Abstract

International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

The novel monomer, vinyl trifluorobutyrate (VTFBu), when polymerized in a controlled fashion by RAFT/MADIX polymerization with a xanthate transfer agent, yields poly(vinyl ester)s with improved solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide. Abstract

Functional (co)polymers are increasingly developed by ring-opening polymerization of functional cyclic esters and cyclic carbonates for a wide range of applications. Following this trend and aiming to challenge the polymerization of substituted γ-thiolactones, we studied the ring-opening copolymerization of recently developed γ-thiolactones with trimethylene carbonate in order to prepare new poly(carbonate-co-thioester)s with phosphonated or fluorinated pendant groups.

Abstract

The insertion of an increasing amount of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) in statistical copolymers based on thermoresponsive poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) enables one to modulate the properties of the copolymer and those of the corresponding gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-polymer hybrid materials. The incorporation of VP not only affects the growth of AuNPs synthesized in the presence of the polymers (in situ route), but also the properties (stabilization, optical, catalytic...) of preformed nanoparticles coated by these polymers. Hence, at a molar fraction of VP in copolymer less than 40%, it is possible to increase the transition temperature of the hybrid material and improve its catalytic properties compared to counterparts comprising PVP and PVCL homopolymers. The structural difference of the two monomers allows the best compromise between the hydration level and the interaction strength of the copolymer with the surface of gold particles for a chosen application.

Abstract

Dibenzyltrithiocarbonate-mediated RAFT polymer- ization of dimethyl-p-vinylbenzylphosphonate and its copoly- merization with styrene are studied in order to access well- defined statistical and block copolymers containing controlled amounts of dimethylphosphonate groups. NMR and SEC anal- ysis of the (co)polymers confirm the controlled character of the polymerizations. ABA triblock copolymers are treated with TMSiBr/MeOH in order to transform the dimethylphosphonate groups into phosphonic acids while keeping the midchain tri- thiocarbonate group and triblock nature unaffected. Alterna- tively, the combination of trithiocarbonate aminolysis with TMSiBr/MeOH treatment of the same triblock copolymers leads to phosphonic acid-functional diblock copolymer counterparts. Abstract

This article is the first comprehensive review on the study and use of vinyl ester monomers in reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. It covers all the synthetic aspects associated with the definition of precision polymers comprising poly(vinyl ester) building blocks, such as the choice of RAFT agent and reaction conditions in order to progress from simple to complex macromolecular architectures. Although vinyl acetate was by far the most studied monomer of the range, many vinyl esters have been considered in order to tune various polymer properties, in particular, solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). A special emphasis is given to novel poly(vinyl alkylate)s with enhanced solubilities in scCO2, with applications as reactive stabilizers for dispersion polymerization and macromolecular surfactants for CO2 media. Other miscellaneous uses of poly(vinyl ester)s synthesized by RAFT, for instance as a means to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) with controlled characteristics for use in the biomedical area, are also covered.

Abstract

A new dimeric tungsten(III) complex containing amidoand chelating pyridine–alkoxido ligands was synthesized through protonolysis of [W2(NMe2)6] by 2-(2-pyridyl)propan-2-ol and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction and infrared and NMR spectroscopy. Intramolecular exchange processes were studied by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. The compound was grafted onto dehydroxylated silica by protonolysis of an amido–tungsten bond, and the structure of the supported species was investigated by infrared and solid-state (bidimensional) NMR spectroscopy. Abstract

The in situ synthesis of new alkyne metathesis catalysts is described, with particular emphasis on the search for tris-alkoxytungsten-based terminal alkyne metathesis. In that context, hemilabile, ether-containing alkoxy ligands have proved to be suitable and have led to the design and use of a sterically hindered hemilable ligand for the synthesis of a well-defined binuclear, triple-bonded W≡W complex. This complex is shown to be a highly active and selective catalyst precursor for terminal alkyne metathesis, and allows the unprecedented metathesis of phenylacetylene.

International audience; A free N-heterocyclic carbene has been efficiently used for the organocatalysed step-growth polymerisation between aliphatic diisocyanates and diols. Both the nature of the diisocyanate monomer and the order of addition of reactants are critical parameters for the successful synthesis of soluble linear polyurethanes.

Abstract

RAFT/MADIX polymerisation of vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) was controlled in water with an O-ethyl xanthate transfer agent. This represents the first example of reversible deactivation radical polymerisation of a monomer bearing an unprotected phosphonic acid function. Hence, macromolecular engineering of polyphosphonates can now be envisioned by directly polymerising VPA in water.
