In the present study we investigate the putative differences in pain catastrophising (PC), pain perception (PP), sexual functioning (SF), satisfaction (SS), and overall quality of life between fibromyalgia (FM) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients as compared to healthy controls (HC).Fifty-seven native Italian-speaking female individuals suffering either from FM or RA and thirty-eight healthy female controls (FM = 40; RA = 17; HC = 38) were submitted to a semi-structured interview aimed at assessing PP intensity (Visual Analog Scale; VAS), general health conditions (36-items Short-Form Health Survey; SF-36), PC (Pain Catastrophising Scale; PCS), SF and SS (Index of Sexual Satisfaction; ISS/ Female Sexual Function Index; FSFI).FM patients had a significantly higher PP both as compared to RA and HC (p0.002 for both), and higher PC as compared to HC but not as compared to RA patients (p0.03 and p0.64). When compared to RA patients and HC, they showed a lower quality of life (p0.002 for both comparisons), a compromised SF (p0.003 and p0.002, respectively) and a lower index of SS with respect to HC (p0.002). RA patients had higher PP (VAS; p0.002), lower quality of life and SF as compared to HC (p0.002 and p0.003, respectively).FM and RA patients showed a significantly lower quality of life, SF and SS as compared to HC. PC was significantly related to PP and low quality of life in FM patients while in RA patients it negatively affected quality of life and especially the sexual sphere both when considering SF and SS.

We describe a case of spontaneous rupture of the splenic vein in a pregnant patient at 33 weeks gestation. For the first time in literature, we report follow-up investigations aimed at understanding the cause of the event. The woman was admitted to the emergency ward for hypovolemic shock. Maternal and fetal distress prompted an immediate cesarean section. The fetus was delivered stillborn, hemoperitoneum was present and two spontaneous splenic vein’s lacerations were found to be the source of the bleeding. The immediate splenectomy and aggressive correction of anemia and coagulopathy determined maternal survival. During the follow-up, no evidence of neither congenital nor acquired causative factors for a splenic vein rupture was found. The aim of reporting this case is to increase the awareness between clinicians of this condition since it is both rare and with an aspecific clinical picture. It presents itself in apparently low-risk patients and a good maternal-fetal outcome can only be achieved by early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) refers to broad spectrum of genetic diseases characterized by peripheral resistance to Parathormone (PTH). This condition leads to hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphatemia and elevated PTH concentrations. There is scant literature on PHP in pregnancy with 9 cases published. The treatment of the disease in pregnant women is challenging and the main target is to avoid hyper/hypocalcemia to prevent maternal adverse effects and to protect fetal parathyroid glands development. We report a rare case of PHP type 1b in pregnant woman treated with a tailored therapy.

In very general terms, hypsometry is the measurement of land elevation. In geomorphology, hypsometry refers to the analysis of the cumulative distribution of the elevation, absolute or relative, in a given region. The distribution of elevation is a basic topographic feature of a territory, and its representation is useful for interpreting and characterizing geomorphic processes. Hypsometry can be computed in spatial domains of any shape and extent, including the whole earth surface; however, often the studies of hypsometry focus on drainage basins. Hypsometric curves, which represent the fraction of area above a given elevation, are a widely adopted tool for the graphical representation of hypsometry. Given the relationships between hypsometric characteristics and geomorphic processes and factors, it is not surprising the ample literature related to the exploitation of hypsometric-based indices in multiple research contexts, not limited to the analysis of drainage basins (e.g., morphology of glaciers, planetary morphology, etc.).

The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is rapidly increasing and several scientific studies have addressed their toxicological properties. However, only a very small number of publications have deal with the interaction between CNTs and other molecules. Triclosan (TCS) is an antibacterial agent used in personal care and household products. Commonly detected in aquatic ecosystems, there is a strong evidence that aquatic biota is sensitive to this compound. Aside from emergent pollutants, aquatic organisms are continuously subjected to abiotic variations including salinities. Therefore, the main goal of the present study was to better understand how physio-chemical interactions of CNTs with TCS under different salinity levels (37, 28 and 19) affect the mussel species Mytilus galloprovincialis through the evaluation of biochemical alterations on gametes (sperms) and adult tissues, providing more ecologically relevant information on organisms' responses. The results showed toxicological effects in terms of sperm metabolic activity and intracellular reactive oxygen species production as well as cellular damage and alteration of metabolic capacity at the adult's stage when exposed to both contaminants acting alone and in combination, under tested salinities. Moreover, when the mussels were exposed to the combination of both contaminants, they showed major toxic impacts on both assessed biological levels (adult tissues and sperms) especially under control salinity. This suggests that toxicity upon mixture exposure compared to single-substance exposure may impair mussels' populations, affecting reproduction success and growth. published

A validade desse método está na possibilidade de alimentar os processos de planejamento e projeto com informações que deem condições para a produção de lugares no ambiente urbano, lugares que estejam sujeitos à realização do habitar, e que não sejam agentes da alienação à cidade. Para isso foi utilizada a Fenomenologia, porém numa perspectiva voltada ao campo da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo, aqui denominada Fenomenologia Experimental. Os termos e conceitos utilizados, inclusive o conceito de Lugar, estão relacionados ao campo da Fenomenologia. As pontes urbanas foram definidas para a verificação da validade do método, pois se considera que sejam lugares ricos de indícios sobre a forma como o homem ocupa a cidade. A atividade de investigação ocorreu na Nova Ponte da Passagem, na cidade de Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Constatou-se que o método de investigação resultou na obtenção de rico material de referência sobre as relações entre os sujeitos e o lugar, contribuindo assim para o entendimento mais profundo dessas relações. Concluiu-se, portanto, pela viabilidade da sua utilização no contexto dos processos de planejamento e projeto das cidades.

Flash floods are a major natural hazard under different climatic conditions. In the European Alps, flash flood hazard often results in major risk due to the increasing presence of elements at risk (urban areas and transportation routes) in valley floors and on alluvial fans endangered by flash floods. The assessment of the hazards related to flash floods requires collection of reliable quantitative data on these phenomena. Due to the space scale of flash flood occurrence, which mostly occur in ungauged catchments, hydrometeorological data from monitoring network need to be integrated by data collected by means of post-flood surveys. This paper presents methods for flash flood data collection and discusses the basic characteristics of flash floods in alpine catchments based on the analysis of a sample of 6 flash floods (20 catchments), which occurred from 1999 to 2006 in Italy, Austria and Slovenia.

The 2 June 2008 flood-producing storm on the Starzel river basin in South-West Germany is examined as a prototype for organized convective systems that dominate the upper tail of the precipitation frequency distribution and are likely responsible for the flash flood peaks in this region. The availability of high-resolution rainfall estimates from radar observations and a rain gauge network, together with indirect peak discharge estimates from a detailed post-event survey, provides the opportunity to study the hydrometeorological and hydrological mechanisms associated with this extreme storm and the ensuing flood. Radar-derived rainfall, streamgauge data and indirect estimates of peak discharges are used along with a distributed hydrologic model to reconstruct hydrographs at multiple locations. The influence of storm structure, evolution and motion on the modeled flood hydrograph is examined by using the "spatial moments of catchment rainfall" (Zoccatelli et al., 2011). It is shown that downbasin storm motion had a noticeable impact on flood peak magnitude. Small runoff ratios (less than 20%) characterized the runoff response. The flood response can be reasonably well reproduced with the distributed hydrological model, using high resolution rainfall observations and model parameters calibrated at a river section which includes most of the area impacted by the storm.

This work introduces a fast algorithm based on Singular Value Decomposition to compute the Nonuniform Fourier Transform. This approach is compared to proven techniques like the ones based on interpolation and least square approximation. Nonuniform Fourier exponentials are approximated through a set of optimum spaces obtained by modulating a single space. For a fixed precision, the space dimension is smaller with respect to the previous approaches, resulting in a computational cost reduction. Furthermore, the proposed formulation involves only real-complex multiplications rather than complex-complex ones. As a counterpart, the amount of projections to be computed is higher with respect to proven approaches. So, the proposed algorithm results to be optimum for dense nonuniformly sampled frequencies.

In molte zone montane le colate detritiche (debris flow) sono fra i processi torrentizi di maggiore importanza, sia ai fini dell'evoluzione morfologica dei bacini idrografici, sia, soprattutto, perché spesso determinano gravi situazioni di rischio per le infrastrutture antropiche. Nell'ambito dell'attività di ricerca sulle colate detritiche, la raccolta in campagna di dati sperimentali risulta del massimo interesse ai fini dell'interpretazione dei processi e della loro simulazione mediante modelli fisici e numerici. A significative esperienze di monitoraggio sviluppate in altre regioni geografiche fa riscontro in Europa una generalizzata carenza di dati sperimentali rilevati in campagna. Al fine di fornire un contributo alla raccolta sperimentale di dati sulle caratteristiche delle colate detritiche in ambiente alpino il CNR IRPI di Torino ha avviato una ricerca in tal senso circa dieci anni or sono, e la ha successivamente proseguita in collaborazione con il CNR IRPI di Padova e con il supporto logistico della Direzione Foreste della Regione Friuli - Venezia Giulia. Per questo studio è stato scelto il bacino del Torrente Moscardo, nelle Alpi Carniche. Il bacino, chiuso all'apice del conoide, copre una superficie di 4.1 km2, con un rilievo di 1150 m; la lunghezza dell'asta torrentizia principale è di 2760 m. Si è proceduto alla scelta dell'area di studio tenendo conto soprattutto dell'elevata frequenza delle colate detritiche, della facilità di accesso al sito di misura e della presenza di un canale di deflusso ben definito e scarsamente soggetto a divagazioni. Nel 1989 ha iniziato a funzionare sul Torrente Moscardo un sistema di monitoraggio costituito da due sensori a ultrasuoni (ecometri) installati in un tratto d'alveo pressoché rettilineo ubicato nella parte centrale del conoide alluvionale. L'intervallo di tempo che intercorre fra le registrazioni del passaggio del fronte della massa detritica alle sezioni attrezzate consente una valutazione della sua velocità media. L'esame delle misure rilevate dagli ecometri in ogni sezione permette, inoltre, di analizzare il profilo della colata e le eventuali fasi di deposizione e di erosione del materiale solido nel corso di un evento. Il rilievo dei dati di precipitazione rende infine possibile la caratterizzazione degli eventi pluviometrici che causano l'innesco delle colate detritiche. I positivi risultati ottenuti nei primi anni di attività del bacino attrezzato (fra il 1990 e il 1994 sono stati registrati 11 eventi) hanno suggerito di proseguire l'attività di ricerca anche attraverso l'installazione di nuova strumentazione. Attualmente il sistema di monitoraggio, al cui rinnovo si è proceduto nel corso del 1995, risulta così composto: -un pluviografo ubicato poco fuori dal bacino attrezzato; -un set di geofoni installati lungo la sponda del torrente nella parte medio-inferiore del bacino, a monte del conoide alluvionale; -quattro sensori a ultrasuoni installati in tre sezioni del torrente, nella parte centrale del conoide, in un tratto della lunghezza complessiva di 369 metri: la sezione di monte è strumentata con due sensori affiancati; -una telecamera, posizionata in modo da coprire gran parte dell'alveo fra le prime due sezioni attrezzate con sensori a ultrasuoni; Rispetto al sistema di monitoraggio funzionante in precedenza, l'intervallo fra l'acquisizione di due dati successivi da parte degli ecometri è stato abbassato da 10 secondi a 1 secondo, al fine di assicurare una più dettagliata rappresentazione del fenomeno. I quattro sensori a ultrasuoni sono gestiti da una stazione di acquisizione dati che provvede anche ad attivare la telecamera in occasione di rapide variazioni del livello idrometrico del torrente, situazioni indicative del probabile verificarsi di una colata detritica; la restante strumentazione dispone di sistemi di registrazione autonomi. Nei mesi di giugno e luglio del 1996 sono state registrate sul Torrente Moscardo due colate detritiche, a loro volta articolate in diverse pulsazioni. Le immagini video delle colate sono risultate di grande utilità per l'interpretazione dei fenomeni, mentre la contestuale disponibilità dei dati registrati dai geofoni e dagli ecometri ha reso possibile la valutazione delle velocità medie di traslazione della colata in diversi tratti d'alveo. Nel presente lavoro viene fornita una dettagliata descrizione delle colate registrate, con particolare attenzione alle diverse fasi in cui queste si sono articolate. Entrambi gli eventi sono stati preceduti da deflussi di piena piuttosto sostenuti, avvenuti probabilmente in forma iperconcentrata; le colate detritiche hanno quindi avuto inizio con una rapida risalita del livello del torrente, accompagnata dal passaggio di tronchi d'albero; in questa fase del fenomeno il fluido risultava caratterizzato da turbolenze piuttosto accentuate. Seguiva la parte dell'evento caratterizzata dalle maggiori altezze idrometriche: in questa fase, pur non potendosi riconoscere la presenza di una "zona rigida" (rigid plug) spesso citata nella letteratura scientifica, il fenomeno presentava caratteristiche tipiche del fronte delle colate detritiche: trasporto di massi di cospicue dimensioni, attenuazione delle turbolenze, presenza di un'abbondante matrice fluida. Nella fase successiva degli eventi la presenza di materiale grossolano si faceva più sporadica, mentre le immagini registrate mostrano una progressiva diminuzione della concentrazione della massa defluente. In entrambi gli eventi si è osservato, alcuni minuti dopo il passaggio del fronte principale della colata, il passaggio di ulteriori ondate di minori dimensioni. La memoria propone infine alcune considerazioni sui principali problemi legati al monitoraggio delle colate detritiche emersi dall'esperienza maturata nel Torrente Moscardo e sulle prospettive di impiego dei dati nell'ambito della futura attività di ricerca.

In this work, the influence of two in-plane stiffening and strengthening techniques of traditional timber floors realized with single layer of boards in the seismic response of existing masonry buildings is investigated via numerical approach. Two retrofitting methods have been considered: addition of 45° inclined timber boards and addition of a RC slab. The dynamic behaviour of a two-storey case-study building subjected to various seismic shocks has been analysed via non-linear finite-element modelling, in order to compare the effects of the adopted retrofitting methods. All the mechanical parameters introduced in the model were calibrated from experimental data obtained from literature. The 3D model takes into account the hysteretic behaviour of masonry and floors and allows to estimate the type of failure and the corresponding PGA.
