Background: Hemorrhagic shock (HS) is the most common cause of potentially preventable death after traumatic injury. Acute liver injury is an important manifestation of HS. Apoptosis plays an important role in liver injury. Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) can alleviate liver injury. This study aimed to examine the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on hepatocyte apoptosis in HS and its relationship with the FXR pathway. Methods: Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: sham group, HS group, HS + UDCA group, and FXR (-) + HS + UDCA group. There were 6 mice in each group. As to the model of HS, MAP of 40 ± 5 mmHg was maintained for 1 hour. As to UDCA intervention, UDCA (300mg/kg) was given nasally. Real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting were used to detect changes in the expression level of Caspase-3, Bax, LC3Ⅰ, LC3Ⅱ, Bcl-2, and Beclin-1 in the liver. TUNEL assay was used to detect changes in hepatocyte apoptosis. Results: The expression level of Caspase-3 and Bax in the liver decreased significantly after treatment with UDCA under HS conditions. The expression level of LC3Ⅰ, LC3Ⅱ, Bcl-2, and Beclin-1 in the liver increased significantly after treatment with UDCA under HS conditions. TUNEL positive percentage of liver decreased significantly after treatment with UDCA under HS conditions. In the case of FXR (-), the influence of UDCA was inhibited. Conclusions: These results indicated that UDCA could reduce hepatocyte apoptosis during HS through the FXR pathway.

Quartz fiber fabric is widely used in national defense, military and aerospace industries due to its good high-temperature resistance, chemical stability and excellent thermal shock resistance. However, the tendency of quartz fiber fabric to undergo thermal degradation due to crystallization at high temperature may destroy its high-temperature performance, particularly its high-temperature mechanical properties. In this study, an aluminum oxide (Al2O3) ceramic coating was synthesized on the surface of two-dimensional quartz fiber fabric in aqueous solution near room temperature. The surface morphology and chemical composition were studied to evaluate the quality of the coating by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The annealing behavior at high temperature was evaluated by using an electronic universal testing machine after high-temperature processing. The annealing behavior of the aluminum oxide coating could be improved effectively. The maximum load that the coated fabric can bear was 2.5 times higher than that of the original fabric, proving the superior high-temperature mechanical properties of the coated fabric. The coating on the surface of the fiber could block the damage of high temperature to the quartz fiber, improving the crystallization phenomenon of the quartz fiber at high temperature, followed by improvement in the high-temperature mechanical properties of the fabric.

Reducing energy consumption is one of the most effective ways to solve the problem of energy shortage. In this work, nature-inspired paint microgroove arrays with different periods were fabricated using a one-step laser ablation method. A wind tunnel experiment was performed at two wind speeds, 27.7 and 33.3 m/s, to collect drag force data on smooth and structured paint coatings. The results showed that microgroove arrays oriented perpendicular to the flow direction were beneficial to drag reduction, and a drag reduction rate of up to 7.2% was obtained. Meanwhile, the microgroove arrays induced by laser ablation changed the wettability of the paint surface to hydrophobicity. The contact angle shows a slightly decreasing trend with an increase in the periodic scale. Furthermore, the anticorrosion properties of these microgrooves make them advantageous in harsh environments. The fabricated drag-reducing paint microstructures, with the features of self-cleaning and durability, have the potential to be applied on vehicles to realize speed improvement and energy saving.

Nanomaterials (NMs) have increasingly been used for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers (HNCs) over the past decade. HNCs can easily infiltrate surrounding tissues and form distant metastases, meaning that most patients with HNC are diagnosed at an advanced stage and often have a poor prognosis. Since NMs can be used to deliver various agents, including imaging agents, drugs, genes, vaccines, radiosensitisers, and photosensitisers, they play a crucial role in the development of novel technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of HNCs. Indeed, NMs have been reported to enhance delivery efficiency and improve the prognosis of patients with HNC by allowing targeted delivery, controlled release, responses to stimuli, and the delivery of multiple agents. In this review, we consider recent advances in NMs that could be used to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of patients with HNC and the potential for future research.

We analyze the effects of local government debt on the proliferation of zombie firms. With aggregated prefecture-level debt data and firm-level data from 2006 to 2013, the empirical evidence demonstrates that the local government debt significantly exacerbates the “zombification” of local firms, mainly through the credit-favoritism to state-owned enterprises and capital misallocation. Our analysis also shows that the magnitude of zombification effects is influenced by debt liquidity and the primary functions of local government financing vehicles.

The Earth’s surface warming by external forcing depends on location. Warming amplification, or greater surface warming than the global average, occurs in the Arctic and high-elevation regions, including the Tibetan Plateau (TP). We examined the major drivers of TP warming amplification in recent decades (1979–2020) and under future climate scenarios (2061–2100) by applying local energy budget diagnosis of multiple radiative kernels based on state-of-the-art reanalysis datasets and coupled model simulations. From 1979–2020, both the snow-albedo feedback and cloud-radiation feedback strongly affected the seasonality of TP warming (summer vs. winter). Snow cover and albedo decreased significantly in winter but showed only small changes in summer. TP total and low-level cloud cover increased in summer, causing cooling, and decreased in winter, causing warming. During winter, TP warming amplification (1.84 from 1979–2020) is weaker than Arctic amplification (3.64) because the positive contribution of the surface albedo feedback to TP warming is not as strong as the dual warming effects of the lapse rate feedback and surface heat flux observed in the Arctic. Our attribution analyses based on the piControl and Historical simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 confirmed that TP warming is caused by external forcing. Because the external forcing associated with anthropogenic activity is increasing, TP warming will continue to the end of the 21st century. Under likely future warming scenarios, winter TP warming amplification is still less than in the Arctic due to the effects of the lapse rate feedback and surface heat flux.

Background: Abnormalities in white matter (WM) may be a crucial physiologic feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, neuroimaging’s ability to visualize the underlying functional degradation of the WM region in AD is unclear. Objective: This study aimed to explore the differences in amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and fractional ALFF (fALFF) in the WM region of patients with AD and healthy controls (HC) and to investigate further whether these values can provide supplementary information for diagnosing AD. Methods: Forty-eight patients with AD and 46 age-matched HC were enrolled and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and a neuropsychological battery assessment. We analyzed the differences in WM activity between the two groups and further explored the correlation between WM activity in the different regions and cognitive function in the AD group. Finally, a machine learning algorithm was adopted to construct a classifier in detecting the clinical classification ability of the values of ALFF/ALFF in the WM. To compare the outcomes of patients with hematological malignancies who received ATG-Fresenius (ATG-F) 20 mg/kg versus those who received ATG-Genzyme (ATG-G) 10 mg/kg in an unrelated donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) procedure, a total of 186 patients who underwent their first allogeneic HSCT with an unrelated donor were retrospectively analyzed. One hundred and seven patients received ATG-F, and seventy-nine patients received ATG-G. Multivariate analysis showed that the type of ATG preparation had no effect on neutrophil engraftment (P = 0.61), cumulative incidence of relapse (P = 0.092), nonrelapse mortality (P = 0.44), grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) (P = 0.47), chronic GVHD (P = 0.29), overall survival (P = 0.795), recurrence-free survival (P = 0.945) or GVHD-free relapse-free survival (P = 0.082). The last decade has seen an explosion in the identification of genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including Mendelian, de novo, and somatic, factors. These discoveries provide opportunities to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms as well as potential gene-gene and gene-environment interactions, to support novel therapies. Stem cell-based models, particularly human brain organoids, can capture disease-associated alleles in the context of the human genome, engineered to mirror disease-relevant aspects of cellular complexity and developmental timing. These models have brought key insights into NDDs as diverse as microcephaly, autism, and focal epilepsy. But intrinsic organoid-to-organoid variability, low levels of certain brain-resident cell types, and long culture times required to reach maturity can impede progress. Several recent advances incorporate specific morphogen gradients, mixtures of diverse brain cell types, and organoid engraftment into animal models. Together with non-human primate organoid comparisons, mechanisms of human NDDs are emerging.

Background: Digit amputations affect 45,000 Americans each year and are associated with substantial healthcare expenditures and loss of wages. Few patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are validated in patients with digit amputations. The brief Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (bMHQ) is a 12-item PROM used in several hand conditions. However, its psychometric properties have not been investigated in patients with digit amputations. Methods: The reliability and validity of the bMHQ was investigated using Rasch analysis. Data were collected from the Finger Replantation and Amputation Challenges in Assessing Impairment, Satisfaction, and Effectiveness (FRANCHISE) study. Participants were divided into replantation and revision amputation cohorts and then further separated into single-digit amputation (excluding thumb), thumb-only amputation and multiple-digit amputation (excluding thumb) subgroups. Each of the six subgroups were analysed for item fit, threshold ordering, targeting, differential item functioning (DIF), unidimensionality and internal consistency. Results: All treatment groups demonstrated high unidimensionality (Martin-Löf test = 1) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α > 0.85). The bMHQ is not a reliable PROM in individuals with single-digit or multiple-digit amputations. The aesthetics, satisfaction and two-handed activities of daily living (ADLs) items had the poorest fit to the Rasch model across all categories. Conclusions: The bMHQ is not well-suited for measuring outcomes in patients with digit amputations. We recommend clinicians use more comprehensive assessment tools, such as the complete MHQ, to measure outcomes in these complex patient populations. Level of Evidence: Level III (Diagnostic)
