The Powell Basin is a small oceanic basin located at the NE end of the Antarctic Peninsula developed during the Early Miocene and mostly surrounded by the continental crusts of the South Orkney Microcontinent, South Scotia Ridge and Antarctic Peninsula margins. Gravity data from the SCAN 97 cruise obtained with the R/V Hespérides and data from the Global Gravity Grid and Sea Floor Topography (GGSFT) database (Sandwell and Smith, 1997) are used to determine the 3D geometry of the crustal-mantle interface (CMI) by numerical inversion methods. Water layer contribution and sedimentary effects were eliminated from the Free Air anomaly to obtain the total anomaly. Sedimentary effects were obtained from the analysis of existing and new SCAN 97 multichannel seismic profiles (MCS). The regional anomaly was obtained after spectral and filtering processes. The smooth 3D geometry of the crustal mantle interface obtained after inversion of the regional anomaly shows an increase in the thickness of the crust towards the continental margins and a NW-SE oriented axis of symmetry coinciding with the position of an older oceanic spreading axis. This interface shows a moderate uplift towards the western part and depicts two main uplifts to the northern and eastern sectors.

Resumen Introducción y objetivo. La utilidad de las redes sociales como medio de difusión de la Cirugía Plástica, y específicamente en cuestiones académicas, es un área en desarrollo. Estudios recientes han demostrado el uso de la etiqueta (hashtag) #CirugiaPlastica. Sin embargo, no se ha estudiado la influencia de los congresos nacionales e internacionales en la difusión del conocimiento a través de las redes sociales, tema que nos proponemos estudiar en el presente artículo. Material y método. Realizamos un análisis retrospectivo de los tuits publicados en español con las palabras "CirugiaPlastica" o la etiqueta #CirugiaPlastica, comparando 5 grupos en relación a los congresos más importantes de la especialidad en español: 1. Grupo control días laborables (no coincidente con congresos de Cirugía Plástica); 2. Grupo control fin de semana (no coincidente con congresos de Cirugía Plástica); 3. Grupo Congreso Iberolatinoamericano; 4. Grupo Jornada Monográfica SECPRE (Sociedad Española de Cirugía Plástica, Reparadora y Estética); 5. Grupo Congreso AECEP (Asociación Española de Cirugía Estética Plástica). Analizamos, entre otras, las siguientes variables: identidad del autor, tema del tuit, uso de la etiqueta #CirugiaPlastica, finalidad educativa o promocional y disponibilidad de enlace a un artículo científico. Resultados. Revisamos 1165 tuits. Los realizados por cirujanos plásticos, instituciones académicas y sociedades científicas supusieron un 13.44% en los grupos control frente a un 18.52% en los grupos congreso (p-valor= 0.02). La presencia de un congreso nacional o internacional no aumentó de manera significativa el número de tuits educacionales, ni el número de enlaces a artículos científicos (p-valor> 0.05). Conclusiones. En el ámbito de la Cirugía Plástica, los congresos analizados no han demostrado una repercusión estadísticamente significativa en el contenido educacional de los tuits. Las redes sociales deberían ser potenciadas durante estos congresos para aumentar la difusión y conocimiento de nuestra especialidad.

Continuous instability dynamics over time is inferred to have affected the palaeo-trough mouth fans present in the study area. The combined analysis of paleomorphology, stratigraphy and seismic facies has revealed repeated large-scale slope failures that have governed the sedimentary architecture and morphology of the area throughout the Plio-Quaternary. The depositional architecture of the Gebra Valley, which is the most striking morphological feature in the area, determine the asymmetrical morphology of the complex that is characterized, from east to west, by an open-slope margin flanking the sidewall of the Gebra Valley, the Gebra Valley itself and a SW margin that is connected to the Magia area by a large scar approximately 7.8 km to the SW. The Gebra Valley is a Quaternary debris valley resulting from repeated large-scale mass-transport and cut-and-fill processes. In contrast, the Magia area is dominated by unchannelized sedimentary instability processes, resulting in a different sedimentary architecture and morphology. The nearsurface sediments in the Gebra-Magia Complex document the continuous occurrence of recent mass movements, as also evidenced by flows transported downslope as unchannelized or channelized flows. Taking into account the presence of faults and the stratigraphic correlation established with glacial periods, the genesis of the complex could have been controlled by the interplay of both the tectonic history of the Bransfield Basin and the glacial cycles that allowed grounding events to reach the upper continental slope

Despite advances in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, human skin substitutes remain a clear goal to achieve. Autografts remain the principal clinical option. The long-term changes in dermis, as well as its response after injuries, are not well known. Research in this field has been hindered by a lack of experimental animal models. This study analyzes the architectural dermal scaffold (collagen and elastin fibers plus fibrillin-microfibrils) changes in a model of human skin pressure ulcers in mice. Immunosuppressed NOD/Scid mice (n=10) were engrafted with human skin of dimensions 4x3 cm. After 60 days as a permanent graft, a pressure ulcer (PU) was created in the human skin using a compression device. Three study groups were established: full-thickness skin graft before (hFTSG) and after applying mechanical pressure (hFTSG-PU). Native human skin was used as control group. Evaluations were conducted with visual and histological assessment. Scaffold components from each group were compared by immunohistochemical staining (tropoelastin, collagen I and III, metalloproteins (MMP), fibulins, and lysil oxidases (LOX) among others). The long-term engrafted skin showed a certain degradative state of dermis scaffold, as noticed by the active expression of MMPs and tropoelastin compared to native skin. However, a great reparative response after pressure ulcer onto the engrafted skin was observed. A significant increase of fibrillin microfibrils components (TGF-β, MAGP-1 and fibrillin-1), and matrix suprastructures of collagen I, III and LOX lead to an active restructuration of dermal tissue. Our human skin model in mice revealed the important role of the dermal scaffold component to reach skin stability and its capability to react to mechanical pressure injuries. These results showed the important role of dermal scaffold to support the histoarchitecture and mechanosensation of the human skin.

El binomio turismo-móvil es algo cada vez más presente en el sector turístico, un asunto sobre el que se ha vertido y vierte muchos ríos de tinta desde el mundo empresarial. Sin embargo, es poco lo que se ha escrito desde el ámbito científico, dándole rigor a aquello que ya se presupone o estableciendo patrones y modelos que ayuden a ser más eficaces y eficientes en la gestión de las empresas turísticas. Ante esta circunstancia, y a través de las dos principales bases de datos de literatura científica a nivel mundial (Web of Science y Scopus), el presente estudio hace un recorridopor aquellos artículos científicos que versan sobre la temática planteada, poniendo de manifiesto el escaso número de literatura científica sobre tal materia, a la vez que dilucidando qué países y universidades se encuentran a la vanguardia de la investigación sobre turismo y tecnología móvil. The tourism-mobile pairing is something increasingly present in the tourism sector, a matter on which has been poured and pours many rivers of ink from the business world. However, there is little literature that has been written from the scientific field, giving rigor to what already assumed or establishing patterns and models that help to be more effective and efficient in tourism enterprisesmanagement. Under this circumstance, and through the two main databases of scientific literature worldwide (Web of Science and Scopus), this study makes a review of those scientific articles about the topic proposed, highlighting the small number scientific literature on this subject, while elucidating what countries and universities are at the forefront of research on tourism and mobile technology.

El reciclaje turístico del litoral, estancado en el modelo de Sol y Playa encuentra en el turismo cultural y en la imprescindible incorporación de las TICs una oferta complementaria y por ende más competitiva. Las administraciones ya son conscientes de esta necesidad, aunque encuentran limitaciones en el uso de las tecnologías y en la aproximación patrimonial, carente de un rigor que el turista especializado demanda. In this article, some of the main contributions to BI (Bio-Impedance) parameter-based systems for medical, biological and industrial fields, oriented to develop micro laboratory systems are summarized. These small systems are enabled by the development of new measurement techniques and systems (labs), based on the impedance as biomarker. The electrical properties of the life mater allow the straightforward, low cost and usually non-invasive measurement methods to define its status or value, with the possibility to know its time evolution. This work proposes a review of bio-impedance based methods being employed to develop new LoC (Lab-on-a-Chips) systems, and some open problems identified as main research challenges, such as, the accuracy limits of measurements techniques, the role of the microelectrode-biological impedance modeling in measurements and system portability specifications demanded for many applications. IX Congreso Geológico de España, 12-14 septiembre 2016, Huelva.-- 4 pages, 4 figures., [EN] The GEBRA-MAGIA complex is an important example of submarine mass-movement located in the lower continental slope of the the Central Bransfield Basin (CBB) in the Antarctic Peninsula. Based on the identification of the main features, repeated slope failures are inferred to have affected the area configuring the GEBRA-MAGIA complex. It is therefore classified as a mass-movement composite that has contributed to the outbuilding of the lower continental slope by merging different mass-transport deposits. This complex is composed of the GEBRA valley to the east and an irregular area to the west (MAGIA area) where numerous instability features affect the seafloor. The GEBRA valley has been defined as a Quaternary Debris valley formed as a result of repeated large-scale mass transport processes. This evolution has determined its striking relief and the architecture of this part of the continental slope. Although sedimentary instabilities are also the main processes, in the case of the adjacent area of MAGIA, the resulting sedimentary architecture and morphology are completely different. The new data recorded in the poorly known area of MAGIA allowed defining the occurrence of flows intercalated with mass transport of diverse magnitude as the main recent processes along the whole GEBRAMAGIA complex., [ES] El complejo GEBRA-MAGIA es un significativo ejemplo de procesos de inestabilidad sedimentaria submarina que se localiza en el talud continental inferior de la Península Antártica, en la Cuenca de Bransfield central (CBB). La identificación de sus principales características morfosedimentarias, permite inferir que el complejo GEBRA-MAGIA ha sido configurado por la combinación de diferentes depósitos de transporte en masa que se han repetido a través del tiempo contribuyendo a la evolución del talud continental. El valle GEBRA se ha definido como un valle Cuaternario formado como resultado de repetidos procesos de inestabilidad a gran escala. Esta evolución ha determinado su marcada morfología así como la arquitectura sedimentaria de esta parte del talud continental. Aunque las inestabilidades sedimentarias son también los principales procesos, en la zona adyacente de MAGIA, la arquitectura y la morfología resultantes son completamente diferentes. IX Congreso Geológico de España, Huelva, Septiembre 2016, The Drake Passage is an oceanic gateway of about 850 km width located between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula that connects the southeastern Pacific and the southwestern Atlantic oceans and is an important gateway for mantle flow, oceanographic water masses, and migrations of biota. This gateway developed within the framework of geological evolution of the Scotia Arc. As a consequence of this and subsequent submarine processes, this region shows a varied physiography. The new detailed map in the Drake Passage region is mainly founded on a compilation of precise multibeam bathymetric data obtained on cruises between 1992 and 2014, and covers the area between parallels 52ºS and 63ºS and meridians 70ºW and 50ºW. The new map that we present is based in a DTM with 200 m cell resolution of the seafloor in Drake Passage that permits identification of the main seafloor features and the map includes additional useful geological information. In the particular case of Antarctic continental margins, there are some important examples, some of them well-documented like the case of the GEBRA Debris Valley, located on the lower continental slope of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Central Bransfield Basin-CBB. It has been defined as a Quaternary Debris Valley formed as a result of repeated large-scale mass transport processes. This feature is included in the so-called GEBRA-MAGIA sedimentary instability complex formed by the GEBRA itself and a cluster of mass wasting features that makes up the MAGIA complex. New data from MAGIA are presented in this work with the aim to characterize its morphosedimentary features and the disintegrative dynamic affecting the area

La aparición y posterior evolución de las tecnologías de la información y comunicaciones (TIC), han supuesto un gran cambio en el entorno en el que se desarrolla la industria turística. La formación de la mano de obra especializada para cubrir la demanda del sector turístico a nivel universitario se encuentra en pleno proceso de cambio ante la entrada en vigor del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior que está suponiendo el surgimiento y modificación de nuevas titulaciones y planes de estudio. En el caso de los estudios universitarios en turismo, el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior implica la desaparición de la Diplomatura en Turismo y la aparición del nuevo Grado en Turismo. En cualquier caso, la formación en materia turística debe cubrir las necesidades que en diversas áreas de conocimiento, como la de las TIC, tienen las empresas del sector. En el presente estudio se ha analizado la relevancia que un grupo de seis destacadas universidades españolas otorgan a las TIC en sus estudios turísticos a través de dos medios: el análisis de las competencias a desarrollar por los alumnos de turismo y de la importancia real otorgada a dichas asignaturas, medida según su peso en créditos, en los planes de estudio.

A system for cell-culture real-time monitoring based on ECIS techniques, using the Oscillation-Based Test (OBT) meethodology is proposed. The system transforms a Cell-Culture under Test (CCUT) ¡nto a suitable 'bioIogical' oscillator, using only a DC power supply. Thanks to cell-electrode electrical models employed, the oscillation parameters obtained can be directly related with biological test. The system simulations solve with a 0.16 Hz/μm2 resolution on cell area detection for a proposed 50 x 50 μm2 microelectrode area.

Gemma Ercilla ...et al. -- 4 páginas, 2 figuras. -- VIII Congreso Geológico de España, Oviedo., [EN] This paper presents a new view of recent sedimentation in the Alboran Sea, based on the analysis of the largest database of available seismic profiles in that sea. The results reveal that contourites represent the main morphosedimentary features that characterize the margins and basins. Several types of contourite features have been characterized, both depositional (plastered, sheeted, elongated-separated, confined, and channel-related) and erosive (moats, terraces and furrows). These elements are interrupted by the construction of turbidite fans, mainly in the Spanish margin, and by sedimentary instabilities that locally affect to the open slope, Alboran Ridge and morphological highs. This new morphosedimentary view of the Alboran Sea reveals for the first time the important role of along slope processes (transport, sedimentation and erosion) associated with Mediterranean water masses., [ES] En este trabajo se presenta una nueva visión de la sedimentación reciente en el Mar de Alborán, en base al análisis de la mayor base de datos con perfiles sísmicos disponibles en dicho mar. Los resultados obtenidos revelan que las contornitas representan el principal elemento morfosedimentario que caracteriza a los márgenes y las cuencas. Se han caracterizado varios tipos de elementos contorníticos deposicionales (crestas adosadas, laminares, elongadas-separadas, confinadas y de canal) y erosivos (fosas, terrazas y surcos). Estos elementos están interrumpidos por la construcción de abanicos turbidíticos, principalmente en el margen español, y por inestabilidades sedimentarias que afectan localmente al talud abierto, a la Dorsal de Alborán y a los altos morfológicos. Now, we have reviewed all the available data with the purpose of improving the detail of the previous stratigraphy by adding new chronostratigraphic boundaries (Lower Pliocene Revolution –LPR-, Base Quaternary Discontinuity –BQD- and Middle Pleistocene Revolution –MPR-) with paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic significances. Their addition have allowed tracking the effects of the Mediterranean water masses on the sedimentation since the opening the Strait of Gibraltar. The new results indicate that the Pliocene and Quaternary sedimentary record is mainly characterized by contourites, comprising both depositional and erosive features, that contribute to the outbuilding of the margins and infilling of the basins. Thus, a new Plio-Quaternary sedimentary evolution model with dominance of the alongslope processes has been established for the Alboran Sea., [ES] Desde el inicio de la investigación científica en el Mar de Alborán en los años 80 se han presentado varios trabajos de estratigrafía Plio-Cuaternaria. Recientemente hemos revisado todos los datos disponibles con el propósito de mejorar el nivel de detalle de la estratigrafía previa, añadiendo nuevos límites cronoestratigráficos (Lower Pliocene Revolution –LPR-, Base Quaternary Discontinuity –BQD- y Middle Pleistocene Revolution –MPR-) con significados paleoclimático y paleoceanográfico. Su inclusión nos ha permitido rastrear los efectos de las masas de agua mediterráneas sobre la sedimentación desde la apertura del Estrecho de Gibraltar. New insights into the Messinian salinity crisis: Zanclean reflooding erosion in the Gibraltar-Alboran Sea connection area. 13th Congress RCMNS (International Union of Geological Sciences), Earth System Evolution and the Mediterranean area from 23Ma to present. Naples, (Italy), 2-6 September 2009., The Gibraltar Strait-Alboran Sea connection is a key area to understand the zanclean reflooding of the Mediterranean basin, at the end of the messinian salinity crisis. In spite of this importance, suggested by many authors, little is known about the submarine geological record of this area where the large magnitude of the Earliest Zanclaean reflooding had to produce a great impact in the sedimentary record. In order to fill this gap, an integration of recent an ancient seismic data (single and multichannel profiles) around the Alboran side of the Gibraltar Arc has been done. The study of these data has permitted an improvement of the seismic stratigraphy trough correlation with the DSDP 121 and ODP 976 drills, and a detailed view of the messinian surface. The prelimirary results indicate the existence of a striking erosive channel-like feature in front of the Gibraltar Strait related with the Zanclaean reflooding of the Mediterranean Sea. Likewise, several terraces and canyons are identified on the Spanish margin nearby the Gibraltar Strait probably related with sea level fluctuations during the Messinian salinity crisis.

The Powell Basin is a small oceanic basin located at the NE end of the Antarctic Peninsula developed during the Early Miocene and mostly surrounded by the continental crusts of the South Orkney Microcontinent, South Scotia Ridge and Antarctic Peninsula margins. Gravity data from the SCAN 97 cruise obtained with the R/V Hespérides and data from the Global Gravity Grid and Sea Floor Topography (GGSFT) database (Sandwell and Smith, 1997) are used to determine the 3D geometry of the crustal-mantle interface (CMI) by numerical inversion methods. Water layer contribution and sedimentary effects were eliminated from the Free Air anomaly to obtain the total anomaly. Sedimentary effects were obtained from the analysis of existing and new SCAN 97 multichannel seismic profiles (MCS). The regional anomaly was obtained after spectral and filtering processes. The smooth 3D geometry of the crustal mantle interface obtained after inversion of the regional anomaly shows an increase in the thickness of the crust towards the continental margins and a NW-SE oriented axis of symmetry coinciding with the position of an older oceanic spreading axis. This interface shows a moderate uplift towards the western part and depicts two main uplifts to the northern and eastern sectors.

The seismic character of the units is indicative of active bottom flows, which developed extensive drifts under the influence of the Weddell Sea Bottom Water (WSBW) and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The opening of the connection between Jane Basin and the Scotia Sea is marked by a major regional unconformity that recorded a reorganization of bottom flows. Instead, there are separate basins underlain by oceanic or thinned continental crust, young in age. 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, Tectonic control by subsiding grabens parallel to the Ebro continental margin created a steep narrow slope and rise that resulted in development of coexisting aprons, channel-levee complexes, and a fan, all fed by the same Ebro River source. In unstable steep-slope terrain, mass movement of material caused wide gullied canyons and deposition of nonchannelized base-of-slope aprons that extend 50 km across the rise. Within stable continental-margin areas, channelized turbidity currents formed individual narrow canyons and channel-levee complexes from north to south, successively, at different low sea level stands. Tectonically induced steep gradients (1:25-1:130) across the continental rise and northeastward in Valencia Trough caused sediment to bypass 200 km down Valencia alley and deposit on Valencia Fan at its end, thus preventing direct development of Ebro channel-levee complexes into fans. When a single source fed channel B for a relatively long period, however, (1) fan-valley sinuosity increased, (2) channel walls were modified through undercutting, slumping, and crevasse splays, and (3) channel bifurcation occurred, although lower fan lobes and a complete fan never developed. The dominance of local tectonic control thus aborted fan development in proximal regions on the continental margin near the Ebro River source and displaced fan formation to a distal site in the Valencia Trough basin. During low sea level stands, continued different local tectonic and sediment-source controls resulted in aprons, channel-levee complexes, and fans forming simultaneously from the same source and without evolving from one type of turbidite system to another. Complex ancient turbidite systems similar to those along the Ebro margin may be anticipated in the stratigraphic record of tectonically active settings like the alpine basins of Europe

En este trabajo se analizan 18 testigos de pistón, obtenidos en el Margen Balear y Escarpe de Mazarrón, constituídos principalmente por alternancias de lodos hemipelágicos. Estas alternancias se caracterizan por ciclos con un término basa1 de Iodos grises, que pasan bruscamente y a travks de una delgada capa de acumulaciones de óxidos metálicos, a Iodos calcáreos. El análisis de componentes principales de las variables sedimentológicas y metales pone de manifiesto la existencia de dos factores independientes, el primero de los cuales está constituido por las variables relacionadas con los componentes terrígenos y biógenos. A partir de las tasas de sedimentación absoluta de los Iodos grises y lodos calcáreos, y de los contenidos medios en carbonato de cada uno de estos, se deduce una mayor productividad en la zona fótica en los períodos de mayor tasa de sedimentación como consecuencia del mayor aporte de nutrientes. Sin embargo dicho incremento de la productividad viene enmascarado en el sedimento por el efecto de dilución por los componentes terrigenos. El segundo factor del análisis de componentes principales agrupa a los metales, con la única excepción del plomo cuya concentración depende de la proporción y características de los componentes biógenos. La distribución de las acumulaciones de óxidos metálicos en la columna sedimentaria sugiere que estas se han desarrollado como consecuencia del cambios bruscos en las características de la sedimentación y concretamente en el contenido en materia orgánica oxidable acumulada en el sedimento. Las condiciones suboxidantes y reductoras, se dan en los niveles de Iodos grises correspondientes a los períodos de mayor productividad y mayor espesor de la zona de contenido mfnimo en oxígeno en la columna de agua. Dichas condiciones, junto con la reducción de la porosidad por efecto de la compactación del sedimento, favorecen la migración hacia arriba de los iones disueltos en los fluidos intersticiales. La acumulación de estos se da en la zona de la columna sedimentaria en la cual existe oxigeno disuelto, que favorece la precipitación de las fases sólidas en la interfase entre la zona deficiente en oxígeno y la zona oxidante. Por el contrario las acumulaciones de óxidos intercalados en lodos calcáreos finamente laminados (protosapropeles), con claros indicios de condiciones anóxicas en el fondo, se interpretan como precipitaciones a partir de la formación de una superficie de estratificación en las masas de agua.

[ES] El estudio sedimentológico de testigos continuos de pistón, complementado con el análisis de perfiles de sísmica de reflexión del talud y ascenso continental sur-balear, ha permitido caracterizar tres grupos de sedimentos genéticamente relacionados. Los sedimentos gravitativos, volumétricamente los más abundantes, son los únicos presentes en la mayoría del talud continental. Entre éstos se incluyen las arenas de desbordamiento, las arenas limosas gravitativas, los lodos gravitativos y los lodos de talud. Estos sedimentos muestran una clara afinidad con las diferentes provincias deposicionales del margen y una gradación entre ellos hacia aguas profundas. Las turbiditas y las hemipelagitas están preferentemente en los sectores más distales del margen y asimismo gradan con los otros sedimentos gravitativos. Los índices de sedimentación tienen una correlación directa con los tipos de procesos responsables de los diferentes depósitos. Los mayores índices aparecen en los sedimentos atribuidos a procesos gravitativos en masa (más de 70 cms/103 años), y los menores en las hemipelagitas (2-8 cms/103 años). No obstante los índices característicos de cada provincia del margen en general no guardan relación con los reducidos espesores de sedimentos del PlioCuaternario calculadas en los perfües sísmicos. Este hecho implica una resedimentación de los depósitos que son transportados progresivamente a las provincias-más disthes del margen. La evolución geodinámica reciente de estas provincias y su geomorfología, parecen ser los factores de control más importantes de la geometría del recubrimiento sedimentario. Aunque la distribución de los depósitos en las diferentes provincias está fundamentalmente controlada por la batimetría y la morfología, hay otra serie de factores que influyen notablemente en la sedimentación. Entre elios se deben incluir, el aporte o facilidad de acceso de los sedimentos del área fuente y las condiciones oceanográficas. Durante el Cuatemario superior, estos factores han experimentado notables variaciones como resultado de los cambios clim~ticoeust~ticolso,s cuales han quedado registrados en los sedimentos del margen sur-balear. El modelo deposicional propuesto para este margen puede encontrar aplicación para otros ejemplos de márgenes actuales de tipo pasivo y para la interpretación de series antiguas en el registro geológico., [EN] Three geneticaiiy related groups of sediments on the slope and rise of the southern Balearic continental margin have been characterised on the basis of detailed analyses of piston cores compiemented by high resolution and airgun seismic profiles. Gravitative sediment types are the most abundant on the slope where they include shelfedge spiii-over sands, gravitative silty sands, gravitative muds and shallow water muds. Complete and base cutaut turbidites, hemipelagites and less abundant contourites predominate on the more distal continental margin. These sediments show a gradation and a preferential distribution in the several provinces of the margin. Sedimentation rates reflect the processes that develop each sediment type. The highest rates coxrespond to sediments attributed to mass-gravity processes (more than 70 cm/103 yr) while the lowest rates are obsewed in the hemipelagic muds (2-8 cm /lo3 yr). Plio-Quaternary slope deposits, however, are much thinner than expected from the sedimentation rates. We believe that this is due to mass flow of the slope sediments to more distal areas. The principal factors controlling the geometry of the depositional systems seem to be the recent evolution and the geomorphology of the margin provinces. Other factors that influence sedunentation on the distal margin include the sediment supply or l.he accessibility of the sediment supply from the more proximal areas (continental shelf and shore line) and the oceanographic conditions. During the Upper Quatemary these factors have varied largely as a result of climatic and eustatic oscillations. miese oscillations are clearly reflected by cyclic pattems in the hemipelagic sediments of the southern Baleanc margin.
