Abstract: An emulsion-counter hybrid experiment (KEK E176) was carried out to search for double strangeness systems such as double- Λ hypernuclei and H -dibaryons. More than 10% of Ξ − hyperons produced in the (K − , K + ) reaction were brought to rest in the nuclear emulsion. We have obtained 98 candidate events of nuclear capture at rest of Ξ − hyperons which are described in this report. Among those, four events were identified as sequential weak decay of double- Λ hypernuclei. The binding energies of Ξ − -( 12 C, 14 N and 16 O) states have been estimated for two events which emit twin single- Λ hypernuclei back to back from the capture point. The Σ − p decay vertex of an H -dibaryon was searched for near the capture point and no evidence was observed. Upper limits for the branching ratio of H emission are 5–10% for a lifetime less than 0.1 ns at the 90% confidence level. The trapping probabilities of single and double strangeness to a nuclear fragment following Ξ − capture at rest have been studied.

Abstract: The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract: During the years 1994–1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 charged-current interactions with a D 0 in the final state were selected by a pattern recognition program and confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D 0 into four charged particles to two charged particles was measured to be B ( D 0 → V 4 ) / B ( D 0 → V 2 ) = 0.207 ± 0.016 ± 0.004 . The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D 0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D 0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be σ ( D 0 ) / σ ( CC ) = 0.0269 ± 0.0018 ± 0.0013 . In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 ± 0.049 ± 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prong events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be ( 1.2 −0.9 +1.3 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −3 . A measurement of the energy dependence of the D 0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m c , the effective charm-quark mass, a value of ( 1.42 ± 0.08 ) GeV / c 2 .

Using the decay mode D * + → D 0 π + a production cross-section measurement of the D * + in neutrino–nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p T with respect to the D 0 direction. A signal of 22.1 ± 5.5 D * + events was obtained. The D * + production cross-section relative to the D 0 production cross-section, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( D 0 ) , was estimated to be 0.38 ± 0.09 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) . From this result, the fraction of D 0 's produced via the decay of a D * was deduced to be 0.63 ± 0.17 . The D * + production cross-section relative to the ν μ charged-current interaction, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( CC ) , was estimated to be [ 1.02 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) ] % .

Abstract: A hybrid-emulsion experiment has been carried out at KEK-PS to study S = −2 nuclei. With the analysis of about 35% of total emulsion, we have successfully found three events of sequential weak decay of a double-hypernucleus. The results of these E373 events are summarized together with those of past experiments. The first experimental study of the branching ratios of weak decay modes of double-hypernuclei has been performed.

Abstract: A hybrid emulsion experiment was carried out to study double-strangeness nuclei produced via Ξ− hyperon capture at rest with the expectation of ten times larger statistics than previous experiments. We have analyzed 5% of the total emulsion and found one “twin-hypernuclei” event involving the emission of two single-Λ hypernuclei and a nuclear fragment from a Ξ− hyperon stopping point. The event is interpreted as the decay of a Ξ − + 14 N atomic system to 5 Λ He + 5 Λ He + 4 He + neutron . The species of the Ξ−-atom and the fragmentation products are uniquely identified for the first time for twin-hypernuclei events. Combined with the results from a past hybrid-emulsion experiment, one double-Λ hypernucleus and three twin-hypernuclei events have been found from Ξ− captures on light emulsion nuclei. The ratio of the detected rate of double-Λ hypernuclei to that of twin-hypernuclei is compared with theoretical estimates.

Abstract: A study of 1.66 GeV c K − beam induced ( K − ,K + ) reactions in the nuclear emulsion target is presented and 796 ( K − , K + ) reaction vertices ( p K + ⩾ 1 GeV /c ) containing 18 single hyperfragments are identified. There is no clear(spatially separated) double hyperfragment nor twin single hyperfragment in the identified 796 ( K − ,K + ) reactions. These events are classified and their characteristics are described in detail. In the region p K + ⩾ 1 GeV /c where the quasifree K − (p) → K + Ξ − is the dominant process, the probability of Ξ − emission from the reaction vertex is determined to be 73.9 −4.6 +4.5 %. From this value, the mean free path of Ξ − in a nucleus is estimated to be 4.7 −1.0 +1.5 fm for 〈p Ξ − 〉 ∼ 0.6 GeV /c by assuming a simple model of uniform nuclear matter.

Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Abstract: A hybrid experiment with nuclear emulsion and scintillating-fiber detectors (KEK-E373) has been performed to search for double-strangeness systems. Among about 10${}^{3}$ events of ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperons captured at rest by emulsion nuclei, we have observed four events which clearly show the topology of cascade weak decays of double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hypernuclei including the ``Nagara'' event. Regarding the Nagara event, values of the two-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ binding energy (${B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$) and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy ($\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$) of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{}{}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ have been revised to 6.91 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.16 and 0.67 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.17 MeV, respectively, due to the recent change of the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ mass value (Particle Data Group). For another three events, we have determined possible species of double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hypernuclei together with their binding energies.

Abstract: We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. Using the $D_s^+ -> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ yield measured previously in this experiment, we obtain $B(D_s^+ --> \mu^+ \nu_\mu) / B(D_s^+ --> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu) =0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$.

Abstract: An event accompanied by two single hyperfragments emitted from a Ξ− nuclear capture at rest was found in a nuclear emulsion. It is interpreted as a Ξ−-12C bound system decaying into either a) Λ4H + Λ9Be, b) Λ 4 H + Λ 9 Be ∗ or c) Λ 4 H ∗ + Λ 9 Be . The binding energy of the Ξ-12C system is obtained as a) 3.70−0.19+0.18 MeV, b) 0.62−0.19+0.18 MeV and c) 2.66−0.19+0.18 MeV, respectively. The system is considered as a Ξ− hypernucleus in the cases a) and c). In case b), this event and another event of the same type (Yokohama event) can both be interpreted as a decay from the Ξ-12C system in 2P state when a shallow Ξ−-nuclear potential is assumed.

Abstract: A search for charm hadron decays into two muons plus one or more hadrons has been carried out using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer. This technique is sensitive to modes with missing neutrals, e.g. π0μ+μ− and ϱ±μ+μ−, as well as to constrained modes having visible invariant masses equal to those of charm states. No evidence for any such decays has been found, which allows upper limits at the 90% confidence level as low as 1.8 × 10−4 to be placed on the branching fractions for charm-changing neutral-current and lepton-number violating decay modes.

Abstract: The relative branching fraction RK = Γ(D0 → K−μ+v)/Γ(D0 → μ−X) has been measured by Fermilab experiment E653, using D0 mesons produced by 600 GeV π−. The semimuonic decay sample of 232 events was identified by the decay chain D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → μ + h − X , where h is a hadron. The Kμv component was extracted from the joint distribution of these events in the D0 decay variables Mmin and pTh. We find RK = 0.472 ± 0.051 (stat) ± 0.040 (sys), and use a world average of the D0 → Klv branching fraction to obtain the D0 inclusive semimuonic branching fraction B(D0 → μ+X) = (7.67 ± 1.13)%.

Abstract: A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D0→K−π+, D0→K−π+π+π−, and D+→K−π+π+. No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μb per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

Abstract: We present a study of the Cabibbo-allowed semimuonic decay modes of the DS+ produced in 600 GeV c π − -emulsion interactions. From a signal of 18.7±4.9−0.7+0.4 events in the DS+ → oμ+υ channel, the product of production cross section and partial width is measured with respect to that for D + → K ∗0 μ + υ to be ( σ(D S + ) σ(D + )) . (Λ(D S + → oμ + ν)Λ(D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)) = 0.56 ± 0.14 ± 0.12. The form factor ratios in the decay, obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2, are A 2 (0) 1 (0) = 2.1 −0.5 +0.6 ± 0.2 and V (0) A 1 (0) = 2.3 −0.9 +1.1 ± 0.4 , where A1 (0) and A2 (0) are the axial vector form factors and V(0) is the vector form factor, evaluated at q2 = 0. The first observation of DS+ → (ημ+υ + η'μ+υ) is also reported, and Γ (D S + → (ημ + υ + η'μ + υ)) Γ (D S + → oμ + υ) is determined to be 3.9 ± 1.6.

Abstract: We report on the production characteristics and total cross section for 9 beauty hadron pairs produced by a 600 GeV/ c π − beam, the first such information in this energy region. The events were detected in the hybrid emulsion spectrometer of Fermilab Experiment E653. The measured pair cross section for all χ F , assuming linear A dependence, is 33±11 (stat.)±6(syst.) nb/nucleon. Fits of the inclusive single-hadron production distribution to the forms d σ d χ F ∝ (1−|χ F −χ 0 |) n and d σ d p T 2 ∝ exp (−bp t 2 ) give n=5.0 −2.1−1.7 +2.7+1.7 , χ 0 =0.06 −0.07−0.03 +0.06+0.02 , and b=0.13 −0.04−0.02 +0.05+0.02 ( GeV /c −2 . .The pairs tend to be produced back-to-back.

Abstract: The S= −2 hypernuclear states formed through (K − , K + ) reactions have been studied by using the 1.66 GeV/c K − beam provided by KEK Proton Synchrotron. Investigation has been done on the stars due to the capture of the ξ − hyperons at rest in nuclear emulsion, which hyperons were produced in (K − , K + ) reactions. We observed a clear case of an absorption of ξ − hyperon at rest by a nucleus followed by a back-to-back emission of two single-Λ hypernuclei

Abstract: The branching ratio for the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν has been measured with two methods. The first uses D0→K−μ+ν for normalization, and yields the result B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.25±0.71±0.75)% . From this method we also obtain the direct measurement Γ( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)/Γ( D 0 → K − μ + ν)=0.43±0.09±0.09 . The second method uses the mode D+→K−π+π+ for normalization and yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(4.18±0.66±0.96)% . Combining the results of the two methods yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.57±0.96)% .

Abstract: We present total and differential cross sections for charm mesons produced in 600 GeV/c π- emulsion interactions. Fits to d2σ/dxF dpT2∞ (1−|xF|)nexp (-bpT2) for 676 electronically reconstructed D mesons with xF>0 give n=4.25±0.24 (stat.)±0.23 (syst.) and b=0.76±0.03±0.03 (GeV/c)-2. The total inclusive D+ and D0 cross sections are σ(π-N→D±; xF>0) = 8.66±0.46±1.96μb nucleon and σ(π - N→D 0 D 0 ; x F >0)=22.05±1.37±4.82μb nucleonk, where a linear dependence on the mean atomic weight of the target is assumed. These results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Abstract: Results are presented on the production characteristics of charmed particles obtained from the WA75 emulsion hybrid experiment. The events, selected by the presence of a muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction, were located and analysed in nuclear emulsions. Inclusive and correlation properties are systematically compared with the lowest-order QCD calculations for DDBAR hadroproduction. Results concerning the correlation properties indicate some contribution from next-to-leading order [O(alpha(s)3] subprocesses.

The events, selected by the presence of a muon with a high momentum transverse to the beam direction, were located and analysed in nuclear emulsions. A Monte Carlo simulation allowed the computation of acceptances due to both apparatus and selection, as well as scanning and finding efficiencies. The ccBAR hadroproduction cross-section has been determined over the entire X(F) region as sigma(ccBAR)=23.1+/-1.3(stat)+4.0/-3.3(syst) mu-b per nucleon assuming an A0.87 dependence.

Abstract: A measurement of the form factor ratios in the decay D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + ν is obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2 of 305 events. The results, evaluated at q2 = 0, are A2(0)/A1(0) = 0.82+0.22−0.23 (stat.)±0.11 (sys.) and V(0)/A1(0) = 2.00+0.34−0.32±0.16, where A1 and A2 are the axial vector form factors and V is the vector form factor. The corresponding ratio of the longitudinal to transverse polarization of the K ∗0 is 1.18±0.18±0.08. These results are compared with other experimental results and with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We report results on D0 and D+ production in proton-emulsion interactions at s =38.7 GeV. A fit to the form (1−|xF|)n exp (−bp 2 T ) yields n=6.9 +1.9 −1.8 and b=0.84 +0.10 −0.08 (GeV/c)−2. The total inclusive cross section, is assuming linear A dependence, is measured to be 38±3(stat.) ±13 (sys.) μb for the D0 and 38±9±14 μb for the D+. A comparison of these results with previous measurements indicates that nuclear effects do not strongly influence charm production. The predictions of QCD are in good agreement with our data.

Abstract: We present results on charm pair correlations measured in proton-emulsion interactions at s =38.7 GeV. The predictions of leading order QCD for the distributions in invariant mass, rapidity gap, xF, and polar angle in the charm pair CMS are qualitatively consistent with our measurements. The mean pT of the pairs is equal within errors to that measured in dilepton production at the same energy and mass range.

Abstract: The fraction {ital f} of {ital D}{sup 0} semimuonic decays which occur through the {ital K}{mu}{nu} mode has been measured in a hybrid emulsion spectrometer. Analysis of 124 semimuonic {ital D}{sup 0}-decay candidates gives {ital f}=0.32{plus minus}0.05 (stat) {plus minus}0.05 (syst). From this measurement and existing data on the {ital D}{sup 0} semileptonic branching ratio and lifetime, we obtain the branching ratio {ital R}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu})=(2.4{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.5)% and partial decay rate {Gamma}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu})=(5.6{plus minus}0.9{plus minus}1.2){times}10{sup 10} s{sup {minus}1}.

Abstract: We have studied ({ital K}{sup {minus}},{ital K}{sup +}) reactions from an emulsion target. The {ital S}={minus}2 {ital H} dibaryon has been searched for by the analysis of the {ital K}{sup +} momentum spectrum together with emulsion data. No evidence of {ital H} production was observed in the mass range of 1.90--2.16 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. Upper limits for the production cross section of the {ital H} are (0.2--0.6)% of that for the quasifree {Xi}{sup {minus}} production at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: A hybrid apparatus consisting of a movable emulsion target and a magnetic spectrometer was used in a fixed target Fermilab Tevatron experiment to study the production of heavy quarks by high-energy hadron beams. High-resolution silicon microstrip detectors were used for precise tracking in the dense particle environment. Details of the experimental apparatus, including the data acquisition system, are described.

Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ emitted from a ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is $1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.11}^{+0.18}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. This demonstrates that the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract: A hybrid emulsion experiment E373 at KEK has been carried out to study doubly strange nuclear system. By the 8% data analysis of all, one twin single-Λ hypernuclei event and two events of double-Λ hypernucleus have been successfully detected. The twin single-Λ event is uniquely interpreted as Ⅺ−+14N→Λ5He+Λ5He+4He+n for the first time. In the first double-Λ hypernucleus event, “Demachi-Yanagi,” it is interpreted as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ10Be* (or ΛΛ10Be*)+t. The second double-Λ hypernucleus event, “NAGARA,” shows a clearly recognized topology and the interpretation is unique as Ⅺ−+12C→ΛΛ6He+4He+t, ΛΛ6He→Λ5He+π−+p, Λ5He→p+d+2n etc. By the preliminary result of the ΛΛ6He, the attractive ΛΛ interaction has been confirmed with the ΔBΛΛ∼1 MeV.

Abstract: Evidence is reported for the simultaneous production of four charmed particles in interactions induced by 350 GeV/ c π − mesons in stacks of nuclear emulsions. The events were found during a search for beauty particles among a sample of about 200 interactions with candidates for charmed particles. The events selected required the presence of at least one muon with a high component of momentum transverse to the beam direction.

Abstract: The azimuthal correlation distribution of 102 charmed-particle pairs observed in the hybrid emulsion experiment WA75 is compared with theoretical predictions. The various pairs - (D − D 0 ), (D − D + ), (D 0 D 0 ) and (D + D 0 )-all s how, within statistical error, the same azimuthal correlation distribution, demonstrating its independence from the specific nature of the production channel. Among the decays of 150 charged charmed particles and 138 neutral ones seen, higher multiplicities are favoured for hadronic as opposed to semileptonic decays. The data are consistent with the muonic decays of charged D mesons proceeding through the channels (μ ± , v, K 0 ) and [μ ± , v, K ∗0 (892)] , the fraction through K 0 being 0.76±0.06.
