Over the past decade, Antarctic sea ice extent exhibited a sequence of record maxima, followed by a rapid decline in 2015/16, and record minima since. In this presentation, we show that this sudden and remarkable ice loss marks an abrupt transition from a high to a low ice state that cannot be explained by year-to-year variability. Instead, it is most likely associated with a longer term variability arising from ice–ocean feedbacks. The abrupt transition was preceded by an increase in persistence and variance of the sea ice anomalies, an increasing upper Southern Ocean density stratification, and an accumulation of heat at the subsurface; suggesting a decoupling of the surface from the subsurface ocean. During this period, the sea ice anomalies shifted from being structured predominantly regionally and seasonally to a largely circumpolar and interannual regime. In 2015/16, the upper ocean density stratification in the ice-covered region suddenly weakened, leading to a release of the heat from the subsurface, contributing to the sea ice decline during winter. Our analysis suggests that the sudden sea ice loss in 2015/16, and the persisting low ice conditions since, arose from a systematic change in the physical state of the coupled circumpolar ice–ocean system. Destructive interference of electron hopping on the frustrated kagome lattice generates Dirac nodes, saddle points, and flat bands in the electronic structure. The latter provides the narrow bands and a peak in the density of states that can generate correlated electron behavior when the Fermi level lies within them. In the kagome metal CoSn, this alignment is not realized, and the compound is a Pauli paramagnet. Here we show that replacing part of the tin with indium (CoSn1-xInx) moves the Fermi energy into the flat band region, with support from band structure calculations, heat capacity measurements, and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The associated instability results in the emergence of itinerant antiferromagnetism with a Neel temperature up to 30K. Long range magnetic order is confirmed by neutron diffraction measurements, which indicate an ordered magnetic moment of 0.1-0.2 Bohr magnetons per Co (for x = 0.4). Thus, CoSn1-xInx provides a rare example of an itinerant antiferromagnet with a small ordered moment. This work provides clear evidence that flat bands arising from frustrated lattices in bulk crystals represent a viable route to new physics, evidenced here by the emergence of magnetic order upon introducing a non-magnetic dopant into a non-magnetic kagome metal.

Kagom${��}$ lattice is a fertile platform for topological and intertwined electronic excitations. Recently, experimental evidence of an unconventional charge density wave (CDW) is observed in a Z2 kagom${��}$ metal AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ (A= K, Cs, Rb). This observation triggers wide interests on the interplay between frustrated crystal structure and Fermi surface instabilities. Here we analyze the lattice effect and its impact on CDW in AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$. Based on published experimental data, we show that the CDW induced structural distortions is consistent with the theoretically predicted inverse star-of-David pattern, which preserves the $D_{6h}$ symmetry in the kagom${��}$ plane but breaks the sixfold rotational symmetry of the crystal due to the phase shift between kagom${��}$ layers. The coupling between the lattice and electronic degrees of freedom yields a weak first order structural transition without continuous change of lattice dynamics. Our result emphasizes the fundamental role of lattice geometry in proper understanding of unconventional electronic orders in AV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$.

Arctic Report Card

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties.Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields $H_{\rm ext}$ greater than the typical lab-scale magnetic fields 10--15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane $H_{\rm ext} \sim$ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. Here, using $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu$^{2+}$ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane $H_{\rm ext}$. Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is a target in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Nintedanib, an oral triple angiokinase inhibitor of VEGF receptor, platelet-derived growth factor receptor, and fibroblast growth factor receptor, has shown activity in phase 2 trials in this setting. We investigated the combination of nintedanib with standard carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer.METHODS: In this double-blind phase 3 trial, chemotherapy-naive patients (aged 18 years or older) with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) IIB-IV ovarian cancer and upfront debulking surgery were stratified by postoperative resection status, FIGO stage, and planned carboplatin dose. Patients were randomly assigned (2:1) via an interactive voice or web-based response system to receive six cycles of carboplatin (AUC 5 mg/mL per min or 6 mg/mL per min) and paclitaxel (175 mg/m(2)) in addition to either 200 mg of nintedanib (nintedanib group) or placebo (placebo group) twice daily on days 2-21 of every 3-week cycle for up to 120 weeks. Patients, investigators, and independent radiological reviewers were masked to treatment allocation. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed progression-free survival analysed in the intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01015118.FINDINGS: Between Dec 9, 2009, and July 27, 2011, 1503 patients were screened and 1366 randomly assigned by nine study groups in 22 countries: 911 to the nintedanib group and 455 to the placebo group. 486 (53%) of 911 patients in the nintedanib group experienced disease progression or death compared with 266 (58%) of 455 in the placebo group. Median progression-free survival was significantly longer in the nintedanib group than in the placebo group (17·2 months [95% CI 16·6-19·9] vs 16·6 months [13·9-19·1]; hazard ratio 0·84 [95% CI 0·72-0·98]; p=0·024). The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (diarrhoea: nintedanib group 191 [21%] of 902 grade 3 and three [INTERPRETATION: Nintedanib in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel is an active first-line treatment that significantly increases progression-free survival for women with advanced ovarian cancer, but is associated with more gastrointestinal adverse events. Future studies should focus on improving patient selection and optimisation of tolerability.FUNDING: Boehringer Ingelheim.

We report combined experimental and theoretical analysis of superconductivity in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ (CaK1144) for $x=$0, 0.017 and 0.034. To obtain the superfluid density, $\rho=\left(1+\Delta \lambda_L(T)/\lambda_L(0) \right)^{-2}$, the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, $\Delta \lambda_L (T)$, was measured by using tunnel-diode resonator (TDR) and the results agreed with the microwave coplanar resonator (MWR) with the small differences accounted for by considering a three orders of magnitude higher frequency of MWR. The absolute value of $\lambda_L (T \ll T_c) \approx \lambda_L(0)$ was measured by using MWR, $\lambda_L (\mathrm{5~K}) \approx 170 \pm 20$ nm, which agreed well with the NV-centers in diamond optical magnetometry that gave $\lambda_L (\mathrm{5~K}) \approx 196 \pm 12$ nm. The experimental results are analyzed within the Eliashberg theory, showing that the superconductivity of CaK1144 is well described by the nodeless s$_{\pm}$ order parameter and that upon Ni doping the interband interaction increases., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We present a comprehensive study of the critical current densities and the superconducting vortex phase diagram in the stoichiometric superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ which has a critical temperature of 35 K. We performed detailed magnetization measurements both of high quality single crystals for different orientations in an applied magnetic field up to 16 T and for a powder sample. We find an extremely large critical current density, Jc, up to 10$^8$ A/cm2 for single crystals when H||(ab) at 5 K, which remains robust in fields up to 16 T, being the largest of any other iron-based superconductor. The critical current density is reduced by a factor 10 in single crystals when H||c at 5 K and significantly suppressed by the presence of grain boundaries in the powder sample. We also observe the presence of the fishtail effect in the magnetic hysteresis loops of single crystals when H||c. The flux pinning force density and the pinning parameters suggest that the large critical current could be linked to the existence of point core and surface pinning. Based on the vortex phase diagram and the large critical current densities, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is now established as a potential iron-based superconductor candidate for practical applications., 14 pages, 9 figures

Two ordering states, antiferromagnetism and nematicity, have been observed in most iron-based superconductors (SCs). In contrast to those SCs, the newly discovered SC CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called hedgehog spin-vortex crystal structure, without nematic order, providing the opportunity for the investigation into the relationship between spin fluctuations and SC without any effects of nematic fluctuations. Our $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ (0$\le x\le$ 0.049) revealed that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is located close to a hidden hedgehog SVC AFM quantum-critical point (QCP). The magnetic QCP without nematicity in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ highlights the close connection of spin fluctuations and superconductivity in iron-based SCs. The advantage of stoichiometric composition also makes CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ an ideal platform for further detailed investigation of the relationship between magnetic QCP and superconductivity in iron-based SCs without disorder effects., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. In 2016, the dominant greenhouse gases released into Earth's atmosphere-carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide-continued to increase and reach new record highs. The 3.5 +/- 0.1 ppm rise in global annual mean carbon dioxide from 2015 to 2016 was the largest annual increase observed in the 58-year measurement record. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration at Earth's surface surpassed 400 ppm (402.9 +/- 0.1 ppm) for the first time in the modern atmospheric measurement record and in ice core records dating back as far as 800000 years. One of the strongest El Nino events since at least 1950 dissipated in spring, and a weak La Nina evolved later in the year. Owing at least in part to the combination of El Nino conditions early in the year and a long-term upward trend, Earth's surface observed record warmth for a third consecutive year, albeit by a much slimmer margin than by which that record was set in 2015. Above Earth's surface, the annual lower troposphere temperature was record high according to all datasets analyzed, while the lower stratospheric temperature was record low according to most of the in situ and satellite datasets. Several countries, including Mexico and India, reported record high annual temperatures while many others observed near-record highs. A week-long heat wave at the end of April over the northern and eastern Indian peninsula, with temperatures surpassing 44 degrees C, contributed to a water crisis for 330 million people and to 300 fatalities. In the Arctic the 2016 land surface temperature was 2.0 degrees C above the 1981-2010 average, breaking the previous record of 2007, 2011, and 2015 by 0.8 degrees C, representing a 3.5 degrees C increase since the record began in 1900. The increasing temperatures have led to decreasing Arctic sea ice extent and thickness. On 24 March, the sea ice extent at the end of the growth season saw its lowest maximum in the 37-year satellite record, tying with 2015 at 7.2% below the 1981-2010 average. The September 2016 Arctic sea ice minimum extent tied with 2007 for the second lowest value on record, 33% lower than the 1981-2010 average. Arctic sea ice cover remains relatively young and thin, making it vulnerable to continued extensive melt. The mass of the Greenland Ice Sheet, which has the capacity to contribute similar to 7 m to sea level rise, reached a record low value. The onset of its surface melt was the second earliest, after 2012, in the 37-year satellite record. Sea surface temperature was record high at the global scale, surpassing the previous record of 2015 by about 0.01 degrees C. The global sea surface temperature trend for the 21st century-to-date of +0.162 degrees C decade(-1) is much higher than the longer term 1950-2016 trend of +0.100 degrees C decade(-1). Global annual mean sea level also reached a new record high, marking the sixth consecutive year of increase. Global annual ocean heat content saw a slight drop compared to the record high in 2015. Alpine glacier retreat continued around the globe, and preliminary data indicate that 2016 is the 37th consecutive year of negative annual mass balance. Across the Northern Hemisphere, snow cover for each month from February to June was among its four least extensive in the 47-year satellite record. Continuing a pattern below the surface, record high temperatures at 20-m depth were measured at all permafrost observatories on the North Slope of Alaska and at the Canadian observatory on northernmost Ellesmere Island. In the Antarctic, record low monthly surface pressures were broken at many stations, with the southern annular mode setting record high index values in March and June. Monthly high surface pressure records for August and November were set at several stations. During this period, record low daily and monthly sea ice extents were observed, with the November mean sea ice extent more than 5 standard deviations below the 1981-2010 average. These record low sea ice values contrast sharply with the record high values observed during 2012-14. Over the region, springtime Antarctic stratospheric ozone depletion was less severe relative to the 1991-2006 average, but ozone levels were still low compared to pre-1990 levels. Closer to the equator, 93 named tropical storms were observed during 2016, above the 1981-2010 average of 82, but fewer than the 101 storms recorded in 2015. Three basins-the North Atlantic, and eastern and western North Pacific-experienced above-normal activity in 2016. The Australian basin recorded its least active season since the beginning of the satellite era in 1970. Overall, four tropical cyclones reached the Saffir-Simpson category 5 intensity level. The strong El Nino at the beginning of the year that transitioned to a weak La Nina contributed to enhanced precipitation variability around the world. Wet conditions were observed throughout the year across southern South America, causing repeated heavy flooding in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Wetter-than-usual conditions were also observed for eastern Europe and central Asia, alleviating the drought conditions of 2014 and 2015 in southern Russia. In the United States, California had its first wetter-than-average year since 2012, after being plagued by drought for several years. Even so, the area covered by drought in 2016 at the global scale was among the largest in the post-1950 record. For each month, at least 12% of land surfaces experienced severe drought conditions or worse, the longest such stretch in the record. In northeastern Brazil, drought conditions were observed for the fifth consecutive year, making this the longest drought on record in the region. Dry conditions were also observed in western Bolivia and Peru; it was Bolivia's worst drought in the past 25 years. In May, with abnormally warm and dry conditions already prevailing over western Canada for about a year, the human-induced Fort McMurray wildfire burned nearly 590000 hectares and became the costliest disaster in Canadian history, with $3 billion (U.S. dollars) in insured losses.

We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on a new iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ with $T_{\rm c}$ = 35 K. $^{75}$As NMR spectra show two distinct lines corresponding to the As(1) and As(2) sites close to the K and Ca layers, respectively, revealing that K and Ca layers are well ordered without site inversions. We found that nuclear quadrupole frequencies $\nu_{\rm Q}$ of the As(1) and As(2) sites show an opposite temperature ($T$) dependence. Nearly $T$ independent behavior of the Knight shifts $K$ are observed in the normal state, and a sudden decrease in $K$ in the superconducting (SC) state clearly evidences spin-singlet Cooper pairs. $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/$T_1$ show a power law $T$ dependence with different exponents for the two As sites. The isotropic antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations characterized by the wavevector ${\bf q}$ = ($\pi$, 0) or (0, $\pi$) in the single-iron Brillouin zone notation are revealed by 1/$T_1T$ and $K$ measurements. Such magnetic fluctuations are necessary to explain the observed temperature dependence of the $^{75}$As quadrupole frequencies, as evidenced by our first-principles calculations. In the SC state, 1/$T_1$ shows a rapid decrease below $T_{\rm c}$ without a Hebel-Slichter peak and decreases exponentially at low $T$, consistent with an $s^{\pm}$ nodeless two-gap superconductor., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev. Coexistence of a new-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, the so-called hedgehog spin-vortex crystal (SVC), and superconductivity (SC) is evidenced by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance study on single-crystalline CaK(Fe$_{0.951}$Ni$_{0.049}$)$_4$As$_4$. The hedgehog SVC order is clearly demonstrated by the direct observation of the internal magnetic induction along the $c$ axis at the As1 site (close to K) and a zero net internal magnetic induction at the As2 site (close to Ca) below an AFM ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ $\sim$ 52 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$ shows a distinct decrease below $T_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 10 K, providing also unambiguous evidence for the microscopic coexistence. Furthermore, based on the analysis of the 1/$T_1$ data, the hedgehog SVC-type spin correlations are found to be enhanced below $T$ $\sim$ 150 K in the paramagnetic state. In the last few years, several practitioners have proposed a wide range of approaches for reducing the implementation area of the AES in hardware. However, an area-throughput trade-off that undermines high-speed is not realistic for real-time cryptographic applications. In this manuscript, we explore how Genetic Algorithms (GAs) can be used for pipelining the AES substitution box based on composite field arithmetic. We implemented a framework that parses and analyzes a Verilog netlist, abstracts it as a graph of interconnected cells and generates circuit statistics on its elements and paths. With this information, the GA extracts the appropriate arrangement of Flip-Flops (FFs) that maximizes the throughput of the given netlist. In doing so, we show that it is possible to achieve a 50 % improvement in throughput with only an 18 % increase in area in the UMC 0.13 \(\mu \)m low-leakage standard cell library.

In the context of attacking elliptic-curve scalar multiplication with template attacks, one can interleave template generation and template matching to reduce the amount of template traces. This paper enhances the power of this technique by defining and applying the concept of online template attacks (OTA); a general attack technique with minimal assumptions for an attacker, who has very limited control over the target device. We show that OTA need only one power consumption trace of a scalar multiplication on the target device; they are thus suitable not only against ECDSA and static Diffie-Hellman, but also against elliptic-curve scalar multiplication in ephemeral Diffie-Hellman. In addition, OTA need only one template trace per scalar bit and they can be applied to almost all scalar-multiplication algorithms. To demonstrate the power of OTA we recover scalar bits of a scalar multiplication using the double-and-add-always algorithm on a twisted Edwards curve running on a smart card with an ATmega163 CPU.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world's largest and most energetic laser system, is now operational at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A key goal of the NIF is to demonstrate fusion ignition for the first time in the laboratory. Its flexibility allows multiple target designs (both indirect and direct drive) to be fielded, offering substantial scope for optimization of a robust target design. In this paper we discuss an approach to generating gigawatt levels of electrical power from a laser-driven source of fusion neutrons based on these demonstration experiments. This 'LIFE' concept enables rapid time-to-market for a commercial power plant, assuming success with ignition and a technology demonstration program that links directly to a facility design and construction project. The LIFE design makes use of recent advances in diode-pumped, solid-state laser technology. It adopts the paradigm of Line Replaceable Units utilized on the NIF to provide high levels of availability and maintainability and mitigate the need for advanced materials development. A demonstration LIFE plant based on these design principles is described, along with the areas of technology development required prior to plant construction. A goal-oriented, evidence-based approach has been proposed to allow LIFE power plant rollout on a time scale that meets policy imperatives and is consistent with utility planning horizons. The system-level delivery builds from our prior national investment over many decades and makes full use of the distributed capability in laser technology, the ubiquity of semiconductor diodes, high volume manufacturing markets, and U.S. capability in fusion science and nuclear engineering. The LIFE approach is based on the ignition evidence emerging from NIF and adopts a line-replaceable unit approach to ensure high plant availability and to allow evolution from available technologies and materials. Utilization of a proven physics platform for the ignition scheme is an essential component of an acceptably low-risk solution. The degree of coupling seen on NIF between driver and target performance mandates that little deviation be adopted from the NIF geometry and beamline characteristics. Similarly, the strong coupling between subsystems in an operational power plant mandates that a self-consistent solution be established via an integrated facility delivery project. The benefits of separability of the subsystems within an IFE plant (driver, chamber, targets, etc.) emerge in the operational phase of a power plant rather than in its developmental phase. An optimized roadmap for IFE delivery needs to account for this to avoid nugatory effort and inconsistent solutions. For LIFE, a system design has been established that could lead to an operating power plant by the mid-2020s, drawing from an integrated subsystem development program to demonstrate the required technology readiness on a time scale compatible with the construction plan. Much technical development work still remains, as does alignment of key stakeholder groups to this newly emerging development option. If the required timeline is to be met, then preparation of a viable program is required alongside the demonstration of ignition on NIF. This will enable timely analysis of the technical and economic case and establishment of the appropriate delivery partnership.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable biocompatible polyesters and very attractive candidates for biomedical applications as materials for tissue engineering. They have a hydrophobic character but some are able to spread at the air water interface to form monomolecularly thin films (Langmuir monolayers). This is a very convenient model to analyze PHA self assembly in two dimensions and to study their molecular interactions with other amphiphilic compounds which is very important considering compatibility between biomaterials and cell membranes. We used the Langmuir monolayer technique and Brewster angle microscopy to study the properties of poly([R] 3 hydroxy 10 undecenoate) (PHUE) films on the free water surface in various experimental conditions. Moreover we investigated the interactions between the polymer and one of the main biomembrane components 12 dioleoyl snglycero 3 phosphocholine (DOPC). The addition of lipid to a polymer film does not change the monolayer phase behavior; however the interactions between these two materials are repulsive and fall in two composition dependent regimes. In summary this is the first systematic study of the monolayer behavior of PHUE thus forming a solid basis for a thorough understanding of material interactions in particular in the context of biomaterials and implants.

An easy route to planar solid supported polymer membranes by vesicle spreading is described. Pre organized PB PEO assemblies were spread on two different supports i.e. strongly hydrophilic glass surfaces and ultrasmooth gold substrates. Polymer membranes were produced on a hydrophilic support by spreading hydroxyl functionalized polymer vesicles while covalently immobilized polymer membranes were obtained by spreading LA functionalized polymer vesicles on gold substrates. Covalently bound membranes were further incubated with the peptide polymyxin B. Interactions with the polymer membrane were detected by EIS. These systems are of great interest to fundamental membrane science and have potential in technological applications such as drug screening and (bio)sensing.

The binary phase diagram of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide) block poly(g methyl e caprolactone) block copolymers in water is examined for four polymers having the same hydrophilic block length but different hydrophobic block lengths across the whole concentration range. The bulk polymers show no ordered morphology. With increasing water concentration the polymers undergo transitions from lamellar phases to packed vesicles and subsequently all polymers self assemble into vesicles in dilute aqueous solutions. Additionally the largest polymer forms an inverse hexagonal phase and the smallest polymer self aggregates into rod like micelles and showed a hexagonal phase.

A synthetic route toward a new family of amphiphilic mPEG b PMCL b PDMAEMA triblock copolymers is reported. Chemical structures and compositions are confirmed by (1)H NMR and SEC. Polydispersity indices are typically (w) N(agg) A(2) and R(h) are calculated based on static and dynamic light scattering data. Critical aggregation concentrations for the polymers are determined by measuring surface tensions of polymer solutions. TEM is employed to visualize the morphology of the assemblies.

Visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) were studied in 92 asymptomatic long-term survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in first complete remission 6-7 years after cessation of therapy in order to detect therapy-related disturbances in conduction velocity capacities within central nerve fibers. Subjects were grouped with respect to CNS prophylaxis: a) ith. MTX and 18 Gy cranial irradiation (group A, n = 58), b) ith. MTX and iv. MHD-MTX, no cranial irradiation (group B, n = 34). At follow-up VEPs were abnormal in 10 subjects (10.9 %) with comparable rates in both CNS prophylaxis groups (A: 7/58 [12.1 %], B: 3/34 [8.8 %]; p = 0.56). Participants with radiological signs of leukodystrophy (n = 14), all within the irradiated CNS prophylaxis group, showed significantly prolonged P100 latencies and had a 6.1-fold increased relative risk to develop VEP disturbances. No correlation could be established between VEP outcome and illness- or treatment-related parameters. VEP outcome was not correlated with age at diagnosis or gender. Thus, VEP recordings showed a close relationship with radiation-induced CNS white-matter disturbances. However, their value for clinical practice, routinely performed follow-up evaluations or standardized posttreatment surveillance studies is negligible.
