Transparent laser ceramics are the attractive gain medium for solid-state lasers. However, they have not been applied to the fiber lasers due to the difficulty of forming green fibers by traditional methods. In this study, a novel route combined aqueous gelcasting with capillary glass tube was designed to prepare Yb:YAG transparent ceramic fiber with a diameter of 1.0 mm and 43.0 mm in length for the first time. The slurry with high solid loading and low viscosity was smartly inhaled into the capillary glass tube to conquer the difficulty of casting. The green fibers without cracks and deformation had highly dense microstructure. The in-line transmittance of highly doped 15.0 at.% Yb:YAG transparent ceramic disc prepared from the same preparation conditions of Yb:YAG ceramic fiber was 80.0 % at 1064 nm. This study provides a novel route to prepare transparent ceramic fiber differing from extrusion processing, promoting the development of fiber laser.

The discovery of single structure Ce3+ doped garnet transparent ceramics (TCs) with a broad full width at half maximum (FWHM) is essential to realize a high CRI for high-power white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs). In this work, by utilizing the ion substitution engineering strategy, pure phase Gd3Sc2Al3O12:Ce3+ (GSAG:Ce) TC with a broad FWHM of 132.4 nm and a high CRI value of 80.7 was fabricated through the vacuum sintering technique for the first time. The optimized in-line transmittance of TCs was 58.4% @ 800 nm. Notably, the GSAG:Ce TCs exhibited a remarkable red shift from 546 nm to 582 nm, with a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 46.91%. The degraded thermal stability in Ce:GSAG TCs was observed compared with that of Ce:YAG TC, owing to the narrowed band gap of GSAG. Additionally, remote excitation white LEDs/LDs were constructed by combining GSAG:Ce TCs with blue LED chips or laser sources. A tunable color hue from yellow to shinning white was achieved in white LEDs, whereas the acquired CRI and CCT of the white LDs were 69.5 and 7766 K, respectively. This work provides a new perspective to develop TCs with high CRI for their real applications in high-power white LEDs/LDs.

The Cr4+-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Cr4+:YAG) saturable absorber, a new generation of passively Q-switched solid-state laser material, faces a significant obstacle of low conversion rate of chromium from trivalent to tetravalent, degrading efficiency in a passively Q-switched laser. In this paper, highly transparent Cr4+:YAG ceramics were fabricated and committed to compare the laser performance with Cr4+:YAG crystals on a 1 μm passively Q-switched laser. Thanks to the grain boundary effect, the Cr4+ conversion efficiency of 0.05 at.% Cr4+:YAG transparent ceramics coated with high transparency (HT) films (T=86.46% at 1064 nm) was nine times higher than that of 0.1 at.% Cr4+:YAG single crystals coated with HT films (T=84.00% at 1064 nm). Differing from the counterpart Cr4+:YAG crystals, no absorption saturation tendency was observed for the 0.05 at.% Cr:YAG ceramics when the pump power exceeded ∼1900 mW. Furthermore, the repetition frequency reached 217 kHz for 0.05 at.% Cr:YAG ceramics, which was a three-fold factor increase from that of the corresponding single crystal. The advantages of transparent ceramics over single crystals were proved through laser performance for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. This study also provided compelling evidence for replacing single crystals with ceramics for ultrafast dynamics.
