Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an international next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. CTA will be implemented as southern and northern hemisphere arrays of tens of small, medium and large-sized imaging Cherenkov telescopes with the goal of improving the sensitivity over the current-generation experiments by an order of magnitude. CTA will provide energy coverage from ∼20 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) medium size (9.5m) telescopes will feature a novel aplanatic two-mirror optical design capable of accommodating a wide field-of-view with significantly improved angular resolution as compared to the traditional Davies-Cotton optical design. A full-scale prototype SC medium size telescope structure has been designed and will be constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona during the fall of 2015. This report will concentrate on the novel features of the design.

Abstract

For the diagnostics of Free Electron Laser (FEL) it is necessary to obtain accurate information on the position and profile of the electron and/or the photon beam. For these tasks, one promising method is the use of the so-called Ionization Profile Monitor (IPM). An essential advantage of this method is that the FEL beam is not influenced by the IPM, so it is possible to analyze the beam parameters without beam destruction. Moreover, the monitor is able to determine the relative position and the spatial profile of the photon beam with the precision of a few μm. In this paper, the design and first implementation of an Ionization Profile Monitor as a photon diagnostic tool at the FLASH accelerator in Hamburg is presented. In addition, the first measurements taken at FLASH are analyzed and good measuring accuracy of the IPM is obtained.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present an analytical, state-space model of an indirect, voltage-controlled cascaded-type multilevel static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with ldquosquare wave control.rdquo The multilevel converter model is segmented into a dynamic and static part in order to accurately represent all internal feedback connections. Each voltage component is analyzed in detail and described mathematically by an averaged expression with an equivalent capacitance. The STATCOM model is linearized and linked with a DQ frame AC system model and the controller model, and implemented in MATLAB. The controller gains are selected by analyzing the root locus of the analytical model to give optimum responses. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model are verified against non-linear digital simulation PSCAD/EMTDC in the time and frequency domain. The model is very accurate in the subsynchronous range, and it is adequate for most control design applications and practical stability issues below 100 Hz. Furthermore, the developed model can be used for multilevel cascaded converters which exchange real power.

Abstract

This paper develops a frequency-dependent analytical representation for a multilevel cascaded converter, with fundamental frequency switching. The gain and phase angle are studied with the firing angle as a parameter, where the converter is subjected to oscillatory excitation at a range of frequencies. This paper presents analytical formulae for a single cell and for a generic cascade multilevel converter where the number of cells is a parameter. Also, the formula for fundamental frequency studies is separately developed. The equivalent capacitance concept is introduced and its convergence to a constant value for high frequencies is demonstrated. The analytical formulae are tested against detailed digital simulation and good matching is reported. The formulae developed in this study will be of particular importance in studying interactions between a multilevel STATCOM and the host ac grid (similar to harmonic resonance) and in studying converter transient responses.

Abstract

In this paper, an analytical framework for minimizing losses and harmonics is presented for the cascaded-type-based multilevel static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with ldquosquare-wave control.rdquo The focus lays on low losses, low-voltage total harmonic distortion (THD), and low dc voltage ripple. All of the system parameters are studied, including buffer reactance, dc capacitance, transformer ratio, and transformer leakage inductance. The equivalent capacitance concept is used to represent the complex structure of the multilevel converter. It enables studies of the internal STATCOM resonances which have a significant influence on triplen harmonics and losses. The interactions between system parameter are investigated and analytical formulae for optimal parameters are derived. Detailed PSCAD digital simulations are used to confirm the analytical formulae. The summarized design steps are offered that are recommended to obtain optimum STATCOM system parameters.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation ground-based very-high energy -ray observatory. CTA will consist of two arrays: one in the Northern hemisphere composed of about 20 telescopes, and the other one in the Southern hemisphere composed of about 100 telescopes, both arrays containing telescopes of different sizes and types and in addition numerous auxiliary devices. In order to provide a test-ground for the CTA array control, the steering software of the 12-m medium size telescope (MST) prototype deployed in Berlin has been implemented using the tools and design concepts under consideration to be used for the control of the CTA array. The prototype control system is implemented based on the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Common Software (ACS) control middleware, with components implemented in Java, C++ and Python. The interfacing to the hardware is standardized via the Object Linking and Embedding for Process Control Unified Architecture (OPC UA). In order to access the OPC UA servers from the ACS framework in a common way, a library has been developed that allows to tie the OPC UA server nodes, methods and events to the equivalents in ACS components. The front-end of the archive system is able to identify the deployed components and to perform the sampling of the monitoring points of each component following time and value change triggers according to the selected configurations. The back-end of the archive system of the prototype is composed by two different databases: MySQL and MongoDB. MySQL has been selected as storage of the system configurations, while MongoDB is used to have an efficient storage of device monitoring data, CCD images, logging and alarm information. In this contribution, the details and conclusions on the implementation of the control software of the MST prototype are presented.

Abstract

In this paper, the controller robustness is studied for an indirect controlled cascaded-type based multi-level Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) with 'square wave control'. The MATLAB based small-signal analytical model is used to perform eigenvalue analysis and to design controllers. Two different advanced control techniques are investigated and compared against the conventional method of proportional- integral (PI) feedback voltage control. The first strategy includes an additional current feedback, which shows minimal benefit. The second strategy considers a phase-lead compensation and indicates significantly shorter eigenvalue branches and improved robustness. The final results are confirmed with detailed nonlinear PSCAD simulation.

Abstract

This paper presents analytical approach for modelling a multilevel STATCOM system. The small-signal dynamic STATCOM model has modular structure and consists of two separate subsystem models: an AC model and a DC model. The converter, controller and phase-locked-loop (PLL) unit are included in the DC model. In order to represent the AC system together with the DC system the AC system variables are converted by using the dq-transformation. The use of an equivalent capacitance for representing a variable DC capacitance in a multilevel converter is discussed. The model is implemented in MATLAB and the validity and accuracy of the model is verified against non-linear digital simulation PSCAD/EMTDC.

Abstract

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology.
