Cyanoacrylates such as Histoacryl® have become a popular choice in surgical veterinary practice. However, how Histoacryl® is affecting tissue regeneration and bacterial load in the wound in comparison to poliglecaprone (Monocryl®) traditional suture methods remains to be determined. This work aimed to evaluate how wounded tissue responds to traditional suture with Monocryl® (poliglecaprone 25/4-0) and Histoacryl®, as well as provide evidence of their effects on wound healing in mice. Fortyeight hours after the incisional procedure, wound tissue biopsies were prepared for histological and microbiological analysis. Biopsies were fixed and colored with Mallory's trichrome and hematoxylin-eosin stains. For microbiological assays, biopsies were suspended in tryptic soy broth (TSB) and 1/10 diluted to evaluate the number of CFU in nutrient agar plates. Our results show no differences between Histoacryl® and Monocryl® traditional suture suggesting that both methods could be used to treat wounds in small animals such as rodents.

Resumen Caso clinico Varon de 61 anos con un carcinoma adenoide quistico de glandulas salivales menores de labio inferior presento deterioro unilateral y progresivo de la agudeza visual debido a una metastasis coroidea. Discusion El carcinoma adenoide quistico es un tumor infrecuente con un importante potencial mestastasico. Nuestro paciente presento una metastasis coroidea unilateral. Actualmente hay descritos 8 casos de metastasis coroidea de un carcinoma adenoide quistico de glandulas salivales. Este es el segundo caso descrito de metastasis coroidea con origen en un tumor de glandulas salivales menores y el primero con origen en las glandulas salivales menores del labio inferior.

Background Traditional sutures, staples and surgical tapes are the most common methods used to close wounds in veterinary patients. However, these methods can induce granuloma and fistulas formation, loose sutures and wound leaks. Lately, tissue adhesives such as cyanoacrylates (Histoacryl®) have become popular, this glue can bond tissues such as endothelium, mucosa, skin, blood and bone rapidly. Studies using cyanoacrylates have shown bond strength, bacteriostatic and hemostatic properties. The objective of this work is to compare the use of n-butyl-cyanoacrylate with non-absorbable sutures in tissue regeneration by histology and microbiological analysis in mice. (All procedures were approved by the USFQ Ethics Committee on Animal Experimentation, Doc# 2020-001). Methods Two cuts of 1 cm were perfomed in the dorsal skin of each mouse: one cut was bonded by simple suture (control), and the other with tissue adhesive (Histoacryl). Albino mice were anesthetized before the surgical procedure; analgesics were provided in the water after the surgery to minimize pain. After 48 hours of the surgical procedure, the mice were euthanized and biopsies of 2 cm2 were collected for each cut. Three mice were used for histological evaluation and two for microbiology tests. Assays were repeated 4 times. For microbiology tests, samples were resuspended in 1 ml of TBS culture broth by vortex. Colony forming units (CFU) were evaluated for two dilutions after incubation on Nutrient Agar for 48 hours. For histological analysis, biopsies were fixed with formaldehyde, cut by a microtome (Leyca RM2155) and stained with trichrome, haematoxylin and eosin. Statistical analysis was performed by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests using GraphPad Prism software. Results No differences were found in the microbiological and histological analysis. Conclusions The results showed that there is no significant diference between n-butyl-cyanoacrylate and non-absorbable sutures, no increased risk of microbiological contamination or regenerative improvements were shown.

A 61-year-old man with a lower lip minor salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma, suffered from a unilateral progressive visual acuity loss due to choroidal metastasis.Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare primary tumour with significant metastatic potential. Our patient presented with a unilateral choroidal metastasis. According to the current literature, 8 cases of choroidal metastasis of salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma have been reported. This is the second case reported of choroidal metastasis with origin in a minor salivary gland, and the first one with origin in the minor salivary glands of the lower lip.

Summary A meningeal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, at the lumbar region, in a 15-year-old girl, is presented. This rare neoplasm has to be considered when a meningeal tumour is present in young people.

A monoclonal antibody against the surface marker IOT-10 of natural killer (NK) cells was used to investigate the presence of these cells in a series of twenty intracranial meningiomas. In all of these tumours, IOT-10 positive NK cells were found in small numbers, mainly distributed among the tumor cells. Two recurrent tumors showed a relatively high number of immunostained cells. The data obtained in the present study suggest that a NK-cell-mediated immunological response can occur in meningioma tissue.

A case of subependymoma of the spinal cord in the cervical region is presented. Our experience with this patient and the seven cases of spinal cord subependymoma previously reported show that this tumor predominates in the cervical region and in males (3:1). Although radical removal is considered the rational goal of treatment, larger experience is necessary to know both the rate of growth and prognosis of subependymomas when these tumors arise within the spinal cord.
