximize user performance and user experience during metadata creation would benefit several areas of GIScience. Yet, empirically-derived guidelines for user interfaces supporting GI-metadata creation are still scarce. As a step towards mitigating that gap, this work has implemented and evaluated a prototype that produces semantically-rich metadata for web maps via one of two input modalities: typing or speech. A controlled experiment (N=12) to investigate the merits of both modalities has revealed that (i) typing and speech were comparable as far as input duration time is concerned; and (ii) they received opposed ratings concerning their pragmatic and hedonic qualities. Combining both might thus be beneficial for GI-metadata creation user interfaces. The findings are useful to ongoing work on semantic enablement for spatial data infrastructure and note-taking during visual analytics.

Background Remedial education is crucial to help struggling students meet the complex requirements of a health sciences curriculum. For this reason, a remediation process was developed by the Centre Osteopathique du Quebec (COQ) for students enrolled in its osteopathic training program. This remedial process focuses on four axes that represent the foundations of effective clinical practice. Aims A study was conducted to describe the motives, interventions and outcomes of COQ's remediation process. Four aspects were assessed: 1) information about students who have benefited from the remediation process; 2) main reasons leading to remedial education and types of intervention used; 3) students' academic outcomes after experiencing the remediation process; and 4) students' perceived effects and satisfaction levels of the remedial program. Method Data was gathered by self-administered survey and students’ educational files were reviewed. Results Remedial education was mainly initiated in response to students' request or following students' poor outcomes to theoretical, and/or practical, and/or clinical reasoning exams. Different types of intervention were used such as solving clinical cases, knowledge organization activities, supervised clinics, palpation workshops, and broadening learning strategies. This program yielded positive outcomes both in terms of students’ academics results and learning processes. Conclusion Despite globally positive results, best-practice pedagogy needs to be further defined.

PurposeThis study demonstrates the synthesis of a knowledge organization framework from tourist reviews and an ontological model with its implementation in graph database, which is based on this framework. The aim is to influence place-making outcomes at tourist destinations.Design/methodology/approachThe faceted classification approach has been used for generating and validating the framework based on online reviews about urban tourism parks. The framework was used to develop an ontology using Protégé ontology editor that was implemented using GraphDB.FindingsThree fundamental facet categories, namely Component, Aspect and Outcome, each consisting of several sub-facets, were synthesized from the analyses of the reviews. Besides helping in constructing the ontology, the analysis also helped in calculating an importance-score for the reviews that helped in ranked information retrieval.Research limitations/implicationsThe analyses of the reviews were done manually and may carry human bias. But it is robust as it is based on a canonical faceted methodology.Practical implicationsIt is envisaged that this study will help tourist destination planners in decision-making by easing the utilization of tourist generated reviews by the knowledge management systems they use. Opinions of tourists will be induced in destination planning thereby helping in the production of quality “places.”Originality/valueThe presented faceted framework aims to specifically aid knowledge organization pertaining to online reviews related to tourist destinations. The focus is on organizing knowledge to facilitate tourism development for better place-making outcomes, which is an important area of research though it has little contributions.

PurposeThe paper aims to present the development of conceptualization of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) based on associations with other articles on English edition of Wikipedia. The main goal of the paper is to study the social organization of knowledge about COVID-19 within the Wikipedia community of practice.Design/methodology/approachThe methodological approach taken in this study was based on the application of Moscovici's theory of social representations to Wikipedia's knowledge organization system (KOS). Internal links in the Wikipedia article about COVID-19 were considered anchors in its social representations. Each link in the introductory part of the article was considered an indicator of the semantic relationship between COVID-19 and other concepts from Wikipedia's knowledge base. The subject of this study was links extracted from all revisions of the COVID-19 article between February and September 2020. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed on these conceptual structures using both synchronic and diachronic approaches.FindingsIt was found that the evolution of anchors in the Wikipedia article on COVID-19 was in line with the mechanism of symbolic coping related to infectious disease. It went through stages of divergence, convergence and normalization. It shows that this mechanism governs the social organization of knowledge related to COVID-19 on Wikipedia.Originality/valueNo studies have been devoted to the image of COVID-19 as presented by the evolution of links in Wikipedia and its implications for knowledge organization (KO).

Effective deployment of a technology in an environment is the desire of many system developers. Positive uptake of a technology coupled with user acceptance is deemed as a key indicator towards technology acceptance. Knowledge is weighed as a strategic resource for any successful data driven decision making initiative. Institutions leverage on technological initiatives and tools to drive knowledge management (KM) initiatives that enhance quality service delivery and prudent data management. These initiatives provide the overall strategy for managing data resources. They make available knowledge organization tools and techniques while enabling regular updates. Derived benefits of positive deployment of a technological intervention are competency enhancement through gained knowledge, raised quality of service and promotion of healthy development of e-commerce. Successful and timely adoption of technological interventions through which knowledge management initiatives are deployed remains a key challenge to many organizations. This paper proposes the application of a wholesome multilevel technology acceptance management model towards effective technology deployment. The proposed model takes into account human, technological and organizational variables, which exist in a deployment environment. This model will be vital in driving early technology acceptance prediction and timely deployment of mitigation measures to deploy technological interventions successfully.

The purpose of the article is to provide general background information about two national classification systems (CS), about which there have been practically no publications in Russian professional literature. The author gives the definition of national CS, adopted by the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) and talks about the typology categories of CS. The first part considers the Library Classification of the People's Republic of China (CLC). The history of its creation, the available variants and publications are sequentially analized. The distribution boundaries of CLC are shown, its structure and features are considered. CLC is a completely original system created by Chinese experts. The second part of the article analyzes the Decimal Classification of the Republic of Korea (KDC). Widespread in the world of DDC schedules were taken as the basis of the KDC many years ago. Some of the main classes were used unchanged, while others were completely rearranged so that Korea and Korean language were in the first places in the schedules. Similar changes were made to the religion class. KDC has only one option (the last 6th edition is in 3 volumes). It is considered national, but not used in all scientific libraries in South Korea. Knowledge of the classification practices of foreign countries is an indisputable indicator of our classification culture.

Government archives comprise a series of documents or important information resources produced or used by government departments to meet the needs of economic and social governance, fulfill government functions, and perform official activities. They have inestimable value in economic development, social operations, and strategy. However, due to the lack of effective application of knowledge management technology, government information resources are locked in archive records, making it difficult to achieve knowledge organization and interoperability. Based on the theories and methods of the semantic web and semantic ontology construction, we summarize the relevant domain knowledge of government archives and construct the Chinese Government Archive Ontology (GAO) with the collection of government archives as the data. The ontology model implements the semantic interoperability between government archives and performs knowledge representation and reasoning on their content. We define the classes and properties of GAO, describe its creation process in detail, and demonstrate its applicability in practice through SPARQL query and event logical representation based on the 5W1H framework. GAO is capable of realizing linked data and discovering the knowledge hidden behind the policies of various agencies and departments, which can serve scientific decision-making and the economic society, regulate institutional powers, and further promote the research and practice of archival science in the digital age.

The emerging field of privacy-preserving biometrics is attracting significant attention, as a paradigm that can address several of the key concerns in cryptographic authentication processes, whilst simultaneously addressing the issues of privacy. This paper contributes to the understanding of the field from following perspectives: (1) It proposes a novel and comprehensive taxonomy of privacy-preserving biometrics for the classification of the knowledge/existing literature in the field. (2) It provides a taxonomy-guided literature survey. (3) Open research problems/future works are discussed. (4) As the techniques used in privacy-preserving biometric authentication systems rely upon, or integrate with, general biometric matching techniques, a taxonomy and summary of the state-of-art biometrics matching techniques has also been developed. Such system-level knowledge organization will help produce excellent self-contained contents of reference materials for researchers in both the biometrics community and cryptography community who would otherwise have difficulty in understanding the relevant materials from the other community.

Multi-domain knowledge organization is an effective way of correlating cross-domain knowledge or intercommunicating between cross-domain knowledge systems. As a knowledge organization model, ontology is widely used in information and management systems. To organize multi-domain knowledge, ontologies in different domains correlate to each other directly or indirectly. Generally, matching and integrating ontologies of different domain into a large scale ontology is the common way of directly correlating, while building a top level ontology is the main method for indirectly correlating. As the scale of domain ontologies get larger and larger, both direct and indirect methods become more difficult and time-consuming. In order to improve the organization of multi-domain knowledge, this paper presents a novel ontology organization method to build real-time ontology by adaptive filter while user presenting requirements. Only the entities related to user requirements are integrated, while building a real-time ontology. Firstly, the method searches domain ontologies that are related to user requirements. Then sub-ontologies are extracted from search results by filter, and they are integrated into a new ontology under direction of filter, i.e. real-time ontology. Finally, four criteria are introduced to evaluate real-time ontology. The experiment results illuminate that real-time ontology perform excellently in accuracy, recall, correctness and especially time-consuming.

ABSRACT: The research described “knowledge management mechanisms” as one of the methods of developing higher education in Egypt, especially social work institutions and towards achieving organizational development within them. These mechanisms used for identifying, acquiring, generating, storing, and organizing knowledge, as well as for knowledge application and development. Knowledge management is considered one of the most important means and methods that can contribute to improve the environment of the educational system, with its material and human components. And based on the fact that the method of community organization as one of the professional methods in the social work profession seeks to combine all efforts which it is possible to achieve organizational development within the institutions of society as a whole, including the importance of organizational development within educational institutions as one of the mechanisms and methods of practicing this method in development organizational and overall quality of the institution. The study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- What are the mechanisms of knowledge management and achieving organizational development in higher education institutions ? 2- What is the reality of knowledge management mechanisms, namely (knowledge diagnosis - knowledge acquisition - knowledge generation - knowledge storage - knowledge distribution - knowledge application - knowledge organization ) ? 3- What are the most obstacles that face higher education institutions in achieving organizational development using knowledge management ? This study was considered a descriptive and analytical study. The social survey method was used. The study found that there is a noticeable increase in the level of influence of knowledge management mechanisms related to "knowledge diagnosis - knowledge acquisition - knowledge generation - knowledge storage and organization - knowledge development and application" and achieving institutional organizational development. The most influential of them was the process of diagnosing knowledge. And that there are many obstacles that hinder knowledge management processes in higher education institutions and their degree is high represented in administrative, technical, human, technological, cultural and organizational obstacles, the most prominent of which is the absence of measures to measure the degree of knowledge exchange among the institution’s employees, as well as the lack of awareness of knowledge management, as well as the lack of knowledge management skills. Staff of the institutions in addition to the lack of organizational units for knowledge management, which negatively affects the organizational development of higher education institutions. At the conclusion of the research, a set of means by which knowledge management processes are achieved in a way that contributes to achieving organizational development in higher education institutions was presented. KEYWORDS: Mechanisms – knowledge management – organizational development. ملخص البحث باللغة العربية يستهدف البحث وصف آليات إدارة المعرفة کأحد أساليب تطوير مؤسسات التعليم العالي في مصر وخاصه مؤسسات تعليم الخدمة الاجتماعية وتحقيق التطوير التنظيمي بها ، وذلک من خلال وصف الآليات المتعلقة بـ " تشخيص المعرفة –اکتساب المعرفة- توليد المعرفة- تخزين وتنظيم المعرفة- وتطوير المعرفة وتطبيقها ". وتعد إدارة المعرفة تعد أحد أهم الوسائل والأساليب التي يمکن أن تساهم في تحسين بيئة النظام التعليمي بمکوناتها المادية والبشرية. وانطلاقا من أن طريقه تنظيم المجتمع کأحد الطرق المهنية في مهنة الخدمة الاجتماعية تسعي إلي تضافر کافه الجهود التي يمکن من خلالها تحقيق تطوير مؤسسي تنظيمي داخل مؤسسات المجتمع ککل متضمنه أهميه التطوير التنظيمي داخل المؤسسات التعليمية کأحد آليات وأساليب ممارسة هذه الطريقة في التطوير التنظيمي وتحقيق الجودة الشاملة للمؤسسة ، حاولت الدراسة الاجابة عن التساؤلات التالية : 1- ما آليات إدارة المعرفة وتحقيق التطوير التنظيمي بمؤسسات التعليم العالي؟ 2- ما واقع آليات إدارة المعرفة وهي ( تشخيص المعرفة-اکتساب المعرفة-توليد المعرفة- تخزين المعرفة- توزيع المعرفة- تطبيق المعرفة-تنظيم المعرفة ) ؟ 3- ما أکثر المعوقات التي تواجه مؤسسات التعليم العالي في تحقيق التطوير التنظيمي باستخدام اداره المعرفة ؟ وتعتبر هذه الدراسة من الدراسات الوصفية التحليلية. وتم استخدام منهج المسح الاجتماعي اسلوب العينة . وتوصلت الدراسة إلي أن هناک ارتفاع ملحوظ في مستوي تأثير آليات إدارة المعرفة المرتبطة بـ " تشخيص المعرفة –اکتساب المعرفة- توليد المعرفة- تخزين وتنظيم المعرفة- وتطوير المعرفة وتطبيقها " وتحقيق التطوير التنظيمي المؤسسي. وکان أکثرهم تأثيرا عملية تشخيص المعرفة. وأن هناک العديد من المعوقات التي تعوق عمليات ادارة المعرفة بمؤسسات التعليم العالي وقد جاءت درجتها مرتفعة وتمثلت في معوقات ادارية وفنية وبشرية وتکنولوجية وثقافية وتنظيمية وابرزها عدم وجود مقاييس لقياس درجة تبادل المعرفة لدى العاملين بالمؤسسة، وايضا قلة الوعي بإدارة المعرفة وکذلک عدم توافر مهارات ادارة المعرفة لدى العاملين بالمؤسسة بالإضافة الى عدم توافر وحدات تنظيمية لإدارة المعرفة ، مما يؤثر سلبا على التطوير التنظيمي بمؤسسات التعليم العالي. وفي ختام البحث تم تقديم مجموعة من الوسائل التي يتم من خلالها تحقيق عمليات إدارة المعرفة بما يساهم في تحقيق التطوير التنظيمي بمؤسسات التعليم العالي. الکلمات المفتاحية : الآليات ، إدارة المعرفة ، التطوير التنظيمي

Archives and libraries have expanded their curatorial capabilities with digital technologies and social media. Digital repositories, content management systems, and social media are part of a dual strategy for curating digital collections, combining the digital preservation of media and community participation in preserving community memory, cultural heritage, and thematic research collections. Socialized digital curation (SoDC) represents the convergence of digital and social curation approaches in a broader framework of relationships across the curation spaces (or functional frameworks) holding the pieces—curators, communities, collections, and technologies—together. Social purposing is evident as curators develop relationships with diverse communities. The cultural, generational, and professional diversity of archivist, librarian, and participant-curator (ALPC) communities further contributes to diversity in collection themes, choice of technologies, and knowledge organization preferences. The growth of digital content and collaborative activity on the Internet, however, has raised concerns about the discoverability of digital content in a fragmented Internet environment, necessitating three curatorial interventions—interlinking, knowledge organization, and documentation—to join disconnected and uninteroperable fragments. The conceptual framework presented in this study focuses on the interrelationships among curators, collections, technologies, and practices. There are no monolithic solutions to curatorial interventions and approaches to SoDC, as all archives and special collections are unique.

The study is devoted to the analysis of the origins, essence, scholarly, and cultural significance of the phenomenon of the Kyiv philosophical school. In the late 1950s – during the 1960s, Ukraine formed relatively favorable conditions for the development of the original direction of the philosophical research studying the logic of scientific knowledge, which resulted in the formulation of a worldview-rationalist concept of constructing scientific theories and obtaining reliable verified knowledge. Considering the impact of this school’s achievements on educational and research practice, we can talk about the paradigmatic status of this generalization due to its acquisition of a strong sociocultural sounding. Thus, Ukrainian science has received logical and methodological guidelines for the stages and processes of scientific research, the importance of various forms of knowledge organization, including ideas, problems, hypotheses, concepts, theories, and, ultimately, systematic knowledge about a particular object in the form of the normative science. The Kyiv philosophical school’s achievements significantly contributed to the formation of the style of scholarly thinking, refuting the incapability of the methodology of science declared by the official Marxist philosophy with its dogmatic regulators of the learning process as a party affiliation principle. The main centers for producing the worldview-rationalist philosophical ideas were Taras Shevchenko State University of Kyiv and the Institute of Philosophy of the UkrSSR Academy of Sciences. Its most famous representatives were P. Kopnin, V. Shynkaruk, M. Popovych, S. Krymskyi, and I. Bychko.

O conceito de metodologias ativas e sua aplicação na Ciência da Informação ainda é considerado um tema escasso de estudo. Adotar metodologias que desenvolvem o fazer docente e o aprendizado discente é uma estratégia potencial no processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Este estudo objetiva apresentar a aplicação da Metodologia da Problematização com o Arco de Maguerez no ensino de conteúdos disciplinares de Organização da Informação e do Conhecimento nos cursos de Ciência da Informação. Considerada como uma pesquisa de natureza explicativa e bibliográfica, buscou-se o apoio em estudos de referência na Educação e na Ciência da Informação para caracterizar as ações pertencentes a metodologia em estudo e a aplicação desta no ensino docente. Para tanto estão caracterizados os pontos de ação do Arco de Maguerez, a saber: observação da realidade, pontos-chave, teorização, hipóteses de solução e aplicação à realidade. Estas ações integram o objetivo da Metodologia da Problematização, as ações do Arco de Maguerez e os temas de organização da informação e do conhecimento, resultado deste artigo.

The mass culling of libraries' print collections has often been questioned by librarians and library users, yet it has become more common in recent decades. Despite several high-profile controversies, the removal and subsequent disposal of large portions of physical collections are still seen by many library authorities as an effective way to create space and pave the way for innovation. Guided by a progressive series of photographs, this article examines the large-scale removal of books from Western University’s D.B Weldon Library as part of a renovation project in 2019. It also looks at the direct impact of these actions on a contemporary library research project that was undertaken by the authors. Focusing specifically on the E, HQ, and HV Library of Congress call number ranges, the changes to the stacks are shown in real time as materials are removed from the collection to be discarded or placed in storage. The authors raise questions about the functions and uses of libraries in our current neoliberal era as well as the logic of an academic library prioritizing study spaces and communal areas at the expense of a well-respected physical collection., L’élimination massive des collections imprimées des bibliothèques a souvent été remise en question par les bibliothécaires et les utilisateurs des bibliothèques, mais elle est devenue plus courante au cours des dernières décennies. Malgré plusieurs controverses très médiatisées, le retrait et l’élimination ultérieure de portions importantes des collections physiques sont toujours considérés par de nombreuses administrations de bibliothèques comme un moyen efficace de créer de l’espace et d’ouvrir la voie à l’innovation. Guidé par une série progressive de photographies, cet article examine le retrait à grande échelle des livres de la bibliothèque D.B Weldon de l’université Western dans le cadre d’un projet de rénovation en 2019. Il examine également l’impact direct de ces actions sur un projet de recherche contemporain en bibliothèque qui a été entrepris par les auteurs. En se concentrant précisément sur les cotes E, HQ et HV de la Library of Congress, les modifications apportées aux piles sont affichées en temps réel au fur et à mesure que les documents sont retirés de la collection pour être mis au rebut ou entreposés. Les auteurs s’interrogent sur les fonctions et les usages des bibliothèques à l’ère néolibérale actuelle, ainsi que sur la logique d’une bibliothèque universitaire qui privilégie les espaces d’étude et les espaces communs au détriment d’une collection physique respectée.

Objetive . Identify the characteristics and relevance of publications in scientific event, the impact of citations (h-index, g-index and citation/year) and the generation of an impact index. Method . The method that applied to investigated was identify the 277 teachers of the Information Science postgraduate schools, and was developed a software to discover the perform and the filtering of the data of the curriculum Lattes (the ProspectorWare), and was used for complementary analysis the Google Scholar and Publish or Perish to identify the impact indexes. Results . The main results we had a very high frequency for scientific events has a National Symposium of Research in Information Science (ENANCIB) and International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) in terms of publication, but the most frequently cited meetings were Intercom, SBPC and ISKO (all with more than 75 citations/year). For the g-index we had as highlight Intercom, ISSI, SBPC and National Encounters of Production Engineering (all with index higher than 15), and for the h-index was Intercom and SBPC (with index higher than 10). In relation to the quality factor system we once again highlight Intercom (factor 68,19), SBPC (factor 15,32), ISSI (13,55) and National Meeting of Production Engineering (11,45). Conclusions . We consider it relevant to highlight that this study is a first contact with the quantification of the quality of the scientific meetings in the Information Science and that it must undergo adjustment in a second attempt, however, it was evident that meeting with larger structures and with the concern in providing content in receive more quotes.

This work presents an experience report in the supervised teaching internship of the master's degree course in Management and Knowledge Organization of the School of Information Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The objective was to address the preparation aspects of the graduate student and report the experience in the classroom regarding the development of the activities and practices of the discipline "Topics in Cataloging and Classification of Information D (MARC, RDA and metadata)”, as well as by the evaluation of discipline, the evaluation of the content acquired in the classroom and the evaluation of the graduate student by the students of the discipline. The case study was used and, as a data collection instrument, a questionnaire (Survey) was applied, in addition to the quantitative approach to data analysis. The results indicate a good evaluation of the discipline regarding the bibliography, methodology, pace of exposure of the classes and the format, structure and organization of the activities, as well as a high knowledge and a good preparation and content explanation by the postgraduate student. However, there was a reasonable perception of knowledge acquired by students on some topics. It is concluded that the teaching internship is the moment in which the graduate student is inserted in the academic teaching universe, the theoretical-practical experience in the classroom, resourcefulness and recognition of skills acquired during the academic career.

The role and place of the scientific problem in the structure of pedagogical research are shown, the nature of the shortcomings in its definition is analyzed, the circumstances and causes of errors are shown. The essence of the category of scientific problem and the process of its formulation in research on pedagogy is revealed. The source of the research problem is the problem situation that precedes the problem and is reflected in the mind of the researcher. The problem is, on the one hand, a kind of question, the answer to which is not contained in the accumulated knowledge, on the other hand, it is a form of thinking that characterizes the lack of available means to achieve the goal of scientific knowledge. Epistemological features of the problem: the form of reflection of the objectively existing problem situation; the starting point of the cognitive cycle, the initial form of knowledge organization; focus on acquiring new knowledge; system of statements and requirements; hierarchically organized set of questions. The process of developing a scientific problem consists of certain stages: preliminary research for the obtained new facts and confirmation of existing ones; discussion of processes and phenomena that cannot be explained within the framework of existing theories - awareness of the problem situation; preliminary analysis of ideas on the basis of which it is possible to achieve a solution to the problem situation - making assumptions; making the preferred solution for a specific study; a preliminary description and interpretation of the problem, determining the relationship between the data on which the problem is based, and theoretical assumptions for its solution; the final formulation and formulation of scientific problems of pedagogical research.

The classification of Western art music is a complex area of knowledge organization, yet the reasons for those complexities have not been fully studied. This article dissects the concept of orthogonality, in particular regard to music classification. Orthogonality (antonym: dependency) means that one facet acts independently from another facet. While orthogonality is an assumed quality of facets, it has attracted relatively little attention in knowledge organization discourse. This article utilizes bibliographic classification schemes, musicological writings, and musical works, to analyse orthogonality in music classification. The relationships between the medium, form/genre and function facets are unpicked and a strong dependency is found between these facets. Whether this orthogonality exists as a construct of faceted classification or stems from the domain knowledge is explored. Furthermore, the analysis initiates new thinking about the general concept of orthogonality. The idea of a spectrum of dependency is proposed. In addition, novel, orthogonality-derived phenomena are discussed – “dynamic facets” and “meta-dependency” – where the boundary between what is and is not a facet are blurred. The concluding model visualizes the chain of dependencies between music facets, ultimately showing how the lack of orthogonality plays a key role in the complexity and issues found in music classification.

This study investigates the relationship between knowledge management (KM) enablers (aspects of organizational structure, learning, strategy, transformational leadership, and information technology) and organizational effectiveness. It also examines the mediating role of KM processes (knowledge creation, knowledge organization, knowledge application, and knowledge protection). Using a web-based questionnaire and the responses from 201 organizations in the Maltese Pharmaceutical Sector, structural equation modelling revealed that various KM enablers produced direct effects on KM processes, and in turn, two KM processes produced direct effects on organizational effectiveness and also mediated the relationship between some KM enablers and organizational effectiveness. This study contributes towards a better understanding of specific aspects of the KM phenomenon and provides several implications that could better assist the management of knowledge to enhance organizational effectiveness.

Michel Foucault é um dos mais importantes autores das Ciências Sociais e Humanas (CSH), responsável por uma diversidade de publicações. A Biblioteconomia e a Ciência da Informação inserem-se no rol das CSH, apropriando-se das correntes de pensamento produzidos pelas ciências, consolidando o diálogo. Deste modo, a partir de um estudo bibliométrico o objetivo desta pesquisa é mapear a presença de Michel Foucault na produção científica nacional da Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação. Para tanto, foi selecionada a Base de Dados de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação (BRAPCI), que indexa os artigos de periódicos nacionais impressos e eletrônicos da área. A coleta de dados foi empreendida em janeiro de 2020, de modo que a cobertura da pesquisa fosse de 1972 a 2019, sendo realizada a partir da consulta dos termos “Foucault” e “Michel Foucault”. Foi observado a partir da sistematização dos 128 artigos selecionados: ano de publicação, autoria, periódico, palavras-chaves, temáticas dos artigos e análise das citações. Foram citadas 362 obras de Michel Foucault, entre livros, capítulos de livros e artigos. Percebemos que Foucault é um referencial teórico-metodológico para a Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação, estando presente desde a década de 1990 no cenário nacional, sobretudo com a “Arqueologia do saber”. Os resultados apontaram também uma concentração das citações em artigos associados aos “Estudos Históricos e Epistemológicos da Ciência da Informação”, “Informação, Educação e Trabalho” e “Organização e Representação do conhecimento”

Organization of Knowledge is directly designated as a field of study related to library and information science. According to this, Organization of Knowledge, is mostly practiced in the domain of library and information science, and has been largely the province of the construction of tools for the storage and retrieval of documentary entities. Organizing helps to maintain the body of knowledge. There are different historical and theoretical approaches and theories regarding organizing knowledge. They are traditional approach, facet analytical approach, bibliometric approach and the domain of analytic approach etc. In this process, the generation of theory has moved from an epistemic stance of pragmatism to empiricism. Ayurveda the science of life has been treated as one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world. There are two main objectives of this study, to explore the organizational patterns of knowledge in Ayurveda System of medicine and to explore specialties of organizational patterns used for knowledge in Ayurveda medicine. This research is based on the survey method. Two types of survey methods were employed i.e. literature survey and field survey. Major Ayurveda classics were used as primary sources of literature in this research. This study confirms that the Ayurveda system of medicine has a systematic, methodical pattern of knowledge organization. It is therefore can be concluded that the knowledge organization in Ayurveda medicine has been done, not based on any other system available elsewhere or at any other period, but on their own system particular to it and is therefore unique.

This article aims to review the important roles of health knowledge organization systems (KOSs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Different types of knowledge organization systems, including term lists, synonym rings, thesauri, subject heading systems, taxonomies, classification schemes, and ontologies are widely recognized and applied in both modern and traditional information systems. Apart from their usage in the management of data, information, and knowledge, KOSs are seen as valuable components for large information architecture, content management, findability improvement, and many other applications. After introducing the challenges of information overload and semantic conflicts, the article reviews the efforts of major health KOSs, illustrates various health coding schemes, explains their usages and implementations, and reveals their implications for health information exchange and communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some general examples of the applications, services, and analysis powered by KOSs are presented at the end. As revealed in this article, they have become even more critical to aid the frontline endeavors to overcome the obstacles due to information overload and semantic conflicts that can occur during devastating historic and worldwide events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goal of any library is to ensure high quality and general availability of information retrieval tools. The paper describes the project implemented by the Russian State Library (RSL) to present Library Bibliographic Classification as a Networked Knowledge Organization System. The project goal is to support content and provide tools for ensuring system’s interoperability with other resources of the same nature (i.e. with Linked Data Vocabularies) in the global network environment. The project was partially supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR).The RSL General Classified Catalogue (GCC) was selected as the main data source for the Classification system of knowledge organization. The meaning of each classification number is expressed by complete string of wordings (captions), rather than the last level caption alone. Data converted to the Resource Description Framework (RDF) files based on the standard set of properties defined in the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) model was loaded into the semantic storage for subsequent data processing using the SPARQL query language. In order to enrich user queries for search of resources, the RSL has published its Classification System in the form of Linked Open Data (https://lod.rsl.ru) for searching in the RSL electronic catalogue. Currently, the work is underway to enable its smooth integration with other LOD vocabularies. The SKOS mapping tags are used to differentiate the types of connections between SKOS elements (concepts) existing in different concept schemes, for example, UDC, MeSH, authority data.The conceptual schemes of the leading classifications are fundamentally different from each other. Establishing correspondence between concepts is possible only on the basis of lexical and structural analysis to compute the concept similarity as a combination of attributes.The authors are looking forward to working with libraries in Russia and other countries to create a common space of Linked Open Data vocabularies.

The article highlights the functioning of the rhizome concept in science and philosophy, with the purpose of identifying the differences that are evident when it is approached in Deleuzoguattariana philosophy and in the social and human sciences. The objective is to analyze how the rhizome concept is appropriate in library and information science (LIS). The notion of rhizome in the writings of Deleuze and Guattari and in the LIS bibliography were explored and described, through bibliographic review and conceptual analysis. It was found that the concept presents different configurations when stated in science and philosophy. In science, greater sense stability is sought, while in philosophy the concept may have meaning linked to a single work. The notion of rhizome is flexible on the philosophical plane and, although it looks for definitions in the LIS, it is a polysemic term. The rhizome concept is potentially important for exploring innovations in the studies of knowledge organization, classification and information retrieval.

PurposeThis study aims to present a new framework for ethical creation and evaluation of multi-perspective knowledge organization systems.Design/methodology/approachApplying Held's understanding of the ethics of care, this paper proposes five operative criteria for ethical building and evaluation of multi-perspective knowledge representation and organization systems.FindingsThis paper argues that a carefully designed multipoint view of representation and organization conforms to the proposed ethical criteria and shifts concerns associated with the expectation of neutrality of library information professionals to the necessity to humanize and diversify the representation and organization of knowledge to build inclusive and equitable systems.Originality/valueThis paper presents multi-perspectiveness as key to ethical knowledge organization. The paper proposes a generic taxonomy of the main stages in the creation of multi-perspective knowledge representation and organization systems and demonstrates how to apply the proposed framework in each stage to ensure ethical outcomes.

In the context of the rapid development of big data and artificial intelligence, knowledge service theory and big data technology are applied to build a smart port supply chain knowledge service model. This model provides a personalized, intelligent, and diversified knowledge-based service system platform solution to port supply chain enterprises, helping to realize port supply chain transformation and upgrading and intelligent integrated operations. This paper analyses and summarizes the research status on knowledge service demand and port supply chain knowledge service during the development and operation of the port supply chain and applies big data and artificial intelligence technologies such as knowledge matching, knowledge fusion, and natural language processing. A port supply chain knowledge service model including knowledge acquisition, knowledge organization and knowledge service modules is constructed. The ontology method is used to construct the ontology knowledge base of the port supply chain, and based on this, computational reasoning experiments are performed. The experiments show that ontology technology demonstrates effectiveness and superiority in constructing a knowledge service system model for the port supply chain in terms of knowledge representation and knowledge reasoning.
