Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study was intended to reveal the effect of the instructional environment on the performance of the subject specialists. The purpose of the was to find out correlation exists between instructional environment and performance of the SS in terms of exam results of students in HSSC Part II and to find out correlation exists between the performance of SS within the classroom and the availability of a conducive instructional environment in schools. Methodology: Quantitative method with descriptive research was used in this study. Checklist and student's exam results were used to collect the data and analyses were done through SPSS. Main Findings: There found a significant negative correlation between instructional environment and performance of the SS in terms of exam results of students in HSSC Part II and there found a significant negative correlation between the performance of SS within the classroom and the availability of a conducive instructional environment in schools. Applications of this study: This study is applicable in the given context of Southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as the results can be utilized and checked in another context within the province and in the country. This study will surely contribute to bringing the attention of policymakers and government officials to put their efforts into improving the current situation related to the instructional environment and performance of the subject specialists. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in the results that contradict usual and normal results that show that the instructional environment has a positive association with the performance of the teachers. This study brings into light the opposite side of the worldwide results. This will open grounds for future researchers to work in this area in different contexts to explore that whether a negative correlation exists in other contexts and if so, what factors are contributing to developing such a negative relationship.

Abstract

Inspired by Lehmer's conjecture on the nonvanishing of the Ramanujan $\tau$-function, one may ask whether an odd integer $\alpha$ can be equal to $\tau(n)$ or any coefficient of a newform $f(z)$. Balakrishnan, Craig, Ono, and Tsai used the theory of Lucas sequences and Diophantine analysis to characterize non-admissible values of newforms of even weight $k\geq 4$. We use these methods for weight $2$ and $3$ newforms and apply our results to $L$-functions of modular elliptic curves and certain $K3$ surfaces with Picard number $\ge 19$. Abstract

Introduction: Previous data has pointed towards worse outcomes with COVID-19 disease in the presence of obesity. Through sustained weight loss and improvement in metabolic co-morbids, a history of bariatric surgery may be hypothesized to reduce the risk of severe COVID-19 disease. However, the outcomes of COVID-19 disease in patients with obesity have not been explored. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on the multi-institutional research network TriNETX. Patients with COVID-19 were identified and divided into cohorts based on history of bariatric surgery (BS cohort and non-BS cohort). Clinical outcomes were compared in unmatched and propensity score matched analyses with patients matched 1:1 based on known risk factors of severe COVID-19 disease. Patients with no history of bariatric surgery but with clinical attributes qualifying for these procedures were identified and included in a 'bariatric procedure qualifying' group for sensitivity analysis. Results: Unmatched analysis revealed lower risk of mechanical ventilation or mortality at 30 days after COVID-19 diagnosis in the BS cohort compared to the non-BS cohort (1.07% vs 2.58%, Risk Ratio 0.41, 95% CI: 0.26 - 0.65). Lower risk of need for mechanical ventilation and lower mortality was noted in the bariatric surgery cohort. In the propensity score matched analysis, there was lower risk of reaching primary endpoint of mechanical ventilation or mortality in the BS cohort compared to the non-BS cohort (1.07% vs 3.09%, RR 0.35, 95% CI: 0.21 - 0.58). Mortality rate was lower in the BS cohort, and patients in the BS group were less likely to require critical care, mechanical ventilation, or develop acute kidney injury after COVID-19 diagnosis Log Rank tests revealed worse survival in both matched and unmatched analysis in the non-BS cohort when compared to the BS group (Log rank p values , 0.01 for all analyses). Subgroup analysis was performed comparing the RYGB and sleeve gastrectomy subgroups. No difference was noted in any clinical outcome on unmatched or matched analysis. On sensitivity analysis comparing BS group with BS qualifying cohort, lower rate of mortality, mechanical ventilation, need for critical care was noted in BS cohort (Table 1). Conclusion: In CONCLUSION:, our propensity matched analysis of a large cohort, we have found that a history of bariatric surgery is associated with a reduced risk of poor outcomes of COVID-19 disease compared to a cohort of obese patients as well as the general population..

Abstract

We studied the impact of 2D and 3D educational contents on learning and memory recall using electroencephalography (EEG) brain signals. For this purpose, we adopted a classification approach that predicts true and false memories in case of both short term memory (STM) and long term memory (LTM) and helps to decide whether there is a difference between the impact of 2D and 3D educational contents. In this approach, EEG brain signals are converted into topomaps and then discriminative features are extracted from them and finally support vector machine (SVM) which is employed to predict brain states. For data collection, half of sixty-eight healthy individuals watched the learning material in 2D format whereas the rest watched the same material in 3D format. After learning task, memory recall tasks were performed after 30 minutes (STM) and two months (LTM), and EEG signals were recorded. In case of STM, 97.5% prediction accuracy was achieved for 3D and 96.6% for 2D and, in case of LTM, it was 100% for both 2D and 3D. The statistical analysis of the results suggested that for learning and memory recall both 2D and 3D materials do not have much difference in case of STM and LTM.

PubMed: 30403574, 2-s2.0-85057337718, BACKGROUND Patients who have had an acute coronary syndrome are at high risk for recurrent ischemic cardiovascular events. We sought to determine whether alirocumab, a human monoclonal antibody to proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9), would improve cardiovascular outcomes after an acute coronary syndrome in patients receiving high-intensity statin therapy. METHODS We conducted a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 18,924 patients who had an acute coronary syndrome 1 to 12 months earlier, had a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level of at least 70 mg per deciliter (1.8 mmol per liter), a non-highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol level of at least 100 mg per deciliter (2.6 mmol per liter), or an apolipoprotein B level of at least 80 mg per deciliter, and were receiving statin therapy at a high-intensity dose or at the maximum tolerated dose. Patients were randomly assigned to receive alirocumab subcutaneously at a dose of 75 mg (9462 patients) or matching placebo (9462 patients) every 2 weeks. The dose of alirocumab was adjusted under blinded conditions to target an LDL cholesterol level of 25 to 50 mg per deciliter (0.6 to 1.3 mmol per liter). The primary end point was a composite of death from coronary heart disease, nonfatal myocardial infarction, fatal or nonfatal ischemic stroke, or unstable angina requiring hospitalization. 9. Tobacco control laws in Pakistan and their implementation: A pilot study in Karachi

Abstract

In order to limit the high prevalence of tobacco use in Pakistan various tobacco control laws have been implemented. The objective of this study is to serve as a pilot study to assess the implementation of these laws in the largest city of Pakistan, Karachi.A cross-sectional study was conducted in Karachi. The implementation of tobacco control laws in 'smoke-free' places, the adherence of tobacco companies to these laws, the regulation of cigarette sale, and the awareness and views of the general public regarding tobacco control laws were assessed via direct observation by visits and through self-administered questionnaires.The implementation of tobacco control laws in 'smoke-free' public places was found to be poor. Out of 37, only 23(62%) brands displayed pictorial warnings on their packs. 3(8%) of the brands were available in two different kinds of packs, both with and without pictorial warnings. Cigarette sale to minors was taking place at 80(85%) of the visited cigarette outlets. 50(53%) of the outlets displayed cigarette advertisements in the form of posters. 46(40%) of the persons questioned had awareness regarding the existence of ban on smoking in public places and 126(90%) of these were in favour of it.The implementation of tobacco control law in Pakistan is poor. Non adherence to the law in public places was alarmingly high. Also, the study demonstrates the poor compliance to the tobacco control laws by tobacco companies. The sale of cigarettes is almost unregulated.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Çukurovada yetiştirilen bazı kültür bitkilerinde (hıyar, pamuk, patlıcan ve soya) Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)nin Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) tarafından parazitlenme durumunun kafes denemeleri ile belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Denemeler, Çukurova Üniversitesi, ZiraatFakültesi, Bitki Koruma Bölümü Araştırma ve Uygulama arazisinde bulunan yarı kontrollü cam seralarda 2009 ve 2010 yıllarında yürütülmüştür. Denemeler tercihli ve tercihsiz olacak şekilde, 4 tekrarlı olarak tesadüf blokları deneme deseninde kurulmuştur. Tercihli testte, kafes içerisine hıyar, pamuk, patlıcan ve soya bitkilerinin her birinden birer adet yerleştirilmiştir. Tercihsiz testte ise kafes içerisine aynı bitkiden 4 adet yerleştirilmiştir. Bitkilerin 3. yaprağına, klips kafesler yardımıyla 40 adet ergin beyazsinek salınmıştır. Beyazsinek larvaları 2. ve 3. döneme geldiklerinde her kafese 12 adet ergin dişi parazitoid salınmıştır. Parazitoid salımından 10–12 gün sonra yapılan sayımlarla parazitli ve parazitli olmayan B. tabaci larvaları kaydedilmiştir. Tercihli testte en yüksek parazitlenme oranı % 53.4 ile hıyar bitkisinde elde edilmiş, bunu % 38.9 ve % 30.3 ile sırasıyla soya ve patlıcan bitkilerinde elde edilen oranlar izlemiştir. Tercihli testte en düşük parazitlenme oranı % 6.9 ile pamuk bitkisinden elde edilmiştir. Tercihsiz testte ise en yüksek parazitlenme oranı % 26.6 ile pamuk bitkisinde elde edilmiş, bunu % 21.9 ve % 18.5 ile hıyar ve soya bitkilerinde elde edilen değerler izlemiştir. Tercihsiz testte en düşük parazitlenme oranı % 9.5 ile patlıcan bitkisinde elde edilmiştir., The study was carried out in cage experiments in semi-controlled greenhouse at the Department of Plant Protection research area, Agricultural Faculty, Çukurova University, Turkey, during 2009-2010. It targeted determination of parasitism status of Eretmocerus mundus Mercet (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) on Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) infesting cucumber, cotton, eggplant and soybean crops. The experiments comprised choice and non-choice tests arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. In the choice test, four plants of different hosts were located in one cage. In the non-choice test four plants of one host were located in one cage. Forty whitefly adults were released on the 3rd true leaf by using clip cage. Twelve parasitoid females were released into the cages when the whitefly larvae reached the 2nd-3rd stages. After ten days from the release of the parasitoids, parasitized and non-parasitized whitefly larvae were recorded. In the choice test, the highest rate of parasitism 53.4% was found on cucumber, followed by 38.9% on soybean, and 30.3% on eggplant. The lowest rate of parasitism 6.9% was reported on cotton in the choice test. In the non-choice test, the highest rate of parasitism was found on cotton 26.6%, followed by 21.9% on cucumber and 18.5% on soybean. The lowest rate of parasitism was 9.5% reported on eggplant in the non-choice test.

Abstract

Mediastinal enteric cysts are a rare occurrence among adults and are usually asymptomatic. In most cases they are an incidental finding in the right hemi-mediastinum and are associated with vertebral anomalies. We report the unusual case of a 23 year old male who had a mediastinal mass on chest X-ray as an incidental finding. Chest Computed Tomography (CT) scan revealed no vertebral anomalies and a cystic mass in the left posterior mediastinum with features similar to those of a hydatid cyst.Posterolateral thoracotomy was done and the cyst was excised. Histopathology report revealed it to be an enteric cyst.

Abstract

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is categorised into two distinct types, AIP type 1 and 2. Although there can be multisystem involvement, rarely, the cholangitis associated with AIP can present radiologically in a manner similar to that of Klatskin tumour. We present the case of a 65-year-old man who was almost misdiagnosed with a Klatskin tumour because of the similarity in radiological features of the two aforementioned clinical entities. The patient presented with a history of jaundice, pruritus and abdominal pain, and work up showed deranged liver function tests, elevated cancer antigen 19-9 levels and positive antinuclear antibodies. CT scan of the abdomen showed findings suggestive of Klatskin tumour but due to diffuse enlargement of the pancreas and surrounding low-attenuation halo found on a closer review, a diagnosis of AIP was performed. The patient was started on standard corticosteroid therapy and responded well, with complete resolution of the radiological findings.

Abstract

Background Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant syndrome with a frequency of 1 in 25,000 live births and a penetrance of almost 100% by the sixth decade of life. The main tumors occurring in NF2 patients are bilateral vestibular schwannomas, other peripheral, cranial and spinal nerve schwannomas, intracranial and intraspinal meningiomas, ependymomas, and gliomas. Case description We report the case of a 6-year-old boy who presented with a 1-month history of nausea and recurrent vomiting. Physical examination was positive for ataxic gait and left-sided facial nerve palsy. Family history was positive for NF2 in the patient's father and paternal uncle. Magnetic resonance imaging brain revealed a solid enhancing lesion arising from the right cerebellar cortex, which was effacing the fourth ventricles and causing hydrocephalus. Craniotomy and excision of the lesion were performed. Histopathology report confirmed the diagnosis to be desmoplastic medulloblastoma. Based on the patients' subsequent history and family history, he was diagnosed to be a case of NF2. Conclusion This is the first case of medulloblastoma occurring in a patient with NF2 and raises the possibility of an association between medulloblastoma and NF2.
