An overview of the recent operations and the main results of cesium injection in the Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from Rf plasma (SPIDER) negative ion source are described in this contribution. In experiments without cesium injection, all SPIDER plants were tested to verify the basic expectations on the operational parameters (e.g., electron cooling effectiveness of magnetic filter field) and to determine its operational region. For beam properties, it was shown that the current density varies across the beam in the vertical direction. In preliminary cesium experiments, the expected increase of negative ion current and simultaneous decrease of co-extracted electrons were found, along with the influence of the control parameters (polarization of the plasma electrodes, magnetic filter field) on the SPIDER beam uniformity in the horizontal and vertical directions. It was shown that non-Gaussian tails can be identified in the angular distribution on the plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction. Stray particles, nonhomogeneous beam and large divergence might result in unexpected heat and particle loads over ITER neutral beam injector (NBI) accelerator grids; it is the goal of SPIDER to assess and possibly to identify suitable methods for controlling these beam features. A major shutdown, planned for late 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out scheduled modifications, is outlined. Such improvements are expected to allow SPIDER to pursue the ITER requirements in terms of negative ion current, electron-to-ion ratio, and beam duration.

Re-irradiation with X-rays and particle beams can be used to treat localized recurrence of unresectable head and neck cancer after initial irradiation therapy. However, re-irradiation therapy increases the risk of severe and late sequelae by 4-to 8-fold. It can also result in fatal outcomes, such as rupture of the carotid artery and cerebral necrosis or abscess. A 41-year-old woman was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal. The patient was initially treated with X-ray irradiation. However, the patient underwent re-irradiation with heavy particle beams and neutron rays for a recurrent tumor. The patient developed necrosis of the skull base involving the facial skin and temporal bone 2 months after the last session of re-irradiation therapy. The tissue in the parapharyngeal and masticatory regions also became completely necrotic, resulting in extensive exposure of the brain parenchyma. Although the patient underwent conservative and surgical treatment, necrosis of the tissue progressed, and a large part of the brain was exposed. Approximately 2.5 years later, although the brain is still exposed, the patient is alive without disease. Although the tumor had subsided and long-term survival was achieved, our patient developed serious osteoradionecrosis of the skull base with extensive brain exposure. For patients who are not candidates for surgery, re-irradiation alone is an option, albeit with poor prospects. This approach should be discussed with the patient while balancing the potential survival gain against the burden of treatment and the risk of complications.

The correct quantification of the dose released in charged particle therapy treatments requires the knowledge of the double differential fragmentation cross section of particles composing both the beam and the target. The FragmentatiOn Of Target (FOOT) experiment aims at measuring these cross sections for ions of interest for charged particle therapy applications. This article describes the performance of the time-of-flight (TOF)-wall detector of the experiment. The detector is composed of two layers of 44 cm $\times 2$ cm $\times 3$ mm plastic scintillator bars (20 for each layer), arranged orthogonally and read-out by silicon photomultipliers. The detector is designed to identify the charge of fragments ranging from protons to oxygen ions, with a maximum energy of 700 MeV/u, by measuring the energy released in the scintillators and the TOF with respect to a start counter. In this study, the detector was scanned with carbon ions of energy between 115 and 400 MeV/u and with a 60-MeV proton beam. The measurements show an energy resolution ( $\sigma _{E}/\mu _{E}$ ) between 6% and 4% and a contribution of the detector to the TOF system time resolution between 25 and 20 ps (standard deviation) for carbon ions and between 100 and 80 ps for protons.

The very limited availability of fast neutron facilities, particularly in Europe, for testing of microelectronics has motivated the construction of ChipIr, a new beamline at the ISIS neutron and muon source in the UK. ChipIr has been designed for Single Event Effect testing at the device-level, board-level and system-level which requires a beam of uniform intensity over a selectable area in the order of hundreds of ${\text{cm}}^{2}$ cm 2 . Measurements of the beam uniformity are presented in this paper. A memory chip of interest for space applications, based on SRAMs and developed by ESA for monitoring of radiation fields, has been used for a comparative characterization of the beam. Consistent results have been found, giving confidence on the intensity and shape of the fast neutron spectrum of ChipIr.

Single-photon sources have a variety of applications. One of these is quantum radiometry, which is reported on in this paper in the form of an overview, specifically of the current state of the art in the application of deterministic single photon sources to the calibration of single photon detectors. To optimize single-photon sources for this purpose, extensive research is currently carried out at the European National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), in collaboration with partners from universities. Single-photon sources of different types are currently under investigation, including sources based on defect centres in (nano-)diamonds, on molecules and on semiconductor quantum dots. We will present, summarise, and compare the current results obtained at European NMIs for single-photon sources in terms of photon flux, single-photon purity, and spectral power distribution as well as the results of single-photon detector calibrations carried out with this type of light sources.

The availability of reliable analytical models is essential to the optimal design of energy harvesters and for the prediction of the system behavior. In this paper, we consider a low-input nonlinear system based on a flexible buckled beam forced in a bistable configuration. The harvester has been demonstrated to generate power in the excess of $400~\mu \text{W}$ with the optimal resistive load of 15 $\text{k}\Omega $ and a monotonic input with root-mean-square accelerations of 13.35 m/s2. The power generated is suitable for powering low-power measurement systems or sensor nodes. This paper focuses on a methodology for the modeling of the mechanical dynamical behavior of the device subject to a periodic impulsive signal. A measurement protocol for the evaluation of system’s hidden quantities, the beam’s restoring force, and the beam’s displacement between its stable states is introduced. A second-order behavioral model with a nonlinear term representing the beam’s restoring force has been used. In order to model the nonlinearity, two different potential energy functions have been compared by fitting the models to the experimental data with different constrains, through a performance index evaluating the fitting error.

Quantum theory is the foundation of modern physics. Some of its basic principles, such as Born's rule, however, are based on postulates which require experimental testing. Any deviation from Born's rule would result in higher-order interference and can thus be tested in an experiment. Here, we report on such a test with a quantum light source based on a color center in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coupled to a microcavity. Our room temperature photon source features a narrow linewidth, high efficiency, high purity, and on-demand single-photon generation. With the single-photon source we can increase the interferometric sensitivity of our three-path interferometer compared to conventional laser-based light sources by fully suppressing the detector nonlinearity. We thereby obtain a tight bound on the third-order interference term of $3.96(523)\times 10^{-4}$. We also measure an interference visibility of 98.58% for our single-photons emitted from hBN at room temperature, which provides a promising route for using the hBN platform as light source for phase-encoding schemes in quantum key distribution.

It has long been known that the ellipse normally used to model the phase space extension of a beam in linear dynamics may be represented by a complex number which can be interpreted similar to a complex impedance in electrical circuits, so that classical electrical methods might be used for the design of such beam transport lines. However, this method has never been fully developed, and only the transport transformation of single particular elements, like drift spaces or quadrupoles, has been presented in the past. In this article, we complete the complex formalism of linear beam dynamics by obtaining a general differential equation and solving it, to show that the general transformation of a linear beam line is a complex Moebius transformation. This result opens the possibility of studying the effect of the beam line on complete regions of the complex plane and not only on a single point. Taking advantage of this capability of the formalism, we also obtain an important result in the theory of the transport through a periodic line, proving that the invariant points of the transformation are only a special case of a more general structure of the solution, which are the invariant circles of the one-period transformation. International audience; At the CERN LHC experiments, several gaseous detector technologies are operated in gas recirculation mode to lower operational costs and gas emissions. In the next years, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technologies will be largely implemented in the LHC experiments, with dedicated gas systems, and they will experience a significantly increased background radiation rate, especially in the HL-LHC phase. It is therefore fundamental to study MPGD operated with LHC gas systems, especially under gas recirculation, to be able to guarantee their safe long-term operation. In this context, the performance of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors operated in gas recirculating systems have been studied at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++), which provides an intense gamma irradiation along with a Muon beam from the SPS accelerator. Triple-GEM detectors performance has been studied in relation to operation stability during long-term high rate irradiation, as well as in terms of Muon detection efficiency with different gamma background rates. Both tests were realized with various gas mixtures and gas system conditions. A complete overview of the results obtained at the GIF++is presented, showing the successful operation of Triple-GEM detectors during long-term high-rate irradiation and good Muon detection efficiency in HL-like background radiation.

International audience; The pion resonance in the nuclear reaction cross section is seen to have a direct impact on the single-event effect (SEE) cross section of modern electronic devices. This was experimentally observed for single-event upsets and single-event latchup. Rectangular parallelepiped (RPP) models built to fit proton data confirm the existence of the pion SEE cross-section resonance. The impact on current radiation hardness assurance (RHA) soft error rate (SER) predictions is, however, minimal for the accelerator environment since this is dominated by high neutron fluxes. The resonance is not seen to have a major impact on the high-energy hadron equivalence approximation established for testing in mixed-field facilities.

In this work, we have investigated the crystalline-size dependence of optical absorption and photoluminescence emission of CH3NH3PbI3 films, which is necessary to identify the potential practical applications of the gadgets based on perovskite films. This study was carried out at low temperatures to minimize the extra complexity induced by thermal effects. The purpose was to clarify the origin of the dual emission peak previously reported in the literature. We found that the grain size is responsible for the appearance or disappearance of this dual emission on CH3NH3PbI3 at low temperatures, whereas we have inferred that the thickness of the perovskite layer is a much more important factor than the size of the grains in the location of the energy of the band gap. Moreover, the increase in the grain size allows slowing down the phase transition. Additionally, we evidence a decrease in the effective Rydberg energy of the exciton in several samples, from 23–25 meV at 7 K to 12–13 meV at 165 K, by fitting to Elliott–Toyozawa theory. We have extracted other important physical parameters of perovskites from the photoluminescence-data deconvolution, such as the band gap, exciton–phonon interaction, and exciton binding energy. A new phase transition at 45.5 K was determined by the temperature dependence of full width at half-maximum and the integrated intensity of the photoluminescence, and it was confirmed by the radiative lifetime obtained from the time-resolved photoluminescence emission by means of time-correlated single-photon counting at different temperatures, excitation fluencies, and emission energies.

Engineers usually test multiple printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuits (ICs) in the neutron beam to improve the error statistics. The attenuation of an atmospheric-like neutron spectrum by materials commonly used in PCBs is evaluated experimentally and with simulations of the neutron transport. Measurements were performed during neutron irradiation experiments of multiple boards using a beam monitor to correlate simulations with experimental results.

Heating and current drive (H&CD) systems are being investigated for a demonstration fusion power plant DEMO to deliver net electricity for the grid around 2050. Compared to ITER, which has to show the generation of 500-MW thermal power, the target of DEMO is the successful production of 300 to 500 MW electrical power to the grid and to aim for a self-sufficient tritium fuel cycle. Three H&CD systems are under development for DEMO in Europe, the electron cyclotron (EC) system, the neutral beam injection (NBI) system, and the ion cyclotron system. Based on present studies for plasma ramp-up, ramp-down, and flat top phases, to be further validated in more detailed simulations, the assumed total launched power needed from the H&CD system in DEMO is in the range of 50-100 MW, to be provided for plasma heating and control. This paper describes the design and Research and Development status of selected H&CD systems, considered for their deployment in the EU DEMO. It was always considered that different H&CD configurations and design variants will have an impact on the performances for the whole fusion plant. It shall be noted that the basis for the H&CD integrated design and system development is the actual version of the European fusion electricity roadmap. The project also elaborates on H&CD efficiency improvements which will reduce the recirculating power fraction in the future fusion power plants. Different studies under investigation will be discussed such as for NBI the photoneutralization and for EC novel concepts for gyrotron multistage-depressed collector.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have recently emerged as a leading platform to generate highly indistinguishable photons efficiently, and this work addresses the timely question of how good these solid-state sources can ultimately be. We establish the crucial role of lattice relaxation in these systems in giving rise to trade-offs between indistinguishability and efficiency. We analyse the two source architectures most commonly employed: a QD embedded in a waveguide and a QD coupled to an optical cavity. For waveguides, we demonstrate that the broadband Purcell effect results in a simple inverse relationship, in which indistinguishability and efficiency cannot be simultaneously increased. For cavities, the frequency selectivity of the Purcell enhancement results in a more subtle trade-off, in which indistinguishability and efficiency can be increased simultaneously, although not arbitrarily, which limits a source with near-unity indistinguishability (>99%) to an efficiency of approximately 96% for realistic parameters. The efficiency and indistinguishability of single-photon emission by a quantum dot optically coupled to a microcavity and to a waveguide are theoretically investigated. Owing to unavoidable phonon sideband, they can never reach 100% simultaneously.

The methods used to perform the relative gain calibration, to evaluate the geometrical alignment and the corresponding correction of the absolute energy scale, to obtain the nonlinearity correction coefficients and finally, to calculate the time-dependent calibration corrections, are discussed and illustrated by the PHOS performance in proton-proton (pp) collisions at root s = 13 TeV. Well-controlled yet practical systems that give access to interference effects are critical for established and new functionalities in ultrafast signal processing, quantum photonics, optical coherence characterization, etc. Optical fiber systems constitute a central platform for such technologies. However, harnessing optical interference in a versatile and stable manner remains technologically costly and challenging. Here, degrees of freedom native to optical fibers, i.e., polarization and frequency, are used to demonstrate an easily deployable technique for the retrieval and stabilization of the relative phase in fiber interferometric systems. Purpose In this work, the LET-dependence of the response of synthetic diamond detectors is investigated in different particle beams. Method Measurements were performed in three nonmodulated particle beams (proton, carbon, and oxygen). The response of five synthetic diamond detectors was compared to the response of a Markus or an Advanced Markus ionization chamber. The synthetic diamond detectors were used with their axis parallel to the beam axis and without any bias voltage. A high bias voltage was applied to the ionization chambers, to minimize ion recombination, for which no correction is applied (+300 V and +400 V were applied to the Markus and Advanced Markus ionization chambers respectively). Results The ratio between the normalized response of the synthetic diamond detectors and the normalized response of the ionization chamber shows an under-response of the synthetic diamond detectors in carbon and oxygen ion beams. No under-response of the synthetic diamond detectors is observed in protons. For each beam, combining results obtained for the five synthetic diamond detectors and considering the uncertainties, a linear fit of the ratio between the normalized response of the synthetic diamond detectors and the normalized response of the ionization chamber is determined. The response of the synthetic diamond detectors can be described as a function of LET as (−6.22E-4 ± 3.17E-3) • LET + (0.99 ± 0.01) in proton beam, (−2.51E-4 ± 1.18E-4) • LET + (1.01 ± 0.01) in carbon ion beam and (−2.77E-4 ± 0.56E-4) • LET + (1.03 ± 0.01) in oxygen ion beam. Combining results obtained in carbon and oxygen ion beams, a LET dependence of about 0.026% (±0.013%) per keV/μm is estimated. Conclusions Due to the high LET value, a LET dependence of the response of the synthetic diamond detector was observed in the case of carbon and oxygen beams. The effect was found to be negligible in proton beams, due to the low LET value. The under-response of the synthetic diamond detector may result from the recombination of electron/hole in the thin synthetic diamond layer, due to the high LET-values. More investigations are required to confirm this assumption.In this work, the LET-dependence of the response of synthetic diamond detectors is investigated in different particle beams.

Fast control and data acquisition are required in the ion source test bed of the ITER neutral beam test facility, referred to as SPIDER. Fast control will drive the operation of the power supply systems with particular reference to special asynchronous events, such as the breakdowns. These are short-circuits among grids or between grids and vessel that can occur repeatedly during beam operation. They are normal events and, as such, they will be managed by the fast control system. Cycle time associated to such fast control is down to hundreds of microseconds. Fast data acquisition is required when breakdowns occur. Event-driven data acquisition is triggered in real time by fast control at the occurrence of each breakdown. Pre- and post-event samples are acquired, allowing capturing information on transient phenomena in a whole time-window centered on the event. Sampling rate of event-driven data acquisition is up to 5 MS/s. Fast data acquisition may also be independent of breakdowns as in the case of the cavity ring-down spectroscopy where data chunks are acquired at 100 MS/s in bursts of 1.5 ms every 100 ms and are processed in real time to produce derived measurements. The paper after the description of the SPIDER fast control and data acquisition application will report the system design based on commercially available hardware and the MARTe and MDSplus software frameworks. The results obtained by running a full prototype of the fast control and data acquisition system are also reported and discussed. They demonstrate that all SPIDER fast control and data acquisition requirements can be met in the prototype solution.

Dynamics of an ensemble of particles is often studied by tracking a large number of test particles from a chosen initial state to an adequately defined final state. Random distributions of particles over considered parameters are frequently used to describe an initial state of studied ensemble. Randomness of input data insures that there is no overlapping in test particles visualization; however, it hides the dependencies between various input and output parameters. If non-random, uniformly distributed input data is used, relationships between the input and output variables are revealed. Further, mapping of such an input into its output together with an appropriate interpolation scheme contains description of an output corresponding to any desired distribution of input data. A mapping of non-random uniformly distributed input into its output is combined with n -dimensional linear interpolation into a method for studying dynamics of an ensemble of particles. Advantages and efficiency of the method are illustrated using an ion beam interaction with two devices: the four parallel, equally spaced finite wires and the spiral inflector. The method is applicable if interactions between particles within an ensemble are negligible compared to other forces involved.

Storing information encoded in light is critical for realizing optical buffers for all-optical signal processing and quantum memories for quantum information processing. These proposals require efficient interaction between atoms and a well-defined optical mode. Photonic crystal fibres can enhance light-matter interactions and have engendered a broad range of nonlinear effects; however, the storage of light has proven elusive. Here, we report the first demonstration of an optical memory in a hollow-core photonic crystal fibre. We store gigahertz-bandwidth light in the hyperfine coherence of caesium atoms at room temperature using a far-detuned Raman interaction. We demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio of 2.6:1 at the single-photon level and a memory efficiency of 27 ± 1%. Our results demonstrate the potential of a room-temperature fibre-integrated optical memory for implementing local nodes of quantum information networks. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited. We study the preparation of heralded single-photon states using dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing. The dual-pump configuration, which in our case employs cross-polarized pumps, allows for a gradual variation of the nonlinear interaction strength enabled by a birefringence-induced walk-off between the pump pulses. The scheme enables the preparation of highly pure heralded single-photon states, and proves to be extremely robust against the effect of nonlinear phase modulation at the required photon-pair production rates.

During the past century, the electromagnetic field momentum in material media has been under debate in the Abraham-Minkowski controversy as convincing arguments have been advanced in favor of both the Abraham and Minkowski forms of photon momentum. Here we study the photon momentum and optical forces in cavity structures in the cases of dynamical and steady-state fields. In the description of the single-photon transmission process, we use a field-kinetic one-photon theory. Our model suggests that in the medium photons couple with the induced atomic dipoles forming polariton quasiparticles with the Minkowski form momentum. The Abraham momentum can be associated to the electromagnetic field part of the coupled polariton state. The polariton with the Minkowski momentum is shown to obey the uniform center of mass of energy motion that has previously been interpreted to support only the Abraham momentum. When describing the steady-state nonequilibrium field distributions we use the recently developed quantized fluctuational electrodynamics (QFED) formalism. While allowing detailed studies of light propagation and quantum field fluctuations in interfering structures, our methods also provide practical tools for modeling optical energy transfer and the formation of thermal balance in nanodevices as well as studying electromagnetic forces in optomechanical devices.

A scheme of a neutral beam injector (NBI), based on electrostatic acceleration and magneto-static deflection of negative ions, is proposed and analyzed in terms of feasibility and performance. The scheme is based on the deflection of a high energy (2 MeV) and high current (some tens of amperes) negative ion beam by a large magnetic deflector placed between the Beam Source (BS) and the neutralizer. This scheme has the potential of solving two key issues, which at present limit the applicability of a NBI to a fusion reactor: the maximum achievable acceleration voltage and the direct exposure of the BS to the flux of neutrons and radiation coming from the fusion reactor. In order to solve these two issues, a magnetic deflector is proposed to screen the BS from direct exposure to radiation and neutrons so that the voltage insulation between the electrostatic accelerator and the grounded vessel can be enhanced by using compressed SF6 instead of vacuum so that the negative ions can be accelerated at energies higher than 1 MeV. By solving the beam transport with different magnetic deflector properties, an optimum scheme has been found which is shown to be effective to guarantee both the steering effect and the beam aiming.

We have measured the reaction of O + H3+ forming OH+ and H2O+. This is one of the key gas-phase astrochemical processes initiating the formation of water molecules in dense molecular clouds. For this work, we have used a novel merged fast-beams apparatus which overlaps a beam of H3+ onto a beam of ground-term neutral O. Here, we present cross section data for forming OH+ and H2O+ at relative energies from \approx 3.5 meV to \approx 15.5 and 0.13 eV, respectively. Measurements were performed for statistically populated O(3PJ) in the ground term reacting with hot H3+ (with an internal temperature of \approx 2500-3000 K). From these data, we have derived rate coefficients for translational temperatures from \approx 25 K to \approx 10^5 and 10^3 K, respectively. Using state-of-the-art theoretical methods as a guide, we have converted these results to a thermal rate coefficient for forming either OH+ or H2O+, thereby accounting for the temperature dependence of the O fine-structure levels. Our results are in good agreement with two independent flowing afterglow measurements at a temperature of \approx 300 K, and with a corresponding level of H3+ internal excitation. This good agreement strongly suggests that the internal excitation of the H3+ does not play a significant role in this reaction. The Langevin rate coefficient is in reasonable agreement with the experimental results at 10 K but a factor of \approx 2 larger at 300 K. The two published classical trajectory studies using quantum mechanical potential energy surfaces lie a factor of \approx 1.5 above our experimental results over this 10-300 K range., 43 pages, 11 figures. The aim of this paper is to analyze a low order finite element method for a stiffened plate. The plate is modeled by Reissner-Mindlin equations and the stiffener by Timoshenko beams equations. The resulting problem is shown to be well posed. In the case of concentric stiffeners it decouples into two problems, one for the in-plane plate deformation and the other for the bending of the plate. The analysis and discretization of the first one is straightforward. The second one is shown to have a solution bounded above and below independently of the thickness of the plate. A discretization based on DL3 finite elements combined with ad-hoc elements for the stiffener is proposed. Optimal order error estimates are proved for displacements, rotations and shear stresses for the plate and the stiffener. Numerical tests are reported in order to assess the performance of the method. These numerical computations demonstrate that the error estimates are independent of the thickness, providing a numerical evidence that the method is locking-free. Fil: Duran, Ricardo Guillermo. We report on a free-electron-driven light source with a controllable direction of emission. The source comprises a microscopic array of plasmonic surface-relief holographic domains, each tailored to direct electron-induced light emission at a selected wavelength into a collimated beam in a prescribed direction. The direction-division multiplexed source is tested by driving it with the 30 kV electron beam of a scanning electron microscope: light emission, at a wavelength of 800 nm in the present case, is switched among different output angles by micron-scale repositioning of the electron injection point among domains. Such sources, with directional switching/tuning possible at picosecond timescales, may be applied to field-emission and surface-conduction electron-emission display technologies, optical multiplexing, and charged-particle-beam position metrology. The electrochromic and photocatalytic properties of vanadium-doped tungsten trioxide thin films prepared at room temperature (300 K) by the electron beam evaporation technique are reported in this paper. The vanadium to tungsten ratio (V/W) in these films are 0.003, 0.019, 0.029 and 0.047. The optical band gap of the vanadium-doped tungsten oxide (WO3) thin film initially increases from 3.16 to 3.28 eV for V/W ratio 0.003 then decreases to 3.15 eV for V/W ratio 0.047. These vanadium-doped films switch between neutral gray and transparent states. The coloration efficiency (CE) decreases from 82 cm2 C-1 (pure WO3) to 27 cm2 C-1 for the film containing V/W ratio 0.047. The photocatalytic activity has enhanced with vanadium doping and maximum activity of 15% (percentage change in optical density of methylene blue due to photo degradation) has been observed for the film containing V/W ratio of 0.019. The Kelvin probe measurements show that the work function of pure WO3 films is 4.07 eV and vanadium doping initially increases the work function to 4.19 eV for V/W ratio 0.019 and then decreases it to 3.97 eV for film with V/W ratio 0.047. � 2008 Elsevier B.V. The precise alignment of this complex device is a formidable challenge, and only achievable with a significant extension of the technologies routinely used for tracking detectors in the past. This article describes the full-scale alignment procedure as it is used during LHC operations. Among the specific features of the method are the simultaneous determination of up to 200 000 alignment parameters with tracks, the measurement of individual sensor curvature parameters, the control of systematic misalignment effects, and the implementation of the whole procedure in a multiprocessor environment for high execution speed. International audience; Monitoring mixed-field radiation environments is of great importance especially for facilities hosting large particle accelerators. Such facilities make use of monitors that are usually composed of different sensors, each one contributing to the evaluation of the radiation levels throughout the radiation harsh zones and also the effects over electronic devices. In this paper, we characterize our custom SRAM based monitors according to the results we retrieved by irradiating our sensors at the H4IRRAD test facility of CERN. Based on the collected upsets of the SRAMs and also using the given particle fluence of the environment in which these devices were exposed to, we were able to monitor the effectiveness of the monitor with respect to the number of sensing devices (memories), the time and the particle fluence.

In high power neutral beams for fusion, beam uniformity is an important figure of merit. Knowing the transverse power profile is essential during the initial phases of beam source operation, such as those expected for the ITER heating neutral beam (HNB) test facility. To measure it a diagnostic technique is proposed, based on the collection of secondary electrons generated by beam-surface and beam-gas interactions, by an array of positively biased collectors placed behind the calorimeter tubes. This measurement showed in the IREK test stand good proportionality to the primary beam current. To investigate the diagnostic performances in different conditions, we developed a numerical model of secondary electron emission, induced by beam particle impact on the copper tubes, and reproducing the cascade of secondary emission caused by successive electron impacts. The model is first validated against IREK measurements. It is then applied to the HNB case, to assess the locality of the measurement, the proportionality to the beam current density, and the influence of beam plasma.

Since the first feasibility studies of active beam spectroscopy on ITER in 1995 the proposed diagnostic has developed into a well advanced and mature system. Substantial progress has been achieved on the physics side including comprehensive performance studies based on an advanced predictive code, which simulates active and passive features of the expected spectral ranges. The simulation has enabled detailed specifications for an optimized instrumentation and has helped to specify suitable diagnostic neutral beam parameters. Four ITER partners share presently the task of developing a suite of ITER active beam diagnostics. which make use of the two 0.5 MeV/amu 18 MW heating neutral beams and a dedicated 0.1 MeV/amu, 3.6 MW diagnostic neutral beam. The IN ITER team is responsible for the DNB development and also for beam physics related aspects of the diagnostic. The RF will be responsible for edge CXRS system covering the outer region of the plasma (1 > r/a > 0.4) using an equatorial observation port, and the EU will develop the core CXRS system for the very core (0 < r/a < 0.7) using a top observation port. Thus optimum radial resolution is ensured for each system with better than a/30 resolution. Finally, the US will develop a dedicated MSE system making use of the HNBs and two equatorial ports. With appropriate modification, these systems could also potentially provide information on alpha particle slowing-down features.. On the engineering side, comprehensive preparations were made involving the development of an observation periscope, a neutron labyrinth optical system and design studies for remote maintenance including the exchange of the first mirror assembly, a critical issue for the operation of the CXRS diagnostic in the harsh ITER environment. Additionally, an essential change of the orientation of the DNB injection angle and specification of suitable blanket aperture has been made to avoid trapped particle damage to the first wall. Estimation of Laves phase was done in alloy 718 electron beam welds prepared with and without beam oscillation. As relatively higher heat input was used in preparing beam oscillated welds, the full benefits of beam oscillation in producing welds with lesser amount of niobium segregation and lower amount of Laves phase could not be realized. � Carl Hanser Verlag.

The efficiency of these procedures could be affected by dynamic imperfections during their application. In this paper we study the resulting emittance growth.

International audience; The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment to be installed on the International Space Station will be equipped with a Proximity Focusing Ring Imaging Cerenkov detector for ion identification. A prototype (2nd generation) has been constructed, which performances have been evaluated both with Cosmic Ray particles and beam ions. A test bench (PMT and Front End Electronics selection) was developed for the testing of the photodetector modules of the flight model. It is described in this contribution

Electron storage rings as synchrotron radiation sources are presently the most powerful x-ray sources in the energy range between 0.53 keV, the "water window" for microscopy of biological molecules, and 33.16 keV, the K-edge of iodine for a possible coronary angiography. However, with the advent of modern electron accelerators delivering high current low emittance electron beams with energies up to a few GeV it was realized that they may present also attractive sources of intense x rays. In this contribution we report on the investigation of resonant transition radiation in the x-ray region (XTR), and parametric x-ray radiation (PXR) as such x-ray sources. The experiments have been performed with the low emittance (3 it nm rad) 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI.... DFG (SFB 201) and BMFT under contract MZ 565. Carrier dynamics have been investigated in beta-Ga2O3 nanowires (NWs) grown by the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism, using ultrashort transient absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with time-correlating single photon counting photoluminescence. UV femtosecond pulse excitation has been utilized to generate nonequilibrium carrier distributions near the band edge of the NWs and nondegenerate pump-probe techniques have been employed to follow carrier relaxation through the defect related states located within the band gap of the NW semiconductor. Relaxation of the photogenerated carriers through these states appears to be biexponential with a fast component on the order of 3-5 ps and the slower component around 40-90 ps depending on the states being probed. Transient absorption intensity measurements reveal that recombination mechanisms such as Auger and bimolecular become contributing factors to the relaxation dynamics for absorbed fluences larger than 90 mu J/cm(2). In the low fluence regime, time-correlated single photon counting photoluminescence measurements revealed a nonradiative relaxation mechanism with time constants ranging from 0.6-1 ns and a radiative relaxation with a time constant of approximately 4 ns. In some cases, an increase in the incident beam current will be exactly compensated by an increase in the incident beam area, so that the current density at the aperture remains unchanged. When this occurs, the transmitted beam current becomes independent of changes in the incident beam current, providing a passive means for suppressing current fluctuations in the beam. In this article, a key requirement for the existence of this condition is derived. This requirement is shown to be fulfilled in the case of an idealized uniform focusing channel in the small-signal limit, but to be violated when the current fluctuations are not small. Even in this case, the apertured transport system retains the ability to suppress--but not totally eliminate--fluctuations in the transmitted beam current for a wide range of incident beam currents.

Such a laser emits short pulses of multimode broad-band radiation. If the repetition time of the electron pulses is short compared to the round-trip time of an optical pulse in the resonator cavity, then phase locking between successive optical pulses can be induced by an intracavity interferometric device. This causes a reduction of the number of active cavity modes, and leads to a significant increase in the power per mode. External selection of a single mode with reasonable power then becomes possible. The feasibility of the phase-locking procedure has been tested by simulation of the optical pulse evolution in a short-pulse free-electron laser, using a model based on the self-consistent solution of the equations of motion for the electrons and the wave equation driven by single-particle currents. The simulations show that a high degree of coherence between successive pulses can be induced by a low-finesse etalon. Not Available

L'intensité du faisceau de particules alpha est mesurée par activation d'une feuille d'or grâce à la réaction « moniteur » 197Au(α, αn) 196Au. Dans ce but, la section efficace absolue de cette réaction a été mesurée entre 90 et 160 MeV. La forte valeur de cette section efficace (100 mb env.) et la faible pente de la fonction d'excitation σ = f(E) rendent particulièrement commode l'utilisation de ce moniteur. Dans le cas où il existe un danger de pollution du faisceau de particules alpha par des deutons, on donne une méthode permettant de mesurer l'intensité de ce faisceau parasite de deutons en arrêtant totalement les particules alpha grâce à un ralentisseur à la sortie duquel le flux de deutons est monitoré par la réaction 197Au(d, 2n)197mHg.

The radiation appears only at harmonics of the frequency of periodic electron bunches. Angular distribution power measurements are presented for frequencies of 2.86, 5.71, 8.57, and 11.42 GHz corresponding to the fundamental and the first three harmonics of an S-band rf linac.

X-ray Çerenkov radiation can be generated by electrons incident on thin foils. For grazing incidence the Çerenkov radiation intensity can be more than a decade greater than for perpendicular incidence. International audience; Beam instabilities cover a wide range of effects in particle accelerators and they have been the subjects of intense research for several decades. As the machines performance was pushed new mechanisms were revealed and nowadays the challenge consists in studying the interplays between all these intricate phenomena, as it is very often not possible to treat the different effects separately. The aim of this paper is to review the main mechanisms, discussing in particular the recent developments of beam instability theories and simulations.

NbTi-based Rutherford cables are used in the coils of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) magnets. These cables are designed to operate with currents up to 13 kA at temperatures of 1.9 K. Beam losses can locally heat the superconducting cables above the critical temperature and cause a transition to the normal conducting state (quenching). The quench limit, i.e., the energy needed for this transition, is studied to determine the maximum beam intensities and luminosity reach of the LHC. The amount of energy deposited in the coil cannot be measured directly. Therefore, Geant4 simulations are used to correlate the deposited energy with the signal from secondary particles detected outside the magnet cryostat by ionization chambers. An orbital bump technique is used to induce controlled beam losses and provoke a quench. The energy deposition is analyzed in terms of various beam loss patterns and beam energies. The validation of the heat transfer code is presented. The development of the resistive zone is estimated and compared with the voltage measurements over the coils.
