A complete and updated list of 1,066 species and subspecies of the superfamily Curculionoidea recorded from Poland until the end of 2017 is provided, including over 290 comments on all taxonomic, nomenclatural and faunistic changes made since the first edition of the checklist published in 2005. An additional 37 species in the list are considered as erroneously recorded and excluded from the fauna of Poland. An update of the index of genera and subgenera, together with their type species, is provided separately. The following two new synonyms are recognised: Bruchela rufipes nigritarsis (Reitter, 1916) = B. rufipes rufipes (Olivier, 1790) (Anthribidae: Urodontinae), Otiorhynchus proximus iteratus Magnano, 2001 = O. proximus proximus Stierlin, 1861 (Curculionidae: Entiminae). Six species are resurrected from synonymy with the species given in parentheses: Squamapion serpyllicola (Wencker) (S. minutissimum (Rosenhauer)), Polydrusus thalassinus Gyllenhal (P. formosus (Mayer)), Phyllobius vespertinus (Fabricius) (Ph. pyri (L.)), Microplontus melanostigma (Marsham) (M. rugulosus (Herbst)), Otiorhynchus smreczynskii Cmoluch (O. rotundus Marseul), Romualdius angustisetulus (Hansen) (R. scaber (Linnaeus)). Phyllobius fessus Boheman is replaced in the list with Ph. jacobsoni Smirnov due to the former misidentification of Polish specimens. Brachysomus strawinskii Cmoluch is transferred from subgenus Hippomias to Brachysomus s. str. Eleven new weevil species have been discovered in Poland since 2005, including the still unpublished records of Pachycerus madidus (Olivier). The occurrence in Poland of four species, having hitherto only uncertain old records, has been confirmed with recent findings. The number of dubious species in Poland increased to 27 after the inflow of uncertain data in the literature and probable cases of extinction.

The updated checklist of the superfamily Curculionoidea of the Kaliningrad Region (Russia) is presented. At the moment, 526 species belonging to seven families (Nemonychidae, Anthribidae, Attelabidae, Brentidae, Dryophthoridae, Brachyceridae, and Curculionidae) are known within the present borders of the region. About 30% of them (159 species) are known only from historical records and their occurrence should be confirmed by new material. The 15 species recorded in the Kaliningrad Region for the first time include: Ceutorhynchus hampei; C. inaffectatus; Cleopomiarus graminis; Crypturgus subcribrosus; Eutrichapion punctigerum; Phyllobius roboretanus; Pityogenes trepanatus; Polydrusus pilosus; P. fulvicornis; Rhinusa collina; Sibinia viscariae; Sitona cylindricollis; S. lateralis; S. waterhousei; Trypodendron signatum. Three species (Hypera denominanda; Neocoenorhinidius pauxillus; Orthotomicus longicollis) were removed from the regional checklist. The checklist is supplemented with 152 species that...

WOS: 000342838400009 The ultrastructure of the internal sac was comparatively studied in five species of the genus Phyllobius Germar, 1824, two species of the genus Oedecnemidius Daniel, 1903 and one species of the genus Parascythropus Desbrochers, 1875, all belonging to the weevil tribe Phyllobiini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae). Similarities and differences between the species investigated are discussed. The total shape of internal sac is similar, but the teeth that are located in the ventral part are different in all the species. The details of the internal sac under the scanning electron microscope are important for taxonomy and could be used for separating similar species. Based upon external features of adults of the genus Zeanillus ten species are recognized, seven of which are new to science. Because of significant morphological differences, all species are arranged in four subgenera: the nominotypical subgenus Zeanillus, including Z. phyllobius (Broun), Z. punctigerus (Broun), and Z. nunni, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Trotters George); the monobasic subgenus Brounanillus, new subgenus, including Z. pallidus (Broun); the monobasic subgenus Nunnanillus, new subgenus, including Z. pellucidus, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Oamaru); and the most species-rich subgenus Otagonillus, new subgenus, including Z. brouni, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Oamaru), Z. lescheni, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Southland, Waikaia Forest), Z. carltoni, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Mount Watkin), Z. montivagus, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, North Rough Ridge), and Z. nanus, new species (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Waipori River Valley). Based on new morphological data, a redescription of genus, redescriptions of previously described species, and descriptions of all new taxa are given and a taxonomic key for all known species is provided. Maps of species distributions and illustrations of main taxonomic characters used in the text are also included. Some biogeographic/evolutionary aspects of Zeanillus origin and diversification are discussed.

In 2003–2004, 102 species of five weevil families were found in the steppe and desert associations of the Caspian semi-desert (Dzhanybek Station). Representatives of Curculionidae predominated (87 species). The majority of the commonest weevil species (20) were most abundant in the steppe associations, only 6 species being found in the desert ones. The composition of the weevil community changed abruptly from spring to summer. The greatest species richness (86 species) was observed in spring; only in this period weevils living mostly on the soil surface had high densities. In the herbage, both in the steppe and desert communities, detritophagous steppe species Archaeophloeus inermis and Trachyphloeus amplithorax were abundant; the habitats of the solonetz complex (on microelevations and in the depressions), the desert-steppe and steppe species (Humeromima nitida, Mesagroicus poriventris, Temnorhinus strabus) associated with saline substrates were also present. The spring hortobiont assemblage was dominated by the polyphagous steppe weevils, Euidosomus acuminatus, Phyllobius brevis and Omias spp. In summer, 53 species of weevils were recorded; their numbers on the soil surface sharply dropped, the core of the herbage assemblage consisted of the weevils feeding on alfalfa (Stenopterapion tenue, Sitona spp., Tychius spp.) in the steppe associations, with the maximum abundance in the more humid depressions. The summer assemblage of the desert herbage was poor and consisted of the species associated with wormwoods and chenopods (Ptochus porcellus, Phacephorus argyrostomus, Metadonus anceps). The autumn groupings with only 24 species were poor and had low population densities.

In desert and steppe habitats of the complex North Caspian semi-desert, more than twofold differences in the number of hortobiont Curculionoidea species (33 and 75 species, respectively) were observed between the “dry” (1972–1974) and “humid” (2003–2005) climatic phases. The abundance of most species changed. Polyphagous steppe weevils of the subfamily Entiminae (Otiorhynchus velutinus, Euidosomus acuminatus, Omias verruca, and O. rotundatus) with spring activity of adults were the most stable, representing the main dominants of the spring communities both in the 1970s and 2000s. Nearly all of the weevils that changed their abundance since the 1970s were specialized herbivores with summer adult activity. In the more humid 2000s, the abundance of some desert-steppe weevils dominating the desert communities (Phacephorus nebulosus, Metadonus anceps and especially Ptochus porcellus) dropped drastically. Most of the species whose abundance increased most strongly (Phyllobius brevis, Trachyphloeus amplithorax, Archaeophloeus inermis, Stenopterapion tenue, Sitona inops, S. longulus, Tychius spp.) are associated with Medicago romanica, the plant that considerably raised its density in the microdepressions during the “humid” phase. The data show an evident reduction of the most xerophilic (desertsteppe) components of the weevil community and an increase in the fraction of mesophilic species. These changes seem to follow a cyclic pattern.

During the last two years the main insect pests on plum trees in the region of Plovdiv (Central-South Bulgaria) were black and yellow plum sawflies (Hoplocampa minuta and H. flava) that destroyed 68-84% of fruitlets after bloom. Red plum maggot (Grapholitha funebrana) damaged more than 24-32% of fruits. Other important pests were two aphids (Hyalopterus pruni and Brachycaudus helichrysi), infesting 86-95,3% of shoots and brown scale (Parthenolecanium corni). Leaf sawfly (Neurotoma nemoralis), fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea), and plum ermine moth (Yponomeuta padellus) caused significant damage on leaves too. Some secondary pests, such as weevils, Rhynchites sp. and Phyllobius sp. as well as pear lace-bug (Stephanitis pyri) and others, damaged buds, fruits and leaves. Plant protection systems recommended for control of plum pests commonly include 10-12 chemical treatments. The experiments carried out in the orchards of the Agricultural University - Plovdiv have shown that the number of treatments may be significantly reduced without any negative effect on the trees or on the crop quantity and quality. This can be done by optimisation of the date of treatments, selection of proper insecticides and use of pheromones for mating disruption.

entiated inputs of nitrogen after the repeated application of ammonium nitrate into soil was monitored at Phyllobius arborator (Herbst) under field (polythene greenhouse) and laboratory (Climacell) conditions. In birch leaves, the content of nitrogen increased. The diameter and height increment was stimulated by the application of 0.5-1 g, higher doses induced stress and the fall of increment. According to the frequency of feeding marks on leaves and food consumption by weevils of the genus Phyllobius in a polythene greenhouse, birch with the higher content of nitrogen was preferred. In laboratory rearing, females showed higher food requirements. In short-term rearing, differentiation did not occur in the amount of consumed food in males and females depending on the nitrogen content.

Tropospheric ozone levels are continuously rising due to human activities in the 21st century. Although the phytotoxic impact of ozone on plants has been well documented, the effect of ozone on plant emissions has received little attention. We have conducted a field-based investigation utilizing two clones of hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. ×P. tremuloides Michx.) in a free-air ozone concentration enrichment (FACE) facility. The effects of chronic exposure to moderately increased concentrations of ozone on insect-induced terpene emissions by these trees were investigated. We used two herbivore species, Phyllobius piri, and Epirrita autumnata, both of which can reach outbreak levels on deciduous trees in Northern Europe. Our results indicated only very small changes in emissions due to increased ozone levels, but showed induction of some terpenes, particularly the monoterpene trans-β-ocimene and the homoterpene (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, in response to insect feeding. Here, we consider the positive aspects of conducting this type of study in the field and consider the possible influences of other field-based environmental factors.

Impact of insects on the regeneration potential of oaks in France. I. Action of phyllophagus Curculionidae (Coleoptera) on female flowers prior to fecundation: Insect damage to female flowers of Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Q. robur L. was surveyed in situ from 1989 to 1993 on isolated oaks as well as on forest trees in the central part of France. Depending on the year, 200 to 1000 flowers located 2–12 m high were selected and continuous observations of damage development were made from bud-burst to fecundation. Thirteen weevil species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), previously known only as defoliators, were noticed to attack buds, flowers or peduncles prior to flower fecundation. The most significant damage was caused by Polydrusus cervinus L., Strophosoma capitatum De Geer, Brachyderes incanus L., Phyllobius piri (L.) and Coeliodes ilicis (Bed.). Details of the biology of these species and the damage caused are given.

A checklist of Curculionoidea is given from southern Turkey (Adana, Osmaniye and Hatay provinces). The known localities and ecological notes on each of them were reported based on literature records and on recently collected material. Lixus farinifer Reitter is newly recorded from Turkey, and 35 species (2 Rhynchitidae, 5 Apionidae and 28 Curculionidae) was indicated for the first time from the investigated area of southern Turkey; although, the synonymy Oedecnemidius varius (= Phyllerastes pictus Steven, nomen nudum; = Phyllobius pictus syn. em.) is rectified. It was also pointed out that the name Periteloneus schilsky Reitter 1913 is a nomen nudum.Key words: Curculionoidea, synonymy, southern Turkey, faunistic, Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay, provinces.

Ant effects on the community of weevils were studied in a Quercus dentata chaparral of Ishikari Coast, northern Japan, where a supercolony of the red wood ant Formica yessensis expands over the dune. A total of 16 species of weevils were collected in the present survey. The dominant species were Myllocerus griseus, Phyllobius longicornis, Rhynchaenus japonicus and Scythropus japonicus, constituting 94% of 2485 individuals collected. The total number was more remarkably reduced in ant-abundant areas than in ant-rare areas. In particular, 3 of the 4 dominant species were considerably depopulated by ants. Adults of S. japonicus and P. longicornis were aggressively expelled or hunted on the trees. In R. japonicus, the adults were rarely attacked, however, leaf-mining immatures were remarkably predated by ants. In contrast with those 3 species, the population of M. griseus was enhanced by the presence of the ants which were almost indifferent to this species but frequently eliminated its competitors.

Transgenic silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) lines were produced in order to modify lignin biosynthesis. These lines carry COMT (caffeate/5-hydroxyferulate O-methyltransferase) gene from Populus tremuloides driven by constitutive promoter 35S CaMV (cauliflower mosaic virus) or UbB1 (ubiquitin promoter from sunflower). The decreased syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio was found in stem and leaf lignin of 35S CaMV-PtCOMT transgenic silver birch lines when compared to non-transformed control or UbB1-PtCOMT lines. In controlled feeding experiments the leaves of transgenic birch lines as well as controls were fed to insect herbivores common in boreal environment, i.e., larvae of Aethalura punctulata, Cleora cinctaria and Trichopteryx carpinata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) as well as the adults of birch leaf-feeding beetles Agelastica alni (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Phyllobius spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The feeding preferences of these herbivores differed in some cases among the tested birch lines, but these differences could not be directly associated to lignin modification. They could as well be explained by other characteristics of leaves, either natural or caused by transgene site effects. Growth performance of lepidopteran larvae fed on transgenic or control leaves did not differ significantly.
