Despite the importance of Jupiter and Saturn to Earth's formation and habitability, there has not yet been a comprehensive observational study of how giant exoplanets correlate with the architectural properties of close-in, sub-Neptune sized exoplanets. This is largely because transit surveys are particularly insensitive to planets at orbital separations > 1 AU, and so their census of Jupiter-like planets is incomplete, inhibiting our study of the relationship between Jupiter-like planets and the small planets that do transit. To establish the relationship between small and giant planets, we conducted the Kepler Giant Planet Survey (KGPS). Using W. M. Keck Observatory HIRES, we spent over a decade collecting 2858 RVs (2181 of which are presented here for the first time) of 63 sun-like stars that host 157 transiting planets. We had no prior knowledge of which systems would contain giant planets beyond 1 AU, making this survey unbiased in detected Jovians. In this paper, we announce RV-detected companions to 20 stars from our sample. These include 13 Jovians (0.3 MJ < M sin i < 13 MJ, 1 < a < 10 AU), 7 non-transiting sub-Saturns, and 3 stellar-mass companions. We also present updated masses and densities of 84 transiting planets. The KGPS project leverages the longest-running and most data-rich collection of RVs of the NASA Kepler systems yet, and will provide a basis for addressing whether giant planets help or hinder the growth of sub-Neptune sized and terrestrial planets. Future KGPS papers will examine the relationship between small, transiting planets and their companions., It has come to my attention that there are significant concerns about the author list of this manuscript. Planetary magnetic fields can affect the predicted mass loss rate for close-in planets that experience large amounts of UV irradiation. In this work, we present a method to detect the magnetic fields of close-in exoplanets undergoing atmospheric escape using transit spectroscopy at the 10830 Angstrom line of helium. Motivated by previous work on hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic photoevaporation, we suggest that planets with magnetic fields that are too weak to control the outflow's topology lead to blue-shifted transits due to day-to-night-side flows. In contrast, strong magnetic fields prevent this day-to-night flow, as the gas is forced to follow the magnetic field's roughly dipolar topology. We post-process existing 2D photoevaporation simulations to test this concept, computing synthetic transit profiles in helium. As expected, we find that hydrodynamically dominated outflows lead to blue-shifted transits on the order of the sound speed of the gas. Strong surface magnetic fields lead to unshifted or slightly red-shifted transit profiles. High-resolution observations can distinguish between these profiles; however, eccentricity uncertainties generally mean that we cannot conclusively say velocity shifts are due to the outflow for individual planets. The majority of helium observations are blue-shifted, which could be a tentative indication that close-in planets generally have surface dipole magnetic field strengths $\lesssim 0.1$ gauss. It is now recognized that energetic stellar photon and particle radiation evaporates and erodes planetary atmospheres and controls upper atmospheric chemistry. Key exoplanet host stars will be too faint at X-ray wavelengths for accurate characterization using existing generation and future slated X-ray telescopes. Observation of stellar coronal mass ejections and winds are also beyond current instrumentation. In line with theCommittee on an Exoplanet Science Strategy recognition that holistic observational approaches are needed, we point out here that a full understanding of exoplanet atmospheres, their evolution and determination of habitability requires a powerful high-resolution X-ray imaging and spectroscopic observatory. We perform a comparison between two radiative transfer algorithms commonly employed in hydrodynamical calculations of star formation: grey flux limited diffusion and the hybrid scheme, in addition we compare these algorithms to results from the Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code MOCASSIN. In disc like density structures the hybrid scheme performs significantly better than the FLD method in the optically thin regions, with comparable results in optically thick regions. We consider the evaporation of close in planets by the star's intrinsic EUV and X-ray radiation. We calculate evaporation rates by solving the hydrodynamical problem for planetary evaporation including heating from both X-ray and EUV radiation. We discuss a hydrodynamical model for the dispersal of protoplanetary discs around young, low mass (100) luminosity ratios, the FUV constricts the X-ray flow and may dominate the mass-loss. Simulations of low mass discs with inner holes demonstrate a further stage of disc clearing, which we call `thermal sweeping'. This process occurs when the mid-plane pressure drops to sufficiently low values. At this stage a bound, warm, X-ray heated region becomes sufficiently large and unstable, such that the remaining disc material is cleared on approximately dynamical time-scales. This process significantly reduces the time taken to clear the outer regions of the disc, resulting in an expected transition disc population that will be dominated by accreting objects, as indicated by recent observations., Accepted MNRAS, 25 pages

We have performed hydrodynamic and radiative transfer calculations of a photoevaporating disc around a Herbig Ae/Be star to determine the evolution and observational impact of dust entrained in the wind. We find that the wind selectively entrains grains of different sizes at different radii resulting in a dust population that varies spatially and increases with height above the disc at radii > 10 AU. This variable grain population results in a 'wingnut' morphology to the dust density distribution. We calculate images of this dust distribution at NIR wavelengths that also show a wingnut morphology at all wavelengths considered. We have also considered the contribution that crystalline dust grains will have in the wind and show that a photoevaporative wind can result in a significant crystallinity fraction at all radii, when the disc is edge-on. However, when the disc's photosphere is unobscured, a photoevaporative wind makes no contribution to the observable crystallinity fraction in the disc. Finally, we conclude that the analysis of extended emission around edge-on discs could provide a new and independent method of testing photoevaporation models., 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

(Abridged) We explore the role of X-ray photoevaporation in the evolution and dispersal of viscously evolving T-Tauri discs. We show that the X-ray photoevaporation wind rates scale linearly with X-ray luminosity, such that the observed range of X-ray luminosities for solar-type T-Tauri stars (10e28-10e31 erg\s) gives rise to vigorous disc winds with rates of order 10e-10-10e-7 M_sun/yr. We use the wind solutions from radiation-hydrodynamic models, coupled to a viscous evolution model to construct a population synthesis model so that we may study the physical properties of evolving discs and so-called `transition discs'. Current observations of disc lifetimes and accretion rates can be matched by our model assuming a viscosity parameter alpha = 2.5e-3. Our models confirm that X-rays play a dominant role in the evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary discs giving rise to the observed diverse population of inner hole `transition' sources which include those with massive outer discs, those with gas in their inner holes and those with detectable accretion signatures. To help understand the nature of observed transition discs we present a diagnostic diagram based on accretion rates versus inner hole sizes that demonstrate that, contrary to recent claims, many of the observed accreting and non accreting transition discs can easily be explained by X-ray photoevaporation. Finally, we confirm the conjecture of Drake et al. (2009), that accretion is suppressed by the X-rays through `photoevaporation starved accretion' and predict this effect can give rise to a negative correlation between X-ray luminosity and accretion rate, as reported in the Orion data., Comment: Figure 12 and 13 have been updated.
