The fifth edition of the CheckThat! Lab is held as part of the 2022 Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting various factuality tasks in seven languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Spanish, and Turkish. Task1 focuses on disinformation related to the ongoing COVID-19 infodemic and politics, and asks to predict whether a tweet is worth fact-checking, contains a verifiable factual claim, is harmful to the society, or is of interest to policy makers and why. Task2 asks to retrieve claims that have been previously fact-checked and that could be useful to verify the claim in a tweet. Task3 is to predict the veracity of a news article. Tasks1 and 3 are classification problems, while Task2 is a ranking one.

We describe the fifth edition of the CheckThat! lab, part of the 2022 Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting tasks related to factuality in multiple languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Spanish, and Turkish. Task 1 asks to identify relevant claims in tweets in terms of check-worthiness, verifiability, harmfullness, and attention-worthiness. Task 2 asks to detect previously fact-checked claims that could be relevant to fact-check a new claim. It targets both tweets and political debates/speeches. Task 3 asks to predict the veracity of the main claim in a news article. CheckThat! was the most popular lab at CLEF-2022 in terms of team registrations: 137 teams. More than one-third (37%) of them actually participated: 18, 7, and 26 teams submitted 210, 37, and 126 official runs for tasks 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

The emergence of ultra-fast X-ray free-electron lasers opens the possibility of imaging single molecules in the gas phase at atomic resolution. The main disadvantage of this imaging technique is the unknown orientation of the sample exposed to the X-ray beam, making the three dimensional reconstruction not trivial. Induced orientation of molecules prior to X-ray exposure can be highly beneficial, as it significantly reduces the number of collected diffraction patterns whilst improving the quality of the reconstructed structure. We present here the possibility of protein orientation using a time-dependent external electric field. We used ab initio simulations on Trp-cage protein to provide a qualitative estimation of the field strength required to break protein bonds, with 45 V/nm as a breaking point value. Furthermore, we simulated, in a classical molecular dynamics approach, the orientation of ubiquitin protein by exposing it to different time-dependent electric fields. The protein structure was preserved for all samples at the moment orientation was achieved, which we denote `orientation before destruction'. Moreover, we find that the minimal field strength required to induce orientation within ten ns of electric field exposure, was of the order of 0.5 V/nm. Information Retrieval (IR) is often confronted with different and heterogeneous collections of multilingual and multimedial content. Transformations are necessary in order to map between different representation schemes which are the result of different content analysis methods and different terminologies. Vague methods which have been sucessfully applied to IR seem especially suited to tackle the vague nature of such transformations. Statistical methods are reviewed and two experimental systems based on neural networks are presented.

Der Beitrag stellt den Prototypen eines integrierten Informationssystemes vor, das Daten verschiedener Typen (Modalitäten) enthält. Das zugrundeliegende Modell entstand aus empirischen Untersuchungen für Texte und Fakten, eignet sich aufgrund der gewählten Abstraktionsstufe jedoch auch für andere Datentypen wie z.B. Grafiken oder Internet-Seiten. Als Anwendungsfall dient das Elektronische Verbandsinformations-, Recherche- und Analysesystem ELVIRA.

Dieser Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die Möglichkeiten und Chancen der Bewertung der Popularität von Internet-Angeboten durch die Analyse der Verlinkungsstruktur. Insbesondere die auf eine Seite verweisenden Hypertext-Verbindungen werden immer häufiger als wichtiger Maßstab für die Autorität und sogar die Qualität von Seiten herangezogen. Eine Methode für die Adap-tion dieses seiten-orientierten Maßes für komplexere Internet-Angebote wird vorgestellt. Als Untersuchungsbeispiele wurden exemplarisch deutschspra-chige Web-Verzeichnisdienste gewählt. Dabei konnte u.a. gezeigt werden, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit für Hypertext-Verbindungen auf Verzeichnis-dienste mit zunehmender hierarchischer Tiefe der Seiten extrem stark ab-nimmt und dass die Anzahl der Links auf eine Seite eines Verzeichnisdienstes nicht mit der Anzahl der Links auf die dort genannten Seiten konform geht.

Visualisierung gilt als eine wichtige Technik, um Benutzern von Infor-mationssystemen die Interaktion mit großen und komplexen Datenmengen zu erleichtern. Insbesondere niedrigdimensionale Dokumentkarten gewannen nicht zuletzt durch erfolgreiche Implementierungen im Internet an Bedeutung. Diese Karten gruppieren hochdimensionale Ausgangsdaten wie beispiels-weise Textdokumente auf einer zweidimensionalen Fläche oder in einem drei-dimensionalen Raum, wobei die Abstände zwischen den Dokumenten seman-tische Ähnlichkeit ausdrücken. Das virtuelle Bibliotheksregal MyShelf soll den Browsing-Zugang zu hetero-gen repräsentierten Objekten erleichtern. Anwendungsfall sind die informati-onswissenschaftlichen Literaturbestände an der Universitätsbibliothek Hil-desheim. MyShelf zielt darauf ab, die relevanten Bibliotheksbestände, Bestän-de anderer Bibliotheken, von Dozenten erstellte Lehrmaterialien und Quellen aus dem Internet zu integrieren. Der Zugang umfasst mehrere hierarchische Ordnungssystematiken, wobei vor allem bestehende reale Bibliothekssyste-matiken integriert werden. Die Systematik soll vom Benutzer ausgewählt werden können, woraufhin sich die Bücher nach der gewählten Systematik neu anordnen. Dazu müssen semantische Transferrelationen zwischen den Objekten oder Systematiken definiert werden. Der Beitrag berichtet über die konkreten Schritte zur Erstellung dieses Systems.

The amount of data on the internet continues to grow. At the same time, fund-ing for professional information work for collection building, quality assess-ment and content representation is reduced. The Layer Model responds to these challenges associated with the internet. The Layer Model shows how information providers can restrict the information work dedicated to content representation to small collections and, at the same time, allows users to ac-cess much larger collections. Transfer modules apply intellectual information work to documents outside a core. This article shows how the Layer Model can be extended in order to integrate automatic quality assessment and auto-mated collection building.

Innerhalb der informationswissenschaftlich geprägten Fachinformation nimmt die Patentdomäne eine gewisse Sonderstellung ein, da sie über eine Reihe von Besonderheiten verfügt, die es notwendig machen, die klassischen Methoden der Bewertung zu überarbeiten bzw. zu adaptieren. Dies belegen unter anderem die Ergebnisse des Intellectual Property Track, der seit 2009 im Rahmen der Evaluierungskampagne CLEF (Cross-Language Evaluation Forum) stattfindet. Der vorliegende Artikel beschreibt die innerhalb des zuvor genannten Track erzielten Ergebnisse. Darüber hinaus werden die Konsequenzen für die Evaluierung von Patent- Retrieval-Systemen herausgearbeitet.

Die Eignung von Prototyping-Werkzeugen zur Erstellung interaktiver Prototypen hängt stark vom Anwendungsfall ab. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Evaluierung von Prototyping-Werkzeugen für einen spezifischen Anwendungsfall. Dazu wurde ein Kriterienkatalog entwickelt, der auf Basis der Anforderungen bei IBM Interactive Hamburg gewichtet wurde. In einem Benchmark wurden 27 Systeme auf 20 Kriterien hin bewertet. Fünf Systeme wurden in einer heuristischen Analyse intensiver auf ihre Usability hin untersucht. Die zwei am besten geeigneten Systeme wurden in einem abschließenden Benutzertest mit der derzeitigen Lösung verglichen.

Dieser Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie Sitelinks, das sind Links zu Unterseiten von Suchmaschinentreffern, von Nutzern bei Navigationsanfragen genutzt und bewertet werden. Die Ergebnisse eines Benutzertests zeigen ein uneinheitliches Bild. Einerseits deutet sich an, dass die Nutzung von Sitelinks die Dauer der Informationssuche signifikant verringern kann. Auf der anderen Seite werden Sitelinks oftmals nicht verwendet bzw. kaum bewusst wahrgenommen. Insofern bleibt fraglich, inwieweit sie ein sinnvoller Bestandteil der Darstellung von Suchergebnissen sind, da sie den knappen Raum zur Anzeige von weiteren Treffern auf den Ergebnisseiten von Suchmaschinen verringern.

Anfragen an Information Retrieval Systeme beinhalten häufig geographischen Einschränkungen. Solche geographischen Angaben wie Städte- oder Ländernamen ermöglichen Suchmaschinen die Optimierung ihrer Ergebnisse jenseits von klassischen Indexierungstechniken. Beispielsweise lassen sich geographische Entitäten in Ontologien einordnen und liefern somit gute Hinweise für Erweiterungsterme. Dieser Beitrag stellt den Stand der Forschung dar, analysiert aktuelle Evaluierungsergebnisse und leitet daraus Optimierungsansätze für die Systementwicklung ab. Experimente und deren Auswertung zeigen, dass flexible Anwendungen von Relevanz Feedback zu verbesserten Ergebnisse führen können.

Cultural research is dedicated to understanding the processes of knowledge dissemination and the social and technological practices in the book industry. Research on children books in the 19th century can be supported by computer systems. Specifically, the advances in digital image processing seem to offer great opportunities for analyzing and quantifying the visual components in the books. The production technology for illustrations in books in the 19th century was characterized by a shift from wood or copper engraving to lithography. We report classification experiments which intend to classify images based on the production technology. For a classification task that is also difficult for humans, the classification quality reaches only around 70%. Nowadays social network sites are present in all parts of our daily life. Nevertheless there are a lot of people who do not use them. What reasons do non-users have for their abstinence of social network sites? To answer this question six semi-structured interviews with German non-users were conducted. A qualitative analysis of the data shows that there are two main relevant aspects. Firstly, their general life situation, and secondly, different reasons for the abstinence of social network sites need to be considered. Two of these reasons which we identified have not been revealed in previous research. The concept of friendship and the communication style in social network sites as e.g. users who show a distorted presentation of themselves to show off were strong motives for abstinence.

This study examines the perception on third-party tracking of German Internet users. For that purpose, 20 users without a technical background were interviewed. Results indicate that users are not aware of online tracking. They are often surprised by the magnitude of tracking programs they are exposed to during everyday life online activities like travel planning, job or product research. While the interviewees were willing to concede the theoretical advantages of such data collection, e.g. for behavioral targeting, they considered the price as too high to compensate for the loss of privacy control. The participants showed concerns that tracking could possibly lead to disadvantages in real life. In addition, behavioral targeting is assessed fairly redundant. Asked about concepts for enhanced transparency and control, the interviewed people still emphasized their distrust toward tracking. Thus, third-party tracking is a doubled edged sword for online advertising. On the one hand, it is a central means to improve the relevancy of the often unwanted display ads. At the same time, there is a great danger of increasing ad aversion for privacy reasons.

The following study analyses the effects of Auto-Suggest as implemented on mobile Websites on user’s search in m-commerce-shops. A benchmark showed that many design guidelines regarding the implementation of Auto- Suggest have been fulfilled. For usability tests, different designs of Auto- Suggest have been systematically selected. The results showed that the Auto- Suggest function guarantees a faster interaction with the website for most of the tasks on average. For tasks which require more time, the additional interaction time is around 10% and, surprisingly, does not result from more interaction steps. Many qualitative findings explain how interacting with Auto- Suggest can be troublesome for users.

The first step to handle semantic heterogeneity should be the attempt to enrich the semantic information about documents, i.e. to fill up the gaps in the documents meta-data automatically. Section 2 describes a set of cascading deductive and heuristic extraction rules, which were developed in the project CARMEN for the domain of Social Sciences. The mapping between different terminologies can be done by using intellectual, statistical and/or neural network transfer modules. This overview paper is devoted to a critical assessment of GikiCLEF 2009, an evaluation contest specifically designed to expose and investigate cultural and linguistic issues inWikipedia search, with eight participant systems and 17 runs. After providing a maximally short but self contained overview of the GikiCLEF task and participation, we present the open source SIGA system, and discuss, for each of the main guiding ideas, the resulting successes or shortcomings, concluding with further work and still unanswered questions.

The CLEF NewsREEL challenge allows researchers to evaluate news\ud recommendation algorithms both online (NewsREEL Live) and offline (News-\ud REEL Replay). Compared with the previous year NewsREEL challenged participants\ud with a higher volume of messages and new news portals. In the 2017\ud edition of the CLEF NewsREEL challenge a wide variety of new approaches have\ud been implemented ranging from the use of existing machine learning frameworks,\ud to ensemble methods to the use of deep neural networks. This paper gives an\ud overview over the implemented approaches and discusses the evaluation results.\ud In addition, the main results of Living Lab and the Replay task are explained.
