Abstract

The HASPIDE (Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon PIxels DEtectors) project aims at the development of thin hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) detectors on flexible substrates (mostly Polyimide) for beam monitoring, neutron detection and space applications. Since a-Si:H is a material with superior radiation hardness, the benefit for the above-mentioned applications can be appreciated mostly in radiation harsh environments. Furthermore, the possibility to deposit this material on flexible substrates like Polyimide (PI), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) facilitates the usage of these detectors in medical dosimetry, beam flux and beam profile measurements. Particularly interesting is its use when positioned directly on the flange of the vacuum-to-air separation interface in a beam line, as well as other applications where a thin self-standing radiation flux detector is envisaged. In this paper, the HASPIDE project will be described and some preliminary results on PI and glass substrates will be reported.

6. NEXAFS experiment and multiple scattering calculations on KO2: Effects on the p resonance in the solid phase

Abstract

The high-energy resolution O K-edge absorption near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectrum has been measured for in situ prepared potassium superoxide. The experimental data have been analyzed in detail by multiple scattering calculations using self-consistent field potentials. In particular, the so-called p resonance at the rising edge, which presents a double-peak structure, has been totally resolved and reproduced by the calculations. This analysis indicates that the grown material is arranged in a KO2 structure with an O-O distance between 1.31 and 1.34 Å. Moreover, the calculation demonstrates both a complete ionic character of the bound between the O2anion and K atoms and a strong interaction between the anion and solid-state matrices

Abstract

We investigate the electronic structure of Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$ using photoemission spectroscopy. Core level spectra establish an electronic phase separation at the surface, leading to distinctly different surface electronic structure compared to the bulk. Analysis of the photoemission spectra of this system allowed us to separate the surface and bulk contributions. These results help us to understand properties related to two vastly differing energy-scales, namely the low energy-scale of thermal excitations (~$k_{B}T$) and the high-energy scale related to Coulomb and other electronic interactions., Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures. Abstract

Direct comparison of scanning tunneling microscopy and high resolution core level photo-emission experiments provides a rationale for the mechanism of formation of a two dimensional (2D) binary alloy (1/3 mono-layer (ML) Sn(1- x)Six/Si(111)-\sqrt3X\sqrt3R30). In contrast with recent theoretical predictions, the pure metal surface (x=0) results partitioned into two classes (2/9 ML and 1/9 ML) of ad-atoms occupying non-equivalent T4 sites. During the formation of the alloy, Si ad-atoms preferably occupy the majority type adsorption site. This peculiar substitution mechanism leads to a mutual arrangement of ad-atoms which is not random even at room temperature, but shows the typical short range order universally observed in 2D and quasi 2D binary alloys, Comment: pdf only- 5 pages 3 figures. submitted to Phys. Abstract

We examine the predictability of private and public real estate returns using recursive, out-of-sample, linear and Markov switching models, employing a rich set of predictor variables. We find considerable improved predictive power compared to simple regression models, especially at the intermediate horizon. Next, we test whether such improved forecasting accuracy translates into a positive risk-adjusted out-of-sample performance by performing a recursive mean-variance portfolio allocation analysis. We observe significant improvements in realized Sharpe ratios and mean-variance utility scores, especially when employing Markov switching models and exploiting predictability at intermediate horizons. Furthermore, our results are robust to the inclusion of transaction costs.

Abstract

The knowledge of the picosecond dynamics of the energy level alignment between donor and acceptor materials in organic photovoltaic devices under working conditions is a challenge for fundamental material research. We measured by means of time-resolved Resonant X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (RPES) the energy level alignment in ZnPc/C 60 films. We employed 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses to pump the system simulating sunlight excitation and X-rays from the synchrotron as a probe. We measured changes in the valence bands due to pump induced modifications of the interface dipole. Our measurements prove the feasibility of time-resolved RPES with high repetition rate sources.

Abstract

Progress in understanding and exploiting the properties of complex oxide heterostructures requires advances in stateof- the-art growth and characterization techniques for these materials. Currently, atomic control of their synthesis is demonstrably inferior to that of their semiconductor counterparts, [ 1 ] despite recent progress for example in creating a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas in semiconducting ZnO [ 2 , 3 ] and in exploring novel interface effects in perovskites. [ 4 ] This superiority in growth control can be attributed in part to the development of quantitative, in situ refl ection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) possible in the UHV environment typical of semiconductor fi lm growth. [ 5 ] Oxides with the perovskite structure (chemical formula ABO 3 ) have attracted enormous interest as they display a wide range of exotic properties driven by strong spin-charge-lattice coupling, [ 6 ] such as quantum critical behavior in superconducting cuprates, colossal magnetoresistance in phase-separated manganites, and magnetoelectric coupling in BiFeO 3 . This coupling underlies the strong response of the electronic structure to small distortions of the BO 6 octahedra away from simple cubic coordination, distortions driven either by a Jahn-Teller (J-T) mechanism (removing energy level degeneracy by symmetry reduction) or by octahedral rotations to accommodate imperfect packing within the cubic unit cell that depends on cationic radii. These distortions are signifi cantly infl uenced in a stochastic way by disorder, unavoidably introduced by random A-site doping [ 7 ] or off-stoichiometry (ratio A:B ? 1, or oxygen vacancies) often seen in epitaxial films. In the search for novel electronic properties at interfaces, additional defect mechanisms such as cation intermixing and segregation must be addressed and their precise distribution near the interface known. Ultimately, identifying new electronic properties will depend critically on eliminating these forms of disorder and defects, or precisely controlling them if desired, through atomic design. Here we report evidence of signifi cant improvements in the atomic design of perovskite interfaces made possible by advances in in situ RHEED control of surfaces that exploit the detection of the characteristic octahedral distortions in the surface layer as it is being deposited. This method allows optimization of the phase diagram versus doping of films, and eliminates intermixing and anomalous lattice dilations at interfaces that have previously been observed. Careful structural analysis shows an unusual evolution of octahedral distortions including both J-T type and rotations near the interface not seen in bulk. These new results should be included in electronic structure calculations modeling the properties of real heterointerfaces.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess if a polymorphism (PM) of the microsatellite (CA13–27) in the promoter region of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) was associated with the exudative form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to its risk factors. Methods: In 107 patients with AMD (AMD Group) and 223 age- and gender-matched controls (Control Group) with cataract, demographic, clinical data, and MMP-9 PM have been compared. Results: The comparison of allelic frequencies showed a different pattern of CA repeats between AMD and Control Group (P < 0.00005), in particular the prevalence of longer microsatellites (≥ 22 CA repeats) was higher in AMD than in Control Group (O.R. 2.49, 95% CI 1.71 - 3.37, P < 0.001). Analyses of genetic frequencies gave similar results. Logistic regression confirmed that 22 or more CA repeats are associated to AMD. The only association between MMP-9 PM and other risk factors for AMD was with BMI (Spearman’s R = 0.298, P < 0.00005): all patients with both microsatellites ≥ 22 CA repeats were overweight or obese (χ2 test P < 0.0005, compared to other genotypes). Conclusions: Longer microsatellites in the promoter of MMP-9 are associated to the exudative form of AMD and to body mass index, a well-known risk factor for the disease.

Abstract

This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. Abstract

Purpose: To assess the corneal epithelial function after prolonged topical administration of diclofenac 0.1% and flurbiprofen 0.03% single-dose eyedrops. Setting: University Eye Clinic of Trieste, Trieste, Italy. Methods: This randomized prospective study comprised 24 patients scheduled for phacoemulsification. The patients were randomly assigned to receive diclofenac or flurbiprofen eyedrops for 2 months after surgery. Corneal epithelial permeability was determined by fluorophotometry 7, 37, and 67 days after surgery. Results: An increase in corneal epithelial permeability was observed in the diclofenac group 37 and 67 days after surgery. No epithelial function alterations occurred in the flurbiprofen group. Conclusions: Subclinical impairment of the epithelial function was observed during topical treatment with diclofenac 0.1% single-dose eyedrops after phacoemulsification. The mechanism responsible for this effect remains unknown.

Abstract

We present experimental x-ray-absorption spectra at the oxygen and 3d transition-metal K edges of LaFeO3 and LaCoO3. We interpret the experimental results in terms of detailed theoretical calculations based on multiple-scattering theory. Along with providing an understanding of the origin of various experimental features, we investigate the effects of structural distortions and the core-hole potential in determining the experimental spectral shape. The results indicate that the core-hole potential as well as many-body effects within the valence electrons do not have any strong effect on the spectra suggesting that the spectral features can be directly interpreted in terms of the electronic structure of such compounds.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) for anterior segment neovascularization secondary to ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty-seven eyes were randomized to receive standard PRP (19 eyes), selective PRP (20 eyes), or PDT (17 eyes). Selective PRP was performed only when iris neovascularization and/or angle neovascularization showed progression on weekly follow-up. Primary outcome measures were the extension of anterior segment neovascularization and the rate of neovascular glaucoma development. Secondary outcome measures included visual acuity results. RESULTS After 12 months of follow-up, iris neovascularization extension was 0.52, 2.55, and 2.27 in the PRP, selective PRP, and PDT groups, respectively. Anterior segment neovascularization extension was 0.57, 1.50, and 1.27 in the PRP, selective PRP, and PDT groups, respectively. Both showed a statistically significant difference in the PRP group. The rate of neovascular glaucoma development was similar in the three groups. CONCLUSIONS Although PRP was better at determining iris neovascularization and anterior segment neovascularization regression, the similar rate of neovascular glaucoma development found in the three groups indicates that anterior segment neovascularization secondary to ischemic CRVO can also be safely managed using selective PRP or PDT.
