Abstract: SMSS J031300.36-670839.3 (hereafter SM0313-6708) is a sub-giant halo star, with no detectable Fe lines and large overabundances of C and Mg relative to Ca. We obtained VLT-UVES spectra extending to 3060 Angstroms showing strong OH A-X band lines enabling an oxygen abundance to be derived. The OH A-X band lines in SM0313-6708 are much stronger than the CH C-X band lines. Spectrum synthesis fits indicate an [O/C] ratio of 0.02 +- 0.175. Our high S/N UVES data also enabled us to lower the Fe abundance limit to [Fe/H]{3D},NLTE < -7.52 (3 sigma). Abstract: We present a chemical abundance analysis of 300S-1, the brightest likely member star of the 300 km/s stream near the faint satellite galaxy Segue 1. From a high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectrum we determine a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.46 +- 0.05 +- 0.23 (random and systematic uncertainties) for star 300S-1, and find an abundance pattern similar to typical halo stars at this metallicity. Comparing our stellar parameters to theoretical isochrones, we estimate a distance of 18 +- 7 kpc. Both the metallicity and distance estimates are in good agreement with what can be inferred from comparing the SDSS photometric data of the stream stars to globular cluster sequences. While several other structures overlap with the stream in this part of the sky, the combination of kinematic, chemical and distance information makes it unlikely that these stars are associated with either the Segue 1 galaxy, the Sagittarius stream or the Orphan stream. Streams with halo-like abundance signatures, such as the 300 km/s stream, present another observational piece for understanding the accretion history of the Galactic halo., Comment: 13 pages, emulateapj, accepted for publication in ApJ

5. Elemental Abundances and their Implications for the Chemical Enrichment of the Bo��tes~I Ultra-Faint Galaxy

Abstract: We present a double-blind analysis of high-dispersion spectra of seven red giant members of the Bo��tes I ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy, complemented with re-analysis of a similar spectrum of an eighth member star. The stars cover [Fe/H] from -3.7 to -1.9, and include a CEMP-no star with [Fe/H] = -3.33. We conclude from our chemical abundance data that Bo��tes I has evolved as a self-enriching star-forming system, from essentially primordial initial abundances. This allows us uniquely to investigate the place of CEMP-no stars in a chemically evolving system, in addition to limiting the timescale of star formation. The elemental abundances are formally consistent with a halo-like distribution, with enhanced mean [alpha/Fe] and small scatter about the mean. This is in accord with the high-mass stellar IMF in this low-stellar-density, low-metallicity system being indistinguishable from the present-day solar neighborhood value. There is a non-significant hint of a decline in [alpha/Fe] with [Fe/H]; together with the low scatter, this requires low star formation rates, allowing time for SNe ejecta to be mixed over the large spatial scales of interest. One star has very high [Ti/Fe], but we do not confirm a previously published high value of [Mg/Fe] for another star. We discuss the existence of CEMP-no stars, and the absence of any stars with lower CEMP-no enhancements at higher [Fe/H], a situation which is consistent with knowledge of CEMP-no stars in the Galactic field. Abstract: We present a homogeneous chemical abundance analysis of 16 elements in 190 metal-poor Galactic halo stars (38 program and 152 literature objects). The sample includes 171 stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5, of which 86 are extremely metal poor, [Fe/H] < -3.0. Our program stars include ten new objects with [Fe/H] < -3.5. We identify a sample of "normal" metal-poor stars and measure the trends between [X/Fe] and [Fe/H], as well as the dispersion about the mean trend for this sample. Using this mean trend, we identify objects that are chemically peculiar relative to "normal" stars at the same metallicity. These chemically unusual stars include CEMP-no objects, one star with high [Si/Fe], another with high [Ba/Sr], and one with unusually low [X/Fe] for all elements heavier than Na. The Sr and Ba abundances indicate that there may be two nucleosynthetic processes at lowest metallicity that are distinct from the main r-process. Finally, for many elements, we find a significant trend between [X/Fe] versus Teff which likely reflects non-LTE and/or 3D effects. Such trends demonstrate that care must be exercised when using abundance measurements in metal-poor stars to constrain chemical evolution and/or nucleosynthesis predictions., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: We discuss the carbon-normal and carbon-rich populations of Galactic halo stars having [Fe/H] < -3.0, utilizing chemical abundances from high-resolution, high-S/N model-atmosphere analyses. The C-rich population represents ~28% of stars below [Fe/H] = -3.1, with the present C-rich sample comprising 16 CEMP-no stars, and two others with [Fe/H] ~ -5.5 and uncertain classification. The population is O-rich ([O/Fe] > +1.5); the light elements Na, Mg, and Al are enhanced relative to Fe in half the sample; and for Z > 20 (Ca) there is little evidence for enhancements relative to solar values. These results are best explained in terms of the admixing and processing of material from H-burning and He-burning regions as achieved by nucleosynthesis in zero-heavy-element models in the literature of "mixing and fallback" supernovae (SNe); of rotating, massive and intermediate mass stars; and of Type II SNe with relativistic jets. The available (limited) radial velocities offer little support for the C-rich stars with [Fe/H] < -3.1 being binary. More data are required before one could conclude that binarity is key to an understanding of this population. We suggest that the C-rich and C-normal populations result from two different gas cooling channels in the very early Universe, of material that formed the progenitors of the two populations. The first was cooling by fine-structure line transitions of CII and OI (to form the C-rich population); the second, while not well-defined (perhaps dust-induced cooling?), led to the C-normal group. 9. Chemical Enrichment in the Faintest Galaxies: the Carbon and Iron Abundance Spreads in the Bo��tes I Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy and the Segue 1 System

Abstract: We present an AAOmega spectroscopic study of red giant stars in Bootes I, which is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, and Segue 1, suggested to be either an extremely low-luminosity dwarf galaxy or a star cluster. Our focus is quantifying the mean abundance and abundance dispersion in iron and carbon, and searching for distant radial-velocity members, in these systems. The primary conclusion of our investigation is that the spread of carbon abundance in both Bootes I and Segue 1 is large. For Bootes I, 4 of our 16 velocity members have [C/H] < ~-3.1, while 2 have [C/H] > ~-2.3, suggesting a range of Delta[C/H] ~ 0.8. For Segue 1 there exists a range Delta[C/H] ~ 1.0, including our discovery of a star with [Fe/H] = -3.5 and [C/Fe] = +2.3, which is a radial velocity member at a distance of 4 half-light radii from the system center. The accompanying ranges in iron abundance are Delta[Fe/H] ~ 1.6 for both Bootes I and Segue 1. For [Fe/H] < -3.0, the Galaxy's dwarf galaxy satellites exhibit a dependence of [C/Fe] on [Fe/H] which is very similar to that observed in its halo populations. We find [C/Fe] ~ 0.3 for stars in the dwarf systems that we believe are the counterpart of the Spite et al. (2005) ``unmixed'' giants of the Galactic halo and for which they report [C/Fe] ~ 0.2, and which presumably represents the natal relative abundance of carbon for material with [Fe/H] = -3.0 to -4.0. We confirm the correlation between luminosity and both mean metallicity and abundance dispersion in the Galaxy's dwarf satellites, which extends to at least as faint as Mv = -5. The very low mean metallicity of Segue 1, and the high carbon dispersion in Bootes I, consistent with inhomogeneous chemical evolution in near zero-abundance gas, suggest these ultra-faint systems could be surviving examples of the very first bound systems., 62 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Astrophysical Journal 9 June 2010

Abstract: The structure and kinematics of the recognized stellar components of the Milky Way are explored, based on well-determined atmospheric parameters and kinematic quantities for 32360 calibration stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and its first extension, (SDSS-II), which included the sub-survey SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. Full space motions for a sub-sample of 16920 stars, exploring a local volume within 4 kpc of the Sun, are used to derive velocity ellipsoids for the inner- and outer-halo components of the Galaxy, as well as for the canonical thick-disk and proposed metal-weak thick-disk populations. We first examine the question of whether the data require the presence of at least a two-component halo in order to account for the rotational behavior of likely halo stars in the local volume, and whether more than two components are needed. We also address the question of whether the proposed metal-weak thick disk is kinematically and chemically distinct from the canonical thick disk. In addition, we consider the fractions of each component required to understand the nature of the observed kinematic behavior of the stellar populations of the Galaxy as a function of distance from the plane. Scale lengths and scale heights for the thick-disk and metal-weak thick-disk components are determined. Spatial density profiles for the inner- and outer-halo populations are inferred from a Jeans Theorem analysis. The full set of calibration stars (including those outside the local volume) is used to test for the expected changes in the observed stellar metallicity distribution function with distance above the Galactic plane in-situ, due to the changing contributions from the underlying stellar populations. 11. Boo-1137 - An Extremely Metal-Poor Star in the Ultra-Faint Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Bo��tes I

Abstract: We present high-resolution, high-S/N spectra of an extremely metal- poor giant star Boo-1137 in the "ultra-faint" dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) Bootes I (absolute magnitude Mv ~ -6.3). With [Fe/H] = -3.7, this the most metal-poor star yet identified in an ultra-faint dSph. Comparison of relative abundances, [X/Fe], for some 15 elements with those of the extremely metal-poor giants of the Galactic halo shows Boo-1137 is "normal" with respect to C and N, the odd-Z elements Na and Al, the Fe-peak elements, and the n-capture elements Sr and Ba, in comparison with the bulk of the halo with [Fe/H] < -3.0. The alpha- elements Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti are all higher by Delta[X/Fe] ~ 0.2 than average halo values. Monte-Carlo analysis indicates Delta[alpha/Fe] values this large are expected with probability ~ 0.02. The abundance pattern in Boo-1137 suggests inhomogeneous chemical evolution, consistent with the wide internal spread in Fe abundances we reported earlier. The similarity of most of the Boo-1137 relative abundances with respect to halo values, and the fact that the alpha-elements are all offset by a similar small amount from the halo averages, points to the same underlying galaxy-scale stellar initial mass function, but that Boo-1137 likely originated in a star-forming region where the abundances reflect either poor mixing of supernova (SN) ejecta, or poor sampling of the SN progenitor mass range, or both., 33 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: The chemical compositions of seven Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) turn-off stars are determined from high-resolution spectroscopy. Five of them are selected from the SDSS/SEGUE sample of metal-poor stars. The effective temperatures of these objects are all higher than 6000 K, while their metallicities, parametrized by [Fe/H], are all below -2. Six of our program objects exhibit high abundance ratios of barium ([Ba/H]> +1), suggesting large contributions of the products of former AGB companions via mass transfer across binary systems. Combining our results with previous studies provides a total of 20 CEMP main-sequence turn-off stars for which the abundances of carbon and at least some neutron-capture elements are determined. Inspection of the [C/H] ratios for this sample of CEMP turn-off stars show that they are generally higher than those of CEMP giants; their dispersion in this ratio is also smaller. We take these results to indicate that the carbon-enhanced material provided from the companion AGB star is preserved at the surface of turn-off stars with no significant dilution. In contrast, a large dispersion in the observed [Ba/H] is found for the sample of CEMP turn-off stars, suggesting that the efficiency of the s-process in very metal-poor AGB stars may differ greatly from star to star. 14. Distant Field BHB Stars III: Identification of a probable outer halo stream at Galactocentric distance r = 70 kpc

Abstract: We present VLT-FORS1 spectra of a sample of 34 faint 20.0 < g* < 21.1 A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, with the goal of measuring the velocity dispersion of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the remote Galactic halo, R~80kpc. We show that colour selection with 1.08 < u*-g* < 1.40 and -0.2 < g*-r* < -0.04 minimises contamination of the sample by less luminous blue stragglers. In classifying the stars we confine our attention to the 20 stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio > 15 per Angstrom. Classification produces a sample of eight BHB stars at distances 65-102 kpc from the Sun (mean 80 kpc), which represents the most distant sample of Galactic stars with measured radial velocities. The dispersion of the measured radial component of the velocity with respect to the centre of the Galaxy is 58+-15km/s. This value is anomalously low in comparison with measured values for stars at smaller distances, as well as for satellites at similar distances. Seeking an explanation for the low measured velocity dispersion, further analysis reveals that six of the eight remote BHB stars are plausibly associated with a single orbit. Three previously known outer halo carbon stars also appear to belong to this stream. The velocity dispersion of all nine stars relative to the orbit is only 15+-4 km/s. Abstract: This is the second in a series of papers presenting a new calculation of the mass of the Galaxy based on radial velocities and distances for a sample of faint 16 < B < 21.3 field blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. We present accurate BV CCD photometry and spectra for 142 candidate A-type stars selected from ub_jr photometry of UK Schmidt telescope plates in six high-Galactic-latitude fields. Classification of these candidates produces a sample of 60 BHB stars at distances of 11-52 kpc from the Sun (mean 28 kpc), with heliocentric line-of-sight velocities accurate to 15 km/s, and distance errors < 10%. We provide a summary table listing coordinates and velocities of these stars. The measured dispersion of the radial component of the Galactocentric velocity for this sample is 108+-10 km/s, in agreement with a recent study of the distant halo by Sirko and coworkers. Measurements of the Ca II K line indicate that nearly all the stars are metal-poor with a mean [Fe/H] = -1.8 with dispersion 0.5. Subsequent papers will describe a second survey of BHBs to heliocentric distances 70 < R < 125 kpc and present a new estimate of the mass of the Galaxy., 16 pages, 15 figures. Abstract: High-resolution, high-signal-to-noise ( = 85) spectra have been obtained for five stars -- CD-24:17504, CD-38:245, CS 22172-002, CS 22885-096, and CS 22949-037 -- having [Fe/H] < -3.5 according to previous lower S/N material. LTE model-atmosphere techniques are used to determine [Fe/H] and relative abundances, or their limits, for some 18 elements, and to constrain more tightly the early enrichment history of the Galaxy than is possible based on previous analyses. We compare our results with high-quality higher-abundance literature data for other metal-poor stars and with the canonical Galactic chemical enrichment results of Timmes et al. (1995) and obtain the following basic results: (1) Large supersolar values of [C/Fe] and [N/Fe], not predicted by the canonical models, exist at lowest abundance. For C at least, the result is difficult to attribute to internal mixing effects; (2) We confirm that there is {\it no upward trend} in [$��$/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H], in contradistinction to some reports of the behavior of [O/Fe]; (3) The abundances of aluminum, after correction for non-LTE effects, are in fair accord with theoretical prediction; (4) We confirm earlier results concerning the Fe-peak elements that [Cr/Fe] and [Mn/Fe] decrease at lowest abundance, while [Co/Fe] increases -- behaviors that had not been predicted. We find, however, that [Ni/Fe] does not vary with [Fe/H], and at [Fe/H] ~ -3.7, [Ni/Fe] = +0.08 +/- 0.06. This result appears to be inconsistent with the supernova models of Nakamura et al. (1999) that seek to understand the observed behavior of the Fe-peak elements by varying the position of the model mass cut relative to the Si-burning regions. Abstract: High signal-to-noise integrated spectra of the metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tuc, spanning the H-gamma(HR) and Fe4668 line indices, have been obtained. The combination of these indices has been suggested (Jones & Worthey 1995, ApJ, 446, L31) as the best available mechanism for cleanly separating the age-metallicity degeneracy which hampers the dating of distant, unresolved, elliptical galaxies. For the first time, we apply this technique to a nearby spheroidal system, 47 Tuc, for which independent ages, based upon more established methods, exist. Such an independent test of the technique's suitability has not been attempted before, but is an essential one before its application to more distant, unresolved, stellar populations can be considered valid. Because of its weak series of Balmer lines, relative to model spectra, our results imply a spectroscopic ``age'' for 47 Tuc well in excess of 20 Gyr, at odds with the colour-magnitude diagram age of 14+/-1 Gyr. The derived metal abundance, however, is consistent with the known value. Aki (Editors), Quantification of Earthquakes. Tectonophysics, 93: 337-350. On February 13, 1981 a relatively strong earthquake occurred in the Lake V&tern region in south-central Sweden. The shock had a magnitude of M, = 3.3 and was followed within three weeks by three aftershocks, with magnitudes 0.5 i M, I 1.0. The focal mechanism solution of the main shock indicates reverse faulting with a strike in the N-S or NE-SW direction and a nearly horizontal compressional stress. The aftershocks were too small to yield data for a full mechanism solution, but first motions of P-waves, recorded at two stations, are consistent for the aftershocks. Dynamic source parameters, derived from Pg- and Sg-wave spectra, show similar stress drops for the main shock (2 bar) and the aftershocks (1 bar), while the differences in seismic moment (1.5.1020 resp. 4.10’* dyne cm), fault length (0.7 resp. 0.2 km) and relative displacement (0.15 resp. 0.03 cm) are significant.

Abstract: The genetic make-up of an individual contributes to the susceptibility and response to viral infection. Although environmental, clinical and social factors have a role in the chance of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and the severity of COVID-191, 2, host genetics may also be important. Identifying host-specific genetic factors may reveal biological mechanisms of therapeutic relevance and clarify causal relationships of modifiable environmental risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection and outcomes. We formed a global network of researchers to investigate the role of human genetics in SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity. Here we describe the results of three genome-wide association meta-analyses that consist of up to 49,562 patients with COVID-19 from 46 studies across 19 countries. We report 13 genome-wide significant loci that are associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection or severe manifestations of COVID-19. Several of these loci correspond to previously documented associations to lung or autoimmune and inflammatory diseases3��7. They also represent potentially actionable mechanisms in response to infection. Mendelian randomization analyses support a causal role for smoking and body-mass index for severe COVID-19 although not for type II diabetes. The identification of novel host genetic factors associated with COVID-19 was made possible by the community of human genetics researchers coming together to prioritize the sharing of data, results, resources and analytical frameworks. This working model of international collaboration underscores what is possible for future genetic discoveries in emerging pandemics, or indeed for any complex human disease.

Abstract: To the Editor. —We welcome the cautionary note of Ball et al 1 concerning the use of intravenous (IV) digital subtraction angiography (DSA), but we believe that their conclusion that this procedure is more dangerous than standard angiography is not justified, since their two groups are not comparable. As the authors point out, patients with poor clinical status may be subjected to IV DSA when standard angiography is contraindicated. More patients with angina or ischemic heart disease will therefore be referred for DSA, so, naturally, more patients will experience these symptoms during the procedure. A true comparison is possible only by randomly selecting patients for the two procedures, which would be impractical as well as unethical. We doubt that the permanent neurologic deficit that occurred in one patient one day after IV DSA was related to the procedure. Clinical details are scanty (was a computed tomogram obtained?), and a progressing stroke that occurs so long after the procedure is more likely to be a chance event. Abstract: PhD Thesis presentedfor the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the Australian National University. Abstract: The halo of the Milky Way provides unique elemental abundance and kinematic information on the first objects to form in the Universe, which can be used to tightly con-strain models of galaxy formation and evolution. This thesis presents a wide-ranging analysis of the global structure of the Galactic stellar halo system, comprising the inner and outer halos, through inference of its densityprofile(s) and determination of the kinematic and orbital parameters of its constituent stars (e.g., mean rotational velocity,velocity ellipsoids, eccentricities). The inner-halo component of the MilkyWay dominates the population of halo stars found at distances up to 10-15 kpc from the Galactic Centre, while the outer-halo component dominates in the regions beyond 15-20 kpc. It has been shown that stars in the inner-halo population are non-spherically distributed about the centre of the Galaxy, with an inferred axial ratio on the order of0.6. Inner-halo stars possess generally high orbital eccentricities, and exhibit a modest prograde rotation (between 0 and 50 km s-1) around the centre of the Galaxy (Galactocentric rotational velocity). The metallicity distribution function (MDF) for stars in the inner halo peaks at [Fe/H] = -1.6, with tails extending to higher and lower metallicities. The outer halo, by contrast, comprises stars that exhibit a much more spherical spatial distribution, with an axial ratio0.9 to 1.0. Outer-halo stars cover a wide range of orbital eccentricities, including many with lower eccentricity orbits than found for most stars associated with the inner halo, and exhibit a clear retrograde net rotation (between -40 and-70 km s-1). The MDF of the outer halo peaks at lower metallicity than that of the inner halo, around [Fe/H] = -2.2, and includes a larger fraction of low-metallicity stars than does the MDF of the inner-halo population. The properties of thethick disk andMetal Weak Thick Disk are also investigated. In addition, this studyaddresses the possible chemical distinction between the two halo components in terms of the frequency of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars among their membership. &nbsp
