The accumulation of microplastics in marine organisms is an emerging concern. Due to trophic transfer, the safety of seafood is under investigation in view of the potential negative effects of microplastics on human health. In this study, market samples of Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) from South Korea were segregated into two groups of considerably different size (p0.05). Particle diameters of 20–100μm was the most dominant, accounting for 44.6 % and 46.5 % of all microplastics from the small and large groups, respectively. Particles, with a circularity (resemblance to a circle) value between 0.6 and 1.0, were the most prevalent, fol- lowed by fragments and fibers. At least 50 % of microplastics from the small and large samples were polystyrene, making it the most abundant polymer type. Despite the substantial difference in the size of the animals, only a weak to moderate correlation was observed between microplastics content and the physical attributes of the clams such as shell length and weight, (soft) tissue weight, and total weight (Spearman's coefficient&nbsp

Vibrio europaeus is an emergent pathogen affecting clams, oysters and scallops produced in the most important countries for bivalve aquaculture. Studies concerning virulence factors involved in the virulence of V. europaeus are very scarce despite its global significance for aquaculture. Zinc-metalloproteases have been described as a major virulence factor in some Vibrio spp., although their contribution and role in the virulence of V. europaeus is not clear. To address this, we have studied an extracellular zinc-metalloprotease (VemA) encoded by V. europaeus, which was identified as a vibriolysin, highly conserved in this species and homologous in other pathogenic and non-pathogenic species. Virulence challenge experiments demonstrated that infection processes were faster when Manila clam larvae and juveniles were infected with the wildtype rather than with a mutant defective in the vemA gene (ΔvemA). V. europaeus was able to resist the bactericidal action of mucus and displayed a chemotaxis ability favoured by VemA to colonize the body mucus of clams and form a biofilm. The overall results suggest that VemA, although it is not a major virulence factor, plays a role in the colonization of the Manila clam mucus, and thus boosts the infection process as we observed in virulence challenge experiments.

The increasing global consumption of seafood has led to increased trade among nations, accompanied by mislabeling and fraudulent practices that have rendered authentication crucial. The multi-isotope ratio analysis is considered as applicable tool for evaluating geographical authentications but requires information and experience to select target elements such as isotopes, through a distinction method based on differences in habitat and physiology due to origin. The present study examined recombination conditions of multi-elements that facilitated geographically distinct classifications of the clams to sort out appropriate elements. Briefly, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) analysis was performed according to several combinations of five stable isotopes (carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N), oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δD), and sulfur (δ34S)) and two radiogenic elements (strontium (87Sr/86Sr) and neodymium (143Nd/144Nd)), and the geographical classification results of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea), Korea and China were compared. In conclusion, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with at least four elements (C, N, O, and S) including S revealed a remarkable cluster distribution of the clams. These findings expanded the application of systematic multi-elements analyses, including stable and radiogenic isotopes, to trace the origins of R. philippinarum collected from the Korea, China, and DPR Korea.

Elemental (CHN) and proximate biochemical compositions of body tissues are useful tools among the ecological indices most commonly used in evaluation of the energetic status of animal populations. Gnaiger and Bitterlich (1984) supplied procedures for the interconversion between both these measurements based on stoichiometric relationships, that were further tested using gut contents and body tissue samples of freshwater fishes. Despite a lack of validation studies, the reported conversion factors have been broadly applied in the field of body composition analysis of marine invertebrates, especially bivalve mollusks. The aim of this study was to test the applicability of those conversion equivalents in analysis of the body tissues of two congeneric clam species (Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum). To this end, proximate biochemical composition, as analyzed by fractionated extraction of tissues samples and quantification using spectrophotometric methods, was converted to elemental composition, and the resulting figures were compared with those of direct CHN analysis. The results of this comparison indicate good agreement within the ranges reported, provided that ninhydrin positive substances (NPS) are incorporated in the biochemical composition analyses. The magnitude of the nonprotein N component in bivalve tissues appears to complicate the reverse computation of biochemical components from elemental composition because no accurate estimation of proteins from N contents might be possible. Additionally, a specific correction of residual water in dried samples of bivalve tissues for CHN analysis should be applied. The absence of broad differences found between species reflects the morphological, evolutionary and functional proximity between them, whereas tissue differences display the differential role that each organ plays in the organism, although other sources of variability such as diet and sex should be addressed in future research. Life cycle stages, including daughter sporocysts, cercariae, and metacercariae, of Parvatrema duboisi (Dollfus, 1923) Bartoli, 1974 (Digenea: Gymnophallidae) have been found in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Aphaedo (Island), Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea. The daughter sporocysts were elongated sac-like and 307-570 (av. 395) μm long and 101-213 (av. 157) μm wide. Most of the daughter sporocysts contained 15-20 furcocercous cercariae each. The cercariae measured 112-146 (av. 134) μm in total length and 35-46 (av. 40) μm in width, with 69-92 (av. 85) μm long body and 39-54 (av. 49) μm long tail. The metacercariae were 210-250 (av. 231) μm in length and 170-195 (av. 185) μm in width, and characterized by having a large oral sucker, genital pore some distance anterior to the ventral sucker, no ventral pit, and 1 compact or slightly lobed vitellarium, strongly suggesting P. duboisi. The metacercariae were experimentally infected to ICR mice, and adults were recovered at day 7 post-infection. The adult flukes were morphologically similar to the metacercariae except in the presence of up to 20 eggs in the uterus. The daughter sporocysts and metacercariae were molecularly (ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2) analyzed to confirm the species, and the results showed 99.8-99.9% identity with P. duboisi reported from Kyushu, Japan and Gochang, Korea. These results confirmed the presence of various life cycle stages of P. duboisi in the Manila clam, R. philippinarum, playing the role of the first as well as the second intermediate host, on Aphae-do (Island), Shinan-gun, Korea.

The mitochondrial F1FO-ATPase, the key enzyme in cell bioenergetics, apparently works in the same way in mollusks and in mammals. We previously pointed out a raft-like arrangement in mussel gill mitochondrial membranes, which apparently distinguishes bivalve mollusks from mammals. To explore the relationship between the microenvironmental features and the enzyme activity, the physico-chemical features of mitochondrial membranes and the F1FO-ATPase activity temperature-dependence are here explored in the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum). Similarly to the mussel, clam gill mitochondrial membrane lipids exhibit a high sterol content (42 mg/g protein), mainly due to phytosterols (cholesterol only attains 42% of total sterols), and abundant polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (70% of total fatty acids), especially of the n-3 family. However, the F1FO–ATPase activation energies above and below the break in the Arrhenius plot (22.1 °C) are lower than in mussel and mammalian mitochondria. Laurdan fluorescence spectroscopy analyses carried out at 10 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C on mitochondrial membranes and on lipid vesicles obtained from total lipid extracts of mitochondria, indicate a physical state without coexisting domains. This mitochondrial membrane constitution, allowed by lipid-lipid and lipidprotein interactions and involving PUFA-rich phospholipids, phytosterols (much more diversified in clams than in mussels) and proteins, enables the maintenance of a homogeneous physical state in the range 10–30 °C. Consistently, this molecular interaction network would somehow extend the temperature range of the F1FO–ATPase activity and may contribute to clam resilience to temperature changes.

Background Perkinsosis is a major disease affecting the commercially important marine mollusk Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila clam) in Asian waters. In this study, we investigated the morphological characteristics of Perkinsus olseni, the causative agent of perkinsosis, cultured under laboratory conditions at different stages of its life cycle using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results The prezoosporangia formed after induction with Ray’s fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM) developed into zoosporangia. During this process, a discharge tube formed a porous sponge-like structure that detached before the zoospores were released; thus, this organelle operated as a bung. Liberated zoospores gradually transformed into immature trophozoites, during which detachment of the anterior flagella occurred, but the loss of the posterior flagella was not clearly observed in the present study. Mature trophozoites underwent schizogony by cleaving the cell forming some merozoites in schizonts, which were released by the rupturing of the cellular membrane of the schizont within a few days. Conclusions Our morphological and ultrastructural studies contribute new information on the life cycle and propagation of P. olseni.

Despite their ecological and economical relevance, a lack of data is still occurring about the distribution, abundance, bioaccumulation and risks for consumption of some edible bivalves. The present study has been carried out in the Venice Lagoon taking into account three bivalve species to investigate i) the possible relationship among the biological features-distribution, abundance and bioaccumulation patterns- of razor clams (Solen marginatus Pulteney, 1799), Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum Adams and Reeve, 1850) and lagoon cockles (Cerastoderma glaucum Poiret, 1789) and the hydrological features, namely sediment physico-chemical characteristics and contamination; ii) their specific role as bioindicators of inorganic contamination; iii) the possible risks for human health associated with the consumption of these edible bivalves. Results showed that species distribution and abundance, especially for razor clams, was mainly influenced by environmental conditions and sediment granulometric composition, above metal(loid) contamination. The contamination patterns were different among species, as Manila clam generally showed higher bioaccumulation values for most of the metal(loid)s, whilst lagoon cockles preferentially accumulated Ni. Eventually, a serious concern exists for the human consumption, for all species and investigated sites regarding As. This study will raise attention on the effects of bioaccumulation of inorganic pollutants by edible bivalves and risks for consumers' safety, especially concerning razor clams and cockles, for which a critical lack of data on metal(loid) bioaccumulation occurs from the Northern Adriatic Sea.

The PCR analysis was performed on DNA samples extracted from a total of 20 individuals using six oligonucleotides primers. The author accomplished clustering analyses to reveal the Euclidean genetic distances among four clam populations from Gochang, Seocheon, Taean and Anmyeon of the Korean peninsula. The oligonucleotides primer OPA-08 generated 5 unique loci to each population, approximately 550 bp and 600 bp, respectively, in the MCS population. Especially, the primer OPA-20 generated 15 unique loci to each population, which were identifying each population, approximately 400 bp, 750 bp and 800 bp, in the MCT population. Gymnophallid metacercariae found in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (‘Banjirak’ in Korean) from Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were morphologically and molecularly confirmed to be Parvatrema duboisi (Dollfus, 1923) Bartoli, 1974. The metacercariae were morphologically characterized by having a large oral sucker, small ventral sucker, genital pore some distance anterior to the ventral sucker, no ventral pit, and 1 compact or slightly lobed vitellarium, which were all compatible with P. duboisi. Some of the metacercariae were experimentally fed to mice, and adult flukes were recovered at day 7 post-infection. The morphology of the adult flukes was basically the same as that of the metacercariae except for the presence of uterine eggs; the uterus was filled with up to 40 eggs. The nucleotide sequences (1,193 bp) from ITS regions (ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS2) of the metacercariae showed 99.7% identity with P. duboisi and 75.7% identity with Gymnophalloides seoi deposited in GenBank. These results confirmed the presence of P. duboisi metacercariae in the Manila clam R. philippinarum in an estuary region of Gochang-gun, Korea.

The Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), an invasive species in Northern Europe, can be used as a bioindicator of metal pollution. Seasonal effects on metallothionein (MT) production have not been considered in this species at the northernmost extent of its European distribution. This study assesses the annual seasonal effects on MT and metal concentrations in R. philippinarum from Poole Harbour, UK. R. philippinarum were collected in winter, spring, summer, and autumn throughout 2015, and MT and metal concentrations, as well as biotic and abiotic variables, were quantified. During winter, linear regression analysis showed significant positive relationships between tissue metal and MT concentrations. However, during spring and summer, these relationships were mostly insignificant. MT concentrations during spring had significant positive relationships with tissue and whole weight. Significant positive relationships were also observed between MT and condition index, during summer. During spring and summer, biotic factors seem to override the role of MT as a detoxification mechanism for metal exposure in this species. This is probably due to an increase in MT concentration in spring caused by gametogenesis, associated with increased tissue weight as the gonads expand. A depletion of energy resources, or physical stressors such as heat, may be attributed to the reduced MT production in clams of poor body condition in summer. The evidence from this study suggests that MT may only be a useful biomarker of metal pollution during winter in R. philippinarum in the UK. This verifies the natural variability of MT in this species at high latitudes, and highlights the potential and limits to a widely available bioindicator of metal pollution.

Chronic exposure to environmental pollutants can exert strong selective pressures on natural populations, favoring the transmission over generations of traits that enable individuals to survive and thrive in highly impacted environments. The lagoon of Venice is an ecosystem subject to heavy anthropogenic impact, mainly due to the industrial activities of Porto Marghera (PM), which led to a severe chemical contamination of soil, groundwater, and sediments. Gene expression analysis on wild Manila clams collected in different Venice lagoon areas enabled to identify differences in gene expression profiles between clams collected in PM and those sampled in clean areas, and the definition of molecular signatures of chemical stress. However, it remains largely unexplored to which extent modifications of gene expression patterns persists after removing the source of contamination. It is also relatively unknown whether chronic exposure to xenobiotics affects the response to other chemical pollutants. To start exploring such issues, in the present study a common-garden experiment was coupled with transcriptomic analysis, to compare gene expression profiles of PM clams with those of clams collected in the less impacted area of Chioggia (CH) during a period under the same control conditions. Part of the two experimental groups were also exposed to copper for seven days to assess whether different "ecological history" does influence response to such pollutant. The results obtained suggest that the chronic exposure to chemical pollution generated a response at the transcriptional level that persists after removal for the contaminated site. These transcriptional changes are centered on key biological processes, such as defense against either oxidative stress or tissue/protein damage, and detoxification, suggesting an adaptive strategy for surviving in the deeply impacted environment of Porto Marghera. On the other hand, CH clams appeared to respond more effectively to copper exposure than PM animals, proposing that chronic exposure to chemical toxicants either lowers the sensitivity to additional toxicants or blunts the capacity to respond to novel chemical challenges in PM clams.

Vibrio tapetis, the etiological agent of Brown Ring Disease, mainly affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Although this bacterium is mainly known as a clam pathogen, it has been isolated from several fish species. The main aim of the present study was to further explore the variability of 27 V. tapetis isolates from bivalves and fish, considering three different aspects; in vitro virulence based on the loss of clam hemocyte adhesion properties, detection of the gene virB4 encoding for an essential component of the Type IV Secretion System, and MALDI-TOF MS characterization based on whole cell extracts. Finally, these approaches were compared and evaluated for their ability to differentiate the potential pathogenicity of the 27 isolates against the Manila clams. Among the 11 V. tapetis isolates from the common dab isolated in 2018 in Belgium, only one (2BB) showed intermediate in vitro virulence against the Manila clam, and seven carried the virB4 gene while none of the V. tapetis previously isolated from fish in 2003 showed the presence of this particular gene. Finally, the peak protein profiles generated with MALDI-TOF MS analysis from all 27 V. tapetis strains showed a clear clustering of clam pathogenic and nonpathogenic isolates suggesting that a new isolate of V. tapetis that would cluster within the clam pathogenic isolates could be potentially pathogenic to the Manila clam. Thereupon, MALDI-TOF MS typing allows rapid and cost-efficient identification of V. tapetis isolates and can be defined as a complementary method of the traditional qPCR that opens new perspectives to study the virulence of V. tapetis isolates but also to perform environmental monitoring in order to prevent outbreaks.

We investigated the biological impact of extensive Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) aquaculture on macrobenthic communities in a tidal ecosystem in Korea. We collected macrobenthos (&gt, 1 mm in length) samples seasonally in the intertidal zone in Geunsoman, Taean, Korea from April 2011 to December 2014. We identified 146 macrobenthos species, including 60 polychaetes, 53 crustaceans, and 16 mollusks. A biota&ndash, environment matching (BIO&ndash, ENV) analysis indicated that the benthic community was affected by mean sediment grain size (Mz), total organic carbon (TOC), and R. philippinarum biomass. We found no correlation between R. philippinarum and the main dominant species (Heteromastus filiformis, Ceratonereis erythraeensis, and Ampharete arctica), which have a different feeding strategy, thus, this may result in a lack of competition for food resources. In addition, we found that flourishing R. philippinarum positively affects the macrobenthos density but negatively affects the biodiversity index. Moreover, competition between species does not occur clearly, and environmental variables (sediment, organic carbon) are important.

SummaryGerm plasm-related structures (GPRS) are known to accompany meiotic cell differentiation but their dynamics are still poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the ultrastructural mechanisms of GPRS transformation during oogenesis and spermatogenesis of the bivalve molluscRuditapes philippinarum(Manila clam), exploring patterns of GPRS activity occurring at meiosis onset, sex-specific difference/similarity of such patterns, and the involvement of mitochondria during GPRS-assigned events. In the two sexes, the zygotene–pachytene stage of meiosis is anticipated by three shared steps. First, the dispersion of germ plasm granules containing the germ line determinant VASA occurs. Second, the VASA protein deriving from germ plasm granules enters neighbouring mitochondria and appears to induce mitochondrial matter release, as supported by cytochrome B localization outside the mitochondria. Third, intranuclear VASA entrance occurs and the protein appears involved in chromatin reorganization, as supported by VASA localization in synaptonemal complexes. In spermatogenesis, these three steps are sufficient for the normal course of meiosis. In oogenesis, these are followed by the action of ‘germ plasm granule formation complex’, a novel type of structure that appears alternative to the Balbiani body. The possibility of germ plasm involvement in reproductive technologies is also suggested.

International audience; Severe drop in Manila clams production in French aquacultured fields since the end of the 1980's is associated to Brown Ring Disease (BRD). This disease, caused by the bacteria Vibrio tapetis, is characterized by specific symptoms on the inner face of the shell. Diseased animals develop conchiolin deposit to enrobe bacteria and form new calcified layers on the shell. Suppression subtractive hybridization was performed to identify genes differentially expressed during the early interaction of V. tapetis and Ruditapes philippinarum. Results revealed 301 unique genes differentially expressed during V. tapetis challenge. Several candidates involved in immune and biomineralization processes were selected from libraries. Transcriptional expression of selected candidates was determined in hemolymph and mantle tissues and revealed spatial and temporal variations. At 56days after infection, when clams were in phase of shell repair, transcripts of galectin and ferritin in hemocytes showed higher expression. Ca-like and serpin transcripts were specifically expressed in mantle and could contribute to defense against BRD.

The Marano and Grado lagoon, one of the largest wetlands in the Mediterranean Sea, has been subject to mercury contamination by industrial and mining activities. This must be considered a severe threat for Manila clam harvesting, which is an important fishing and commercial activity in the area. Contamination levels and potential risk for human consumption both in reared and wild clams collected from the lagoon were assessed by analyzing total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) contents. In addition, relationships between THg and MeHg in sediments and in the bivalves were investigated. Increased bioaccumulation of THg but not of MeHg with increasing size of wild clam populations was observed at most sites. Higher concentrations both of THg (605 ± 210 ng g −1 ww) and MeHg (147 ± 37 ng g −1 ww) were detected in the eastern lagoon where the highest THg contents in sediments were observed as a consequence of the long-term supply of cinnabar rich suspended material from the Isonzo river. The variation of Hg content in seeded Manila clams during growth was monitored over a period of 18 months at two sites of the western sector of the lagoon. Results showed that the two areas were suitable for clam farming, with THg levels in reared bivalves always lower than the 0.5 mg kg −1 ww European Community limit. At the same time, as clams grew bigger in size, their THg and MeHg concentrations decreased, becoming lower than in the starting seeded pool. Reared clams presented lower THg (84 ± 55 ng g −1 ww) and MeHg (44.1 ± 24.6 ng g −1 ww) content than wild clams of the same commercial size (>30 mm). Based on a precautionary approach, intake of Hg and MeHg with the estimated clam consumption does not seem to constitute a risk for human health in the studied area.

Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum represents an important economic resource of Italian aquaculture. However, especially for Venice lagoon, health and environmental risks should be evaluated. A multidisciplinary approach was used. In particular, local production chain analysis and end-user requirements were investigated to assess manila clam safety and traceability in Northern Adriatic Sea. Moreover, the molecular and biochemical techniques demonstrated a good quality of the investigated farming sites, due to the absence of biotoxins. Molecular markers provided informations on the population genetics and specific genetic traits of Ruditapes philippinarum in Northern Adriatic Sea, which was investigated for the first time. The complexity of all these informations was simplified in a single useful tool: a database containing all the informations about the seafood product.

International audience; A field monitoring of hemocyte parameters of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was conducted from July 2004 to September 2005 in Gulf of Morbihan (France), in order to assess (1) the factors controlling the hemocyte parameters of the Manila clam and (2) their relative contribution to the overall variability of these parameters. Monthly, sixty clams were sampled and total hemocyte count (THC), granulocyte and hyalinocyte counts, phagocytosis, phenoloxidase specific activity, length, flesh dry weight, and condition index were measured individually. Perkinsus sp. infection and Brown Ring Disease symptoms were also monitored. Temperature and trophic resource were also monitored. Results indicate that temperature controls granulocyte counts and subsequently THC. Other environmental factors had no direct influence on the measured hemocyte parameters. Almost all measured parameters were significantly affected by size/age and condition index. There were poor relationships between both pathologies and hemocyte parameters presumably because of low infection intensities. Nevertheless, high Perkinsus sp. infection intensity significantly increased total and granulocyte counts and decreased phagocytosis. An interesting result of this study is that the measured biotic and abiotic factors poorly contribute to the explanation of the total variability of hemocyte parameters. Granulocyte concentration was the best explained parameter. However, only 16.4% of its variance was explained by cumulating temperature, length, condition index and Perkinsus sp. infection effects. This study emphasizes the need for a better understanding of hemocyte functions and the factors modulating these functions.

The time series of landings in the Venice Lagoon from 1945 to 2001 were analysed with the aim of explaining the ecosystem changes occurred. The comparative analysis of the total landings and mean Trophic Level (mTL) time series allowed to identify four different stages in the lagoon ecosystem. The first period, from 1945 to 1973, was characterised by increasing trends in the landings and their mTL. The second one, from 1974 to 1989, showed a decrease in the landings but still an increase in the mTL. The third period, from 1990 to 1998, had again a positive trend in the landings, but the mTL showed a sharp decline. After 1998, a slight decreasing trend in both mTL and landings was observed: the analyses of the artisanal fishery landings only date back to 1995 this effect. The presence of four distinct periods was also confirmed by the analysis of the trends of other indices estimated using landings data: the Fishing in Balance index (FiB), the Trophic Efficiency (TE) and the Pelagic on Demersal landings ratio (P/D). In the first period, the increasing fishing pressure, along with no evidence of ecosystem crisis, suggested that an increased nutrient discharge was supporting it; analogously, the bottom-up effects had driven the dynamics of the ecosystem also in the second period, when the decrease in nutrient loads caused a shift of the primary producers from planktonic to macrobenthic. The spreading of the Manila clam, a non-native species, and the development of its massive mechanical exploitation have been the main forces driving the ecosystem during the third period, for which, however, no signs of crises were detected. The fourth period showed evidence of the “fishing down the food web” effect. Possible causes of such an effect were investigated and allowed us to conclude that not overfishing, but the effects of mechanical harvesting of the Manila clam had caused relevant impacts on habitat and benthic communities, concluding that the present level of exploitation of the stock of Manila clam is not sustainable in the long term. Our findings were also compared with the general evolution of enclosed seas, subjected to high nutrient loads, fishing pressure and invasion by non-native species.

Although pharmaceuticals have been detected in the environment only in the range from ng/L to μg/L, it has been demonstrated that they can adversely affect the health status of aquatic organisms. Lysosomal membrane stability (LMS) has previously been applied as an indicator of cellular well-being to determine health status in bivalve mussels. The objective of this study is to evaluate LMS in Ruditapes philippinarum haemolymph using the neutral red retention assay (NRRA). Clams were exposed in laboratory conditions to caffeine (0.1, 5, 15, 50 μg/L), ibuprofen (0.1, 5, 10, 50 μg/L), carbamazepine and novobiocin (both at 0.1, 1, 10, 50 μg/L) for 35 days. Results show a dose-dependent effect of the pharmaceuticals. The neutral red retention time measured at the end of the bioassay was significantly reduced by 50% after exposure to environmental concentrations (. p < 0.05) (caffeine = 15 μg/L; ibuprofen = 10 μg/L; carbamazepine = 1 μg/L and novobiocin = 1 μg/L), compared to controls. Clams exposed to these pharmaceuticals were considered to present a diminished health status (retention time < 45 min), significantly worse than controls (96 min) (. p < 0.05). The predicted no environmental effect concentration (PNEC) results showed that these pharmaceuticals are very toxic at the environmental concentrations tested. Measurement of the alteration of LMS has been found to be a sensitive technique that enables evaluation of the health status of clams after exposure to pharmaceuticals under laboratory conditions, thus representing a robust Tier-1 screening biomarker. © 2013 The Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A bibliography of over 1,400 papers on reproduction, recruitment, genetic, pathology, basic biology, and the geographic distribution of the Manila clam Tapes philippinarum is compiled to provide a guide to scientists. This review aims to facilitate access and diffusion of scientific works carried out on this species to the international scientific community concerned by Tapes philippinarum. The bibliography includes publications as well as grey literature published around the world since the early century. Moreover, the large synonymy of Tapes philippinarum and the species geographic distribution are reviewed and updated. The species importance is assessed through public fishery landings and aquaculture production per country. The D'v'eral1 worldwide production reached a total of 632,925 metric tons in 1994 with 90% from aquaculture, and mainly from China., Une synthèse bibliographique contenant plus de 1 400 références concernant la reproduction, le recrutement, la génétique, la pathologie et la biologie de la palourde japonaise Tapes philippinarum fait l'objet d'une compilation afin de servir de guide à la recherche. Cette synthèse a pour objectif de faciliter l'accès et la diffusion de travaux de recherches développés sur cette espèce à la communauté scientifique internationale concernée par Tapes philippinarum. La synthèse bibliographique comprend des publications scientifiques ainsi que de la littérature grise publiées dans le monde depuis le début du siècle. La synthèse bibliographique de l'espèce est mise à jour ainsi que la distribution géographique de cette espèce. L'importance de Tapes philippinarum est évaluée à travers les productions obtenues en aquaculture et par pêche dans les principaux pays producteurs. La production globale mondiale de Tapes philippinarum a atteint 632 925 tonnes en 1994, dont 90% provient de la production aquacole et majoritairement de la Chine.

This report details the results of clam stock assessment survey, which took place between 14 May and 17 June 2018 in Arcachon Bay. Co-organized with CDPMEM33, with financial support from DLAL FEAMP Arcachon Basin Val de l'Eyre, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the CDPMEM33 and Ifremer, the clam stock assessment and its characteristics were provided. The samples were collected from 533 sampling stations distributed over an area of 52 km², with an Hamon grab, using a generalized random tessellation stratified spatially balanced design (GRTS). Venerupis philippinarum remains the dominant species with 99 % of the population. The size distribution of Manila clam is in the range 5 – 41 mm with a main mode around 24-28 mm. In 2018, the mean densities are 39 individuals per m² and 192 g per m². The total biomass (all species) is estimated about 8 242 tons (including 8 194 tons for V. philippinarum) and 1 684 millions of individuals (including 1 673 millions for V. philippinarum). Regarding V. Philippinarum, the exploitable fraction (L ≥ 35 mm) is about 2,4 % in numbers and 6 % in biomass, i.e. 41 millions of individuals and 490 tons. The juveniles abundance (L < 17 mm) is estimated about 128 millions of individuals and 63 tons, i.e. 8 % in numbers and less than 1 % in biomass. The spawning stock biomass (L ≥ 25 mm) is 6 966 tons for 1 125 millions of individuals, i.e. 85 % in biomass and 67 % in numbers. The stock of Manila clams thus remains at a high level, but the exploitable and juveniles fractions have sharply decreased since the last assessment in 2014., Le présent rapport détaille les résultats de la campagne d'évaluation du stock de palourdes du bassin d’Arcachon, qui s’est déroulée entre le 14 mai et le 17 juin 2018. Co-organisée avec le CDPMEM33, et bénéficiant du soutien financier du DLAL FEAMP Bassin d’Arcachon Val de l’Eyre, de la Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, du CDPMEM33 et de l’Ifremer, l’estimation du stock de palourdes ainsi que ses caractéristiques ont pu être produites. Les prélèvements ont été réalisés au moyen d’une benne Hamon, suivant un protocole d’échantillonnage aléatoire stratifié spatialement équilibré (GRTS - generalized random tessellation stratified), sur 533 points du bassin répartis sur une zone de 52 km². La palourde japonaise Venerupis philippinarum reste l’espèce dominante avec 99 % des effectifs. Les palourdes japonaises échantillonnées présentent une taille comprise entre 5 mm et 41 mm avec un mode principal autour de 24-28 mm. En 2018, les densités moyennes relevées sont de 39 palourdes par m² pour un poids de 192 g par m². Le stock de palourdes toutes espèces confondues s’élève à 8 242 tonnes (dont 8 194 tonnes de palourde japonaise) pour 1 684 millions d’individus (dont 1 673 millions de palourde japonaise). Pour la palourde japonaise, la fraction exploitable du stock (L ≥ 35 mm) représente 2,4 % en effectif et 6,0 % en biomasse, soit 41 millions d’individus pour 490 tonnes. Le niveau d’abondance des juvéniles (L < 17 mm) s’élève à 128 millions d’individus pour une biomasse de 63 tonnes, ce qui représente 8 % des effectifs et moins de 1 % de la biomasse. Le stock de reproducteurs (L ≥ 25 mm) est estimé à 6 966 tonnes pour 1 125 millions d’individus, soit 85 % de la biomasse et 67 % des effectifs. Le stock total de palourde japonaise reste ainsi à un niveau élevé mais la fraction exploitable et celle des juvéniles sont en forte baisse depuis la dernière évaluation de 2014.
