Search

Speciation traits of paramere, paraproct and aedeagus were applied to find initial split criteria with fine structure analysis in order to prepare diverged trait matrices for delimiting phylogenetic incipient species of unsettled limnephilid taxa in the early stages of reproductive isolation. A brief history is presented how this phenotypic taxonomic tool of the speciation traits was discovered and applied in caddisfly taxonomy. The theoretical basis was elaborated for the phenotypic speciation trait by reviewing several relevant topics in the sciences of taxonomy, molecular genetics and phylogenetics. Perspectives of integrative taxonomy is discussed in context of phenotype versus genotype, immensely complex phenotype versus phenomic challenge, taxonomic impediment versus genetic expedient, taxonomic adaptation of genetic vocabulary versus genetic sophistication and virtualization, New Systematics of Huxley and Mayr versus New Taxonomy of Wheeler. Debates on magic trait, speciation phenotype, speciation trait and super traits are discussed concluding that evolution works with phenotype and why the cryptic species concept is irrelevant. Briefly summarized how speciation traits evolve in sexual selection, through accelerated reproductive isolation with genital evolution through sex-limited speciation traits, including minor sex chromosomes. Why neutral molecular markers are blind compared to the adaptive speciation traits sensitized by fine structure analysis and backed by the potential of high-tech and high-throughput phenotyping and cyber-infrastructure broadly accessible and fed by computable phenotype descriptions. What sort of genetics could really help taxonomy to describe biodiversity of the over 100 million unknown taxa? Collecting new and re-examining old type materials deposited in various collections, the following taxonomic actions were elaborated by speciation traits. Hydropsyche kamenga Oláh & Schefter, new species Fig. 84–88 This species is similar to H. atlas Malicky & Chantaramongkol from Nepal. Hydropsyche kamenga is separated from H. atlas by the presence of an apicoventral setose lobe on segment X that is slender along its length, not broad at basis as in H. atlas. The apicodorsal setose lobe is lower than the median keel of segment IX, not higher as in H. atlas. The membranous lobes and spine structure of the endotheca are different; the bilobed apical membranous process lacks apical spines; and the blunt large terminal surface is echinate. Male. Body and wings brown; forewing membrane brown with pale maculation. Sternum V with short, broad lobe. Maxillary palp formula I-II-(III, IV)-V, segment V as long as segments I–IV together. Dorsum of head dark brown; with 9 setal dark brown setal warts. Swollen setal wart present on proepisternum. Pretarsal claw asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Spur formula 244. Protibia with posteroapical spur as long as anteroapical spur. Wings. Venation typical for the genus. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate. Sc and R, and Cu2 and A separating before costa. Hind wing Sc and R meeting before costa about at crossvein r. Stem of M and Cu1 running closely. Median cell closed. Fork 1 present. Forewing length 9.3 mm. Hind wing length unknown. Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX fused annularly, very short (Fig. 84); median keel triangular, dorsally and laterally granulose; apex tapering in dorsal view (Fig. 85); anterior margin forming arc; dorsum with keel shifted posterad. Antecosta well developed, forming single line narrowing dorsally before margin; with external groove of antecostal suture. Apical lobe on posterolateral margin hyperboloid. Posterior spine row complete, continuous to posterior slope of median keel. Depression between segments IX and X acutely Ushaped. Body of segment X short (Fig. 84); nearly quadrangular in lateral view; rounded quadrangular in dorsal view (Fig. 85). Lateral setose areas(preanal appendages) forming 2 ventral areas; compact on paler background; additional distal setal area present before margin in lateral view, with diffuse, loosely packed group of setae. Apicoventral setose lobe modified into pair of digitiform, slender, processes; ventrad curving in lateral view (Fig. 84); slightly curving laterally in dorsal view (Fig. 85); setae present on dorsal surface. Dorsal, interlobular gap demarcated by apicoventral processes and complex of apicodorsal setose lobes on anterior basis of gap. Apicodorsal setose lobe triangular, elongated vertically, slightly lower than median keel in lateral view (Fig. 84); hearth-shaped in dorsal view (Fig. 85); two-partite in lateral view, with small posterior setose hump; dorsal anterior tip smooth. Smooth cavity on segment X present. Transverse sutures short, darkly pigmented, running ventrad from anterior part of intersegmental depression. Longitudinal sutures encircling ventral part of smooth cavity. Coxopodites long, broad, dorsal margins slightly sinuous at base, slightly dilating distally from mid-length (Fig. 84); nearly straight in ventral view (Fig. 86). Harpagones each with very broad basal plate, distal part slender; slightly curving ventrad in lateral view; almost straight in ventral view (Fig. 86). Phallic apparatus (Fig. 87, 88) simply bent; widening along downwardly curving basal part. Endotheca ending distally in broad, apical, membranous processes with weakly separated, bilobed, blunt echinate apex; without sclerotized spines. Terminal half of endotheca with 3 pairs short, stout spines located dorsolaterally on short lobes (Fig. 87). Basal half of endotheca with 2 pairs large spines (Fig. 87, 88), largest spine pair hooked apically; smaller spine pair without dorsad oriented hook. Small dorsal lobe superimposed to lower complex, housing endophallus of narrow tube; terminates in two-partite sclerite complex around phallotreme. Hydropsyche sangbung Oláh & Johanson, new species Fig. 146–150 Hydropsyche sangbung is morphologically similar to H. lomdom, new species. Hydropsyche sangbung is recognized by its longer segment IX; its apical lobes on segment IX are not sharply triangular; the apical end of the median keel is not located posteriorly of the apical lobes; segment X has different shape, including presence of lateral setose areas located medially, not ventrally; the paired apicodorsal setose lobes are not fingershaped, but hump-like in dorsal view. Finally, the median surface of harpagones is not excavated spoon-like. Male. Body and wings brown with light pubescence. Maxillary palp formula I-II-(III, IV)-V, segment V as long as segments I–IV together. Dorsum of head dark brown, with 9 dark brown setal warts. Swollen setal wart present on proepisternum. Pretarsal claw asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Spur formula 244. Protibiae each with posteroapical spur smaller than anteroapical spur. Wings. Venation typical for the genus. Apical lobe on posterolateral margins triangular, right angled, comprising bulk of segment IX (Fig. 146). Posterior spine row continuous, absent on dorsum (Fig. 146, 147). Depression between segments IX and X long, shallow, with obtuse angle. Body of segment X long, nearly quadrangular in lateral view (Fig. 146); rounded quadrangular in dorsal view. Lateral setose areas (preanal appendages) located medially, fading into loosely packed group of setae. Apicoventral setose lobes modified into pair of digitiform processes, with setae restricted to apex; medium part long, clavate (Fig. 146, 147). Dorsal, interlobular gap long and wide, anteriorly encircled by apicoventral digitiform processes and apicodorsal setose lobe. Apicodorsal setose lobes reduced into pair of small, setose humps at rim of dorsum (Fig. 146). Smooth cavity on segment absent. Short, darkly pigmented, transverse suture running ventrally on each side from bottom of intersegmental depression. Longitudinal suture running below each lateral setose areas, and parallel with ventral margins of segment X. Additional, suture-like, line running parallel above lateral setose areas. Coxopodites long, slender, basally sinuous, slightly dilating distally from half-length (Fig. 146); gently curving mesad in ventral view (Fig. 148). Harpagones slightly narrowing toward half-length, almost parallel sided thereafter, both apices curving upward (Fig. 146) and mesad (Fig. 148); mesal surface not excavated spoon-like. Phallic apparatus simply bent (Fig. 149), broadening along ventrad curving basal section. Phallotheca with concave dorsum (Fig. 149). Phallotremal sclerites absent. Apex of phallotheca with wide, bilobed sclerous ventral lobe, with wide central incision visible in ventral and dorsal view (Fig. 150). Pair of small, slender, anterad orienting dorsolateral membranous lobes present, each with very small apex forming sclerotized, broad spine. Endothecal membrane in dorsal subapical trough combined with sclerous endothecal processes of small, chitinized finger-like lobes. The Caledopsyche belongs to the Hydropsyche genus cluster and is endemic to New Caledonia. It is easily distinguished from Hydropsyche by the small size; the open hind wing median cell, and by the reduced number of forks in the hind wings. The following underived primary characters are present: (1) proepisternal setal warts present; (3) forewing crossvein m-cu located distantly to crossvein cu; (6) spur formula 244. The derived primary characters include (2) preanal appendages reduced to setal wart or surfaces; (4) hind wing median cell open; (5) hind wing crossvein m-cu absent; and (7) hind wing forks reduced (2 and 5 present). The primary genus characters are stable within the genus. A secondary generic character includes symmetrical pretarsal claws present on all legs, both in the male and female. Hydropsyche ekaropa Oláh & Schefter, new species Fig. 207–210 This species is close to H. diktys Malicky & Chantaramongkol from India (Arunachal Pradesh). In H. ekaropa the intersegmental depression is shallow, not deep as in H. diktys; the apicoventral setose processes are both capitate, not narrowing distally; the dorsolateral membranous endothecal process of the phallic apparatus is fused and located anteriorly in the phallotremal sclerite, not posteriorly and free. Male. Body and wings brown. Forewing membrane medium brown with darker maculations in transverse pattern. Sternum V with lobe half as long as segment V. Maxillary palp formula I-(III, IV)-II-V, segment V as long as sum of segments I–IV. Head dorsum light, almost yellow, with 9 pale setal warts. Swollen setal wart present on proepisternum. Pretarsal claws asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Spur formula 244. Protibiae with posteroapical spur equal to anteroapical spur. Wings. Venation typical for the genus. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate. Sc and R, and Cu2 and A separate before costa. Hind wing Sc and R fusing before costa about at crossvein r. Stem of M and Cu1 running closely. Median cell closed. Fork 1 present. Forewing length 7.8 mm. Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX fused annularly, rather short, without apical lobe. Median keel medium long, very broad (Fig. 208); dorsal surface granulose; lateral surfaces flat, slightly excised posteriorly; anterior margin deeply arciform, with very short ventrum and dorsum (Fig. 207). Antecosta well developed, wide before margin, narrowing dorsad and ventrad (Fig. 207). External groove of antecostal suture present. Apical lobe on posterolateral margins robust, broad, nearly triangular (Fig. 207). Posterior spine row widely intermittent, present at median keel and on apical lobes, absent between. Dorsal interlobular gap long, narrow, wider in middle as demarcated by apicoventral lobes. Apicodorsal setose lobe shifted to middle of dorsum, forming narrow, separate, pair of elongating setose ridges. Smooth cavity absent. Each side with transverse suture running from bottom of intersegmental depression to distal rim of dorsum IX (Fig. 207). Short, longitudinal suture running dorsally of compact, preanal appendages on each side. Coxopodites short, broad, dorsal margin slightly sinuous along proximal half of appendages; not exceeding apex of segment X; straight in ventral view (Fig. 209). Harpagones elongated, straight, slightly capitate in lateral and ventral view (Fig. 207, 209). Phallic apparatus simply bent (Fig. 210); basal part curving ventrad, strongly enlarged, extending dorsad and ventrad, forming dominating body of phallic apparatus. Horizontal section of phallotheca with straight ventral margin, with small, basal hump; dorsal margin double-waved, with well developed hump at phallotremal sclerites in lateral view. Heavily pigmented exposed phallotremal sclerites somehow rectangular in dorsal or ventral views; dorsolateral membranous endothecal lobe fused with dorsum; orienting anterad; ending in posterad orienting, short, broad-based spine. Apical part of phallotheca with terminal membranous erectile lobe with deeply invaginated pocket; ending in 2 or 3 small spines; pair of lateral, nearly terminal membranous endothecal lobes present near terminal lobe; partly protruded in holotype. Hydropsyche soinha Oláh & Johanson, new species Fig. 94–98 This species is similar to H. gekilara, new species from Malaysia. The holotype of H. soinha was collected in Vietnam, but a male paratype was also found at the type locality of H. gekilara. Although very similar to H. gekilara, this species is distinct. Hydropsyche soinha has shorter apical lobe of segment IX; the coxopodites are less dilated apically; and the harpagones are flat in sagittal plane, not cylindrical as in H. gekilara. Also, the ventrad curving apicoventral lobes on segment X are not undulating and their apex is not capitate in dorsal view. In the phallothecal terminalia the dorsolateral membranous endothecal process has a slender, less curving terminal spine; and the shape of the sclerotized ventral side of the phallotrema is different; the laterodistal arms are directed posterad in dorsal view, not laterad as in H. gekilara. Hydropsyche soinha has no pattern on the forewing membrane. Male. Body and wings brown. Forewing membrane uniformly brown without pattern. Maxillary palp formula I-II-(III, IV)-V, segment V as long as segments I–IV together. Head dorsum brown, with 9 brown setal warts. Anteromesal setal wart disintegrated into several smaller warts. Swollen setal wart present on proepisternum. Pretarsal claw asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Spur formula 244. Protibia with posteroapical spur smaller than anteroapical spur. Wings. Venation typical for the genus. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate. Sc and R, and Cu2 and A separate before costa. Hind wing Sc and R meeting before costa about at crossvein r. Stem of M and Cu1 situated closely. Median cell closed. Fork 1 present. Forewing length 7.8 mm, hind wing length 6.0 mm. Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX fused annularly. Median keel unusually broad (Fig. 95), with granulose dorsal and lateral surfaces; keel representing entire dorsum of segment IX, shifted posterad. Anterior margin arciform, ending in short ventrum and slightly longer dorsum (Fig. 94). Antecosta well developed, forming dorsally narrowing double line, reaching almost median keel before margin (Fig. 94); represented by well visible external groove of antecostal suture. Apical lobe on posterolateral margins short, triangular (Fig. 94). Posterior spine row intermittent, present on keel slope and apical lobes, absent between. Depression between segments IX and X acutely angled; very short, deep; delineated by distal end of median keel and short smooth area before humps of apicodorsal setose lobes. Body of segment X rounded quadrangular in dorsal and lateral view (Fig. 94, 95). Lateral setose areas (preanal appendages) located ventrally, forming pale, compact, ovoid patch, and setae scattered distally to distal margin of segment. Apicoventral setose lobe modified into pair of long slender processes with apical setae; in lateral view (Fig. 94) curving ventrad, undulating; in dorsal view, almost straight; apex capitate, directed mesally. Dorsal interlobular gap widely ovoid, demarcated by apicoventral setose lobes; anterior base of gap concave. Apicodorsal setose lobe forming pair of mesal, hump-like, short, processes curving anterad, almost reaching intersegmental depression. Smooth cavity on segment X developed into slightly elongate, circular, shallow depression dominating basal half of body of segment X. Shallow cavity encircled anteroventrally by longitudinal sutures. Coxopodites exceeding apex of segment X; weakly sinuous along one-third its length, dilating slightly after mid-length in lateral and ventral view (Fig. 94, 96). Harpagones broad, parallel-sided, weakly curving dorsad in lateral view; in ventral view (Fig. 96) curving mesad at basal one-third. Phallic apparatus (Fig. 97, 98) simply bent; broadening along ventrad curving basal half. Phallotheca with broad hump on ventrad curving corner, concave thereafter. Endophallus forming well pigmented, narrow tube exceeding phallic bend. Phallotremal sclerite ovoid in lateral view (Fig. 97); triangular in dorsal view (Fig. 98); distal end trifid in dorsal view (Fig. 98); median branch minute; lateral branche lobes directed posterad (Fig. 98), with rounded apex; sclerotised spine on tip of dorsolateral membranous endothecal process slender, slightly curving. Apical membranous endothecal process with pair of eversible spine sockets; pair of membranous endothecal processes developed before apex, each armed with 2 minute spines.
