The purpose of this contribution is to photograph and describe, with reasonable accuracy and beginning from the territorial, time and sectoral distribution, the Italian cooperative universe in all its main economic, size and qualitative variables. In the light of the economic crisis triggered by the present epidemic, the mapping work also takes on a further importance in outlining a perspective of analyses on the future impacts of the recession, on the resilience of the cooperative movement and on the role it will be able to play in counteracting the decline in industry and employment.

Il presente volume nasce con l’ambizioso obiettivo di comprendere come e perché l’impresa cooperativa costituisca uno strumento valido per la costruzione e la gestione condivisa dei beni comuni. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, al volume hanno contribuito diciannove autori tra accademici e cooperatori. Il libro è composto da tre sezioni: ‘identità, valori ed obiettivi’, ‘buone pratiche e nuovi orizzonti cooperativi’ e ‘startup cooperative’. Come nel caso del ‘The Co-operator’ di King, che creò una guida pratica e teorica per i cooperatori del futuro, il volume aspira a riaprire un dialogo tra gli accademici, impegnati nello studio dell’impresa cooperativa, ed i cooperatori. Un dialogo all’insegna del bene comune.

Il saggio si concentra sull’esperienza dei workers’ buyout in Italia con dati quantitativi sugli ultimi trent’anni, dal 1986 ad oggi. In questa parte, vengono approfondite le dinamiche di costituzione di un workers’ buyout in Italia, la normativa di riferimento, gli attori coinvolti e l’importanza della forma di impresa cooperativa., Workers’ buyout Corporate Governance e sistemi di controllo

Questo volume è strutturato in due parti nelle quali confluiscono contributi scritti da autori con un background differente e una diversa prospettiva disciplinare. I primi tre capitoli presentano l’esperienza trentennale dei workers’ buyout in Italia, aziende in crisi o in fallimento che vengono acquistate dai lavoratori e si trasformano in imprese cooperative. A supporto, dati quantitativi sull’evoluzione complessiva del fenomeno con un focus sul caso studio Fenix Pharma. Nella seconda parte del volume si affrontano due tematiche che rientrano nell’ambito del filone di studi sulla Corporate Governance e i sistemi di controllo. La prima affronta il tema delle nuove norme in materia di remuneration policies alla luce dell’applicazione della ‘Direttiva 2013/36/UE (c.d. CRD IV). La seconda tematica attiene al Management Control System for Occupational Health and Safety Risk, sistema deputato alla tutela della salute e della sicurezza dei lavoratori importante per la prevenzione dei reati richiamati dall’art. 25-septies del D.Lgs. 231/2001.

In uno studio comparativo tra ltalia, Stati Uniti ed Europa, gli autori ci ricordano l'importanza delle imprese cooperative per la fornitura dei servizi di interesse economico generale. E’ sempre più difficile per le autorità locali o per i singoli stati garantire servizi pubblici e questo vale sia nei paesi più ricchi che in quelli in via di sviluppo. Thanks to its enormous untapped water potential, Brazil provides its electricity matrix with more than 60% hydroelectric power. This technology has had controversial impacts, which questioned its sustainability and stressed its likelihood to jeopardize the development of affected areas. We analyze here one of the main electricity producers: the state of Pará. By using a human development perspective, we integrate the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) with indicators of water and energy access through a principal components analysis. The comparison between the achievements of the municipalities affected and not affected by hydroelectric projects advocates policy makers to improve accesses in order to convey development, not just growth.

This article investigates the evolution of social inclusion among indigenous peoples in Ecuador. It highlights how some policies have deepened social problems like poverty and inequality and reviews the literature on social inclusion to define the reference framework of the investigation, also considering some qualitative aspects, like cultural and linguistic barriers that are crucial for the effectiveness of the policies and essential to understand the indigenous social system. The article compares the actual indigenous condition with the period prior to the Revolución Ciudadana to highlight if notable changes occurred in the quality of life of the Ecuadorian indigenous peoples.

Workers’ buyout (WBOs) are emerging during the present economic crisis as an alternative tool to maintain employment and production. In Italy, in the last thirty years, 258 cases have been recorded. What are their general characteristics? Why do WBOs develop and who are the main sponsors and financing tools? The present analysis aims at defining the phenomenon and the enabling environment. Moreover, primary sources collected from different actors will explain how WBOs have developed and thrived across Italy saving jobs and productive capacity.

The debate on growth and development that has been going on over the last decades has clearly highlighted a number of flaws and contradictions that the theory, as well as the practice, of International Development Cooperation (IDC) has failed to address in a convincing and effective way. IDC, once the prime tool for promoting a change in the livelihoods of the poorest and most vulnerable, is increasingly under scrutiny and does not seem to have provided an effective response to the current crisis. Buen Vivir (good life), Latin America’s new concept for collective well-being, which has emerged over recent years from the traditional cosmovisions of Andean indigenous peoples and translated into political and institutional practice, offers elements of reflection on economy, environment and social life that are useful for reframing the way ‘well-being’ is conceived within the current development setting: a fresh perspective on the most urgent global concerns is particularly useful as the debate regarding the successors to the Millennium Development Goals post-2015 starts to heat up. The new approach to IDC developed in Ecuador in recent years represents an attempt to put some of these elements into practice. However, beyond the experiences in Latin America, that can claim a closer link, albeit not without tensions, with the indigenous peoples with which the Buen Vivir culture has its roots, these suggestions can show an interesting convergence with alternative views on development emerging from the reflections and practices of Western social movements.

This article raises a simple question. In the debate between GDP and other indicators of well-being (e.g., MEW, HDI, GNH), it is forgotten that these are all external indicators that purport to privilege different goals as reflective of human welfare. The larger question is whether it is possible to shift the focus of policy from a battle between competing paradigms to a mechanism for eliciting information on well-being directly from the population.

Over the last few years, environmental issues have entered into policy design, particularly development and growth policies. Natural resources are considered necessary production inputs and environmental quality is considered a welfare determinant. The integration of environmental issues into economic growth and development theories and empirics is currently widely analyzed in the literature. The effects of natural resources endowment on economic growth are mainly analyzed through the so-called Resource Curse Hypothesis (RCH) whereas the effects of economic growth on environmental quality are part of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Furthermore, recent contributions on RCH and EKC have shown the important role of institutions and human development dimensions in building a sustainable development path. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the causal relationships between economic growth, human development and sustainability combining the RCH and EKC models and adopting a human development perspective. Results confirm the importance of high institutional quality and investments for human capital accumulation in order to build a sustainable development path.

In recent few years, the concept of sustainable development has been deeply investigated, both from a pure economic growth perspective and by adopting more heterodox paradigms, which address for human development and institutional quality. The most fashionable empirical models addressing for the role of environment into a development path are the Resource Curse Hypothesis (RCH) and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). The aim of this paper is to build an empirical model which collects inputs both from RCH and EKC studies with an emphasis on the role of human development dimensions and institutions as drivers for a sustainable development path. The results confirm the fundamental role of the quality both of institutions and human capital stock in enhancing economic growth and development while preserving environmental sustainability.
