Purpose In this investigation, a linear encoder system based on the ultrasonic transducer has been proposed. Ultrasonic transducers are usually designed for distance measurements, such as the time of flight method and sonar system. These applications are defined as discrete-length measurement technologies. The purpose of this study is to develop a continuous displacement measurement system using ultrasonic transducers. Design/methodology/approach A modified signal processing based on heterodyne signaling is implemented in this system. In the proposed signal processing, there is an automatic gain control module, a phase-shifting module, a phase detection module, an interpolation module and especially a frequency multiplication module, which can enhance the resolution and reduce the interpolation error simultaneously. Findings The proposed system can generate the encoding signals and is compatible with most motion control systems. For the experimental result, the maximum measurement error and standard deviation are about −0.027 and 0.048 mm, respectively. It shows that the proposed encoder system has the potential for displacement measurement tasks. Originality/value This study reveals an ultrasonic linear encoder that is capable of generating an incremental encoding signal, accompanied by a corresponding signal processing methodology. In contrast to the conventional heterodyne signal processing approach, the proposed multiplication method effectively reduces the interpolation error that arises because of multiple reflections.

Long-term care facilities in the United States have accounted for 40% of deaths related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Restriction of in-person visitation has heightened mental health challenges among nursing home residents, and limited evidence exists in the literature concerning nursing home residents' experiences since the COVID-19 outbreak first began. The current study used a qualitative design to obtain data from residents within two nursing homes in New York. Interview data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four major themes emerged: Emotional Reactions to Lockdown , Mixed Feelings and Attitudes Toward Nursing Home Staff and Family, Need for Support and Connection, and Desire to Be Informed and Involved . Results show that nursing home residents are emotionally burdened and suggest a critical need to provide ongoing support to prevent mental health concerns. The excited-state properties and photophysics of cytosine aza-analogues, i.e., 2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine (2,4-DT) and 2-amino-1,3,5-triazine (2-AT) in solution have been systematically explored using the QM(MS-CASPT2//CASSCF)/MM approach.

Several lines of research document various relational and personal benefits of gratitude and its key behavioral manifestation, expressed gratitude. Integrating these lines, we propose the three-factorial interpersonal emotions (TIE) analytical framework, using two directions of gratitude behavior-expression and receipt of the expression-perspectives of both individuals reporting those behaviors-the acting self and the observing partner-and two temporal scopes to examine gratitude-the dispositional and the situational (operationalized as one's 2-week average thanking behavior and daily variations around the average, respectively). These describe eight (2 × 2 × 2) prototypical aspects of behavioral manifestations of interpersonal emotions such as expressed gratitude. We demonstrate the TIE model using a well-powered dyadic daily-diary dataset of naturally emerging gratitude interactions within romantic couples. Results show all aspects of situational gratitude behavior uniquely forecast daily increases in relationship satisfaction; these effects mediate contemporaneous daily increases in life satisfaction, and are not attributable to self-disclosure, fairness, politeness, or general positivity. Alternatively, although they each show a zero-order effect, many aspects of dispositional gratitude behavior do not exert independent effects on relationship or life satisfaction, nor do they hold against the four nongratitude constructs. Exemplifying the utility of the TIE model, we conclude behavioral gratitude is an everyday phenomenon; it comprises related yet distinguishable interpersonal acts, and can be understood from the different perspectives of the actors involved. Methodologically, our work shows the value of bringing relationship-science techniques to study the social functions of emotions, and generates new questions about gratitude in everyday life. The nano-punching characteristics of single-crystalline aluminum are investigated using the quasi-continuum (QC) method. Four variables (i.e., crystal orientation, workpiece thickness, clearance between the punch and the substrate, and the taper angle of punch) are used to explore their effect during the nano-punching process. The shear stress distribution is used to express the punching effect on the punch and on both sides of the substrates. Besides, fracture strength, residual flash, and the atomic displacement vector are observed and discussed regarding the behaviors of the nano-punching process under various conditions. Based on the results, the Al workpiece with the X[111]Y[−110] orientation presents less lattice resistance during the punching process. Besides, the thickness of the workpiece has a significant effect on the punching quality. Workpieces with thickness values of 5 and 10 Å are more suitable for punching, due to stable loading and unloading stress–displacement curves and less residual flash on the cutting surfaces of these workpieces. In contrast, the effect of clearance has less impact on the punching behaviors of thinner workpieces. However, for thicker workpieces (i.e., 15 and 20 Å), a larger clearance will likely cause more residual flash. Furthermore, the taper angle of the punch should not be larger than 10°, otherwise, it might damage the workpiece and the substrate.

RNA therapeutics is an emerging field that widens the range of treatable targets and would improve disease outcome through bypassing the antibiotic bactericidal targets to kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb).We screened for microRNA with immune-regulatory functions against M.tb by next generation sequencing of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, followed by validation in an independent cohort.Twenty three differentially expressed microRNAs were identified between 12 active pulmonary TB patients and 4 healthy subjects, and 35 microRNAs before and after 6-month anti-TB therapy. Enriched predicted target pathways included proteoglycan, HIF-1 signaling, longevity-regulating, central carbon metabolism, and autophagy. We validated miR-431-3p down-regulation and miR-1303 up-regulation accompanied with corresponding changes in their predicted target genes in an independent validation cohort of 46 active TB patients, 30 latent TB infection subjects, and 24 non-infected healthy subjects. In vitro experiments of transfections with miR-431-3p mimic/miR-1303 short interfering RNA in THP-1 cells under ESAT-6 stimuli showed that miR-431-3p and miR-1303 were capable to augment and suppress autophagy/apoptosis/phagocytosis of macrophage via targeting MDR1/MMP16/RIPOR2 and ATG5, respectively.This study provides a proof of concept for microRNA-based host-directed immunotherapy for active TB disease. The combined miR-431-3p over-expression and miR-1303 knock-down revealed new vulnerabilities of treatment-refractory TB disease.

This article presents simple and efficient 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU)-promoted Heck-type alkene perfluoroalkylation under visible light irradiation. With DBU as both a halogen bond acceptor and a base, these transformations can smoothly proceed via a radical process in the absence of an additional photocatalyst. The developed protocol employs alkenes and perfluoroalkyl iodides as readily available substrates and ethyl acetate as a green solvent, affording various perfluoroalkylated alkenes in satisfactory yields under mild conditions.

Objectives To determine sociodemographics and caregiver burdens associated with overnight hospitalization, hospice utilization, and hospitalization frequency among persons with dementia (PWD). Methods Cross-sectional analysis of PWD (n = 899) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study linked to the National Study of Caregiving. Logistic and proportional odds regression determined the effects of caregiver burdens on overnight hospitalization, hospice use, and hospitalization frequency. Differences between PWD alive not-alive groups were compared on overnight hospitalization and frequency. Results Alive PWD (n = 804) were 2.36 times more likely to have an overnight hospital stay (p = 0.004) and 1.96 times more likely to have multiple hospitalizations when caregivers found it physically difficult to provide care (p = 0.011). Decedents aged 65–74 (n = 95) were 4.55 times more likely to experience overnight hospitalizations than 85+, hospitalizations were more frequent (odds ratio [OR] = 4.84), and there was a significant difference between PWD alive/not alive groups (p = 0.035). Decedents were 5.60 times more likely to experience an overnight hospitalization when their caregivers had financial difficulty, hospitalizations were more frequent when caregivers had too much to handle (OR = 8.44) and/or no time for themselves (OR = 10.67). When caregivers had no time for themselves, a significant difference between alive/not alive groups (p = 0.018) was detected in hospitalization frequency. PWD whose caregivers had emotional difficulty helping were 5.89 times more likely to utilize hospice than caregivers who did not report emotional difficulty. Significance of results Care transitions among PWD at the end of life are impacted by the circumstances and experiences of their caregivers. Subjective caregiver burdens represent potentially modifiable risks for undesired care transitions and opportunities for promoting hospice use. Future work is warranted to identify and address these issues as they occur.

This paper presents the optimum auxiliary fan(s) location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where diesel-powered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut with varying the intake air quantities using a 30 m3/s capacity twin 75 kW auxiliary fan and 45 m3/s capacity twin 110 kW auxiliary fan to control air recirculation and DPM. The results showed that if the drive intake airflow rate matches the fan capacity, air recirculation will occur even when the fan is located 10 m away from the crosscut entry. Results also showed that if the intake drive air quantity was greater than or equal to 150% of fan capacity, no recirculation was observed when the twin 75 kW fan location was at least 5 m and the twin 110 kW fan location was at least 10 m away from the dead-end crosscut access.

Very few studies have shown the real origin and timing of de novo variants (DNV) implicated in von Willebrand disease (VWD). We investigated four families with type 2 VWD. First, we conducted linkage analysis using single nucleotide variant genotyping to recognize the possible provenance of DNV. Second, we performed amplification refractory mutation system-quantitative polymerase chain reaction to confirm the real origin of variant (~0% mutant cells) or presence of a genetic mosaic variant (0%-50% mutant cells) in three embryonic germ layer-derived tissues and sperm cells. Then, three possible timings of DNV were categorized based on the relative likelihood of occurrence according to the number of cell divisions during embryogenesis. Two each with type 2B VWD (proband 1 p.Arg1308Cys, proband 4 p.Arg1306Trp) and type 2A VWD (proband 2 p.Leu1276Arg, proband 3 p.Ser1506Leu) were identified. Variant origins were identified for families 1, 2 and 3 and confirmed to originate from the mother, father and father, respectively. However, the father of family 4 was confirmed to have isolated germline mosaicism with 2.2% mutant sperm cells. Further investigation confirmed the paternal grandfather to be the origin of variant. Thus, we proposed that DNV originating from the two fathers most likely occurred at the single sperm cell, the one originating from the mother occurred at the zygote during the first few cellular divisions; alternatively, in family 4, the DNV most likely occurred at the early postzygotic development in the father. Our findings are essential for understanding genetic pathogenesis and providing accurate genetic counselling.

As end devices have become ubiquitous in daily life, the use of natural human-machine interfaces has become an important topic. Many researchers have proposed the frameworks to improve the performance of dynamic hand gesture recognition. Some CNN models are widely used to increase the accuracy of dynamic hand gesture recognition. However, most CNN models are not suitable for end devices. This is because image frames are captured continuously and result in lower hand gesture recognition accuracy. In addition, the trained models need to be efficiently deployed on end devices. To solve the problems, the study proposes a dynamic hand gesture recognition framework on end devices. The authors provide a method (i.e., ModelOps) to deploy the trained model on end devices, by building an edge computing architecture using Kubernetes. The research provides developers with a real-time gesture recognition component. The experimental results show that the framework is suitable on end devices.

The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) is unclear. House dust mite (HDM) is associated with immune inflammation in the body. This study is designed to identify the association between HDM and UC clinical symptoms. UC patients (n = 86) and non-UC control (NC) subjects (n = 64) were recruited. Colon lavage fluids (CLF) were collected from HDM skin prick test positive patients during colonoscopy, and analyzed by immunological approaches. HDM was detected in fecal samples, which was positively correlated with UC clinical symptoms. HDM-specific eosinophils and Th2 cells were detected in CLF, which could be specifically activated by exposing to HDM in the culture. Direct exposure to HDM induced eosinophil activation in the colon of UC patients. UC patients displayed elevated levels of Th2 cytokines in the serum. UC clinical symptom scores were positively correlated with serum levels of Th2 cytokines. HDM was detected in UC patients’ stools, which was positively correlated with UC clinical symptoms. Direct exposure to HDM could trigger eosinophilic activation of the colon.

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT)-induced oral mucositis (OM) causes oral pain, malnutrition, and impaired quality of life in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Phytochemicals play a potential role in eliminating cancer therapy toxicity.To evaluate the effect of phytochemical-rich vegetable and fruit juice (VFJ) consumption in preventing CCRT-induced OM among patients with locally advanced HNC.Forty-nine patients with HNC undergoing CCRT were enrolled. All patients received nutritional counseling before CCRT and weekly follow-up. The VFJ group (25 patients) received 600 mL/day VFJ, 5 days/week for two weeks preceding CCRT and during CCRT, and the control group (24 patients) did not. The contents of total polyphenols and carotenoids in the VFJ were determined. Changes in anthropometric, dietary, and laboratory profiles were compared. Assessment of OM was based on the World Health Organization (WHO) scoring system.Total polyphenols content was 64.6 mg gallic acid equivalents per 100 mL of the VFJ, and the main carotenoids were β-carotene and lycopene. The mean daily consumption of the VFJ was 538 mL for VFJ group. Changes in body weight, albumin, and energy intake were not significantly different between the two groups. The incidence of ulcerative OM was significantly lower in VFJ (64.0%) than in control (95.8%) subjects at week 6 of CCRT. Background The aim of this study was to explore whether nursing staff retained knowledge, self-confidence, and attitudes 6 months after participating in a critical appraisal skills workshop. Method A retrospective matched case-control study was conducted to ascertain the effects of this training on the ability to appraise literature. Results Mean scores on the critical appraisal knowledge test, self-confidence, and attitudes were significantly higher in the case group compared to the control group ( p < .001, p < .05, and p = .031, respectively). Conclusion Six months after the workshop, critical appraisal knowledge, self-confidence, and attitudes remained improved among the nursing staff who participated. The impact of increased model horizontal resolution on climate prediction performance is examined by comparing results from low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) decadal prediction simulations conducted with the Community Earth System Model (CESM). There is general improvement in global skill and signal-to-noise characteristics, with particularly noteworthy improvements in the eastern tropical Pacific, when resolution is increased from order 1° in all components to order 0.1°/0.25° in the ocean/atmosphere. A key advance in the ocean eddy-resolving HR system is the reduction of unrealistic warming in the Southern Ocean (SO) which we hypothesize has global ramifications through its impacts on tropical Pacific multidecadal variability. The results suggest that accurate representation of SO processes is critical for improving decadal climate predictions globally and for addressing longstanding issues with coupled climate model simulations of recent Earth system change.

IntroductionSexual stigma causes psychological distress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. LGB individuals are more likely to exhibit both problematic Internet use (PIU) and significant depression than are heterosexual individuals. Whether the severities of sexual stigma varied among LGB individuals with various statuses of comorbid PIU and depression warrants study. The present study aimed to investigate the differences in the experiences of familial sexual stigma (FSS), internalized sexual stigma (ISS), and sexual orientation microaggressions (SOMs) among LGB individuals with various statuses of comorbid PIU and depression.MethodsIn total, 1,000 self-identified LGB young adult individuals participated in the study. The level of PIU was assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale, depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, the experience of FSS was assessed using the Homosexuality-Related Stigma Scale, the experience of ISS was assessed using the Measure of Internalized Sexual Stigma for Lesbians and Gay Men, and the experience of sexual orientation microaggression was assessed using the Sexual Orientation Microaggression Inventory. The differences in the levels of FSS, ISS, and SOMs among the four groups [i.e., the groups with both PIU and depression (comorbid group), only depression, only PIU, and neither PIU nor depression (neither group)] were investigated using multivariate analysis of covariance.ResultsThe results indicated that LGB individuals with comorbid PIU and depression reported higher levels of ISS and SOMs than did those with depression only and PIU only, respectively. Moreover, LGB individuals with PIU or significant depression had higher levels of FSS and SOMs than did those with neither PIU nor depression.DiscussionThe results of this study supported that the experiences of FSS, ISS, and SOMs were significantly associated with various levels of PIU and depression in LGB individuals.

Background Left-behind children in China, who live without one or both parents due to migration, are highly susceptible to various physical and mental health issues, including injuries. The promotion of their well-being and the reduction of harm incidences depend on crucial factors such as social support, self-esteem, and resilience. However, the underlying mechanisms for achieving these goals remain unclear. Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the chain-mediating effects of self-esteem and psychological resilience between perceived social support and the number of injuries experienced in the last year among left-behind children in order to establish a foundation for the development of effective injury prevention strategies. Methods The survey data for this study was collected from 1005 left-behind children in the Chaoshan region, China, between September 2019 and September 2020. The survey included the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire Revised 2 (JVQ R2), as well as the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Psychological Resilience Scale. Chain-Mediating effect was worked out by using AMOS structural equation model (SEM), and the significance of mediation was examined by bootstrap. Results (1) A linear regression analysis showed that perceived social support was positively correlated with self-esteem (r=0.25, PConclusions The findings of this study suggest that social support can reduce the risk of injury of left-behind children in the Chaoshan region, and indirectly reduce the risk of injury of left-behind children through the chain-mediating effect of self-esteem and psychological resilience. Thus, enhancing the perceived social support, self-esteem, and psychological resilience of left-behind children may promote their physical and mental well-being and lower their vulnerability to injuries.

Background Dengue virus (DENV) is the leading cause of arboviral diseases in humans worldwide. Currently Dengvaxia, the first dengue vaccine licensed in 20 countries, was recommended for DENV seropositive individuals aged 9–45 years. Studying dengue seroprevalence can improve our understanding of the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of DENV, and facilitate future intervention strategies and assessment of vaccine efficacy. Several DENV envelope protein-based serological tests including IgG and IgG-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) have been employed in seroprevalence studies. Previously DENV IgG-capture ELISA was reported to distinguish primary and secondary DENV infections during early convalescence, however, its performance over time and in seroprevalence study remains understudied. Methods In this study, we used well-documented neutralization test- or reverse-transcription-polymerase-chain reaction-confirmed serum/plasma samples including DENV-naïve, primary and secondary DENV, primary West Nile virus, primary Zika virus, and Zika with previous DENV infection panels to compare the performance of three ELISAs. Results The sensitivity of the InBios IgG ELISA was higher than that of InBios IgG-capture and SD IgG-capture ELISAs. The sensitivity of IgG-capture ELISAs was higher for secondary than primary DENV infection panel. Within the secondary DENV infection panel, the sensitivity of InBios IgG-capture ELISA decreased from 77.8% at 20 years (p Conclusions Our findings demonstrate higher sensitivity of DENV IgG ELISA than IgG-capture ELISA in seroprevalence study and interpretation of DENV IgG-capture ELISA should take sampling time and primary or secondary DENV infection into consideration.

Governmental non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and concerns regarding COVID-19 infection greatly affected population mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study analyzed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business operations of Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) and 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan. We collected data from COVID-19 Mobility Reports published by Google, the Our World in Data website, and the monthly financial reports of THSR and 7-Eleven stores. The findings revealed that the mean population mobility at transit stations decreased by over 50% during the pandemic. Changes in population mobility were significantly associated with the reproduction rate (7-day rolling average) and with the daily number of new confirmed cases per million people (7-day rolling average). The operating income of THSR was significantly associated with the decrease in population mobility at transit stations. The monthly and annual operating income of THSR in 2020, 2021, and 2022 (during the pandemic) were significantly lower than those in 2019 (before the pandemic). THSR’s monthly operating income was lowest compared with the 2019 value during the Alpha variant period (89.89% lower). No significant correlation was noted between the operating income of 7-Eleven stores and population mobility. Moreover, no significant differences were discovered between the monthly and annual operating incomes of 7-Eleven stores in 2019 and those in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Implementation of the policy of coexistence with the virus by the Taiwanese government began in May 2022, and from May 2022 to October 2022, the monthly income of 7-Eleven stores was higher than that in 2019 whereas the monthly income of THSR began lower than and then slowly increased to the level in 2019. In conclusion, the operating performance of THSR was closely related to population mobility and government NPIs, whereas the operating performance of 7-Eleven stores was less strongly affected by NPIs. These stores increased their operating income by providing e-commerce and delivery services; they thus remained popular in the community.

Hair is a noninvasive valuable biospecimen for the long-term assessment of endogenous metabolic disturbance. Whether the hair is suitable for identifying biomarkers of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) process remains unknown. We aim to investigate the metabolism changes in hair after β-amyloid (Aβ1-42) exposure in rats using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry–based untargeted and targeted methods. Thirty-five days after Aβ1-42 induction, rats displayed significant cognitive deficits, and forty metabolites were changed, of which twenty belonged to three perturbed pathways: (1) phenylalanine metabolism and phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis—l-phenylalanine, phenylpyruvate, ortho-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and phenyllactic acid are up-regulated; (2) arachidonic acid (ARA) metabolism—leukotriene B4 (LTB4), arachidonyl carnitine, and 5(S)-HPETE are upregulation, but ARA, 14,15-DiHETrE, 5(S)-HETE, and PGB2 are opposite; and (3) unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis— eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), FA 18:3 + 1O, and FA 18:3 + 2O are downregulated. Linoleic acid metabolism belonging to the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acid includes the upregulation of 8-hydroxy-9,10-epoxystearic acid, 13-oxoODE, and FA 18:2 + 4O, and downregulation of 9(S)-HPODE and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid. In addition, cortisone and dehydroepiandrosterone belonging to steroid hormone biosynthesis are upregulated. These three perturbed metabolic pathways also correlate with cognitive impairment after Aβ1-42 stimulation. Furthermore, ARA, DHA, EPA, l-phenylalanine, and cortisone have been previously implicated in the cerebrospinal fluid of AD patients and show a similar changing trend in Aβ1-42 rats’ hair. These data suggest hair can be a useful biospecimen that well reflects the expression of non-polar molecules under Aβ1-42 stimulation, and the five metabolites have the potential to serve as novel AD biomarkers.

BackgroundVitamin D deficiency is common in critically ill patients with suspected infection and is strongly associated with the predisposition of sepsis and a poor prognosis. The effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation for preventing sepsis remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study investigated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on sepsis prophylaxis in critically ill patients with suspected infection.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included 19,816 adult patients with suspected infection in intensive care units (ICU) from 2008 to 2019 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, USA. The included patients were divided into the vitamin D cohort or non-vitamin D cohort according to vitamin D administration status. The primary outcomes were the incidence of sepsis in ICU. The secondary outcomes included 28-day all-cause mortality, length of ICU and hospital stay and the requirements of vasopressors or mechanical ventilation. A propensity score matching cohort was used to test the differences in primary and secondary outcomes between groups.ResultsThe results showed that vitamin D supplementation demonstrated a lower risk of sepsis (odd ratio 0.46; 95% CI 0.35–0.60; P < 0.001) and a lower risk of new mechanical ventilation requirement (odd ratio 0.70; 95% CI 0.53-0.92; P = 0.01), but no significant difference in the risk of 28-day mortality was observed (hazard ratio 1.02; 95% CI 0.77–1.35; P = 0.89). In the sensitive analysis, among the patients who suspected infection within 24 h before or after ICU admission, a lower risk of sepsis and a lower percentage of new mechanical ventilation also were detected in the vitamin D cohort.ConclusionVitamin D supplementation may have a positively prophylactic effect on sepsis in critically ill patients with suspected infection.
