The Working Group on Spatial Fisheries Data (WGSFD) focuses on collating and analysing spa-tial fisheries data in order to evaluate fishing effort, intensity, and frequency in European waters.ICES had issued a data call for aggregated VMS and logbook data for the years 2009–2018. In preparation to the meeting, the ICES secretariat in collaboration with WGSFD had prepared a Quality-Control document that processed submitted Member State data and generated indica-tors that were carefully scrutinized by the WGSFD chairs for quality. In case concern was raised, data submitters were consulted and asked to revise and resubmit data if necessary. Prior to the meeting a subgroup of WGSFD met via WebEx to review and quality check the aggregated data products. This revealed a small number of submissions had not been prepared in a manner con-sistent with the others. Subsequently, relevant data submitters were contacted and asked to re-vise and resubmit data. This substantially improved our understanding potentially outlying data and the data quality as a whole.The group was updated on a number of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), Automatic Identifica-tion System (AIS) and Logbook related projects which are ongoing at national labs, including presentations on the use of VMS to assist with spatial planning of measures to protect Natura 2000 sites, the changes evident in VMS data as a response to voluntary discard reduction pro-gramme, and spatial data from an experimental razor clam fishery.Members of WGSFD analysed produced maps of fishing activity in NEAFC areas using the VMS and logbook information collected by NEAFC. A product was once again delivered to the ICES Working Group on Deep-water Ecology (WGDEC), which was used in the assessment of fishing impact on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems.WGSFD also addressed Terms of Reference on the potential use of AIS to deliver information on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) indicator D6C2 and explored means to collect the data required to parameterise the use of VMS as an indicator of effort in static gear fisheries, discussed the implications of moving to a finer spatial resolution in the data call, provided stra-tegic guidance to the Workshop on scoping benthic pressure layers D6C2 – methods to opera-tional data products (WKBEDPRES) on the use of AIS data.WGSFD retains its ambition to publish peer-reviewed research. One term of reference dealing with quantification and spatiotemporal variability of fishing fleets is making good progress to-wards this aim. A second paper on best practices for analysis of VMS data, which was started under the previous terms of reference, was paused whilst details surrounding protection of fish-ers’ anonymity were resolved. This issue was addressed by WGSFD at this meeting, and work is continuing to define best practice.

XIII International Symposium on Oceanography of the Bay of Biscay. ISOBAY 13, 11-13 April 2012, Santander, Spain, The aim of the INDEMARES Project is to obtain information to identify valuable areas for the Natura 2000 network in the Spanish sea. One of these potential marine protected areas is the Galicia Bank, a large seamount located at 150 miles far from the west coast of Galician coast. This deep seamount have a flat summit with slight slopes from 600 m to the bank break around 1000 m. Deeper 1500 m, slope increases sharply until it reaches the abyssal platform, at 5000 m deep. During the summers of the 2010 and 2011, 20 hauls were performed in the Galicia Bank with a GOC73 otter trawl (20 mm mesh size). A total of 94 fish species were identified and two main fish assemblages were observed. One of them seemed to be associated with the Mediterranean Outflow Waters (MOW), and it was found up to 1,025 m depth. The main species (in biomass) were Hoplostethus mediterraneus, Alepocephalus bairdii, Mora moro and Scymnodon ringens. The second assemblage was located between 1,400 and 1,800 m depth, affected by the Labrador Sea Water (LSW). The main species (in biomass) were Alepocephalus bairdii, Centroscymnus coelolepis, Rouleina attrita and Halargyreus johnsonii. The species richness of the first group was higher (62 species were identified in the first group and 47 in the second). The ecological preferences of the deep-water fishes along the ontogenic development were identified, analyzing the relationships with environmental variables, topography (i.e. slope) and associated biota (i.e. presence and abundance of coral fields)

ISOBAY 13, 11-13 April 2012, Santander, Spain, Three cruises were performed on the Galicia Bank (NW Iberian Peninsula, NE Atlantic) in 2009 (Ecomarg0709), 2010 (BanGal0810) and 2011 (BanGal0811) during July–August (project INDEMARES). Decapods and other macrobenthic crustaceans (eucarids and some peracarids) were collected with beam trawls (10 mm of mesh size at codend) and a GOC73 otter trawl (20 mm mesh size). 67 species of decapod crustaceans, 6 euphausiids, 19 peracarids and 1 ostracod were collected at depths between 744 and 1808 m. We found 2 new species, the Galatheidae Uroptychus cartesi and the Petalophthalmidae (Mysida) Petalophthalmus sp.1 (under description) and a number of new species for European or Iberian waters. The analysis of assemblages evidenced generalized species renewal with depth, with two different assemblages distributed between 744–ca.1400 m (the seamount top assemblage, STA) and between ca.1500–1800 m (the deep-slope assemblage over seamount flanks, DSA), respectively associated to Mediterranean outflow waters (MOW) and the Labrador Sea Water (LSW). Other significant factor splitting different assemblages over Galicia Bank was the co-occurrence of corals (both colonies of hard corals and/or gorgonians) in hauls. Galatheids (Uroptychus spp., Munidopsis spp.), with Chyrostilids and the Homolodromiidae Dicranodromia mahieuxii formed part of this coral-associated assemblage. Dominant species at the STA were the pandalid Plesionika martia (dominant in intermediate waters in the Mediterranean) and the crabs Bathynectes maravigna and Polybius henslowii, while dominant species at the DSA were of northern origin, the lithodid Neolithodes grimaldii and the crangonid Glyphocrangon longirostris associated to LSW. The diversity (H and J) of small crustaceans collected with beam trawls was controlled by Chl a blooms over bank 3 months before samplings, both at top (Spearman r=0.57, p=0.03) and flanks (r=0.74, p=0.02), while no significant relationships were found for larger decapods collected with GOC73, located at higher trophic levels than those from beam trawls

Standardization of catch per unit effort (cpue) series using a generalized linear model (GLM) for Northern European hake Merluccius merluccius (L., 1758) in International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) subarea VII, based on catch and effort data from the Spanish trawler and longliner fleets from 1986 to 2000, are presented. Data were collected from trawler and longliner fleets targeting hake off the Spanish ports of La Coruña, Burela, and Celeiro. Main factors in the models created include a factor for engine Horse Power, to adjust for characteristics that determine fishing power; Year and Month factors for La Coruña's trawler fleet; and the factors Month, Year, Vessel, and Fishing Days for the Spanish longliner fleet as a whole. Moreover, both models indicate that interactions between the Year and Month factors also had a significant impact on hake catch rates. The total proportions of variance explained by these models were 55% for La Coruña's trawler fleet, and about 48 % for Spanish longliner fleet. The results showed similar patterns comparing nominal and standardized catch rates., Se muestra la aplicación de un modelo lineal generalizado (GLM) para la estandarización de la captura por unidad de esfuerzo (cpue) de la merluza europea Merluccius merluccius (L., 1758) del stock norte en la subárea VII del Consejo Internacional para la Exploración del Mar (CIEM) durante el periodo 1986- 2000. Los datos de esfuerzo y captura proceden de las flotas de arrastre y de palangre de los puertos de A Coruña, Burela y Celeiro (en el noroeste de España) dirigidas a la pesca de merluza del stock norte. En el modelo para la flota arrastrera del puerto de A Coruña se incluyeron los factores año, mes y categoría del barco, que relacionan la potencia del motor con su poder de pesca, y en el modelo para la flota palangrera de los puertos de A Coruña, Burela y Celeiro se incluyeron los factores año, mes, barco y días de pesca. Ambos modelos reflejan interacciones significativas entre los factores año-mes; así, el 55 % de la variación total observada se explica con el modelo para la flota arrastrera del puerto de A Coruña, y el 48 % se explica con el modelo para la flota palangrera. The so-called baca trawl fleet of the port of A Coruña working in the VIIIc ICES Division Area has been used since 1985 as the tuning fleet for the analytical assessment of the southern stock of hake Merluccius merluccius(L., 1758). The historical series of cpue dates from 1983 to 2000 with data missing from 1998. From January 1999, landings were estimated by means of monthly samplings in port. The predictions of the arima model fit the 1983-1997 series, and estimates of the transfer function model from the 1983-2000 series made it possible to complete the series, and to detect errors and possible changes in the orientation of the fleet. The comparison of the two models confirms the series's stability over time, validating the estimates made in the last two years., La flota de baca del puerto de A Coruña que opera en el área VIIIc del CIEM se usa desde 1985 como flota de calibración en la evaluación del stock sur de merluza Merluccius merluccius (L., 1758). Se dispone de una serie histórica mensual de cpue (1983-2000), excepto para 1998, año del que no se posee información. Desde enero de 1999 los desembarcos han sido estimados a partir de muestreos mensuales en lonja. Las predicciones efectuadas por el modelo arima ajustado a la serie 1983-1997 y las estimaciones del modelo de función de transferencia, considerando la serie 1983-2000, han permitido completar la serie, así como detectar errores o cambios en el comportamiento de la flota. The Prestige oil tanker sank in November 2002 and leaked around 60 000 mt. of heavy oil (type M-100) into the sea. Immediately after the accident, closed areas were established. Among the fleets affected by the closures were four of the most important in ICES Division VIIIc and Sub-division IXa North (bottom trawl, pair trawl, purse seine targeting sardine and hand line targeting mackerel) as they exploit considerable resources, some outside biological safety limits. A fall in effort was observed in all of them, mainly in the first quarter and in sub-divisions VIIIc West and IXa North, although it failed to lead to a very large reduction in the total annual effort of each of the fleets, with the exception of hand line. Pair trawlers can make two types of fishing trip, but differences in specific composition among the three years analysed were not found in either of them. In the case of trawl, five kinds of fishing trips were identified, and changes were only found in the type that targets Norway lobster, hake, megrim and monk (HMMN), with a fall in the presence of Norway lobster.
